1-0 out of 5 stars Just plain junk
I purchased a set of these chisels and I wish I hadn't. They are very poorly machined and the metal is very weak. I am seriously thinking about taking all six chisels and throwing them in the trash, box and all. They are no where close to being flat on the back. And to be honest there just not worth the two hours or better you will take to lap the back. Anyone thinking of bying these chisels should just save there money. I here Lie-Neilsen is comeing out with high quailty set. For all of those people(myself included) a word of advice, don't by cheap tools save your money and by somthing that will last. It will be cheaper in the long run!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
I agree with the reviewer below that these chisels are a good value. Using the Veritas sharpening jig and flat Arkansas stones, I have been able to get a good edge on these chisels. Like most chisels, they will require sharpening out of the box to get a truly sharp edge. These are not high quality Japanese woodworking chisels (which cost about three times as much), but properly sharpened they will be serviceable for all but the most demanding woodworkers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Set - But skip the box
These are my first set of chisels - I don't know how much I'll use them, so I want to keep the purchase cost reasonable. They arrived with an o.k. edge, but needed a little cleanup. The handles feel really solid. As for the box, well I really like to keep my stuff organized, so I like to get promo sets that come with cases - but this box was pretty [...]...The clasp on the front doesn't latch and the inside is just a flimsy molded polystyrene insert(same plastic they make disposable cold drink cups out of). I recommend getting one of the other sets without the box and either hanging them on pegboard or putting them in a toolbox drawer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap chisels
Don't be fooled. This chisels are not worth their price. I was given a set two years ago. I never used them until three months ago. I was using my old reliable set. I took this chisels out of the box and went to hone them. Come to find out, the still is severly deformed. The facets are totally out of place and you can not get a smooth bevel on them---There's NO WAY you could double bevel these. I reground them myself to as square as possible. No sooner than I did that, the half inch chisel started breaking the corners! I did not blue the steel as I use a Tormek sharpening system. Plus, I was using them without a mallet---by hand! Cheap metal, cheap craftsmanship, poor quality!

4-0 out of 5 stars Have served me well
I bought a set of these chisels about 10 years ago. With a proper shapening, they have served me as well as I could expect. The hold an edge, they don't chip, and they do what they are supposed to

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the 4 piece set!
These chisels are great for what they are and offer an excellent value (price vs. quality). I have not noticed a significant concavity / convexity on the backs of the 2 chisels I've had for the past several years (1" & 3/4"). They do seem to need sharpening with a great deal of regularity but it's easy to get a nice edge in no time (probably as one reviewer suggested, due to the comparitive softness). Very nice heft and comfortable to work with for extended periods of time. Don't hit these hard with a metal hammer and then expect them to be comfortable when doing hand cleanout because I've found the plastic does deform somewhat. I guess that's why I'm buying a new 4 piece set.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Utility Chisels
I have a Marples 1 1/4 inch chisel. The back didn't take too long to flatten, considering the width (it was slightly convex). The edge does blunt more quickly than my set of expensive chisels, so I don't use it to chop dovetails in hard or abrasive wood. It does a nice job as a utlity chisel - cleaning up glue joints, light trimming, etc., so I don't have to use my good chisels for those jobs. It's long blade is a big advantage over hardware store chisels. I'm about to buy a set.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bumpy Backs
The first step in preparing a chisel for use is flattening the back. Most of the chisels in the set of blue chips I purchased were very difficult to flatten. Concavity is not a problem. It is convexity that is vexing. Unfortunately, these chisels were very convex. I am still trying to flatten the one inch size. I should have sent the bumpy ones back for replacements or refund. I wonder what ever happened to quality control.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice chisels that require a bit of maintenance
These chisels are inexpensive and very comfortable to hold. They're great for general use around the house but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who's seriously interested in fine woodworking. My main gripe with these chisels is that they get dull too quickly. I think the metal is too soft. You'll have to hone them quite often in order to keep them sharp. ... Read more

