Get the right battery
It would seem that the NiMh batteries don't like being stored. A friend has four of these 'N' batteries. He uses them every day at work and the older pair are now nearly four years old. He's had no problems, and they still hold their charge well.

But if you want a battery for a handyman drill (for weekend use) stick with NiCads.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!
I previously owned a Panasonic battery drill with the ni-cad batteries, which I truly loved. When the time came to replace the batteries (They lasted about 7 years) I decided to upgrade to a new drill ( also a Panasonic) with the new ni-mh batteries, what a mistake! The newer ni-mh batteries boasted a 50% longer run time which they did not deliver, and also a life-cycle of approximately 1200 charge-dicharge cycles. After less than 50 charges following the manfacturers instructions, these batteries no longer will hold a charge. I have owned this drill for about 2.5 years and use it only around the house, but that is the same way my old drill was used. Of course Panasonic won't do anything about it because it's beyond warranty, but at around $... a crack these batteries should last more than 25-50 charges. Maybe these batteries last longer when used heavily in construction , but for a homeowners use these are TRASH! My advice, save your money, buy the ni-cads.

panasonic's battery tools
Can't find anything bad to think of when discribing panasonic's ey6407 12volt drill driver or the ey6431 15.6 drill driver. I've been using these two drills for work for 2-3 years now, and being an electrical contractor which has its times of abuse towards tools, I'd have to say they are rugged enough to keep up with me. My 12 volt drill has been in my tool collection for the better of 3.5 yrs. and this is the first time I'm buying a new pair of batteries (dropped one tapped it up and it still works!). Still it's time to replace them, but it's worth the money. Oh, by the way I've also aquired the 15.6volt eyc133 drill driver/ skill saw combo (also well worth the money).

Can't get there from here
It seems Panasonic has made it impossible to upgrade to NMH batteries unless you buy a whole new outfit. It took a real study in 'logic' to work this out. All combinations lead to a new system. I refuse to be be 'faked out' so I cut the black case off of my 12 volt nickle cads with a band saw (just deep enough to slip the case off)and hooked up a set of leads with alligator clips which can connect to a 12 volt auto battery or similiar.

I would love to order this battery, but ...............
OK, now we know that this new battery needs a special charger. I was going to order a new 12 volt drill with the two ni-cad batteries and charger, AND ONE OF THESE NEW FANCY BATTERIES, assuming that the new charger will be the latest charger and will handle the old batteries and the new batteries. Now I don't know what to do. Panasonic did this once before. They came out with an "Iron Man" battery and you had to send in your charger and they would update the old charger to handle the "Iron Man" batteries. We did these one at a time, as we have three of the 3/8" drills and three of the chargers. Today I will just order the new drill with the two ni-cads and the charger, read the book to see if it can handle the nickle-metal hydride batteries. Panasonic should have offered a deal for the new 12 volt drills where you could pay extra and get two metal-hydride batteries instead of the two ni-cads for $40.00 more. Good utility.
A well-made accessory for use with Panasonic battery packs. It could be improved by use of LED's instead of incandescent bulbs.

Shame about the egonomics!
I bought my lantern in 1996 and use it often. It still has the original bulb (my mini-maglite bulbs sometimes only last a few weeks) so either the bulbs are really good quality or the electronic module (which reduces the voltage to around 7.2volts) gives a really steady voltage. The lamp in this and the 15.6v lantern is 7.2v, 0.75amp. The beam of light is very focused and shines for well over 100 metres (330ft).
However I find the handle is almost useless. When the lantern is carried by the handle it seldom points where required. If I try tilting it, the spring loaded handle snaps around to the next position (especially with the newer heavier batteries - and Panasonic withdrew the lighter C battery earlier this year). Fortunately I have long fingers and can grip the unit around the battery, which enables me to direct the beam where I want it (and is also steadier than using the handle), but I wouldn't recommend the lantern to anyone whose hands aren't big enough to grip it in this way - make sure you try it before you buy it!
I replaced the rubber switch cap with a new one late last year (2001) after the original perished.

Too Bulky
I bought this lantern to go with my 12v drill/driver that I have been using many years. Everything works fine, but the unit is much too bulky to include in my toolbox, so it gets left at home.

Great light, poor ergonomics.
I've got the 12v version. I use my lantern to light my way home during winter months (it's a 15minute walk from the station). The power is fantastic (more than I need). The beam seams to go for hundreds of yards.
But the ergonomics are bad. The lantern sways too much when held by the handle, so I hold mine around the neck (luckily I've got big hands). And even with the standard twelve volt battery it's too heavy! Fortunately I've still got one of the old compact batteries which is lighter to carry.
The bulb lasts forever. I've had this lantern for six years and it still got the original bulb (my maglite bulbs last as little as a few weeks).

Need more light
Since receiving my Panasonic 15.6 volt lantern I have forgotten about 3 volt flashlights and 6 volt lanterns. The amount of light and the distance this unit can project it is fantastic, as is the battery life, but that is only the beginning as the quality construction contains numerous features starting with the on-off switch which is positive and protected with a rubber cover. Battery Pack Replacement
These batteries last a long time. I have had mine for over a year and abuse them regularly. The charge time is quick too.
Resently I had the clips fail that hold the battery to the drill. I was lucky that nothing broke when the pack fell to the shower floor I was installing.
I contacted Panasonic today to complain. They told me that there is a recall on several style batteries made durning a certain time period. My batteries were withinn that period. They will be replaced at no charge. Check your to see if you can get new packs. All this makes Panasonic tools that much better!!

Total Power for Time
I own many power tools and when i purchased this Panasonic Drill I also purchased the 15.6 volts battery. I do home improvement jobs for many coworkers of mine and the first time I did a sheet rocking job it worked wonders. I hung approximately 50 Sheets of rock requiring about 30 screws each. This battery held its power as well as the duration of time which I utilized it. Your talking about screwing in 1500 screws in a matter of hours. This battery my be high priced but I will tell you from personal use you get what you pay for. So for you contractors out there take it from me. Grunty
I received my 3.5Ah EY9201 NiMh 'G' battery for Christmas, so I haven't been able to give it the test of time (hence only 4 stars) but it's a grunty looking battery.

It weighs 820g (1lb 13oz) compared with only 700g for the 3Ah 'N' battery; and 520g (1lb 2oz) for the 'C' battery (but then a charge should last 3 times as long as the 'C'). To gain the extra capacity the cells are almost square, giving them a larger cross-sectonal area. This leaves very little space inside the battery pack - hence the screws on the outside.

I've read of the previous NiMh 'N' battery packing up in as little as seventeen months. A friend has had two for nearly two & half years without trouble, but he never lets them run down. If he uses them at work during the day, they go straight onto the charger when he gets home. Maybe that's the secret to long life for NiMh batteries.

The weight and the 55min charging time would be the only negatives. ... Read more

i am a mechanic at a mercedes dealer, i've used and tried many-many drill drivers, & this panasonic is the best. it is the fastest at 600 rpm. very light. easy to use. the electronic clutch is very adjustable and precise for torque settings,i use it everyday with only one battery; the fifteen minute charger is a must. this is a pro tool and well worth the money. the only other driver comparable is the milwakee but slower at 450rpm. the panasonic driver is the tool for interior work. i recomend it highly. ... fantastic cuts without the nicks and splinters
If you own a panasonic cordless saw then you already know that you have to use a panasonic blade because of the oversized arbor. Never the less it is a great saw blade and remains sharp for a long time.
