My Flexible friend !
Before I bought the corded Dremel Multi I used to use hand tools. The results were good but took time to produce. I then saw an advert on the television for the Dremel. I then went to a tool shop to see it and it's rivals. The only other competitor was the Black and Decker corded Wizard. The wizard lost out to the Dremel due to it's narrower range of operating speeds and it's greater size. The Dremel also had a far greater range of accessories to supplement it's use.

The Speed is the Key
This is a fantastic tool for a home owner or craft enthusiast. The range of small tasks that you can achieve with the Multipro is unbelievable and easy, even for an untrained person.

This kit includes a flexi-shaft, which helps you get into corners by extending the accessory bit using a long flexible shaft. You can buy the shaft separately if you already own the tool, but it's cheaper to get it with the kit if you're buying for the first time. The carrying case is attractive, and fits everything with room to spare.

Some of the things you can do with your Dremel tool include drilling holes to hang pictures, putting lot numbers on your house, engraving your initials on items you don't want stolen, sharpening scissors and lawn mower blades, cleaning jewellery or golf clubs, giving sticking doors and windows a quick repair, cleaning silverware or brass or even mag rims, installing your car stereo and adding auto accessories to dress your car, trimming nails that are sticking up, regrooving damaged screw heads, sanding in hard to reach places, and so on.

It is however a small tool, so you shouldn't expect it to sand a dining table like a belt sander, or cut out a large wood pattern like a scroll saw.

You need a tiny spanner to change accessories, but it's included in the kit, along with different mandrels to hold the bits securely. There is a wide range of accessories available for even more tasks, and a great additional purchase is the tile cutting attachment, which allows you to do bathroom tile repairs with a lot less mess and guess work.

The secret to the Dremel is the speed, with a range of varying speeds up to 35,000 rpm, which you control yourself. The instruction booklet is very detailed, and gives you lots of tips. Dremel also has an amazing website, with step by step how-to guides.

Works well for some things, doesn't do everything they say
My wife bought one of these for me as a gift. I had mentioned a couple of times it might be nice to have one... I don't know what came over me. The tool works great for details and doesn't work for much else. I have used it for a number of projects where I needed to file or grind something small... screws in a part that were 1/64th of an inch too long kind of thing. It works great for that, I don't have to apply much preassure to the item being ground. I tried using it to polish a pot (it's in the list of projects to do with your dremel) ahhhh... don't bother, threw polish compound everywhere because of the speed of the tool. Works far faster with a rag by hand. Or better yet... a big buffing wheel on a bench grinder. Works well for engraving too. Haven't tried it for much else. I think my wife will end up using it more for crafts than I will for the kind of stuff I do.

A must have tool
I disagree with the negative reviews. A dremel is not a benchgrinter or an orbital polisher, etc, etc. It IS 3 pounds of power concentrated into a 2 oz bucket. If you use it for what it's meant for, it's great. In the fashion of any MultiTool, like a leatherman, it has multiple funtions in ONE tool. While a dedicated tool might do a better job in certain circumstances, it can only perform ONE funtion.

This ol' Dremel done cut me a lot of stuff
This ol' Dremel is a mighty clever tool. I used it out in the woodshed to whittle me a slingshot out of a big ol' branch from a tree. Its also good to keep Pappy away when he sneaks up on me back in that ol' woodshed. Pappy sure do love his moonshine, and it makes him a bit frisky, I reckon.

Once I done shot me a possum back behind Ol' Man Stapleton's barn and that ol' Dremel came in mighty handy, let me tell ya. I got Ol' Mr. Possum's fur coat off of him lickety split. That sharp ol' Dremel took the head and legs off as fine as ya please. Threw Mr. Possum in the pot, me an' the kinfolk had some mighty fine vittles that night, let me tell ya.

This Dremel is also mighty useful for some doctorin' at home. Mama's prone to corns n' bunions, and we ain't have no money for the doctor. So I whipped out that ol' Dremel lickety-split and cut them bunions right off of Momma's foot! You shoulda heard her holla! But them nasty ol' bunions never came back, see Momma?

