4-0 out of 5 stars If you like having the proper tool on hand, you need this
I hated having to run to the hardware store whenever I needed to tap a hole I didn't have the right tool for. This set has just about any size you could imagine needing, in metric and standard, in starting taps and bottom taps, and small pipe threads too. The quality of the taps and dies are high, although one of my tap holders was kind of cheesy. The case is also nice - the pieces are encased in a hard-rubber form that is well-marked and protects them well. I think it's worth the money, especially if it prevents a few time-consuming trips to the hardware store! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product, awful packaging
I find this a fine product for light work. It does double duty as a convenient wide-jawed clamp or spreader.

But whoever designed the hard plastic packaging should spend eternity in hell unwrapping these things. NO thought was given to the buyer's convenience. Even with sharp industrial shears, it is VERY difficult to remove from the packaging. I would not buy another for that reason alone. In fact, the one I received already had half the package cut away as if someone had given it up and returned it rather than bloody his fingers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty nice system but needs to be improved
This seems like a good system so I bought one. It provides a swivel base and a quick-release bar clamp. Upon mounting on a table, it does seem to provide a very verstatile way to hold various objects. However, two problems soon become evident. First, the whole system has a lot of play in it, so it is not really designed for any activity that would exert more than moderate force (such as hack-sawing) on the object. Secondly, there is a defect in the design that when you clamp the system onto a table, the release on the bar clamp is practically touching the table, which makes it rather cumbersome and hard to swivel the clamp or tighten or loosen the clamp. Back to the drawing board.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great Idea!!!
I was skeptical about this clamp/spreader until I got it home! It is amazingly versatile! If you dont understand what I mean click on the picture to see how this clamp works!

The odd dome looking piece on the under side of the clamp is used to attach it to the side of a bench. And when you tighten this down to the edge of the table make sure you don't over tighten. Most people will tighten it as much as possible but thanks to the rubberized grips it just isnt necessary. Give it a comfortable hand tighten and it holds VERY securley! One note the bench must be no larger than 2 1/4".

The clamp itself can be removed from the bench attachment. While seated in the bench attachment you can swivel the clamp 360 degrees. And it does have positive detents for secure locking. You should also receive 2 sets of pads to be used on the clamp. One is smooth and the other has a no slip tread. Wilton also includes some project plans for variouse tasks. There are a few good ideas in there so check it out.

The depth of the Clamp is 3inches from the bar to the top of the rubber pad. And the jaws open up to about 13 1/2 inches. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little lathe but limited manual
I am very pleased with the quality of the Mini Pen Lathe by Jet and other than the obvious limitations of a machine that is a small version of the larger ones, it performs well. I am disappointed that the paperwork with the lathe does not include information to order replacement or accessory parts. Also, it is listed as a two-speed lathe but the manual does not describe how to achieve those two speeds. It appears to operate on the higher of the two RPMs. If you have any interest in future lathe work that might require a slightly larger lathe, you should consider it at this time. Upgrading can get expensive, as I have found out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
This pen lathe is the perfect tool if all you want to do is make pens and maybe a small box. you cannot turn anything larger than about 2" diameter but that's not the point of this little marvel.
Setup is trivial but the integrated wrenches for adjusting the toolrest and stop are clumsy to use. A wing nut would be better! (OK, kidding a little). Changing speed is a belt change that is easy to do but there is no hand wheel for manually turning the mandrel. This is a problem during finishing and sanding but is minor since you can turn it at the housing due to it's small size and inertia.

Don't but this lathe for the crummy tools in the box, however. Get a "real" set of chisels with this. What do you expect, though, when you can get these as low as $99 at times (on sale)?

You will need to clamp this down (and it has mounting holes if you prefer) but I use two 3" spring clamps and that's all the holding power it needs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pricey but works well
Yes, it is expensive for hose. This does work really well though and it probably some of the best hose on the market...... Very flexible (some types are stiff) and the ability to see into the hose is (nearly) priceless! Had something get stuck in mine last night. Would have never known until it became a bigger problem if I could not see that little piece of wood!

