4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of power but blade clamp can act up.
I actually have two of these saws at my disposal and one of them is great, the other i have had trouble with the quick change mechanism. Both saws have lots of power and can tackle any project they are assigned to. They have no problem cutting fiberglass or metal with the correct blades. My only gripe is that the quick change on one saw will not unlock sometimes and when you finally get the blade in it, it doesnt lock: it can be a little finicky. Power to spare and then some- however porter could also work on some better in-box blade storage for longer blades. The milwaukee sawzall seems to have it all down pat- after all they are the original manufacturer of reciprocating saws.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plenty Of power.....Watch Out Milwaukee!!
Hello All,

I purchased this unit as a B-day gift for my brother who is a plumber. For years he's used the old standard, a Milwaukee Sawzall All.( As I have myself) Now that he has this new Tiger Saw, he's changed his tune as to who rules the roost. This saw has plenty of power to cut through the toughest of cast iron pipe. The size to weight ratio is good, and the unit feels very comfortable in the hand. The variable speed is smooth without being jerky as some saws are. If I had one gripe about this saw it would be this, it only comes with 1 blade!!!! COME-ON PORTE CABLE, even Milwaukee gives you a VARIETY PACK of blades with the saw. Oh, and the blade that DOES come with the saw is for cutting wood, not pipe which is what my plumber brother deals in all day long.

This saw would have gotten 5 stars from me if only Porte Cable had included a few different blades with it. So, if you are like I, a Milwaukee fan true and blue, you might find yourself switching to a new team called Porte Cable.

All circular saws are not equal. This one would sit above the rest even if all that set it apart was its blade-change system. No more wrestling with wrenches—-say hello to Porter-Cable's Quik-Change keyless, tool-free blade change setup. It's ingenious in its ease and simplicity. But the good news doesn't stop there. It's aggressive and powerful, cutting cleanly through whatever you feed it. Some really nice features distinguish it, too, like the on-board cord clip that keeps the power cord clear of your cutting line. And the built-in dust port that rotates 205 degrees for efficient dust collection with a 1-inch outlet. Even the handle gets a nod from us, with its soft, comfortable grip. Miter capacity is a versatile 0-50 degrees, and of course, there's a super-accurate positive stop at 45 degrees. Whether you're a dedicated home do-it-yourselfer or a professional, you can't go wrong with this saw.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Light and Powerful
I've been framing going on 25 years now and have used my share of saws through the years. I must admit that a Skil Model 77 was my saw of choice from the beginning and still is now, most of the time. The worm drive with the blade on the left is by far the most comfortable for me. When Porter -Cable started making circular saws that are more powerful and lighter than the trusty model 77 and with the blade on the left side ( like the worm drive)- I had to check one out. What I primarily use mine for is stacking up a bunch of plywood and ripping it down into small strips, very hard on *any* saw. This little saw powers through the plywood considerably better than my worm-drive. The little extra 'oomph' the 15 amp motor provides makes a big difference(the worm drive is 13 amps). Works fine for regular use as well(cutting 2x4's, etc.). I first had the Porter-Cable 743K and I just tortured that poor little saw and it lasted longer than it had any right to, so when it died I had to get another like it. Porter-Cable has certainly earned my respect with the last saw. The 423MAG has alot of power in a very light package.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would give it a zero for safety
I bought this saw online and the first time I used it, I nearly cut off my hand. The blade guard is so poorly designed that it will only free the cut material if used left-handed. That's ridiculous -- you get a left hand blade so you can view kerf better.
Second, this "professioal" saw does not accept diamond arbor blades, has no framing hook and no after-market arbor blade flange conversion.
Bottom line: Overpriced, unsafe amatuer-grade saw. I returned it and lost $30 in shipping, but value my digits and extremities more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not for the casual user
I have had a PC combination 19.2 V set for five years. It has given me excellent service, doing everything from screwing in wallboard and studs to driving a garden auger through hardened clay in my garden. It is not a set for the average homeowner. It is heavy, overly powerful and too expensive. The only negative with the set is the expensive battery. I have replaced 2 at $90 each. The portable circular saw is excellent for use in areas where electricity is not available. I used it to refurbish a barn that had no electric service. The drill stands upright on the battery - a very convenient feature. The flashlight is powerful and long lasting. The set is well designed with comfortable hand grips and space for two spare bits on the drill body.

Another user recommended an Hitachi. I have the model that he recommended. It is a good medium service drill. However, the PC is much more powerful. For the average homeowner a much less expensive 12V cordless would be sufficient.Use it. When it dies, throw it out and get a new one. I don't buy factory-reconditioned tools. Although they are less expensive, I find that I get better value with a new lesser model.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money...
I bought the driver and saw kit and the hammer drill kit...new. In the first year I replaced the drill/drivers three times...while under warranty. The saw worked well and the flashlight was the best part of this kit. Now it is a couple years old and the batteries are dead and at $90 each I am not replacing them. I bought Hitachi this time with a five year warranty. I wasted $600 on the Porter Cable junk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
I bought this item thinking it would last me a while because I would be using it as a home owner and not a contractor, I was wrong. I was happpy with the performance until high gear went out on the drill. This occured after the factory warrantee was up which left me a powerful slow drill with no other features. I will never buy a reconditioned tool again. I should also state that I do have other porter cable products that am very happy with.

