4-0 out of 5 stars very frustrating .... revised
This tool seemed to be a godsend so I went for it. Unfortunately it sounded much better than it is. Like the previous review, my gun hangs up after maybe shooting 10 good caps. After that I have to pull EVERY single cap into place MANUALLY. The instructions are just an add on sheet which don't give you ANY indication if there might be an adjustment to correct the problem. When I'm on a roof trying to beat an incoming rain storm I don't want to hear about bringing it to a service center. I need to take care of things right then and there or lose money!!!
The gun comes with NOTHING, not even the air connect nipple!
This gun is extremely expensive and shouldn't be a source of frustration and monitary loss to me.

Since this review I have spent some time tracking why the gun wouldn't perform as expected. The problem with the hung up caps was/is invariably the flimsy paper roll that holds the caps. If it's just slighly deformed/wavey it hangs up the caps. Now that I am aware of this, I pay attention when reloading and I am actually pretty happy with the gun now. Still hangs up at times, that's why I gave the gun 4 stars now instead or 5.

3-0 out of 5 stars happy but dissappointed
Have a Plasti Tacker Pro and it is great for drying in a roof but have found it to be unreliable. The plastic caps hang up just before dropping into place and jam. Thus driveing a nail without a cap. And sometimes resulting in wasting several plastic caps. It also leaks air at the trigger if held open for repetitive driving. I did have the O-rings replaced in the trigger valves but it still leaks air just like before. For the last couple of days I have been searching for a web site that provides professional technical advise but I don't speak German and that is the only thing I could find except for the places to buy something, they were in English.

5-0 out of 5 stars USED THE LEAST BUT APPRECIATED THE MOST
I HAVE RECEINTLEY STARTED MY OWN BUSINESS BUILDING HOUSES AND I HAVE BEEN BUYING TOOLS WITH THE PROFITS MADE. THIS WAS THE THIRD GUN I BOUGHT AND IT IS THE MOST APPRECIATED ONE I HAVE. I HAVE SPENT HOURS UPON HOURS ON A ROOF TRYING TO GET IT DRIED IN AND THEN I BOUGHT THIS GUN AND IT TOOK ABOUT 75% OFF THE TIME TO HAND DRIVE THE PLASTIC CAPS! I DEFINATELY RECOMEND THIS GUN TO EVERY HOMEBUILDER! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This 1/2-inch chuck hammer drill is designed for drilling holes in brick, cement block, concrete, wood, metal, and resin plate. With additional accessories it can also be used to grind, sand, and polish wood and metal, or to tighten or remove screws. It's powered by a 5 amp motor and has trigger-controlled variable speed from 0 to 2,900 rpm, as well as a variable speed dial to set a speed range. The trigger can be locked on to reduce finger fatigue, and the tool can be operated in hammer drill or drill only modes depending on your application. This hammer drill can drill up to 5/8-inch holes in concrete, 1/2-inch holes in steel, or up to 1-inch holes in wood. The FDV16VB is constructed with ball and needle bearings for durability, has a keyed chuck for easy bit changes, and comes with a carrying case. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hammer Drill?
I bought one, tried to drill a 5/16" hole (half the rated capacity) in concrete with a new masonry bit and smoked the bit. The drill is too fast, even on it's lowest speed to effectively drill holes in concrete, maybe concrete blocks, but not concrete. I took it back 20 minutes after trying to use it. I have other Hitachi products that I am happy with, but not this one. If you want a hammer drill, keep looking, this isn't one...

1-0 out of 5 stars FDV16VB Hammer Drill
I purchased this drill at a local discount lumber yard
and took it home for a personal try,on installing a 1/2 inch drill on second hole thur a 2x4 the drill made a noise and smoke came out the drill, i do not recommend this drill to no one thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good light duty drill for the jobs around the house
Since I have a lot of little jobs around the house this easy to handle light and durable piece of machinery is just the thing I need. The first instinct is to buy a powerful tool but this being a second drill I decided some thing light and easy to use is just what I really need. The drill is quite powerful for its size/weight and its variable speed can be used for driving. The drill would warrant a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the variable speed trigger, which is not as smooth when trying to variate the speed, but with regular use I've learned to feather the trigger for driving screws. ... Amazon.com Review

