Bosch’s two-speed gearbox lets you match speed and torque to the job at hand. A dual-function control lets you switch quickly and easily from rotation to hammer action, and a mounted depth gauge is a nice touch other makers ought to adopt. The auxiliary handle attaches easily and rotates a full 360 degrees to let you work at any angle. The keyed chuck accepts up to ½-inch bits, and at 5 pounds, it’s far from the heaviest drill of its caliber. The soft grip and comfortable trigger with lock-on button further relieve hand strain. The case will withstand all kinds of jobsite abuse. You can’t beat Bosch.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

  • Variable speed and reversing switch - Complete control for drilling, driving and removing bits or screws

3-0 out of 5 stars Good drill, but ..
This is a very capable, high-quality tool. I bought it to bore through brick/wood and it did very well.

However, the case is cheap. It looks like you can close/open it 4-5 times and it will be done. And, the plastic depth guage broke right away. If you don't care about the depth gauge or case, then this is very good value for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for DIYer
This is perfect for the DIYer. Concrete isn't a problem and drilling through block is no match. I've had to drill through wet wood that bound my "yellow" drill, but it couldn't stop the Bosch. Like everything else Bosch makes, this is one excellent piece of equipment that will last a long, long time. I would have liked a metal measure stick so that it would last as long as the drill, but that's minor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable Drill
Bosch has produced yet another powerhouse, this thing wont give up no matter how much use and abuse you put to it. Always reliable and hard working--build to last!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard working drill
this is my second Bosch Hammer drill. I use it in landscape construction & it is subjected to all kinds of abuse. After 6 years of drilling through every kind of material, in wet & dusty conditions it finally bit the dust. For the money, weight & price I highly reccommend this drill.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill!!!
Bosch has done it again, great product at a reasonable price. I've used mine to install furring strips on both sides of a 200 ft. long block building, works great. Two speed gear box is awesome and it has plenty of power for drilling through even poured concrete. Comfortable to use, lightweight and still tough as can be. You can use it all day and never wear out. AWESOME!! ... Read more

This really is a brute: 18 hungry volts of power behind a steel-reinforced collar, a rugged 1/2-inch chuck with 17 clutch settings and Bosch’s amazing DuraShield body housing. It’s a contractor’s dream drill, tested by Bosch to withstand a 46-foot drop onto concrete and more realistic real-world bumps and bruises. The steel-braced collar will take a drop right on the nose and still protect the chuck. It performs like the Bosch that it is, with tremendous power and ease of use. We expect this tool will last longer than most drills simply because Bosch made it so easy to replace the brushes-—external access means you can get this little maintenance job done in two minutes. Nice ergonomic touches include a wide trigger and a shock-absorbing rubber grip. For some fun, visit Bosch’s website and watch the video of a Bosch DuraShield drill like this one taking the 46-foot plunge—and keep on drilling. It’s no hype.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hang On!!
I own a remodeling company and I bought this drill about 2 months ago, I use it almost everyday; I can attest that this drill can take some serious abuse without even a whimper!! (It has now fallen of 2 roofs onto the cement below; any other drill would have been severely damaged!!) The 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck and 17 clutch settings are well engineered; this drill has tremendous power and is very easy to operate. I like the fact that it is so easy to replace the brushes (2nd set already!!) It has nice ergonomic touches including a wide trigger and shock-absorbing rubber grips that make this drill an extension of your arm. It does come with an attachable side handle to help handle all of its torque. This drill was not made for drilling a lot of large holes in concrete but is up for the task occasionally (3/8" is about max for concrete, 1/2" in brick) and works excellent for smaller sizes. This drill was made for a contractor who uses and abuses tools everyday and not the average DIY weekend warrior homeowner. I highly recommend this drill for any contractor in need of a new drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful drill
I just recently purchased this drill and so far am very happy with the ease that it powers through everything I throw at it. Luckily, I haven't noticed any chuck wobble as described by another reviewer. The drill is very comfortable in the hand and the side handle provides a very nice grip. The depth stop is easily adjusted and holds it depth even with repetive drilling.

This is a bruiser of a drill and probably overkill for a DIYer like me. However, the ease of drilling through concrete block and pressure treated lumber provided by this drill is very nice.

