5-0 out of 5 stars More than enough power for home use
After acquiring a small pancake compressor, I decided it was time to get an impact wrench. I bought one of the cheap, Chinese made "250 ft/lb" impact wrenches from a traveling tool show. What a mistake. It could not loosen hand-tightened lug nuts. I then happened on a well used 231 at a pawn shop. It has never failed to loosen whatever I have put it on. This includes lug nuts, an axle nut, rusted nuts and bolts, and an anti-corrosion anode on a 15 year old water heater. This tool works wonders on fasteners which would drive a sane person mad if he tried to loosen them with hand wrenches or a ratchet. I would like to get a IR2131, but the old 231 won't let me justify replacing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars 14 years and still kicking!
This is the ONLY 1/2" impact wrench I would ever recommend. It's relatively lightweight. The knurled knob allows you to change the impact force and direction, even with very greasy hands.
I used this for 5 years when I turned wrench, and gave it a good workout. I have dropped it, kicked it, forgotten it in the rain (once), and it keeps working. The only thing I was always sure to do was keep it well oiled and cleaned at the beginning and end of each day. At the end of the 5-year period turning wrench, I bought the rebuild kit (another nice feature, available in the 90's for about {$$$}), which restored all of its original power.
Also, check out the I.R. impact sockets. Value priced at less than ($$$) for the deep socket set, and I have never broken one. Fine tools at reasonable prices!

5-0 out of 5 stars IR-231
Fits in your hand very comfortable. Trigger works great at low power - like removing torx bolts or phillips screws. Adjustable power in both forward and reverse is great. Max power to remove nuts; a little less to re-install. All in one setting. Trigger will NOT pinch your finger like other tools. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best around
This impact wrench is by far the best 3/4 wrench around. I purchased mine a little over a year ago and have had nothing but trouble free use. I've used many other brands and models and this is definately the most powerful, bar none. It is a serious HOSS. My wrench has removed many stubborn yoke nuts that a 1 inch impact could not budge. Everyone in the shop wants to use it instead of the shop tool because of it power, light weight and ease of use. I highly recommend this impact wrench for anyone looking for such a tool. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, useful - You know you want it (but do you need it?)
This tool is well-built and solid, and I have had no maintenance problems with it. (Make sure to use an in-line oiler and always shoot some air tool oil through it each time you put it away).

The drawback of the tool, however, is that it is so solid -- it is unavoidably heavier and larger than a conventional ratchet, and the airline hanging off then end can be ungainly. I have found that it is only useful in cases where I have free access to a large number of bolts which need to be removed or assembled (for engine work, it is indispensable). For bolts with limited clearance, however, you will find that a hand ratchet is *cough* handier (and in cases where you need a U-joint and extensions, fuggedaboudit).

I'm a shadetree mechanic -- not a professional -- but I use the air ratchet several times a weekend. I bought this tool to help with the frame-off rebuild of my car, a task which requires no end of threaded fasteners. Even still, I wouldn't say that an air ratchet was essential. There are tasks which have undeniably been speeded up -- running all the head bolts down before torquing, for use with a deep socket on bolts with a large exposed thread, etc. However, for most day-to-day tasks, I tend to use my trusty craftsman ratchet.

It's a great labor saver -- and a fun, useful tool that will make all your friends green with envy. As long as you realize it's not going to put the car together for you, there will be plenty of times where you'll be glad you got it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best comes at a premium price.
I bought three 3/8" air rachets to try them side-by-side:
Ingersoll Rand IR111
Husky H4003
Campbell Hausfelt TL1001

Ingersoll Rand - The quietest of the group by a fair margin. Its motor is apparently different than the others so the high pitched whine is absent. The reactionless feature is apparent because it changes to a hammer mode (although it is still low torque) when the torque becomes too high. Most expensive. Made in Japan.

Husky - Typical air tool whine. When the nut runs up, the wrench just stops, no impact. Realistically, I can't see this torque being enough to smash any fingers. It has a nice rubber handle grip that the others lack. Half the cost of the Ingersoll Rand. Made in Taiwan.

Campbell Hausfelt - No rubber handle and slight styling differences, but operation is identical to Husky. Half the cost of the Husky. Made in Taiwan.

Conclusion: My logical side says to keep the Campbell Hausfelt because it the best value. The tool collector in me that drools over exotic tools wants to keep the Ingersoll Rand because it is the best tool, even if the difference is awfully small for four times the cost. I'm talking myself into keeping the IR because of the lower noise, but I still wonder whether my choice is discriminating or just dumb.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool toy for the right applications.
After sitting in my tool box for about a year, I finally got a chance to use this air ratchet. I was assembling a dust collector and had to tighten many bolts while holding the nuts on the other side from spinning. Air ratchet performed well, especially since I using it blind on the inside of the DC. Would have been very tedious with a manual ratchet.

Originally I had bought it because I thought I could use with a hex bit adapter and screw driver bit as a right angle drill / driver. However, I soon realized the ratcheting action really wouldn't work for this purpose. Too much vibration and the bit tended to skip off the screw.

