Amazon.com Review

For anyone who uses and works with tools enough to require a grinder, this model from Tormek is a well-designed, high-performance option. First and foremost, the Tormek Super Grind is water-cooled, removing one of the major obstacles to grinding: overheating your tool. With the water-cooling system, the wheel is able to turn at a much higher revolution, allowing for more-accurate, cleaner results. With its excellent bracket and clamp system, the Tormek works well with varying kinds and sizes of blades, but keep in mind that it will need additional accessory brackets for some tools. The grinder comes with an aluminum oxide grindstone and a leather honing wheel, and both connect to the motor at the same time so you won't have to switch wheels on the machine. The unit uses a 115-volt motor and reaches up to 90 rpm, which is plenty of power for most uses. In fact, we were impressed with the overall burliness of the tool--it's definitely intended for heavy-duty use. Only the on/off button was a little unwieldy, but it's well protected and should hold up. This Tormek is certainly a great machine for sharpening and finely honing gardening tools, woodworking tools, and more. An instruction video and book are included. --Jonathon Tudor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but labor-saving with fantastic results
Like many others that are in to woodworking, I have always looked upon sharpening as a necessary but evil chore.Drag out the stones. Drag out the water or oil.Search around for the damn jig to hold the chisel at the proper angle.Stroke, stroke, stroke. Now spend time on the honing. And sometimes, even when you thought you had done the best you could do, the thing still is not as sharp as you would like it to be.

Cue the Tormek.I looked for a long time at many sharpening machines and systems. I also spent time reading reviews on the various systems and methods out there. I love delta tools, and was about ready to get one of their sharpening centers when I suddenly went into overdrive about Tormek. So I said "what the hell" and bought what was being offered as a Cabinetmakers Package deal. I will never regret the decision.

All I have told my woodworking friends is that if you do not own a Tormek, then you are using dull tools!! Period. This baby can put an edge on a chisel that is truly scary. I have never been able to obtain such an edge and a polish by hand. Now I am confident that there are those of you out there who can and do obtain comparable results by hand, but for me, I'll leave it in the hands of the expert, which in this case is the machine. But a few more jigs...hell...buy them all over time. don't feed the dog for a few weeks, or go to cloth diapers for the kid...just save a few bucks and get to sharpening. I have already saved money by sharpening my own planer and joiner knives several times, and you know how expensive those knives can be, and how active woodworking can eat 'em up.Now these babies are kept sharp and ready.

And lathe tools? My God...it's like a whole new world. I feel like I was using a screwdriver to turn with before I got this tool. It puts such an edge on your lathe turning tools that it is even more of a pleasure to turn, and, naturally, requires less effort.

I am nothing but satisfied with the tool. Pricey, yes. But you are paying for precision, accuracy, repeatability, and results. Just do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
There is no doubt that this machine produces the sharpest edges I've ever had on my tools. I got real sick of sharpening the "old" way with bench stones, oil, honing guide, etc... It seems like I spent a lot of time getting things set up and then was only marginally satisfied with the results. The Tormek system is easy to set up, the Angle Master is very ingenious, and the results are perfectly repeatable and extremely quick. I can sharpen a set of seven chisels in the amount of time I used to spend on just one. I use mine for plane irons, chisels, planer and jointer blades, and knives. I don't use it for turning or carving tools so I can't comment on its value in those areas.

Here are the things I like:
- Uses the same stone for grinding and polishing. Sounds too good to be true, but it works.
- The array of jigs available make it possible to sharpen just about anything imaginable. Rather than having a simple tool rest that sharpens everything ok but not great, they've designed a whole system that makes it possible to put a keen edge on every tool you own.
- Water cooled, low RPM. Doesn't create sparks or destroy the temper of the tool. Other water cooled sharpeners are available but not nearly as capable as this one.
- Rock solid construction. Admittedly, this thing isn't very complex but the machine itself and all the jigs are top-notch.
- Outer end of stone is flat so you can lap the back of your chisels and plane irons.
- Makes my kitchen knives unbelievably sharp. Never knew what I was missing before (I like to cook).