Only thing I don't like about this ol' Dremel is it sounds kinda like a pig squealin'. I reckon I don't mind, cause then people don't never know if I'm out back whittlin', or havin' me some fun with some lost campers or other city slickers! Yeee Haw! ... Read more

Possibly useful for certain applications.
I bought the Dewalt Dw660sk cut out tool for a home improvement project that involved cutting a rectangular "hole"in a cement board ceiling to run a ventilation duct, and cutting openings in a kitchen cabinet so that the duct would run through the cabinet, through the ceiling and out through the roof. After removing the packaging material on this product,the first thing I noticed was the huge black plastic case this tool came in. The build quality of the case was very good. It is solid, has steel clasps, and a fair amount of room inside for the tool, handle, circle cutter attachment and various bits. The build quality of the tool itself was excellent. Its body is constructed of sturdy yellow plastic, the seams line up, the fit and finish were perfect. Even the stickers and decals were put on straight.
That might sound like a small detail to bring up, but I feel it demonstrates the care that went into assembling this tool. Some tool manufactures, like Porter Cable, seem to haphazardly "slap" on their decals and stickers and it makes you wonder how carefully the tool was assembled. This tool also has a certain heft to it, no doubt because of the big 5.0 amp motor, the biggest currently offered for this type of tool. There was virtually no vibration when turning on the tool and the motor seemed to run very smoothly at 30,000 rpm. These are the positive features of this tool.
Now for the bad. The motor is ear splittingly loud. I took a test cut into a soft pine board to see how the tool would react, and immediatley stopped and put on a pair of ear muffs. When holding the tool like a router, vertically, and cutting into a horizontal board, the ventilation slots on this tool, which are located about an inch from the spindle, blow saw dust right in your face. Wearing goggles or a face shield is mandatory! Regular glasses are not enough- you will get something in your eye! What a bad place to put the ventilation slots. Dewalt probably did this because they thought it would blow debris off the workpiece. Instead debris spews everywhere. The slots should be placed on the top of the tool to minimize saw dust or cement board dust from flying everywhere. Speaking of cement board or sheet rock, I would never use this tool inside a finished home. You will fill the room with dust. I started to cut my ceiling with this tool and switched to a sheet rock hand saw because of the dust. For an electrician or contractor cutting electric box openings or trimming sheet rock in an unfinished house this tool might be ok if you can stand the dust and noise. How does it cut? It cut the cement board fairly quickly with the bit I bought for cutting cement board. I used the supplied general purpose bit that came with the kit to cut my cabinet openings and it cut extremely slowly through the 1/2 inch pine of the cabinet. I switched to a jig saw and that worked much faster. Loading a bit in this tool is also awkward. You have push down a button on the the spindle lock and on another button simultaneously on the plastic sleeve above the spindle and then twist the plastic sleeve to tighten the collet. It's almost impossible to tighten the bit tight enough by hand to keep it from spinning in the collet. It's easier to just press down on the spindle lock and use a wrench to tighten the metal nut below the plastic sleeve to tighten a bit. Dewalt should have included a wrench to do this. As far as bit life is concerned, a 1/4" bit should be the minimum diameter you use for cutting anything. The 1/8" supplied bits are so flimsy and flex so much that I broke one of them in 1/2" soft pine. And I didn't apply hard pressure to the work piece.
Am I keeping this tool? No. I think it was poorly designed and is not very effective for wood. It works fairly well on cement board if you buy the right bit, but you could use a hand saw and create much less dust and make your cuts just as quickly. Dewalt assembled a nicely finished tool, but the design and limited functionality of this cut out tool do not add anything special to the tool industry. Jig saws, sheet rock hand saws, and hole saws can do what this tool is supposed to do more effectively and with less mess. That is why I gave this tool two stars.