Not sure if I can really notice the "reactionless" feature. Haven't had the opportunity to bust my knuckles using other models to know if the IR-111 is any better.

One disapppointing feature is the lack of torque. This air ratchet really isn't capable of removing stubborn fasteners. I guess 50 foot-lbs really isn't that much. I don't have any sure way to tell if my ratchet is performing up to spec. But I have had to resort to my trusty 3/8" Craftsman ratchet to remove tough nuts/bolts. This tool is probably better for tightening fasteners, since there is usaually little resistance and the limited torque will prevent stipping the [threads].

5-0 out of 5 stars An end to knuckle busting air ratchets
They are reactionless so when so when they finish taking up they don't bash your knuckles against whatever is next to the wrench. It screws down the nuts and bolts twice as fast as the old model IR 107's that I was using. Clean lines and black finish, adds a colorful touch to the air tool line-up in your tool box. All in all I would rate it as a superb addition to any professional mechanic's toolbox. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do your shelf a favor Buy IT!
You need one of these if you have ever used a electric one with not enough power. This wrench is incredibly light and very rugged. If you have an air compressor you have to buy this, it has great power and does a very good job in a very small package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big things come in small packages
The old saying, Big things come in small packages, is true. This product from IR is outstanding. You get the comfort and usability in the 3/8 model but with the 1/2 inch anvil. I was somewhat skeptical of the power but no problems exist. I use it as my daily tire and suspension gun now for 3 months with no problems. Just remember to oil daily. The stress of the heavy jobs on the 3/8 motor could be a problem if not properly maintained. In all it's a great buy for the tool man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big performance, small package.
The IR-2112 is a handful especially when you consider how small and comfortable it is. I can work with this thing all day long. Don't let it's small size and light weight fool you. I'd stack it against some of the other 1/2 impact wrenches anyday! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Been an ASE certified Tech for 15 yrs.
I have owned quite a few impacts in my career, but none will ever compare to this one. I haven't found much that I couldn't loosen. The exhaust is muffled so it does have a wimpy sound. At times, I have had to check the compressor to see if it had enough air. Other techs have told me that it doesn't sound like it can loosen a 1/4 inch nut. They soon found out that it is the strongest impact in the shop.i have had this particular impact for 6 years and even with no water separators in the air lines and the tank drained about once every month, I know it will still last another 6. I.R. has a new Titanium impact that advertises to put out 1000 lbs. of torque. I think I will buy that one for the job and take this one home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for an impact? Look no further.
I've gone through probably 6 or 8 impacts (maybe more) in my career. It wasn't until 4 years ago, my tool salesman recommended the 2131. At first I wasn't to sure about the composite housing. Then I hooked it up and it sounded really wimpy! I thought I made a mistake. No way. This thing has such balance and control it's awesome. The one thing I've noticed is the harmonics in the hammer mechanism gives a more smooth and balanced torque to whatever you're working on. As far as durability goes, I've dropped mine several times and is still going. The power is a different story. This thing has loosened stuff a 3/4 inch drive gun wouldn't move! It's easy to control and easy to work with for extended periods of time because of the weight. Mine has lasted four years and is still going strong. It is the only choice for a powerful 1/2" impact!

5-0 out of 5 stars Strange Little Impact
This is one amazing little gun! I bought it because it was unusual, and because of it's claim for 600 ft/lbs.

The hammer housing is metal, but the air vane housing and handle are composite plastic, which makes it very light, but still surprisingly strong. I can use this thing all day long straight over head with very little fatigue. The trigger is variable pressure which can be invaluable at times, and a swiveling air inlet so you don't get tangles. It has easy thumb action forward/reverse buttons on the rear that are just in the right spot, and a 4 position power adjustment knob. I've found that the lowest setting on the knob tightens lug nuts perfectly. It is also very compact, and fits in very small spaces, which is great.

Yes, it does speak softly, but it carries a big stick! I showed it to the guys, and they told me it was "cute". Meanwhile they showed me they're big, bad, top-of-the-line Snap-On impact, and said it's the new sheriff in town. Sure, it was bigger (and heavier), costed alot more than mine, and sure did look pretty, but.....you'd be surprised how many times they asked to use my gun to take out a stubborn rusted strut bolt. That's the icing on the cake!

So YES! I definately would recommend this to anyone that wants an impact is light, compact, powerful, well worth the price, and a conversation piece. If not, then just wait for the Snap-On truck to come, I'm sure he'd be glad to sell you one of his.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of power
I just changed shocks on a full size pickup and wonder if I could've done it without this tool. They were rusted on pretty good, but click-click-click-click here they come. Wow! And though it is applying 600 ft-lbs, I could hold a wrench on the bolt side and it didn't try to rip my hand off. The tool is small, too, so you can get it in tight places. My only complaint is the housing seems to pick up dirt and scratches pretty easy (I work on a dirt driveway). Also, a tool of this price should come with a case, not just a cardboard box, and one that fits the tool with the hose fitting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whimpy Impact
I too thought that this impact sounded awful whimpy the first time I used it. Was I ever wrong!!!! This is a quiet and well balanced impact that is great to use everyday. ... Read more