1-0 out of 5 stars [not a good deal]
"Reconditioned."I don't think so.Both batteries were shot and the saw blade had been damaged. After I replaced the blade and the batteries I would have been much better off buying a new outfit. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Porter-Cable, the original inventor of the modern pencil sharpener, hasbeen making smart tools since 1906. The company's most recent breakthrough is aportable oscillation spindle sander, a tool unlike anything else on the market.Traditionally, of course, spindle sanders have been bench tools. Now, withPorter Cable's portable model, instead of carrying the workpiece to the tool, you take the tool to the work. It's perfect when laboring on large projects, such as sheet material, cabinet pieces, countertops, and stairtreads--situations where, in the past, a woodworker might have tried to get by with somerisky belt sander magic only to end up ruining a piece and losing time. It's agreat tool, in particular, for cleaning up after jig saw cuts. Because thespindle is perpendicular to the base, you get a 90-degree finish no matter whatangle your jig saw bit might have strayed.

Porter-Cable's sander is smooth and quiet, too, and it's easy to operate: simplyguide the sander along an edge much the way you would use a router. As with alloscillating spindle sanders, the combination of rotating and oscillating actiondelivers a smooth, burn-free surface.

This is a sizable tool, but the smooth action and the molded body make itcomfortable to hold and easy to maneuver. You can adjust the speed of the orbitsand the rate of oscillation, letting the sanding action easily adapt to avariety of applications. There's also an adjustable edge guide with two fencesthat work like infeed and outfeed tables on a jointer, so you can determineexactly how much material you want removed. This sander also mounts toPorter-Cable's router table, giving you the option of inverting it and using it as abenchtop sander. There's also an integrated dust port for dust collection. Thetool comes with a standard 2-inch drum, but can take 1/2-, 3/4-, 1-, and1-1/2-inch drums as well.

Will this spindle sander change the world? Well, maybe not, but it will makeyour life a lot easier if you're a kitchen fabricator, remodeler, carpenter, orserious home shop hobbyist. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A home improvement enthusiast from Porto Alegre, Brazil
I fully agree with the home improvement enthusiast from Phoenix, Arizona. By the way, great review (see it).

4-0 out of 5 stars the wonders of this sander
I really dont want to gush on this product but for the price
it is it will quickly pay for itself. I have used it numerous times on wood, solid surface, and laminate. It is pound for pound an excellent buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great idea. However, refinements are needed.
This sander works well and is a strong tool. However, a few changes need to be made before it deserves a five star rating. First, the straight edge fence provided with this expensive product is trash. Porter Cable probable spent two or three cents on this important accessary (and it shows). Secondly, this tool needs a case. Porter Cable does not make a case to fit this sander. Thirdly, you must purchase an adapter plate to attach the sander to the P.C. router table (poor design). Otherwise, the sander is another strong and reliable tool from Porter Cable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool and great design !
It's amazing that no one else thought of the portable spindle sander idea before this. I find myself turning to this tool more and more. I've used it to clean and straighten plywood edges using the included straight edge - it does a terrific job. I've also used it to trim fit an already hung Mahogany door. Yes, I could have used a planer, but this tool made easy work of sanding down the high spots. I'll be doing some curved work soon and I'm not dreading the post jigsaw cleanup - this will make easy work of that as well. I'm giving this four stars because the spindle set was not included with my purchase - this should be made part of the package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea from a great company!
Now I can get the edges of those angled jigsaw curve cuts straight! This tool is great! I can sand the edges of a table top or cabinet top and get it perfectly 90 degrees to the top surface. I also fabricated a couple of brackets and mounted it to my workbench so that I can use it like a regular benchtop spindle sander. I also like the fence that comes with it. It keeps those edges arrow-straight. Quality is great and typical of Porter Cable. It's not cheap, but comparable to the bench top models and will do the same thing. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

There's nothing you can't do with this puppy. A full 19.2 volts of power will do away with fasteners as if you had a jackhammer in your hand, and 470 inch-pounds of torque provide all the drive power you'll need. Because of the two-speed gearbox, you've got drill speed ranges of 0 to 500 rpm and 0 to 1,500 rpm. Its 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck is keyless, and the 20-position clutch takes care of drilling and driving into all kinds of material. Porter-Cable's drills are among the best on the market; you'll never regret a Porter-Cable purchase. But here's one more reason to go with this model if you're in the market for a cordless drill/driver: the interchangeable Grip-to-Fit handle inserts. Having grappled with tool handles that were too big to control, we think this system is a great idea. There are manly sized grips included, of course, but for the woman woodworker or cabinetmaker, welcome to a delight--small grips! The kit is a good deal--it includes two batteries, a charger, a case, a bit, and side handles for hammer drill use. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy RIDGID TOOLS
I have one of this in a Quad pack and it is a waste of money. although the power is ok you cant keep the batteries charged. I spent a lot of money trying too figure out why the drill didnt last long and i came too an conclusion that the drill and Porter Cable Sucks. For real power and Juice BUY RIDGID TOOLOS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Porter-Cable 9987 19.2 - Volt Hammer Drill / Driver
The hammer/drill is on the heavy side, but is an excellent hammer drill. I have been drilling very hard concrete with a very good non-hammer, corded, drill and it would take several minutes to complete each hole. The Porter-Cable cordless hammer drill complete a hole in seconds. Love the drill, just a little on the heavy side.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Tool, Bad Battery
This is a great tool; smooth, not heavy, rugged case, good power. This does have plastic drive gears which eventually wear out but is fine the casual worker or light work. I spent 3 weekends driving 3/8 lags screws and stripped the gears. No problem getting a new drill. I have 2 other similair models but the batteries last about 2 hours with medium work load and may take 4 or more hours to cool off and take 2 hours to charge. My old model PC drill last 4 hours and charges in about 1 1/2 hours. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Frozen collet
Bought this router because of all the good design features and good reviews it got. Sure feels great in hand, but the collet doesn't release the bit. You end up having to tap it to release the bit. This model has not changed for about 30 yrs. I think it is time for Porter Cable to upgrade this little nice router with a self releasing collet. Other than that it is a great little router, but mine is going back simply because of the collet problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars It won't let go of the bits..............
I recently purchased this trimmer based to a large extent on reviews here. Unfortunately the writers obviously were happy using the first bit they put in it, because none of them mentioned the largest fault of this tool. The collet will not release bits, making changing bits absurdly difficult. Based on the use of my Hitachi and DeWalt routers, I assumed this problem had been solved years ago. The last time I had a problem like this was on a Sears I purchased over 20 years ago. I have given the 310P, 3 stars because other than this problem I am happy with the tool, but I would not have bought it had I been aware of this problem and I hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Built to Last!!!
This is a solid tool. Porter Cable hasn't changed this proven design for nearly a generation! Yes, there is room for improvement but for precision routing there is no better tool for the job. First of all, this machine feels like a router and not like one of those flimsy Rotozip designs. The motor housing is machined aluminum and not cheap plastic. All the adjustments are simple with a no nonsense concept. What would be a nice improvement is a simple lever release instead of the tiny round knob.

