5-0 out of 5 stars It's a BEAST (from one amateur's point of view)
I finally had to give my brother his saw back today.<>I'm going to miss the big beast.

Okay, I'm no pro -- just a very enthusiastic amateur. On the other hand, since I have no idea what the correct way to use the saw is, I may well put it through a harder, albeit shorter and less frequent, workout than the pros do.

A couple comments:

If you need to pull the blade out of the cut before you've gone all the way through the material, be sure to let go of the trigger first, or this puppy will twist your blade into a fair imitation of a question mark.

As far as changing blades goes, I can't imagine anything easier.Just flip up the little lever, give the saw a tiny shake, and the old blade falls harmlessly to the ground.Shove in a new blade, push the lever back down, and it's off to the races again.I'm not really sure why anyone would *want* to touch the old blade -- gloves or no -- before it cools off, but I agree it would definitely be a hazard.

Sure, it vibrates like a Harley with a bad timing sprocket, but for this amateur that's part of the appeal -- i.e., when I fire that thing up I just KNOW I'm doing some really MANLY stuff!{g}

Great saw.Wish I had one of my very own.

4-0 out of 5 stars raw powah!!
This baby has the goods under the hood! It also has some junk in the trunk, as in: it's quite heavy. Even still, it makes my hands and arms numb with extended use. I have not used this saw for days in and days out as some have(I have to have arm transplants if I did!) so I can't say how it holds up in those type of conditions, but I've demoed a kitchen, cut off car exhausts and turned an ancient picnic bench into kindling, all I can say is...the thing cuts! Just keep the fresh blades coming as the big demo blades I use dull quickly.
Unlike some others, I haven't had any problems with the quick release blade lever, even with gloves. Mine still works as slick as the day I got it.
The variable speed is nice, though more often than not, I have it cranked to the top.
I find the trigger to be difficult to hold down for long cuts due to the vibration. If the trigger guard just below the trigger were shorter I think that would solve the problem.
The one thing that really blows about this tool is the shoe adjustment! It only goes in and out maybe two inches at the most and that's about half as long as would be useful. To top that off, when trying to move it out, the shoe invariably come out of the end of the tool. While I'm sure it's nice to have it be removable, it would be a lot nicer if you had to perform a different operation to take it off.

To sum up: Seemingly burly build quality, tons of power alas with tons of vibration, poor shoe design.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not DeWalt's Best Tool
I like DeWalt's stuff, really, but this tool has too many problems with its new features.I don't like how the shoe falls out so easily from the unit; the first time I'm on the peak of a roof and that happens, I'm going to be really upset! The quick release doesn't have a positive feel even when the unit is new.Making sure it's latched when wearing gloves is iffy at best. Finally, and the worst bugaboo, is that the saw doesn't even move when the speed control is at 1 or below. At 1.5 it sorta kinda moves. So a good chunk of that adjustment space is useless.

I think I'll return this one and buy a Sawzall.

2-0 out of 5 stars Paved with Good Intentions
A top notch saw in most cases, having more power and a smoother action than most, of not all of its competitors. The area where it falls flat is, ironically, is in its main selling point--its quick release mechanism.

The quick release tab can't be easily accessed while wearing work gloves (major flaw given that the blade is often too hot to handle without gloves) and the mechanism itself (where the blade attaches to the saw)is bristling with engineered and ineffecient bric-a-brac. When cutting through a roof, for example, tar and other materials will be caught by the mechanism and jammed into the saw until the quick release no longer works and must be cleaned out.

For an example of how a saw should be built, go to the Milwaukee 6521-21. The quick release on this saw is a model of effeciency. Blades can be changed easily while wearing work gloves and the saw won't get gunked up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Found a PROBLEM!!
When the saw gets caught in material a few times it starts haveing problems with the guts!! I've had to take mine apart half a dozen times now and put the parts back in the slots they belong in!! Mostly where the fork fits into a small hole! Hope they fix this problem before I decide to buy another. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER HIGH QUALITY ACCESSORY FROM DEWALT
Found this DeWalt D6100 tool bag a great accessory for my D51823 clipped head nailer. The nailer fits inside the bag, slightly at an angle, but with additional space for clips of nails and accessories I need in conjunction with its use. This high quality tool bag is definetly rugged enough and constructed in such a manner that it will withstand the weight of the items I need to do the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tool Bag
If you've been thinking about getting this bag, but hesitate because of price. GET IT! You will not be disappointed.

At first I thought it might be too small for my needs. But the size is just right. I've been able to fit a cordless drill, reciprocating saw, jig saw, two batteries, charger, hammer, 12x12 box of bits and plenty more. If they had made it any bigger you'd probably stick more in it and not be able to carry it around.

