You need power, but you don’t want to hoist a ton. Here’s the answer. DeWalt’s revamped 18-volt compact drill/driver delivers on both counts, with a 1/2-inch chuck that grips beefy bits, an 18-position adjustable clutch, and a high-performance motor for the torque you need, packaged in a truly lightweight, comfortable drill. The variable speed has a high and low range for any application, and the reverse switch is right above the curved trigger for easy access. The included charger juices up a spent battery in an hour. We especially like the light weight, even more so because it doesn’t cost in the power department. Lots of pluses: on-board bit storage, two batteries, hard case. We think contractors will be pleased with this drill, especially after a long day.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Features

  • 1/2" single sleeve keyless ratcheting chuck for tighter bit grip
  • Compact size: fits into the tightest conditions
  • Lightweight design (5.2 lbs.) minimizes user fatigue
  • High performance motor delivers 450 in.-lbs. of maximum torque
  • Dual speed range: 0-450 / 0-1,500 rpm delivers optimal performance

5-0 out of 5 stars Four Years' Tough
I have two of these drills. Have used one or the other of them daily for three years this month. About time for a review. They are tough. I do not understand the comments about weak chucks or, in other places, about battery problems. My drills, their batteries and chargers have performed, as I say, on a daily basis for three years under all kinds of conditions and some very hard use without so much as a glitch. They have tremendous torque and staying power under continuous use. If you are going to shoot large screws or drive a big bit rapidly into very hard or though wood, brace the drill-driver's grip, battery end against your knee or thigh before you squeeze the trigger. You will have fewer wrist problems if you do--it has that kind of torque. Regarding one complaint, I would not use this driver with tiny drill bits; it just is not intended for that. It defies logic to do so. What it will do is take the heaviest work and drive large bits and sink big screws all day and just keep on going. An example: In the intense, 100 degree plus heat of one summer, two carpenter friends and I laid a 1700 sq foot subfloor of 2X6 T&G over 16" OC joists with two 3-1/2 inch screws to the joist, working as fast as we could all day for what seems now like several days. The wood was very tough, dense struc select Doug fir. When my two friends' drivers, one a Makita and one a Hitachi, got hot as pistols or their batteries needed recharging, whichever of the DeWalts I happened to be using could keep right on going. I would lend the other DeWalt to either guy while his driver recovered. I smoked those batteries, but by following the right charging procedures never had a failure. They both still take deep cycle charges and hold them well, after three years of hard use. One took a fourteen foot fall off a roof while mounted to another DeWalt tool, the battery taking the full impact on tamped crushed rock, and it still works as well as the others. Just read the instructions and you will not have trouble with the batteries. Quick charge when you have to, but balance that with long charges from a low state over the weekends. Never use the batteries while they are still warm or hot out of the charger, do not run them out completely--just nearly so, and do not repeatedly shallow charge them. Nicads will not last long with that kind of treatment. They take a "set" and will not charge deeply afterward. As for weak chucks, well, one incident does not make them all that way. When my drywall zipgun stripped its chuck, I picked up one of my DeWalt 18V drill-drivers and kept on going--for over 300 sheets of 1/2 and 5/8 inch drywall. The clutch and speed mechanisms work well enough that I had good control and could hang drywall almost as fast as with the zipgun. One caution regarding the clutches on these brutes: they require breaking in; don't be upset if they are hard to use at first. You can see from this what DeWalt 18V drill-drivers have done and can do, and still I have not had the slightest problem, though they look pretty beat up now. I do not think a single work day has passed in which I have not used one of the two. Now I have a whole lot of DeWalt HD 18V tools, because these two drill-drivers performed so well I was not afraid to buy into a lot of tools in the same line. I have had no trouble with any of them. You never lose them, either; that DeWalt yellow shouts at you from across the room, across the lot or from under a pile of tools and offcuts. When these go, I will buy more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drill/driver
I have had this drill for about six months and am very happy with it. I am a homeowner so I can't speak as to how this drill would function during all day use. For projects around my house it has plenty of power although, like every other cordless tool I have used, it needs a little more time drilling/driving through hard wood. If I want to drill through something thick and tough, I used a beefier corded drill. So far, I have not noticed any of the battery life problems discussed by other reviewers.