What I don't like:
- Generally I prefer a flat-ground edge to a hollow ground edge. There are sharpeners available that will do a flat grinding but overall I'm more than happy to give that up for the results I get with my Tormek
- You really can't get by without the stone grader. Don't know why they don't include it in the base package. Make sure you get one.
- Jigs are expensive. When you get some of these jigs you'll be amazed that they charge so much for it. And unless you don't plan on sharpening anything more than chisels and plane irons, you'll need more jigs. The flip side is that you need only buy the jigs you want.
- Some of the advertised uses seem silly to me. I can hone the edge of a hand scraper with a bench stone in about half the time that it would take to set up the Tormek. And who really needs a razor sharp edge on their axe?

Overall, I'm extremely glad I got the Tormek. I don't like spending time sharpening my tools-I like to spend time using them. The Tormek allows me to get the onerous task of maintenance over and done with so I can move on.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best investments I ever made
I make my living with tools, ten years as a contractor and the last twenty as a blacksmith. Even though I buy top of the line tools, seldom does a tool surpass my expectations. The Tormek grinder is a notable exception. I bit the bullet and bought the complete setup with all the jigs. I started by grinding about 20 wood chisels that were in various states of dullness, including some with deep nicks. Without exception, I was literally able to shave the hair off my arm with every single chisel after sharpening them on this grinder. I also sharpened some scissors and on my first attempt, was able to cut a piece of cloth as narrow as a single thread wide. A hand plane was able to cut a shaving thin enough to see through. Tormek includes a jig that makes setting the exact blade angle a simple matter and proper angle/blade geomeetry is the key to a good edge.

Though the tools are sharp when you finish grinding, the leather honing wheel puts the finishing touch on a razor edge and cutting a thin curl across the end grain of a piece of wood is a simple matter. The instructions are clear and the machine well engineered. While a bit pricey for just home use, even hobby woodworkers would benefit from this investment. The tool is not difficult to use and I had my wife sharpen a couple chisels. There was no difference in the quality of the edges from those I did. I performed before and after tests with a chisel that appeared sharp. Initially it would cut a reasonably even curl going with the grain of the wood. After sharpening on the Tormek, it would cut the same, or even better, curl going across the grain and through a knot.

The jigs are versatile enough to allow for sharpening a wide range of tools. The edges I obtained were, in nearly all cases, better than the factory edges on a new tool. I highly recommend this grinder, especially to anyone who regularly uses, planes, chisels, gouges, and woodturning tools. It is a heavy duty machine that will do all the manufacturer claimes, and more! You will wonder how you ever lived without it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It could be better!
I also wonder why someone else has not made a knock off at a better price. I have had this machne for 3 years and am on my second stone. I buy and sell antique tools as well as make custom furniture. I have used it to sharpen every thing but my internal gouges. I do not like the dimond dressing attachment. I machined a new jig that would hold the $20 dimond dressing wheel by Delta. It makes for a very flat stone in less time. I have also made jigs that are stiffer that do not flex. I love the fact that I spend so much less time sharpening my tools etc. I sharpened my 13 planer blades. I had to make a longer guide so I could slide the blade all the way accross. Time is money and even at the price they charge I have made my money back many times over with the time saved. Having a small machine shop on the side has made the machine more usable for my needs. This is a wood carvers dream come true. Happy Sharpening

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected
I have had my super grind for a month now and I am 100% satified. I had the Makita wet stone grinder before this and was not very pleased with it, but the Tormek is a pleasant suprise. I have sharpened every thing I can get my hands on, and after the initial learning curve for set up the sharpening goes quickly and easily. My biggest test for the machine was my 12.5" planer blades. My previous sharpener just couldnt do the job, but the Tormek was AWESOME! Highly recommend this machine. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Using a dull-edged tool takes more effort, gives inferior results, and is dangerous. This Delta sharpening center uses a wet/dry system to hone both hardened and nonhardened tools and helps keep you on the cutting edge. Powered by a 120-volt, 1/5-horsepower induction motor, it rests on a solid cast-iron base that bolts easily to any bench or tabletop in the shop. The wet side spins a 1,000-grit, 8-inch wheel at 400 rpm to sharpen hardened tools without damaging their temper. Water pressure is easily regulated to help achieve a constant stream suited to any sharpening application. For honing edges and pointing screwdrivers, the dry side turns the 5-inch aluminum-oxide wheel up to 3,600 rpm. We especially appreciate the ease with which the tool rest and holder adjust to work on either wheel, whether tightly clamped around blades for a perfectly horizontal surface or removed to allow rotation. --Justin Paul ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I like this thing, with the planer knife rest
I purchased both the 23-710 sharpening center and the 23-715 planer knife attachment (knife holder and rest.) I have the planer knife rest on the large wheel and the original tool rest (which you see pictured on the large wheel) on the small wheel, the original tool rest for the small wheel is not used. I had to make another mounting pin to attach both tool rests at the same time (or could have bought one from Delta.)