I would consider it more a "toolbox bag" than a "tool bag". It is very firm and stands on its own without any tools in it. To say it is "Heavy Duty" may be an understatement. The quality is top-notch. Tool bags are wimpy. This is definitely not wimpy.

Well worth the money, IMHO.

Large holes and monster screws are no problem for DeWalt's DC984 XRP. We could feel the power with the first squeeze of the trigger. The torque is unbeatable, but the power's not all: In drill mode, a cool three-speed transmission gets you up to a whopping 1,800 rpm. The ½-inch chuck is smooth and easy, and its carbide jaws really grab the bit, a great feature especially in a hammerdrill. Drilling into masonry is easy as pie, with 30,600 blows per minute in your hand. DeWalt's XRP line includes extended run-time batteries, and less recharging means more time at the task. Even the ergonomics are good on this model, with a great, comfortable grip, a nice even balance and a reasonable weight, especially if you're working overhead. We don't know how much use we'd get out of the on-board bit tip holders, but we might be the exception. Great sturdy case, too.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Uninspiring
I had one of these for about a year. I own lots of Dewalt cordless tools, and have been generally very happy with them. I use the heck out of my standard 12v drill, so this right-angle drill seemed like a natural addition. I found the body to be pretty large and clumsy, which kind of defeats the idea of getting something for working in confined spots. Because it was hard to hold and manipulate, I had a hard time driving screws without slipping the bit out of the head frequently. After a while, I just gave up on using this and found other ways to get the work done. (If you're interested, I have used a Milwaukee corded "close quarters" drill and really like it.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy
I got this on closeout at a local home center for a steal. Didn't think I would really use it much but I now find myself using it all the time. Great for small or awkward spaces. Good battery life. Fits well and balances nicely in the hand. It's pricey but very handy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW758
Having recently purchased the DeWalt DW758 bench grinder for use in my shop, I can say that it is definitely a good value. The ¾ HP capacitor-start motor comes up to speed quickly, runs smoothly with steady speed and ample power for most any grinding need. Overall, it is a very good heavy-duty general-use grinder.

The stamped steel wheel guards are not as sturdy or easy to remove as the cast iron guards on other manufactures more expensive models. The DW758's guards have screws on the top and bottom, instead of on the side, which can be difficult to remove when the grinder is mounted to a bench. A small right-angle "Yankee" ratcheting screwdriver makes bottom screw removal much easier and more practical than unbolting the grinder from the bench to change wheels. This probably won't even be an issue for most users, given the relative longevity and infrequent changing of grinding wheels with normal use.
The DW758's shaft bearings are sealed and require disassembly for lubrication. DeWalt recommends having the bearings serviced by one of their Authorized Service Centers every six weeks to six months, depending on the severity of use. This could add up to quite a substantial cost over the life of the tool, given the minimum "bench fee" most Service Centers have, as well as through lost productivity to businesses from having a tool or piece of equipment out of service. For a shop tool with a recommended maintenance schedule this frequent, it would probably be better if the unit had capped grease fittings and plugs to allow relubrication as required in the shop, without having to remove it and take it to a service center.
The grinders tools rests work well, are sturdy, and can be tilted with the use of the supplied allen wrench to change the grinding angle, which is a very useful feature. The unit comes supplied with 60 course-grit and 36 medium-grit wheels installed and can accept other 8" wheels with a face width of up to 1" and wire wheels with a face width of up to 1-1/4" as well as cotton buffing wheels.
I have no problem at all recommending the DW758. The unit seems very well made, especially considering the modest price tag, and will no doubt last through many years of hard use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly built grinder
...this is a beautiful piece of work. It is well built and remarkably well balanced such that I really don't need to bolt it down. Its bearings are perfect as it seems it takes forever to stop once the power is turned off. The wheels are well matched for general use and fairly easy to change once the small screws holding the wheel covers are removed. The tool rests are sturdy and steady and easy to adjust and they stay put. I use it all the time with great results in my home shop. My only suggestion is that a work light should be included and it would be handy if there were a 2nd speed. Overall a real bargain for this 8" grinder. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Ideal for home auto work, DeWalt's 1/2-inch electric impact wrench is a burly, no-nonsense tool that delivers 240 foot-pounds of torque and 2,700 impacts per minute. The tool is well balanced, weighs 7 pounds, and is 10-7/8 inches long. The trigger, a two-finger toggle switch, lets you comfortably rotate between forward and reverse--a feature especially handy for rocking loose stuck nuts. The impact wrench also features a detent-pin retainer that lets you lock a socket on the anvil (to remove, you depress the detent using a small pointed object, then simply pull the socket off). The motor's brushes are easily accessible and replaceable, too, and thanks to DeWalt's advanced brush system, which automatically stops the tool just before the brushes wear out, you'll know when it's time to replace them. All in all, an impact wrench isn't a particularly complex tool: you want one that's solidly built and packs plenty of power. DeWalt's DW290 is exactly that. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not really good enough to remove lug nuts off a car
Am I the only one that can't remove lug nuts off my car. The socket just sits there and doesn't move. Could it be that I just have a bad one?

