Everything about this drill press says quality, whether you're a professional or a home do-it-yourselfer or woodworking hobbyist. To our delight, this model doesn't feature the belts and pulleys of the lesser machines; rather, there are two variable speed ranges—from 150 to 1100 rpm and 500 to 3200 rpm, suited to your material and bit size. The table is larger than those found on other brands with the same throat capacity, and bigger is always better where that's concerned. It rides extremely smoothly on a rack-and-pinion system that requires practically no effort. We like that the power switch is right on the front of the head, rather than on the side, for quick starts and stops. When we examined the 1/2-inch chuck, we found yet more quality in the Jacobs name. It runs like a dream with no play that we could discern, assuring a quality bore every time along its 6-inch stroke. It's hefty at 230 pounds, so there's no vibration whatsoever. Perfect for the cabinetmaker or exacting home woodworker.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Delta has done it again. The TP400LS 12-1/2-inch planer is a solid addition to the company's already stellar lineup of planing tools, and it is ideally suited for the home woodworking enthusiast looking for a good planer at an affordable price. Like other Delta planers, this Shopmaster model is designed to provide smooth results, superior snipe control (thanks to the four-post cutterhead support system and headlock), and fast, safe, and accurate blade changes. Powered by a 15 amp, 120-volt single-phase motor, the planer generates an operating speed of 8,000 rpm. As materials pass into the unit, two double-sided, reversible knives deliver a blazing 51 cpi to smooth rough surfaces and provide an attractive finished result. The double-sided steel knives come factory-indexed and fit directly on machined posts in the cutterhead, so there's no fiddling with knife-setting fixtures or tricky gauges. Plus, a magnetized blade-removing tool makes it a snap to get the blades out. Delta has also extended the infeed and outfeed tables on this unit to 28-1/2 inches to better support stock and included a sturdy stand to give you the option of making this a freestanding unit. --Carl Thress ... Features

  • Complete with a stand and extra set of reversible knives
  • 15-amp motor for maximum power
  • Advanced cutter head lock for superior snipe control
  • Easy knife changing for perfect alignment each time
  • Longer chrome in-feed and out-feed tables

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the small investment
This is my first planer - so I really have nothing to compare it with. Set up was very easy, most time consuming part was assembly of the stand - took about 20 minutes (even at my normal slow pace). The planer itself was a snap - just install the knobs and remove some packing material and you are ready to go.

I ran some maple and walnut throught it and was impressed with the finish, smooth as glass. I used a digital caliper to check thickness in several spots on the boards and they were pretty much dead on. The only thing I wish this machine had was some sort of "final cut" mechanism, so that you could preset your final dimension and not go any further with the plaining. I guess that is something you would expect on a much more expensive machine. I highly recommedn this planer to any home woodworker.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kicking Myself
This is my second Delta 12.5" planer. The first one lasted about 2 years with moderate home shop use before the cutter head bearing assembly failed as I was preparing to insert a board. A spectacular array of metal and plastic shrapnel flew around the shop, and some into me, before I could cut power. Although Delta Factory Service agreed it was most likely a manufacturing defect, alas, it was a month out of warranty and the cost of repairs would far exceed the purchase cost of a new one. Oh yes! And the knife retention screws were so tight it broke my hex wrench, rounded the inside of the screws, and 6 of them ultimately had to be professionally extracted.

But I have a mostly Delta shop, already had the dust collection chute, and so I bought another one figuring some design and manufacturing improvements had been made. Not. Same experience with the knife retention screws this time breaking the tool provided by Delta to remove those screws. The hex heads are so rounded off on the inside I don't dare put them back in. I had to haul it in to have 4 screws professionally extracted. Those screws, incidentally, apparently aren't covered under warranty and charged out at[money amount] each at the Delta Factory Service Center. And the motor is making a suspicious growling sound -- after 12 hours of use! I'll live with my purchase mistake, and wince every time I turn it on, for the duration of what I'm expecting will be a remarkably short lifetime for this planer.

Buy something else. I should have...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Planer!
I purchased the Delta 12 1/2" thickness planer with stand and am very pleased with its performance. Having previously rebuilt a DeWalt unit, I was reluctant to try an unfamiliar unit but relied on Delta's reputation. Warning! Be very careful in changing the cutter blades the first few times as they are very sharp and a bit small to handle at first. The settings and accuracy of the unit are excellent with depth cuts of no more than 3/64" which will not overwork the unit or dull the cutter blades. After planing some 35 board feet of maple, popular, and birch, I am still on the original blade edges. You won't go wrong with this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Machine
I bought this in mar 2003 and have used it exstensively with
nothing less than exellent results. The finish quality, easy
setup, and outstanding power for such a small machine is nothing
less than you can expect from delta. For the smallshop,or inbetween shop, this powerhouse is a must! Buy it you won't be sorry. Also get the dusthood acc. with an elbow and use the suction part acc. of your leaf blower and you will have 0 yes I mean 0 woodchips & dust works excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine / New trouble
A very well made Machine ; easy to use less snipe than many others. Be careful , First time blade change can be frustrating
because of( factory Set Torque ). on blade retaining screws! Hope your hex wrench
is stronger than mine . ... Read more

Sure, you could spend a day in your shop building your own tenoning jig. Or you could spend the day making furniture with this one. Your choice. We know what we'd choose, that's for sure. Delta's universal jig fits any table saw that has a 3/8-by-3/4-inch miter slot and adapts to right- or left-tilting arbors. You'll get top-quality craftsmanship with the microfine-thread adjustment knob, allowing you to adjust width-of-cut settings to a hair for the snuggest possible tenon fit. We particularly like Delta's redesign of the handle. Most tenoning jigs we've used have one handle, sometimes up too high to offer good control. But Delta's replaced that with two, positioned at the jig's base, just where we always thought they ought to be. Another good innovation is the thumbscrew that lets you quick-release the hold-down clamp support. As for accuracy, it's hard to do better than this. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Roughly Made Jig
I bought this after using the older model and was very disappointed in the quality of the castings and the hardware. The old one, which is still available at a lower price, is a better made piece of equipment. The "deluxe" version is sloppier in its movements and reminds me of the junk we used to see out of China several years ago. Of course the simple operations required of this jig may not require it to be sophisticated but its still disapointing. I sent it back and bought the cheaper one from Delta which works great and I like the handle placement better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable value
This jig was purchased to be used on a late-model Unisaw, which it fits perfectly. It delivers very fine work. Many of these Chinese accessories have to be washed with solvent to remove the cosmolene, but that goes with the territory. The base had to be deburred, or it would scratch the table top, but I would expect to have to do that with an American-made tool nowadays. A few minor criticisms of the engineering: the jig will tilt, and as everyone has table saws with either tilting arbors or tilting tables, I question the utility of this feature, without which the tool would be much simpler---and presumably cheaper. There is a button which one pushes to disengage the female threads for the micrometer adjustment, making quick lateral movement possible. The spring which keeps the threads engaged is too weak, and using the micrometer in one direction is useless. What with inevitable backlash in such designs, I question the practicality of the micrometer. One of the handles is placed too close to the triangular knob which tightens the upper jig to the sled that rides on the saw table, making tightening clumsy. I wonder why Delta didn't just have the grand old tenoning attachment made in China, or else make this present design much simpler, and sell it for less than $60. Having said that, it does the job, rock solid, no chatter or slop. I would also very much like to see a guide rod with provision to read off the distance from the sawblade both inboard and outboard.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hardware is of poor quality
The jig itself does the job just fine. The fine tuning is acceptable. However, I was only able to make around 50-60 tenons on this jig before the set screw which holds the turn handle on gave out. It stripped entirely too easily, despite the fact that I was using the correct sized allen wrench to adjust it. The set screw often didn't stay set, so I affixed the proper sized allen wrench directly to the jig with a magnet. So, now, I'll need to drill out the hole and put in a new set screw.

