Amazon.com Review

Anyone who has tried working with a Sawzall in cramped quarters and making cuts in confined spaces will appreciate the Hatchet's multiposition folding handle, which reduces the tool's length to a mere 13 inches. While this is a truly innovative design for a reciprocating saw, the fact that this is also the first cordless Sawzall with a vibration-reducing counterbalance mechanism should not be overlooked. This is a feature many of us have been waiting to see in the cordless Sawzall, and it is especially appreciated in uncomfortably close quarters, where any extra vibration and shock just makes your job more difficult. The Hatchet also has a different trigger configuration than other reciprocating saws. When the handle is folded, it feels like a cordless-drill grip and trigger, and when the saw is extended to its full length, it feels like the barrel grips found on grinders. This trigger setup is great when the handle is folded, but not as ideal when the tool is at its full length and being used like a traditional Sawzall. As with Milwaukee's other Sawzalls, this one features the excellent tool-free blade-changing system that reverses the blade when needed, and it has a fully adjustable pivoting shoe. The Hatchet's tough motor provides 2,700 strokes per minute, comparable to other top-of-the-line cordless reciprocating saws, and the tool uses the same reversible 18-volt Power Plus battery as other Milwaukee cordless tools. This model comes with the tool only, so if you don't already use Milwaukee's Power Plus tools, you'll need to buy a battery separately. For remodelers, plumbers, and electricians, we think there's no better cordless reciprocating saw available. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not worth the money
Purchased (2) of these impact drivers for metal roofing and siding, metal studs and some drywall on projects in Alaska. Both impact guns needed replacement (gearing stripped in one, nosepiece cracked on other exposing gears) within first three weeks, one replacement lasted only one month (gears whined like original and then quit). I also had a 12V Makita that still runs great (didnt even have the new NiMH batteries) after(3) of the (4) Milwaukees broke down in IDENTICAL applications. Makita now makes a 14.4V (NiMH) impact driver which is the one I would suggest hands down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concerning torque numbers
I bought this impact driver because 1) it's compatible with my other Milwaukee cordless tools ; 2) having an impact driver as well as a cordless drill allows me to work faster because I don't need to change bits as often and 3) I was tired of mutilating screw heads with my cordless drill. So far it's been a great investment.

Although the 14.4V Milwaukee impact driver has much less torque than their 14.4V impact wrenches and the impact drivers made by some other brands, it seems to work just fine. For example, I can countersink 3 1/2 inch deck screws into red oak without predrilling and without marring the phillips screw head. That much force will probably cover 99% of my fastening needs on the job (I'm a remodeler). On a few occasions I've had screws break from being driven too hard, but I've never encountered a situation where the driver didn't have enough torque to drive a screw. Would additional torque be helpful? Probably not unless I was driving large lag bolts or doing heavy mechanical work, and that's why there are impact wrenches (as opposed to drivers) on the market. I'm a bit skeptical of using an adapter to run a 1/2 inch square-drive socket (especially the larger ones) on a 1/4 inch impact driver.

The impact driver's small size and ability to avoid damaging screw heads are major assets, especially when installing cabinets. Aesthetically, nobody wants to see a screw with a stripped head in the midst of a finished project, and practically, screws with unmarred heads are much easier to remove. The only downside to the impact driver is that it makes plenty of noise when the impact mechanism kicks in.

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak
I have this 14.4V Impact as well as the DeWalt 12V unit. By far, the DeWalt 12V has more torque and speed than this tool. I think, after looking at the comparisons, the DeWAlt 12V has 1000 in/lbs of torque, compared to 740 in/lbs in a 14.4V. Plus, the higher speed in the DeWalt allows it to do more in the drilling area.

Milwaukee overall is a so-so tool, but DeWalt is much better

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch
I am the proud owner of a Makita 12v impact #6916 and never thought I would see better but I recieved the Milwaukee as a gift so I decided to test it thoroughly, here are the results:

I tested the Milwaukee against the Makita, the new hitachi and the brand new panasonic 12v models. My test were with #9x3-1/2
deck screws going into oak 4x4. to my extreme surprise the Milwaukee consistently drove the screws faster, easier and
stronger than all the above listed. There is something unique

about the impact mechanism in the #9081 that makes it seem to be working less hard than the others.