The beauty of this machine is how well the tool fits your hand. The half slot opening gives you worry free confidence your pinky finger won't turn into hamburger. Yes, there are a few sharp edges from the protruding contours but nothing beats the control your palm has over this trimmer. Maybe PC should adopt Milwaukee's "Body Grip" concept for this unit along with a plunge mechanism. Imagine a rubberized "Body Grip" plunge trimmer. Then again, too much change won't make this tool what the 310 is all about!

I know there are cheaper trimmers out there with more bells and whistles. But wrap your hands around this baby first. You'll appreciate the elegance and control this machine has to offer. Vibration is kept to a minimal with the excellent power to weight ratio. Power is more than adequate for a router this size. Routing visiblity is great and is greatly improved with one of Pat Warner's clear lexan sub-bases. Best of all, PC did not cheap'in this machine to compete with the competition...instead they introduced the 7310 which is far from being the successor to this fine tuned legend.

Too bad, PC didn't provide a metal case for this high priced machine. A cool pint size metal case would really complete the ensemble. I guess most people who purchase this trimmer are capable of building one with fine wood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well built
This is clearly a very well built router. The height adjustment is brilliant! I have a rather noisy PC 690 router and was delighted to find that the PC 310P is much quieter. The starting "kick" referred to in another review is definately there but not nearly as much as I expected. For anyone considering a small router or laminate trimmer this is an excellent way to go!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the only router you will ever need!
Well, the time finally came when I had to replace my 30 year old Craftsman router. The main shaft was exhibiting a little too much wobble for my tastes - this, after I rebuilt the works with new bearings.

I've had my eyes on the Bosch 1617 for a couple of years... nice router, but pretty heavy and the knobs felt too big to my average (yea, just average) hands. Then it occured me, "Jeez, all I ever do with my old router is edge work and pattern rout material in a table setup. Do I really NEED 2 hp and all that tool weight? Why not check out the trim router offerings?"

With the exception of this one model, they all (DeWalt, Bosch, PC) seem to have very similar builds, features and "feel". They just seem like Dremels or Roto-Zips that will hold router bits. The depth settings were so-so in their accuracy; the feel was just not what I was looking for...

Then, but what should my eyes fall upon, but the 25 year old design of the Porter-Cable 310 "Production Laminate Trimmer" - looks pretty much like a 690 on anti-steroids. Weighs in at less than half the weight at 3-3/4 lbs, has the ring depth adjustment just like the 690, the on/off in the same placement, round base, all ball-bearing, cast and machined body (not plastic like the other trimmers), and turns @ 27,500 rpm with its little 2/3 hp motor. And, only $150 bucks. WHAT!?! $$150$$?!?! I can get the Bosch for that just about that amount; guess I won't be saving any green with this purchase. Pry out the wallets boys & girls.

Hmmm, could this one be what I'm looking for though? I do, afterall, seem to be gravitating to smaller, less beastly tools of late. But would the 2/3 hp be enough? Would it mount up in my table? Can I make bushings and other accessories work? The short answer is, "Yes!" to all of the above - accepts P-C bushings, mounts up to a table just fine.

Zowie! This little router really packs a punch! Kind of like driving a sporty little roadster instead of a Mack truck. Boy does this thing handle!

Mounted it up to my table and ran off some test cuts > A-OK. Will be making up a plexi/lexan/polycarb aux. base with knobs for it. Someday maybe I'll go the mega-hp router route, but for now I'm enjoying my new pint-sized screamer (actually it is MUCH quieter and smoother than my old Craftsman). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best In Its Class
Plenty of power- doesn't bog down. Long lived ....... in shops I've worked in PC was the sander of choice.Belt tracks very well. The variable speed is handy and is a separate wheel control as it should be. At this price and the full warranty it's a no brainer. You could pay more and get a lot less sander.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need to remove alot of stock? This sander is the best.
After trying several belt sanders on the market, I was extremely happy to come across this one. For starters, it never bogs down. No matter how much pressure is put on the platen or how long it runs, the motor never bogs. That was the main problem with other belt sanders I have used.

The sander also has some heft to it. It is not a light weight machine. This is good because it doesn't need a lot of extra force to remove a lot of stock, and the weight helps to keep it on track. If weight is a concern for you, you need to look elsewhere. Although the "elsewhere" sanders won't work as well!