The method for affixing the turn handle to the jig is sheer folly. I've checked out the Jet tenoning jig and, as of about a year ago anyway, had a much superior design. If I had it to do over again, I would pick up the Jet or Powermatic.

The deficiencies in this jig remind me of the problems with Delta's mortiser (which I thankfully steered clear of after using it in a class and noting the many problems with how Delta botched the set screw adjustments on it).

Delta makes some great table saws, but some of their other tools aren't as highly rated in my book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta 34-184 Tenoning Jig
I had the identical experience as Frank McKee, bum screws in the mitre bar. Delta shipped a replacement bar with set screws separate, no questions asked. I was up and running in a week and the jig performs as advertised.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta 34-184 Tenoning Jig
I bought the jig to speed the process of making tenons. For that purpose it does exactly what it says it will. The only reason I don't give it five stars is the quality of the screws used. When I went to adjust the miter bar two of the three hex screws stripped out, they are either very soft and of poor quality or put in with Loc Tight. One thing in favor of Delta. I contacted a local, California, factory service center. They have ordered the entire miter bar assembly and will send it to me to replace the current one. With the quick response for service it restores my faith in Delta. So far, I have had great luck with Delta Products... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, easy, lowCPI, snipe, uTables, uLife Blades
I was looking cheap, just to clean up some rough-hewn boards. The bottom-end Lowes had was the TP-305 (12.5" vs TP-300 12.0", otherwise EXACTLY the same) for $199, so I got that.

Into and Basics
First off, the TP-305 is single speed.Fine for my purposes. As someone else said, if you're doing "fine woodworking", you'll sand with high-grit before calling it done.

Everything is metal, and the handle on top doubles as a foam covered transfer roller. It's very solid and stable, you know, for a "portable".

The belt drive is about 3/4", versus about 2" for the Hitachi and DeWalt.Conversely, the belt on the Delta is fiber reinforced black rubber, like a fan belt, rather than being clear, plain rubber.

There is supposedly a chain-drive for gear reduction, but I haven't dismantled it yet to lubricate them.

Setup
Second, it was a snap to prepare.I pulled it out of the box. It's maybe 75 or 80 pounds.OK if you lift right, or 2-person lift otherwise. It included the planer assembly, a dust chute with 2 fasteners, a hex wrench which fits in a slot on top, a magnetic blade tool, and a crank handle with hex-head fastener.

I put it on top of a table. No LRF support, and there was a little flashing on the bottom, so don't unpack this onto a nice table.Something like this should be bolted down. The deck holes are 1/4", one on each corner.I used some washers and deck screws and that was more than enough to keep it stable.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
You NEED earplugs.Yes, it is "quiet" compared to some shopplaners/jointers, it's still loud.Earmuffs should be OK, but I opted for spongy/expanding 33db earplugs. No problem there, but I was definitely deaf to the world.

Also, goggles are a must. These two things are silly and simple, but just in case you didn't know. This might not be so important if they ever get immunology and organ cloning down, but since you're limited to one set of eyes right now, best protect them from flying debris.

If you want to reach, adjust, oil, or perform ANY maintenance, unplug your machine."I thought I was safe but something fell and flipped the switch" wouldn't quite cut it with your friends.

ALWAYS operate with the dust chute in place. The motor blows air into it and it sends the chips out the back.Without it, A) You'll be covered in vertically launched curls, and more importantly B) The top of the cutter head will be exposed, which is very not safe.

Keep distractions and horseplay away from this machine. This is not a toy, it's an 8000 RPM spinning blade of doom.No playing.Period.OK?JUNIOR!?!?!Are you LISTENING TO ME!NO PLAYING.Ok.Good.Serious machine.

SNIPER, NO SNIPING!
As a portable planer goes, the fold-out tables are fairly small.I tried using Skill brand roller stands on each side to help hold the workpiece, but this planer loves to snipe on ingress.

Tilt your board down into the planer about 5 degrees, and don't cut deep and you'll limit it.Even so, every board has a 2-3" spot that's maybe 1/32" thinner than the rest of the length.

Egress snipe is alleviated by lifting ever so slightly on the workpiece for the final stretch. If you don't get it, you'll hear the motor change speed as it chews into the end. It's really just the design of the rollers.I think you'd probably get snipe even if you made your own full-length table flush with the input.

With 12" boards, snipe was not very noticeable, whereas with 4" boards, it was always very noticeable.

Blade Lifespan
The blades that came with it do well, but it's only 2 blades. It goes through them fairly quickly.Newer wood is fine.I made several passes on both sides of rough hewn cedar. All was well. I sent through some 12" rough cedar with 25 year crusty paint, and it wasn't really happy with that.

It's 2mm per turn and on 12" stock with fresh blades you can do that. When you get to 1/3 turn and it still drops the RPMs significantly, you're past the life of the blades.

I got to this point after removing 3/16ths from each side of 40 feet of 4" wide cedar, and about 1/8th from each side of a 6' long 12" piece of paint encrusted cedar. It seems that the wider board heats the blades more, especially the old, rubbery paint, and once they heat up, the edge fades MUCH more rapidly.

Signs your planer blades are dull
The machine emits dust and not curls.
The machine leaves roller rubber on the workpiece.
The wood peels along the grain in very thin strip.
The motor slows down, but there is no output.
The rollers stop feeding.
The workpiece becomes polished, even glassy.
The workpiece is noticeably warm to the touch.
Running the workpiece through a second time at the same setting till slows the motor.

Blade Replacements
I'm thinking I'll see if I can design the same at http://www.emachineshop.com out of something harder under heat, but you know, since I don't REALLY have the skill for that, I picked up a couple sets of spare blades when I got the planer. The spares were $26/set and made of "High Speed Steel".I don't know the specific grade, but truly, they went south REALLY quickly on the wider, painted boards.

Blade Swap procedures
The swap is fairly easy, though they are initially installed with an impact wrench.Breaking the screws the first time gave off sparks on three.Freaky.Anyway, you access the six screws by:
A) Unplug the machine.Yes, UNPLUG IT.Switches have been known to fail in this universe.Don't risk it.
B) remove the two thumbscrews on the top.
C) Remove the dust chute
D) Turn the head with "the tool" such that you an access one side of the head. Adjust the machine height, or rotate the head such that the tool clears the handle/rollerbar.
E) Loosten the screws such that the black plate ALMOST comes loose.Test one screw for proper sizing.I think this is about a 16th of an inch.
F) Use the little split magnet tool to scoop under the blade, lift up off of the retaining pins, and pull out.
WARNING The blade may be hot if it's recently been used, especially if it's really dull.
G) spin the blade.
WARNING The sharp side of the blade is SHARP!I know this seems like an idiot thing to say, but if you aren't careful, I will mock you for your bloodletting experience.Yes, I'm secretly watching you.
H) Slid in, align such that it drops down properly (ie, the retaining pins are in the holes).
I) Tighten the screws, starting with the ends and working your way in.In generaly, thumb-tighten all of them, then torque them down afterward to make sure alignment is good.
J) Repeat for the other side of the head. (ie. always swap/replace BOTH blades at the same time).

Miscellaneous
Check your belt shroud, a burgundy curve of plastic on the top right of the machine.Mine had too much flashing in the channels and didn't seat properly.I didn't notice until it had been carved/sanded away severely.

The deck plate is polished steel. You can see the cutter head and rollers clearly in it.It's really cool, and might come in handy should something jam or clog.REMEMBER NOT TO TOUCH THE HEAD WITH YOUR FINGERS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE CUT.

Yes, I used first and second person in a review.

Despite the warning that this is not a toy, etc., it's VERY fun, or at least satisfying, to see what a machine like this can do.

