Amazon.com Review

This is a workhorse of a saw, and it definitely lives up to theSkil name (the company that invented these saws in the first place). This latest version of the famous Skil 77 takes all the power andtorque the original is known for and packs it into a lightweightmagnesium housing, bringing it down near the weight range of sidewindersaws. Grasping it by both handles, the saw balances well, and thenotches in the shoe give a good guide for 90- and 45-degree cuts. Ithas a 2-3/8-inch depth of cut at 90 degrees, and 1-15/16 inches at 45degrees. We liked the quick blade height adjustment mechanism and theangled wrench, which helps prevent skinned knuckles during bladechanges. We couldn't feel any difference in performance between thisSkil's 13 amp motor and others drawing 15 amps. Be prepared for aslight twist when you first flip the switch, but after that, it's asmooth machine made right here in the U.S. --Kris Jensen-VanHeste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biggest , baddest , beefy, bulletproof, best bang for the buck
No body but no body builds a better saw than the people who invented the thing so long ago. Yeah , other companies make fine tools. But none better than the skill mag 77. Dewalt tried to copy the design , it was a flop. So they came up with their new hypoid framing saw that doesn't even compare for durability. Milwaukee makes an even bigger wormdrive with a 15 amp motor . It's an also ran. Makita made a super duper hypoid gear saw that stripped gears like they were going out of style. I'll admit that their new one is a lot better than the first but it's still not a skil.Unless you live on the east coast , when you drive by a construction site, 9 times out of 10 you're going to see a worm drive skil saw. There are reasons why .They are the most durable. They run the smoothest. They are the most powerful. I conducted a test of several framing saws. I ran all available wormdrive and hypoid gear saws as well as the Porter Cable blade left 15 amp saw with marathon blades down 16' 2x douglas fir as fast as I could without tripping a breaker. My partner timed me. The skil was the fastest by over a second. Then we switced places. Same result. At the time we had no preference for brand. In fact , we were hoping the new Dewalt would be the best ripping saw. With its bright yellow color and its 15 amp motor, we thought it might be. Not! The 13 amp skil blew everything away. I must say we were impressed. I continue to be to this day. The mag 77 might be heavy but not overly so. In some instances the weight is an advantage. if you are cutting close to the ground , tilt the lumber so the saw is going down. It will glide through with no effort. The length of the saw is also a plus . When crosscutting sheet goods it is much easier to go all the way across from one side without changing your position. The in line design also makes it easier to follow a straight mark on your material. The depth markings are a nice feature for a rough reference point. I have a few minor caveats though . The aluminum shoe isn't as tough as the steel on the older saw. The cords crack pretty bad just past the strain relief. I don't know of many power tool cords that don't though. I think my Bosch and Hilti cords are in tact. If you want a 15 amp motor, a blade brake, a rafter hook or a lightweight package , this is not your saw. If you want the most powerful smoothest running most durable workhorse of a saw then look no further than the skil 77 original or lighter mag 77.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a weekend warrior saw!
I didn't do any research when I bought this saw. I didn't have to because everyone I knew then was already using it. It is two pounds lighter than its predecessor but still a heavy saw.
I recommend the Tool hangers Unlimited 21087T Original Worm Drive Saw Hanger for this saw because it comes in handy to hang the saw on a joist or whatever. I use the same hanger on my Hitachi framing nailer.
The blade that comes with the saw last about an hour (a slight exaggeration) but that is the way it is with most blades shipped with new saws, just chuck it and you're in business.
If this is a first time saw purchase you might note that this saw has a lot of torque and actually twist in your hand and toward your body on start up if you are right handed. Not such a big deal unless you pen the guard up like most everyone does with this saw.
Dewault has what they think to be a superior saw and I am seeing it used in the trades a little now. I have tried it and I liked it but who knows if it has the durability of this saw?
The weak point of this saw is its guide or shoe if you prefer to call it that. You have to be careful not to bend it when you sit it down or load it into the van or truck. I did examine the shoe on the Dewault but it appeared to be the same weak design.
However the Mag is by far the best saw I have owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars why would you buy something other than this
I will keep it short simple my company runs 45 - 50 of these saws every day i wouldnt buy anything other than this saw its light powerful and never dies if you keep a sharp blade and lots of oil in it

5-0 out of 5 stars Skil HD77M
I really like this saw. The blade is on the left, it is lighter than the other wormdrive Skil makes, and I can't get it to bog down or burn up. I have a Dewalt framing saw that I have used for years and love, but I like this one better. I do recommend the saw hanger, though. It is a nice accessory. You really can't go wrong with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Thinking
Skil cornered this market long ago, undisputed.