EXCELENT TOOL!!
As an electrician i use this tool 5-7 times a week and cut everything- 1" thick sold oak cabinates,sheetrock,plywood of all types and thickness,ceramic tile and even use to modify plastic outlet boxes and cover plates- I've used and broke a couple rotozips in my job and this Dewalt has better power and a much better feel than the rotozip in my opinion.The noise level of this tool isn't any different than any other tool in this class and noise levels depend on meterial you are cutting. Granted i don't use the handle or circle cutter that much in my job but when you do need to cut a nice round hole the circle jig is a MUST have. The toolless bit change is also a great time saver since you do break bits fairly often with this type of tool.I highly recomend this tool and with amazons price being about $20 cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot i'm buy one right now so my boss can have his back :)

Dewalt got this one just right
This is a wonderful cut-out tool. It cuts through drywall with ease and makes a very smooth cut. You need to use both hands as it is very powerful but I haven't had any trouble keeping a straight line so far.

Like any rotary cut-out tool, it breaks bits! Keep a good supply handy and happy cutting.

5 Stars for lots of power
I have owned a roto-zip and the dremmel. They just don't have the power of this DeWalt. The circle cutter option is very handy and really does a nice job. If you are hanging drywall this of course is a must. For recessed lighting it really makes things easy. Put your drywall in place, start somwhere on the inside of the light. Work your way out to the edge, carefully work your way over the outside and then follow the outside of the light all the way around. The can will pop through and you will have a perfect cut. This is a great tool.

Rotozip RZ20 (what a rip)
I purchased this 'tool' with the intent to use it for cutting aluminum siding. I'm currently replacing windows and needed to cut the siding and enlarge the opening. I didn't get halfway through the first window before the metal cutting blade became so worn as to be worthless. Ended up using a metal cutting blade on the circular saw to finish the task. I also tried the Rotozip, with the appropriate bit, on cutting some drywall which had to be replaced. It was good for raising a lot of dust but it was quicker to use a drywall saw in the long run.
Would I buy this 'tool' again. NOT

What do ya' mean No ZipMate?!
I must disagree with that first reviewer! Bosch has made some design improvements. My Rotozip Rebel quit because of dust and debris in the switch. The cam lock had problems, as did the ZipMate. Bosch took a good design and made it a little more sturdy, enclosed the switch to prevent debris from causing it to foul and made the NEW ZIPMATE ATTACHMENT longer and easier to manuever. They also made changing the bits and attachments easier.They even added an LED light (model RZ20) to see what you're cutting. Some of the new RotoZip tools are compatible with older attachments and vise-versa. (...)

Quite a usefull tool
Bosch does make all the attachments for this series as for the last. In fact the RZ20-2100 kit comes with the cutoff/grinder attachment and circle cutter. They have actually increased the number/type of bits available as well.

There is not much else to say other than the tool itself is pretty handy and does exactly what they claim it does. No less, but no more either. It is well made and pretty solid feeling. Feels like it would survive a good working life and a few decent drops, though I'm not willing to toss mine around to assure you of that. ;o)

My first job with it was cutting out a section of the back vertical part under the top storage section of my computer desk so the monitor could be pushed back another 3-4 inches. Other choices would have been the jig saw, 3" circular saw, or a hand saw. All would have been awkward without taking the top hutch off first. This cut right through the 1" thick laminated pressboard fairly easily and I didn't even need a guide to cut a darn near straight line.

Its certainly not a required tool, or one of the first ones to go in a starting out tool collection, but if you have gotten to the point of buying any specialty or 'convenience' tools, then its a good choice. For $140 or so for the RZ20-2100 kit that includes the top line RZ20 unit, the cutter/grinder, circle cutter, a bit case, and a nice soft sided carrying case for it all, I think it is well worth it.

Serious loss of features in new design
This tool is much more limited than the original Rotozip and is misadvertized. The Amazon (and others) description states "This 5.5 amp, VS (15,000 - 30,000 rpm) tool saws, cuts, grinds, sands and polishes!" It does not! There is no longer a zipmate attachment that allows grind, sand and polish attachments. Beware that those attachments sold for "Rotozip" do not attach to the new series of units. Unfortunately, since this new series of Rotozip tool is so limited, I'm returning mine, and I recommend you consider a different tool if you want multipurpose features at all. ... Read more

