5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic drill
This drill is lightweight but provides solid power. The compact design and slim profile allow the drill to get into fairly tight places. The handle has a very good ergonomic feel to it and the forward/reverse switch is easy to use (for right-handers) with the flip of the thumb.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have used them for two years.
I have been using a older verson of this drill for 2 years. and was so happy with it I bought a second one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality, but still NiCad
I purchased this Drill/Flashlight combo and have been very pleased with its performance. The drill doesn't spin as fast as a corded drill, but the quality is unsurpassed. Makita really delivers on making an easy-to-use, top-notch product.

The downside is that this drill still uses NiCad batteries which suffer from the "memory effect." To combat this, make sure that batteries are always stored uncharged. Also make sure that a battery is completely used up before you recharge it.

4-0 out of 5 stars High Torque, Nimble, Great Control
This changed my mind about wanting a cordless drill. It has got all the torque of many larger corded drills. Battery capacity is good and the speed control is outstanding! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great battery tools
I have been using Makita battery drills for twenty years. I have managed several exhibits production shops and I have converted them all to all Makita battery tools. They stand up to every day abuse. Makita stands behind their warrenty and the service centers are widely distributed, and they have the best overall selection of battery tools so one charger will take care of diverse needs. The egonomics of the 14.4 and power are second to none for its size it really fits my hand and the controls are logically located. In my opinion if you need a more powerful drill you may want to go to a corded drill because bigger battery drills get really heavy. This drill is also available in a 1/2 inch chuck which it has plenty of power to support. Finally the flashlight is excellent also. It sits securely on its base and its exceptionally bright light is on a handy rotating head. Every Makita I ever bought is still in service. There are other excellent drills like Panasonic and Bosch but the Makita product line is still the best overall value. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good performance Poor reliability
The drill has adequate power although reliability has been very poor. After 6 months the clutch had to be replaced which Makita handled under warranty. In 9 more months the clutch went out again. They did replace the drill but within 2 weeks one of the batteries quit. I now have purchased a new battery but the second one goes dead very quickly. Will most likely never own another. ... Amazon.com Review

Boasting 18 volts of power, Makita's combo pack delivers the turning torque and high blade speed to get even the toughest jobs done. This package combines a powerful drill/driver with the 6-1/2-inch circular saw that garnered both the Popular Mechanics One of the Ten Best Tools of 1999 and the Hanley-Wood Tools of the Trade Editor's Choice awards. The drill exerts up to 404 inch-pounds of torque at up to 450/1,400 rpm, depending on which of the 18 torque settings and two speed gears you select. The drill's distinctive tip-up design makes for easy use all day either overhead or at shoulder height, a big advantage when you're dealing with heavier, 18-volt tools. For a cordless, the saw is remarkably powerful. Spinning its large 6-1/2-inch blade, it slices through two-by materials with ease, even when beveling at 45 degrees. When we tested it, we were immediately impressed with how effectively the electric brake stops the blade rotation--a safety feature we demand in a saw designed to take up ladders and other potentially precarious places. And--like practically everyone else in the world--we really appreciate the attention to detail and quality in Makita's legendary motor, with its tough ball-bearing construction. Simply put, these are tools designed for extended use under the toughest job site conditions. The motor's brushes are accessible via an outside panel, too, and easily replaced--a handy feature you won't find with other brands. --Justin Paul ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No points for the saw!
The saw's base plate screws do come loose and do fall out. All those people who gave this combo 5 stars should take a closer look at their saw.

I used my saw only twice. Once to rip 6 ft of lumber and once to cross cut 2 ft of the same lumber. When I went to use it a third time it didn't have enought power to finish my cut. When I replaced the battery I noticed one of the base plate screws was missing and the others were loose. I replaced all the base plate screws with screws a 1/4" longer and added locking nuts to keep them from coming loose again. I also used the two batteries right away leaving the drill empty.

I found the drill to be very powerful and heavy. For my uses it is probably overkill.

If you are thinking of getting a combo pack I recommend buying the tools separate. Check out the 18v Dewalt saw, (...)(no base plate screws to come loose!)and try the Makita 9.6v drill. The total cost is comparable to a combo pack but you will end up with the usefull saw that you want and the right size of drill along with 4 batteries instead of only 2.

Now go build something!

5-0 out of 5 stars Power and Price combo....
These tools are incredibly powerful, and the price for this combo is exceptional for this quality. I never had any doubt that the drill would be top quality, as the name Makita has a reputation when it comes to cordless drills. It is perfectly balanced, making it very ergonomic, and it has so much power, it can drive screws all day with ease. The saw worried me that it may have been a throw-in, something to complete the combo package. Not even. I immediately put it to work cutting overhanging 2 x 6's on a 10 x 10 deck. It cut through these boards with the greatest of ease. I had a 6 1/2 inch electric Black and Decker circular saw previously, and the cordless saw cut with more power. I was amazed. Not dragging a cord behind, and not only not sacrificing power but gaining some.