SUMMARY
This is cheap. Snipe will happen.Rollers, an assistant, or a full-sized and aligned table are greatly helpful.Blades dull quickly on older wood with old rubbery paint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible for the price
I was not expecting a lot from this planer. My expectation were; it would dimension lumber, but I would have to do the final clean up with a sanding disk and, it would probably stall midway through cuts requiring me to push or pull the wood through manually. I was wrong on both counts.

First day I used it I did a couple of hundred feet of old seasoned lumber. No problems. Yes, it's a sniper, but I have used planers costing thousands more that have also sniped (if not as deep and long), so I expected that and can easily live with it as I always dimension to length after planing.

The bad.
Noisy - to be expected
Does not include a dust extraction hood.

The dust hood (DeltaNo. 50-359) is an essential accessory (with a dust collection system). Without it you would not be able to see the machine after a couple of cuts, and the feed mechanisms would get jammed. The $25 hood is almost identical to the 'deflector' that comes in the box, so it can't cost more than a few pennies more to make. Why not include it in the box instead of the deflector ?

I paid $175 ($25 off coupon) and free shipping. An absolutely incredible deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprises at a Low Cost
This is also my first planer but not new to using them. This planer was a pleasant surprise. From the softest to the hardest of woods it has worked flawlessly. The finished piece is smooth as a babies bottom.
Yes, this machine does produce about 3 inches of snipe but still I am well pleased. Very much worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good planer, but it is a sniper
This is a nice 12.5 inch planer for less $$$ than the 12 inch models. It is my first planer so keep that in mind.

I have run a 12" X 20" X 2" maple cutting board with excellent results. It seems to have more snip with narrower stock.1"x4" ash, red oak, and pine seem to have excess, easily visible snipe for about 3" on each end.It is best to run long boards, then cut them to size and discard the ends.

I like the carry handle, but this unit is heavy and awkward to carry.Minor assembly needed upon receipt was a breeze. With $25 off coupon and free shipping, it is easily the best deal on the net.BTW: the free shipping was FedEx 3 day!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Satisfied
I bought this saw after being totally confused from viewing so many models at Home Depot and other retail outlets. But could I really buy a heavy woodworking machine over the internet?! Would I do that?!

Well, I did.

I am totally a happy camper as a result. It didn't even have to be calibrated -- it was right on the money at 90 degrees right out of the box.

The posting by the other reviewer really influenced my decision. Thanks to you (who ever you are).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great saw, awesome price!
I had read many reviews on miter saws on the web and got a pretty good idea on what to look for I took a strait edge, square and indicator to the store with me and carefully inspected all the saws I was interested in. I was surprised to learn that the table on most of the saws moved a good bit out of alignment when the miter setting is changed to 45 degrees and set knob is tightened. All of the saws moved to some extent, but the Dewalt 705s I originally was going to purchase proved to be the least stable, the Dewalt 706 was nearly as bad. The Dewalt 10", Dewalt 12" sliding saw and the Delta 10" were the most stabile of all I checked. Neither of the two 10" saw tables moved when tightened. The Delta MS450 was the most stabile of the non-sliding 12" saws I inspected.
I decided to buy the MS450 based on my findings. I took it home and checked the settings, no adjustments were needed. I decided to put the saw threw its paces and was very pleased. The saw cuts without effort and sliced threw a pine 4x4 like it was air. The motor is both quiet and powerful at 15 amps. I made some 45 degree miter cuts on 3" oak and the resulting 90 degree angle of the assembled pieces was a precise as my square could reveal . The saw itself seems to be well made and the base of cast aluminum seems very rugged. The included extensions are a bit thinner then the Dewalt extensions, but they are solid and more then ample. The included "piece stop" works fine and is adequate for its use. The included clamp is Ok, it will move wood away from the fence when initially clamped if you don't keep an eye on it. Most likely I will become used to it and grow to like it after becoming familiar with its idiosyncrasies. The only negative thing I can think of is common to most of the saws I saw. Most have a 40 tooth blade which is a bit too coarse for making fine cuts. I bought a 100 tooth blade for fine cuts, the 40 tooth blade will be fine for most purposes and I intend to use it more then the 100 tooth.

I am an above average woodworker but hardly an expert. I am an electronics technician and mechanic by trade with my main skills being in industrial electronics, computers and precise metal work. My main reason for purchasing this saw was to be able to make cuts accurate enough to build attractive cabinet frames, doors, to be able to make single cuts on 6" trim and be able to cut 4x4 posts at home. I have never done crown molding, but have decided to give it a try so I need some precision. My tendencies in tool purchases are a balance between quality, usability and cost.

My understanding is that the MS450 was designed to compete directly with the Dewalt 705. If I were using a saw daily to cut heavy lumber without regard to precision, I would buy the Dewalt 705 as I believe it is built somewhat more rugged and would take the daily abuse of a jobsite slightly better.
For making more precise cuts with some occasional heavy cutting by a hobby woodworker the Delta saw is much more then an average user will ever need and it will give great service for many years.

This saw was bought at Lowes. Initial asking price was $250, to my surprise the cashier gave me a $50 rebate slip at the register. Total cost of the saw after tax and rebate will be $217. 87. This is an amazing value for an accurate well built 12" compound miter saw! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Value
This is a great lathe, and a bargin for the money. All the features you could ask for and more in this price range. Sturdy frame, solid motor, and quality hold-down levers. The ability to rotate the headstock is great, and the ability to slide the headstock down the bed for small work allows you to use large tools with small bowls. With the added arm for the tool rest you can work up close to a bowl without losing the distance the "banjo" or tool rest base usually takes. This allows for a full 7" radius (14" diameter)
Speed adjustment is great (just remember to slow it down before you turn it off so it is set properly for next time!). Spindle lock feature is a nice necessity, and the 24 position segmentation feature is nice as well.
Get this lath - you won't be sorry!

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but problems to know
I have been using this lathe for approximately 1 year and this is what I have found.
I bought the lathe as a first lathe. I was inexperienced and on a budget. With those things in mind, it did well for the first few months. All the items were there, it shipped fast and was not difficult to assemble without assistance from anyone else, though I recommend getting a friend to help with some of the lifting.
I noticed a rattle and some vibration, but it was very minimal and it didn't seem to affect performance. I satisfactorily turned several bowls and a lot of spindle work. The motor gets a lot of bang out of the 3/4 horses. The mobile headstock is very versital. The tool rest is quite good. For a starter lathe it is a nice tool.
Now to the problems.
1) The base is not heavy or rigid enough. That is an easy fix and not a real detractor.
2) The tailstock base does not lock down well enough and I find myself retightening it frequently.
3) The biggest problem now is the constant worsening of the rattling and the vibration it causes, which translates into the spindle and handwheel. It makes it impossible to rechuch anything accurately and vibration is extreme, even with small loads. One of the pulleys is definately mis-machined and has both horizontal and vertical displacement while running. Delta has the pulleys on back order from their overseas supplier. I therefore took it in to the local authorized dealer and have yet to hear back. A wobbley handwheel and spindle movement make turning unenjoyable.

Searching the web and the message boards, I have seen about an even number of people saying they have had no problems as those who have had worse problems than I have. Most seem to revolve around the reeves drive and quality control...Perhaps the overseas manufacture of this lathe is at fault, I don't know.

