Amazon.com Review

A remarkably compact tool, DeWalt's 3/8-inch, 3.2 amp right-angle drill is designed for electricians, plumbers, remodelers, and anyone else who works in tight places. The drill offers good speed (1,200 rpm) and weighs 3-3/4 pounds. The tool's most distinguishing feature is its paddle-type trigger, which runs nearly the length of the tool's body, allowing the user to engage the drill using all manner of inventive hand configurations. The molded neck makes the drill comfortable to grasp by the head, as well. The paddle trigger, however, does make it possible to engage the drill unintentionally while you're maneuvering or when you set the tool down. In order to make this drill so compact, DeWalt had to make a few design compromises. The tool has a keyed chuck; a keyless chuck, when you think about it, makes the drill's nose significantly longer. The drill also doesn't reverse, and depending on the materials you'll be drilling through, this is something to consider before you buy. But for anyone looking for an extremely compact drill that's built to last, this DeWalt is a smart buy. A key and a rubber key holder complete the package. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

Features

  • Keyed chuck for a more compact profile
  • 100% ball-bearing construction
  • Compact right-angle design for easy access in tight places
  • Paddle switch for easier grip in limited access positions
  • 1,200 rpm, single gear reduction

4-0 out of 5 stars DeWalts DW160
The construction of the DeWalt DW160 right angle drill is surprisingly good being that the enclosure is all plastic. The drill trigger is ruff cast aluminum and sized for someone with a certain size hand. The drill is made for right hand users and can not be converted to lefty. The trigger design could be improved upon by removing the bar that runs from the top to the bottom of the drill to allow you to grip the drill fully and not end up inadvertently turning it on. The weight of the drill is very good and the compactness is exceptional. It would have been better if this drill was available with a keyless chuck. The drill motor is very quite and supplies smooth operation but does not have variable speed. The power it provides for drilling through floor joists is more than adequate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good sturdy drill
Bought this drill while I was rewiring several rooms in my house. Got it to drill through floor joists, and it did just that very well. Compact size with good power.

The handle/trigger is tricky, and I unplug it before changing bits or if I'm done using it for awhile. Otherwise you're likely to activate the drill accidentally. Did it once, luckily didn't get hurt.

But, the length of the trigger is good for one thing. With 2 x 10 joists, I was able to get the drill bit up into the upper part of the joist without having to stick my hand all the way up there. No keyless chuck, but that may be why it's compact. Keyless chucks are about 2-3 times as long as a keyed chuck, so for size issues, I don't mind it here.

4-0 out of 5 stars What no variable speed and reversing?
I did a lot of looking around at medium right angle drills. The drawbacks on the Dewalt is no variable speed, and no reversing. So it may be prone to stripping screws, and now way to reverse them out when they do. Ouch. For straight drill of holes it is great.
If you have air around, and don't need to make large holes in 2x12s, the air driver Porter Cable is sweet. Has air pressure, to create torque and variable speed adjustments, and has reversing capabilities, and is the best price on the block.
My pick is the Makita 110 volt model. It has the largest amperage motor in the medium duty range, has variable speed, reversing, and an adjustable speed limiting dial, an LED light to illuminate your work, and is guaranteed to last the lifetime of the tool.
Next is the Bosch with a slightly weaker motor at 3.8 amps, and doesn't have the speed range of the Makita, even though it is at the same price. Nice overall tool though.
Then comes the Milwaukee 55 degree angle drill. Fine for additional leverage while drilling, but could be a problem for deeper access areas when making 90-degree applications. Especially important in crammed quarters, when you would have to swing the body out the additional 35 degrees to get a 90-degree angle.
Black and Decker makes a lightweight unit, and will suffice for the occasional weekend warrior.
The Dewalt unit, fills a niche, but is a very good example of getting what you pay for. If it were not for the no reversing, and no variable speed capabilities, and for making the paddle switch so long, that gets in the way, even when you don't want it to, makes the unit, strictly for those who are price conscious first, and tool conscious later.
Wake up and smell the Makita. :-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Full time construction worker
I own this particular drill, although it is a powerful drill for a compact right angle drill, the major draw back for me is the non-reversing feature. What I have needed to use it for mostly is driving in screws in compact areas such as the inside of cabinets. If there is a need to remove the screw for adjustment of what you are working with you are really up a creek. Other than that it is also not variable speed which is not critical but would definitely be a plus if it were variable speed. I would recommend the makita model although not as powerful it has all the things the dewalt model lacks. P.S. A friend of mine has this drill and while trying to change the bit with the drill plugged in accidentally hit the trigger driving the chuck key deep into his hand. VERY PAINFUL!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Right Angle Drill
I purchased this drill two years ago when it first came out. While this drill is certainly heavy duty, it has been a disappointment. It has a very dangerous switch which is easily turned on when you are working in awkward positions, as typical with right angle drills. Also, it lacks variable speed and reverse which was not clear in the description when I bought it. My brother has a Milwaukee (made by Sioux) right angle drill which is hands down better which I would recommend instead. ... Read more