A true bargain for any handyman or "weekend warrior", I don't see how anyone would be disappointed with this outstanding workmanship.

4-0 out of 5 stars More then enough for home, but the battery power lacks...
The circular saw in particular works excellent, weighted nicely, and very easy to handle. My only complaint is that the battery packs do not seem to last long while working, and I am in constant rotation of the batteries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not what I expected
I bought the 18V drill/saw combo about 4 months ago. I am building a house and the tools have seen heavy use during this period. I have been very impressed with the torque and speed of both units. The saw is especially impressive as it will easily rip a piece of 4x8 3/4" plywood as well as cut through all 2x material with ease.

That said, I have been dissapointed with the workmanship of the units. I had to return the drill after the first use as the battery became lodged in it. The folks at the place I bought it couldn't get the battery out either. The replacement drill has worked great though. The saw has been especially dissapointing. After the first month of use the screws that hold the base started loosening and, even with intermittent tightening, eventually fell out. The base was slightly out of square with the blade and had to be straightened. And most recently, the handle for the guard broke off. Finally, I have been a bit dissapointed with the battery life for both units.

Overall, I am pleased with the performance, if not the quality, of the units but would recommend going with a more expensive (i.e. higher quality) brand if the units will be placed in a constant use situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Precision and Power
Before I purchased this combo , I looked at all the others , 14.4 volt and 18 volt and up . The only saw I found that had a stable base that was flat , by stable I mean the saw body does not move from side to side and the base stays still , was the makita , also the base is flat and does not rock like most of the steel bases . Both tools work smoothly and have plenty of power. I have many power tools and every time I purchase another brand,I end up returning it and getting makita , check them out for yourself , the quality is always there . ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Makita's Mega-Combo kit offers heavy-duty firepower for any gut-check situation. Starting with two 2.2 amp hr NiMH batteries and a charger, this package gives you a powerful drill/driver, the circular saw that garnered both the Popular Mechanics One of the Ten Best Tools of 1999 and Hanley-Wood's Tools of the Trade Editor's Choice awards, an aggressive reciprocating saw, and an extra ration of light.

The drill exerts up to 404 inch-pounds of torque at up to 450/1,400 rpm, depending on which of the 18 clutch settings and two torque positions you select. The keyless chuck and ergonomic design are two user-friendly features. The circular saw spins a large 6-1/2-inch blade to cut two-by material even when beveled at 45 degrees. It has an electric brake that stops blade rotation within a split second--a safety feature that has not yet made its way to all cordless saws and one that we appreciate. Finally comes the reciprocating saw, which features toolless blade changing and shoe adjustment, a fast-stopping electric brake, and variable speed.

Geared for extended use under a contractor's tough assignments, each of these tools is designed to allow you to easily replace the brushes from the outside--a handy feature you won't find in other brands on the market. As with most 18-volt tools, they feel a little weighty in the hand and probably aren't the best choices for working overhead, but they can be depended on to pull through even the grimmest conditions. --Justin Paul ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Makita Combo Kit is exceptional!
Wow! This Makita cordless kit is just terrific. The tools are powerful yet quiet and light. Plus the ergonomic designs are very thoughtfully done. The new technology batteries hold a charge longer too. My DeWalt 18volt tools do not approach the quality and performance of this new Makita line up. Thanks Makita for building great tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makita DK1021BL cordless combo kit
I sold my DeWalt system 2 months after I bought the Makita system. It blows DeWalt clean out of the water because it is 2.2 AH and DeWalt is still a measly 1.7 which translates to longer run time. Also the Nickel-Metal-Hydride batteries mean you don't have to keep the trigger pulled when the battery is low and wait for it to run all the way down. You just pop it in the charger whenever you want because there is no memory. How is anybody going to top this outfit?

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality Tools
I purchased a Ryobi combo set that included the same tools as the Makita combo set. Battery life with the Ryobi was short and the recip saw broke after a few hours. I returned the Ryobi set and purchased the Makita combo set after reading the customer reviews here.

I put up galvanized steel fence panels on my property and used the reciprocating saw to cut the panels to fit. What a difference! The recip saw cut through the galvanized steel like butter! A nice feature is the adjustable shoe. Being able to move the shoe up or down lengthens the life of the blade by moving the cutting edge to other parts of the blade. Another nice feature is the do-it-yourself carbon brush changes on the recip and drill/driver. The drill is in itself is really nice. Again, the quality of the tool was evident. Batteries seemed to last a long time.

I've grown up using corded tools [usually past down from my father] and finally decided to buy a nice cordless tool set after tripping on extension cords once too many times. Power is right up there with the corded tools.

If you are looking for a good set of tools, this is the set to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best tool tools I ever bought
I bought this tool set about 1 year ago and It is so handy. I have used it more times than I can count. I am a carpenter and I use it from trim work to cutting plywood off the eves of a roof. I am very impressed with the power of the drill, the amount of work I can get out of the tools on one charge of the batteries and how efficient the tools are to use. The tools are very rugged and durable. They have held up very well on the jobsite and I use them just about everyday. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs the power of a corded tool with the effiecency of a cordless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome drill, Great Circ Saw
Have now used this kit quite a bit while building a shed from scratch.