If Delta could fix the problems with the drive and pulleys, this could be a great mid range lathe. With the mechanical difficulties I am having now with only moderate use (1-2 weekends a month), I could not recommend this lathe unless you test the specific one you are buying to make sure it is in good working order.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems!
I purchased my Delta 46-715 lathe from Amazon.com. It and the free goodies that were promised were delivered promptly. This is my first lathe so I have nothing to compare with the Delta but thus far, I've nothing to complain about. Assembly and set-up was easy, the machine works exactly as advertised, it's heavy (and thus stable) and now, I understand why woodturners are always grinning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Pleased with Delta Quality
I'm in the market for lathe. Considered buying the 46-715 due to price and features - and then I remebered my frustration with my Delta machines. My 6" jointer came with a fence that was badly misaligned. Customer service told me to ship it back - not an easy thing to do, especially when it's already been assembled in my shop. Called local repair centers - they said it would be months before they'd be able to get to it. So, I fixed it myself with some shopmade shims. Works fine now. My 14" bandsaw with riser block was so terribly misaligned that my blade popped off the wheels. Sent it back for another. Pain in the neck! Went ahead and ordered table shim kit and upper wheel alignment shims from Iturra Designs knowing that I'd have to use these on the replacement bandsaw. Seems like Delta would fix these problems. So, with this in mind I'll spend the extra money to steer clear of Delta. Sorry Norm.

1-0 out of 5 stars Many manufacturing and design defects in this lathe...
My neighbor got a Delta 46-715 as a birthday present. After setting it up, he and I were checking it out and discovered that the variable speed mostly didn't work. Total change was perhaps 500 RPM, if that. After a lot of head scratching and several calls to Delta Service (who basically said "ship it back") we figured out that the pulley was binding on the shaft. After taking the whole variable drive assembly apart we found a manufacturing defect on the drive shaft. Fortunately my neighbor has access to a machine shop and we were able to turn the defect out of the shaft and now the lathe changes speed fine. A year later, we decide to take apart the tailstock because the quill was binding. We find that the key way for the quill was completely torn up (it looked as if the key way had been badly cut, then brazed, then recut), that the quill itself was badly out of round, the design for the hand wheel relies on friction alone to turn the quill (just a single set screw pressured against the threads of the spindle bolt), the end of the quill locking bolt was completely out of round, and the mechanical drawing of the tailstock shows a long key holding the quill in place (the correct way to keep a cylinder in a sleeve from rotating) which certainly isn't how the tailstock was manufactured. Basically the entire design is pretty cheap and the manufacturing process that released the parts and assembly was definately defective. It took us a year to notice the tailstock problems because I've mostly been doing facework and have only recently (the last few weeks) been doing a lot of center work. So the tailstock fell apart basically after 3 weeks use or so.

Essentially a lathe only has two parts, the headstock and the tailstock and on this lathe both have had major defects in either manufacturing or design or both. I give this lathe only one star, for ease of assembly. For the price it certainly isn't worth it.

For the record. I bought one of these for light production work on my farm, but I bought it used and got a clean one for very little money. If it gives me too much trouble I can always just scrap it or donate it to a school and take the deduction. I would certainly never buy one of these at retail prices. Spend a little more money and go with any of the other major tool manufacturers.

Some further data is now in. I ordered replacements for the quill and the screw that moves the quill. I was told that both parts were in stock, so I sprang for the next day shipping. The quill arrived the next day, without the screw, which had been backordered. I called the next day and was told the screws would be back in stock and shipped the following Monday (3 days), it's been nearly a month now and I'm still dead in the water. Delta service really bites. I certainly wouldn't buy this product (and, at this point, any Delta product) unless I was forced to. ... Read more

Raised panels, here you come. And you'll never have to buy another piece ofmolding again. The Shopmaster SH100's powerful 9 amp ball bearing induction motorwill run 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch bits at 12,500 rpm through any stock you feed it. It comeswith a two-piece fence, and the halves are independently adjustable, so you'll get precisedepth of cut and ample support post-cut. The clear blade guard does double duty, keepingchips and dust away from your face and helping the dust chute pull out the waste. Weparticularly like the spindle control knob and its height indicator scale, which makeadjustments easier. The lock knob securely holds your settings, and the 3-3/4-inch insertopening will take even the beefiest bit. The 18-by-20-inch die-cast aluminum table offersgreat work support and has a slot opening for accessory holding devices. Finally, thepower switch has a removable lockout key, so little fingers won't be able to turn on theshaper when you're not there. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta SH100 Shopmaster Bench Top Router/Shaper
ASSEMBLY: Assembly was straightforwoard and took less than 30 minutes.

SETUP: Table alignment was acceptable out of the box.

PROs and CONs: I purchased this tool for use as a router table rather than a shaper, and it seems satisfactory for this purpose. However, the overhead blade guard did not fit in the hole provided in the table, nor did the replacement Delta sent me. The usable vertical spindle movement is only about 1-1/4 inches, limiting the use of longer bits. Finally, the small size of the adjustment knob makes adjusting the bit height more of a task than it need be.

1-0 out of 5 stars You'll be sorry you spent the money
I used (not much) one of these for about a year in my home workshop. There is NOTHING good that I can say about it, except that the motor did actually run.

Notes:
- Lack of power, single speed, bogs down under load
- BAD BAD BAD Fence adjustment. You just can't get it set accurately. Can you say snipe?
- Poor height adjustment, but it can be done.
- Table top is sharp and rough, which makes feeding your material difficult and unsafe.
- No place for featherboards on the fence
- Single speed too fast for big bits, too slow for small ones
- The use of this machine will lead to a near terminal case of frustration.

For a hundred dollars more you can buy a Rousseau router plate, Bosch 1715EVS router, build your own table, Incra Ultra Lite jig (use as router fence - it's great with a slight modification - see review on amazon). I've used this setup without any trouble at all at least twice a week. Please, please, please don't waste your money on Delta's worthless router/shaper.

2-0 out of 5 stars Know what you're getting into
I bought this device with a very specific single purpose in mind, and was able to make it work with a LOT of effort. I wanted to do tongue-and-groove on some long cedar boards for paneling, and after a lot of futzing was able to make acceptable joints on all my boards. It was cheaper than a good router and table would have been.
That having been said, this is neither a router table NOR a shaper, and combines the WORST of both. The fence adjustment stinks, ditto the height adjustment (see other reviews). The hole in the top won't accept wide bits, so I had to use a spacer board to get my planks to the right cutting height, which is why I had no problems with the sharp edges on the tabletop snagging my workpiece. The extension table accesory requires the removal of the fence and dust collection port. The single speed is too slow for small bits and too fast for big ones. This is not a very adaptable or flexible machine. Buy a router and table.