For one of the lightest models on the market, The DeWalt clipped head framing nailer sure packs some power. At just 7-1/2 pounds (thanks to its magnesium housing and magazine), the 51822 still delivers up to 900 inch/pounds of driving power. Its conservative 12-3/4-inch height lets you toe-nail where space is at a premium. DeWalt’s unique design buries nails even in engineered lumber with minimal recoil, putting less stress on your body. Ergonomics get another boost from the comfortable, curved trigger and shock-absorbing grip. Resetting your depth of drive is blessedly tool-free, fast and easy, and we also like the quick-release jam-clearing feature for its savings of time and frustration. Safety is a priority, with a dry-fire lockout that keeps the tool from firing when the magazine is empty, a trigger lock-off to disable the tool when not in use, and a steel exhaust deflector that protects the tool if it’s dropped. DeWalt even tucked a pair of safety glasses in the box. A reversible rafter hook will let you hang the tool from a rafter or keep it handy on your toolbelt.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not all it claims
This gun claims to have low recoil-totally false! My husband bought this gun for me because of the low weight and recoil advertisement, and well after using it for 2 days I could not bend my wrist or grab anything. This gun needs so much force to use the trigger and the recoil is so severe it is unusable. My husband also used it for a day and agreed, and after being in construction for 8 yrs he could not stand it. He has used Porter Cable and Paslode and would never recommend a Dewalt to anyone. In fact he bought me a Paslode today to replace the Dewalt. Horrible gun and be prepared to miss work days due to wrist pain! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt cordless light-flexable neck
I sure do like this light. Light is bright, and lasts a pretty good long time. The only thing that I didn't like about it is that if you set it down on the battery, and raise the lamp up and point it down, it becomes unbalanced. but...that doesn't hinder my using it...love the light.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy Work Light
I have used this flashlight for about one year and it has become alost the only flashlight I use. In Cabinets it illuminates the entire space, no fumbling to re-aim or balance or juggle. In crawl spaces you can set it up and work in a wide area without having to fool with the light, like a portable flood light. This and my LED headlight are all I need anymore. Great tool, and no worries about having fresh batteries!

3-0 out of 5 stars A very expensive flashlight
Works as advertised, the only downside is that I hate to let my kids use it as the cost of the batteries make for a VERY expensive flashlight. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars DW433K Power Sander
This is one sander that can/do.If you want a hefty sander, one that sands flat, one that works as advertised, one that will give you results better than you wanted or expected then this is for you! It's hefty but it helps with control and staying flat. This sander has power to spare, I used 80grit on some oak and pine after using a router/surfacing jig to get out the rigids (my other cheapy sander burned out,got my money out of it tho')and it took no time compared to my other one. The weight helps to counter the power of the sander which will take off if you don't work with it. Let the sander do the sanding...that's what this baby does, no need to push down at all, if you do...OOPS now you'll know why. But the design, balance, weight and power all work with each other as long as you stay over it and let it do it's thing. The dust collection is something else, be prepared to get dusty. Read it's going to be fixed in later models, how much later? Fix the dust problem and it's an easy 5!:)