4-0 out of 5 stars must use impact sockets with this
you really must use impact sockets (black steel) with this (and all) impact wrenches.....

regular chrome sockets will not work as they have too much "play" in them....;..

4-0 out of 5 stars A wise investment for those without an air compressor
The DW290 has saved me hours, scratch that, weeks of labor many scrapes and bruises, and tons of money on repairing my two cars. It turns even partially stripped nuts and bolts that haven't turned in 12 years.

Only rubber bushing shock mounted bolts refuse to budge with the DW290. The bushings absorb the impact so no torque to the hardware. More torque may help.

The documentation I received with the unit lacked content. No diagrams on torque versus time, how/when to maintain/repair, no parts manual. Impact wrench operation must be understood to perform to expectations. DeWalt.com promises to add Use and Care manuals to their website one of these days...

The DW290 has saved me: time, knuckle/arm injury and expense. It's given me lot's of confidence to take on almost any car repair. It's loud, works well, and DeWalt yellow so your neighbors know you are serious professional.

Advice: A complete set of Deep and Shallow, SAE and Metric, 1/2 inch impact sockets with extensions and swivels in a nice carrying case is the perfect accessory for the DW290. (I'd also recommend earplugs)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool!
Addressing the one (1) complaint that this torque wrench didn't perform well: You have to use impact sockets and keep extensions to a minimum to maximize the benefit of using an impact wrench. You can hold the socket with your bare hand with _most_ wrenches. Where they get their leverage is when everything is tight and the impact mechanism can hammer on the only thing that'll give: The nut.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for automotive work
I bought this tool to remove the bumper bolts on my GMC Jimmy. The DeWalt impact zipped them out with no problems. This impact also easily zipped out the crossmember bolts when I was installing a brush guard on my truck. This tool is also wonderful for changing tires. The lug nuts flew off like they were on fire. This is a great tool and I recommend it to anyone working on cars! ... Read more

Don't let the word "reconditioned" scare you off from purchasing this...the one I got looked and operated like it was brand new. The compressor is great and relatively quiet for what it's rated for and the size. This is probably one of the easier compressors to carry around to job sites. 5-0 out of 5 stars DW7353 Makes Chip Collecting Easy
Not having space for a dust collection system, the blower on the DW735 helped me decide on the DW735 planer. The planer works really well at evacuating the chips and chip collection is a necessity. I tried using a trash can that I had but some dust came out around the handles; the handles were molded up near the can opening keeping the hood from a tight fit.
I bought a 33 gallon Roughneck wheeled container at Lowe's that had a lip all around the edge and that solved the problem. I put plastic bags in the can and the hood over everything and get no escaped dust and easy emptying.
The instructions say to not let the hose lay over the side of the can. I put a "J" hook in the ceiling and use a rope loop to hold up the hose so it's adjustable and out of the way, simple and effective. This thing works just as it should - I'm very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW7353 Chip Collection Accessory for DW735
Wow! Am I glad I got this with my plainer. It collects almost all the chips and dust from the plainer. The drawstring top for the trashcan makes it very versitile. I have a very, very small shop so the ability to use a smaller trashcan adds to it's value. Using the plainer without it creates a huge mess. If you haven't used a plainer before and are forewarned on the amoung of sawdust you'll still be amazed. If you don't have a central system to hook your plainer up to, I highly recommend getting this. It will be worth every penny. I got is even though another rater talked about the hose inconviently located right above the outfeed table and it can get in the way, but I simply pull the hose up over the top of the machine and it's no problem. Again, if you don't have a central collection system...get this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Should have come with saw
How did I use the saw without these. (My wife knows!) Glad I bought them as they are very handy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Supports
I bought these with the saw, but they are to short to support much. I don't think they are worth the price. I think that a seperate outfeed roller would work better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep it up jack
These things are great. They are firm enough to support the work when ripping or cross cutting long stock. They do what they are supposed to do and are a must have if you own the dewalt 744.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for long boards.
It works.