I would not buy any other manufacturer's 7 1/4" saw!

Remember to change the oil

5-0 out of 5 stars It will make you a better carpenter
This saw made me a better carpenter. Combined with a Freud Diablo II blade, this saw handles 2 x dimension lumber so easily that you can make incredibly smooth and straight cuts. When cutting a 45 degrees through a 2 x 10, I cut a straighter line cutting freehand with this saw then with a "homeowner" quality level saw and a straight edge. The reason is the even power. You can get into a very smooth rhythm of feed rate based on the saw's power. It's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on some other saw
I own several other circ saws, including a Makita hypoid (Their name for worm drive) They don't even come close. If you can't spend the $190.00 for one of these saws buy a $50.00 black and decker and use a good Marathon blade in it, because everything else in my opinion is in the same class and you would be wasting the extra money. If it was possible to rate this saw with 10 stars I would. The black bag gets dirty easily and the saw doesn't fit with the blade installed, but who cares about that stuff!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEAST!
Like the title of my review implies, I consider this saw to be the animal of my collection. I've ripped through all types of wood with it as well as concrete slabs. It's alot heavier than a sidewinder saw, but definetly worth it's weight in gold. Here's a tip for all of you prospective buyers: Be sure and blow out all of the dust and debris that get all over the saw with some compressed air whenever you get the chance. If you don't, it will stall out on you. As long as you keep it clean and lubed, it should out live you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a fine Swiss Watch
I bought the Mag-77 as a Christmas gift for our son, who is the Summa Cum Laude graduate from Auburn University's Building Science program this year. We also got him a fine Swiss pocket watch. The two go together in the craftsmanship, utility, ruggedness, and the ability to last a lifetime. The toughness of the Mag-77, stump-pulling motor, precision and light weight will be treasured for a generation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed!
Although this little gem is quite heavy compared to other circular saws, it's power more than makes up. This thing is unstoppable! The unique handle position takes some getting used to, as it feels more like you are pushing the saw along the workpiece, but I've found the wormdrive easier to use than other saws that have the handle located more "on top" of the unit. The on/off switch is very handy too.

I did some work last winter (during a snowstorm) and the saw does turn kinda slow until the oil warms up. That got in the way for intermittent use, when the oil got cold between every cut. This was the case when I used it for cutting laminate flooring. Seems like overkill, but DAMN the cuts were clean!!
I'm a heavy DIYer and I disagree, for my case, that it's not suited. Someone who just wants to cut a two-by once in a while definitely wouldn't need this saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super saws-all!
I own a Porter-Cable 15 amp (which I love) and one of these. I've had the P-C over a year and this Skil, which I just got a couple days ago, blows the Porter Cable away! I'm not a contractor, but I understand fully why contractors out West love them. This is one beefy machine with tons of power to cut anything. I tried twisting it in a cut to test it and it only slowed a little, while the P-C nearly stops! A great buy for DIY-er or professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool
The Skil HD77 can truely be considered heavy duty. I live in the southeast US (...where it never really gets cold...) and can say that the HD77 is unstoppable. The advantages of any worm drive saw are torque (cutting power), noise (not so much high rpm motor whine), and longevity (could outlast the owner). The primary disadvantage is weight - the saw is heavy. Skil invented this type of saw and still carries the lion's share of the market. There are other worm drive saws available, and I'm sure that they are all great, but there is something to be said for a product that has remained basically unchanged for 60+ years. If you can handle the weight, you will be more than pleased with the saw. I would buy it again - but I don't think I'll ever need to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong
I bought this saw to cut some concrete to expand my patio. It
performed flawlessly and even better than expected. Even though
I'm a DIY'er you won't go wrong buying this tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars The industry standard in Canadian construction!
I earn an income visiting construction sites. More rough carpenters use this circular saw then any other (including the Skil HD77M).