It is great for wood crafts..
I now own two dremel tools.I do a lot of crafts like whirley jigs and picture frames.I like to make things myself out of wood because most of the ones you buy don't hold together but for a few years.And it is a lot of fun and takes your mind off the worldly things, like my job.Dremel tools are built good but they do wear out.I now have a router attachment and it is just like a small router.You can do small things like the State of Texas,which is bordered by rivers.The Dremel makes it easy and a lot of fun to create things.You can do almost anything with it.From whirley jigs (that work in the wind) to nice designs on picture frames.I would highly recomemd this product to any one that piddles with wood.For fun or for hobbies.If you do crafts with wood then you need one of these.I finally wore mine out,after about three years.But the first year I was a little to hard on it.Making it do what I wanted it to do instead of letting it cut the wood on it's own.

Veg-o-matic of hand tools
I've had a Dremel for several years now and it is the most versatile tool I have. I've done wood work (drilling, routing, sanding), made jewelry, cut copper pipe... I just can't say enough good about this tool, everyone should own one.

What a Relief!!!
After a year of battling our Sheltie every time we had to clip his nails, we finally have peaceful grooming. The dremel is amazing! It is easy to use and it doesn't cause bleeding if you get a little too close to the quick, it also doesn't split the nail. This is a great product and has made grooming so comfortable, Zeke now just falls asleep on my lap while I trim his nails. If you are looking to make nail clipping more comfortable for you and your dog, this is the product you need.

Great product! Only wish i'd found it sooner...
A friend lent me her Dremel today to try on my 14-year-old dog who HATES having his nails trimmed. I was amazed that a) he didn't object to it at all, and b) it made quick work of filing his nails down to a healthy length.

The Dremel seems far better than any of the nail clippers i've tried: i had no worries about accidentally cracking the nail or cutting to the quick. And although the abrasive pad was tough enough to wear down my dog's nails in a matter of minutes, it didn't hurt when i accidentally grazed my hand with it a couple of times.

This model is light, not too noisy, and easy to grip/use. Best of all, it's not outrageously expensive! (Costs about as much as you'd pay two or three nail clippings at a groomer.)

I was so impressed that i'm buying a Dremel of my own tonight. Wish i'd discovered this years ago!

This is the safest and least traumatic for dogs!
This tool is the best for dogs nails. I've trimmed/done my dogs nails with it about 10 times. It's quiet for a tool so as not to freak out dogs. After two times she(My shelty) got used to it and now doesn't mind having her nails done at all. While sitting on the floor, I flip her on her back between my legs and grab one foot at a time and do them. Unlike conventional clippers or guillotine shears, which can cut through the quick and hurt the dog and make them bleed, the Dremel quickly sands the nail back and if you hit the quick, it doesn't cut it, it's just like rubbing an emory board on your skin. The manual shows the basic technique and shape for sanding the nails. Using this sanding technique also prevents sharp edges on the nail which can snag clothing. It also prevents split nails unlike conventional clippers. This is one of the best new gadgets for pets in a long time and the benefits are so obvious! Do you all work for Black and Decker?
It's a great idea but if you are going to do a day or weekend long project that would require one or more of the attachments, get extra batteries! The only attachments that didn't kill the battery quickly were the drill and maybe the saw wasn't great. The other pieces especially the router and jigsaw drained both batteries noticably in about 15 minutes. I've found the router adequate only for edge and laminate work but way underpowered for anything else.
Don't even get me started on the safety start mechanism. You must depress a button on the attachments before the trigger will engage. This is especially maddening and awkward with the router.
Save your money and buy the real versions of each tool you really need instead of this poor compromise on all of them.

I LOVE mine! What a fantastic deal! No complaints...
I first saw the Black and Decker multi-tool at Home Depot, but the one they had only had 3 tools and was only 12 volts. (Still pretty cool.) This one has FIVE tools and is 14.4 volts. All the tools are great. You get two batteries, and they last a long time. I'd rate this as one of the best values in tools I've ever purchased. I love my Black and Decker multi-tool. (One improvement though... a catchier name...)

Looks like a great product
I just ordered this product and it looks to be exactly what I need. I just need power tools to do small projects around the house. This is a perfect mult-tool product for me. Just the basics is all I need. I don't need a top of the line circular saw, jigsaw, etc. I just need something that will handle the small projects that I work on and this appears to be exactly what I need.