Hitachi doesn't just make televisions and consumer electronics--they're also at the forefront of the power tool world, and their new electronic variable-speedreciprocating saw is a good example of why. Let's start with the grip, which fit well in our hands, instead of being uncomfortably wide like the grips of other recips we've known. The powerful 11 amp motor takes on the densest materials with ease--and, with the saw's unique "swing" action, it cuts faster than saws with more conventional orbital action. Another feature we like on this saw is the blade removal system, a keyless, one-hand blade clamp that's quick and doesn't break your thumb in the process (we wish the blade lodged a little deeper into the clamp, though; it rattled a bit in tougher woods). On the whole, this is a solid saw with an accurate electronic variable-speed apparatus in the trigger. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The green machine
I bought this saw to replace an old Miller Falls recip saw I had for years. The Hitachi has great power and I love the quick blade change feature. The one thing I was disapointed with was the interior of the case. Instead of making the interior of the plastic case contoured to the tool, Hitachi chose the cheaper alternative by installing a cardboard insert. Other than that, this is a great tool at a great price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome tool!
I have neraly taken apart a house and put it back together with this saw and let me say it is a workhorse. It cut through drywall wood anything. Very easy on the elbow and will take anything you throw at it and very affordable to boot. It has adjustable speed and two cut settings. Highly reccomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee be afraid!
This thing is bad ass! It'll cut threw anything like butta. The power is enormous. I own many sawzalls, and let me tell you, this thing will out cut any of them. I believe this beast will beat anything on the market. With regards to the previous posters remarks about a loose blade and the "vertical plane". That's nonsense! It's designed to keep the blade from snapping due to the overwhelming power of this machine. You see, the blade only flexes on the flat part, moving back and forth. So, it was designed with about a half inch of play to move up and down. This prevent it from snapping when or if the blade gets caught. Capeesh? In fact, check out any other sawzall and wiggle the blade. You'll notice anywhere between a quarter to a half inch of play depending on the power of the saw. The mean green machine will not be beat!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Miserable blade-holding system
The editorial review above says: "we wish the blade lodged a little deeper into the clamp, though; it rattled a bit in tougher woods." I wish the blade was held securely at all. I ordered the saw from Amazon and fired it up. Switching between the straight and "swing" blade stroke had essentially no effect -- in either position the blade would start straight and go erratically into swing at higher speeds. I assumed that the swing setting might be speed-sensitive, but surely the straight stroke was supposed to stay straight at all speeds. I re-installed the blade half a dozen times, making sure the quick-change collar locked into place as directed, and it was clear that the blade was inherently loose in the vertical plane: You could move the tip up and down almost half an inch. I called Hitachi and described the effect; they said the saw must be defective. I returned the saw to Amazon for a replacement, and when that arrived I was amazed to find the exact situation again -- the loose blade and the random stroke action. That one went back for a refund -- my first and last Hitachi tool.

Tool Crib was stellar in all this, with an easy and fast replacement/refund process.

The tool seems well-made otherwise, but a big powerful saw with a shaky blade needs a trip back to the drawing board.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great tool, POOR cord and support
I purchased the CR13VA over the Milwakee sawsall in July. I use it in my home workshop and it performed as good as any I have seen, until I had to keep bending the power cord to put in the supplied storage case. The insulation is now breaking apart and Hitachi will not answer my emails. Four requests were sent over the last five weeks and to date NO REPLY. I will have to mail it to a repair center and hope they won't say it is my fault, but that is another thing to come. I have purchased the sawsall and will after getting the CR13VA repaired sell it. I have some good memories of it cutting the porch roof off my house but don't want to become a statistic from a faulty power cord before my remodeling job is completed.
Would I recommend this saw:
It is strong but do you want to continually replace the very small cord for the life of the tool, or yours. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, solid little drill.
Weight and price lured me to this drill. I work in a cabinet shop and found the 18 volt yellow and 14.4 volt red drills the other blokes had a bit bulky and heavy for all-day use (plus, I have access to their drills and our electric ones, as well). For screw and glue assembly this drill is a gem--it delivers just enough torque to sink everything home and won't break the heads off coarse drywall screws. Pre-drilling / Countersinking operations take a little longer than with more powerful models (and since time is money, I often keep a second, more powerful drill handy for the pre-drilling. I've drilled pocket holes with this Hitachi from time to time, but prefer to use an electric drill (or a heavy cordless drill on a jobsite) with the Kreg jig. I've also drilled dowel holes in 1 3/4 Mahogany with this drill--not without some effort, though. The light weight and compact size of this drill have come in handy for all of us--several corners in a recent kitchen remodel could only be reached with this drill, not with the larger cordless units.