This sander is tough. I was sanding a faceframe one day when my partner accidentally unplugged the machine. I set the machine down (this part is embarrassing) forgetting to turn the trigger off. When I plugged it back in, it pulled itself across the bench and onto the floor before I realized what was happening. It bounced a couple of times and continued across the floor before pulling the plug from the outlet. It purrs like a lion to this day. There has been other times when it has been dropped or stepped on and has never had any problems.

The only drawback, and the reason I gave it only 4 stars, is the dust bag. It gets in the way sometimes when working on other than horizontal surfaces. It can be swung around, though, to the left or right out of the way. Also, the dust bag forms a rub hole, right at the top where the aluminum tube ends inside the bag. I've sealed it with clear silicone which works fine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Porter-Cable BSI550-W 5,500 Watt Generator with 10 HP Engine
We just went through a power outage and ended up having water in the basement! Our battery back up sump pump was working hard, but the battery went dead. The solution and savior is this portable generator. We bought a Porter-Cable BSI550-W 5,500 Watt Generator with 10 HP Briggs and Stratton Engine. This generator is easy to move with the wheel kit included! Also the OHV engine and electronic ignition make it a breeze to start up! Every time it has started on the first pull! My wife can move the unit and start it up just as easy as me! Never again will we be caught off guard without power! This unit has enough power to run the sump pump, space heater and other small household appliances. Be prepared and get yourself one of these! It is one of the best priced units with good power ratings, engine and a wheel kit! Thank you to Porter Cable and Briggs and Stratton!

4-0 out of 5 stars Starts easy, runs good!
The shipping of this generator was good. The shipper was ABF Trucking. Their local agent coordinated with me before delivery, which took place two days early.
The generator was shipped with the portability kit in the same box. The instructions for assembly were clear and understandable, but did not help me attach the foot brackets to the generator frame. The frame was drilled but not tapped, so I could not get the screws that were provided started. I used a 1/4-20 tap to thread the holes. Assembly time was about two hours.
After following the preparation instructions, putting fuel in the tank and oil in the engine, and reading the starting instructions on the top of the fuel tank, I pulled the starting cord once, and the engine started. This generator provides enough electricity to run my water pump (1 HP), start my oil burner and run the circulating pumps, run the refrigerator, TV, and provide 1500 watts of lighting. It still had capacity left over, since it handled the startup load of the water pump very well. At $679 this generator is a great backup power source for the average size household. A voltmeter and loadmeter on the control panel would be nice, but at this price I think that is too much to ask.

4-0 out of 5 stars Porter-Cable BSI550-W 5,500 Watt is a work-horse.
I purchased the Porter-Cable BSI550-W 5,500 Watt Generator with 10 HP Engine because I had to have portable power for residential construction. I bought it so I could run 13 - 15 amp circular saws and a 15 amp, 5 h.p. electric air compressor. It would not kick the compressor on when the air was at 100 lbs. so a serviceman set the rpm at 3700 rpm instead of the factory set 3600 rpm, which generates at 140 volts, no load. It runs great and runs super good. The negative side is having to idle it above the recommeded rpm and the extremely loud noise it makes even with the quiet muffler that it came with. There is also a loud rattling sound in the lower part of the 10 hp B and S engine. I don't know if that's a defect that can be fixed or something that you have to live with. It seems to come from the engine connecting rod to the piston. Other than that it is a great generator for the price. A person who uses it occasionally might not even be bothered by the rattling noise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bang for the buck!
This is certainly a step UP from the usual 4,500 watt "budget" generators! Very easy to assemble and a wonderful heavy duty unit that will power MOST of my house in case of electrical problems. Be aware.. you will still need to probably purchase a transfer switch (around $400) and cable (another $50) plus a couple hundred more for installation if you want to do it the "RIGHT" way, however, I figured that in the event of a power outage, it is MORE than worth the cost. I purchased this item when there was free delivery, which was great, because the shipping company said that it would probably have been an additional $200 for shipping this item! I also got a $50 rebate and the price was quite a bit lower than it is now, but I still don't think you can go wrong with this unit. The large fuel tank is certainly a plus! Of course, the delivery company met me and delivered it to the "street" (I had to drag it UP my driveway), but it was well worth it for the price (free!). Porter Cable has a great reputation for this equipment, and I'm looking foward to giving it a full test as soon as my power drops out this winter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent
I am very pleased with this generator. I'm not exactly Tony the toolman, but this was a breeze to start up and to attach the wheel kit. Just added gas and oil started on the first pull. I'm just waiting or the electrician to show up and install the transfer switch and I'll be ready for most anything. I was told that since my furnace is gas and don't have a well pump that I'll be able to hook up most of my house. The shipping with ABF was a little tedious, I had to leave work and arrange a meeting place, but the driver was cool and helpfull. Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow. ... Read more

