5-0 out of 5 stars No need for cords, unless you want them....
I have the entire 24V kit, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like the AC/DC converter feature, so that when the uncommon dead battery situation happens, you're not left without power. DeWalt: How about a 24V jig saw, plate jointer, miter saw and handheld planer? I'll buy them whenever they come out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a burning torch
I cut a 3.5" solid hardened steel blower shaft in half with this saw with one blade, faster than if I hauled a oxy/act rig up to the roof, or ran around trying to tap off power somewhere for a corded saw. This saw never stalled once and still had plenty of power left in it. This is one heck of a time and energy saver for me. Believe it from me, I'm a Commercial Air Conditioning Repairman.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I know so-far about this new saw
Having just bought the older 24v Dewalt recip saw, I was curious to see whether I should return and upgrade for the new model. I haven't tried this new saw yet, but here's what I know.

Firstly, Dewalt assured me that the saw itself has changed very little from the old model. That being said, this saw is a winner! This thing has a durable look & feel, torque, stroke, etc. that put the 18 v line to shame. It cuts fast and accurately. Though heavier than most cordelss models, it is very well balanced when it matters most... cutting.

The batteries and charger are the main updates.
1. The new kit comes with two batts... the old kit had one.
2. The new batteries are ~2.4 amp hrs, vs. 1.7 with the old (longer run-time).
3. The fans supposedly extend the life-cycle of the saw.

This being said, if I was just shopping for a Dewalt recip, I would buy the new kit. This is especially true if I didn't have additional 24v Dewalt tools or additional batteries. Two batteries are definately better than one. If, however, you already have some 24v tools... the reconditioned kit might be a good value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a close look
I've owned the 18 volt Dewalt circular saw for 5 years now. It's been a workhorse and seems to have plenty of life left in it. Cordless convenience, no need for AC nearby, etc., etc. - it's addicting if you build much at all. But the 24 volt saw is a huge step up. I got a chance to play with one at a manufacturor's demo show. The 24 volt model is a huge improvement over the 18 volt. This baby goes through dimensional lumber with ease. Blade pinch doesn't bother it nearly as much as it does the 18 volt model. The 6 extra volts is probably part of the advantage, but I bet the extra cutting teeth matter even more. This is an expensive tool, so if you're not going to use it fairly often, say once or twice a month, you might want to stick with an AC saw. Batteries for these tools seem to survive better with regular use. ... Read more

The micro-adjustment sets this guide apart from others in its price range. It’s easy to adjust with a turn, and it’s marked clearly in white, so it’s easy to read. Setup is a breeze, and we got great results. Our favorite feature is the dust collection port, which, when hooked up to a standard shop vac, really kept the sightline clear of chips and curls. Construction is sturdy. If you don’t have an edge guide in your shop, this one’s definitely worth considering. Its virtues: easy setup, nice fine-tuning mechanism, accuracy and clean chip removal. A good bet for the home woodworker as well as the professional.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
I purhcased this a few weeks ago from Amazon. I played around on scrap while getting the hang of it. It is easy to setup and use. I used it making some fluted trim and the vac port worked ok when working near the edge but hooking the shop vac directly to the Dewalt plunge router worked better. All in all well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of DeWalt universal edge guide
I received the edge guide a few days ago and used it to complete the mortising for the hanging brackets of my daughter's bed that I recently completed. I felt that the setup was a snap and it is easy to use. Prior to using the guide I made a few practice cuts so that I could get a feel for the adjustment and accuracy of the edge guide. Given how inexpensive this edge guide is, I believe it works great and have no complaints.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad points
I don't like this edge guide because
1.) it's so flimsy. The metal fence seems to be made of cheap metal.. it's almost like plastic.

2.) Also, adjustment is a bit awkward because you have to shim the fence up and down and side to side to move it. VERY TIME CONSUMING

3.) and it's easy to loose the spring-loaded adjustment screw if you loosen it too much

4.) MOST ANNOYING: if the router bit is not flush against the fence, you will CONTINUALLY generate strips of wood that actually jam inside the fence and elsewhere.