4-0 out of 5 stars Minor faults
I bought this after I discovered a cheaply made table and add on router cost more. I've heard all kinds of complaints for adjusting the combo set-ups. I did not want to hassel with that. The Delta works real well. Table top is good. Fences are good quality but a little hard to adjust. I have only used 1/4" cutters (My local hardware does not have 1/2") and have trouble removing them. I'll order the 1/2" cutters. My main complaint is the depth adjustment. I had expected it to be more accurate. I'll have to work with it more and get used to it. Overall a very good machine for the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars I do not know what the problem is?
I have been pleased overall with this shaper for the price. My major complaints are the fence has no t-track or fine adjustment as is,and why can't the manuf. give you a real wrench instead of the poor quality stamped wrenches. I already have cracked one, which Delta replaced. I use a real wrench now and want to change the fense some day.For now I add another face to it.
The height adj. will not be accurate if you lower it to final height but the manual says to raise it to final height and then is no problem with the lock down. Sometimes it pays to read it.
As far as height length of the bit,my unit will allow the spindle to extend beyond the top?
If you wax the top you will not have any marking, or spray a coat of clear poly on it. Woodworkers are in the habit of waxing and polishing metal tops all the time.
The collets self release, but 99% of the time I use 1/2" shanks. Do you want to use a 1/4' shank on a shaper unless you have no choice? I have no problem with the 1/4' sticking on the rare occasion that I have to use it. I avoid 1/4 shanks if at all possible. As with all self releasing collets, you have to continue to turn the nut to get to the self release feature. Over insertion on any collet can cause problems too. That is a universal problem. Also as mentioned, quality router bit can also make a huge difference.
I have no run out, the inserts line up, and there is good dust collection and I am not sucking dust into my router as most will when upside down. I can use it at job site too even though it is heavy, but that is a plus for stability and lack of vibration.
It is not a $1000 shaper, maybe others thought it would perform like one. If you want that type of performance spend the money.
I have milled almost a thousand feet with this unit and would buy it again. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When you're ready to step up to the professional woodworking scene, this jointer from Delta helps design your calling card. Materials up to 8 inches wide glide across the cast-iron infeed and outfeed tables. The fence adjusts with rack-and-pinion precision, beveling 45 degrees in and out with positive stops at 90 and 45 degrees to give you the angle your work demands. We appreciate the easy height-adjustment lever that keeps the guide close to the three-blade drum--no matter what the position--through its 1/2-inch range via a parallelogram support structure. Delta realizes the use of heavy machinery carries a great risk of injury; consequently, they designed this jointer with a large, easily accessible on/off paddle switch at shoulder height on the right side. Driven by a 1-1/2-horsepower induction motor for use with a built-in dust collector port, this jointer will complement any woodshop. --Justin Paul ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smile every time I use it
I purchased the DJ20 locally, and hauled it home in my station wagon. It was a chore to haul into the shop, but once up on the mobile base it moves around nicely. Decided to wire up a 220 volt outlet rather than run it on 110, which I think helps it start faster. The tool was in great shape, no dings or scratches, and it set up easily, once the preservative stuff was cleaned off. I too was disapointed with the lack of a dust collection port. The response I received from the Delta rep, after complaining, was that Delta left it off, because there were as many people who wanted a 4 inch port, as wanted a 6 or 8 inch. They couldn't satisfy everyone, so they left it off. I was a little disapointed with the primative ablilty to set specific angles with the fence, but once locked down, it seems to stay put. I have done a number of 45 degree joints and they turned out perfect time after time.
I found the machine to be extremely smooth and quiet, no vibration at all, in contrast to some of the other reviews. All I hear is a gentle hummmmm. The cut is clean with no hints of cyclic machining marks. I also regularly use it for small rabbets, on the order of 3/8 inch with no troubles, again in contrast to earlier reviews. I really like the parallogram setup for depth adjustment. I am always playing with depth of cut depending on whether I am just starting with rough wood, or taking my final cut. All I do is unlock, raise or lower the lever, and relock. It takes only a second or so. Everything comes out really FLAT. I know the table is long, but I sill use infeed and outfeed supports for really long boards. I looked at, and ran a number of boards through the Jet, Powermatic, Grizzley and Delta gib based 8 inch jointers before purchasing this one and after almost a year of use still feel I made the right decision. I really do find myself smiling after using it and having it perform as I expected. I would buy it again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Customer Service
I bought the jointer through Amazon/Tool Crib. Amazon was great - no problems at all. I had initial concerns about how I would get this heavy machine off the truck once it arrived. Consolidated freightways was excellent and couldn't have been more helpful. During the assembly process, I noticed that the jointer tilt gauge had been sheared in half. This is a cheap aluminum part on the fence. The fence was packaged under the heavy jointer and probably sustained the damage there (in crate). I called Delta for a replacement and didn't find them to be particularly concerned. They told me they would send me the part in a week. I called back after ten days and have now been told that it will be another week (I got the impression that this is a standard line). You would think that when you invest [so much] in a product that they would be a little more responsive and concerned than that. This has certainly given me cause to think about future Delta purchases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Industry Standard
There are three primary requirements that all jointers must meet. 1. The in feed and out feed tables must be perfectly parallel. 2. The fence must form a right angle along it's entire length across both tables (if it doesn't form a right angle there's not much hope in getting it to work at other angles). And finally, 3. The in feed and out feed tables must be long to facilitate accurate straitening of lumber prior to being run through a thickness planer. All of these factors are met and in many ways exceeded by the Delta DJ 20. I've owned mine for 15 years and I can attest that this is the best jointer I have ever used. I've owned two combination jointer thickness planers in the past and neither of these machines came close to the DJ 20 for accuracy in jointing lumber. The mechanisms for either removing or lifting the joiner tables out of the way to use combination machines as a thickness planer effect the accuracy of the jointer tables, regardless of how well or heavily built these machines are (one of my combination machines was a 20" jointer / thicknesser and weighed almost 2000 lbs., horrible jointer, constant problems with table and fence alignment). I would never recommend combination machines to anyone other than a casual weekend warrior with very little workshop space.

The 8 inch capacity may seem limiting, but in reality this is not an issue. The parallelogram mechanism for both the in feed and out feed tables is superior to anything I've ever seen and it makes altering the depth of cut a snap. This machine is a beast as far as weight but a jointer needs to be heavy... really heavy. Nothing is more frustrating than a lightweight jointer "walking away" from you as you try and straighten lumber. My previous shop was in a basement, the DJ 20 slid down the stairs (with three people controlling it) like a dream. However, getting it out was interesting and took four strong men (three at the bottom pushing and one at the top pulling), ramps, dollies, tie down straps and a healthy amount of grunting... it was a miracle the three of us behind the machine came out alive.

One recommendation I would make for anyone considering the purchase of this machine is to get the mobile base. You may have the luxury of a permanent location for this machine, but the mobile base makes moving this monster so much easier. The mobile base also means someone is not reefing on your perfectly aligned in feed and out feed tables to get it to budge. Others have mentioned a problem with vibration. Mine had this issue when I first bought it, but I corrected this by ensuring that the motor and cutter head pulleys are in alignment. Dust collection is not an issue but don't buy the Delta attachment, as others have indicated it is for a 5" diameter hose. Instead buy a $5.00 plastic one and screw it to the cabinet, works just as well if not better.

When I purchased mine it was made in Brazil by Invicta. I'm not sure where the current models are made, but if Delta was smart they would not mess with something that was basically perfect and a standard piece of woodworking equipment in any shop dealing with solid wood. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One great machine
Without getting technical, I will sum this machine up by simply saying that after one year of regular use, my DJ-20 has performed flawlessly, completing every task I have asked of it to perfection. I could not be happier with it. I've straightened and flatenned many boards with it and I enjoy using it immensely...it is a true pleasure to use and own. I would buy it again and highly recommend it without reservation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Watch Out!
The stand that accompanies this tool is not necessarily made in America - don't let them tell you otherwise. The base and motor are also manufactured in China. I called Delta and Amazon specifically to ask if the stand and motor were manufactured in the US and they said yes. I asked who made the motor for the 37-350 and they told me one of two american companies. Wrong. I now have paint chipping off of a stand purportedly made in the USA which has "Manufactured in China" printed plainly and clearly on the plates. I give Delta customer service a 1, the base a 2, the motor a 1, and the jointer a 5, resulting in a very favorable score of 2 stars. I buy products made in America, well, I did. WATCH OUT!!! ... Here’s a top-of-the-line jointer that’s equally comfortable in the professional’s shop or the home woodworking workshop. Its weight offers the stability the professionals and dedicated woodworker demand, and you can’t help but admire its bounty of high-end features. Our favorite feature is probably the extra-long infeed table, at a remarkable 42 inches. Like others in its class, it has three cutterheads, rather than two, but unlike others we’ve used, these knives adjust quickly and easily, thanks to Delta’s jackscrew arrangement. The 5-inch-high fence tilts smoothly and easily, and the rabbeting ledge makes a nice generous 5/8 max rabbet. You won’t be short on power with the 1-1/2 horse single phase motor that’s completely enclosed in the cabinet, where it stays clear of shavings and sawdust. We like the placement of the power controls, right where you need them should you have to shut down quickly. The bed is smooth as glass, and using it is an absolute pleasure.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I should have bought this jointer in the first place!
This jointer is priced at the high end of the 8" class - a fact I had to come to terms with before I finally made the "plunge". In my mind, I've always downplayed the role of a good jointer until I started serious woodworking last year. When I set up my shop I purchased a 6" jointer with a short bed, in an attempt to save some money. I've wanted a larger, more precise jointer ever since then. After quite a bit of deliberation, I finally decided not to risk another disapointment and purchased the X5.

