Amazon.com Review

Whether you're new to spiral saws or an experienced pro, theRotozip Revolution is one tool you'll be happy to add to your arsenal.Solidly built and attractive, the Rotozip Revolution can cut throughvirtually any material cleanly and with greater accuracy than other, less maneuverable tools, such as jig saws or routers. The attached ZipMate allows you to cut through metal, masonry, and even stone withlittle effort. An easy-grip handle snaps off and locks on tight, whileonboard tool storage makes bit changes hassle-free. Two onpositions--one for continuous action and one for use with thetrigger--add to the overall convenience of the tool. And the pushbuttonspeed control lets you shift gears on the fly for jobs that requireadjustable rpm. --Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ROTOZIP Revolution saw w/ Zipmate
Tool cuts about anything as advertized. Care must be taken when installing bits to ensure small portion of smooth shank is visible (bits break easily otherwise). The 4.5 amp rating is actually 5 amp UL rating (notice comes with spiral saw). If you want to cut floor tiles you must buy the diamond zBLADE used by the Zipmate attachment (additional 19.99 to 24.95 depending on where you get it). No other way with this saw to cut floor tiles reliably.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tool, but not perfect.
This tool has come in very handy for me and my workers. It's been great for removing cracked ceramic tile in showers (using masonary disk), cutting stucco, etc. If you get one, make sure you ALWAYS wear safety goggles. The one time I didn't I had a piece of stucco hit my eyeball and it was extremely painful (am fortunate it hit the white part of the eye).

What I dislike about this tool is the on/off switch. It is so bad that I could see someone having an accident with it. The switch is a slippery piece of plastic that you have to pull to turn it on and it's not easy to get a grip on.

I also don't like the cheesy plastic case. The mfg. should include a metal case or at a minimum a quality plastic case.

I haven't had great luck with the bits (they always seem to break).

Even though there are a couple negative things about this tool, I would definitely buy it again. It has become indispensable to me and gets used regularly in renovating apartment units.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great home handyman tool
One of those tools you thought you might not need but are now darn glad you have. You'll wonder if this tool will help with pretty much every challenging cutting angle or clearance issue. Used the accessories almost from day 1, so the combo makes sense. No regrets.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the HOME user, it is a MUST have
Myself, I'm a lowly home owner. I bought this tool, because of it's maneuverability and speed with which it cuts. For roughing in flooring in my attic, it performed better than any tool I have ever owned. The power, cable and phonewires in my attic were easily managed by cutting a quarter inch deep trench in the 2x4's, such that the plywood wouldn't crush them. I then was able to freehand cut the plywood around the roofing supports. All said and done, I had my attic completely floored in about 3 hours. It would have taken several weekends of my time using conventional jigsaws, or hauling stuff up and down the ladder.