In March of this year, I bought the HD77 used ...to replace a low-end Black & Decker which was purchased new for $50 in 1981.

For DIY projects around the house, the heavy-duty, smooth operating HD77 has yet to disappoint. Initially, I had to get used to the weight and the ergonomics. The cuts were smooth with no irritating startup kickback. Plywood and sonotubes; no problem.

With the increasingly harsh Toronto area winters, the oil in the HD77 requires to be room temperature warm prior to using the saw in the great outdoors of ours.

With proper maintenance and care, this saw will be a vital and permanent tool for rough carpentry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I will never use my old heavy circular saw again
I'm not a professional contractor or woodworker. I just use my circular saw to cut plywood and sometimes 2 x 4's for home improvement projects. I bought this tool for one reason, it's light. I would have bought it from Amazon, but it was on back order for months, so I picked one up from Home Depot (and actually paid more! Tax and shipping would have been free from Amazon!)
I love this saw for a lot of different reasons. It's light. It's quiet. After I set up the saw angles, It cuts great. The motor is off to the right, so I can see the blade while I'm cutting. And it's the least expensive and lightest of all the other corded trim saws on the market. And contrary to the other reviewer, I think the mfg. quality of the saw is good.

The only problem I'm having now is finding non Skill, 5-1/2" carbide tip blades with a 1/2" arbor.

I love this little saw. I'm going to buy one for my dad for his birthday from Amazon now that it looks like they have them back in stock. (no, I don't work for Amazon, or Skill...)

4-0 out of 5 stars It's great but it's loud!
This saw was purchased 5 years ago for its compactness to fit into a kit box. I did work in art direction & set construction on films at that time.

I'm right handed so I love having the blade on the left for visibility of the cut. Be sure to keep your left hand clear!! Saws intended for homeowners have the blade on the right for greater safety.

I found the motor housing to be in the way when using a guide to rip or crosscut plywood sheets. This was also mentioned by a previous reviewer.

My major complaint is that this saw is very LOUD compared to the equivalent Porter Cable model. (I don't know if it's just my saw - there aren't that many hours on it. ) I would probably choose the P-C if I had to do it again. BTW I do wear ear protection.

This saw's benefits are compact size, light weight and power.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best saw ever
I was given this saw a few years ago, by my father for a christmas present. Since i'am a contractor it comes in really handy. This saw goes places where with a right handed saw, it seems to be virtually impossible. I would highly recommend this product to homeowners and contractors alike. I plan to keep mine as long as it lasts, so far for 4 years with everyday use.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really like this saw.
I've always thought a smaller, lighter more compact circular saw would be better for the type of work that I do. Now that my saw has arrived, I realize how right I was.

This is really one easy to use saw. I bolted on a new carbide blade and found that I no longer dread jobs that call for a circular saw. I doubt that I'll ever pick up my 7 1/4 circular saw again.

This saw has plenty of power for cross cutting 2 x 8 and is very easy to control when cutting plywood panels. I appreciate the left hand blade which makes it much easier to control exactly where one is cutting. The blade guard moves out of the way easily and the entire saw, from the long heavy duty cord to the saw housing, speaks quality.

Home Depot carries 5 1/2 inch carbide tipped circular saw blades with the required 1/2 inch arbor for just under $10 so keeping myself in saw blades will not be a problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still going strong after 22 yesrs.
I bought this saw 22 years ago and have used it since. I am a professional electrician and use a circular saw from time to time on the job for wood braces and supports. The saw has never been serviced or repaired. Some 7 years ago, I bought a Freud carbide blade from Home Depot. That's all I've done to it, and it keeps on going and going. When it no longer works, I'll get another. But, at the rate that it last and last, who knows when that will be. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Made in Mexico
Item arrived non-working closest service center is 1200 miles away no quality check done