Imagine the feel of 385 inch-pounds of torque in compact package. That's what this great drill/driver delivers in the lock-up position, powered by a 12-volt battery. Because of the two-speed gearbox, you've got drill speed ranges of 0 to 425 rpm and 0 to 1,300 rpm. Its 1/2-inch chuck is keyless, and the 20-position clutch takes care of drilling into all kinds of material. You'll never regret a Porter-Cable purchase; their drills are among the best on the market. But here's one more reason to go with this model if you're in the market for a cordless drill/driver: the interchangeable Grip-to-Fit handle inserts. Having grappled with tools handles that were too big to control, we think this system is a great idea. There are manly sized grips included, of course, but for the woman woodworker or cabinetmaker, welcome to a delight--small grips! You just can't go wrong with this. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Customer
I purchased a 12v cordless drill/driver 2 years ago. One of the batteries that came with the package began to fail after a year. The motor failed at the 2 year mark. The motor replacement cost was $80.00, almost as much as I paid for the drill. After 2 years for light use, I used the drill for around the house projects, I had an unusable product. Needless to say I wouldn't buy another Porter Cable drill and I wouldn't recommend this drill to anyone. I expected this drill to last longer than 2 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great power, very happy
I got this at the same time as I got a cheap, 15.6v Crafstman drill as a gift. They couldn't be more different. If you're considering a cheap alternative like that, let me list some differences:
- The PC has WAY more power. Don't let the voltage rating fool you. I have had the Craftsman drill bog down far more often than the PC drill.
- Brake and locking chuck - When you take your finger off the PC trigger, it stops immediately and locks in place, making bit changes much easier and avoiding turning screws too far.
- Speeds - There is a speed switch on the top of the PC, not the Craftsman. I have found this very helpful when switching between drilling (HI) and screwing (LO).
- Apparent quality - The PC feels better built. It has that steel-instead-of-plastic feel to it. It probably is a little heavier, but that's probably due to more metal and more battery, a trade-off I'm fine with making.

This drill has had plenty of power and battery life for me in my furniture building. I drilled 400 holes in a pair of bookcases and had to switch batteries once. I asssembled 8 drawers using these two drills. I had three drilling tasks: drilling a large hole (3/4"), drilling a small hole (1/8"), and turning a screw. Eventually, the craftsman drill ended up just turning screws because it was too slow to change bits on it and it was slower drilling even the small holes. The only reason I used it on the screws was to skip another bit change to put the screwdriver bit in the PC. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Porter-Cable's 1-3/4-horsepower router is popular with woodworkers for good reason. It's reliable, powerful, and exceptionally smooth running--not to mention versatile. Although the 691 comes with a D-handle base, the motor is interchangeable with Porter-Cable's excellent plunge base or two-handle fixed base. Both matching bases are available separately for much less than the cost of a new router, and switching bases for different applications is a quick and easy operation.

We really appreciate Porter-Cable's new autorelease collet design, which prevents bits from getting frozen in the machine. It'd be great if Porter-Cable could come up with an alternative to needing two wrenches for a bit change, but this minor inconvenience is far outweighed by the tool's overall quality. In fact, Porter-Cable's focus on simple, quality engineering is the reason for this model's long-lasting success. The router doesn't offer electronic variable-speed control or enough power to effectively double as a shaper, but it is among the smoothest-running routers we've tried, producing consistently clean results. For most applications it offers all the versatility and muscle you could ask for. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Router
This router is great for a first or only router because of its versatility. You can buy a plunge base if you need it, but i dont really care for it too much but it is cheaper than a new diecent router. The dhandle is a great feature it gives you alot more contol than just the two knobs found on most routers.1 1/2 hp is pleanty of power for most applications. The collet i dont mind but use real wrenches, the ones in the kit are cheap and tend to cut your fingers especially if the bit is in there really tight. The 690 series is the most popular router, many other accesories are avalible, which make it even more versitle. If this is your 1st router of your 50th, you have to have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use it all day long.
This is a wonderful router. We have made blind, taporing, dovetail socket routs, and parts to match. With this router we wiz right through the ladder rails and rungs with no complaints from this router. I just wish that the bits would keep up with the router. The "D" handle is just the perfect size, and the locking trigger is perfect for all of the routing that we do. The only complaint that i would have with this, and this is with every router I have ever come to research, and use, is that you can not hook up a vacume source anywhere on the router. Luckily i work in a wood shop with my father, and he is definatly from the "old school" and we designed a great design for that. Thanks Porter Cable, Daniel Kroeker Juniata, Nebraska GO HUSKERS!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy Tool for the Shop
I found this tool to be up to the usual Porter Cable high standard. It was well finished, and ready to go out of the box. I especially liked the D-handle with trigger motor control which allowed for instant on/off control of the tool. Bits are securely held in the collet, and come out freely when the collet is loosened. There is plenty of power for a hand held router, and the torque is applied smoothely so the tool does not jerk in one's hand. The only reason I did not give this tool the highest rating is because of the "knuckle buster" type of wrench system used to loosen and tighten the collet, but this is typical of all Porter cable routers. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not very good trimmer
I have a PC heavy duty router and it is great, so i ordered their laminate trimmer. The chuck does not hold the bits very securly, and must be retightened every minute or so no matter how hard you torque on it. The bases are very difficult to change, requiring a tool and a couple of minutes. I would recomend looking at the other options available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice but less than accurate flush trimming
Two weeks old and it's going back. The router base setup is less than ideal. A mounted bit should be at 90 degrees to the base but it's off by a degree or two. If you're trimming 1/4" to 3/8" off the side of a hardwood facing this is less than ideal. The bits pilot bearing runs hard against the lower material leaving a mark and the edge of the facing requires substantial sanding after your done. Checked out a few others in the store and they have the same problem. Called P&C and they claim it should be 90 degrees. The offset base heats up from the vinyl belt in the housing making the unit warm to hold for long runs.

The unit itself feels well made but adjusting the depth is a bother with the base lock loose the base is free to canter a 1/16 - 1/8 so you're always adjusting and then tightening, adjusting then tightening trying to get it just right.

Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice very nice
I can't think of any thing else you would want in a laminate trimmer. It's got everything. It's not hard to change out the bases when the time comes. I wish it was a little smoother and a lot quieter in operation though. It's not any better in those respects than my ten year old Bosch. It is far more flexible though . I was going to get another Bosch but this was cheaper and Makita didn't offer one in a kit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brian
I've tested many different laminate trimmer kits that are on the market and have found the porter cable deluxe kit to be the best value for the money. The four different bases that come with the kit allow you to do most any kind of trimming with precision and comfort. The undercut base is especially usefull for making perfect seams on large counter tops. when adjusted properly the seams almost dissapear. The porter cable router itself is smooth running with very little vibration as compared to others. The only down side that I can see is changing the bases can be somewhat combersome and time consuming, however, the added time it takes to change the base is offset by the amount of time it saves by doing the job faster and more accurately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Porter Cable Deluxe trimmer kit
As usual the tool has a good feel to it. My granddaddy would say it is built hell for stout. My only complaint is I expected a little more in the way of examples of each part in use. The examples of how to set-up each attachment are clear, but how you use some attachments are left to the user to figure out. Also the bits that came with my trimmer are not the ones listed in the instructions. They are 1\4 and 1\8 inch bits but I am unsure if you need the bits listed in the instructions because a different grind on a bit makes a lot of difference where the cutting takes place. The two bases I did figure out (standard and offset) worked as expected out of the box. I am sure this is another tool I will use and pass on to my Son. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
I purchased this hammer drill after the death of my Black & Decker 18v Firestorm. Initially, I had considered similar products from Matika and DeWalt, wanting the additional capability of the hammer action, with the smaller bulk of the 14.4v battery. The Porter Cable GTF comes in fairly robust case, complete with a diagnostic charger, stabilizing handle, 2 batteries, driver bit and different size (S,M,L) adjustable hand grip inserts. I found the drill some what hefty, with it's balance just forward of the hand grip; which is the only reason I did not give it 5 stars.

Power
Offering 420 in-lbs of torque (50 in-lbs more than the Matika and 20 in-lbs more than the Dewalt 14.4v hammer drills) it has plenty of power and will easily snap the head off a 4" deck screw driven into a railway sleeper. The high/low settings will give you 450-1400rpm, and in hammer action 18500bpm. Battery life was excellent, allowing me to do several hours of deck work before swapping batteries. The charging unit can recharge your dead battery in approx. 1hr, it will also analyze the condition of your battery for optimal performance.

Handling
As mentioned before, I felt this was heavy drill. It does not balance as well as the Dewalt or Matika, which is probably why it feels heavier, though it certainly not unmanageable; much smaller than the enormous 18v Craftsman drill, that thing is a whopper. However, because of it's forward weight, using the hammer action vertically is really easy. There is also the option of swapping out the hand grip inserts, which helped reduce fatuige on the hands and wrists. Ergonomically speaking, fine. The stabilizer handle screws into either the left or right side of the drill which is a tremendous help when using the hammer action. Either way you are still going to develop your biceps - just make sure you use both hands.

Controls
The forward/reverse button is directly above the trigger control, as per usual. The motor has the high/low switch located on top of the motor housing. It would have been nice to have an extra third gear, like the DeWalt - but not essential. The clutch collar has variable torque setting's (22) with the drill and hammer action located next to each other. The battery is removed by way of a red button on the bottom flange of the grip. Depressing this button, the battery easily slides off. The battery is securely held in place buy this same locking button.

Chuck
All steel 1/2" ratcheting chuck lock and spindle lock. The one thing I like over the Dewalt, is the fact the jaws will easily grip a small 1/16" or 3/32" drill bit. The DeWalts chuck jaws cannot clamp on small bits such as these, because of the gap where the jaws meet.

Quality/Overall
The drill is well built and solid feeling. Fit and finish are excellent, there are one or two tiny (hair width) gaps where the metal gear housing meets the plastic body, otherwise fine. It feels like it was built twice as strong as in needs to be. I did forget to mention it has two metal clips to store your driver bits. Costing...$...less than the DeWalt or Matika, it's worth every penny. For home owners just wanting to drive screws and occasional home maintenance, there are much better less costly alternatives. However, if you are looking for a true, solid work horse for frequent heavy usage and occasional defense against bumps-in-the-night, I highly recommend it. ... Read more

This Porter-Cable 2-horsepower, 6-gallon pancake compressor transports easily but has plenty of capacity and power--enough to support heavy use of brad and finish nailers and moderate use of framing nailers. This is an oil-free unit, and its advanced Teflon coating doesn't require maintenance--a big plus on the convenience scale. The 120-volt universal motor starts easily in cold weather and draws only 10 amps--so you won't have to worry about tripping breakers inside residential homes--and you can use it with an extension cord. Features include a high-flow regulator, an easy-to-read air pressure gauge, automatic thermal overload protection, an industrial-style quick-connect body in the air outlet, and a long-life motor with replaceable brushes. The compressor weighs 32 pounds and has a handle built into the motor housing, so it's relatively portable. This Porter-Cable is as convenient and easy to use as any compressor out there, and it's just about ideal for brad and finish nailers that are being used inside people's homes on a regular basis. --Jonathon Tudor ... 1-0 out of 5 stars bad compressor
I purchased a combo pack, 1 month after the warranty ran out the compressor stopped working, I took it to a locate service center , which stated motor barins where gone and it would be $240 to replace, it was cheaper to buy a new one. When I emailed porter cable , it took a long time for a response , by then i had bought a new ( different make)compressor. they build them so you have to buy more parts then you need. Look a different model.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once pneumatic, you never go back
The Porter-Cable 2HP 6-gallon pancake compressor is a reasonably powerful and reasonably portable air compressor. I think it's the perfect machine for the somewhat-serious do-it-yourselfer (like me). I only recently purchased one but I am already sold on pneumatic tools, which the PC 6-gallon compressor operates surprisingly well. Although many pneumatic tools, such as air hammers, drills, and sanders, consume quite a bit of air (generally in the neighborhood of 5 CFM at 90 PSI), I have found that my PC compressor does just fine with its modest 2.6 CFM at 90 PSI. Unless you need to operate the tools continuously for long periods, the 6-gallon tank provides sufficient ballast to keep them happily buzzing and spinning at full power. My one complaint is that the motor and compressor are a bit louder than I expected. Then again, the noise of the compressor is hardly noticeable above the din of an air hammer, so I'm not sure it really matters.