2-0 out of 5 stars wobbling chuck
i purchased this drill in december. after using it for a week i noticed that the chuck wobbles slightly. i returned it for a replacement. it also wobbles. if you use a long bit in it the wobble is significant. once the bit drills into your workpiece, the wobble transfers from the bit to the drill and your hands. i've e-mailed bosch twice about the problem without ever getting a competent reply. i'll get the milwakee. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Bosch 1194VSR
I bought the 6 Amp1194VSR about two years ago to replace my old, heavily used 4.8 Amp 1181VSR hammerdrill which I owned for about nine years. I use the 1194VSR extensively to drill small diameter 1/4" and 3/8" holes in concrete and mortar for conical masonry anchors used to mount conduit straps and metal electrical boxes. In hammer-mode it performs better and faster than my Bosch 3/4" rotary hammer for this type of work, giving a smooth, clean hole with very little run out so anchors fit more snuggly and hold more securely than with holes made with the rotary hammers SDS bits. This is true even with the close-tolerance SDS bits that I use for Tapcon fasteners. The ergonomic handle design of this drill really does help keep your hand from going numb when doing this type of work all day. You and everyone else working around you will definitely want to wear ear protection though, because in "high speed" with hammer mode the screaming sound is most deafening, especially in enclosed areas.
With continuous use, the Bosch's non-metallic motor housing/gear case will get almost as hot as the metal gear case on my Makita HP2010N hammerdrill. This also occurred with my old Bosch 1181VSR and did eventually result in the motor field winding burning out on the old drill. Bosch repaired it free under warranty but I would assume that from the feel of things, with heavy use the same problem could occur with this newer Bosch. Because of the heat factor, I limit my use of this drill to small diameter holes of 5/8" or less in concrete, hole saws of 2" or less in wood and HSS bits 3/8" or less in metal, where it performs exceptionally well. Even with this self-imposed reduction in capacity, I would certainly purchase this hammerdrill again myself and also would have no problem recommending it to other individuals who need to drill holes for small diameter masonry anchors all day. It really is comfortable and light enough to use all day without generating a great deal of undue fatigue. From a safety standpoint, I especially like the fully insulated non-metallic construction. If Bosch could only make some improvement as to eliminate the motors heat problem, this would be, overall, one of the better 3/4" hammerdrills around.

1-0 out of 5 stars Drill overheats
I have read somewhere else (I don't remember where) that this drill overheats. I did not really trusted that review since I had great considereation for bosch (I still do). I went ahead and bought the drill. I have used the drill to make 3 inches long holes thru concrete in percussion mode. However, at each 1/2 inch interval, I would stop (1-2 minutes) to cool down the expensive masonry bit. I would only drill 3-4 holes in a day. In the third day of drilling, the drill overheated and stop functioning. I am assuming that the excessive heat has melted the protective cover on the copper windings, resulting in an internal short circuit. I will take it back to the store where I bought it. I hope for bosch that mine opinion and the other I previously read are a result of just two isolated incidents. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars review of 3850 drill
Sorry that this is not a review of this drill but a spot on Bosch's good name. I have a 3850 18 volt drill that has had low use in 2 years and both batteries are shot. I wrote to Bosch about this and they returned my message thanking me for my interest in Bosch tools. I do not think that was what I wanted to hear. This is the 3 rd Bosch battery drill I have owned and first that is NO GOOD! I have a 9.6 that the orginal batteries lasted about 10 years and it is now on second set that will out perform the 18 V by about 3 to one. I had a 7.2 V that outlasted the availabilty of new batteries. It was a great tool that got loads of use. I have several other Bosch tools but this piece of junk just might end my buying any more of these tools at all. Take hede when considering their tools.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great hammerdrill except for one crucial design flaw
I was at first very happy with this hammerdrill. It's well built and comes with a case & two batteries. It also has a little clip on the handle to hold a screwdriver bit - brilliant. But when I started to drill into concrete the problems began. It drilled the holes as well as the Milwaukee I had borrowed from a friend, but apparently it has a design flaw that allows concrete dust to get inside and cause the speed control mechanism to get stuck. So when I tried to switch between the two speed settings, I wasn't able to push the switch "all the way" in either direction. That meant the chuck couldn't "get in gear" which means the motor turns but the chuck doesn't. So now the drill is totally useless. It's really too bad because I know Bosch makes great tools... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bosch 18 volt drill