The 23-715 planer knife rest is very easy to adjust (unlike the standard knife holder) and wide enough to allow you to sharpen with the full width of the stone (which makes the stone last longer.) I use both knife "holders" depending on the cutting width of the tool being sharpened. As you slide the knife holder back and forth along the planer knife rest, you simply adjust the height adjustment knob until the full surface of the blade contacts the stone. If I am in a hurry that's it, otherwise I finish with the "scarey sharp" system (a sheet of glass and emery cloth.) To set the desired angle, I started with an adjustable protractor and cut a few blocks for quick setup.

I use the small wheel only infrequently. It's purpose is less for sharpening than shaping - as in removing large nicks or chips. If you use the original tool rest on the small wheel as I have, you should vary the contact point to avoid grooving the wheel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delta 23-710 sharping center
I purchased the Delta 23-710 sharpening center and I was very pleased with the price, shipping cost and quality. I read the "horror" stories about vibrating, out of alignment stones and unusable tool rests. It made me question if I wanted a Delta. My unit came almost completely assembled from the box with very little to assemble. When I turned it on I was surprised to find almost no vibration. The tool rest took a little thought to get the alignment parallel to the stone. I used the stone removal tool, lying on top of the 8-inch stone as my parallel surface. I lowered the tool rest to just touching and then tightened the alignment screws. The problems I have encountered are, the tool rest is useless for small "palm" size carving tools and the fine grit stone is very soft and will have to be "dressed" often. The dressing stone is included. Over all I am pleased to have a pile of very sharp (after stropping) wood working tools.

4-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Can this sharpener do what the Tormek can? No way! However this sharpener is a lot less expensive. I've used it successfully to sharpen wood chisels and plane irons. It does a good job in a lot less time than doing it all by hand. The white wheel is good for rough work (grinding a new edge on an old screw driver) and the tool holders work fine. Yes the wet wheel might splash a bit and the tool holders are not adequate for sharpening complex curves. But if you are looking for an inexpensive way to sharpen flat edge tools, this one does work. I have no complaints.