If you enjoy using power tools and you have not yet experienced the pleasures of pneumatic gizmos, you should consider purchasing a small but serious compressor like the PC 2HP 6-gallon pancake. It's truly amazing how versatile compressed air is; basically any tool that runs on electricity also comes in a pneumatic version (well, except for arc welders). And, in my admittedly novice opinion, the pneumatic versions have many advantages; they are more durable (with surprisingly few moving parts), often cheaper, and usually more powerful than their electric counterparts. It makes so much sense to have all your tools share one powerful motor instead of replicating motors endlessly; that is, if you can part with your cordless tools.

But be warned! If you take the plunge into pneumatic tools, there is an endless stream of items you will find yourself purchasing: air tool lubricants and cleaning kits, in-line oilers, air hoses and gauges, quick connectors, air filters, oil-water separators, Teflon tape, universal air hose joints, air manifolds, blowguns with assorted nozzles, etc. You'll also find yourself eyeing things like sandblasters and 12-ton jacks, even if you have nothing to blast or lift. (Okay, maybe that's just me.)

One odd thing I've noticed is that the PC 6-gallon compressor is virtually identical to the Craftsman 6-gallon compressor, right down to the paint job. I'm not sure who copied who, but I can't help thinking that a good design is worth copying. Either way, the PC version (and presumably the Craftsman as well) is an efficient and mature design. It's a great way to get acquainted with pneumatic tools. Get yourself one, and let the fun begin!

4-0 out of 5 stars Porter Cable CPFAC2600P Compressor
Pro: Great little compressor for mobile and small shop use. I use it very often to run air nailers for doing molding on the house and back out to the garage to run a paint/finish sprayer. Plenty of power at 150 psi
Con: Runs a little to often
Overall happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good Specialized Compressor
This compressor is great for what it was designed for. And, that was an intermittant duty compressor for single nail gun operation. To keep this units weight down which provides great transportablity, a universal brush motor was used. Now this kind of motor is very powerful for its size and weight, but it cannot match the heavier and larger brush free induction motors of larger compressors. Period. If you take the time to read the manual that comes with it, this fact is well pointed out. So, if you want to run a few big frame nailers and maybe an impact wrench now and then to fix your service truck or car, look beyond this unit. I use this compressor with great satisfaction running some trim and 15 gauge nailers. Not much of a challenge and well within the duty cycle of the brush motor. Now, brushes wear down and eventually need replacement, so be aware of this too. If you are handy with electrical devices, fine, save money and do it yourself. If rewiring your wifes toaster brings on a cold sweat, you will need to bring this compressor to an authorized service center as well as your bank card. The compressor is oil less, so along with less maintanance, less mess on wood work and so on will be realized. The unit is very light weight so if your in your fifties like I am, you won't have to wait on younger members of your crew to carry it for you, so in that respect your pride is protected as well. I really like the rubber hose connecting the compressor section from the tank. Most use copper tubing, which over time will work harden, break or leak. The hose should last the life of the compressor which will be quite a long time if you use the unit within its stated design parameters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good, all purpose compressor
I've used my compressor for almost a year now, and it has performed flawlessly. It is light, easy to move and can sit on any surface. I power a Porter-Cable framing gun, a Porter-Cable roofing gun and and a Porter-Cable finish nailer with it, and can't say enough about it as a do-it-yourselfer's product. It has more than enough power to do the job I ask of it. I think it is a great buy foy the money and highly recommend it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When Porter-Cable recently reintroduced this popular planer, professionals everywhere rejoiced. It is widely regarded as the most solid, reliable, and effective hand planer on the market, and we heartily agree. While other tools boast speeds between 12,000 and 15,000 rpm, the Porta-Plane's beefy 7 amp motor runs at 22,000 rpm. Porter-Cable combines that power with a spiral-blade cutterhead that shaves the wood rather than chopping at it the way a straight blade does, producing smoother finished edges than those produced by other power planes. This model has a solid and true stainless-steel bed and integral fence, which bevels from 15 to 90 degrees. The price may seem pretty steep compared to other hand planers on the market, but in this instance you definitely get what you pay for. For pros that expect to do a whole lot of door trimming and hanging, there is no better tool available. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Better Palne for Doors.
Over the years I have tried lots of different ways to fit doors and have not really been satisfied with the end result until after buying this plane and the book "Door Hangers Handbook". The Spiral bit makes all the difference compared to my other straiht blade plane. The cuts are smooth and easy to control. The depth of cut lever is very easy to adjust. The Bevel fence feels real solid compared to other planes I've used. I bevel the sides of the doors to 3 degrees so I just cut a block of wood using my miter saw that has a 90 and 93/87 degree faces. This way I can set the plane to the bevel and back to 90 in a couple of seconds and it is super accurate. One last thing, this plane is much quieter than I thought it would be. I'm actually looking forward to doing more doors with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Doors etc
My wife bought me this machine 25 years ago. I still have the plane, and the wife. It is (the plane) a sweet machine. It is primarily for resizing doors, but I have used it for a jointer of sorts with good success. If you are a door man/person (sorry) its the one for you. I assume it still comes with a carbide blade. If you want to surface plane, you want something else, but for up to about 2.5 inches this is the one.