I cannot dispute the issues of the fan blade; I do not doubt that this happens with commercial use. However, for the home user it has not been a problem for me. I gave it 4 stars, instead of 5 stars for the simple reason that I agree with the commercial users. The fan should be able to withstand the temperatures the tool will generate in continuous use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Revolution design flaw
I have been using the Revolution spiral cut tool for a few months in a professional capacity, previously using the Dremel for drywall cuts. The Revolution shaft lock has be redesigned which is good news, the old design would fall apart with minimal useage. I am on my third Revolution now within 5 months. Its a great for cutting drywall, however if you use the tool for harder materials such as plywood, hardyboard, OSB, or particle board expect a drastically shortened tool life. I use this tool because it will not crack or split Formica. Heat generated while cutting, travels up the shaft and begins to melt the plastic fan blade. With the fan's tight tolerance to the housing, it begins to drag causing more noise and quicker failure from wobble at 30,000 rpm. A few countertop sink cutouts is all this tool can handle in 3/4" particle board before failure, with changing the bit 3 or 4 times for each sink to insure a sharp bit. Maybe if you could allow the tool to cool for 30 minutes for every 5 minutes of cutting, it would last longer, however this in impractical with a customer standing over you. And there is only a one year warranty from original purchase. Since they replace the tool and not repair it, the warranty should begin a new period. This would force them into incorporating a billet aluminum fan blade more quickly. Its hell to be at customers and have a tool failure. Maybe I should become a dealer and carry a few Revolutions in stock on my truck and perhaps even bill the customer for a new tool each time i use it, under consumables. ALWAYS WEAR EAR PLUGS AND SAFETY GLASSES WHILE USING THIS TOOL. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for drywall O.K. for other things
No one can dispute. This is a great drywall cutter. Electrical boxes are truly a breeze , as are door and window openings. Other companies have tried to copy the design , but no one has improved on it. I like the extra bit and wrench storage on the tool. It's kind of easy to open the bit cover and lose the bits though. The commercials show the tool cutting perfect lines in a variety of materials. It takes A LOT of practice to cut freehand with this thing. The spinning bit causes the tool to climb off of the cut line. For rough cuts it works O.K. For finish cuts forget it. For any soft material like wood or plastic you are far better off with a jig saw. For hard materials like tile it's a little better. Jigs help a lot for cutting cleaner lines. Just don't push it very hard or you'll be putting in a new bit every thirty seconds. For drywall this is a must have tool. For woodworking or hobby I think its usefulness is very marginal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Try using the right bit !!!!
I'm sure the guy with the plaster wall was using the wrong bit. If your cutting plaster you need to use the carbide bit. dahhh... I own a home theater design & installation company. When we switched to Rotozips from hand saws we saved 1-2 hours a day on installations. Its GREAT for everything from drywall to cutting out cabinet backs to fit larger TVs. As we speak I'm working in my own house which has plaster walls and I'm using it for everything from speakers to lighting. Tip: Always use layout lines to cut on. Don't try to "wing it" with no lines.
As far as noise... only an {fool} would use any power tool with out hearing protection. Why do you think they sell earplugs? I checked the noise level with a sound lever meter and my shop vac makes more noise.
I consider it one of the most valuable tools on my truck after my cordless drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I own my own drywall company. I have purchased similar tools from Dewalt, Ryobi, Dremel because I run two hanging crews and not only need another tool cut out tool for my other crew, but also thought they may be an upgrade. I have to say that none of the other tools were nearly as durable. They all had good attributes to them but all have quit working and my original Rotozip has just kept chugging along. I would recomend this product to anyone who is going to really work their cut out tool. I use mine almost every day and it still cuts clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for removing old tile
I had some exceedingly nasty tile to remove - the grout was more like stucco. A fair amount of research led me to the Grout Grabber.

After struggling with a Grout Grabber for a few hours and getting a moderate amount of work done, a buddy recommended a Rotozip, and loaned me his. A quick trip to the hardware store for a diamond blade and I was in business. The Rotozip did the trick. It was fast, went through the grout like my circular saw goes through wood. It also went through the chicken wire that was holding the mortar in place, throwing off some lovely (but harmless) sparks.

Note that I didn't use the carbide grout bit, which I tried and found to be useless. I used a circular diamond blade intended for tile, cement and so forth. Note as well that this blade isn't recommended for the speed of the cheaper Rotozip, but that's what I had and it worked.

Anyway, the combination of the Rotozip RTM01 with RotoZip ZM101 and the Dry Diamond blade worked like a dream. There is another Rotozip with adjustable speed that should work as well and perhaps be safer.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
I am a long time wood worker and I hhave never seen such a bad tool on the market. I bought thisd thinking that I could take to the job site and get alot of use out of it. But I can not cut anything out nicly with it amd it needs a belt sander to clean the cut up on the cut part. The saw is not good for anything. If I have a hard time using it how it simeone going to use it with no woodworking back round. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Paint removal
I live in a rental home where the bathroom baseboard paint was about 30 layers deep and about 15 years old (I say was, because after my Rotozip experience, its allll gone).

We tried several things to remove the paint with little or no luck. A friend of mine recently purchased a Rotozip tool kit, so off to his house I went.

I selected the 120 grit disk because of the rougher look and feel of the disk. When I started sanding the old, thick, globby, runny paint the Rotozip disk was like a wild animal, devouring the paint down to the bare wood.

Fast, controllable and efficient...... Just add a Rotozip kit to my Christmas wishlist Ma.

Then I started to look at the spots where the Landlord had done a poor job with the Drywall mud, a little zip here and a zip there, smooth and ready for paint. If a 120 grit pad works this well, I cant wait to try the rest.

I reccomend this product to all. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Proper Alignment Helps
I have found that the best alignment of this pinion gear for smooth operation of the Zipmate attachment, when used on the new Rebel tool, is to leave a 1/8 inch space between the gear and the top of the collet nut. It's not in the owner's manual, I had to experiment a little to discover this optimal placement. A little machine oil on the gear shaft tips and the collet helps, too. ... Read more