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value, But a Couple Flaws
Overall I'm satisfied with this saw for the price. It does two things most circular saws can't: cuts a 60 degree bevel in 2x's, and cuts 6x's in 2 passes. The power, stability, and lack of run-out/wobble in this saw make for very nice cuts. It's a brute to handle, but so are 7 1/4" worm saws.
Unfortunately, there are two shortcomings that cost it a star. First, there are no adjustment stops for the 0 and 45 degree bevel. Second, the foot on mine is out of alignment with the blade by almost 1/8", making it impossible to cut against a rip board. I've used Skill circular saws for years so I'm not surprised - I just hoped they might have done better with this model. On the positive side, Skill stuck with a steel foot which doesn't scratch or drag on lumber and like aluminum does. The only decent aluminum foot I've ever used was the nickle plated Hitachi (which appears to have been discontinued). Wake up tool industry! We have stainless clad aluminum cookware - why can't we get a stainless clad aluminum saw foot?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great saw
Having owned this saw for 10 years and working in construction, loghome building, and timberframing I have found this saw to be very reliable. It has the torque to power thru any wood or log necessary for the job at hand. The saw is versatile and can be used with different accessories made for it. I would definitely recommend this saw to anyone for any type of construction.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO worries, no complaints
I'm not a very frequent user of this saw, but it's been about a year since I got this it, so I feel qualified to write a review.

I don't have much to say and that's a good thing. This saw has given me no problems and has done a great job on concrete, lumber, tree branches (no chain saw )-: ), etc. I guess it's a little on the heavy side, but I appreciate that it isn't easy to break (I've "experimented" with dropping it once or twice).

4-0 out of 5 stars 4x4 cutter ? Not!!!
First thing to know about this saw is despite what the other review says it will NOT cut a 4x4 in one pass! I was skeptical about his claim yet I bought it anyway because why would he lie? Maybe he just doesn't use the tools before he reviews them? Also this size saw has far less selection of blades in stock at most hardware stores and they cost more on average then the 7 1/4" blades.

That is the bad. On the good side this saw just feels right when you use it. The power comes up smoothly when you pull the trigger and it just purs beautifully through the wood. Though I wouldn't want to work above my head with this saw all day because of it's weight, I used it for several minutes overhead without any real discomfort.

I will keep this saw but if I had it to do again I would get the Mag 77 and enjoy the lower initial price, graeter blade selection, and slightly lighter weight. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless: blade clamp has 4-5 degree play
Even with TWO edge clamps (both sides of shoe), cut pulls 4-5 degrees to the left with all materials and all blades, even 3/4" flush cut blade, until blade binds or breaks. This on simple straight cuts--wouldn't dare try it at an angle or on scroll work. Will try to get my money back and pay twice for quality I should have bought in the first place.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of features, where's the accuracy?
The main problem with this saw is that the blade isn't held firmly enough by the tool-free clamp to make an accurate cut. I realize that this saw costs about half of what a good DeWalt or Porter Cable jig saw costs, but come on! Make that only 1/3 the cost of a good saw since Lowes is currently blowing these dogs out for $45.

The lightweight shoe has a sloppy feel to it, which only hurts your ability to make a decent cut. You don't so much adjust the angle of the base as you lock a pin into one of several pre-stamped holes at pre-set angles, and it feels very imprecise.

The sight light is supposed to cast a shadow where the blade is headed, but I can't bring myself to trust it. I'm thinking of just cutting off the wire that makes the shadow so I at least get the benefit of the light. The selector that lets you choose whether the dust gets blown away or sucked up through the vacum port is O.K.

I haven't found the 360 degree blade rotation feature to be helpful. I'm used to turning the entire saw when making fine cuts, and this feature just seems to make you use two hands do the work of one hand. Since the radius of a cut you can make is limited by the width of the blade I'm not sure why Skil went to the effort to include this feature.

I'm giving this saw a two star rating because I haven't used it a lot and haven't yet hurt myself with it. (...)

