Amazon.com Review

Prep for paint. Clear the driveway. Scrub the deck. Clean the gutters. Wash the car. If you have a lot of heavy-duty cleaning chores to tackle, the Generac 2.2 gpm pressure washer may be your answer. A fuel-efficient 5.0-horsepower Honda engine and high-pressure pump deliver 2,400 psi of pressure at 2.2 gpm. That's more than enough power to remove the toughest stains, mold, mildew, grease, salt, paint, and grime from all kinds of surfaces. Four quick-connect spray tips let you regulate the water flow and amount of pressure applied, while a chemical injection system dramatically increases cleaning effectiveness versus comparable models. Ten-inch pneumatic tires make this unit easy to maneuver around a work area, even over tough terrain, and a prostyle stainless-steel wand provides superior comfort and control. --Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SAVE TIME AND ENERGY
I TOOK THIS OUT OF THE BOX PUT A VERY FEW THINGS TOGETHER, ADDED OIL AND GAS, THAN I HAD A REAL HARD TIME TRYING TO START IT AS YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE WATER HOSE HOOKED UP AND TURNED ON TO PREVENT DAMAGE, THIS CAUSES BACK PRESSURE ON THE ENGINE, PULL AS I COULD I COULD NOT GET IT STARTED, I CALL GPPI AND WAS TOLD TO PRESS THE TRIGGER ON THE CLEANING WAND WHICH WILL RELEIVE THE WATER PRESSURE ON ENGINE WHICH I DID AND IT STARTED THE 1ST PULL WITH EASE AND HAS STARTED 1ST PULL EVERY TIME. THIS IS A GOOD ROUND THE HOUSE CLEANING MACHINE, EASY TO OPERATE AND DOES A GOOD JOB, THE CHEMICALS WERE EASY TO APPLY. REASONABLE PRICE FOR A HONDA ENGINE WITH GENERIC PUMP, GOOD BUY.

1-0 out of 5 stars UNSATISFIED CONSUMER
This unit performed great three to four light uses but soon after the motor started running poorly and failed with a broken camshaft and exaust lifter. The unit was aproximatly 14 mounths old. Turns out the cam and drive gear are made out of plastic and this is a common failure. I replaced failed parts and cranked the motor and the motor slung a rod. I Paided extra to get the Honda motor because the Home Depo sales guy said it would be more reliable.I'd have to say, along with the parts sales guy, that this is a poor representation of Honda.Do not buy any piece of equipment with the gc160 motor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blown Pump Head
Let say first that the pressure washer was easy to assemble, oil, and begin using. It is small enough to move around easily and has more than enough power.

And that leads to my problems with this unit. I used it one weekend with excellent results. The next weekend I had it up and running for an hour when the pump head blew off the unit while I was spraying. I found parts 25 yards away. I have a brother who works in the small engine field and I ask him about it and showed him the pump head. He asked if the unit had a Honda engine and when I said yes, he said there is the problem. Honda engines are not run for initial break in before they are mated with the pump. Once the engine is run a couple of hours, it develops higher RPMs and greater pressure. He has replaced more than a few pump heads, and even replaced more than one on the same pressure washer. He has also called the manufacturer and reported the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Eradicator
I bought this Generac Pressure Washer and used it to strip the old moldy fence that lines my property. The fence looks like the day it was installed. Once finshed most of the neighbors wanted to know where I rented the unit. I snickered and said It's may unit. Well now they all want to borrow it. Well I did loan it to one of the neighbors and he would not give it back for 3 months he must have done every inch of his property, looks greatheighbor, now can I have my unit back---Pause, can I use it for another week. I was feeling weak that day and let him continue to borrow it. Finally he says I have gotten more use out of this unit than you have (Me 2 1/2 hours) (Him3 Months) I thought I would have to sneak over in the middle of the night to get it back. He finaly says I'm keeping it and asked me to order another for myself and that he would pay me for the new unit. I have got to tell you, get one it will save you mega bucks in fence, cement, porch funature and many other house hold projects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Unhappy with Pressure Washer
Unlike the other reviews, my initial impressions of this pressure washer is quite disappointing. The setup was straightforward, until I attempted to mount the wand on the side of the unit. The engine, which is attached to the base with four bolts was mounted off center, towards the side the nozel rests. As such, the wand could not rest as shown in the diagrams since the engine's gas tank was in the way. Generac's customer service was friendly, but rather than simply mailing a new base, I was forwarded to a certified Service Center who agreed with my diagnosis of the problem, but Generac still denies it could be possible. I drilled new holes to fix the problem, but was amazed when I started the unit and it idled very rough. I contacted Generac who forwarded me to a Honda repair center, since Generac only does the integration of parts. They couldn't even tell me the model number of the Honda engine used on the unit. The Honda service center indicated that the carbeurator was clogged, and I needed to drop the unit off to be serviced. I have not even used this pressure washer, and am extremely disappointed with it. I highly recommed staying away from this product. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Lack of Customer Support from Generac
I purchased one of these through Amazon just over a year ago. It recently failed, although it has not been worked hard.

I am a professionally qualified electrical engineer and it did not take me long to diagnose that two small units, the regulator and the main control board had failed. I contacted the Generac help line which offers: "Set Up Instructions, Service Call Help, and General Use Information" I asked whether I could obtain the required parts and was told all that I could do would be to return the complete generator to them or an authorised service centre! I live in the Caribbean and explained that shipping this back to the US Mainland would be extremely expensive, especially as the parts I required were very small and not expensive. Nice as the help line people were, I could get no help from them at all, under warranty or not.