5-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!
This is the best hose that i have found to date.It does cost more money but it performs well.I have two sets.I also have the 6" hose.It is best to use the wire style clamps to retain the hose to the machine or dust pipe.I have seen these hose used on big molders with six heads.Hope this helps your choice of hose.
Thanks, Weyer Service

2-0 out of 5 stars Can it be cost justified??
In comparision to the counterpart black hose, the only advantage I can think of is that you can see thru this hose to easily identify where any possible clogs are located. With the black hose you have to use trial and error, and possible take the entire DC system apart to find the clog. With the clear hose, you can see it and go right to the problem spot. Is this worth almost double the price of a black hose?

That can only be answered by the user. I'm using the clear hose only off of machinery where large chips are make, my lathe and bore machine (drill press). Other than that, I opted for the cheaper black hose. I also have those two machines located the closest to the dust collection machine, so the hose length, and chip travel, is the least possible.

1-0 out of 5 stars A must for a dust collection system

3-0 out of 5 stars LIFES' TRADE-OFFS
This bench symbolizes all the trade-offs we make in life. All the gripes and complaints of the smaller Sjoberg bench apply to this bench. It's small, light, the hardware is toyish, the top is thin. Having said all that, I am glad I purchased this. An average woodworker could make a bench that is much better if he had the tools and the time. The latter is my problem. I don't have the time. Making a bench would be on a long list of projects I am working on, so I would not have a bench for a couple of years. In short this bench is better than O.K. It's not flimsy or made of particle board. It's a stopgap. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very slippery
I love the clear view of what is in the bag so I know when to empty it. Saves a lot of mess, just tie and toss. However, I found that the bags are difficult to install because the bag kept slipping off the retaining ring when I tried to insert the ring into the housing. Finally resorted to a few pieces of duct tape to hold it and got it into place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy

Reviews (2)

5-0 out of 5 stars Does a Great Job
When installing a dust collection system, eliminating resistance to airflow is what it is all about. The ideal is as large a pipe as possible, flowing in a straight line, without any ridges in the surface. Of course in the real world at least some of these things wind up being less than ideal. What this Jet 4" Y-connector does, is give you a large pipe, that makes a gradual Y as opposed to a straight 90 degree angle T, and the sides of the connector are smooth. So when you need to divide your air source into two lines, this elbow does the nicest job.
The advantage of incorporating a Y connector into your system, is that you can take a single air source, connect this Y connector to it, a pair of gates, and no longer have to switch your hoses between two different pieces of equipment. All you do is open the gate to one, and close it to the other. All in all highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Link in the DC Chain
This is a good connector for a DC system. Not a complicated piece, but a very good one. The ends were all 4" , the hose fit snuggly and the wire clamps held.

When making a branch in the DC system, to go to several different pieces of equipment, the "Y" connection is better to use than the "T". The Y will allow for a better air flow. Combine the Y with a/several blast gates, then it's almost like having a single hose go to each piece of equipment. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Jet 16" Woodworking Planner or Belt Burner?
I have been running the Jet 16" planer for just two days and shredded six V-belts.

The machine came out of the box well tuned and solid. The manual was very detailed and well written except for an error in the V-belt tension adjustment section. Assembly was easy, although I could have used a 240 V plug at the end of the power cord.

My problems with the machine came when I started feeding in my rough cut Douglas Fir lumber. I have a large supply of wide stock (1x15 inches). A few hours into running my lumber I started to experience stalls and a lack of power. Looking over the machine showed a plume of fine black dust coming from the V-belt housing. The three belts were badly worn.

The motor is mounted on top of the blade and roller assembly. The only means of adjusting the belt tension is to move the heavy motor up and try to tighten the bolts, a two man operation. The bolts are easy to reach but dificult to accurateley adjust. There is no self adjustment and a large margin of error epecially as the belts heat up.

The next day after installing new belts and a call to Jet's tech support number I tried to get to work again. (The manual has an error in describing how to tighten the V-belts.) Sadly, the second days results were the same as the first with less that three hours of machine use the V-belts were shredded.

So far Jet has not been able to offer fix other than sanding down the cast belt drive wheels. Perhaps the wide stock is to much for machine? This is a new model to the market so I can't be sure if the issue is with my machine or the design.

However, I can't wait to find out, I will return the 16" Jet and look for a planer with a better drive system.