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheaply Made and Dangerous to Use
I bought this saw new and was very disappointed. The no-tool blade release is great except it does not hold the blade securely when in use. When I tried to cut at a 45-degree bevel, the foot plate exposes so much blade it is very dangerous if the blade should ever break. The plate is also difficult to adjust. The rip guide bent when I tried to rip a straight piece. Forget trying to use the rip guide on any bevel. When trying to cut curves, the blade easily comes out of the "wheel guide" and the blade then bends and wonders off line. The trigger on-off switch is too easily accidently turned on. All in all, I am thoroughly unimpressed with this Skil jigsaw and wish that I had never bought the thing. I thought I was getting a good saw for the reasonable price of $69.00. I guess you do get what you pay for.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a deal for 69 Bucks, for straight cuts
Yeah I bought the saw, I said for 69 bucks, you'd have to be crazy to buy the 140 dollar one. Then I used it to cut out some circles in plywood at an angle, because I was making trim plates for AC pipes in the rafters. The blade never fell out, but I never got a positive lock on it, and finally it went crooked. The guide plate was funky, trying to adjust it 45 degrees. I messed with it for 1/2 and hour, and then went to the book. Book was vague.

I found that you have to be crazy to buy this saw, unless you want to injure yourself, like lose your fingers, or have blade fly in your face.

The saw is perfect if you want to cut straight. Circular saw does this better and faster. Marketing is perfect, I believed every word on the box and bought it. This saw is an 5 amp accident waiting to happen. I value my eyes, face and fingers, I'll pay another 70 bucks for that protection.

1-0 out of 5 stars a hazard
first of all, like someone already mentioned 2 finger start button is dangerous. second, the blade fell out while i was cutting twice, and i wasn't putting to much pressure on it either. just an accident waiting to happen. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fair saw as long as you dont use it
I was excited about the sight light to help make accurate cuts. That is a good feature, but overall this saw isn't worth the money. The height adjustment broke the second time I adjusted it and now I'm stuck using it for plywood only. No more 2x4's for this saw. It does cut fairly well though and is comfortable to use. For a circular saw it is fairly accurate and easy to cut straight lines, but just don't adjust it or it will break. The case is also a joke. It does not fit in the case easily. My advice is to spend a few extra dollars and get a real saw from makita, dewalt, or porter-cable.

5-0 out of 5 stars More bang for your buck!
First and foremost, do your homework. If you are planning on making your living with a circular saw being one of your major tools, you might want to choose something a bit beefier. However, if you are a homeowner/occasional user, this saw is great! I would buy it a hundred times over.

After a good deal of research, I settled on this brand and model. My needs are not that great. Brand-wise, Skilsaw has always been known for good, economical saws. Model-wise, the 5700 compares nicely to some of the big names, but at half (or more) of the price.

My first project with the saw was trimming some 5/4 rough-cut oak to square it up. With a straight edge run length wise (over 10'), the 5700 sliced like butter! Now, keep in mind, that this was after I put in a different blade. Like the other reviews say, buy a different blade! The one in the box is, well... junk. I bought a Freud Diablo and it makes for easy work on whatever your project is.

Here are some pro's and con's:
PRO:
+ The saw is light. It doesn't take much to operate it.
+ The boot seems to be flat and true.
+ The "Site-light" is a nice bonus if your shop isn't well lit.
+ The rubber grips feel great, plus add just enough grip for greater control.
+ Plenty of power.

CON:
- The boot could be a bit bigger.
- The case is a touch whimpy, as it is plastic. (Though many of today's circ. saws are.)
... I can't think of any others!

Hope this review helps you in your decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars great saw, great price
This tool has great feel, both because it is light and has the rubber grips. the sight line is great and the front flip guide helps greatly in maintaining a straight cut, at both 90- and 45-degrees. Has plenty of power for whatever I need. The case is plastic, and the latches are flimsy, but it is still servicable for the unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this little saw
I've been a building contractor for 25 years and I've always used heavy-duty worm gear saws, but I bought this saw for my daughter when I helped her remodel her condo. I found I liked it better than my own saw for most work. No, I wouldn't recommend it for a tradesman or for heavy framing, but for a homeowner it's terrific. I love the site light. Had no trouble cutting straight lines, cutting at an angle, notching, whatever. I just ordered a second one - for my son. I'll probably be borrowing it all the time, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Skill 5700 - Good Saw, needs adjustment
Skill has a known defect on this saw. The Depth adjustment lever is made of soft plastic, which strips out very easily. I used my 5700 for only a few days before the lever broke. Just call Skil and they will send you a replacement (re-engineered) lever which should do the job and last much longer.