I picked up a set of the Dewalt hex shank bits and have not noticed any slippage. The only time I have had a complaint with the drill was while using a hole saw to install locksets in two doors. Of the four holes, the bit slipped out of the chuck two times. Once I reinserted the hole saw it went right on through the door. I don't know if I didn't get the chuck tight enough or if the chuck just prefers the hex shank bits.

All in all a great drill. I can't imagine ever installing curtain rods, assembling bookcases, etc. with a corded drill and/or screwdriver again!

1-0 out of 5 stars Yet another over-priced, under-achiever from big yellow
This drill is, in short, a dud. I bought it somewhat hesitantly on the recommendation of a friend. I had been looking at this and the Milwaukee and Bosch equivalents but went ahead and took the plunge. What a mistake. It seems to have sufficient torque but the chuck started to wobble almost immediately after only a few weeks of light use. It makes a grinding noise in the low speed setting that I can't seem to find and one of the batteries ... died after only 2-3 months use. Since then the charger .... has also given up making it cheaper to buy a whole new kit (probably what dewalt has in mind anyway). I have since bought the Milwaukee 0624-20 (kit 0624-24)and have been abusing that workhorse for over a year now with phenomenal results while this piece of crap collects dust on the shelf. Not only are the batteries ..... and charger .... cheaper to replace by some $40 but they also last a _lot_ longer. I wish now I had gone with my gut instinct in the first place. Save yourself a lot of grief and money and go for the Milwaukee. You will not be sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars quaility control
i have owned three of these drills over the last seven years,i was very impressed the first time i used the 18 volt drill about five years ago and immeadiatly bought one. since that time i have noticed a serious decline in craftsmanship and customer service on DeWalt's part. the chucks spin on expensive drill bits damaging the bit,the battery packs seem to have unreliable longievity issues. the final straw was a blown charger after approx. 40 hrs. plug in time, right in the middle of a elaborate garage remodel. i am going to start phaseing out my DeWalt cordless tools in my personal tool chest as well as the ones owned by the Parks and Recreation Dept. I am in charge of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good drill for the money
I purchased this drill as part of a drill/saw combo at Home Depot for $199 so go there for a better deal. I bought this drill to compliment the 18V Dewalt pistol handle drill I already have.

I know what your thinking, why do I need two drills? Have you every tried to drill/drive in between stud cavities with a pistol grip?? Pain in the bottom to do, so when I have that type of work to do I just grab this one, now onto my review.

Plenty of power for anything you may want to do, drives screws like a champ, drills through 4x4 PT with 1 1/2" spade bit with no problems. A great drill at a great price. Since I own their more expensive model I will point out the differences. No hammer action, only 2 speed(don't need the third speed), 2 piece chuck versus the 1 piece, and the handle doesn't have those nice rubber inserts.

Doesn't handle small bits that well due to the chuck design, and the trigger sticks a little when trying to slowly advance it.
One piece of advice, before you even use the drill for the first time grab some athletic tape(Walmart sells black athletic tape so it doesn't look retarded) and wrap it a couple of time around the handle. That improves the grip 100%, trust me.