(I cannot wax eloquently about something so basic and simple.)

The supports are easy to setup -- I spent 20 minutes to assemble everything. Of the 20, I spent 10 minutes fiddling with the alignment to get it exactly the way I wanted.

The only "minus" is that the support sags a little bit when fully extended. I could feel the sag while cross cutting a long board.

Still, even with the sag, the support makes it possible for me to cut long pieces. I was making many 4" pieces from 6' boards. The side support made the work quick and safe.

If you can park your saw against a workbench, you can use your workbench as your side/outfeed support (park the saw next to the bench at the correct height); but, if you work without a bench, or want your supports attached to the saw, this side/outfeed support kit is a must-buy.

BTW -- The setup instructions mentioned that the saw's mount points lacked screw threads, and that you had to use the included self-tapping screws with a drop of motor-oil. On my saw, however, the threads were already there. After you order the supports, you might want to check your table saw and see if there are pre-threaded mounting holes. If you don't see threaded mounting holes, go find some machining/motor oil.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful if you are working alone
I have used this the dewalt portable table saw with this accessory and it really helps when cutting long pieces. The outfeed part is really helpful for me since I am usually working alone. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars burned up twice
I bought the dewalt 871 14" chop saw because I was told it would cut metal. It cuts thin walled stock, but it doesn't cut a 3" mechanical tubing with 1/2" wall or 3" solid stock like promised.I could barely put pressure on the blade to keep it cutting.I don't feel like replacing the motor again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the high price
I've had this for ~ a couple of years now. It's ok, and has decent power. It trips the ciruit breaker constantly when I try to cut through 1/4" square though, which gets annoying. It'll cut angle or thin stuff pretty quickly though.

But worst of all, is that weak miter clamp.First, it's hard to set it at the angle you want b/c you're never sure if you're exactly hitting the angle you want..But when you do finally set it, after you tighten the work down, the whole clamp will move, and now you're at a different angle.Cheap!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst power tool I have ever owned!
I bought this because I liked my brother's DW-874.Bad move. This thing is a piece of junk. The clamp is horrible, It comes loose, the screw striped out after 6 months. If you make 45 degree cuts the back of the clamp is so far back the blade can not cut all the way through the metal, to correct this you have to put an extra piece of material behind what you are cutting to space it out far enough to cut through. It vibrates no matter what you cut.I've used saws with less horse power ratings that have more power. It trips breakers all the time on circuits that don't trip when I use my 110v welder. If I had it to do over I would buy a hack saw!

1-0 out of 5 stars a SAD!!! peice of work!!
I'm a dock builder that uses chop sawsreguarly and I found this saw to be a JOKE!! It lug's down stalls out trips the breaker in the breaker box ( a 20 amp breaker using #10 wire at 15 feet long cord ) won't use all the blade like the old saws. WILL NOT cut a miter cut without angling off crooked it even cut the base of the saw itself, is how bad it angles off!! The saw acts like it has a mind of it's own. it works when it wants to. The only thing I have to say good about it is, the handle is more easier to grip being horisonatal. Other than that it would't make a good trot line anchor!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars This saw is [an inexpensive] imposter of the DW874 it replaced
I have been using the DW874 in our steel fabrication shop every day for the past three years with great satisfation.

We needed another saw for field work and went to buy another DW874 and was told that they were discontinued. The replacement was the DW871. We bought it and were instantly disappointed.

The DW871 is obviously [less expensive] to build saw. It has a plastic motor housing and a cheap vise. The threaded quick release also known as the anvil is [an inexpensive] cast iron piece while on the older saw it was a machined part.

After using it a few times the cast iron anvil would not engage the threaded rod to tighten the vise. The threaded rod was nicked and chewed up from the anvil not engaging properly. I had to get a new vise assembly.

Also it is neccessary to mark the material to be cut because the blade cannot be lowered to rest on the workpiece in order to measure and cut quickly.

The older DW874 does this quite nicely and because of this we can measure and cut about 10 times faster.

Overall, the new DW871 lasted only a few days before needing repair(and it is still difficult to use quickly), But my older DW874 has not given me any problems in three years!