1-0 out of 5 stars 23-710 - save your money
The biggest problem and this is beyond the general low quality is the fact that it provides one with no built in methods for repeatable grinding angles. I found that the time spent setting up for grinding the angles I wanted was better spent sharpening by hand. Mine went back the same day!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the effort required to lift the box it's packaged
I purchased this item from my local Woodcraft store, it was on a Manager's special (now I know why). All of the negative comments already posted are true-poor quality control (the drip tube on the resevoir had plastic shavings lodged in it, although not a big deal to clear w/ a little blast of air, how could this have passed a quality inspection prior to shipment?), the tool rest doesn't even come close to being low enough for half of my chisels (Stanley & Marples), excess vibration, & on & on & on... I recently purchased a new Band Saw, I passed up on the Delta & purchased a Jet because of the poor fit & finish on the Delta. It really makes me wonder what Delta is doing-or is not doing!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Woodworkers Dream Come True
This system is truely the best auxillary power tool I have ever owned. It has literly made my blades, chisels, gouges and scrapers razor sharp and absolutely consistent. Hand sharpening is for the birds or masochists. Now I can touch up a dull gouge in less han a minute and have a perfectly contoured, razor sharp tool and get right back to work. Although it's great for chisels the Tormek system really shines for Lathe tools and planer/jointer blades. Best investment I ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tormek, expensive but worth it
As an amateur woodworker, chef, and handyman around the house, the value I place on sharp tools can not be understated. That being said, there are few comprehensive options out there for sharpening all of your tools with one system. The Tormek SuperGrind is the solution. After unpacking the system, I proceded to sharpen all of my kitchen knives to a razor's edge, with ease. Previously I had to bring all of my knives to the sharpening center and pay $ dollars for the service. Those days are gone! I can now sharpen my wive's turning tools, my chisels and plane irons, even my jointer blades with one easy to use system. It makes experts out of novices, I can't praise this system enough. Buy the Tormek, expensive but worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST EXPENSIVE IS THE CHEAPEST
My tool sharpening career began 20 years ago when I bought a few Norton oilstones. Never could master them so I upgraded to Japaneese waterstones with fair results, but a messy chore I detested. Bought Diamond stones to flatten the backs, a lapping stone with dust, and next a bench grinder. I could sharpen a blade already ground to the correct angle but forget about re-edging an angle on the grinder, blue edges every time! Bought different wheels for the grinder, same results. Next went to the Makita flat circular grinding wheel but the wheel was so soft, hard to keep it flat. Next read about a jig for the grinder and another new softer stone that would not burn edges as well as an angle devise to hold the blades at correct angles on the handstones. Bought a few new handstones, synthetic, ant tried all of these with fair results. Over the past 20 yeats I figure I must have about $1000 invested in all of this equipment (let me know if you want to buy it) and I still detested the sharpening thing. Could do plane blades and chisels so-so.
I heard about the Tormek system and read the amazon reviews (which sold me)and decided to give it a try. I bought mine through Sharp Tools USA, a business that only sells this system. I splurged and got the deluxe package since buying the individual jigs I needed would have cost the same and I would be missing some jigs. Everything they say is true. [anyone] can become a professional sharpener. I beg friends to bring their tools and knives and scissors to me. Instead of detesting the job, I now love sharpening. The only bad thing about the system is that a few scratches on the bevel remain that I guess you could lap out on the leather wheel, but these do not make a difference to me. All of my blades are now razor sharp, and in fact I don't have any hair left on my left arm from test shaving after each sharpening.
I sure wish I knew about the Tormek system 20 years ago. Instead of spending over $1000 I would have spent several hundreds less and not had to go through the hours of frustration trying to sharpen my tools. Yes, the most expensive item is often the cheapest in the long run! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt DW758
Having recently purchased the DeWalt DW758 bench grinder for use in my shop, I can say that it is definitely a good value. The ¾ HP capacitor-start motor comes up to speed quickly, runs smoothly with steady speed and ample power for most any grinding need. Overall, it is a very good heavy-duty general-use grinder.

The stamped steel wheel guards are not as sturdy or easy to remove as the cast iron guards on other manufactures more expensive models. The DW758's guards have screws on the top and bottom, instead of on the side, which can be difficult to remove when the grinder is mounted to a bench. A small right-angle "Yankee" ratcheting screwdriver makes bottom screw removal much easier and more practical than unbolting the grinder from the bench to change wheels. This probably won't even be an issue for most users, given the relative longevity and infrequent changing of grinding wheels with normal use.
The DW758's shaft bearings are sealed and require disassembly for lubrication. DeWalt recommends having the bearings serviced by one of their Authorized Service Centers every six weeks to six months, depending on the severity of use. This could add up to quite a substantial cost over the life of the tool, given the minimum "bench fee" most Service Centers have, as well as through lost productivity to businesses from having a tool or piece of equipment out of service. For a shop tool with a recommended maintenance schedule this frequent, it would probably be better if the unit had capped grease fittings and plugs to allow relubrication as required in the shop, without having to remove it and take it to a service center.
The grinders tools rests work well, are sturdy, and can be tilted with the use of the supplied allen wrench to change the grinding angle, which is a very useful feature. The unit comes supplied with 60 course-grit and 36 medium-grit wheels installed and can accept other 8" wheels with a face width of up to 1" and wire wheels with a face width of up to 1-1/4" as well as cotton buffing wheels.
I have no problem at all recommending the DW758. The unit seems very well made, especially considering the modest price tag, and will no doubt last through many years of hard use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly built grinder
...this is a beautiful piece of work. It is well built and remarkably well balanced such that I really don't need to bolt it down. Its bearings are perfect as it seems it takes forever to stop once the power is turned off. The wheels are well matched for general use and fairly easy to change once the small screws holding the wheel covers are removed. The tool rests are sturdy and steady and easy to adjust and they stay put. I use it all the time with great results in my home shop. My only suggestion is that a work light should be included and it would be handy if there were a 2nd speed. Overall a real bargain for this 8" grinder. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works exactly as advertised.
When this unit is used properly, dry wheel for grinding and wet wheel for honing, this tool does a more than adequate job. When honing, using the entire wheel by sliding the blade across the surface using using moderate to moderately strong, even pressure eliminates the need for frequent dressing. Cleaning could be easier and the guide could stand some improvement, but overall this is a very good tool, especially considering the price. I got what I paid for.

