Amazon.com Review

Whether you're new to spiral saws or an experienced pro, theRotozip Revolution is one tool you'll be happy to add to your arsenal.Solidly built and attractive, the Rotozip Revolution can cut throughvirtually any material cleanly and with greater accuracy than other, less maneuverable tools, such as jig saws or routers. The attached ZipMate allows you to cut through metal, masonry, and even stone withlittle effort. An easy-grip handle snaps off and locks on tight, whileonboard tool storage makes bit changes hassle-free. Two onpositions--one for continuous action and one for use with thetrigger--add to the overall convenience of the tool. And the pushbuttonspeed control lets you shift gears on the fly for jobs that requireadjustable rpm. --Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ROTOZIP Revolution saw w/ Zipmate
Tool cuts about anything as advertized. Care must be taken when installing bits to ensure small portion of smooth shank is visible (bits break easily otherwise). The 4.5 amp rating is actually 5 amp UL rating (notice comes with spiral saw). If you want to cut floor tiles you must buy the diamond zBLADE used by the Zipmate attachment (additional 19.99 to 24.95 depending on where you get it). No other way with this saw to cut floor tiles reliably.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tool, but not perfect.
This tool has come in very handy for me and my workers. It's been great for removing cracked ceramic tile in showers (using masonary disk), cutting stucco, etc. If you get one, make sure you ALWAYS wear safety goggles. The one time I didn't I had a piece of stucco hit my eyeball and it was extremely painful (am fortunate it hit the white part of the eye).

What I dislike about this tool is the on/off switch. It is so bad that I could see someone having an accident with it. The switch is a slippery piece of plastic that you have to pull to turn it on and it's not easy to get a grip on.

I also don't like the cheesy plastic case. The mfg. should include a metal case or at a minimum a quality plastic case.

I haven't had great luck with the bits (they always seem to break).

Even though there are a couple negative things about this tool, I would definitely buy it again. It has become indispensable to me and gets used regularly in renovating apartment units.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great home handyman tool
One of those tools you thought you might not need but are now darn glad you have. You'll wonder if this tool will help with pretty much every challenging cutting angle or clearance issue. Used the accessories almost from day 1, so the combo makes sense. No regrets.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the HOME user, it is a MUST have
Myself, I'm a lowly home owner. I bought this tool, because of it's maneuverability and speed with which it cuts. For roughing in flooring in my attic, it performed better than any tool I have ever owned. The power, cable and phonewires in my attic were easily managed by cutting a quarter inch deep trench in the 2x4's, such that the plywood wouldn't crush them. I then was able to freehand cut the plywood around the roofing supports. All said and done, I had my attic completely floored in about 3 hours. It would have taken several weekends of my time using conventional jigsaws, or hauling stuff up and down the ladder.

