Amazon.com Review

Durably constructed with a fully enclosed 1/3-horsepower induction motor and a die-cast aluminum base to dampen vibration, Delta's combination belt/disc sanding station is designed to make removing both small and large amounts of material a quick and easy operation. To round corners and smooth over large curves, the 6-inch disc sander spins quietly at 3,100 rpm. Its cohort, the versatile 36-by-4-inch belt, cycles 2,000 square feet per minute. In tests, we found it quickly adjusted from horizontal to vertical and locked easily into position for use on 180-degree curves and cutouts. The tool-free tracking knob makes it easy to maintain belt alignment, and the cast-aluminum worktable bevels 45 degrees to accommodate angles on either surface. We found changing sandpaper on both tools relatively easy and appreciated the integral 2-1/4-inch port for dust collection. --Justin Paul ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap price cheap quality
I got this unit to sand 2 x 4 cedar for a play set. I got the unit home and desovered that half the wholes for the guards were not threaded. So I spent an hour tapping them and assembling the guards. Then I plugged it in and.....nothing.
I returned it and got a new unit, within 10min the belt was slipping and a strong smell of burning rubber was smelled. then I had to hand turn the belt when switching on the unit to get it started.
It has a cheap clutch and a cheap motor. save your money and buy somthing better like the Model 31-695 (That is what I plan on doing)

2-0 out of 5 stars Delta 31-460 4" Belt/6" Disc Sander
What you get with this tool is a 4x36 belt sander and a 6" aluminum disc sander. The disc sander plate on my machine was so badly warped that I just threw it out. So you are basically getting this machine for the belt sander.

This is a fair compromise, except that there is a flaw in the design that prevents one from fully using the 4x36" belt size. The clamping boss that holds the sander table and drum turnarounds extends above the surface of the table (like 1-1/4"). This means you cannot sand large flat areas over about 7 inches deep. You must saw off the boss and remount the entire table to utilize the machine like you had planned when you bought a stationary belt sander of this size.

When you do so, you realize through the screws that won't unscrew (and which you drill out one after another) that the machine was not meant to be serviced.

The drive belt pulley on the primary drum is plastic. Mine is warped, so the belt only stays on with excessive belt tension....

The motor is not sealed, has no overload protection, is clearly underpowered, and its body casting is from some other machine design, bought by Delta's procurement people.... This is too bad since it means you cannot replace the motor. The included sanding belt is as poorly made as I have seen, so plan to get something better.

This all said, after rebuilding, the machine works. I don't exactly trust the plastic drive-belt pulley, nor do I like resetting my 40 Amp shop breaker when the machine bogs down. This is an overpriced tool that was not thoughtfully designed or carefully manufactured. This machine proves that Delta is more of a marketing company than a tool company--they got me to buy the thing, and for this I am regretful.

4-0 out of 5 stars In agreement, this is a nice home unit
I have had one of these for many years and use it mostly 3/4 pine projects (some red oak and maple also). It handles the job it was designed for well (home use), if you try to push the machine it just won't handle it well (and you my want a stronger machine for that). The belt sizes and disc size (along with the 1/3 hp motor) dictates the maximum stock sizes you should try to use with it. If you want to use it to sharpen tools instead of a grinder, it will do that also. Just be sure to remove all sawdust before you do, the metal sparks and filings could ignite inside the sander. The sander is also pretty quiet for its type (at least quieter than the competitors) and also operates smoother. It would be nice if Delta offered a second table as an inexpensive option.

3-0 out of 5 stars great for small home workshop
This particular belt/disc sander is worth what you pay for it. It's a nice addition to a small home workshop. It sands small items decent and is helpful if you build projects by the dozen like I do. Unless you have the tool attached to a piece of 3/4" plywood and have it secured to a workbench, it has a tendency to wander and vibrate a bit. The removable tilt table is a very nice option. Overall, it is a quality Delta tool and just like anything else, you get what you pay for. For the price and quality, I would recommend it, but try one first; you may want to spend a little more and upgrade.