1-0 out of 5 stars I expected much better from Delta
I havd owned this grinder for about six months and I am ready to throw it in the trash. To start with, the wheel is too soft and requires frequent trueing. This is particually a problem when you have to stop and true while working on a blade because it changes the grinding angle. The rpm's are too slow. With soft wheel and the low rmp's it can take over a hour to grind a blade. Cleaning up is also a problem. You have to take the wheel well off to clean out the residue of the wheel, which is considerable because the wheel is so soft.

I can turly say I can find nothing redeeming about this tool!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Great
I've had the Delta for over a year now and am a little disapointed w/ the grinder. As in the other reviews, the wet wheel is very soft, and in the year of avg to light use, the 10" wheel is now probably around 7" (or less). You MUST dress the wet wheel frequently or else end up with a pretty severe oval (trust me on this one!). The dry wheel wasn't bad but I did need to add the Veritas Grinder Tool Rest to make it really useful. Plus, you will need a good set of stones (I prefer water) to truely hone your edge.

In hind site, I would rather have bought a regular Bench Grinder (i.e. Baldor). You have much more flexability in the type of wheels that you can get for grinding (shaped, silicon carbide, felt, leather, ...) unlike the 2 stones here.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK - Does the Job
I purchased this grinder because the other choices of wet grinders were way too expensive. I mainly use the 10 inch wet wheel to sharpen my woodturning tools. The tool rest is quite cheesy, and Delta does not make a jig to help you sharpen woodturning tools. The wheel itself is quite soft and you will probably have to true it up after every gouge you grind. I agree with one of the other reviews that the drain plug is too small, but its a good grinder for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Small Tools and Plane Blades
This was a great investment for me. I did not want to pay allot for a sharpner for my hand tools. This unit look like a good alternative to those more expensive units and it was. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good grinder, but they stopped thinking a little too soon
I just got this unit from Amazon (a GREAT store)and put it together. I am very pleased with the smoothness of operation (inifinetly better than my old Craftsman grinder), but less than pleased with the not very well thought out scheme for attaching the plastic vision safety guards and and the aluminum pedestals for supporting the piece you are grinding. The former attach to steel brackets that can easily come in contact with the grinding wheels (not good) and the latter are only supported on one side and as such can tilt when you apply pressure to a piece being ground (not good, either).

The instructions are also quite poor in showing how to assemble the accesories. It reads like it was written by someone for whom English is a second language.

Also, wish it had a brake as the grinding wheels spin a LONG time after you power off.

Overall, a good tool, but one whose designers stopped thinking too soon when designing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As expected
This 6" stationary grinder performs all tasks as expected, with minimal motor noise and easy grinding wheel changes. And if more access to the wheels is needed, the integrated shields swing out of the way with a simple twist of a wing-nut. The plattens adjust their angle to the wheels with similar ease.

For the price, this single speed grinder is a reasonable buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid performer!
This bench grinder is heavy and well-constructed, although the parts do not go together very precisely, e.g. the tool rests are not exactly square to the wheels. However, a bench grinder is not exactly a precision piece of bench tool either, so I don't think my little gripe is that important. One problem of real importance though, both wheels were very wobbly as shipped from the factory. But after removing and reinstalling them on the motor shaft, they do run true.