Yes I am comparing a 14.4v to 12v tools however the 12v would have the same characteristics and specs as 14.4's so it is a fair comparison, the big differance will be in the weight of the battery and the run time.
Because I hate to run out of battery juice I feel that the extra
1/4 pound is more than worth all the extra run time a 14.4 will provide. 12v is only valuable for someone who never needs to run alot of screws or bolts in a day and even so I would say they would be happier with the #9081.

The Milwaukee is an inch larger than the others but still feels
tiny in your hand. the additional weight is neglegable.

The tool is an absolute Joy to use and let me not forget, don't be fooled by the RPM and IPM numbers this tool smokes the others.

Milwaukee just did a minor upgrade to this model and Amazon has not changed the specs yet. The current RPM is 2600 and the current IPM is 3300!!! This is the model I tested with.

I am so happy with this tool I don't even want my makitas any more and that is a major statement.

My only complaint is it does not look as cool as some of the others, oh well nobodys perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible tool - controllable torque in a compact package
This is an amazing tool. With relative ease you can drive all sorts of screws, lag bolts, and other mechanical fasteners. It's incredible to sink a 1/4" lag screw into pressure treated wood without any stain on the tool or your wrist!
You definitely have to be careful at first, as the amount of torque is deceptive: the torque is provided by the impact mechanism and doesn't wrench your hand around. Once you get used to using the rate of impact to control torque then it's really easy to drive fasteners and screws to the right torque level.

Large spade-bit drills and augers drive like nothing I've seen before in this size package and with such operator ease! The quick-change chuck handles the increasing number of tools with 1/4" hex shanks, and is really convenient. ... Read more

Milwaukee's cordless screwdriver is a handy tool with enoughpunch for most screwdriving applications, in a size small enough to fiteasily in a tool belt without falling out or taking up a lot of space. The tilting handle offers a better grip in higher-torque situations, and allows for working in tight spaces. The driver has two speeds--200and 400 rpm--for low- or high-torque work, and six clutch settings thatdeliver from 5 to 22 inch-pounds of screw-tightening torque. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love this screwdriver
I'm an electrician i've been useing mine on job sites for 2 years now, mostly on industrial sites. Recently it was stolen i'm planning to purchase a second one in the near future. Accepts all standard screw tips available from any hardware store and comes with a decent assortment in a handy storage spot on the charger.

Another error by amazon.com. I ordered this and according to description (and picture) contains screwdriver bits. However, there were no screwdriver bits when it arrived. This makes this completely worthless to me. Customer service is a pain to deal with in trying to answer problems and questions on how to return item. No help at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy and Reliable!
I purchsed one of the kits containing this Screwdriver about a year ago. It puts the other brands to shame. So far it has really been reliable, and unlike some of the reviews I have had no problem with the batteries. It is very powerfuf for its size and very easy to use in close quarters. If your like me and have to have tools you can count on buy this, you won't be sorry!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Only One Battery
This particular model has only one battery. For the second battery, see Item 6547-22.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best one on the market...
This drill is great, small enough to get in that tight places (Especially if you get the kit vs. the drill only) tuff enough to torque a #12 x 3". The battery is not as long lasting as a full sized drill, but part of being small is ya loose something.