3-0 out of 5 stars great to use as a grinder
This sander is light duty. But not too bad of a tool. One of the best uses for it is to use it instead of a grinder. The slower speed really make it well suited to grinding and shaping edges. And for polishing work. Use the blue zirconia belts and you will be able to grind like crazy. I found the disc is only good for steel that is soft as it is too fast for wood or hardened steel. I have ground almost 100 plane irons and other tools on mine and it is stilll going. I use it atlest a hour a day. For the price it is a good little tool. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
I got one of these yesterday and immediately took it back. I am a woodworker by hobby and needed to do particular sanding. I found the packaging excellent, but that's where it stops. Yes it sands. The verticle plate in back of the 1" belt was 1/4 inch to the left and cannot be adjusted. It was also bent back 15 degrees and not flush to the belt. The throat is not deep, so, sanding a part of a piece of wood longer that a 10 inches cannot be done. Metal parts were jagged and dangerous, especially the little tables. The miter gauge with the disk sander table is small and wobbled in the miter slot and therefore useless for any specific angle of cut. All in all a very cheesy product. If a straight line or a 90 degree angle is of any interest to a user, leave this product on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I purchased this sander about three months ago and have had excellent performance come from it. I am amazed at the amount of accessories that are available for this machine. There are many things available for it-from a felt buffing belt to all the little grinding and sanding attatchments that can be used for the accessory flexible shaft, which I own and am very pleased with. The removable belt platen is a very desirable feature, as it allows the user to sand in tight or odd shaped places. The only complaint I have about it is that when I got it home and opened the package, the "body" of the sander was bent, though I am inclined to believe that the problem arose in shipping and handling or at the home improvement store. I ended up returning it for another one that apparently had been stabbed by a forklift(really assuring), but since I took it out of the box and assembled it (which took less than 10 minutes because of the detailed instructions), I have had optimum performance out of it(and as a tip, just use the included hex-wrench in place of a padlock on the switch if you aren't very concerned about young kids). And also, hook a dust collector up to it, as it creates lots of fine dust. Just the quality you'd expect from Delta! Happy woodworking!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Versitile 1" belt sander.
I bought a Delta 1" belt sander ten years ago when I started to build my first airplane. This tool has more applications than you can ever imagine. It shapes pieces, sharpens tools, grinds metal and makes pieces fit. Ten years later, and after completing a second airplane, the bearings are getting a little noisy, but it still works. The price of this machine is so reasonable, that I am buying another with the disc sander which will make it just that much more useful. I'll sell the old one in a yard sale and make someone else aware of this great tool. Buy one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 120 grit on the Delta makes for a rough finish
Don't expect to get the same results with 120 on the Delta that you would with a ROS. It removes a reasonable amount of stock but it doesn't compare to the speed or quality of finish that a planer would provide.

I would expect about the only use for 120 grit would be the removal of a significant amount of material on a wide panel. Something that would not fit in a planer. Otherwise go with the planer then finish off with 220 on the Delta. ... Read more

The truth is we smirked when we read Delta's description of this tool as a "finishing machine." "Please," we thought, "it's a sander." But here we stand, apologizing for our smugness. This is, indeed, a finishing machine that will handle virtually all of your finishing jobs and even help with the cleanup. Start up the heavy-duty, 1-1/2 hp, 230-volt motor and try out the 2100 rpm disc sander and the 3030 rpm belt unit, perfect for both metal- and woodworkers. A huge range of jobs can be done at this machine by adding sanding drums, abrasive flap wheels, buffing wheels, flexshafts and other accessories. We love the large table size on both sanders, and check out the surface—they're specially ribbed to block any distortion. The belt table tilts up to 45 degrees out and 20 degrees in, and the disc table tilts 45 degrees out for uncompromised angle finishing. Have an awkward workpiece? No problem. The belt will operate at any angle—vertically, horizontally or anywhere in between. Its 4-inch dust port works with the integrated 5-micron bag, or you can hook it up to a standard 4-inch dust collection system. With its integrated mobile base, it's the perfect addition to virtually any professional shop, large or small.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Machine
Let's face it, for under fifty bucks, I wasn't expecting much in a benchtop belt sander, but this little baby filled my needs perfectly. It came out of the box and its styrofoam surround needing only to bolt on the table. The table is attached and adjusted using a nifty heavy duty spring loaded bolt. It came with an allen wrench to adjust the 90 degree stop on the table, but a quick check with my tri square showed no such adjustment was necessary. After fitting the table to the machine, I finished reading the instruction booklet and clicked the switch. It started verrrry slowly but after a minute it fired up to full speed. I turned it on and off and found this was only a one time nuissance, as it roared to life in nano-seconds on the second start. I used it to hone a curved corner on a pair of 8/4 table legs and the 100 grit belt (included) cut through the hard maple like a champ. The 1/5 HP motor is all the power this machine needs. It did make a sort of rat-a-tat-tat sound so I disassembled the side and found that by adjusting the belt tension the noise went away. I ordered four packaged of different grit paper at the same time as the machine, and ... took a couple weeks to stock all the grits before shipping. However, the machine was shipped separately and arrived in a few days.

I see Delta maybe discontinuing this machine in favor of the 1/4HP combination belt/disk sander. I saw that machine at ... for seventy bucks and wasn't impressed by the flimsy appearance. ... Read more