5-0 out of 5 stars great planer
I just got my new jet 16' planer and as in the previous review set up was somewhat time consuming, and the machine is very heavy. I have only run a few pieces of pine and maple stock through it with mixed results. My initial opinion is that this is tool that will take more fine tuning then I normally would have to do and more experience in order to get the results I expect. On the plus side this planer will really hog some lumber. I tested the power of the planer by running a 9 inch wide piece of hard maple (the widest I had on hand) and the planer never hesitated. The height adjustment is clear and easy to read and adjustment is quick and easy. One more feature that I am impressed with is the four handles that slid into the base. These handles were helpful when assembling the planer and later on when moving it around my shop. The mobile base is a must with the size limitation I have in my shop

4-0 out of 5 stars professional planer, hobbyist price
First off, this is a GREAT planer. Specific things:

It comes with a 4" dust hood that works well, as long as your dust collector is off the left side of the machine. Reversible, or even rear-exit, would have been nicer.

Second, this thing takes forever to assemble. I spent about 12 hours putting it together. Part of this is because it is incredibly heavy. If you have an engine hoist, forklift, or Neanderthal available, you'll be fine. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend trying to lift it with two people.. it really needs four.

I ended up removing the motor to lighten it up a little. That helped, but added a 3-4 hours to the assembly process.

Third, delivery was a little sketchy. I couldn't get it delivered for free without a liftgate. If you've got a loading dock, consider yourself lucky.

Fourth, why not include a power plug? It comes with a ~5 ft cord, no plug. Delta's Unisaw is twice the price, but it comes with a long enough cord and plug.

Random thoughts:

The stand is sturdy enough. I'm sure some people would prefer an enclosed stand, but it isn't currently available.

The infeed and outfeed rollers are very sturdy, and are adjustable for up/down and the angle of feed. This is helpful in case they are warped for some reason.

Conclusion- great planer, the assembly process should be simplified, and it is HEAVY! The bill of lading said 573 pounds; Amazon says 396 pounds. It's probably somewhere between the two. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY
The set up of this jig is totally trial and error and the instruction booklet is loaded with errors. I couldn't believe you actually have to remove some parts to get at adjustments. The set up guide instructs you to do the first trial cut at a bit depth of 7/8". This is extremely dangerous because if you are experimenting with ANY stock, the bit will dig into the metal jig. That's what happened to me TOO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
This product is a nice quality piece of equipment for the money. I would buy it again, and it does what it is advertised to do.

I read the comments about the manual. It's not the best manual, but if you read the manual and follow the directions it's correct. The biggest problem I see from people in here and what I experienced is that you have to follow the text written directions for measuring the router base, wood, and router bit. If you follow the quick reference table, it will not be correct. It doesn't imply some of the proper math. Other than that, it's a drawer making machine!

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs clear instructions
I purchased this and have now returned it. The instructions that come with it give very clear instructions how to assemble and line up the and wood, but not clear at all on setting up the routher to use with it. The instructions walk you through one setup, using I think it was 1/2" material, but if you're using different templates (that they sell) they don't give you any instruction for setup using the other templates, nor do any instructions come with the template. I contacted JET and they mailed to me some further instructions, but they were still very hard to understand. Also unless you dedicate a router to this jig you have to set it up, trial and error, every time till you get it right, then cut your parts. It took me 3 hours and lots of scrap lumber to get a good setup, then the parts cut rather quickly, but my router bit was almost to short to hold in the collet, and wanted to keep pulling down on me. (I was cutting 3/4" material). I think I'm going to try the Porter Cable brand jig, even though it doesn't have the quick clamp system like this one does.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous instruction errors
The set up of this jig is totally trial and error and the instruction booklet is loaded with errors. I couldn't believe you actually have to remove some parts to get at adjustments. The set up guide instructs you to do the first trial cut at a bit depth of 7/8". This is extremely dangerous because if you are experimenting with narrow stock, the bit will dig into the metal jig. That's what happened to me, causing a brand new carbide dovetail bit to disintegrate. I'm lucky I wasn't injured. This is a dangerous item and I do not recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky set-up, but excellent results!
After spending the last three hours setting up the dovetail jig I was able to fashion my first drawer to my finicky expectations.

As others stated, the instructions leave a _lot_ to be desired, hence the three hour setup.