An excellent quality smoothing plane for the price. Fit and finish out of the box was very good. The sole was flat. The iron itself only needed a few strokes on a bench stone to get the edge sharp. 2-0 out of 5 stars nice plane but handles are too small
This is a nice plane but the rear handle is too small for my hand. That makes it uncomfortable to use. I will try to find a larger handle or it will make a nice gift for a smaller person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan Baronsky
I purchased this plane, although not form amazon.com so frustratingly I did pay a little over the odds. It is an excellent hand tool. It is not difficult to set up, just follow the instructions, it is also imperative that the tool is honed before use. I just resharpened mine a few days ago and I have to say I still can not get over how good it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just received record 05rxxxjack plane
I have been reading alot about planes and, I figured I would try this one out. The price seemed very reasonible, you can spend anywhere upto and over $300.00 for a plane. I only took it out of the box last night and just ran it over afew scraps of wood. I haven't been able to really set it up properly or I should say the way it is explained in various wood publications..So far it appears tobe a good tool and works pretty well i'll write alittle more when I get more experience with this plane. I have been working with wood for the last 20 years but have only gotten into pretty heavy the last two years and I have always avoided working with a plane once you get it down it should go ok ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Plane for the money
I am a novice woodworker who can't justify at this moment in time a Lie-Nielsen or any of that type. I have found a real gem in this plane. I especially like the adjustable mouth that allows fine to coarse cutting. I am no expert, I just know this is one fine tool. I have planed pine, oak, and maple, with great results. As long as the blade is kept very sharp the results were a smooth finish. I found the blade to be well made. It takes little effort to hone, and holds an edge. I found the adjustments to be easy to use and the sole plate was right on the money. I may move up someday to a more meticulously machined plane, but for right now I am quite content with this one. In fact I am looking foreard to purchasing the Record 9 1/2.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent plane with a little work!
This is a great little plane for the first time purchaser and is a servicable tool for the professional as well.
You will need to sharpen the blade to get the best service and cut from the tool. You may have to polish the sole a little. (If you do not want to go these extra steps to make your tool work properly just purchase one of the better block planes).
The lateral adjustment lever works well, as does the depth adjuster.
The only criticism I have about this plane is the blade cover locking knob. It is a little difficult to tighten and untighten due to it's placement under the palm rest. Otherwise, this is a good little plane and is a fun tool which, once sharpened properly, will have you buying pine boards just to hear the "whoosh" as you plane a slice of wood off. I bought both the 60 1/2 and the 9 1/2. The 60 1/2 will do everything the 9 1/2 will do and more! I also own five other mid-priced block planes and this is my favorite! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars well-designed block plane
This is a well-designed and well-made block plane. It fits my hand nicely and all the adjustment screws and levers operate smoothly. Like with any new plane, you should find hone the plane iron before you use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Little Plane
This is a fabulous little handplane. The adjustment for depth of cut is very fine, making small adjustments very easy. The adjustable mouth eliminates the need for a chip breaker and allows for fine, light shavings, or heavier duty ones if required. The plane is a snap to set up and use. If you know how to sharpen the iron well, this plane will do just about anything with ease. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stands up to use OR abuse
Buy this one, quickly, while you still can get a gen-yoo-wine, made-by-Brits-in-Sheffield vise for a Taiwanese price. The Record 52-1/2 is a far better device than expected for a little over a hundred bucks. It has tremendous capacity, is heckforstrong, and is fast-acting without mystical half-turn gymnastics. It has a nice, long-lasting blue paint finish, and decent metal finishes as well. You can tighten it up with a whomping mallet mash if you care to, and it will take it and smile back at you. The quick-release lever is a pure gem in operation.

This champion of a vise deserves a big, heavy bench to support it in the fashion in which it would like to become accustomed. Be aware that mounting procedures will affect your long-term enjoyment greatly. If your bench is edged, mounting Big Blue behind the edging gives you a seamless inside face; this is superior to recessing it into the bench side. You also should fabricate an outside jaw pad of hardwood. Magnetic pads are available for this vise, but they look crummy on a nice bench, can't be made from scraps and won't last as long as maple ones. A useful, plain-English installation guide is included.

Waxing the screw and guides is recommended. Don't use oil, grease or WD40, all of which will accumulate crud rapidly.

Drawbacks are few: you won't get the full jaw width after facing the jaws (you don't need it anyway); it weighs about an Imperial ton (only a disadvantage if your bench is lightish); and it will torque its works a bit if you rachet down hard with a piece of stock held vertically in one side. This last peccadillo is curable by the expedient of shimming the opposite side with a board of equal thickness. Final drawback is the dog, which is good hard steel -- just the thing to punch divots in your workpieces. Make a new one out of hardwood (takes 15 minutes or so if you're slow like me), and your troubles are over. Alternatively, you can use cauls between the dog and your workpieces.