4-0 out of 5 stars My First Bench Grinder
I am Currently starting my workshop in my garage. So I set out one day for the basics, a drill press, a table saw, an air compressor and a bench grinder. That day I came home with the 6 inch DeWalt bench grinder. Since that day, I've used it to sharpen lawn mower blades, remove burs from angle iron I've drilled and many other chores. I've used other makes of the 6 inch bench grinder, and they just simply don't have the guts of the DeWalt. The DeWalt bench grinder starts up fast, doesn't have a problem removing neccessary material, and runs very quietly. It is relatively easy to change wheels, the only improvement I would make on the grinder would be to use finger tightening screws to make it easier to change grinding wheels. Other than that...Great Job DeWalt! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to operate
This grinder is light years better than any Asian import grinder out there. The motor is vibration free and runs very strong for only 1/4 hp.

The box was very solid with the grinder shrink wrapped to a piece of wood that was the same size as the bottom of the box.
The shrink wrap had been torn around each grinding wheel. Since there was Amazon sales lititure in the box, I assume that the shipper at Amazon was checking for broken wheels. Since another reader complained of broken wheels, Amazon obviously reads customer reviews.

Since this is a low speed grinder (1800 rpm), it is really intended for sharpening tool steel, lathe chisels, etc. There are only a few low speed grinders available so this is really a specialty grinder. If you just want a general purpose grinder for sharpening lawnmower blades and such, you probably would be happy with the Baldor Big Red, 1/3 h/p 6" grinder as it turns at 3600 rpm, is cheaper and still has the same great Baldor quality.

The blade guards are heavy-duty cast iron and the exhaust chutes direct all of the waste out the back. This is a blessing or a curse depending on your perspective. The guards fit very close to the sides of the wheel so there would be maximum containment if a wheel were to disintegrate. The spark guards are very stout and adjust easily and stay put.

The wheel guards on all the imports that I looked at other than the Jet 8" have flimsy sheet metal guards with flimsy, poorly adjustable tool rests. I would much rather have the Baldor's heavy-duty guards in place if a wheel disintegrates rather than one of the imports guards.

I don't have a problem with the tools rests as one other reviewer did. They are very adjustable and very solid for what they are, basic tool rests. (If you are using this for sharpening lathe chisels, you will probably be installing an aftermarket jig anyway). I find them easy to adjust, just keep a wrench handy. My only real complaint was that the ground surfaces were protected by brown plastic packing tape. It required a razor blade and some solvent to get the adhesive off. All in all, a very minor complaint for such a high quality, solid machine.

The eye shields are very solid. They are large and made of 3/16 Lexan and adjust quite nicely. They mount high and out of the way. Time will tell whether they will stay on the machine or I will take them off, but as long as they hold up to the harsh environment, I will use them. The eye shields on all of the imports were pitiful.

The wheels included are high quality Norton Silicon Oxide general-purpose wheels. Not good for fine work like sharpening lathe chisels, but nice and round and balanced. Save them for sharpening your lawnmower blades and put on some Norton White Aluminum Oxide wheels for the fine work.

I could have bought an import 8" or about three import 6"s for less than this high quality 6" but after reading reviews of the imports, and looking at them at the store, I know that I will not ever have to worry - "Is this going to be the time that it will give up the ghost" before flipping the switch. My grandkids will be able to use this tool, and my kid is only 2!

3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
The Baldor arrived with a cracked wheel so the honeymoon was very short lived. Since sparks fly out the rear unabated (along with bits of wheel and tool) I bolted the grinder to a small plywood box I built to contain the sparks and other detritus that spins off any grinder and set it on a non skid mat.

My main problem is with the tool rests. For this money I expect they should be solid and easy to adjust. They are neither. Unless I really crank them down, they will shift when pressing a tool down. Adjusting them with a wrench is difficult on a good day since the bolts are tucked down in between the wheels and the motor. I finally exchanged their bolts for some small plastic jig handles, so at least I can adjust them a little easier.