Even though I did bash some things this is still a awesome drill. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When it comes to power and versatility, the DeWalt DW983K-214.4-volt cordless drill/driver kit delivers. Powered by DeWalt'sexclusive XR battery packs, the DW983K-2 is a solid performer invirtually any environment. All-metal gearing and a metal gear caseensure the tool's ruggedness from top to bottom, while a third, fasterspeed (up to 1,800 rpm--a full 29 percent faster than comparable drills)allows the DW983K-2 to tackle many high-speed jobs that two-speeddrill/drivers can't handle nearly as effectively. The DW983K-2 is easyto operate, with clearly marked controls and a comfort-grip handledesigned to reduce fatigue. Couple that with a tighter bit grip andhigher torque (up to 400 in./lbs.), and it's easy to see why theDW983K-2 has quickly become such a popular choice with the pros.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great power Makes a great Dewalt cordless drill even better!
I purchased the new Dewalt 14.4 cordless drill a couple of weeks ago, locally this time I'm afraid, I just saw it listed in my new Tool Crib catalog. Thank you for such a great selection of tools, if its new and out their The Tool Crib will probably have it. Just a thought, in order to entice more people to purchase on line from you and have them willing to wait for their product to be shipped you might want to offer a deal, something more then the competition, or at least a bonus for buying from you.
As for the drill itself I have had nothing but Dewalt cordless drills for porbably 10 years or so. I tried another brand once but returned it immediatly and went back to a Dewalt. Dewalt may be alittle pricey on there cordless drills but for the professional who uses it as much as I do it is in my opion, hands down the best on the market. This new line of heavy duty Cordless drills are amazing. I was needing to build a 45' wheel chair ramp and had a lot of 4' lag bolts to drive. I was amazed by the torque of this new 14.4 drill it drove the lag bolts with so much power I snaped my socket adapter off. I was going to get an 18 volt this time but decided that I would get the 14.4 heavy duty and try it since I already had an old 14.4 and could interchange the batteries, I also just like the weight and size better. As for the power I think this new 14.4 is capable of most jobs, I still wish the batteries would last a little longer though. There are 2 other little things that I'm not sure of and that kept me from giving this drill a 5th *. The drill is so powerful that when driving the lag bolts the housing of the drill felt like it was trying to come apart. I need to check the srews that hold the housing together and tighten if nessessary, maybe that's all it is. The other thing is the key less chuck. I'm not convince it is better then the old model. It slipped several times when I did not have the hex shank of the bit aligned properly, I did not have this problem on my old drill and making sure the bit is aligned properly is kind of a pain and takes more time, this also worries me about round bit shafts. To sum it all up though, Dewalt is still the best out there and this drill just got better. The 14.4 is perfect in balance and weight and now the added power makes it a perfect choice. Oh, one more minor thing to Dewalt, the old style drill had 2 spots on top of the drill for your screw bits and now this new model has just one on the bottom by the battery. Some times the saying "don't change a good thing!" SHOULD BE LISTENED TOO!! CHANGE IT BACK!! (there are more then 1 type of screws!!!) Over all though, an excellent drill as usual from Dewalt!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Just missed 5 stars
Like another reviewer, I found a serious lack of control on the torque settings. At low speed the torque is extremely high; so high that it is useless for driving screws in pine or other soft woods. Even in red oak, it's too high and tends to drive the screws through the wood.

At medium speed, the clutch works a little better, but still lacks control when driving screws into wood. When the clutch is set to the lowest position (1) it will work when driving screws into common studs or other wood of this type. The torque control is still not there however. This control is really needed because of the high torque this drill has.

As another user mentioned, the speed changer does hang up sometimes. It seems to depend on where the drill gears stop. Sometime it clicks right in, other times the trigger has to be toggled to get it to switch... I did not think this was a major problem. It's easy to nudge the trigger and switch speeds. But you should not have to do this.

The batteries run about as long as other drills I have. The drill is about as heavy as other drills I have.

This cordless drill has performed every job that I've tried, including: Drilling 7/8 inch holes in pressure treated wood, driving 5/16 inch hex head metal and wood screws to assemble a garage door, and driving 3 inch wood screws into a door jam.

The only problem is lack of control for the high torque. It seems to be a rugged drill that will last. If you can put up with the torque control problem, I recommend this drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE TOOL
There are so many cordless drills out there; it is tough to find one worth the money, and worth the hassle of endless comparison-shopping. Search no more. Buy this drill. I've had Skill, Makita, Panasonic, Porta Cable and Craftsman. Nothing comes close to this Dewalt. It's so powerful; it will break your wrist if you're not careful. This drill bores through rock-hard, 100-year-old dimension pine floor joists for almost an hour of run time on one battery, yet the clutch can be sensitive enough to drive screws in drywall without a problem. I dropped it off my barn roof (28') on to concrete - no damage. The case is well built. Everything works exactly as advertised. Great tool I have done without far too long.