Pass on this one. It is a real hunk of junk. ... Read more

This DeWalt saw looks, feels and performs unlike other portable band saws we've seen. Three smart design features make it stand out in the crowd. First, we like the rubber bumpers that, over the years, will save a fortune in repair costs of broken guards. Half an inch of rugged industrial rubber and a steel belt wrap around the tool, protecting it from the abuses of jobsite life. Next, because the motor is over the blade, the tool's balance is impeccable, and in concert with its light weight, it's a pleasure to use. Finally, we're impressed by the angled Sight Light, which illuminates your work surface even in difficult, dark places like an elevator shaft. DeWalt put a lot of thought into this saw's ergonomics, too, with the wide front handle that won't cramp even the biggest hands, and the comfortable soft grip on the back handle. The speed control dial is convenient and smooth, too. Power and comfort make this saw top-notch.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to the DW708
Excellent clamp. Sturdy and well built. With all the emphasis in the reviews on the "wobble" I really expected it to be looser than it is once seated. It moves just a little bit, maybe 1/8th of an inch if that, and like the reviews say once tightened down its rock solid. This clamp is bigger than I'd imagined and really seems well made. I don't feel like I got taken, the price is high but I'm happy with what I received for my money (No I don't work for DeWalt). Buy this clamp it's worth having.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
Typical DeWALT quality and nice design, clamps against the table as I prefer. Easy to handle. (...) Could use a little bit more manufacturing accuracy (expected from DW), wiggles in the slot until you clamp down the workpiece. I only use one (being right-handed) on the right side, also a control device to keep your hands away form the blade (if you're the type). You can easily adapt a suitable material between the round rubber foot and the workpiece, so you can clamp close to the blade on a short piece. I can see DW designing against a long rubber shoe instead, for liability reasons - the round foot will never cross the blade path. Recommended, yes. Required, depends how you work.
Why not 5? Well, 5 for me is perfection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice clamp, but a bit pricey
Very sturdy. Well engineered. The push button releases the clamp and it can be quickly adjusted. Releasing the button engages the clamp shaft, and you give it a twist to apply clamping pressure. Done. The clamp head has a rubber cover, so it not only prevents maring your work, but provides additional grip. Get two of these so you can clamp on both sides of the blade. They can be easily moved out of the way (swing it behind the fence, still attached to the saw) when not needed, or just as easily removed completely. I leave mine attached to the DW708.

This accessory is up to the level of quality I expect from DeWalt. Highly recommended.

For the price these should come in pairs, but keeping my fingers where they are is important so I spent the money to get them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have, but should be sold in pairs
For safety and accuracy of sawing, these are indespensible. For the price, though, they should come in pairs to allow the workpiece to be secured on both sides of the blade.

4-0 out of 5 stars good design on this expensive accessory
Pricey - true. But I was pleasantly surprised by the good design of this accessory. The clamp conveniently swings out of the way when not needed - no need to unmount it from the saw. I'm glad that I purchased two clamps, although one would probably suffice for most uses. The only reason for subtracting a star is because of the high price. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Compatibility with DW703
The good news is that these stops fit onto the DW703 very nicely. The bad news is that when set fully out, there is only 3 2/3 inches between the backstop and the crown stop. Not much room at all to work with, so I hope your crowns are small.

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could design and sell a product like this I'd be rich
Yes, they should be a bit longer to allow six inch crown. They should also have a quick release mechanism. but these are minor complaints.
Look closely at the picture. I can't understand how they can charge this price for an item that obviously can be made for 1/10 the price (look at the picture again). I still bought them because you really must have them if you do any anount of crown. The real disapointment is that for that much money you'd think they would at least be square. Mine are not (out of the box). When dewalt sat down and designed this thing there were only two basic requirements - it must attach to the side of the saw with a slot that allows adjustment and then turn square so as to be parrallel to the fence. It is totally unbelievable that they could fail at this. No name tools manufactured on a dirt floor in the south pacific would likely be more succesful in producing this product.
On the flip side I still use this product all the time and it is in fact very helpfull when working with crown.

4-0 out of 5 stars good idea
I have these on my DW708 and the really help. HOWEVER they arent long enough for really large crown and I would like them to incorperate a quick release device . This would prevent time consuming removal when switching to different materials .Beyond this they are very nice .

1-0 out of 5 stars Not all they seem to be
If you have the DW706 double compound saw you might be disappointed with these stops. They will NOT cut crown larger that 5 1/4" which is far less than the 6" crown that saw is capable of. There is a review that talks about this a little more on the DW706 page.

5-0 out of 5 stars These are worth their price in gold.
They fit correctly, secure well, and make the job of cutting crown molding a virtual breeze. No more messing with making 2 adjustments (bevel and miter) on your saw. Set these up once for the width of the crown molding that you're cutting, and you'll typically only have to make your miter adjustments, which is easy when your DeWalt has the positive stops for the crown molding cuts. In addition, due to the way they hold the crown molding, they eliminate the mistake of having the molding facing the wrong way when you're making your cuts. ... Read more
