Works great and a great tool for the price.
After reading all the previous reviews of this tool, I was a little hesitant but decided to purchase it anyway since I was not ready to buy a dedicated mortiser. I needed to make tenon and mortise joints (my first ever) in hard maple for a children's play table. As in the previous reviews, the case is clearly not meant for this tool (but I use it anyway to keep the tool "somewhere"). Set up was very easy on a Delta 11-990 drill press however with the adjustment of the table, fence, etc. I found it easiest to set up the chisel, then hold a straight edge on the tool to make the fence parallel (cutting and fine tuning the tenons later to match the mortises). The workpiece hold down worked well however the two arms to hold the workpiece to the fence would not clear the 2.25 square table legs requiring clamps (or strong fingers) to hold the piece to the fence. I've made about 150 1.25 inch deep plunges with the 1/4 inch chisel into the hard maple without any difficulty. Some tips (some of which I read elsewhere but probably have contributed to the ability to make so may cuts without a tool break): Drill speed was set slow (1100 RPM for 1/4 inch chisel); plunges were made "every other position" so the tool was always cutting 4 or 2 sides which is supposed to reduce the bending of the tool (and therefore the breaking of the tool); "pecking" was used to clear the chips (a small air nozzle would really be helpful); adjusting the hold down clamp as close to the workpiece as possible to keep from bending the tool during the retract. Based on the other reviews, I was expecting to have to purchase spare drills and the local store where I purchased the attachment carried them but 2 drills were nearly 50% the cost of the entire attachment! I didn't buy the spares and luckily, didn't need them. A great tool for the price!

Keep this attachment in perspective
I have mixed feelings about this tool. Here's my pros and cons:

Pro:
Cheap - compared to a dedicated mortiser.

Fits the drill press nicely - once it's set up, it works well

Cons:
Compared to a dedicated mortiser, this is junk. But it's also a fraction of the price. So for that reason, it's a good tool to start with

Some people complain about poor chisel quality and broken chisels. I havn't had that experience. I'm getting ready to cut a bunch of moritses in white oak though so maybe my opinion will change.

When it's set up, you can't use your drill press as a drill press. This is made worse because...

Setup is horrible. In order to cut a mortise (really a straight line of square holes) everything has to be square. This is tough because the chisel and fence need to be perpendicular and parallel. Tough because the table on the drill press moves side-to-side. Then the fence turns on the table. And the chisel rotates in the fixture. I'm planning on making a jig to help line everything up.

The bottom line is that it's good to start with. I like mine. I wish they had included a jig to help with the alignment.

fit???
i am still in iraq, i ordered this to go on my drill press, the dp-200 i know delta doesnt say that it fits, below some one said it did all in all ill just see if it doesnt someone let me know and i can send it to them for 10.00 less then amozon. i only gave it 3 stars for now but will update later

Good tool, but not worth buying
I bought this tool with my drill press a couple years ago and have hardly used it. There is nothing wrong with it, but I find that there are several things that stop me from using it more often. The first is the setup. It takes too long and is too awkward. Personally I'd rather pop in a forstener bit into my drill press and make several passes to achieve a very good mortise - although this doesn't work if you are doing a through mortise.

PROS:
* Does the job it states
* Much cheaper than a dedicated mortiser

CONS:
* Much too time consuming to set up
* Has a very hard time cutting through hardwoods
* Chisels seem to dull quickly

Fits 10" Benchtop Drill press too
I purchased this mortising attachment hoping it would fit an old Rockwell Delta drill press I just bought from an estate sale. Well, it didn't fit that but just for kicks I tried it on my previous drill press, a 10" Benchtop drill press from Delta model #DP200.

It fit like a charm and worked perfectly even though this is not one of the Delta models the instructions say that the mortising attachment fits. The chisels and bits are in perfect shape and sharp. I got clean, accurately spaced mortises on my first attempt.