CONCLUSION - better get an edge guide from someone else. This one is cheap

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addon
This works very well. Very easy to setup and adjust, the micro adjust feature is great for dialing in exactly what is needed. The dust port works well when working on edges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
This guide works great with my Dewalt 625 router. I especially like the micro adjustment feature. Recommend this to anyone with a Dewalt router. Five stars and two thumbs up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Throw away your old charger!
I purchased this charger at the same time I bought my 14.4 cordless drill (Firestorm). This charger fully charges your Dewalt or Firestorm batteries in less than an hour (depending on how low they are when placed in the charger). My two batteries are still going strong after more than three years of frequent home use (the tune-up mode definitely helps).

Never use the 6 hr battery killer that comes with your cordless tools. This charger is definitely worth the money, considering I would have spent at least twice as much on new batteries.

4-0 out of 5 stars It tunes them up
Replaced my old charger with this one. Made a big difference with my older batteries that would not take much of a charge. Gave some new life to them. If you are a user of cordless tools, you know that batteries are the big maintenance expense. While my figures are not scientifically valid, my best guess is that this charger will extend the life of the batteries at least 20 percent

5-0 out of 5 stars "Tune-Up" Makes this the Better Choice
I traded up to this charger after one of my old ones quit. The "tune-up" mode really does make a difference. I tried a side by side test with my remaining old non-tune-up charger. I charged two depleted 12v batteries for 10 hours, using the "tune-up" mode on this charger. I then ran them in the same drill, and there was a noticable increase in rpm and torque with the "tuned-up" battery. The "tune-up" mode does take 8 hours, but it is only necessary every 8-10 charges. As DeWalt explains, the cells in the battery are wired in series and the "tune-up" charges the downline cells completely, where fast charging only fills the first few cells. All cordless batteries are a series of 1.5v batteries enclosed in a case. To get a full charge, all the individual batteries need to fill completely.

If you have older batteries, this charger will give them new life. It is a worthwhile upgrade even for new batteries, as it will give them better performance and perhaps, extend their life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW618 a great all around router at a good price
It doesn't matter if this one is your first or tenth router. You're going to be in for a treat. Smooth, quiet, powerful and accurate. This one does what you bought it to do. Not a bunch of bells and whistles just a complete well-made working tool that won't bust your budget.** The only negative preventing a full five star review is the switch location but you will adapt to it quickly. DEWALT DOES IT AGAIN!

1-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt DW618 Router goes up in smoke.
The Dewalt DW618 Router that I purchased for my home workshop did not hold up. I used it on two projects for less than 5 hours. The motor started smoking after running it in its slowest variable speed for about 30 minutes. After shutting it down to let it cool, when it was restarted, it smoked and seized up. While it appeared to have plenty of power for the panel cutting that it was doing, the motor got extremely hot when running at its slowest speed.

4-0 out of 5 stars It looks and sounds good
The handles fit good for people with small hands and it has lots of flexibility from plunge to fixed to d-handle. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good - within its breed
This is the third finishing sander I've owned (I got it free when I bought my compound miter saw) and of the three its the best in terms of sanding quality and noise. However, I'd go with a random orbit sander to get better quality.

My biggest complaint is that the dust attachment (DW4111) comes separately (and is not carried by very many suppliers, including Amazon). The dust bag that comes with their random orbit sander pulls apart and fits a standard 2 1/2 inch dust hose. Why couldn't they do that with this one?

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
Just started using this sander and it works pretty well. The switch that everyone complains about is not a big problem once you realize that it is not a push button under the small rubber cover, but a little toggle switch. DELIBERATELY depressing the right side of the rubber cover always turned the sander on, and depressing the left side always turned it off. No problems with the sander turning itself on or off.

The dust collection bag, on the other hand, didn't collect much dust as some people claim, though it never fell off either, as others claim.