The drill is incredible. Great power, flexibility, balance and battery life. I have managed to break one of the two included bits, but I replaced it at the hardware store for 89 cents. The drill itself seems solid and well built, even after a lot of use.

The circ saw is powerful enough and well balanced, but battery life can be an issue if you don't plan your charges in advance.

The recip saw is nice enough and well balanced, if a little heavy (I had to do some tight cutting above my head and holding it up there was a little tiring after a while).

The flashlight? Well, it just sits there. I suppose it would be ok, but usually both of my batteries are taken, either by a tool or the charger.

The standout here is really the drill, followed by the circular saw. The fact that I don't have to drag a cord around is simply wonderful, and the 18v tools provide more than enough power for the things I do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent combo
Imagine, building a deck without using extension cords.....
I just finished building a deck with this combo and I must say that it was a pleasure using these quality tools. Using the driver to run 3 1/2" decking screws through the 2x's that I just cut with the 6 1/2" saw was a dream. The drill has power to spare and the saw cut 2x's all day without a problem. It was great to be able to cut 2x's at 45 degrees with this saw. I was totally amazed at how quiet the saw is (compared to electric saws). The saw base is extremely stable and smooth. Having the sawblade on the left made it easier to make cuts. The flashlight is very bright. The tools were comfortable to use all day long. I highly recommend this Makita kit!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Combo!
I already had the drill but I bought this combo to get the saw knowing that the extra money was well worth it for a second drill. The saw is great ... 6 1/2" blade will let you cut a 2x4 at 45 and I love the drill (great balance between weight and power.) I had previously used this drill to build a large deck and it was a pleasure to use in comparison to the 18v DeWalt that I had borrowed (to have two drills for the project.) In my book you can't go wrong with this kit!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Combo, Great price
This is a well priced and versatile "toy" for boys. The Drill is semi-pro quality, from the keyless chuck to the adjustable screw torque. The saw, for it's size, fits where a big saw doesn't with good power. The saw trigger is a little funky, the pulling back rather than depressing took some getting used to.

My Favorite is the flashlight. It reminds me of my 4 cell Mag Light, only cheaper on batteries. The Flashlight alone is worth it. Well, if you throw in the drill and saw. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great all-purpose power tool set
I became a Makita drill fan after working on a volunteer construction project. There were several brands of drill at the site, but the lone Makita seemed to always be the right one for the job -- no matter what the job was. However, I owned a power drill and only needed a jigsaw and small sander when I went tool shopping. But when I saw this kit, I knew it was a good value and that you could never have too many power drills....
I was even more impressed with this kit after it arrived. The tools did what I need them to do. Furthermore, the case is nicely designed: the instructions and sandpaper have their own slot in the carry case and its easy to put the tools back and get them out (important to me, because i don't have much space in my studio and need to store all the tools in the case when not in use.)
As for the tools, I have been very satisfied with all of them. In particular, I was impressed with the jigsaw. I was expecting to have to sacrifice "perfectly" straight cuts (like you get on a mitre or table saw.) But I easily cut a shelve down to size, with only the straight line I scored in the wood to go by.
All you need is safety goggles, some drill bits and clamps and you could tackle an endless number of weekend projects with this kit. (BTW, if you are new to buying tools, don't be turned off by this being a corded set; unless you won't have easy access to an outlet, you will get more power for your money and not have to stop in the middle of a project because you forgot to recharge the batteries :))

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
Makita tools are built to last, and the three tools in this combo pack are no exception. These three tools are the ones I reach more most often, and will do the bulk of home improvement work. The carrying case is a nice bonus, and you will save money over buying these essential tools individually. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't kill them
You can't kill these tools. I am a general contractor and have used them on many, many jobs. The 18 volt drill/ driver alone has outlasted four of my 18 volt DeWalts. The reciprocating saw is smooth and doesn't get bogged down. I use the set in my workshop at home as well as, on the job sight. It's nice to be cord free with so many different tools. The bike is a nice bonus. Of course, as soon as I got mine (for free I might add), I sold it to a kid down the street. This is the best tool combo deal I have ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal!
I'm not sure what the other reviewer was talking about but I found this to be a great deal. The combo kit is at the same if not lower price than it was before the bike was being offered, so to say that you have to pay extra makes no sense at all. The tools offered in this kit are the best! The hammer driver/drill is of course great quality, the jig saw seems to be the sister to their top of the line corded model, the circular saw and recip saw work great and the blower and flashlight are fantastic accessories that you will find yourself using constantly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip off free bike
...This offer includes a "free" bike, but the bike isn't really free, it comes at the additional cost of [$$$]. While this may be a good deal, it's hard to know without specific info regarding the bike. In any event, I feel it's a lie to say the bike is "free" when it in fact costs extra $$$. ... Read more