I then contacted several service centres in Florida who needed the complete generator returned for any repair work, warranty or not. Finally I found a service centre who were willing to help me by supplying the parts that I needed. I have just received the parts and I now have a fully working generator again, repaired for a modest cost, as oppposed to shipping the entire, very heavy generator to the nearest service centre at some ridiculous cost.

My thanks go to Willy at Tropical Lawnmowers in Miami FL(33155)
They were extremely helpful and ordered and shipped the not particularly costly parts for me. Shipping didn't cost a lot as the package weighed less than a pound! If you need some help I can thoroughly recommend them and they have a website under the name tropicallawnmowers.

I am extremely disappointed with the support from Generac, and total lack of help or ability to supply parts themselves or through some of the agents recommended by them. If you are considering purchasing one of these units, make sure that you find out how to get repairs effected without shipping the very heavy unit around. Although the generator section has a two year warranty, I could not use that as I am not near a recognised service centre, and have had to pay for the entire repair costs. Be warned!

5-0 out of 5 stars A $6500 Watt Quality Product for the Home
I purchased one of these units in December of 1999, yes, I was motivated by the Y2K scare but living in the country I needed one anyway and this justified the purchase. I have experienced other generators in this price class and size in open frames and this is the quiestest and smoothest running. I start it every few months and all it takes is to open the fuel valve, turn on the choke and pull once! It comes to life and purrs...well not that quietly. I have yet to find any generator that is not enclosed in this size/price that is quiet but this is the best. The automate idle works fine but the idle is still a fast one and I would be interested to find out how much fuel is really preserved by auto-idle. But it does idle until you put a load on it...even a light bulb! It comes with a nice cord kit and the wheel set is a plus if you plan to move it without dragging. The fuel gauge rattles and could use some sort of damping. The tank will sweat fuel out the lid if it real full and you move it out into the hot sun. Even after running this machine for over 20 hours over 12 months I find it still looks new...including the muffler! Comes with the battery charger kit.

I suspect the engine is really a private labled Honda.

I looked at everything and this is a high quality product for the price. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't complain about missing battery
It is not possible to ship a lead acid battery in a ready to use condition. The acid can spill and is very hazardous. Would you feel better if it had a battery but you had to take the battery to a service center to get the acid put in?
The only problem is that the information should be better. There should be a bold label stating the lack of a battery and why and also a list of various batteries that can be used. A garden tractor battery would most likely do fine and they are about 20 dollars and widely available .

1-0 out of 5 stars Icing Carb - Do Not Buy This Generator
CHARLOTTE, NC: Just experienced the worst ice storm of my life in Charlotte, NC. Five days later and still no power. I bought the last Generac generator from Home Depot the day after the ice storm hit, and I was requried to sign a no return policy. The generator ran for 3 hours and then quit at 11:00 pm., not to run again that night. When I tried to return it the next day, I was told by Home Depot that was not possible. They had 50 generators returned the next day for repair. They tried to blame it on 'owner error', but the truth is that Generac has poorly designed the generator for cold weather. In cold and damp conditions (winter basically), the air intake pulls in cold, moist air which freezes after 1 hour or so, eventually choking out the carbeurator. It thaws within an hour after stopping, and then it will run for another 45 minutes or so (maybe). The air intake needs to come off of the exhaust manifold like most good models that are more expensive. This engine is built by Briggs and Straton, and is sold under Generac and Porter Cable (perhaps others too). Do not waste your money like I have, and do not sign a no return policy from anywhere. Home Depot knows this problem exists and won't do the right thing by taking returns for defective merchandise. They told me that Generac advised them to tell their customers to cut a hole in the shipping box, and put the box over the generator while running. While this seemed like a fire hazzard to me, I was desperate for heat and tried it. I did and it did not work either. Shame on Home Depot and Generac - they have just lost a customer for life.

3-0 out of 5 stars oil drip
From the first day of use the unit has developed a significant oil leak that sprays the entire unit with oil. Since we are a new home contractor we rely on this unit every day. After contacting a local service center they state it could take up to 2-months to receive any parts for the Generac. They contacted Generac to see if there was any product recall or any other problems like this, Generac states there isn't. But I know 2 other people with the same unit and same problem. I orginally ordered the Dewalt generator but couldn't wait any longer after 3 backorders so I settled for this unit. I guess it pays to wait.

Besides the oil problem the unit is very reliable, fuel efficient and is quiet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Generac 6500 EXL
This is supposed to be a premium product (the EXL stands for electric start, extended life and it cost about twice as much as the model with the ordinary engine). Well, it's shipped without a battery and it's a real nuisance figuring out which battery to buy (the type number given in the user's manual simply doesn't exist). It's also supposed to have an automatic no-load idle function but mine won't run at idle. I called the Generac hotline and they said that I had an "engine issue" and wouldn't talk to me. They said that the engine was manufactured by a different company and gave me a different number. The folks at that number wouldn't talk to me since I wasn't a dealer and referred me to a 1-800 number for a local authorized service center. I called the closest center and they said maybe they could get to it in a few weeks. I finally found a center who would look at the machine (cost me [price] roundtrip in shipping) and it still won't run at idle. Don't buy this generator if you are expecting a premium product.

4-0 out of 5 stars portable generator
I bought this generator primarily for use with my 29' travel trailer in primitive camping situations, and occasionally for use for home power outages. Primarily my review is related to the initial package and set up. Overall the package was drop shipped without problem and setup was easy. I was however disappointed that the generator DID NOT include a battery as this is and electric start equiped generator. The inclusion of a 25$ battery seems like it should be automatic to me. However the system starts very easily for a 13 horsepower engine manually and runs quiet for such a big engine and really compared to much smaller generators as well.---overall a good buy ...
