3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't adapt so well
Delta usually puts more quality into thier products. I had a bit of trouble trying to get the screw holes on the dust adapter to align with those of the jointer. Once attached, the fit was less that tight, which caused some shavings and dust to leak out when used with my shop-vac. When I hooked it up to my Jet 1100CF vac, these problems seemed to go away. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Save your fingers!
Over the years I've seen and heard of some horrible accidents in wood shops. Although it's not a standard piece of equipment in most shops, the shaper remains one of the most common culprits for accidents. I myself once had a piece of 3/4 x 3/4 trim fire like an arrow out of a shaper (the finger boards holding the stock had vibrated loose) narrowly missing a guy jointing lumber and bursting into toothpicks when it hit a block wall 15 feet away. I'm sure it would have gone right through him had he been standing 2 feet to the left. That and a couple of other shaper incidents have brought me to the conclusion that one of the best safety devices you can put on a shaper is a stock feeder. Nothing will ever replace common sense or care in using a shaper, but a stock feeder keeps your hands and fingers well away from the cutter head and they provide accurate feeding, positioning and control of material as it is fed against the cutter. Finger boards, hold-downs and positioning jigs are important, but ultimately it's the feeder that ensures constant feed speed and total control. I bought my feeder with my shaper (Delta 3 HP model) and would never consider running the shaper without it. I do everything in my power to avoid using the shaper "free-hand"; on cuts where the use of a feeder is impossible (such as the rails on frame and panel doors) I have jigs with integrated hold downs that achieve the control and positioning of stock while keeping my digits where they belong... as far away from that cutter head as possible.

This model from Delta is a very versatile performer, can be positioned in virtually any position or configuration you can think of, and the ability to run it in reverse is very useful in certain situations. Mine is somewhat older and it appears that there have been some design changes and a few components have been changed over to plastic. However, overall it appears to be the same device. Everything is very solidly built and absolutely rigid when locked down. However, if care is not taken during set-up a feeder can also pull pieces directly into or away from the cutter head and it will drag unsecured items such as fence plates into the cutter head too. Check everything prior to turning anything on and then check it again... it could save you more than a ruined piece of wood. The only criticism I have of Delta shapers is the fact that you have to drill the holes in the cast iron table yourself. I can understand why they don't drill holes in a table saw top by default, but a shaper? It's not too arduous to do this, but really this should be something that is done right in the factory even if you don't get a feeder with your shaper (the holes would not interfere or effect the use of the shaper in anyway). If your buying a shaper put a feeder in your budget, you will never regret the decision.

4-0 out of 5 stars A for Effort, B+ for Execution.
I bought this feeder to use with my Delta shaper and overall works great. Assembly was easy, drilling and installing the mounting base was tedious but certainly within the skills of most. Two things keep me from rating this feeder with 5 stars; the 2 adjusting hand wheels were bent when I received the package,(promptly replaced by Delta) and the locking levers that lock the various adjustments are too short, taking an extreme amount of effort to hold the feeder in place. Resolving these 2 problems (1 certainly not Delta's fault, probably the freight line, but still annoying), would make this a topnotch machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super duty stock feeder in a small package

4-0 out of 5 stars Solidly constructed
Simply put, this tool does the job. It is well constructed and built for heavy-duty use. I found out the hard way that the only reliable way to get quality cuts is to use a feeder. It's also a terrific safety device. It keeps your hands from getting anywhere near the cutter. Without it, you must stop feeding the material to reposition your hands and results in imperfections in the final product.

I gave it 4 stars only because the gear cover is plastic and the knobs/studs that hold it in place are cheaply made. These items were damaged when I received the feeder and replaced under warranty. The rest of the machine is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Replacement
A while back I bought a shaper to build passage doors & windows. When I pushed the stock thought the cutters I didn't have total control of the material being pushed thought. Then is the time I decided to buy a Power Feeder, now I have full control of my material being fed thought. The feeder has the right speed settings for my projects (slow). The way I can set the feeder to the angles of force to keep the material next to the fence, and on the table is total control for me. The only accessoire that came with the stock feeder is the grease gun, which is a big joke, thank goodness for the America made grease guns. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for smaller equipment
I've got to admit, I was a bit nervous ordering a unit this small. Advice from local shops suggested that 1/4hp was as small as you should consider... but the reviews here seemed good, so I gave it a try.