My purchase of this drill prompted one shop member to purchase an even lighter 9.6 volt yellow brand. Initial impressions are that the two are about equal. One disadvantage to the yellow 9.6 volt is that it cannot be stood upright on its base. Since each falls in the same price range, I'd recommend the Hitachi for this one reason.

Battery expenditure is fairly frequent, and perhaps a negative for some reviewers / readers. But keeping the spare in the charger has never left me without juice. Just remember to take the charger to the job site!

I can't comment yet on the longevity of the batteries (still going strong after a year of daily use). When they do finally die, I'll be able to get two for 70 bucks by purchasing another drill! (not bad, since some brands charge 70 bucks for one battery alone). Also worth noting is that Hitachi makes a 12 volt hammer drill that uses the same batteries.

I really don't use the flashlight, but it is nifty in that the head angles and it is free-standing. Rather, I use the flashlight's space in the case for bits and so on The case, by the way, is not as rugged as other brands (especially the sliding hinges). My assumption is that Hitachi has eliminated the frills of a great case to keep the price low.

For the price and performance, this little Hitachi is a great buy. It probably all a home do-it-yourselfer needs, and again, it works for 90% of the jobs in the shop. It has taken some abuse and suffered some job site falls, but has not been damaged. Yes, eventually, I will be buying a second, heavier duty drill--probably the red 14.4 workhorse (now that it has been beefed up to well over 400 lbs. of torque), but a second drill will simply complement, not retire this drill. I highly recommend this little Hitachi. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This new circular saw combines Hitachi's rock-solid construction with a lightweight and ergonomic design. The saw has a powerful and smooth-running 15 amp motor with an electric brake. The motor uses a replaceable carbon brush for long life and easy maintenance. The saw's aluminum-alloy base bevels from 0 to 55 degrees, with positive stops at 0 and 45 degrees. Depth of cut and bevel adjustments are both tool-free operations. The handle has a comfortable nonslip grip, and at only 10.1 pounds, it's hard to find a lighter-weight saw with this much power. Professionals and serious woodworkers who prefer sidewinder-style saws will find this to be among the best of the bunch.--Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Steps Forward, One Step Back
This is an incredible saw for the money - more power, a brake, and cheaper than the old model. It is true that the brake is not as quick as a typical miter saw's. But it does stop in 2 seconds as advertised (manual says < 3 sec. ). That's about 3 times faster than my old Hitachi without a brake. Other brands of circular saws with brakes advertise 2 seconds as well. Another thing I like about the Hitachi is the table is perfectly parallel to the blade. Many other brands I've used are way off. That makes it impossible to make precision cuts using a straight edge for a guide.

The bare aluminum base is a step backward. The old model had a nickel plated base (discontinued in 7 1/4" but still available in 8 1/4"). This was a fantastic feature that set Hitachi apart from the crowd. Bare aluminum makes marks and drags on wood making straight cuts much more difficult. Steel glides better but its rarely used except on Skill worm drives and cheap saws. I really didn't need to buy another saw, but the brake is an important safety improvement and now I can save the old nickel plated saw for mark-free cutting of finished goods. I can't understand why Hitachi cut this corner when the saw is priced so far under the competition. I gave it 5 stars anyway because of the price. But I'd rather pay $20 more and get the better base.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Saw, Great Price
I looked at the Milwaukee, the Porter Cable, and alot of DeWalts before deciding on this one. It was by far the cheapest saw with a brake and a good base, and the quality and durability appear to be at least as good as any of the others. It has every feature I need, and nothing annoying (like Porter Cable's dust duct). It feels like it will last forever, and is a joy to use. I'm glad I got the brake, but it doesn't stop quite as quickly as I'd hoped. Still, it stops alot faster than any without a brake. My only complaint is that not having bought the rip fence when I got the saw, it was impossible to find one locally, so I had to wait to mail order one when I suddenly needed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Value and Excellent Quality for the money...
Short and sweet... Under $100. - Excellent quality with fast Electric brake (every circular saw should be required to have this!), up to 55 degree cutting angle, and a 5-year Hitachi Tool Warranty! Nothing else on the market can touch it... Now, I told it was Sweet... [wink]