I work on computers with this drill (as a hobby) and am a master plumber (professionally). In both jobs this tool shines. But if you are looking for some thing that is about the same size and is a little tougher and has a longer battery life go with the Panasonic ey6225c... both are made by Panasonic (The Milwaukee 6546 is made by Panasonic and is the same as ey503) but, the 6225 is just a little beefier. ... At about 9 pounds, this polisher is an easy-to-use weight and size, and the side handle can be moved to the left or right to accommodate each user's preference. Very handy. The variable-speed trigger switch allows you to vary the rate of speed when you're polishing, slowing down or speeding up depending on the application (0 to 1,750 rpm), so it's easy to be precise. There's an easy-to-set dial speed control. The 11 amp motor never bogs down, making it easy to bear down when a deep polish is required. The glass-reinforced nylon handle is comfortable to grip and stays cool even after extended use. The spindle lock makes for convenient, quick accessory changes. We really like the detachable Quick-Lok cord, too. Cut or damage the cord, and--if you own other Milwaukee Quick-Lok tools--simply swap cords. Easy, right? (Plus, it encourages buying more Milwaukee tools--never a bad idea.) All in all, this is an easy-to-use polisher, perfect for general use. (Pros, however, might want something faster.) So whether you're working on your car, boat, RV, or tile flooring, Milwaukee's heavy-duty polisher will bring out the natural shine in no time. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Spend the extra few bucks and get the Mwkee 5540
This is a very nice polisher. Their is nothing wrong with it. The reason why I suggest the Milwaukee model 5540 polisher instead, even though it is a few more dollars, is because it polishes up to 2800 RPM's. 1750 is usable for a lot of purposes, but 2400 is where you want to be for the ultimate gloss in catalyzed urethanes or old world leaded lacquers. (They took the lead out years ago, and their went the glass like gloss, so next day polishing on catalyzed urethanes is the mile deep club)
I had a body shop for 20 years, did a lot of high-end cars. Spend a zillion hours behind a polisher. Had a multi step polishing procedure. First you wet sand the car with 600 grit or 800 grit wet dry sandpaper. Then you use a true silky smooth tie on lambs wool bonnet and Dupont 606 hand application compound. (The secret is after going over the car the first time with the 606S compound, put on a fresh lambs wool bonnet, and go over the car a second time. It is amazing how it improves the gloss. That way you have a true polished surface to build your protection on. Then use liquid ebony to eliminate the swirl marks, then Maguire's machine glaze, and then hand glaze. People couldn't help but come over and ask you about the finish on the car. Three new bonnets are required) Anyhow, 1750 rpm's didn't do something, like warm up the finish enough to give you mind blowing gloss. The 5540 gives you up to 2800 RPM's with a speed setting dial, so you can tweak it in to the desired speed, which is 2400 for, automotive.
By the way the owners manual, which is available here at Amazon at this listing, and the listing on the 5540 as well shows you that the hook and loop pad is available as an option, with several different types of pads, depending on the application you are using.

Milwaukee makes great equipment, and no matter which model you choose, it is a nice piece for your arsenal. I just think the 5540 is worth the extra money, because of the increased capacity into an area that includes automotive level of finishing. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice, heavy-duty machine
I compared this with the Makita 9227-c side by side. The Milwaukee is a good deal beefier and I'm confident it will run all day long if I ask it to. Note one difference is the Makita has a hook and loop (velcro) disk if you are for or against that. The Milwaukee has a plain rubber disk. I don't know if H&L is an option or not.

I use this for final buff-out of high gloss lacquer furniture finishes and it works great.

A nice feature is that the back has a "stand" of sorts, so you can lay the tool down securely without contaminating the bonnet. Also nice is the twist-lock cord that helps prevent breaking the conductors at the point where it leaves the tool. I have this problem with other tools that require a sharp bend to get them back in their cases.

This is variable speed, with a dial, so all you do is dial in the speed and pull the trigger switch. The speed dial is conveniently located at thumb-tip above the trigger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavy duty and well balanced
When you what a polisher with some guts this is the one. Having been a Millwaukee fan since my first hole shooter drill, I expect a lot from each product I buy from them. This polisher is no exception. You can put a nice buff on a wax job with a light touch, or you can grind off 10 years of oxidation with rubbing compound and a firm application. The Millwaukee just keeps on working, staying cool in your hands and not bogging down. Costs a little more to buy this quality at first, but down the road these tools are always a bargin. ... When it comes to recip saws, Milwaukee is the undisputed king, the "Sawzall" name serving almost as a generic label for all reciprocating saws (to Milwaukee's chagrin, we're sure). The flattery is completely deserved, especially when you factor this model into the mix. It's the only cordless recip saw we've seen with orbital blade action for serious cutting jobs, yet it weighs under 6 pounds. Plus, it's incredibly compact and actually fits between 16-inch-on-center studs. Milwaukee's clever reversible battery mount lets you get into spaces other recips can only growl at. Adding to its charm is a six-position handle for even the most awkward cutting angles. And it cuts at an impressive0 to 2,700 strokes per minute. Milwaukee says their Hatchet will cut up to 85 2x4's on a single charge, but we have to admit we didn't test that capability. Milwaukee's Quik-Lok tool-free blade clamp is a breeze to use, and it takes universal 1/2-inch shank Sawzall blades. Tight quarters? Just reverse the blade. The other tool in the set, the Lok-Tor Hammer Drill, is the king of torque. Milwaukee's Lok-Tor models have an all-metal, single-sleeve ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws, so you know the grip is the ultimate. It has to be, because this drill stands ready to deliver 495 inch/pounds of torque. It feels great in hand, thanks to Milwaukee's thoughtfully designed grip and auxiliary handle. 5-0 out of 5 stars This tool has made a Milwaukee devotee out of me
The offroad club that I lead (Longhorn Offroad), has been building an RTI ramp recently out of 1/4" box steel. For the uninitiated, an RTI, or Rate of Travel Index ramp, measures how much wheel travel a particular vehicle has. We've been using a stick welder, chop saw, and two angle grinders to build this beast.