After assembling the unit, and attaching it to my Jet 1-1/2 HP Shaper, here are some comments:

- Delta 36-864 Versa-Feeder Mounting Base provided a much more rigid connection than I anticipated. I thought I would temporarily mount it with this base until I found the right spot to drill holes in my table top. I'm so pleased, I just may not drill the holes after all!

- Adjustment takes some getting used to. It certainly isn't as easy as the screws found on the larger (more expensive) units. I think I have mastered the art of 'tweaking' the unit with one hand, while tightening the clamping mechanisms with the other.

- Once properly positioned, the unit is very tight/rigid. It doesn't appear to flex too much, or fall out of position.

- Best of all, all 10 of my fingers are much safer now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fair Deal
I was reluctant to purchase this because of previous reviews. But not being rich I took the chance. I got this feeder because of a large amount of flooring I needed to do. I used this feeder to resaw 214 - 8ft clear Douglas fir 2x4s on a bandsaw, and then making T&G flooring and paneling out of the parts using a climb cut on the shaper. This feeder performed without complaint.

I have also used it on the jointer with good results.

Setup is a little bothersome because the feeder has little weight of it own and must be preloaded so that the feed wheels will stay in contact with the stock. And it would have been nice if feed speed could be reduced below the 10 f/m. At 10 f/m the feeder will stall a 3hp shaper making a single deep cut in red oak, requiring multiple passes.

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
I commend Delta for offering an affordable stock feeder but unfortunately, for me, it failed to meet even my low expectations. I mounted it on an x-31 combination machine (table saw, jointer, shaper) and intended to use it as a finger-saver, especially for ripping narrow stock. Unfortunately, in order to position it correctly and maximise the extension, I had to reverse the mounting housing from the instructions, and the extension arm was still at the maximum. This allowed a bit too much "flex". And it wouldn't even reach my jointer. Another problem was the fact that I couldn't use it on narrow stock because my fence prevented it from coming down on the stock. Worst of all was the fact that the wheels just weren't "gummy" enough and when I did manage to adjust the arm correctly, (with as much down-force as I could get) it still didn't grip the stock well enough. One positive feature was the variable feed rate.

I ended up returning it. I would pay the extra money next time for a "standard" stock feeder with three-axis adjustment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta Versa-Feeder
The Delta Versa-feeder was easy to assemble. The only problem encountered was that the overarm end was slightly mushroomed and required light filing to attach to the pivot ball. This appeared to be a shipping problem which could easily be corrected with Delta placing a protective cap on the ends. I have run 4' long 7/8" oak through the Versa-Feeder on a Delta Unisaw and it performed well. It made easy work of a tedious and some-what dangerous job. I am also going to use it on a Walker-Turner 3/4" shaper where it will usually be mounted. The drawback to the Versa-Feeder I feel would be in it's pivot ball and overarm design. It makes it harder to fine tune the Versa-Feeder to the stock and machine it is mounted on. But at better than 1/2 the price of Delta's 1/4 hp model the value is in the savings. I feel with more practice it will become easier for me to set up. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Of all the mobile bases we've seen, this is the king. The sturdy corner brackets, wheels and casters, foot pedal, and all the hardware are supplied; you supply the hardwood. We like this deal because you make the stand to fit your needs, all the way up to 30 by 30 inches and 300 pounds of load if you build your rails of oak. In a small shop or a garage shop that has to accommodate your cars, put together a couple of these and roll your tools out of the way when you're done working. With other bases we've looked at, you have to tip up your tool and waddle carefully. With this Delta, just unlock the foot pedal, engage the third-point caster, and you're off. The wheels and casters are quality, and they move like a dream. We wouldn't limit use to just tools--this base could come in handy for moving appliances, too. A nice back saver at a great price. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to assemble - a dream to use
This mobile base is easy to assemble as long as you accurately mark and drill the holes for the bolts that attach the corner pieces to the wooden frame. Assuming you have the 1.5 inch stock needed to make the side rails on hand, you can put the whole thing together in less than an hour. And when you're done, you have a mobile base that is the equal, in ease of use, to anything I have seen on the market. I especially like the foot operated third wheel, that easily engages by simply stepping on the lever mechanism, and disengages by lifting up on the lever with your foot. Nothing could be easier! And the base moves smoothly over the floor on three wheels rather than having to lift one side and push your tool on two wheels like an ungainly wheelbarrow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to compare it to, but extremely satisfied
I purchased this mobile base based on the reviews I've obtained here at Amazon for my Jet cabinet saw. Once recieved, I can say that I'm completely pleased with my purchase.