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sidewinder!
I bought this to have a right handed sidewinder saw to compliment my Skill 77 wormdrive and the mini PC 6" Sawboss. In over 30 years of professional woodworking, a lot of it using a circular saw of some sort, this one is right up there with the best. It's powerful and has a great line of sight. The controls are in the right places ( tilts to 55 degrees, yea) and it's well balanced with just the right amount of heft. All this and an electric brake, a fitted plastic case and carbide blade for around $100! What's not to like? Plastic handles, ( just about all saws have them now) and made in China. Note to Hitachi CEO. I would have easily paid another $30-40 for a saw of this quality to see 'made in USA' on it! We need jobs too. I tried out the PC saw ( lousy line of sight), Milwaukee tilt-loc ( way under powered) and Dewalt ( flimsy build quality, nice power though, it was the second choice)before getting the Hitachi. It has just had the 'trial by fire' in building a large hip roof using 2 by 10 rafters, 4 by 12 double backed hips, 14" microlam beams and 5/8 ply. Never broke a sweat. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars There's Got To Be A Better Tool Out There
I recently returned the Hitachi Construction Stapler after trying it out on a sheathing and siding job.
I found it inconvenient to work with for a number of reasons.
First, there is no way to direct the exhaust. Sure, I wear goggles, but I also work in remodeling in confined spaces and there is often recent debris around which gets blown into my face. I have a Hitachi brad nailer, and they put a 360 exhaust on that, but not on the stapler.
Second, the only way to adjust staple depth is by fiddling with the pressure regulator on the compressor. Not the hardest thing to do, but hardly convenient. Especially in the conditions where I was working with the compressor located a floor below me. It would have made siding a lot easier if I could have adjusted the staple depth on the tool itself, allowing me to perform different tasks from one setup.
While not a reason to send it back, I was annoyed that the tool came with 50 feet of hose but no hose fitting. Because it is a "professional " model it takes a 3/4 fitting which meant I had to run out to a hardware store on Labor Day to buy 2 fittings to use the tool. A tool box wouldn't have been too much to expect to be included with it either.
While it performed OK for what it was, I'm sure there are tools with better features out there. I think I'll try the Porter Cable next. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ALOT FOR THE MONEY
This is a bargain. You get the drill, two batteries, a charging unit, a case, a built in bit holder with long phillips bit, a small plastic case with 10(or so) bits and the flashlight(adjustable head). This drill has some heft and feels good in the hand. It is well balanced. All the items fit easily into the case. The case has a built in pocket where the instruction fit. This is nice because many times the instructions get in the way when you are trying to close the case. Each battery took about 45 minutes to charge. The other reviewer is right. This drill is not the same as the photo. It is missing the cushioning on the handle.

The only problem I had was that the chuck was jammed open. I had to wrench it free with a couple of pliers.

2-0 out of 5 stars TKO in the first round
I bought this rotary hammer for drilling in grout holes for rebar and anchor bolts and some other misc. holes in concrete. It is a very good tool for someone who has a lot of varied tasks but dosen't work the tool everyday. The clutch is a wrist saver, the bits are harder to find than SDS Max and the price is right. But the tool went down in a matter of hours, and given Hitachi's impossible to locate parts, I'm shopping for a SDS Max Hilti or Bosch. No tool is a good deal if it shuts your job down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
I bought mine a few months ago, and I love it. I use it for breaking up granite boulders by drilling a line of holes and splitting the rock with stonemasons' 'feathers and pins'. The thing weighs quite a bit so it's not the best for small holes in masonry walls. It seems to work best when held vertically or close to it. ... I've not had any problems with it, and it does as good a job as my friend's Hilti which cost him more than twice as much. The spline-shaft bits aren't always easy to find. My local Home Depot has a few, but mail-ordering is usually necessary to find a specific size. I haven't tried to use it as a jack-hammer yet, so I cannot confirm or refute toolpig's evaluation of when it's used as such. In any case, I think I got good value on this tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough and dependable
Like most Hitachi tools , this is very well engineered. It stands up to all kinds of abuse. Mine ran for years drilling all sizes of holes in old hard concrete. I also used it for chipping which is hard on roto hammers. They don't have a lot of power for breaking concrete as this is not their intended primary use. So when you do use them for breaking , they have to run a lot longer than a demolition hammer would. It has pretty good power for drilling though. I bought mine used and had it for five years before replacing it recently. I went to SDS max which is currently replacing spline drive in the large rotary hammer market. It is a tighter mechanism which transfers more of the hammering power to the bit , resulting in faster drilling performance. If you have a lot of spline bits , this would be a good tool to buy. If you are starting from scratch , I would recommend the SDS max hammers from Hilti , Bosch or milwaukee