I cannot dispute the issues of the fan blade; I do not doubt that this happens with commercial use. However, for the home user it has not been a problem for me. I gave it 4 stars, instead of 5 stars for the simple reason that I agree with the commercial users. The fan should be able to withstand the temperatures the tool will generate in continuous use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Revolution design flaw
I have been using the Revolution spiral cut tool for a few months in a professional capacity, previously using the Dremel for drywall cuts. The Revolution shaft lock has be redesigned which is good news, the old design would fall apart with minimal useage. I am on my third Revolution now within 5 months. Its a great for cutting drywall, however if you use the tool for harder materials such as plywood, hardyboard, OSB, or particle board expect a drastically shortened tool life. I use this tool because it will not crack or split Formica. Heat generated while cutting, travels up the shaft and begins to melt the plastic fan blade. With the fan's tight tolerance to the housing, it begins to drag causing more noise and quicker failure from wobble at 30,000 rpm. A few countertop sink cutouts is all this tool can handle in 3/4" particle board before failure, with changing the bit 3 or 4 times for each sink to insure a sharp bit. Maybe if you could allow the tool to cool for 30 minutes for every 5 minutes of cutting, it would last longer, however this in impractical with a customer standing over you. And there is only a one year warranty from original purchase. Since they replace the tool and not repair it, the warranty should begin a new period. This would force them into incorporating a billet aluminum fan blade more quickly. Its hell to be at customers and have a tool failure. Maybe I should become a dealer and carry a few Revolutions in stock on my truck and perhaps even bill the customer for a new tool each time i use it, under consumables. ALWAYS WEAR EAR PLUGS AND SAFETY GLASSES WHILE USING THIS TOOL. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Waaay over priced, @ list price.
A body would have to have more bucks than IQ points to pay the list price of $$ for this device. I got a RZ Kit for my B'day and what a tool. I'm happy as a pig in. The Plunge Router attachment does work exceptionally well and far more manuverable that the bulky standard routers I own. They are destined for table installations. I recommend the RZ kit with the router attachment and zip blade/cut off attachment head included. Although RZ could have brightened the packaged accessories with a couple additional 1/4" router bits; to give a new owner the pleasures of rounding off or smoothing up a couple plank edges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Helper
I had been using my Roto zip as a freehand router with the original base and couldn't get the results I needed as a professional. Now with this new base, I get excellant results every time. No need to drag out the full size router each time I have a couple of hinge mortises to do. It is easy to hold, even when mortising jambs in place, freehand. Worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet!
I love this attachment!!! it's like taking all the power of the Rotozip and putting it in this tiny little package that you can use anywhere! it's really cool for detailing stuff. I used it to engrave into plaques for my daughter, and to cut some PVC under my sink where i couldn't fit a larger tool! It was great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Rotozip is prepared to give you the shaft.
= Rotozip is prepared to give you the shaft. And you need it.
Reviewer: Oneal Smith from LONE PINE, CA. United States of America
Since you are here reading this review (smart move) you must have some flex-shaft on your mind. I did. I had to have it. Do you know of someone that got a rotozip for some holiday gift and they have used it like... twice? This WILL put an end to that!

It came down to this flex shaft on my rotozip or the Dremel 3956-02 Variable Speed MultiPro Super Kit. Something about that R-Zip monster hanging there in the shop, ready, even eager to be fired up on command. No more digging out the dremmel case and searching for the right collett (4 sizes you know) for the uselessly, varied-size bits. Now it is 1/16 to 1/8 with one collet and it tightens with one quick twist. I understand that there is a chuck available but I haven't seen a need for it yet.

S P E E D ! Horsepower...
Man, hold on tight. My older R-zip is ON or OFF so I had to rig up a speed control. Yet another sign that I must be getting old.

What it didn't have:
I would like to have seen a simple wire pin (see: model rocket launch key) included to lock the shaft. Fixed and forgiven in 2 minutes. Also maybe a little tube of (you guessed it...) shaft lube for some slow night a few months down the road. I also made a wire hanger to safely suspend the whole rig. That, you would think, they would consider necessary... to keep the kinks out -hang um high.

BUY IT ! Thanks for asking. Come up and climb! OS ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed at what it¿s intended for.
Here's my review of the RotoZip Rebel, broken down into three main sections:

Design/quality
I wish every tool was designed and built as well as the Rebel. Someone put a lot of thought into this gizmo. The handle and depth gauge both detach and re-attach in seconds, and are very solid when they're on. The wrench to tighten the chuck and adjust the depth slider stores in the front of the handle. A compartment in the back of the handle stores an ample number of bits. The motor fan exhausts to the front of the tool, and there is a slide diverter that adjusts to blow the sawdust away from your eyes. Everything is very solid and well built. The cord is a higher-quality super flexible type and is a full 10 feet long. You can actually find an outlet in reach most of the time without hunting up an extension cord. Imagine that.

What about the switch?
The power switch is a three-position pull type, which personally, I have no problems with. Dremel tools and hand grinders have similar on/off switches. The handle detaches, the barrel (body) is made to be gripped 360 degrees, so where are you going to put a constant pressure switch? Pay attention while you're running it, keep a good grip on it (more on that) and everything will be fine. Tool manufacturers can't possible engineer their products to be safe under any circumstances, especially if the operator is complacent.