I'd been eyeing this grinder for quite awhile, and when we got sick of having to switch from grinding to polishing wheels on my friend's DeWalt, I picked one up. Milwaukee has a great tool in this little grinder. It can flatten down a weld in about half the time of the DeWalt. With the cutting wheel, I can cut through steel faster than the chop saw. It can also cut through automotive frame rails without a second thought.

My favorite thing about this grinder is the trigger action. The DeWalt's was slightly awkward and located a bit too near the wheel for my taste. The Milwaukee's is larger and easier to work with gloves. It also allowed for better balance and thus easier operation of the tool.

If you're doing woodwork or anything delicate, I'd steer clear of this machine. If you do regular automotive modification or any heavy metalwork, however, pick up one of these. It is a wonderful tool for everything from cutting off bolts, to grinding welds, to even cutting through fully boxed steel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee 6154-20
Very comfortable could not bog it down with pressure when grinding. have owned several other top brand grinders and really liked the Dewalt. This has much more power and can be used for longer periods of time without hand fatigue. The power is impressive. It doesn't rev as quickly as the others though.

3-0 out of 5 stars size is everything
I have had great service from every milwaukee tool I've purchased over the years and this one is equally well thoughtout and constructed. I do have some reservations about this one. It is in no way a "mini-grinder" and if that is the size of tool you need for your application .... don't choose this one. In the world of 'bigger is better' and 'one-tool-can do all'consumerism this one fits right in. I've been in fabrication and construction for many years and it is a waste of your cash to try to make one tool do it all. what this tool is great for is metal fabrication or sculpting (stone), it is too heavy for wood and if you already own a 7" grinder/polisher why duplicate your tools? It is too heavy for intricate work and too large for tight places. I will use it in my scuplting and for foundation work and beams. If you're a carpenter I can't recommend it, try Bosch or milwaukee's smaller grinders. Better yet don't buy the tool online until you've talked with someone who has used that particular tool. I would not buy this tool again for the applications I had in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars More power arr arr arr !
When I saw they increased the amperage rating to 12 , I just had to have one . I was not disappointed. This little beast screams. It does get pretty warm though ,if you dial the speed down and put a heavy load on it. Its really nice to have so much power on hand in such a compact size. It blows the other mini's away! ... Amazon.com Review

Milwaukee's rugged and durable cut-off machine has a heavy cast-iron base. All it takes is one cut to realize this is a quality piece of machinery. We cut a bundle of metal two-by-fours with no problem at all. Letting the blade do the work, we made smooth, accurate cuts in angle iron, pipe, and rebar. Individual features make a big difference. The Milwaukee sports a 5-inch-square capacity, which is larger than most other saws. An onboard wrench is conveniently located on the base (no need to guess where you put it). The saw's arm locks down to protect the blade during transport, and there's a conveniently located carrying handle. (While the saw, at 47 pounds, is portable, we wouldn't want to tote it all over the place.) Though initially we thought the base seemed narrow, once set in place, the saw held surprisingly steady. The cast-iron base rests on four rubber feet, one of which is cleverly located below the back of the blade where it's protected from sparks--smart thinking in the design area. The verdict is simple: this cut-off machine earns our highest praise. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the same old Milwaukee
I bought this saw hoping to have the same reliability as the older models had. After 3 months of light use (first blade still), the switch hung up is the on position. It had been stiching on more than once but finally died. I went to the repair shop for warranty work on the tech said it would not be the last switch i'll put in this saw. He also said the saw is made by Ryobi. Buy the Makita instead.