4-0 out of 5 stars good value for the price
after a year of use and abuse my hitachi is still going strong.it drills fast and easy and in hammer mode drives ground rods and does light demolition effortlessly.i prefer the spline shank drills and accesories over the little sds shank bits but i do use an adaptor for the slightly cheaper sds or taper shanks in the smaller sizes.industrial machinery installation is tuff on tools but the hitachi DH38YE not only came through with flying colors but outlasted a much more expensive brand. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to operate
The switch on this drill is difficult to operate. Myself and two other guys had problems with it. The drill is either locked on or off. If the bit jambs you can not quickly stop the drill or for any matter it is difficult to stop. This is a problem and will probably burn up the motor when it is jambed and attempts to turn. I guess if Hitachi makes a better switch or even a simple trigger it would be a great drill. I am returning mine tomorrow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smooth Operator
I wish my car ran as good as this drill. This is my first Hitachi tool and its the smoothest running drill I own. And I have lots of different brands. Plenty of power, enough to drive 3" screws into pressure treated lumber with ease (while being in a tight space). The controls took a little getting used to. It has an on/off switch with a speed dial at the bottom. But it's very easy to shut off, just tap the switch. It's got the old fashioned keyed chuck, but after going over it, you can get into tighter spaces with it (especially with the side handle off). Keyless chucks are bigger so you can grab hold of them. Whether your drilling or driving, this is the perfect tool for tight spaces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Settle for less!!
After having used this 72 tooth Carbide Blade, I wonder why people would buy any other blade. I bought this blade with my Hitachi 10" ( another great Product) Miter Saw. The smoothness of the cut is just unbelievable. yes, this is one is a bit ... but it's a carbide coated blade so it will last longer too.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Value
I recently found this combo kit on the "bargain rack" at the contractor's favorite mega-store. Out of curiosity I picked it up thinking that it would be a fine stand by set if needed. Amazingly these tools can dish it out with the best that I have seen/used. They are well built and powerful. As already noted, if you follow the simple instructions for ensuring battery life via cycling to start out then I think you will find plenty of power to spare.

For the price paid, and even for more, I think you will find the Hitachi 18V set very satisfactory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hitachi Tools Deserve A Closer Look
After twenty years of marine construction as a heavy timber dock and pier carpenter and commercial diver I have been pleasantly surprised by Hitachi. I have been a card carrying member of a professional line of tools known by their red boxes and stellar reputation as hard hitting durable tools.I had a kit like this one built by the red box company but was really unhappy with the power and I had to send in two out of four tools due to breaking on the job. I replaced that kit with this hitachi kit and have come to appreciate Hitachi. The previous reviewer apparently failed to read the part in the instructions where it talked about cycling the batteries a couple of times before they will hold a full charge(!) Well I have been using this kit hard and it is one hell of an arsonal. Good battery life and strong enough to feel like a corded tool. The circular saw has a light for the blade that helps and the motor doesn't bog down like most battery powered tools, the recip. also dishes out the power. All-in-all a great kit when you need the power but don't have enough of a job to justify humping the cords to the jobsite!

Thanks to Hitachi!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I purchased the Hatachi kit just for pick up work, instead of hauling out extension cords, and running my generator. I ended up doing both as the batteries and lack of power on the circuler saw left me with no other options. I made six cuts on treated 2x6 on a freshly charged battery. The drill using a new 11/8" flat bit drilled maybe 10 holes before dying on a freshly charged battery. I tried re-charging the batteries to see if they would come to life, but they haven't. This set is on it's way back. I don't have time to mess around with something that doesn't work. ... Read more