Be ware - watch who you listen to. A salesperson at one of the local woodworking stores told me that the X5 units were made in the USA to tighter tolerances than the standard units. I can't speak for the tolerances but, my X5 was not made in the USA and it turned out that their floor model wasn't either!

The main jointer casting was crated and packed extremely well. The base was cardboard boxed with little packing, making the sheet metal easily subject to shipping damage. Fortunately, mine made it through the shipping process just fine.

I did have to work out one problem: I noticed a large "knot" at drive belt, at the seam/joint when I first assembled the unit. The knot in the belt contributed to an extremely high vibration. I installed one of those red link belts. I'd read about their ability to drastically reduce vibration and folks who use them, swear by them. Again - I'm a believer! Nearly all the vibration went away after installing the new belt.

As I said, I haven't measured the tolerances but I am pleased with how this jointer operates. In my mind, it's been worth the cost to move up to this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new favorite in my workshop
I own several woodworking machines by Delta, Powermatic and others. This is one machine, however, that I really felt compelled to write a review on. I recently upgraded to this machine from a Delta 37-195 6" Professional Jointer which I was, for the most part, very happy with. I made the switch for two reasons; length of the infeed/outfeed tables and weight of the unit. At only 200+ pounds, the 6" jointer had a tendency of not staying in its place when edge jointing larger boards and securing it permanently to the floor in my basement shop was not an option. The only real issue with the DJ-20 was getting it into a basement workshop based on its bulky size and overall weight of around 500lbs. This was done with 3 people and a large capacity appliance dolly. With minimal setup time, I was absolutely amazed at the difference between this jointer and the 6" Delta I was used to. Overall, depth adjustments are much simpler and more accurate, due to the smoothness at which the infeed table moves. The accuracy and power of this machine makes even face jointing 8" hardwood stock a simple task. The amount of chipout as compared to other jointers is minimal. I am amazed at how quickly I can square up a board to a near perfect 90 degrees EVERY time no matter how rough the stock initially was. The bottom line is that I purchased this mahcine for its weight and infeed/outfeed length, but ended up with the larger capacity and an entirely new level of accuracy. The possibilities that this jointer have opened up to me will bring my woodworking to the next level. The free mobile base (mail in coupon included with the unit) is a great feature as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top of the line
I have only had this jointer a short time, but it is great. It will face surface full 8" wide boards effortlessly. Edge joints are exactly 90. Proper setup takes some time and you will need someone to help you lift the jointer onto the stand. Overall, it is a great jointer. I would purchase it again. ... Read more

I bought this saw to do precise molding work. The saw has the capacity that Delta states, but, here are the negatives:
The miter table was not flush with the base. This creates a problem when making precise cuts. I mentioned this to Delta and they felt that the saw was in tolerance. So I went to Lowe's and put a square on all of the miter saws displayed, about 4 Deltas, 3 Hitachis 4 Dewalts and 1 Makita. All of the Delta miter saws resulted in their miter tables not being flush with their bases. All the other machines were machined near perfect. My two other complaints are simple. The (what I call, for a lack of a better term) "tear drop" bevel pointer was very difficult to read when positioning the bevel to other degrees than 0, 5, 10, 20, etc. Lastly, the saw is quite heavy. To some, this may not be a problem, however, for on site work, it may become an issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great wonderful saw
I was at a wood woorking convention one day (looking for a mitersaw) and i was stuck between this and the dewalt, this saw has the same capabilities plus many more. The sliding clams beat the dewalt's screw down clamp, with minor ajustments this saw does 80% of my jobs for me. It is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delta 36-412 review
Like another reviewer I too researched a lot of saws. I didn't need the slider capability, but did want max capability short of the slider. After looking at various brands, I found that on several (Dewalt the worst) that the table lifts slightly when the mitre knob is tightend. I found all the new Delta models to be dead on, regardless of what setting you select and tighten the knob down. The 36-412 is dead on.

I suggested this saw as a birthday gift to my lovely wife who decided to give me one. I have only had it a few days, so this review is first impressions.

Most adjustments were dead on out of the box. Only the L & R 45 detends needed a hair of an adjustment. This is easy to do with the cam adjustment mechanism. A brillant idea. Beats most of the other methods I have seen.

This saw is amazing. All controls are upfront (except for the Bevel stop over rides), and easy to use. The scales are large and readable. The miter scale has a 1/2 degree vernier, that with some practice could give 1/4 degree accuracy. The capacity is excellent. The trick for cutting the 9" high stock on the fence is the articulated rear guard moves up as needed. Really slick. The 60 tooth blade that comes with it is excellent for general carpentry, but I plan to replace it with a Forrest blade in the near future for furniture work. No laser, but that is a "nice to have", that I can live without.

Overall an outstanding tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of searching lead me to this saw...
I had done a lot of comparison shopping and price was not really an issue. I looked at sliders, regular and everything in between. For me this saw will do probably 99% of everything I need it to do. For that other 1% I have other power tools to handle those tasks. Capacity is great and the fence adjustment is slick. Mine was set up pretty good right out of the box. Everything checked perfect with the exception of a minute adjustment to the right hand fence. Not an issue in my opinion.

I was torn bewtween this and the Delta TwinLaser 12". I wanted dual bevel more than the lasers...although I bet they come out with that combo soon! Unfortunately I just couldn't wait. The crown stops are also nice. They will speed up your cuts dramatically.

Works for me.....

5-0 out of 5 stars DELTA Is King Of The Mountain
I am a tool columnist for two boat-building magazines. I have never seen a non-slider saw with this cutting capacity! Delta has an actuation geometry that allows their 12" saw to even out cut the only huge 15" name brand miter saw. The blade is very good with a non-stick coating for smooth cuts all day long. The fit and finish is superb and the new crowns molding flip-up adjustable stops are a feature every saw should have.

The price of this saw makes it a fantastic deal. This saw should give any woodworker an edge because it is consistently on the money. I know several carpenters who do not have room to put a sliding saw in their truck. They have been dealing with saws that could only cut a diminutive 2"X8" board at 90 degrees. This new Delta has given them the freedom to cut much larger crown molding.

Now Delta has also provided the largest line of accessories for any compound miter saw in the industry. They have a complete selection of biesemeyer extension tables and great clamps to make sure your project stays on the table. Delta has accessory blades, mobile stand, flip stops and gang stops ready to put the finishing touches on an already super saw.

I also put my dial indicator and machine squares on this fantastic machine. Everything was perfect, even the dramatically new double blade guard. The adjustments for the sliding fences will make you flip at the ease of use. So if you need more than your moneys worth buy the Delta 36-412, it has my highest rating.

Amazon.com Product Description

Here's a benchtop tool that packs the power of the big boys. With 6 inches from bit center to column, you can drill with ease into the center of a foot-wide board with a 3-1/4-inch stroke and a chuck jaw capacity of 1/2 inch. The cast-iron table tilts left and right to 90 degrees with a positive stop at 0, and offers variable-speed control at the turn of a dial. Changing speeds is as simple as turning the knob, allowing you to drill at 500 rpm up to 3,100 rpm. Have some repetitive drilling to do? The adjustable-position locking depth stop takes the trouble out of the job. Rack-and-pinion table depth adjustment makes raising and lowering the table no work at all, and here's a nice bonus--a built-in gooseneck lamp. When you're done drilling, just pop out the removable safety switch to prevent unauthorized use. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Features

  • 2 year limited warranty on machine, parts and accessories
  • Variable speed option, 620 to 3100 rpm for drilling in a variety of materials
  • Motor mount pivots for easy and fast speed changing
  • Position locking depth stop for easy repetitive drilling operations
  • Table tilts up to 45 degrees for accurate angle drilling

Received quickly from Amazon. Box was in very poor shape although all components were ok. After two weeks of light usage the variable speed spring sprung its spring and pulley. Took three hours to put parts back together after finding all the pieces. One week later the spring popped again. This time I tried a washer under the spring because the sheeve in the pulley came up. Has held for two days. Also the chuck started continuously dropping down from the arbor when using 3/8 inch or larger drill bits. This has become an unsafe tool.