The ONLY reason I'll never buy another Record 52-1/2 is that a guy really only needs one -- and I'll never wear this one out. Nice to see well-made gear out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Woodworker¿s Vice
As with the majority of equipment manufactured by Record, you will find attention to detail and excellent quality. The 52-1/2 does not disappoint. The thread design on the clamp is very beefy and will withstand as much pressure as you can muster without the possibility of striping out. This is something you want find on the Taiwanese copycats. The ratio of handle turn to clamp movement is excellent allowing for incremental adjustment of clamping pressure without the fear of "over doing it". The adjustable top "dog" is great when used in conjunction with bench "dogs" resulting in even great clamping width capacities. The quick release feature is very helpful in quickly adjusting the jaw width without having to crank your arm off.

As mentioned in an earlier review, careful attention should be paid to adequately mount the vice. I anchored the vise in a 2" x 4" laminated workbench by rabbiting the rear vice clamp into the bottom of the workbench and then secured it with ¼" x 2 ½" lag bolts. I also attached a 12" long 2" x 4" to the front vice clamp. This gives me a wood-on-wood clamping surface to protect the surface of my projects.

This should be the first (and it will probably be the last) vise you consider or purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Woodworking
This is a good, strong vise that is easy to tighten and loosen. The lever swivels very smoothly and is large enough to give you a good grip. The overall design is excellent. The way the mounting holes are positioned, you can mount the vise on the edge of your workbench so it has a fairly low profile. This means that the vise is very unobtrusive, staying out of the way, yet providing access when you need it. The inside of the mouth is smooth. However, I taped some padding on it to make sure it doesn't damage wood. If you're a woodworker, this is the best kind of vise to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Record 52-1/2 woodworking vise
The Record 52-1/2 ED woodworking vise is a massive and very sturdy piece of equipment and requires an equally sturdy work bench in order to be used to its fullest potential. If the vise is mounted with the jaws about a half inch below the work surface (as is recommended) then the space 7 1/2 inches below the work surface must be open to allow for free movement of the guide bars and the torsion bar. The metal jaws need to have hardwood face plates add to protect your work. I used 3/4 inch hardwood for the face plates and held them in place with 1 inch wood screws. The Tool Crib catalog description says that the jaws are tapped to receive 8 mm countersink screws. This was not true with my vise. It had two 6.5 mm holes drilled in each jaw but the holes were not tapped nor were they countersunk. This being the case it is necessary to add the face plates before mounting the vise. I mounted the vise, positioned the face plates, clamped them in position, unmounted the vise, inserted the 4 one inch wood screws and remounted the vise. The vise is well made, works great and I'm quite happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Record Vise: Best Buy!
The record vises, models 52, 52 1/2, and 53 are the best buy long term in a woodworking vise. Strong, relilient to breakage and warping, they are made for indistrial use. Some time must be spent in the mounting requirements, so read the directions before you start to cobble up your bench. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs a little tweaking
After reading the reviews I saw that Record was consistently ranked higher than its competitors. I agree, it's a quality product. Two small items, however: 1) the holes for attaching your wooden jaw faces are not threaded, and there is not room enough for a nut on the back of the bench-side jaw, so you'll need to cut your own threads (or mess with a magnetic setup). 2) the quick release must be pushed to the half way position to work best. If you push it too far, it appears to re-engage the threads and bind. Other than that, a very nice product; I'm well pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent vise
This vise was a most welcome addition to my workbench, all it took was a couple of wooden jaws , the gripping power is tremendous and the quick release mechanism works fine without being in the way. I recommend this vise to everybody that is looking for a quality product at a very reasonable price

5-0 out of 5 stars Great vice
If you have a hard time finding one of these, look no further. No, you won't find them at Lowes or Home Depot. This is a Record vice, a famous brand, but I could care less about brands, I can say it is well made, works great and does what its supposed to. The lever for fast release from the screw works great. Does not come with wood faces, you need to make your own, but if you're buying a wood working vice, that should not be a problem!!

This isn't the cheapest wood working vice, but then again quality never is the cheapest alternative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Built to last several lifetimes!
If you're in the market for a wood working vice, then your search is over... this is it! My first experience with a Record vise was nearly 25 years ago, and that vise is still today going strong; serving in day-to-day work without stopping! The vice requires a 3-1/2" thick tabletop (its not listed in the specs, but you should know this before ordering), that shouldn't be a problem if you have a professional type bench, however if you're expecting to mount it to something less, you'll need to provide some kind of wood blocking. The quick release lever isn't on my original, and in my opinion adds unnecessary complexity to the screw mechanism, and probably isn't nearly as strong since the holding power is provided with the assist of a small spring metal leaf, (although I'm sure the engineers at Record have tested it and proved that it will outlast anything else on the market!) I would have been content with just a basic screw mechanism.