Overall, i like the saw very much. I used it to build a deck, cutting easily through pressure treated lumber (used to notch out 4x4 posts and trim 2x6's to size). I found that the saw is accurate, if you adujust the sights prior to usage. The instruction manual tells you how to do this, all you need is a screwdriver. The site light is very useful, and the soft grip handles make the saw easy to control, even through kickback. Replaced my 30 year old skil saw with this one. ... Read more

There's a lot to like here: 12 amps of power in a super lightweight but rugged body. We like the rear handle and the left-blade design; we felt like we had a great line of sight. The aluminum foot is smooth and moves the tool nicely, even over a rough workpiece. No complaints in the performance department from us: It's a hungry little saw, but because of its light weight, it was really easy to control, and that was a nice surprise. Partly that's because of the nice wide front handle and its placement for the perfect balance. It's plenty hearty enough for the contractor and perfect for the homeowner. Just remember, when buying blades, you've got a diamond arbor. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Drop from 7 1/4 to 6 1/2 makes big difference
As a builder for 40 years I've used all of the saws out there: 16 inch beam saws, worm drives, sidewinders even chain saws. The 6 1/2 inch Skil is quicker and more comfortable to use for the proper work load. I've used it for interior finish work, paneling and exterior finish work, siding, fascia. The smaller Skil is more responsive and easier to handle. If you have to raise and lower a saw one hundred plus times a day you soon appreciate this saw. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An all around great Jig Saw
This is the first jig saw i have owned, so i have nothing to compare it too. Everything i have tried to cut with it, it cut with ease.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great products, poor constuction
At first, I was very impressed with this saw... it could do anything! It was exactly what I needed for my small projects. However, after just four months, It BROKE!! The part that you insert the blade into snapped off!! Fortunately, This product comes with a good warranty, and I got it fixed for free!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent jigsaw for homeowner!
I have owned this jigsaw for over a year. It operates smoothly and vibration is nil. Power is excellent. Great features. Blade stays straight on curves with little if any tilt. I thought it might not be all that durable until it fell 6 feet from a shelf to a concrete floor and had NO damage. I own a number of Milwaukee tools, all of which are excellent, and would just love a Milwaukee 6266 jigsaw, but this saw is so good that I can't excuse getting rid of it for the Milwaukee. Very hard to beat for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lotsa power for one of the little leaguers
While you may not want to take this guy to the construction site it does find a very useful place around the home and my shop. Perfect for cutting through various woods and sheet metal due to its speed settings and power adjuster its a great all around saw to have around.

The speed control allows for finesse or brute strength, depending on what mood your in, and so far has done everything I have asked it to do i.e. just finished cutting various sizes of pine for a series of shelves for my wife and cut a number of holes into some 20 gauge sheet metal for a little project of my own this weekend.

The fact that it allows for quick changing of the blades, due to the fact that is does not take a screw or chuck to hold the blade in place, it is also a pleasure to use. The weight is well balanced and is not to heavy to be tiresome but is not so light as to make it seem "cheap".

Once again this is a tool that I can joyfully recommend as it has been a pleasure to use and has also performed above what I expected from a jigsaw for this price. Highly recommended for those small projects or what not around the home or shop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tool-less blade changing makes all the difference
Skill makes two different models under this number. The one shown here features the "Switchblade" tool-less blade changing system, which makes changing a worn or broken blade a simple 5 second operation. This is extremely usefull for those of us who spend a lot of time with the jigsaw, and especially if you tend to work with harder woods which will wear your blades out quicker.

The 4445 has all the power you need for continuous use and provides that power with a tolerably low level of vibration, allowing more use without developing numb or tired hands.

With the blade orbit adjustments and the variable speed settings, this jigsaw can tackle cuts through materials from cedar to hardwoods, and even metal work without overworking the tool. I've used a lot of jigsaws, but this is my favorite yet. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still going...
I bought this saw about 3 years ago for a Christmas project. I didn't figure on using it much after that, but over the years I've put it to weekly use. I've used it on everything from 2x fir to 1x oak and it has handled it all very well. I use the high quality Bosch blades on mine and it really makes a difference. Maybe some day this saw will wear out and I'll get a high-end model, but it doesn't show any signs of wearing out. It's a good saw for $...