Function
There is no doubt in my mind that for cutting holes in drywall/paneling/OSB/etc. the RotoZip is easily superior to any tool previously available. Once you get the hang of it, it will flat smoke any recip (jig, etc.) saw out there. It does have the quirk of liking to pull (torque steer, if you will) certain directions, but if you are mindful of this and KEEP A FIRM GRIP ON IT, it's not a problem. Wallboard is where the Rebel really shines, but I have cut thicker material with very good results. I cut all the holes for my deck railing with it (1" material) without a problem, and I've even cut holes in solid wood up to 3" thick by cutting in stages, increasing the depth. The neat thing about this tool is that it's a lot like a reciprocating saw (Sawzall) in that it succeeds admirably in certain uses where most everything else won't. It's also a lot like a Sawzall in that it's not really made for detail work. If you buy one for super-fine scrollwork, you're probably going to be disappointed. For what it's intended to do though, the RotoZip is king of its realm.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably unsafe!!!
Unlike a drill, circular saw, etc, that uses a "trigger" mechanism to start it, the Rotozip uses a "pull switch" on the back of the unit. A trigger would allow the unit to stop automatically if you lost control and dropped it. However, Rotozip's pull switch makes you pull on it to start, then push it to stop. There's no safety mechanism to shut it off if you lose control. That means if you drop it while using it, you'd better get out of the way quick or expect to get a severe injury.

In addition, I've had my Rotozip for about a year and use it only occasionally because of its hazards. While using it recently, much to my horror I discovered that the pull switch failed altogether! The only way I could stop it was to very carefully kick the extension cord out of the outlet! Considering I was using a circular diamond blade at the time, this was very dangerous indeed! How did this thing get to the market?

DO NOT BUY THE ROTOZIP!!! IT'S TOO UNSAFE!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for drywall O.K. for other things
No one can dispute. This is a great drywall cutter. Electrical boxes are truly a breeze , as are door and window openings. Other companies have tried to copy the design , but no one has improved on it. I like the extra bit and wrench storage on the tool. It's kind of easy to open the bit cover and lose the bits though. The commercials show the tool cutting perfect lines in a variety of materials. It takes A LOT of practice to cut freehand with this thing. The spinning bit causes the tool to climb off of the cut line. For rough cuts it works O.K. For finish cuts forget it. For any soft material like wood or plastic you are far better off with a jig saw. For hard materials like tile it's a little better. Jigs help a lot for cutting cleaner lines. Just don't push it very hard or you'll be putting in a new bit every thirty seconds. For drywall this is a must have tool. For woodworking or hobby I think its usefulness is very marginal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Try using the right bit !!!!
I'm sure the guy with the plaster wall was using the wrong bit. If your cutting plaster you need to use the carbide bit. dahhh... I own a home theater design & installation company. When we switched to Rotozips from hand saws we saved 1-2 hours a day on installations. Its GREAT for everything from drywall to cutting out cabinet backs to fit larger TVs. As we speak I'm working in my own house which has plaster walls and I'm using it for everything from speakers to lighting. Tip: Always use layout lines to cut on. Don't try to "wing it" with no lines.
As far as noise... only an {fool} would use any power tool with out hearing protection. Why do you think they sell earplugs? I checked the noise level with a sound lever meter and my shop vac makes more noise.
I consider it one of the most valuable tools on my truck after my cordless drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I own my own drywall company. I have purchased similar tools from Dewalt, Ryobi, Dremel because I run two hanging crews and not only need another tool cut out tool for my other crew, but also thought they may be an upgrade. I have to say that none of the other tools were nearly as durable. They all had good attributes to them but all have quit working and my original Rotozip has just kept chugging along. I would recomend this product to anyone who is going to really work their cut out tool. I use mine almost every day and it still cuts clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for removing old tile
I had some exceedingly nasty tile to remove - the grout was more like stucco. A fair amount of research led me to the Grout Grabber.