1-0 out of 5 stars DeWalt Doesn't Give Any Service
Great looking Drill/Driver!! I bought this unit to install some hardibacker boards for a tile job, and I thought I needed the high ft/lbs of torque. After putting down about twelve sheets of hardibacker and screwing them to the floor, the adjustable clutch went out. FAILED to work. Sent it right back to DeWalt where they looked at it and sent it back unrepaired. I sent it back 2 more times and each time they returned the unit without repairing it. Numerous phone calls to DeWalt to no avail. Finally it got beyond the warranty and they said they would charge me to look at it one more time. I bought a Porter Cable Drill Driver and finished the floor without incident.
It's too bad that DeWalt spends all their money marketing their products and very little on giving good customer service. They could have made this a positive experience, instead they screwed a good customer. I WILL NEVER BUY DEWALT PRODUCTS AGAIN!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Clutch
Today 5/24 I'm returning my 4th drill in a month due to the cheap clutch Dewalt uses in this drill. My old Dewalt lasted 7 years and a complete home remodel before giving up. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrated Porter Cable Fan
I'm a contractor, and I've been a loyal Porter Cable customer for a long time. I own many P/C tools. I purchased this 12v drill as a replacement for a DeWalt 18v drill that I felt was too heavy and cumbersome for all-day use. Now I'm sorry I sold the DeWalt. This 12v has caused many frustrating moments on the job site...poor battery life, faulty keyless chuck (very annoying), and a 2-speed gear switch that sometimes slips into neutral if you're not careful where you grip the drill. I just can't recommend this drill, which is unfortunate for such a Porter Cable fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful with the Batteries
This is a super driver/ flashlight combo with the exception of two problems. The chuck is difficult to tighten on drill bits for the really tough jobs. And the batteries, if one should begin to leak (noticed by blue color on the contacts) had better be disposed of promptly. It will spread like cancer to the charger, then to the other battery and components. My entire system had to be disposed of due to a little blue color that I didn't think was a problem until too late.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Having purchased other Porter Cable products in the past, I had high expectations for this tool. I previously worked with a Makita 9.6 volt unit and wanted to upgrade to a 12 volt product. After six months of fairly light use, my first unit broke at the stem beneath the keyless chuck (above the torque adjustment). A local retail outlet replaced the tool with a new unit, but the battery failed after a few months on the replacement unit. I have concerns about overall manufacturer quality, however, the tool does perform well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I did a lot of research on cordless drills and everything pointed to Porter-Cable as the drill to buy. It has performed flawlessly. It has plenty of power to drill, and it is easy to swap out the bits really fast. I probably would have preferred the 14.4V, but I can honestly say that the 12V does the job. Mine also came with an excellent flashlight, and the dual batteries are a must. The 1 hour charge time is fantastic! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the buck anywhere
I purchased this drill (actually i think an older version of the same one) used in 2001 and have abused it in every way possible since then. In my job installing car stereo's we go through an average of 2-3 batteries per day and have tried every brand out, but the DeWalt drills have taken far more abuse than any of them.

Mine i have even been running 14.4v batteries in for years and the motor has taken it fine, no smell's, funny sounds or anything else. I have dropped it from 10+ ft with no issues on numerous times. Ive even taken to throwing it on the concrete just to show people how it just will not break. Simply amazes me.

People complain about the battery life as compared to some other drills. This makes no sense to me since ive been a long time fan of Makita, have owned Makita, Black and decker firestorm, porter cable and milwaukee drills and none of them have the battery life of the DeWalt. A fellow installer has been kicking himself because his makita 12v light will run for about 15 mins on a fresh battery while mine will run for 2+hours.

Now in my full time job as a maintenance man at a hospital we have swapped over exclusively to DeWalt drills, replacing porter cable, craftsman and bosch drills.

I am sold on these drills and the abuse that they take and now own 3 of them, one made in 1997, one in 2000, and the other in 2001 and all 3 of them are still alive and kicking, running off of the original batteries no less with no batteries having died yet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Drill, Bad Battery Performance
I love the balance, torque (and adjustability), low and high speed settings...but the battery life (both the length they hold a charge and the number of charges they take before end of life) pales in comparison to my old (non XR) DeWalt 12 V cordless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but a few problems
Overall I like this drill but there are 2 problems that would make me consider buying another DeWalt drill. First after about 3 years of very minimal use both batteries have died, and of course the price of one battery is close to half the price of the entire drill purchased new. The second problem is the terrible balance of the drill, It can stand up on its own, but add quick change chuck and it cant even stand on its own. So...........In hindsight I wish I had bought th Makita.

5-0 out of 5 stars light and easy to handle
This is not a clydsedale of drills, it is light and powerful enough for most wood/aluminum drilling. It is not for large bits through very thick wood. I have had mine for 3 years and have had no problems with the drill or batteries. I use it for cabinetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Drill
I am very pleased with the performance, features and quality of this tool. It is light and compact, with plenty of torque. I took it out of the case, charged it up and went right to work. I have used this drill on a daily basis without any problems.

The 1.3ah battery is the same type battery used by Porter Cable in their compact, lighter 12v drills...

I hand build custom clocks, small furniture and case goods. This is a good drill that fits into tight spaces and has plenty of power. I have enjoyed using this drill and am very pleased with it. ... Read more