The sander was very comfortable to use and quickly gave a very smooth finish. This is what you are looking for in a palm sander, right?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool
I've had this sander for years and put it through more abuse than I'd like to admit and it is still going strong. It has been dropped, used for several hours non stop, and worked nearly to death. It seems to take abuse and ask for more. The brushes probably need to be replaced and the bearings might be on their last legs but the machine still works without a problem. The dust bag now falls off and the cord is showing signs of cracking, but this is hardly a complaint as years of hard use will cause this in any tool. DeWalt is an excellent brand and this sander is no exception. I can only say good things about this tool and recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice sanding - no dust collection
I got this free with the 10" Miter saw. Agree with other reviewers that if you are only getting one sander get the orbital, but this is a very nice finishing sander. I had a Makita - but my sister borrowed and lost it somehow. This Dewalt sands as well as the Makita. It also collects dust about as well as the Makita - the catch being the Makita didn't even have a dust bag. I have had no problem with it falling off - it has a little catch that holds it securely, but there does not seem to be any air flow into the bag at all. (And yes - I do use the provided plate to punch holes in the paper!) I suspect something internal is out of place - but haven't bothered to call Dewalt yet. Hey - 10 years ago hardly any of these guys even had dust collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your $$$$
Poor design. The dust bag is a joke, as it seems to be with all of DeWalt's tools. The sand paper plate for stick on paper is rediculous. Save your $$$$ and your time and purchase an orbital sander. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The DeWalt DW621K is the best plunge router in its class. So saythe editors of two leading woodworking magazines, PopularWoodworking and American Woodworker. And why not? It's thefirst professional-grade plunge router with built-in dust collection. Itruns quietly but efficiently on a powerful 9 amp, 2-horsepower motor. Its plunging action is smooth. It maintains variable speeds of 8,000 to24,000 rpm. Its controls are easy to work. It's mountable. It has asafety lock on its on/off switch for added protection. And the list goeson. Now, whether such features qualify the DW621K as the best is amatter of debate, but one thing is certain: this workhorse of a routeris going to carry its weight in virtually any shop or garage. --CarlThress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Plunge Router!
Absolutely a great all purpose plunge router kit! As stated in other reviews this is not the best choice if you are focusing on primary use in a router table because of the on/off switch location. But, everything else is great! I'm very happy with the quality of construction and performance given me by this outer. This unit is definitely one of the best routers in its class. It has all the features one could possibly want. I recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking the plunge, the DeWalt 621.
Let me start by saying I don't believe a "perfect tool" exists, but the DeWalt 621 is close.

I admit, I'm not a spontaneous person when it comes to buying larger ticket item tools. This was no exception approx 18 months ago. I insist on good research. I tried to consider every possible use, quality, ergonomics, company reputation and overall long term investment along with price. First stop was here at Amazon.com, next Workbench Magazine (March/April 2001 issue, page 44.), followed by hands on inspection at local shops including Home Depot, Sears, Rockler and Tool Mart.

Out of a half dozen choices it came down to the DeWalt 621 or Porter Cable 7529. I did not like the electronics issues that plagued the P.C. (Porter Cable), and the fine depth adjustment rod is difficult to turn due to its very close proximity to the router body. Overall quality, ease of use and power were the priorities for my choice and then price. I would have gladly paid ...more for a mid-size router, if I felt it was truly better. I've heard from local woodworking shops that P.C. has addressed the electronics problems with the 7529 but with the higher cost (and weight) and lower usable power, the 621 was still the better choice. I decided to buy mine at Amazon.com as I did not have to pay shipping/handling or tax and I was assured of quick delivery. The base price here was competitive with other websites and stores and I received the edge guide attachment free.

When I received shipment the first thing that went through my mind was "Oh no, what happened!?" The outer shipping box had a huge 4" diameter hole in the right lower corner. Fortunately the router was encased in it's own box toward the rear of the shipping one. I immediately unpackaged and plugged it in. It's soft start electronics smoothly and quickly brought the router up to speed. The only noise heard was the soft whoosh of air from the motor's fan. It was music to my ears. Wheeew was the sound we both made!