One peculiarity, the adjustable dog doesn't sit flush with the jaws in the down position (it projects about a 1/4" of an inch) and sometimes gets in the way. Whether this is by design or manufacturing flaw is unknown - on the original it sits flush. Obviously, 20 seconds with a cut-off saw was all it took to fix this!

The only other complaints are as other have noted as well.... it *really* could use a stronger box for shipping (this is no joke! mine was almost busting through the bottom of the box!); an installation template would have been nice; a little more oil on the exposed metal parts (the one I received had some light surface rust on the jaw edges and rail guides); the holes for attaching wood to the jaws aren't threaded, (that was easily rectified with a tap set); they should have included the mounting hardware (I used 3" long x 1/2" dia. lag screws); and including a metal bench stop (to go with the dog!) would have been a nice addition as too!.

Overall you will not find a better woodworking vise at any price!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the vice. Hate the shipping
This is the best vice I have ever seen. The quick release works smoothly and is a must. The machine work and casting was expertly done. I recommend it to anyone that wants a heavy duty workworking vice. My first complaint is the shipping. When it arrived the box had a large hole in it(from being dropped I suppose). The handle is a solid steel bar but yet it was bent when it arrived. So either Record doesn't make their handles straight (doubtful) or somebody dropped it very hard. Anyway it still works fine but when you purchase a new tool it would be nice if it got to you with out being damaged. Also a template for installing it would have saved a lot of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Vise, BUT ...
The Record 53EX is a very heavy duty, well built vise. I like the quick release mechanism, the big metal handle, large size, and 15 inch capacity. But, an installation template would have been very helpful. Also, the screw holes for the user supplied face plates are not tapped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sturdy, Well Built Vise
I recently built a new workbench, and figured it would be nice to attach a Vise to the end of the top. So I choose this vise after looking through several vises. It is one of the largest vises available (both jaw width and opening depth). I am not sure it is any better for my uses than a smaller versions of a similar vise (Record 52ED and 52-1/2ED), but it is a great vise. The quick release mechanism works great and makes it a much easier to use. The vise is quite heavily built and will withstand plenty of abuse. It is so handy, I don't know how I got along without it. The only bad thing I can say, is that it was very poorly packaged when it arrived (it was placed in a cardboard box with some paper), but the vise is well enough built that it survived the journey just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "End All, Be All" bench vice.
When looking at bench vices I decided to go for the gold, and this Record 53E is deffinitely it. The real advantage it has over every other vice that I looked at is the 15" jaw opening. I can't believe the number of projects that I can fit in it! The "Quick Release" is fantastic. This vice is the first time that I've used it and I don't know how I ever lived without it. It is sooo much faster than the old crank method. I've got mine set up on a bench with slots for bench dogs and the system is really slick. I can easily clamp down long boards that I want to sand or route. Truely the Cadillac of bench vices. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not setting any records with this one
I have to agree with the other reviewer with regards to the
strength and stability of this stand. The biggest drawback
is that the tubes are round and there is just a single bolt
that you tighten against the interior tube. The design could
be improved by making the tubes square in cross-section (thus
eliminating the tendency to twist as you tighten the bolt) and/or
improving the height adjustment mechanism with something that
grabs the tube from both sides (instead of just jamming a bolt
up against one side). Also, the height adjustment bolt does
scratch the pretty blue paint. I just picked up a cheaper version
of this type of stand at Loews and it has square tubes. Even
though its height adjustment mechanism also has some problems, it
was considerably less expensive and therefore preferable. So
save your money and get a cheaper stand. This isn't as good
as Record's vices (I'm assuming this is the same company...?).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best quality
This stand uses a simple knob attached to a bolt that jams into the side of the tube. The bolt strips off the paint every time you use it. Plus there is a tendency for the tube to rotate when you set it. Further, I don't get a feeling of great strength with this mechanism. I would only recommend this stand if you want to set it at one height and leave it there for the life of the stand.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential For The One Man Shop
Being alone in my shop 98% of the time, the Record roller stand is an essential extra hand I need. I use the stand(s) to support long pieces of material while using my RAS, as a feed extension for my planer and table saw and sometimes just as an extra support while sanding long or awkward pieces. The use of one these units also add greater degree of personnel safety to any cutting operation dealing with long material. It also allow for cuts to be made more accurately.

The unit is constructed simply but, as with most Record products, it is constructed solidly. The roller is very smooth and rolls with little effort. The adjustable height via the thumbscrew works fine. The unit's base and roller are wide enough to prevent tipping even at full extension. The bonus of folding up and away allows the unit to be tucked neatly into a corner or hung on the wall. ... Read more