Otherwise, the Baldor runs smoothly and quietly, now that I have unbroken wheels mounted. For such an otherwise well made machine, it was disappointing to find it such a pain to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top of the line
Bit of a grinder junkie here. I actually like these gritty little things. Ok, so there's not much to a grinder. Spinning stones and sparks and what not but this Baldor sets itself apart from the rest of them by the balance and quality of the motor. You can use it for hours and the motor will never overheat and it's smooth as silk. It has reasonable heft so it stays put on the bench pretty well without bolting it down. The tool rests are ok for general grinding but as with most grinders you'll still need a jig to sharpen chisels and plane blades accurately. The wheel covers are cast, not sheet metal. The casting work is so-so but what the heck, everything fits. This Baldor is to grinders what Bridge City is to tools...you could make a case that it's overkill and something cheaper would do just as well. Nevertheless, there's just something about having quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Quality Grinder!
This grinder is exceptionally smooth, and it's US-built. Now that may not seem like a big deal, but here are my thoughts on that. There are a lot of Chinese and Taiwanese grinders available, but they're not the same models that were available under the same name-brand even two years ago. The importers change factories, and hence models, regularly. This Baldor grinder is made in Fort Smith, Arkansas. If there is a problem with it... even 20 years from now... parts will be available.

The quality of this unit is immediately apparent when one looks at the heft of the tool rests. They're not stamped steel, but rather heavy cast steel that's machined smooth on one side -- these are tool rests you don't have to replace immediately (some of the stamped steel tool rests are so flimsy!). Next, look at the wheel guards. Again, cast and heavy... nothing's going to bend or dent these things! Inside, you've got a Baldor motor -- the recognized industry "best" for electric motors...

If you could compare this grinder side-by-side with one of the imports, you would quickly understand why it carries a higher price.

Highly Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Baldor Grinder: superb
Extremely quiet, virtually no vibration, heavy and easily adjustable tool rests. The grinder just shouts (or should I say whispers) quality and is easily the most pleasant to use of any I've ever tried. If you need a grinder or buffer, do yourself a favor and pick up a Baldor. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars cast pot metal under powerd ...
one of the tool rets one mine broke wile gentel use I was suprisd because I thought it would be steel or cast iron wich i could fix by weldimng it but no it was pot metal which is almost imposible to repair. Ten seconds after I turned it on the spare stopers on top losend and started to grind away the spark shileds got dirty and started to shake about and get in the way. so needless to say I took them off and threw them out. them moter spins to fast to grind cuting tools for it burns the temper and is good for nothing but light slow deburing. The moter is pathetic It takes for ever to grind a lawn moer blaed espsily if you have a tractor with two blades like on a tractor mower. if you even have a slight nick in the blade it takes five pluss minuts longer at least. then by trhe timne you are about done shrping your two blades the mote housing is very very warm for it dose not have sufficent cooling. also to use it it needs to be bolted to heavy and sturdy base or else it will tilt back and flip over if you use any presure. also it takes forever to grind any thing.buy a real grinder like a 1725 rpm grinder for wood wqorking tools or an angel grinder for lawn mower blades and outhe stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
Quality construction. Tool rests are solid cast(not flimsy stamped like a lot of other grinders in this price range). Angled channel in right tool rest is great for sharpening drill bits. Super quiet - almost too quiet (can hardly tell that it's running). For the price (39.99 at Lowes), it has an attached flexible lamp!! Sturdy plastic spark deflectors are easily adjusted and are very transparent, so you can still see what you are doing. The only thing missing is variable speed control (how often would you find that feature useful?).

5-0 out of 5 stars no frills, just reliable and affordable
This grinder works well for sharpening chisels, slotted screw drivers, and other small tools. It is quiet and operates smoothly with no perceptible vibration. It doesn't have variable speed, exotic attachments, or any other (in my case unneeded) features. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Grinder
These days it is not readily apparent how much difference there actually is in the quality of products. Generic Hardware stores are forced to sell inexpensive products instead of high quality ones. This is because folks these days are more interested in filling their hobby areas quickly, instead of purposefully. I've been a mac user for years, and have really come to understand the cost of quality in the area of computers and their applications. I recently became interested in metal working and bought one of the lowe's 'special' ($59.95) grinders for doing some basic grinding operations. It is an OK machine, but there is absolutely NO comparison to the machine presented here. We have been expanding the hobby and are going to use this grinder as part of a belt grinder system as well. When the Baldor arrived - the box says it all. The picture doesn't convey the seriousness of this product. Its big and robust. And when you flip on the switch it runs like a swiss watch. If you want to be inspired by your tools instead of challenged by them - invest in good tools - this is a great grinder. You could probably build a battleship with it.