I am a woodworder first and plastic/metal fabricator second. I wanted to really put this machine to test under a significant load. I am in the process of fabricating a 4" mini-table saw with a solid aluminum table top and needed to route two 1/8" deep by 1/2" wide miter grooves. Now obviously this is not likely to be recommended by DeWalt, but as I said, I wanted to test this machine under heavy load. A 1/2" shank ,1/2" straight carbide bit was fitted and the work began. The 621 sliced through the top without a whimper, slowing of the motor or excess vibration. The first wood project was a 1/4" roundover of redwood stock for some custom stackable shelves. The roundover was so effortless I thought I had missed the stock and had to turn off the machine and feel the edge with my finger to believe I had actually cut the surface. I was pleasantly surprised, the edge was perfect. Next job. 1/2" dados (using undersized plywood straight bit) to create tight fitting shelves in a birch cabinet followed by 1/2" x 1" deep mortises for tenon joints on a seperate redwood stand. The power and precision of this machine is impressive and with the lighter weight makes it nimble in the hands unlike the P.C. tank. The rack-and-pinion depth adjustment worked superb as did the three position turret, although six stops would be better. With power locked on and plunge raised, the 621 barely moved on my tabletop, a testament to it's ball bearings and smoothness. The fat spindle lock button was easy to use and much appreciated by my fingertip (and knuckles for those unfortunate without this feature).

The 95% efficiency regarding this routers ability to clear dust and woodchips you may have read is absolutely true! The large steel plunge rod (actually a hollow pipe) on the left of the machine is a cleverly designed vacuum tube (In this case different is better. Good job DeWalt!!). Attached to my shop vac, the suction works so well I have even used it to clear some of the excess dust on the table produced from my other machines. I just lightly pass the router over the dust and chips instead of detaching the vacuum hose from the router or blowing it away using my lungs.

As I said earlier I don't believe in any perfect tool and this router does have a few quirks. The base is different from most routers. Having two parallel straight edges gives it a smaller total surface area but also allows for easier edge guiding. The power switch is unusual to use and more complicated than a simple lever but is designed for safety as is the P.C. 7529 and like the P.C. just takes some getting use to. The plunge lock is also different from the others but easy to use without having to remove any fingers from it's grip so as to activate a lever.

The Pro's:

**Impressive Macro/Micro plunge adjustments
**Truly functional vacuum system (It really [has power]!)
**Smooth electronic controlled startup/feedback with ample power
**Good spindle lock and collett design
**Good quality of fit/finish

The Con's:

**Unusual base design with smaller surface area
**Unusual power switch (Designed for safety, but so has the P.C. 7529)

Summary: Maybe I like the 621 based on its ample merits or maybe because it's yellow color reminds me of my Tonka truck as a boy? It's definitely a very good tool. Or is it just an adult toy? Hmmm....

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad but!
I found this router worked well. However the Hitichi M12v 3-1/4hp. Super duty Electronic varriable speed 1/2" plung. A much better value. With alot more accessories and power for thoes large router bits. You compair I am sure you will agree. By the way I really like DEWALT tools,I have alot of them But some times there not the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great router!
I looked high and low to get the right power out of a router that wasn't too heavy. Considering it's a plunge router with 2 HP, I think this router feels perfect during use. The dust chute is very effective when used with a vacuum. The universal template attachment for the baseplate is very handy too for dovetailing and such. After shopping for nearly four months for the right tool, I would enthusiastically recommend this router for virtually any job you could throw at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good router that keeps getting better
I recently purchased the DW621 to replace a two year old DW621 that was stolen. I use the DW621 as a hand-held router

Lo and behold, the new router is different. The plunge springs are softer making it easier to control during plunge cuts.

The switch has been redesigned with a more positive lock. With the older router, it was too easy to bump the switch off.

The plastic chip guard has been redesigned and is much more effective.

The bushing holder is easier to install and fits better.

Both routers have variable speed and soft start. The balance point of the router is to the left of the bit making it less 'tippy'. The motor is quiet and smooth. The power is deceptive.