The lastest and the best
I bought my first Dremel (a Model 2) in 1947. It finally gave up in 1993. Since then I have added the single speed and multispeed Multipro models to my tool box. Now the digital model comes along and is the best of the best. Its soft start, dependable speed control, and high power make it equal to any job. It fits all the Dremel attachments making it every bit as adaptable as the others. It handles all the cutting, shaping, finishing, and polishing tasks involved in my construction of miniatures and architectural models.

Glad the old one blew!
I had a Dremel Model 280 for many years and it served well. It was a single-speed model, so I had to buy a separate speed control for it. Two years ago, it suddenly blew up in my hand when a commutator section dislodged. Fortunately, the 3981 was on sale in a kit that included the flex shaft and a lot of attachments. As soon as I used it, I was happy the old one blew up! I love the soft-start, integrated speed control that doesn't bog down at low speeds, and it gives you a readout too. The biggest improvement is that it doesn't get too hot to hold after a few minutes of hard use, like the 280 did even when it was new. I used the 3981 with the grout removal attachment to take up some irreplaceable mosaic tile. It burned up a few bits, but not my hands.

The only downside is that I had to purchase all new attachments to fit the nose piece. Dremel even helped out there, by making up a new support arm for my D-Vise base to fit the new tool at a moderate cost. That allows the tool to be stationary while working on small pieces. This is the best rotary tool I've ever used!

The all around tool made even better
What seperates this Dremel from the others you ask? Well for starters it allows you to control the RPM's electronically. From 5 to 30k RPM's you can finally gain a sense of complete control over any situation with this tool. Using it primarily to Modify my computer cases and other strange little nuances of mine I can go from plastic to steel in the touch of a button without having to worry about melting plastic or taking forever to cut through metal.

However my dremel has found very other useful activites as well. The grout attachment works wonders in the bathroom and kitchen and I fixed the gate on my wife's horse's stall with it as well as modified my desk with it (I needed a couple extra slots for my computer cables).

I guess the only downside to this Dremel is the flimsy control switch. Well its not really flimsy but it does rattle when you bump up the RPM's.

Overall I am very pleased with the many different uses the Dremel finds itself in while in my hands. The addition of the electronic control switch for manipulating the RPM's is a godsend as it offers so much more flexibility than the older Dremels. This particular case comes with an assorment of goodies (including the universal chuck) so you really shouldn't have to buy any other accessories with the exception of some of the other specialized tool sets or the flex attachment.

Well in conclusion this little tool is BIG enough to handle most any application a hobbiest or tinkerer can put it through. Its uses are infinite and is simple enough to be operated by anyone...with the exception of the little tikes wandering around the place...and is a very useful tool to have around the house or shop.

Top-of-the-line Dremel
If you appreciate quality tools, and want the most out of whatever tool you use, go with the Pro model. The electronic speed control is great for selecting, and more importantly, holding, precise speeds. It has more power than the other Dremels too. It's comfortable to use, has a long cord, and the standard accessories fit.

The original got better!
I like the newer improvements Bosch made on the Rotozip spiral saw compared with the original model. The RZ-10 model has the newer tacky feel, a bigger amp motor,an adjustable speed, chuckless, and can be easily converted back to a chuck type with the spindle & spindle nut off my original saw.(For working in tight places as needed.)The handle can easily & quickly be removed. It pays to take your time when cutting with it for the bits may break when pushed too hard. This is one tool one needs to cut in various places when the other saws will not fit or work. The switch & fan slip problems were fixed by Bosch also.
In my personal opinion, this tool has a learning curve but a handy dandy tool when working on projects & in the house.

great tools, expensive to use
I used this to replace a shower valve - cut out some tiles, some drywall, it was an absolute dream, couldn't imagine how fast it was at work I was dreading. The bits are a big problem. I have gone through 4 tile cutting bits now (at about 6 clams a pop) - about one per foot of cutting, and I am someone with a gentle touch with tools - I have never broken a jig saw blade or drill bit.

