This little sander has its place
We own 6 different electric sanders, ranging from big belt sanders to this little guy. Each is particularly suited for its own task. This one works great sanding down trim and door casings. The nice thing about it is that it will not scuff up the wall or the trim when the head comes in contact with it. We used it and a mouse sander to do the same job. The mouse sander was far more powerful, but it would scuff the heck out of the wall. This Dremel was slower but it was far better able to get into the nooks on the trim. Overall it is a good detail sander and will work well for the small jobs. Do not expect it to take on huge projects. Ours came with a plastic dust collector which had a broken plastic piece right out of the box.
The next project this little guy will be used on is some rocking chairs that have been waiting for a year to be sanded down. This will be the perfect tool to sand the spindles.
Just the ticket
I'll save you from the painful story on why I needed a tool like this.
I searched this forum and was looking at the PC 944VS. It got pretty poor ratings. The Dremel 6000 looked like a good choice based on the reviews and the price was hard to argue with. I'll admit I've only used it on a single project so far but I am very impressed.
I cut some 2½" cherry brackets on the bandsaw. The design had a concave arch and some inside corners that would have required hours by hand to sand any other way. I used the Dremel to finish these details, going from the rough saw cut to a glass smooth finish. It did take a little time, but progress was consistent through all of the grades of sand paper .
Though the motion of the pad seems linear, I did get swirl marks when pressed down too hard. "Let the tool do the work", as they say is the answer with this little number.
Overall I am very happy with this purchase.
The only negative notes are:
Lack of readily available sanding tubes or pads. For some reason Lowes only carries the 80 & 120 grit versions of each. Amazon only carries the assortment pack.
It seems pretty loud for the size and the amount of work it's doing.
A Real Craftsman's Tool
This tool is awesome. I have yet to come across a profile I could not sand. Saves tons of time vs. hand sanding. Very inexpensive for what it will do. Wish I had purchased this many, many projects ago!
A Great Find!
I have used a few detail sanders but this one is the best. The contours allow you to work well in a wide range of situations. I like it for cleaning up minor, hard to reach spots after assembly. It is not fast but it gets the job done. Sanding tubes are expensive but last a long time as you rotate them. It is loud, but quite effective. A really good addition to any shop and at $50, a bargain.
Huge help for Finish carpentry like shaping of moldings
When people have no other choices but buying consumable factory accessories like special sanding papers from most power tool companies, we have to set our mind to keep spending fair amount of money for future use. But this Dremel contour sander was a delightful surprize! Although sanding paper replacements are not cheap, the cost per sanding job is very low. It is very economical sanding system because you can rotate the sanding paper rolls every bit part of an inch and the worn out part like sanding tip/edge will be off from the pressure area. You can enjoy efficient sanding with new edge/narrow area at every slight turns - Very clever! I could easily use a sanding paper for sharp edge more than twenty times (twenty edge wear outs). Although the product is excellent, one complaint is there is no info like accessory part number for dust collection attachement. Accessory order form shows all those numbers and the price but no name no description. The Dremel.com does not show the part either. I guess have to call them after Holidays.