The package is quite heavy and is about the size of a shoe box. Once removed from the package, it's fairly obvious how the pieces come together, but there's a fairly good manual for reference.

The corner plates are heavy and seem very strong. The bolts, wheels, pedal and other items also have the same "strong" appeal.

I used some scrap Oak that I had which I then glued and screwed to the thickness of 1 1/2 inches. I didn't want to puchase any new material as I had this scrap avaiable, but I assume that using a single piece of hardwood is the most desireable method for assembly. The additional material cost you'll of course have to factor into your total price of the purchase.

Once assembled and place underneath my saw, the operation of raising and lowering the unit is easy and does not require much effort at all. A foot pedal is used to raise the base which then settles the wheel on an angled flat point on the pedal. The saw then glides effortlessly across my shop floor.

When in the stationary position, I do notice that my saw is not as "grounded" as it was when I did not have a base, but I'm willing to live with this as I'm sure I can figure some ways to sure this up.

Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and would not hesitate to buy another for any other large shop tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good choice
I am using this stand for a compound miter saw. For a light tool like this, pine rails ripped from 2x4s work just fine. If you are trying to support a major league table saw or something closer to the 300 pound limit, then follow Delta's advice and use hardwood.

I bought an HTC mobile stand for my table saw, in part to compare the two models. On design, the Delta wins. The freely rotating front caster makes the unit very maneuverable, much easier to move around the shop than the HTC. In addition, the lever in front gives a much greater range of motion, so it lifts the unit much further off the stationary feet. The two units are roughly equivalent in difficulty of assembly. Do your own measurements for the wood; the unit will take a tad more than the 1 1/2 inch square cross section recommended. I also recommend drilling the bolt holes with a drill press if at all possible. I don't own a drill press, so I couldn't get the holes drilled perfectly square, and the unit looks like it was assembled by a drunken sailor. It works great, but I can't really blame Delta for the appearance.

One downside to the Delta is the need for the hardwood rails for heavier equipment. If you don't have a lot of scrap hardwood lying around, you should include the price of the wood in your price comparison. You should also have access to a planer and joiner to square up the wood, something that wasn't necessary with the pine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I put this on my old Craftsman 10" table saw. Maybe it weighs 150 lbs. It was a great solution and better alternative to dragging the table saw around my shop(garage). I did not have any 1 1/2" scrap around. I went to Home Depot and bought a piece of 2x4 deck wood (pressure treated green) out of their scrap bin for 51 cents. I ripped it to 1 1/2" and cut to size. The instructions were a little fuzzy, LITERALLY, but easily understood. I also do not have a drill press but free handed the holes just fine. It took about 2 hours to assemble. I am very pleased with this item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product. Build it my way for heavy duty use!
I purchased Delta's Universal Mobil Base from Amazon for a large router table/cabinet weighing over 300 pounds I recently built. I'm very familiar with this product since I've sold many of them for $59.95 plus tax where I previously worked. You won't find a better deal then Amazon anywhere.

I gave Delta's product five stars because: No parts were missing; the fit/finish were perfect; the four heavy corner supports are impressive; two stationary rollers are at one end and a single heavy duty large foot pedal lifts the opposite end and engages the single swiveling roller which allows you to easily move your machine. A well designed product. It's built similar to Delta's welded one piece mobil base.

Delta's product is far superior to HTC's Universal Mobil Base even though you may spend a bit more to complete it if you choose my method. HTC uses two stationary rollers and two swiveling rollers attached to flimsy lifting levers which are awkward to use. I'm also not impressed with the rails used on HTC's base. It's made so you can adjust it to various sizes. If your making a large base, you must join two rails together with bolts to span the length and/or width of the base. Lots of nuts and bolts with their product.

Instead of using wood for the rails, I chose to use 1-1/2" square steel tubing with 1/4" wall thickness. This material weighs over three pounds per foot and is very strong. The cost for the steel was $25.00 and that included cutting to my specifications. I used two 44" and two 24" pieces for my base. If you need a mobil base for a heavy piece of equipment, this will suit your needs. You could use 1/8" wall if you are able to find it. I tend to over build.

I strongly recommend you read the instructions prior to doing any measuring and marking so that you totally understand how every piece fits together. The job will go much faster.