Contacted Delta who readily accepted my problem (without a serial #) and ordered the parts... Spring, washer, pulley and new chuck. The spring and pulley were on backorder but yesterday I received the replacement chuck and washer. Waiting on the other parts. There is no guarentee that replacing these parts will fix a design problem.

Can not figure out why the Delta engineers (?) did not hinge the top plate. Removing six screws and washers every week (to lubricate the VS pulley shaft) will soon become a bore.

I am seriously considering upgrading to a JET drill press ($$$ for floor model). They appear to be more solid and professionally made. But for the price......... you can not beat the 12" Delta VS althought this tool should be put on Amazon's discontinued list.

I would not buy the variable speed again. Changing belts is easier than trying to compress a spring while installing a lock washer. Maybe Delta can provide a tool for this task.

Received replacement parts. Retainer still the same. Am replacing with a collar. Pulley new design. Has a setscrew now. Took 3 weeks for parts.

I e-mailed Delta about the reviews shown here and asked about the problems with the speed adjusting spindle and pulley. A rep called me the next day and reassured me that my unit based on the ser# has the revised design. I must say that the product so far has been flawless. I dinged it one star for the 6 screws on the spindle cover and the inacessibility of the angle scale.
It is a great bargain tho'!

4-0 out of 5 stars bang for your buck
i have bought shopmaster products before because i'm trying to outfit a rough workshop on a budget and found them good enough considering the price tag. that said i was VERY pleasantly surprised by this drill press. all the pertinent parts are cast iron, nice and heavy. although you do have to make your height adjustments by hand, the action is nice and smooth.

downsides: the chuck has to be pressure fit into the tool, not exactly ideal but it gets the job done. the speed adjustment is made by opening the top of the tool and moving the belt to different sized spindles. i would have prefered a gear shift, but again though it's ungainly it gets the job done.

overall, if you can afford it go ahead and buy a better press, but if you're on a budget than you can't really get a better deal.

1-0 out of 5 stars delta seven weeks and still waiting
If I knew what I know now I would think twice about buying delta products. Longer warranty does not mean that they can obtain the needed parts for service . For example I turned in my dp350 to an authorized service center 12-30-2004 for defective drill speed adjuster guess what? they could not obtain the needed parts til today 2-19-2004. Can you go without a needed tool for that length of time? Other delta products I own ,portable 12.5" planner and a 2 stage dust system. when I replace these items it will not be made by delta.

3-0 out of 5 stars Variable Speed Mechanism is Junk!
Operated machine a total of a couple of hours when the pulley mechanism on the motor (part of the V.S.) blew apart. Put it back together and within minutes it was in pieces again. This time with the cover off the spring loaded parts, held on by a tiny retaining ring, (very dangerous) flew every where even puting a hole in the drywall. Send the bomb squad to work on this puppy. This is my first drill press and first piece of Delta equipment and I gotta say what a disappointment. Norm wouldn't be happy. Delta customer service was excellent in obtaining replacement parts. Had an improved v.s. pulley design (a simple set screw on the steel sleeve) delivered to my door within a couple of days. They even shipped me a new motor, although the shaft was fine. This new pulley should should fix the problem, but time will tell. ... Read more

The first time you run a workpiece through this jointer, you'll know thesatisfaction that precision brings. You'll be surfacing pieces as wide as 6-1/8 inches witha maximum pass depth of 1/8 inch over a 2-1/2-inch, three-blade cutterhead. If you'veused a benchtop jointer in the past, you'll love stepping up to the JT360, with its 46-inchbed and 4-7/8-inch fence that tilts to 45 degrees--in and out--for beveling and chamfering.Positive stops are at 45 and 90 degrees. The bed is cast iron, and the infeed and outfeedtables operate smoothly on the gibbed dovetail ways. What's nice about moving up to thismodel is its 1/2-inch rabbeting capacity, perfect for picture frame moldings and lots ofother projects. We're even impressed with the stand's solid, wide footprint andcomfortable 33-inch height. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I took this machine home, had it set up in an hour or two and was on my way (TAKE YOUR TIME). I decided to really put it
to the test by face jointing two 5' lengths of 6" wide jatoba (brazilian cherry... One of the hardest woods in the
world). This machine was able to smoothly take 1/8 inch from the jatoba with one pass for a perfect joint. Also,
out of the box this jointer was perfectly configured. Fence was right on, infeed and outfeeds were perfect as
well as absolutely flat. Since this test, I've used the jointer extensively and am still using the factory blade edges.
Another "should-mention" is the fact that there is absolutely no vibration at all, and this is with the standard poly v-belt.
I just can't say anything negative about this jointer. One of my most confident and satisfied purchases yet!

2-0 out of 5 stars Rick Hogue
I purchased this jointer about 6 weeks ago and I'm returning it to Lowe's tomorrow. First, this thing vibrates so bad when running there's no way it could make a smooth cut. I adjusted the belt several times, no help. Second, it wouldn't cut a straight line for anything. I checked all the settings, everything is right on, blades are the right height, tables are parallel, everything is as it should be. It just won't make a straight edge and the more you run the piece through the more concave it gets. I even ran a perfectly straight piece through it and it did the same to it. The tables are out of flatness a little but not enough to cause this I wouldn't think. At least I don't have to dissassemble it before I return it. Think I'll give Jet a try.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still building...
This takes a little time to assemble. As a favor to other purchasers of this unit, I am recommending the following. Be sure and have on-hand a good socket set w/ 12-14mm sockets and an extension; preferably one of those hinged automotive ones. Small wrenches are included, but I have absolutely NO idea how one would accomplish final tightening of all bolts w/out a socket. Also, be sure and read thru the steps, then think them thru and reorganize them. If you simply followed steps exactly as laid out in the manual, you would end uo covering up important bolts that are used in later steps for adjustment. My two cents. Can't wait to get it running. Along w/ the Delta mobile base, this has become a significant assembly project. My table saw was nuttin' by comparison... I give 4 stars because everything is there, nothing is busted, and the unit is built like a brick latrine. WHile a long-time Amazon customer, I too bought this at WW. Their price is presently a hundred dollars less than toolcrib.

4-0 out of 5 stars good machine for the price
Purchased this machine at woodworkerswarehouse. They had on sale for $349.00 and got 10% off that with credit card purchase. ($317.27) Not bad. Of course when I got everything together on the machine a small piece of the outfeed table adjuster was cracked and useless. Took everything back to the store even though I live near a Delta store and they took it back with no problem. Got a brand new machine with no questions asked. The machine is great to use and have no problems as of yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars JT360
I just purchased this jointer on the weekend, and have only had time to set it up and make a quick test cut. The set-up took me a couple of hours alone, and I had help lifting the jointer body onto the stand. All of the parts were there, and nothing is missing. There is a lot of grease on the table and blades so it can be a bit messy getting everything assembled.
The price of this unit was a pretty good deal. As an average home woodworker I expect it to last a very long time. I wish it was 1hp instead of 3/4, but I don't know yet if that will make a huge difference for me.
I ran a piece of maple through it an was very impressed by the clean, true edge that was produced. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it but still too early to give 5 stars
I purchased this sander about two months ago from Tool Crib to replace a Sears's stationary sander that is 20 years old. Compared to my old sander this is one heck of a machine. Very heavy and solid. Much more powerful than the Sears sander it replaced.

Pros:
Price: The least expensive sander in its category.