The only reason I didn't give this product five stars is that one plastic handled threaded knob (used for fixing a workpiece holdown in place) was missing from the kit. I had another one the right size that fits my Delta Tenoning jig so it wasn't that much of a problem for me but still, it should have had all the parts when it was shipped. ... Read more

Get a grip
This low cost vise will hold whatever you need to drill a hole in on your drill press. The quick release lets you change pieces fast for repetitive drilling. Unfortunatly, it does not fit the Delta DP300 bench drill press .... It is much too large and the mounting holes do not line up...

Too large for 990 bench drill press
Although it's advertised to fit the Delta 990 press, it does not. The bolt holes in the vise simply will not line up square w/ the slots in the drill press table. I can c-clamp it to the table of the press and it works fine, but no one wants to have to make such basic compromises with a brand new tool. I'm going to return it and look for the 4" vise instead.
The two stars reflects my frustration with the false advertising, not the quality of the product. I agree with the prior reviewers regarding the quality.

better then expected
Seeing that this is a 6 inch vise for under thirty dollars I though there was a quality issue for it being so cheap. Not so. The quick release feature is very handy. And it's so big it doubles as a bench vise when I need it. If your drill press is big enough, get this vise.

Great addition to a Delta Drill Press
The Quick Release Vise is a great addition to any delta drill press. It makes drilling very easy and accurate, since you aren't trying to use clamps or your hands to hold onto wood or metal. This vise does not come with bolts to attach it to your drill press, you need to buy those from your local hardware store. Lenox Hole Saws
If you want to cut steel, Aluminum, or just about any metal this is the brand you want to use. Any hole saw can cut wood (so can these) but cutting steel is a different story. They are the longest lasting hole saws I have found on the market.

Disappointing. Needed to be returned
This mortising attachment was purchased for use with the Jet JDP 17MF drill press. The first project was making 3/4 inch mortises in hard maple. The drill press set ring replacement in the mortising attachment would not remain in place under the pressure needed to attempt the mortises in hard maple. This product may work on soft woods or with smaller sized mortise chisel/bits but don't try large cuts in hard woods.

The fence that comes with the attachment is not compatible with the Jet Drill Press Fence (709109). Quick modifications can be made so that the "hold-down" part of the attachment will attach to the fence, but when extracting the chisel/bit with hard wood, there is enough upward pressure to pull the t-tracks up away from the fence table.

After having tightened the set ring replacement as much as possible and still not having it hold, it may be tempting to over tighten the regular set ring when you remove the attachment to use the drill press in its standard form. CAREFULL. The set ring can crack and break if overly tightened.

A real disappoointment.

Great chisels, Mortiser needs work
Jet's mortiser is heavy, well machined cast iron but the hold downs were not bent to the same radius or cut to the same length. This doesn't effect how I use the system but it may be a consideration for anyone who will not develop their own hold down and fence system to work with their particular drill press.

The fence is a piece of hollow plastic that needs some better way of being clamped tight and square to the drill press's table. (Assuming you can square it with the chisel mounted in the chuck.)

I would suggest buying the chisels from Jet. They are better than the two 10 year old chisels I have from Delta. These chisels and bits are really sharp! Mine have stayed that way although I haven't pushed them through anything harder than soft maple.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time setting up this mortiser to your drill press. Make engraved markings on the drill press head and chuck "shoulder" to readily square the mortising attachment to the table and fence. I would recommend that you build your own fence system and hold downs.

Worked well with little fuss after initial puzzlement
I got the mortising attachment with my Jet 16 1/2" drill press. I have to admit that I was a bit stumped during the initial installation as there were no pictures of the installed unit and no narrative telling me that set ring on the basic drill press needed to be removed to install the chisel holder.

Once I got past the set ring issue things went well for me. However, you need a 6mm Allen wrench to remove the set ring and this is not included with either the drill press or the mortising attachment. I can see this being a real annoyance if you don't happen to own a 6mm Allen wrench.

On performance, the tool functioned very well right out of the box. The chisels were sharp with no noticeable burrs. I have cut test mortises in fir, pine and maple thus far and it does the job. I didn't notice excessive heat build up with this mortising attachment as I had with a ShopSmith attachment I used in the past. No smoke thus far!