Hope this helps. JA

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of all electric hand planes
I have owned this electric hand plane for about 22 years. The bearings have been replaced several times. Also, the cutter has been sharpened several times. In addition I own a few other planes. But this one is by far the best in terms of smoothness of cut and reliability. It is easy to adjust and use. I used some other Porter Cable planes and this is still the best.

Excellent tool for door installation, doesn't have an equal.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PorterCable classic
When I learned that this classic model is in its last production run, and that stocks are limited, I ordered one immediately. This is the best production planer ever, period! The price is a little steep compared to the competition, but you're paying for the the quality and design. I haven't used it to hang any doors yet, but I know I will. This tool is my companion for remodeling carpentry work. It helps me to shape framing members to fit inside the walls and floors of my 1930's vintage home where nothing is square or level. I use it when drywalling to straighten out bowed studs and ceiling joists, too. My craftsmanship has been improved greatly by owning this wonderful tool. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you're looking for a reliable random-orbit sander capable of fast, evenmaterial removal without bogging down, this sander is a great choice. Porter-Cable'selectronic, variable-speed, 3.7 amp motor provides 2,500 to 6,000 orbits per minute. Theright-angled gearing system allows it to maintain consistent speeds even when you'repressing it down into the work. For a sander capable of fast material removal, thisproduct offers relatively little vibration, and the large barrel grip allows users to hold andoperate the tool without excessive hand fatigue. While this sander uses hook-and-looppaper--making it easy and reliable to change paper--an adhesive-paper pad is alsoavailable. This variable-speed model can work with either eight- or five-hole paper, comes equipped for dust collection, and can attach to standard 1-1/2- or 2-1/2-inchvacuum hoses. The full kit includes the 6-inch sander, hook-and-loop pad, adust-collection hood, a dust-collection hose, a hose adapter, 12-grit hook-and-loop sandpaper, and a heavy-duty plastic carrying case. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars reliable and good performer
I use this sander primarily to strip paint of the bottom of my sailboat and it works great. Vacuum dust collection is required by the marina and this works fine as well. However, there will still be dust in the air and the combination of sander and vacuum is noisy so a good dust mask and ear plugs should be used. I have been using the sander for 3 years and it has not given me any problems. I use mostly 60 and 80 grit disks which make the tool moderately aggressive at removing paint, but not enough to mar the surface. I also keep the variable speed setting at the highest level, so I have not found this feature very useful. The only drawbacks are that it is a little heavy for overhead use and the cord/vacuum hose makes it a little cumbersome to maneuver. If you are going to own just one sander, then this is the one to get. It is more aggressive than the pad type sander so that it can be used for moderate paint removal, but can also be used for delicate finish work as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sander
I recently purchased the PC 97366 6" Variable Speed Sander Kit with Dust Collection Hood. I read a review at Amazon indicating the dust collection was inadequate. In my experience the dust collection, while not perfect, is very good. I sanded the parts to make a cherry bookcase with my Ryobi RS-115 just before ordering the 97366. Even though the RS-115 has built in dust collection, as usual, I had dust all over the shop. I just finished sanding an identical bookcase with the 97366. There is very little dust in my shop from this job. The dust hood is definitely worthwhile. I suspect the variation in dust collection with the 97366 is due to the shop vacuum attached to it. If you have a good shop vacuum with a clean filter, you should collect almost all the dust. I did note, however, that I get better dust collection with sanding pads that have the holes, rather than those without holes. Porter Cable says you can use pads without holes, and you can. But, I don't think dust collection is as good.

While it certainly is not as aggressive as my large Porter Cable belt sander, it is very fast. I did not find control to be a problem although it is a little more difficult to use than the RS-115. It is bigger, heavier, and supplies much more torque.

To change pads you invert the sander and peel off the old pad. This would be much easier if the manufacturer would put a flat base on the top so the sander would remain steady when inverted. (Are you reading this Porter Cable?) But, then, that also goes for any sander I have ever used or seen.

i now seldom use my belt sander.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied !
It's another of the collection of tools we use to make our renovation projects easier. Picked it because of our mostly good experience with Porter Cable. It does awesome work. And, the dust collection system, which is absolutely essential for our work, just about does away with dust completely. That's a great plus for indoor projects such as refinishing wall paneling, hardwood, etc., where you can't have dust going all over the house and you'd really rather not have to tape up plastic everywhere.

Unlike other writers, we've found the dust collection system to be great when hooked to our portable vacuums. We also like the hook and loop and have had zero problems with it, despite this sander's power. It's a big improvement over our five inch sanders for larger projects. That one inch difference is unbelievable. We're going to buy more of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tool for car detailing
This is the exact same package as Griots Garage sells for $50 more. All you need is a couple of foam polishing pads from Meguiars or any auto detailing site and you are ready to polish your car to perfection. Just check out this link for complete directions on how to use one of these things and you will be polishing like a pro in a day! There is NO COMPARISON to the job this tool will do and hand work. Not even close.