4-0 out of 5 stars On hell of a punch without burning a hole in your wallet
I originally bought this saw to cut holes in my computer for extra fans. Skeptical at first with this cheap price but when i tried it, i was amazed that it can cut clean holes and pretty much anything i wanted through metal. It's got more power than you think! Quite comfortable and easy to use too. I dont have a lot of power tools nor experience, but with saw doesnt require much experience. Just pick it up power it on and go. I did a few projects with wood and it cuts through wood cleanly and quickly. I love this tool, never going back to a hand saw or hack saw ever. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price
I bought this [for a reasonable price], easily the most affordable reciprocating saw... It felt comfortable carrying it as it is well contoured for your forward hand and back trigger fingers. Changing the blade was a pain with the hex key. I use it to trim trees and bushes primarily. With the Ugly blade, it works just fine for this purpose. It still feels as heavy as the more powerful 10-12 amp models offered by competitors, however, and there is some pretty heavy vibration during use. I haven't used many others though, so I don't know how the vibration is relative to them. Overall, a good product for its price. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Skil's Classic series variable-speed orbital jig saw is one of our favorites among the saws designed for the do-it-yourselfer. The saw has a 4 amp motor that provides plenty of power, cutting with minimal vibration. It also has a variable-speed selector dial, which is handy, but not really the same as a variable-speed trigger (found on more expensive saws). You do get five orbital-action settings, however, which is great, especially when you want to make faster, more aggressive cuts (many consumer-grade saws offer only an up-and-down stroke). Do-it-yourselfers looking for a solid jig saw for occasional home projects can't go wrong. --Jon Groebner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Skil 4470-44 Classic Series Variable Speed Orbital Jigsaw
This top of the line jigsaw provides versatility that every homeowner or carpenter needs for little money out of the pocket. The scrolling feature enables you to cut intricate patterns with ease, while the orbital and variable speed functions provide the perfect blade action for your job. The chip shield and dust port allows you to keep dust off of the work piece and out of the air. The tilting foot allows you to make extremely accurate bevels and miters, and the most handy feature, the Switchblade quick change blade system allows blade changes to take only seconds. If you are searching for one of the best jigsaws on the market for under $, you will never feel as much power and versatility as you will with the Skil 4470-44 Classic Series Variable Speed Orbital Jigsaw.

1-0 out of 5 stars NEED A STRAIGHT CUTTING JIGSAW-THIS ISN'T IT!
Despite my new 4470 having a world of neat and nifty features and looking great, the bottom line for any jigsaw, is one that can cut straight. It is at that point, where this Skil gets off the train. It absolutely will not cut straight, with anything but the thinnest of materials. The blade immediately starts drifting off on a journey to the left. One must literally turn the entire saw to the left, about 10 degrees, to compensate and attempt a straight cut. I called Skil and on this saw, they offer a "silent" two year, no questions asked, replacement policy. What does that tell you? Do yourself a favor, skip all the Skil "bells and whistles" and low price and buy a Makita, Bosch, Porter Cable or Hitachi and save yourself a lot of aggrevation. My new Makita is on the way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of features, but poor quality
When I tried to cut a straight line I had to twist the saw 20 degrees to cut straight. I used a straight edge and the blade started flexing in towards the straight edge, making a very crooked cut. The slide was straight and I even had a friend try it, he had the same results. This is my first jigsaw purchase and I may not know alot about them, but I don't think this is how they are supposed to work.

1-0 out of 5 stars BLAH!!
I bought this saw for home use and had incredible difficulty cutting a straight line through 3/4" plywood (even with a fence). The saw is very light weight and seems flimsy when trying to cut. It tended to pull to one side and was hard to get a line of sight correctly. When I finally got it to cut a straight line I noticed the saw was at an angle and the base was crooked. After messing with the base to get it straight, I still had the same problem. The blower works but it all ends up in your face. Spend the extra money for a better saw!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Have not found a better deal yet!
If you are looking for a great saw with plenty of power that won't set you back a hundred bucks this is it. I have found this jigsaw to be excellent when it comes time to work. The ability to change the orbital action and the speed make for a very customizable cut. If it were my choice I would put this saw right up with there worm drive saw as the the best tools that skil makes. ... Read more