I replaced the stolen DW621 with a new DW621 because out of all the tools in my shop, the Dewalt feels the best in my hands. ... Read more

For one of the lightest models on the market, the DeWalt full round head framing nailer sure packs some power. At just 7.6 pounds (thanks to its magnesium housing and magazine), the 51845 still delivers up to 900 inch/pounds of driving power. Its conservative 12-3/4-inch height lets you toe-nail where space is at a premium. DeWalt’s unique design buries nails even in engineered lumber with minimal recoil, putting less stress on your body. Ergonomics get another boost from the comfortable, curved trigger and shock-absorbing grip. Resetting your depth of drive is blessedly tool-free, fast and easy, and we also like the quick-release jam-clearing feature for its savings of time and frustration. Safety is a priority, with a dry-fire lockout that keeps the tool from firing when the magazine is empty, a trigger lock-off to disable the tool when not in use, and a steel exhaust deflector that protests the tool if it’s dropped. DeWalt even tucked a pair of safety glasses in the box. A reversible rafter hook will let you hang the tool from a rafter or keep it handy on your toolbelt.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

I bought two of these nailers, the first one leaked air out of the trigger the first time I attached an air hose. I returned it and bought another. It worked great for about a week. Then it started to jam every other nail load. It started to leak air. I finally got so mad I threw it off the roof in to a dumpster. Piece of garbage, buy a Senco, or hitachi. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE drill to buy
I can't recommend this drill enough. I just spend the Labor Day vacation (?) assembling a wooden playset for my daughters. Discovered my old Skil 18v wasn't what she used to be. Went to the local H Depot and waffled between the B&D and the DeWalt - let DeWalt's reputation tip the scales and I couldn't be happier. The 1 hour battery charger is perfect. The drill had no problem w/ 3" and 4" wood screws through pressure treated wood - or driving a 5/16" hole through a 4X6. It's light, perfectly balanced and w/ the 2 batteries and 1 hour charger I worked all day with no slow downs. You can tell this was built to be used. Despite the fact that B&D owns DeWalt - there are differences - DeWalt is all metal internal gears and more torque than the 14.4v Firestorm I was considering.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very useful, but did not last
We got a DeWalt 9.6 V (that looks just like this one) when we bought our house about seven years ago. We used it almost exclusively as a driver (using a corded high-speed drill for drilling), and it performed well for most tasks. And for most tasks, the relatively light weight seemed to be an advantage (until we found a bigger drill that was not much heavier). This drill did have its limitations. It did not have the power to drive 3" screws into pressure-treated pine on our deck efficiently, resulting in hands and arms that tired from maintaining pressure on the screw during the last few turns. For the deck, we ended up buying a 14.4 V Milwaukee, which was less than a pound heavier than this DeWalt. For the DeWalt, battery charging was adequately quick, but the battery use time was not particularly long. The batteries failed to hold a charge after about five years of use; we bought new batteries. We had to replace the charger once, too -- one of the metal contacts broke. Finally, after about six years of home repair use, this drill died. It started sputtering and wheezing when drilling upside-down, and then sputtered all the time -- no power. I could not take the drill apart to look for bad connections. Six years may seem like plenty of use, but it was used only on weekends at the most. Even when new, it did not seem nearly as solid and smooth-running as the Milwaukee we have now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drill for the price and money
I got this drill from the company I work for, as my 10yr gift. I have had it for 4yrs going on 5. The drill and one of it's batteries was left out in the rain 2 times. Each time my husband was able to revive the poor abused thing. Finally this year after 4 1/2 years with a lot of extended weekend use(sometimes 3 day and 4day week ends)one of the battery's no longer holds a charge.
We made 2 8' by 12' ground level decks with no problem. I usually predrill most items not because of lack of power, but because not predrilling causes most wood, press board, and fiber board to split and crack. We also built cabinets, book cases, work tables for our shop, work tables for my studio and uncountable other uses. I am buying another one. I just bought my husband the 12v version. I still love my drill and prefer it over the other one. I will still use my old one. One for predrilling and one for driving. I don't care too much for the quick change chucks we bought(one set from craftsman and one set from Ryobi, and a small set from Dewalt) They all have a wobble that I don't get from the drill chuck. I hope others will enjoy their drill as much as we have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for small jobs
Great for the DIY'er. Anything more than 9.6v becomes heavy and cantakerous for small tasks. This drill will struggle with driving screws into 4"x4" treated wood unless the holes are pre-drilled. For big jobs, keep a corded drill. How often do you really need a drill with that much balls?