5-0 out of 5 stars best 3 x 21 belt sander out there
I am a professional carpenter/cabinetmaker and I recently purchased the dewalt 433k for work. I used to favor porter cable sanders until I saw this sander at a home improvement store and compared it to other brands. I chose the dewalt for its 3 wheel system for getting into tight spaces, the cord being located on top, multi-position handle, variable speed and large kit box. When I used the sander it preformed beautifully.
One note though, when I purchased new belts by porter cable, they didn't track well and would tear up on me. The dewalt belts I then purchased worked flawlessly ( later in comparing the belts the PC belts have a thinner backing then the dewalt which leaves me to believe the paper on the pc belts stretch easier and causes the tracking to go off and tear the belts.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Tried 3 of Them Before I gave Up!
I would strongly recommend no one buy this tool! The first one I got wouldn't track at all so back it went. The second one tracked much better, but the rear berings started sounding like a washing machine with rocks in it...back it went. The third and final one tracked so so, but it ended up not spinning (belt would not move) when you pressed the trigger. Back it went and I will now try the Porter Cable 360 VS or 362 VS.
After this experience I doubt I will try any of their other tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice balance and feel.
I bought this sander 5 months ago so I have put it through various sanding jobs from finish sanding to surfacing material off with 40 grit. First off, changing the belt is a snap. Pull up on a trigger and it releases nicely. The balance is great and allows a gouge free surface. (all belt sanders will go gouge crazy if you let them) The cord exits off the top of the machine and over your shoulder for a "snag free sanding experience". I allways had gouges from my last sander when the cord would pull back on the unit and cause a wheelie across the work! Only had dust blowing in my face once, and that was because the dust bag was full to the brim. Emptied the bag and problem was solved. Other than that the amount of dust depends on what you are sanding and the grit of the paper. Belt sanding is dusty work no matter what. Noise is not nearly as loud as most sanders I have heard either. The three wheel design really gets the center of gravity low so it handles great! I bought the kit version that comes with the blow moulded case that has plenty of room for extra belts and misc. hardware you want to store. Overall rating.......solid tool!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Eat my dust!
If you like raceing then the term eat my dust ought to ring a bell,However the dust I'm talking about has a tendency to leave a bad taste in your mouth.I consider myself someone who appreciates the feel of a well engineered powertool in my hand and at a first glance the Dewalt beltsander looks to be just that.It is a solid looking and feeling piece of garage furniture, however the dust was unbearable. The one I bought may have just unfortuanately been a defective unit as we all know this sometimes happens but if not then in my opinion the mechanism that switches the unit over to bagging dust is totally useless.A woodworker is aware of the inherit problems with dust while sanding but to be sprayed in the face by a dusty stream cannot be overlooked. The mechanism I mentioned allows the operator to shut off the dust collector If he wants to sand without the dust collector,my question is was this in the original design or was it later incorporated to keep dust out of your face.Defect or bad engineering I don't really know but just from my experience and from the looks of the overcomplicated dust collection system that does'nt work forces me to take a look at the bosch 1274 or porter cable 360.If anyone has success with this one please review as I must move on. ... Compared to this sleek number, the first belt sander we ever used (a long, long time ago) was like a lawn tractor with sandpaper and a handle. This baby's a world away from that. DeWalt's solved a couple of common belt sander woes with this design, first with a clever three-wheel design that puts the motor right between the rollers, not behind, for superb balance. That's enhanced, too, because the placement ensures the lowest center of gravity. DeWalt has machined the platen for dead-on flatness, and they're the only ones we know of who do this. The variable speed dial is conveniently right on the back of the handle, letting you choose just the right speed for the material. If you've used as many belt sanders as we have, you're scoffing at the idea of a dust-collection system that really works, but leave it to DeWalt to figure this out. The dust-collection unit removes, too, in case you don't want to use it, and a shut-off keeps the waste from spewing at you. Rubber grips reduce vibration, and the front handle can be attached either on top or at the very front of the tool. Bravo.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My first and only sander I will ever need.
I bought this sander at the local store and bought some porter cable sanding belts along with it. I got home and put one of the belts on, without looking at the direction. About 5 minutes later the belt started sreading apart. Not knowing what just happened, i threw another belt on there. This time, looking only at the installing a new belt part of the directions. Make a long story short, I went through about 4 belts doing this before my friend showed be that you had to track the belt. I tracked it with a new belt but the belt would not stay on the rollers. Extremely angered, I went to the store and bought some 3M belts, cost about as much as the porter cable ones, and brought them home to try out. I put the first belt on there, and tracked it. This time it stayed on. In fact, that same belt is still on my sander, but I need to replace it. I've used it so much that the paper is becoming smooth.

Moral of the story: Never give up, and never buy porter cable sand balts, they are pieces of ****.

The dust collection works as well as they advertise and I have yet to have a problem with it since the new belts. I recommend this to anyone looking to buy a sander. I haven't tried any other sander, but from the experience I am getting from this one, I'd buy another dewalt if this one ever breaks.

5-0 out of 5 stars this pig OWNED my end grain chop block
This thing did so well that I am motivated to give a review.

My plight: I made an end grain cutting board (chop block) 15x24 to be put in cabinets that i built. I used all scrap hardwood from a lumber yard for free, so that was nice. In anycase, I glued hundreds of pieces of wood i chopped into pieces into strips and glued those together. In anycase, the top and bottom were random terrain up to 1/4". I brought it to a lumber yard to see if they could plane it down--which they said 'no way'--not endgrain. They said they could send it through their sander, which would take hours and cost me well over 150$. Pfft.

Enter the dewalt. After that I invested in this pig (i use pig endearingly) the walls came crumbling down.

I got this with 12 belts thinking the hardwood would take its toll--but heck no. ONE 50 grit belt took care of the entire monster. I couldn't believe it. Its also a tank, and look at that back wheel! i'm thinking of putting on rims and maybe a sound system. awww yah!

Anyway, as my first belt sander--it is extremely powerful, built like a tank, and eats through hardwood like I do this cheesecake.