I make steel sculpture & furniture. I've used mine to cut short lengths of 1/2" plate, lots of 1/4" x 2" bar, channel, angle iron, and rebar without a problem. Adjustments for different size stock are quick; for angles you need to use the wrench but, unlike others I've used, it holds the angle without slipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine
I love this machine. I can't believe I wasted so many years with a hacksaw. Only had it a week, but so far it has worked perfectly on unistrut, rebar, steel tube, heavy-wall aluminum tube, and steel plate. I'm totally satisfied with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong performer
After shopping around, this machine is clearly built better than the rest. Others had cast aluminum or stamped beds, the Milwaukee is cast iron. My first job was cutting 10 foot sections of 3/16"x3" angle iron, the tool held them perfectly aligned and cut them smoothly in about 10 seconds. No wobble or runout. Also have cut some bricks with masonry blade with excellent results. Great tool, not much more $, why buy anything else. Only drawback; a little heavy to lug around for portable use, but that's the price for sturdiness.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy on the wallet tough on steel
i found this chop saw to be a great deal.it performed exactly as i expected a millwaukee power tool to do.i have been in the welding and fabrication buisiness for 23 years and also operate a mobile welding buisiness,so i demand quality performance out of my tools.the saw is very well built and very stable,i have had no problem cutting long pieces of angle iron, pipe and plate steel out in the field and at home.the vise held the steel securely and the motor had no problem handling the tasks at hand .after looking at at least six other brands i decided on the millwaukee for one ...the price and also the reliability of other millwaukee brand power tools i use. this saw is great for the weekend warrior,or the full time professional. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for its purpose
I;ve had this tool for about five years now. It is almost never used to drill holes. Myself, and fellow contractor friends, have relegated this tool exclusively for use in High-Torque applications like mixing drywall mud, grout, floor leveler, thinset mortar, even small batches of concrete. I've never had mine act up and none of my buddies have ever seen one burn out. If you're looking for something to run self-feed (forstner) bits through studs & top plates, this isn't the tool to use. Wth a bit installed, it will not fit in between 16" OC stud/joist spaces. A Milwaukee Hole-Hawg or Super Hawg will be much more suited for that application. But if you've got a need to mix cements, grouts, or muds though, this the tool to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super powerful.
I picked up one of these at a pawnshop (not quite the same model, mine has variable speed) and am very impressed. I thought the Milwaukee Magnum hole shooter was powerful - this is TWICE as powerful, literally! Electronic speed control would be nice but oh well, you can't have everything. Almost, though!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific bargain
If you believe in protecting your tools, and at the prices tools go for why wouldn't you?, this Milwaukee Steel Carrying Case is is ideal. It's sturdy, roomy, and conveniently laid out. The locking mechanism is reliable, unlike other cases. If you are a professional or just handy around the house, this box is a necessity, not a luxury. And at Amazon's prices--a bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tight, Compact, & Rugged
Every bit of a great place to keep the tools. I have a Milwaukee drill in mine--and the case provides a safe, compact and rugged place to maintain and tote a tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Case
I'm a believer in cases for my tools ........ saves them from damage and this is one of the best. Plenty of room for a drill with bit and a tray for accessories. Well made, it will last as long as the drill. Metal cases are a vanishing breed, probrably for cost reasons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent accessory to any of the Milwaukee drill motors.
I don't understand the attraction to all the plastic blow molded cases that come with the power tools today. None of them, even Milwaukee's plastic cases, have additional room for all the accessories you use with electric drill motors. I have a Milwaukee 12Volt screw gun and their ½" Magnum Hole Shooter and both came with the steel carrying cases which I fully utilize.

The removable tray is excellent for bringing everything I need to the job. Each box is a complete set up for that drill motor. In my ½" Magnum box there are drill indexes, set of auger bits, two large Milwaukee self feeding bits, index of screw driver bits, 8" extensions for the augers and self feeding bits, set of counter sink bits and a right angle head attachment with install tools. I have just as much stuff in the cordless drill case plus the charger and extra battery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 20 Years and Going Strong
I have had this saw for 20 years and it is still running great. It will cut through 6x6's with only two passes, one from each side. It will cut 4x4's with a big overlap. I have a Jesada carbide blade in mine now that is a real smooth cutter. I have used lots of other blades over the years, even 7 1/4" in a pinch, but the Jesada is the best.

One caution - make sure you use an extension cord that is rated at or above 13 amps so you won't damage the saw motor. I have always taken this precaution and have never had to rebuild the motor. I use a 10-3 100' cord most of the time. The heavier cord costs less than one overhaul. ... Read more
