Bring your sharpener
Unfortunately, for such a handy product, the sharpness of the blades does not last beyond a few uses. Even filing the blades to re-sharpen them does not work. Be prepared to replace the blades often, which are not cheap. It's a shame the quality of the blades is so poor--probably the cheap metal used--because it damages the reputation of Black and Decker.

Great little unit.

While mowing the lawn may never be considered a recreational activity, this rear bag mower from Black & Decker makes the chore as close to fun as it will ever get. With its 24-volt battery, which delivers 5-horsepower gas equivalent at peak torque, this cordless electric mower represents the top of Black & Decker's line of lawn mowing products. During our field tests, this orange powerhouse stood out above other mowers for ease of use and performance. Its versatile operation allowed us to mulch, bag, or expel the debris from its 19-inch cutting path. Switching between the three methods was as easy as removing the catch bag and the mulch plug--easily performed tasks when the mower is not running.

The most obvious difference between the new generation of electric mowers and the heavier gas-powered mowers of yore is the start-up. The ease with which this mower starts is almost stupefying. Simply pull and hold the thin handle lever, then pull the ignition lever, and presto!--the engine is running. To minimize safety risks to young children, a removable safety key must be inserted prior to starting the mower.

Once started, this mower runs like a dream and is much quieter than older gas-powered models. In addition to the lack of noise, vibrations were also dampened by the cushioned handgrips, a feature that makes mowing a much more comfortable experience. Another innovation is the method by which the mower is raised and lowered. Where once it was necessary to adjust each wheel individually, the height of the mowing platform is now controlled by a single squeeze of a single lever, which allows for seven positions from 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches. The only disadvantage this machine seems to have is in the power department. While there were no serious problems during our field test, it was necessary to slow down or go back over thicker sections of grass in order to make a completely clean cut. This cordless model also requires a substantial charging time when first out of the box: the manufacturer suggests at least a 16-hour period initially in order to get peak performance and maximum run time. According to Black & Decker, the battery will be 70% energized with four hours of charging. When fully juiced, this mower can be expected to cut between 1/2 and 1/3 of an acre per charge. Though the charge is one aspect that needs to be considered when deciding whether to purchase a corded or a rechargeable mower, we found the added maneuverability of the cordless over the corded model far outweighs the inconvenience of charge times.

This thing is great!
I've used several string trimmers in the past, and for normal lawn work this is the best I have seen. It doesn't have the power of gas trimmers, but I did use it to cut down a 50x30' section of weeds that the neigbor lady needed help clearing. The automatic feed system is very convenient, it doesn't always advance the line exactly when you would like, but on the whole it is much improved over bump-feed systems. The edging feature is also very good, we don't even use our edger anymore, its much more convenient to use the trimmer because we already have it out.

My only complaint is that it does use a thin diameter line, so you do tend to use line faster. However, it is very easy to buy the trimmer line in bulk spools and re-fill the spools. I bought 4 replacement spools and now I just re-fill them and reuse them.

This is G-R-E-A-T
This is GREAT. I started off when they had the bump feed and now this is my second trimmer with the AFS. It is terrific for ladies as it is very lightweight. It has an adjustable handle which makes trimming the sides of ditches easy. I cut several yards per week and and the fact it is so lightweight enables me to accomplish these tasks. I have tried larger trimmers (gas & battery-type) but they were so heavy I could not accomplish my tasks. B&D, please never try to improve on this product. I just bought the 14" because it was all that I could find in my local hardware store, but I am going to return it and purchase this 12" once again; the 14" was too heavy for me and the handle is not adjustable. Cheap plastic ...don't buy it.
We purchased the unit 2 or 3 years ago and while the autofeed is a nice feature, the downfall is that it is built so cheaply, that the plastic hardware that houses the spool has already fallen off, apparently because the plastic-metal junction on the shaft melted the plastic. We have a small yard and are not using the unit commercially. As of this morning...It is no longer functional, and I am going to think twice about purchasing another black and decker weed whip.

Holds up well with little maintenance, but no handle
We have had this trimmer for about 3 years now and it has stood the test of time pretty well with the exception of the handle breaking off in the first year. I will probably go cordless on the next purchase as dragging a cord around in a pain, but have been satisfied with results. I really like the 180 degree edging option.

While this is a nice saw it is not 14 foot It is only 9 feet. So if you are at least 7 + feet tall, you will get the 14 foot reach, properly using this saw without over extending.
