A must have for the optional 3" spindle
At first impression you are tempted to buy the optional 3" spindle for the Jet Benchtop Osciallating Spindle Sander, and skip the table insert. If you are only doing larger pieces it is possible, but the insert is an important fill to the table top.
All of the spindle inserts are easy to change, since they are only a drop in device with a single nipple so they go in the same every time. Several inserts come with the unit to keep the work support right up to the edge of the spindle sanding sleeve. The 3" shouldn't be any different and that is why this insert is a good idea as well. Replace the Plastic Knobs that Lock the Wheels
P.S. The wimpy little plastic star knobs that one turns to lock down the front wheels are difficult to grasp and twist with sufficient torque unless you have extremely small hands and very strong wrists. I replaced the knobs (5/16"-18 threads) with two simple ratchet handles that are commonly used on jigs and fixtures. You can buy them about anywhere. I got mine from TWC (part # 00689) for a few bucks each, and they are a significant improvement. Not a huge deal unless you work in a small space and have to move your equipment frequently, as do I.

OVERPRICED
Sturdy steel frame, but puny little wheels with wimpy friction locks and cheap black plastic star wheel screw-downs to lock the two front wheels. Should cost half as much. Private-labeled by HTC for Jet, and Jet must make a huge mark-up on this item. They could spend an extra few dollars and at least offer industrial-strength value for the price. ... Read more

Fits tight, does it right.
This fitting is well made, just like the rest of the Jet dust collection fittings. I am using this on a Delta Sanding station. The output port size of the sander is 3 inches. This fits in snugly. My dust collection hose is a standard flexible 2 1/2", and that falls inside this reducer snugly as well. So there you have it. This is actually a male fitting for a 3" opening, and a female fitting for a 2 1/2" opening.

A Strong Grip
This is a nice simple piece of critical equipment. If it didn't work properly, it could cause a lot of hassle (air gaps / hoses coming off). The two wires fit easily over the end of the hose and seated snuggly on each side of the hose groove and then clamped up nice with just a phillips screwdriver. The wires strattle the ribbing on the hose, creating a nice tight fit. I put on quite a few of these wire clamps without one problem, air leak or lose hose.

I wish I could say the same for the steel band clamps. I tried them first, and stripped more than I put on. Go with the wire clamps, and do it right the first time!

I didn't figure that there was much of a differnce between hose clamps. I used both - steel band clamps and wire band clamps- with my ribbed hose for dust collection. The wire band clamps were easier to put on, held better, seated well, and stayed on. ... Read more

Disappointing. Needed to be returned
This mortising attachment was purchased for use with the Jet JDP 17MF drill press. The first project was making 3/4 inch mortises in hard maple. The drill press set ring replacement in the mortising attachment would not remain in place under the pressure needed to attempt the mortises in hard maple. This product may work on soft woods or with smaller sized mortise chisel/bits but don't try large cuts in hard woods.

The fence that comes with the attachment is not compatible with the Jet Drill Press Fence (709109). Quick modifications can be made so that the "hold-down" part of the attachment will attach to the fence, but when extracting the chisel/bit with hard wood, there is enough upward pressure to pull the t-tracks up away from the fence table.

After having tightened the set ring replacement as much as possible and still not having it hold, it may be tempting to over tighten the regular set ring when you remove the attachment to use the drill press in its standard form. CAREFULL. The set ring can crack and break if overly tightened.

A real disappoointment.

Great chisels, Mortiser needs work
Jet's mortiser is heavy, well machined cast iron but the hold downs were not bent to the same radius or cut to the same length. This doesn't effect how I use the system but it may be a consideration for anyone who will not develop their own hold down and fence system to work with their particular drill press.

The fence is a piece of hollow plastic that needs some better way of being clamped tight and square to the drill press's table. (Assuming you can square it with the chisel mounted in the chuck.)

I would suggest buying the chisels from Jet. They are better than the two 10 year old chisels I have from Delta. These chisels and bits are really sharp! Mine have stayed that way although I haven't pushed them through anything harder than soft maple.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time setting up this mortiser to your drill press. Make engraved markings on the drill press head and chuck "shoulder" to readily square the mortising attachment to the table and fence. I would recommend that you build your own fence system and hold downs.

Worked well with little fuss after initial puzzlement
I got the mortising attachment with my Jet 16 1/2" drill press. I have to admit that I was a bit stumped during the initial installation as there were no pictures of the installed unit and no narrative telling me that set ring on the basic drill press needed to be removed to install the chisel holder.

Once I got past the set ring issue things went well for me. However, you need a 6mm Allen wrench to remove the set ring and this is not included with either the drill press or the mortising attachment. I can see this being a real annoyance if you don't happen to own a 6mm Allen wrench.

On performance, the tool functioned very well right out of the box. The chisels were sharp with no noticeable burrs. I have cut test mortises in fir, pine and maple thus far and it does the job. I didn't notice excessive heat build up with this mortising attachment as I had with a ShopSmith attachment I used in the past. No smoke thus far! The Better Clamp

The Controller!
With a blastgate at each machine, you can control the air flow from the DC unit as if you only had one machine hooked up, providing the most efficient use of the air suction. By opening and closing each blastgate, as needed, you will get the maximum amount of air flow at all times.

For a more "durable" blastgate, there is a metal version available at a premium. But I have found the plastic gates work just fine for most operations. The only negative item for this blastgate, and even the metal blastgates, WHY are the ends tapered? All the other fittings for the DC system do not have tapered ends, only the blastgates.

Overall, it is a good product that allows for maximum use of a dust collection system, with a blastgate installed at each branch to control the air flow to the machine in use. ... Read more