Heavy Duty! This is a beefy machine compared to the Craftsman. Appears to be a quality, industrial grade tool. Be sure to run a dedicated 30A circuit for this sander. I ran a new 30A, 120-volt circuit, but ran my shop vac and sander on the same circuit and tripped the breaker several times in less than 10 minutes.

Powerful! You cannot stop the sanding belt no matter how much pressure you put on your work piece. Aggressive sanding with the belt that shipped with the sander.

The 12" disk sander works very well. The tables seem flat and generously large compared to my old machine. The stand, even though having 4 legs instead of a cabinet is sturdy and stable.

Cons:
Not too much of a problem, but worth mentioning: the sanding surface is several inches shorter than the Sears sander (same belt size 6 x 48 inches) because the front roller on the Delta has a much larger diameter than my old Sears model.

There is a small tag riveted to the top of the unit, just proud of, and parallel to the sanding belt on the right side. As you move your work piece side to side while sanding, the tag won't let you move a wide board off the right side of the belt. Again, not too big a problem, just grind off the rivets attaching the metal tag and remove it. Delta should re-evaluate placing the tag there in the first place.

The tracking of the belt that shipped with my sander does move from side to side while in use, and I can't seem to stop the movement by adjusting the tracking. It's possible the sanding belt is defective, I'm going to try a new sanding belt to see if that helps. Even though the sanding belt tracks side to side, it does not come off, and I am able to use the machine. If this is normal tracking for this machine I'll be disappointed, I'd think the belt should track pretty much perfectly straight. But, like I said, it's still too early to say for sure.

The Dust collection port is sized for a 4-inch dust collection hose. I use a Porter Cable shop vacuum with a 2 1/2-inch hose. Delta does not offer an adapter that allows easy use of a 2 1/2-inch hose. At Delta Customer Support I was advised to have an adapter fabricated at a sheet metal shop. That is a dumb remedy on the part of Delta. However, the dust collection hood that was a part of my Dewalt 734 thickness planer came with a plastic adapter that works perfect. It slips over and attaches to the Delta 4" dust port, and a standard 2 1/2" vac hose slips inside the adapter. No hose clamps are needed. The adapters are available from the Dewalt web site, listed as a replacement part for the DW734 for $3 each. Delta should get smart and ship their product with a similar adapter.

Conclusion: Again, I have not used this machine long enough to know everything about it, nor have I used any other sander in this catagory other than my old Sears model to compare it to. I do have a few other quality machines for comparison, old Delta Unisaw, Powermatic 8" jointer, etc., and I think the Delta sander is close to being in that class. Over all, I like the sander, and would purchase it again if I had it to do over. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the jungles of the Amazon.com
I ordered this table saw on March 17,2004 and up until now I could not use it. ABF freight systems lost the guide for the Bisemeyer fence. On March 29, I received 3 pallets out of 4 and ABF said they will complete the order by that Friday. The following week (Wednesday), I called ABF and they told me the piece was missing. Tried to contact Amazon.com, account was suspended for reasons they can't explain later. For one whole week I couldn't get in touch with them. Can't send them e-mails. I got so frustrated, I typed the words "amazon.com" complaints on yahoo.com. My3cents.com came up and I got the Amazon.com customer service number. In the meantime, ABF is still looking for the missing piece. Customer service is no help at all. They should call it Customer Diservice". Everytime you call them you have to tell them your story and they will relay your problem to the tool departrment that would answer you if they want to. And if they ever answer they will give you a wrong information. Last week I told them that I want to return the table saw. Their attitude is OK no problem. They don't have any idea that the table saw weighs 450lbs. and I have to hire somebody to unload it from the ABF truck. The following morning, I sent them an e-mail telling them that instead of me sending them back the table saw why don't they just send the fence. Then they answered me back. They said the original missing piece was found and is on the way. This time, they contacted me by phone. I called ABF just to make sure if it's true and they said nothing is on the way to me. I tried to contact by e-mail (3 times for 2 days), no answer. I called the "customer diservice" and told them the story over again. After 30 minutes the same customer disservice person who informed me that the fence was on the way 2 days ago told me again that it's on the way and it's in Kansas. I called the ABF discrict manager again and he told me again that "nothing's on the way to you". I ordered the table saw on March 17 and today is April 20, I still couldn't use my table saw. I guess my order is lost in the jungles of the Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Saw
After nearly a year of saving, I ordered my Delta 5hp left tilt unisaw. What an incredible machine. During assembly everything went together perfectly, including the rolling stand. The saw performs flawlessly. The Biesemeyer fence is a joy to use. I had doubts about whether 5hp was overkill -- not at all! The extra power makes sawing a smoother and, therefore, safer task. As I put the saw together, my twelve year old son was on hand. This is the one tool in my shop that I am certain will be his someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cabinet Saw
This saw is awesome. Cuts 2" pecan, hard maple, oak, etc, effortlessly. The Biesemeyer fence system is the most accurate and sturdy I have found. I cann measiure NO deflection of the fence even with heavy hand pressure laterally. Infeed and outfeed tables are high quality and relatively easy to assemble. The addition of a Forrest Woodworker II blade makes it just about the "perfect" tablesaw. Produces mirror smooth rips and crosscuts in all wood types used so far. The miter gage is "acceptable" but one would think that Delta would come up with a better one for use with a saw of this quality. Settings on the accompanying gage cannot be relied upon without several test cuts. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Saw For The Money! ** 3-3/4 STARS**
Performance is very smooth and the dust collection box is a nice addition to this Delta Scrollsaw! The lower blade clamp is difficult to use due to limited area available to move fingers around in...NOT recommended for anyone with arthritis! Dust blower needs major improvement in pressure but for the money, all in all, this is a good saw. The stand reduces vibration 100 fold and the On/Off lock switch is a great idea for anyone with youngsters around. Extended table is a great improvement for supporting large, delicate fretwork pieces and the tilt table is great for beveled wood working. This is a nice improvement from my last Delta Scrollsaw but Delta still needs to make changes to the increase "available work space" in the lower blade clamp area to make it more "user friendly" before I'd consider giving it a higher rating. I've been operating a scrollsaw for over 7 years to make my living and so far... so good with this model! ... Read more

I purchased this saw to trim out a room I added in my basement. Excellent value. Solid 13 amp motor easily does the job. Easy to adjust. Bolts to the Delta table stand using existing mounting holes. Include dust bag and blade. A clamp for material would be a nice added feature, but can be purchased as a add-on.

I already owned a sidekick (sliding compound miter saw). I purchased this for more portable use and lighter weight. Look around for the Delta package that includes a free extra blade, extension cord, tool holder, tape measure, and builder's sqaure. If you find that, you've got quite a deal. Great for small trim work. I've used it for quarter rounds, base, etc. Setting the angles for compound cuts by hand does require some care. But single angle cuts are a "snap" with the positive locks at 45, 90, etc.

ASSEMBLY: Assembly was straightforwoard and took less than 30 minutes.

SETUP: Blade alignment was acceptable out of the box. Miter stops were accurate but the bevel indicator was off and difficult to adjust.

PROs and CONs: This saw has produced nice clean accurate cuts. However, the bevel indictor is difficult to read accurately.

I have used one at school several times and it is great for theather were accuresy is not a concern be other wise it succs. its fence is not tall enough to stack two 2x4 on face and cut sfly. It is 13 amp not 15 amp. the mitewr scale is pathetic no verner agustment for fine tuning miters no preset stops.blade guard dose not side or move well at all.

This is an excellent miter saw for the money! It comes with instructions on how to adjust it because it is not a precision saw out of the box. Actually mine needed no adjustments (Lucky?).

My first cut was thru a 4X4 treated landscape timber and it was very true to square, cut very fast and was suprisingly accurate.

I've not done any trim work yet but everything is tight and measures very accurate.

For the money, you can't go wrong (BTW, I bought mine at Lowes).

I'm just a typical homeowner and very pleased. ... Read more