The hardest part of the setup is getting the dovetail bit at the
perfect height so the joint is neither loose nor too tight. Once you have this height. LEAVE THE BIT IN THE ROUTER!

Use of a straight "clearing bit" saves wear and tear on your dovetail bit. If you decide to use a clearing bit, put it in another router (I'm using a $70.00 cheapo router I got a couple of years ago)
The crucial concept in setting the height is that
you need to adjust 1/2X of what you measure. This is because you're affecting both the pins and tails. For a perfect fit, instead of adjusting the bit and making another pass, cut off the old pins and tails and start fresh.
One more thing. After you make the first pass, go back a second time to clean up anything you might have missed. For me, it's the difference between having to hammer the joint together and just push it together with my hands.

Although the jig clamping system appears sloppy, it should be remembered that it is only a clamping system and works quite well for this task. The stops that require adjusting during setup perform acceptably, although I fine tune the setup after clamping to ensure that the top and side are absolutely flush.

I'm quite pleased with this product. Especially considering what others are selling for. Not only does the Jet take bigger stock, but it appears that I can do both half-blind and full dovetails just by adjusting the stop. This would appear to work only up to 3/4 stock. When I find out for sure, I'll edit this review. ... Read more

It's true that this device is relative quiet (though any graphite-coated
platen will also be quiet), and the belt tracks well, but this sander
has a lot of serious problems.

First, This is really a 4-3/4" sander. It's impossible to set the table
height so that the top of table is even with the bottom of the belt.
In fact, the best that you can get is for the top of the table to
be a little more than an inch above the bottom of the belt, seriously
limiting the amount of belt width that's actually available for use.
Since I need 6" of belt, this one is a show stopper for me.

There are other problems as well:

The table-angle and table-height adjustments are Mickey Mouse.
The angle adjustment has no detents and the protractor scale is very
inaccurate and inconveniently located---you have to use a square every time
you set the set up the sander for 90 degrees. Since I move from
flat to 90-degrees all the time, this is a real inconvenience. Moreover,
the table is held up by two legs that are held in place by two screws,
and that's it. Lifting the table up from the lowest position is
difficult---there's no spring or adjustment screw as in most other
edge sanders, and lifting the table requires a lot of muscle.
To lower the table, you have to hold
up the 30-pound weight of the table with one hand while you release
the set screws with the other. If you slip, the table comes
crashing down to the stops. Moreover, the two legs of the table
don't move evenly, so it's difficult to adjust the table so that
its level.

Though the sander tracks well out of the box, tracking will
need to be adjusted as the belt stretches. Unlike other edge sanders,
there is no convenient knob to adjust tracking. The tracking
adjustments are complicated, and very inconvenient. One of the drums
is adjusted using a small (3mm), easy-to-loose hex wrench. The other
requires fiddling around with a hammer (loosening four screws and nudging
the motor into place). This is way too complicated for an adjustment
that you'll have to do all the time.

Equally inconvenient is the lever that releases the belt tension, which does
not move the drum enough for a new belt to slip on easily. It should
have at least another 1/2" of play when the lever is in the released
position. Consequently, belts have to be worked into place rather than
slipping on smoothly. Finally, you have to remove the dust-collection
hood (three easy-to-loose screws) to use the end stop.

In all, I was very disappointed with this sander. The features that
the other reviewers raved about (such as being able to use
the end for contour sanding) are available in every other sander
on the market, including less expensive ones. Almost all edge
sanders come with graphite-coated platens, nowadays. I'd go with
just about any of the other alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality Product!
First I'd like to comment on the packaging. I was pleasantly surprised how well they packaged this heavy item for shipping. Even though the carton was torn open at the corner from FEDEX, the styrofoam encased unit was not even scratched. While assembling the unit, I was extremely happy with the quality of the components. The unit runs smooth & quiet. I also like the storage area below for spare belts etc.. My only criticism, and a minor one at that, would be a couple of steps in the assembly instructions that could be clearer. This is the second Jet Product in my shop. I also own the 3 hp. cabinet saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Sander Will Take the Place of a Belt/Disk!

If you're looking for a good, general purpose sander, and you're considering spending a few hundred bucks on a combination belt/disc sander, consider this...

This Jet edge sander will give you a much higher capacity and will perform all the tasks of the belt/disc sander plus give you new capabilities.

