This single cartridge stainless steel fluoride removal water filter contains only a SIR-900 containing cartridge. The SIR-900 media is a synthetic adsorbent media that is highly selective for arsenic, fluoride and lead. Arsenic and fluoride removal is sensitive to pH, preferring an acidic pH. Lead removal is pH independent. The extremely high surface area and pore distribution gives this media the highest possible operating capacity and lowest possible leakage. It removes metals through a combination of adsorption and chemical reaction with the media; thus the removal is not dependent on ion exchange. Fluoride capacity is up to 11,000 ppm (parts per million) with effluent levels below 0.2 ppm from 10 ppm feed. The EPA maximum limit for fluoride is 4 ppm. Therefore, municipalities will not be adding more than 4 ppm to public drinking water - thus the feed is less than 10 ppm. High pH and high bicarbonate levels reduce capacity for fluoride and arsenic removal -- above 100 ppm bicarbonate will result in a reduction of capacity by 50%. Above 200 ppm the reduction is 75%. A BIG Difference
I just received this item today and immediately filled it up and let the water filter through. My water has a distinctive chlorine taste so I was anxious to see if I could tell a difference. After some water had filtered through I put some in a glass and tasted it. I thought I could tell a difference but just to make sure I also took some water straight from the faucet. There was a definite difference as far as the chlorine taste. I give this 4 stars since I just got it but Ill leave another review in a couple months since I did research on Consumer Reports online and they said the filter sometimes clogs up. I havent had the dispenser long enough to see if it does or not. Bottom line is if your water has a chlorine taste or smell I would definitely buy this product. Anything else I would send a sample away to have it tested before I bought this item but it has been tested to remove lead and chemicals such as mtbe and benzene plus others.

Much better than faucet-mount...
My wife and I have immensely enjoyed the wonderful water we get from our Pur filtration pitcher, which uses the same filters as this dispenser.

It's very convenient -- just pour water into the top, and it will, albeit slowly, drip through the filter. Over time, as the filter clogs, it will get slower, so the key is to add more water every time you pour more out -- that way, it's filtering while you are drinking and you aren't waiting.

It's actually much more convenient than the faucet-mount filters, which inevitably leak and get painfully slow and force you to wait...

Pur is better than Brita, by the way, if you get the Ultimate filters, which filter out cryptosporidium and giardia in addition to chemicals and gunk. Brita doesn't do that; it's an important feature if you have iffy water systems (Mexico, Russia) or a weak immune system...

Wonderful water!
After high bills & all the hassle of bottled water I gave this dispenser a try. It works great. I usually refill it before going to bed each night & have cold filterd water all day. I couldn't be happier!

Possibly the best way to get better tasting water.
Contrary to press sensationalism, most of us are NOT just one glass of water away from dying a horrible death. In most of the North American continent, you'd have to try pretty darn hard to catch anything lethal from municipal water. Problem is, the very reason our water is so safe is the very reason it might not taste that good.

Chlorination gets rid of most of the harmful little beasties but leaves behind a tell-tale odor and, in some cases, taste. Making coffee from heavily chlorinated water doesn't mask it. It just gives you Caffé di Clorox.

If you live in an area with such perfectly safe, perfectly unappetizing municipal water, the choices for better tasting water range from the overblown (a reverse osmosis system costing a few thousand to install and several hundred dollars a year to maintain) to the overpriced (delivered bottled water that most likely comes from the same source as your tap water) to the overly complicated (faucet mounted filters that get in the way when you're trying to do the dishes).

The ideal solution: a filtration device that's inexpensive to buy and maintain while remaining unobtrusive in operation. That perfectly describes the PUR Plus Dispenser.

Since each filter gives you about 40 gallons of filtered water, you're already way ahead of the cost of delivered bottled water. The filters cost a tad more than filters for a Brita pitcher or dispenser but the extra cost goes into the PUR filter's integrated Automatic Safety Monitor.

The monitor tells you without a doubt when it's time to replace the filter by counting the number of times the upper tray has been filled. For correct operation of the Automatic Safety Monitor, you refill the upper tray only after all of the water has passed through. Also, note that the same filter fits the much smaller capacity PUR Plus Pitcher. The Automatic Safety Monitor has 2 markers, a triangle and a circle, that indicate the end of its useful life. In the PUR Plus Dispenser, you replace the filter when the indicator lines up with the triangle mark, not the circle.

Thanks to a generously sized hand-hold at each end of the dispenser, filling it in a large kitchen sink is easy, as is carrying it to the refrigerator. Since it holds 2 gallons of water, the weight of a completely filled dispenser might be difficult for those with limited strength. The solution: refill the upper tray only when there's enough room in the lower tank to accommodate at least half of the filtered water.

The dispenser's tap is very durable. I've owned this dispenser for years and the tap shows no sign of coming loose or leaking. You can fill a single glass by pulling it just until the water starts to flow. To fill a pitcher, the tap can be pulled further to a locked position, then pushed back when the pitcher's full.

The PUR Plus Dispenser doesn't soften water, and to coffee connoisseurs, that's an advantage. Artificially softened water can make coffee taste strange because the molecular "spaces" left by the missing minerals are filled with undesirable flavor elements in the coffee. Instead, the PUR Plus Dispenser concentrates solely on the stuff you DON'T want in your water: chlorine, lead, asbestos, certain microbial contaminants. Any minerals that might already be present or added for improved taste are left in.

The PUR Plus dispenser also accepts the PUR Ultimate filter, providing the highest of level of filtration available.