4-0 out of 5 stars I don't usually give four stars!
Well, I actually like this tool:

It's a decent drill...PERIOD.

1.) the chuck is only 3/8ths but that's okay for a small drill

2.) the battery is okay for a small drill. it's great that they give you 2 of them

3.) it comes with a useful and durable case

4.) the power is decent for it's size and battery

5.) I believe the MAKITA has better BALANCE but the Makita feels and sounds like it's HOLLOW inside. This Dewalt feels a lot more durable

Conclusion

Although I know this tool is not perfect, I know that it's a decent drill.

I wish Dewalt made more decent and simple tools ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

DeWalt's 5-inch random-orbit sander is a great tool for professional woodworkers and painters, as well as homeowners looking for a reliable sander for do-it-yourself projects. It has a 2 amp motor that provides up to 12,000 orbits per minute, with a 3/32 orbit diameter. Its controlled finishing system maintains consistent control over the pad speed, minimizing gouging at startup, and the variable-speed motor ramps smoothly between speed levels when adjusted on the fly. While it has less vibration than many sanders we've tried--thanks in part to DeWalt's dual-plane counterbalanced fan--we found that gripping the tool from the side rather than from the top seemed to be easier on the hands. The top grip could get tiresome in extended-use situations. We liked the dust canister configuration on this tool, which uses a simple and effective twist-lock mechanism to help prevent air pressure from popping the canister off the tool. The sealed switch is also a good idea that will help prevent dust contamination problems. The kit comes with the sander, a dust collector, a vacuum attachment, and the case. --Brian Trinen ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Bad switch, dust port.
I own several Dewalt tools, and am overall happy with the quality - however, this sander has two notable defects: the on/off switch (as others have noted) seems to be of bad quality, mine seems to get caught in between on and off -- the switch seems to be designed to be operated with one hand, but the defect makes this difficult. Also, when attaching my Fein shop vac (*highly* recommended) to the little dust port, it quickly wiggles loose -- and the vac does stay attached to other Dewalt tools properly. On the bright side, this sander *does* sand well, leaving a nice finish in a very short amount of time.

PS: (I make it a little practice to note where each Dewalt tool I buy is manufactured, anything that can be tracted back to Elu, or made in Italy is of high quality, hint, look where the owner's manual was printed)-

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems
I have had this sander for a year and have experienced no problems. The variable speed works teriffic. The dust collector picks up about 70-80% of the dust. I've never had any trouble with the sander leaving swirl marks. As with any sander it takes a short period of time to get the feel of it. However, once you do material removal is a breeze! The switch is a little tricky, but certainly nothing to cry about. Overall, it's been a great sander.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sander
This sander is an absolute pleasure to use. It has very little vibration and really floats over the work piece. I haven't used it for any serious material removal (i.e. paint, stain, heavily marred surfaces, ect.) so I can only comment on its use in finishing cut boards and sanding in between coats of stain/sealer.

The paper for this sander is readily available and relatively inexpensive so get a wide assortment and happy sanding!

4-0 out of 5 stars The switch is the Achilles' heel
Other reviewers are correct, this is a terrific little sander with one problem, the switch is tricky to operate. The switch is too small and the rubber dust cover over it makes the action of the switch awkward at best. Getting it to turn on or off can be a two or three attempt task, this should be a no-brainer for DeWalt to fix in future production. Other than that the quality of the finish it produces is excellent, noise level acceptable and the dust collection is a major improvement over the old 1/4 sheet sanders. I typically use this sander immediately after my 1/2 sheet Porter Cable (with no dust collection) and the DeWalt sucks up all the dust left behind by the PC. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad switch, bad company
This tool's switch went out too soon for an $80 sander. Other dewalt tools have broke prematurely for my satisfaction.
I was persuaded into switching all new purchases to dewalt after much high pressure sales garb...I will be going back to tried and true PC and Makita. ... Read more