Great tool
I've had this tool for quite a while, and use it all the time. Easiest way to make clean cuts in metal, brick (with diamond cutoff blade), drywall, etc. Also, the only tool I've found for doing blind cuts into a corner, like when replacing a single hardwood floor board.

I haven't had the bit-life problems another reviewer mentioned; it might be they need a carbide tip. The only significant problem I've run into is getting into tight spaces; taking the base off helps, but the body is still a little wider than I'd like.

Great Tool.....Lousy Bits
I am a home improvement junkie and enjoy doing projects around the house. The wife & I are looking to buy a new home and we decided to get the house in tip-top condition before we sell.

I am in the process of installing a laminate floor that replicates the look of ceramic tiles in the foyer. I wanted the Roto Zip tool to make the cuts.

The tool works great, however, the bits wear out so fast cutting through the laminate. My old sabre saw using fine tooth blades last alot longer.

I am debating whether to return the tool to Amazon now and go back to using the sabre saw. The way I am going, I will have to buy another 15-20 bits to complete this project. ... Read more

Versatile, Must-Have Tool
I have had this tool for going on ten years now and it's still going strong (with the original set of brushes). I am a silversmith and use it with the flex shaft attachement almost daily. I can honestly say many fine grinding jobs I do would be next to impossible to do without it. We used to use a Fordom brand flex shaft tool, but the handpiece was too bulky and it didn't have enough RMPs to do the job as well as the Dremel. It looks like Dremel has gone a little nuts with all the attachements they offer now, making it even more versatile. In my mind, it is one of those Must-Have tools every shop needs.

Endless Possibilities
I have owned the Multi-Pro kit for 8 months now, and I don't know how I lived without it before. The jobs it can do are limited only by your imagination. The variable speed lets you match the speed to the work. It cleans and sharpens all my other power tools, lawn mower blades, too. It makes cuts in all types of materials in tight places for remodeling jobs; you know, under sinks and floors, inside walls and ceilings. I especially like the cutting wheels (careful, they are brittle) to flush cut nails and screws, or shape small metal pieces. I've used them to grind out welds when repairing tricycles for the preschool where my wife teaches. With the sanding drums, I've smoothed and shaped small wooden projects. I plan on taking the Multi-Pro to 4H Summer Camp this year for the woodworking class I teach. Remember to go slow and make several passes when cutting material for best results. I've done it.
I've actually used it on my natural nails, whether it says you can or not. I use it on low speed with a large stone bit (purchased seperately from Dremel -they have many bits available for their rotary tools). Keep in mind though that I'm a guy and I bite my nails(bad habit I know), but the tool helps me straighten them out.

Fills without the fuss
It costs $15+ to get a fill at a manicurist -- the tool pays for itself in less than six weeks (sooner if you aren't lazy about upkeep like I am :)). In defense of the product and to counter the one bad review: Who the heck would try to use a Dremel tool on natural nails?????

New Rotozip
The new rotozip is fantastic! The 3-jaw chuck works great (works like my drill). It also comes with a wrench to manually tighten the collet if you prefer to do this. I have been cutting wall tile with the rotozip brand tile bits and they have been breaking on me, which has been frustrating. I switched to a Dremel tile bit, and I have had no problems.

Nuts
So, how well does that new wrenchless chuck with the red wheel work? Vizualize the bit falling out twice the first time you cut the sheetrock out of a window opening. Vizualize a tool which NEEDS a wrench, but unlike the previous models is not designed to be tightened with a wrench and provides no place to store a wrench. The wrenchless chuck gives a whole new meaning to the words "reverse engineering".

And BTW, if you had any attachments for your old style rotozip forget em - they won't fit the new models according to the Rotozip website. ... Read more

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A ROTO-ZIP AS AN AID FOR INSTALLING WALL TILE. AFTER A 1/4 INCH CUT INTO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS WALL TILE THE CARBIDE BIT BROKE. I WAS NOT VERY IMPRESSED. ALSO THE OVERALL FEEL, QUALITY AND POWER DISAPPOINTED. I RETURNED THE TOOL. I THEN ORDERED THE DEWALT CUT-OUT TOOL. I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE QUALITY, FEEL AND POWER OF THIS TOOL. The Drywaller's Dream
I hang drywall for a living and have accustomed myself to using the Rotozip for cutting out outlets, vents, etc. and got used to its lack of power and durability; until last week. I purchased the new DeWalt Cut-out tool and can't believe the difference in power and comfort. DeWalt really did their homework on this one. It also has a tool-free bit change which is awesome. It makes changing bits quicker and easier and I never have to have a wrench around. Drop whatever you're using and get the DeWalt.