Like one of the other reviewers, I drilled my holes slightly smaller then Delta recommended. I DO NOT however recommend drilling them the exact size of the bolts (5/16") since this does not allow you any leeway. I found 3/8" perfect for my application. After marking the exact locations, use a center punch to create a starting point for your drill bit so as to prevent it from wandering on entry. Measure twice, drill once! I suggest you drill all your holes on a drill press. Clamp the steel tubing to your table to avoid any movement and guarantee the holes are aligned on both sides. Make certain to support the tubing if your drill press table is too small. Grind or file all burrs on your holes and edges before assembly.

Other than my changes, follow Delta's instructions which are well wriiten very easy to follow.

Assembly including marking, drilling, grinding and filing took approximately three hours and was worth every second. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Fit
The mobile base is a perfect fit for the saw. It is easy to use and so compact that it does not get in the way when I use the saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best accessories for your Unisaw
If you own Unisaw, or any other large heavy machine for that matter, you really should consider getting a mobile base. Delta's bases are strong, sturdy, look good and are very stable. When I upgraded to a Unisaw, I also bought the mobile base. My Unisaw actually is easier to move around than my contractors saw used to be. With a quick step on the foot lever it effortly raises onto the large swivel wheel and the Unisaw can be moved very easily. A quick flip of your foot to raise the lever and lower the saw and it rests solidly on 4 points, making it very stable. This design of mobile base make large heavy machines very easy to move around and manouver. If your workshop is smaller than you wished it was, put your machines on one of these bases and you'll find your machines take up less space and your shop will seem larger. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Carbide-tipped for longer life, Delta's 8-inch dado head stack fits snugly together to groove impressively smooth square-bottomed slots. The five inside chipper blades allow you the option of cutting dadoes up to 13/16 of an inch wide and as thin as 1/8 of an inch. The blades feature safety shoulders that help control overcutting, thus lessening the chance of kickback, a frequent hazard due to this type of cut's large surface area contact. All dado sets have some antikickback feature; Delta's performs as well as any of them. --Justin Paul ... Read more

Stackable dadoes are the way to go. I get a precision cut. When performing repetitive cuts, setup and cutting time is so much less when using a stackable dadoe vs. a router bit. I've used it to create many drawers and is excellent and convenient for rabbiting work and haven't had a problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars good dado for the money
i've had this dado set for over a year.i read all the other reviews, boy do some poeple knock it.the first few cuts i made were terrible too. but what i decided to do was buy a real shim kit & throw away that cardboard junk that came with it.shim kits are cheap.since then all the dado's are great.hard wood, soft wood, laminates, ect.also use your head & align the cutters equaly in the gullets of the outer blades,if they are not equally aligned around the blade & the 2 outer blades are not ligned up to each other, you will also have a poor cut.if i had the money to buy the freud super dado i probably would have, but after using this set why bother!!it is just fine.it has produced some beautiful stained cabinets out of oak & cherry.so save your money & get this set!! just remember to toss the cardboard shims!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Get the Freud instead
I bought this blade a little over a year ago and it's one of the biggest wastes of money that I've ever seen. Cuts through solid wood are only fair but the cuts through plywood leave a lot of tear out and the bottom is uneven and very rough. If you look closely at the picture you will see that there is a small plate attached to the inside of both the outter blades. I though these were a machined on integral part of the blade. NOT!! They are simply glued on as I discovered when one fell off. The quality of construction on this dado is way below par. Spend the extra money and get a Freud or Forrest(if you really have the extra dough). You will not regret it as I now do.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.
The 8" Delta stacked dado is dismal. I set it up to make a 1/4" box joint. Could probably have done better with a chisel. One of the outer blades is a larger diameter than the other, making a ragged bottom in the groove. Tried the same thing set at 3/8". Joint wouldn't fit right. Turns out the dado is really about .42" wide with the two outer blades and one chipper. Further setups revealed the chippers are not a uniform diameter. Don't waste your money on this. Spend it on a good one, like maybe a Freud or a Jesada. You pay for what you get. I wasted ($$$)on this. I'm going back to my old Craftsman 7" wobble-head dado. The Delta may become an anchor for my boat. Maybe it can do that right!

1-0 out of 5 stars Low quality cuts
You get what you pay for. The bottom of the groove is not flat. The width of cut is not precise requiring lots of time to set up and shim. The side walls are not clean. I would recommend saving your money and buying the more expensive Freud. It is a tough pill to swallow, but you will not be happy with this dado blade. ... Read more