Avoid the Walmarting of America - buy fewer things of more lasting value. This grinder will be around when your grinding days are way past over.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
I have had made Baldor grinder since December, and have had NO problems. It would make an excellent addition to any woodworking shop!

If you are looking for a smooth, powerful, heavy-duty grinder, this is it! It should provide many years of trouble-free service.

Also, Amazon.com provided excellent service.

I'm glad it got it.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
this is a piece of pure junk. the plastic jig (for chisels) is not rigid, and therefore flexes. The result is an angle on your chisels that is far from perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price
I received this for Christmas. I have never been able to get my planes sharp with the bench-mounted wheel I have. This works great. I sharpened a hand plane and was able to finally get the little shavings I see on woodworking shows. The unit is almost all plastic and seems prety cheaply made, it does do a pretty good job. At around $50 it is a great deal for someone that does not do a great deal of sharpening. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Consider Another Grinder
I bought one of these to replace a Delta 6in grinder that was stolen a little over a year ago. The 8in grinder seemed like a deal. I do a lot of plane and chisel sharpening and wanted something that would dish out the cutting edge a little less. This it does. However it absolutely stinks otherwise. I bolted it to my bench and it vibrated so badly anything that is on the bench walks itself off no matter how heavy. Not only are the stones not round, but are out of true by at least 1/16 inch! Delta sent me new stones...same problem. I bought new stones...same problem...but less. It turns out that both the stones and the shaft wobble! Delta would not warranty the grinder unless I sent it to them and pay the shipping both ways! This was as much as the cost of the grinder..Not only that, but the clear spark gaurds had huge stickers on them, that when peeled off, left all their adhesive on the gaurd so you couldn't see through them. Water would not remove the adhesive and anything that could, dissolved the plastic as well. Delta sent me new ones...for a different grinder! Delta is off my list for tools as long as they keep having things made in China. I cant image what their other stuff made in China must be like and I'm not willing to take the chance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for hollow grinding
The unlisted dimensions are 12 inches wide by 7 1/2 inches deep by 6 inches high. It was slightly larger than I expected. The wheel is very absorbant so water can be added slowly to the wheel itself even while it runs. This is not a common grinder but is a sharpener and requires patience and some skill. It makes an excellent hollow grind as described in another review. It does not cut quickly. The tool posts could be sturdier. The allen wrench fits the screw heads rather sloppily. These two points are why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Amazon.com had the best price anywhere with free shipping. It was well worth the money. I am very happy with this tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT UP TO DELTA STANDARDS
I bought this for one thing, sharping knifes. I tried to use it according to instructions. First off the water on a flat surface ran out the drain. Thinking I had too much water,I went ahead and started to sharpen a knife. Part of the wheel was not even getting wet? I can't think why if it had water running out the drain on a level surface why it didn't cover the entire surface of the wheel.Next it doesn't seem to have enough speed or power to sharpen anything! I did want the slower speed than a regular grinder and the wet wheel. But took it back as a loss cause. I have several Delta tools that are very good ,but I cannot rate this tool as a good one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful tool
I found one of these at my local home supply store and immediatly brought it home. I found it to be very useful for putting a hollow grind into the bevel of my chisels and plane blades.

The way I use it is to hollow grind the chisel bevel until the hollow grind goes all across the bevel. I then take the chisel to a 4000/1000 combination water stone and sharpen the bevel on the 1000 grit until I get two "flats" on the tip and tail of the bevel. I then switch to the 4000 grit of the stone and polish those bevels. On a 1/2" wide chisel it takes about a minute or two to hollow grind the bevel and another 30 seconds on each grit of the stone to make the chisel razor sharp.

The grinder has two tool rest. I set one for my chisels and one for the plane blade. Because the grinder has a forward and reverse direction I can use both tool rest.

I have found it a good idea to put a towel behind the grinder to catch any water overflow (it is a wet grinder). Also, the metal grindings from your tool combined with the water have turned the wheel a rust brown. But I've not found that to have any effect on the grinding ability.

I'm glad I bought it. ... Read more