After struggling with a Grout Grabber for a few hours and getting a moderate amount of work done, a buddy recommended a Rotozip, and loaned me his. A quick trip to the hardware store for a diamond blade and I was in business. The Rotozip did the trick. It was fast, went through the grout like my circular saw goes through wood. It also went through the chicken wire that was holding the mortar in place, throwing off some lovely (but harmless) sparks.

Note that I didn't use the carbide grout bit, which I tried and found to be useless. I used a circular diamond blade intended for tile, cement and so forth. Note as well that this blade isn't recommended for the speed of the cheaper Rotozip, but that's what I had and it worked.

Anyway, the combination of the Rotozip RTM01 with RotoZip ZM101 and the Dry Diamond blade worked like a dream. There is another Rotozip with adjustable speed that should work as well and perhaps be safer.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
I am a long time wood worker and I hhave never seen such a bad tool on the market. I bought thisd thinking that I could take to the job site and get alot of use out of it. But I can not cut anything out nicly with it amd it needs a belt sander to clean the cut up on the cut part. The saw is not good for anything. If I have a hard time using it how it simeone going to use it with no woodworking back round. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not sure why it is so hard to find.
It took me a long time to find this item. But I have been very satisfied with it. I can't imagine using a tool like this with a power cord. The cordless option is outstanding. Especially for drywall wall and ceiling work. I've also used it for some very tricky trim work, trick or odd flooring cuts, and even the occassional finished carpentry. Having the right bits is everyting. So get yourself some extra bits of various kinds to have in the toolbox for when you need them. My only criticism is that the height guide is easily bent, and just not made to the same quality as the tool. It can eat batteries, so keep them charged or buy extras.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I have found that the Roto Zip battery opperated, in not worth the money. I have use mine a few times on drywall and it gets very sluggish very quickly. The batteries last a very short time. I was using it on a small job and the thing just stopped. It made horrible grinding sounds and chugged then stopped. I have email the company but haven't heard from them yet. I don't think it was worth the [money] I paid for it. Buy another tool!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Customer Care
I have this tool which I use everyday (1 yr.)in the line of work I perform as a electrician. I work building new homes doing the final finishes (lighting and switches etc..). I used the tool everyday cutting out vinyl siding and some sheet rock work. The tool has gotten dirty and is need of some maintenance so I will be sending my tool back to ROTOZIP for this. If they take care of this then I will give it a "5". I will write back!! Remember this tool is only battery operated 12v DC not 120v AC!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissatisfied with quality and price of bits.
Think of buying a Rotozip? Don't waste your money! I can't tell you how much I like mine, because I can't keep the bits from breaking long enough to find out how much I like it. I went through all the bits that came with it and then went out to buy another bit to finish the job I had started, I paid for one bit at Sears, it lasted 2 minutes and it broke. I can't afford to use the Rotozip at that expense. Yes, I went counter clockwise and used the right bit for the right project. Believe me, no one wanted this product to work more than me, at its cost + shipping and handling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great item, but pricey here...
Check it out at WildwoodDesigns.com instead. The SCS01 is listed there for only $99.99. Great tool and shouldn't be without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Paint removal
I live in a rental home where the bathroom baseboard paint was about 30 layers deep and about 15 years old (I say was, because after my Rotozip experience, its allll gone).

We tried several things to remove the paint with little or no luck. A friend of mine recently purchased a Rotozip tool kit, so off to his house I went.

I selected the 120 grit disk because of the rougher look and feel of the disk. When I started sanding the old, thick, globby, runny paint the Rotozip disk was like a wild animal, devouring the paint down to the bare wood.

Fast, controllable and efficient...... Just add a Rotozip kit to my Christmas wishlist Ma.

Then I started to look at the spots where the Landlord had done a poor job with the Drywall mud, a little zip here and a zip there, smooth and ready for paint. If a 120 grit pad works this well, I cant wait to try the rest.

I reccomend this product to all. ... Read more