The superiority of this outstanding DeWalt cut-out tolls forced the present manufacturers to redisign thier models.All rotory tools made after, have based thier disign after the DW660 .It is the OLNY toolless bit changable model avbailabvle .The Porter cable is made with too big of a head and the on/off switch is not convientient.THIS IS truly THE BEST !!! A real drywallers dream .I should know because I was hanging when you had to make all cuts with keyhole saws &/OR the only available router was a Black N Decker that clearly stated in the warrannty that it was not designed for drywall and would void the warranty ..Shure am thankful for Dewalts intelligence...

Buy a RotoZip
Good tool but bulky and over powered. I bought mine when only the tool was avialible. If I bought it today I'd buy the kit, but would definitely consider the RotoZip Kit as well it's $20 more but it's made by Bosch.

Weekend warrior and rennovator
Fantastic cutout saw! Easier to hold than the Porter Cable and I like the on/off buttons better than the PC. While cutting out large segments of drywall (like doors and windows), the PC you have to leave running if your hands are full (of cut off drywall etc.) or manipulate your grip down towards the bit while it's running to shut off the tool. The DeWalt is much easier to just "bump" the top (furthest from the spinning bit) against your chin to shut off the tool. Maybe not the recommended method but it works great when your hands are full.

No problems with the tool whatsoever. Just wish the bits cut faster (same with all the cutout tools). Not having to use/find or lose an allen wrench is a definite advantage although the two buttons used to loosen/tighten the collet take a little getting used to. Having a case to hold the tool and spare bits is also nice.

Excellent!
I read these reviews often but had never been moved to write one until now as this is one of the first products that exceeded my expectations.

I had a medium size dry wall project coming up and had heard about these rotary saws but after reading the reviews for them all, I was in doubt: everyone said the DeWalt and Rotozip were loud, messy, difficult to control, and broke bits off often. I like Bosch's products so I decided to take a chance on it. It has been great. I have now finished the project and I can say that all the complaints about the other models do not apply to the Bosch. It is not too loud nor does it send a cloud of dust in one's face. After a couple of cuts it was easy to control and I used the same bit for two weeks without it breaking or seemingly going dull. I have not tried it with real hard surfaces like tile but so far it has been tremendous. It has saved so much time and seems so well made. I liked it so much that I hope this review helps others who are deciding what product to buy.

pleasantly surprised
I got this as a Christmas present, and just now used it for the first time to engrave my cellphone. I had been wondering how easy it would be to control, but am glad to report that the result was as small & legible as what can be achieved with pen and paper.

Great Tool
I bought this engraver with birthday money from a discount store last fall, after researching it online. It will leave its mark on just about anything you would want. I like the variable speed settings which allows you to match the work to the material. I have used it to initial all my tools so there is no mistaking who it belongs to. It works on hardened steel as well as plastic. My wife uses it for craft projects in her pre-school teaching job.

Reliable & Easy to Use
This engraver works incredibly well. Although it looks unweildy, its very easy to control and engrave clearly. In fact, my engravings turned out to look just like my handwriting. I've used it to engrave tools and other metal and steel products, and it has done it with ease. I've had one for several years now, and its still an excellent & reliable engraver.

