Excellent tool
We use this for satellite dish installation, and we are very please with its quality and durability. It is not like the cheap imported models. This is much more precise and the scale if very easy to read. We highly recommend it to all of our dish installers. For the price and quality, it is a 5 stars no doubt.

Good for the Price

great tool
i have owned one of these for years and it has never left my tool belt. it works great for all the specified uses but also makes a useful guide for your circular or jig saw when needed.

Nice Tool - very accurate
I purchased this square for woodworking and don't see the problem mentioned by another reviewer. The square is right on the money. Nice hardwood handle, sturdy construction with brass components. highly recommend to woodworkers.

Best I've Ever Owned
I have owned my Johnson 480 square for over ten years and have come to find it indispensable and a pleasure to use. As for accuracy, I have checked it against several standards and find it to be absolutely "dead on". A light tap on the end of the blade will bring it back into "perfect" squareness in the event of a drop of rough use (I use a steel engineer's square to true the Johnson).

Since I carry my square for jobsite work it does recieve some rough handling on occasion. That's why I'm on - to purchase another of these great tools - just for the shop.

Don't Care About Accuracy?
If you don't care about accuracy, consider this tool. The rule part of the try square I purchased measures short about 1/64" from the base shoe to the first inch mark. Johnson Level claimed, when I contacted them, that their stated toloreance is +/- 0.015", close to 1/64, so I guess my tool is within their specs or very close. A tolerance of +/- 0.015" may be ok for framing but not for woodworking. (By the way, can you find the stated tolerance in the product description?)

Bigger IS Better!
I like this large version even better than the small one I had used previously. It is better as a saw guide and for doing layout work. There are a series of notches that allow you to firmly seat a pencil as you drag the square along a board, using it as a marking guage. This is great for laying out rip cuts - pencil doesn't blow away like a chalk line when your saw blade is spinning. There are scales on both sides of the square for rafter angles. This tool works great on larger 2x lumber, without being as bulky as a 16" x 24" framing square.

Buy it, you'll like it!

Little clamps do monster job
I've been a builder for 40 years and started using the clamps with my Dad, who was also a builder in New England. With the proliferation of speed squares it seems today's generation of carpenters has forgotten how to use a framing square. These clamps without a doubt are one of the handiest items around for laying out stair stringers and rafters (common, hip and valley). For common rafters one clamp goes on the run side of the framing square (12 inches)and the other clamp goes on the rise side, whatever the rise is 5, 8, 12 inches. Mark off the plumb line for the exterior wall and mark and move the square times the number of feet of run (1/2 the total span). The last plumb line is the center of the ridge. Back off 3/4 of an inch and you have the perfect pattern to cut the rest of your rafters. The three S's short, sweet and simple. They work great for stair layouts also. Waste of money
88 degree angle? 92 degree angle? Depends on which time you adjust this poorly made square. Bought it, tried it, and made a half dozen bad cuts..... then tossed it in the junk pile. Just too much variation depending on which time you adjust and clamp it. ... Read more

Good magnet, and OK level
A 5" spirit level isn't going to be highly accurate. But when you're working in tight spaces a small level is better than nothing at all. This unit came in handy when I added some built-in DVD storage shelves in my living room between the wall studs. DVD boxes are only 5-1/2" deep, and leveling the shelves was a head-scratcher until this thing came up in my Amazon searches. With a bit of tapping to get the bubble to settle after small changes the pocket level got the job done.

Interestingly enough, I got a surprising amount of use out of the magnet even though I hadn't considered it when buying the unit. An open wall cavity is just a magnet (pun intended) for dropped nails, and a decent magnet helps greatly in fishing them out. Not accurate
My level was not accurate; measurements are noticeably skewed to one side. These types of levels are self-calibrating, in the sense that if you rotate them 180 degrees, they should remain consistent. I'm not sure if it is the bottom surface of the device that is not perfectly level, or if it is the bottom of the clear plastic top that isn't. Either way, it's not a good thing. ... Read more