It will surface-sand pieces up to 36" with full platen support underneath the piece (you don't have to move the piece to fully sand the entire surface). The end of this sander COULD eliminate any desire you have for an oscillating spindle sander, as well. The curved end of the belt enables shaping and smoothing of curved pieces.

And, of course, it's great on door edges.

Dust collection is better than you'd expect, too.

I use this machine a whole lot more than I ever expected to, and it is one of the best tool purchases I've made.

Great belt tracking, quick belt changes.

One warning, though... It's topheavy, so be careful! You can't push against the platen without turning the machine over! It needs to be secured to a platform or either placed against a wall.

The machine comes with an import motor, of course (a Mao Shan), but mine's been smooth and quiet, and never seems strained.

Overall, a great machine!

4-0 out of 5 stars Jet Edge Sander
This is an excellent product, built with the quality that I have come to expect from Jet. The factory alignment was right on, in terms of right angles, and the tracking needed only minor adjustment, which is easily done. I especially like the end table, for sanding contours. Dust collection seems to work pretty well. The only defect is cosmetic; the paint is peeling from the cast iron table edges. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars wasted my money
I bought these plastic blastgates because they were cheaper than aluminum. What a waste of money! I broke two of them while installing, the slots jam up with chips, and they cannot be taken apart for cleaning. As my funds allow, I will be replacing the plastic with aluminum.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's all the whining about?
I've used these blastgates for about a year in my home basement workshop and have never had a problem. I'll admit I don't use the shop every day, but for the casual user, these gates work great! I have about 4 of these in use. Most of the gates are connected on a hose or pipe in a vertical position (where the gate control is horizontal). This might help the problem that others on this forum seem to be complaining about (with dust collecting in the gate slot). As far as the taper goes, I'll agree the design doesn't need to be tapered. However, using the wire hose clamps tightened securely, I've never had one come off when I didn't want it to.

1-0 out of 5 stars dust jammer
i wish i had read the reviews about clogging. fine dust rapidly accumulates in the grooves the gate slides in and makes closure impossible. works fine on my router table and planer (i guess the chips are too big to get stuck in the small crannies) but any tool making dust will clog in short time

2-0 out of 5 stars Blastgate Needed - Not This One!
With a blastgate at each machine, you can control the air flow from the DC unit as if you only had one machine hooked up, providing the most efficient use of the air suction. By opening and closing each blastgate, as needed, you will get the maximum amount of air flow at all times.

For a more "durable" blastgate, there is a metal version available at a premium. But I have found the plastic gates run into problems with use. They jam with debris and cannot be taken apart to clean. The spot welds, which hold them together, will lossen with use, then the sliding gate, which is a friction function, will not operate properly. The metal gate uses a screw to kept the gate open.

Overall, it is a needed product that allows for maximum use of a dust collection system, with a blastgate installed at each branch to control the air flow to the machine in use. BUT, do not invest in the plastic version, go with the metal blastgate.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont waste your time
I would not buy these. They jam with dust. These do not come apart for cleanout. These will only work in a dust free shop. (A shop that is not used.) I recommend the metal gate at the same price. The metal gate is sturdy and solid. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent floor sweep
I agree with the previous reviewer that this is an excellent "tool" to clean up all of the dust and scraps that have would up on the floor. The unit it self is sturdy and should stand up to lots of use. But that is not all it can do.

I found one very cool use for the floor sweep. Since I don't have a sanding table with built in dust collection, I tried something different. I clamped the floor sweep to my bench top and sanded my project in front of the sweep. All of the sanding mess was sucked up into the sweep and away into my DC system.

I definitely give Jet Floor Sweep 1003 and my Jet DC 1100 a big thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Finishing Touch
The Floor Sweep is an excellent "tool" to clean up all the dust that escaped from the DC system and made it's way onto the floor. The large size, about 24" by 6", with a 4" outlet, allows for a quick and easy cleanup of the shop floor. Just use it like a regular vacuum cleaner. The plastic housing is heavy duty, will stand up to a lot of use, and abuse.

Include a blastgate to the floor sweep, then you can turn it on and off when needed. It is somewhat too large and bulky to clean the bench tops, but does an excellent job on the floor. It is worth setting up a branch on the DC system just for this floor sweep. ... Read more