Very Disappointing
I borrowed a Roto-Zip on one or more occasions and I liked it. I was very happy when I received one as a gift. I was very disappointed though when I used the cut-off attachment and I could not get the cut-off wheel off! The lock down button went in, but could not keep the unit from spinning. The plastic had parted to the side. Now I will have to go through the aggravation of getting it repaired, or even better, sending it back. Thanks for wasting my time ROTO-ZIP! Like a Dremel, but with POWER!
I've owned a dremel for over 5 years. We just moved, and I could not find it, apparently hidden deep within our catacombs of packed boxes. It was just the excuse I needed to upgrade. Alas, I saw the RTX tool, an apparently updated Dremel. The RTX attachments and chuck appear to be similar to a Dremel, but the RTX has enough power to be a "real tool". I'm very satisfied with this purchase. I will be giving this gift to many on my Christmas list this year. Other Dremel improvements (over my old Dremel anyway) * Better case, much larger, with a separate tool holder. The dremel sometimes required a crow bar to get the tool into the case and close it. * Better speed control * flip up chuck lock to simplify chucking/unchucking attachments BTW, I use the tool mostly for trim work as a way to finish up coped joints. On quarter round, it does the entire job.

FAR superior to Dremel - here's why:
I'd wanted a Dremel for a long time but couldn't resist when I saw a basic (the RTX-3) kit on sale for half as much, with nearly 2x the power!

PROS: A) 2 amps vs. Dremel's 1.2 gives you far better cutting power (I hardly ever need any setting but Low speed!) B) The flip-lever spindle lock is FAR easier to use than a collet-locking button - you never need a tool to change parts, and it locks out the power switch (so you can't accidentally hit the collet lock with the power on - very annoying and possibly breaking the tool). C) It's just plain better-looking than the Dremel. ;-)

CONS: B&D needs to get their act together on accessories and dealers who stock them - and/or let us know whether/which Dremel or Craftsman accessories fit the RTX! I could really use a drill press, router, or flexible extension accessory, and can't seem to find them anywhere in stores (the website isn't too helpful, here, either)

Overall, though, much more power for a much better price - Dremel's needed the competition for a long time, and B&D delivered. (I'll give 'em 5 stars when they get the accessory & distribution thing improved.)

Broke on third use, customer service doesn't appear to exist
I bought this to do some tile and wood work around the house. During the first two uses of this tool I was quite happy with what I was able to accomplish with it. However, on only my third use the chuck lock jammed. For those of you that aren't aware of what that is, it is a metal spring loaded pin that stops the chuck from rotating when changing and removing drills, bits, etc. What I discovered is that this pin, while engaging the metal of the chuck is stabilized by the plastic housing of the unit. This would seem to me to be both a major design flaw and something that could be easily and inexpensively remedied in future units. The plastic had given way and now the chuck lock has been rendered useless. I contacted the retailer of the unit who told me that I had must have "abused" the unit and they refused to accept the return. I have attempted to contact Black and Decker directly via their customer service contact form on their web site to no avail. I have never received a response to either of the two inquiries that I made. What I thought would be a nice tool for the price turned into a lemon very quickly. This is the last Black and Decker tool I'll ever buy.

It's okay
I'm by no means a person who has any familiarity with power tools, but one day I decided that it would be useful to get a rotary tool to deal with certain things around the house. Perhaps my expectations were a little high, but once I started using this tool, I realized that it had very limited potential. It works well enough for sanding, so long as the part to be sanded is in the open and unobstructed. But in terms of cutting and and de-rusting, it's not that great of a use. At one point I was making chainmail, and tried using the tool to cut the rings of, but the so-called heavy duty cut-off disks either blew apart or rapidly ground down too next to nothing. Granted, the tool did come in handy at times, and so it was not a complete waste. It does seem to have more than adequate power, and fortunately my tool has worked fine since I bought it.

The worst customer service!
I realize that nothing is perfect. For $60 I don't expect RTX to be an Industrial tool. I did however expected it to work longer than 15 minutes! After the second use, the chuck lock failed and I had to use a small screw driver to unlock the chuck. After the 5th use, the speed controller failed. It started to hiccup while working. The sixth time I went to use the tool, it seized and smoke came out of it! Total life of this unit was about 15 minutes. I bought it more than 60 days ago so the retailer will not exchange it. I have written to Black and Decker through their web site several times. I have not heard anything from them. I realize, I may have a lemon. Not having any information from the manufacturer is the worst part. I am buying a second one now. This time I am going with Dremel.
