Yikes!
I purchased these as a gift for the home improvement junkie that I share a house with and guess who uses them constantly? ME! They are razor sharp and quite an upgrade from the cheap dull ones we had previously. Don't buy cheap tools! They are dangerous and frustrating. We also have the 14 volt Milwaukee cordless drill and I love that too. Very happy with the bits.

Do yourself a favor
These will be the last drill bits you will need to buy. They are super hard and will go through the toughest heat-treated metal. You will need to be carefull with them; even though they are hard, they will break if you were to drop them onto a concrete floor. But will a little care they should last a lifetime. ... Read more

First Drill Press
Well, I haven't gotten the drill via freight yet, but I did get a bit of a surprise...when Grizzly sent me a shipping confirmation, I also got a confirmation that my 6" Drill Press vise had also shipped. What vise I asked, I never ordered a vice. Apparently Grizzly is including a 5" drill press vice, for free(at least as of 15 June 04)! I'm liking this press more and more, and I haven't even seen it yet.
Added: I finally got the press. As previous reviewers said, it's quite beefy. It's a little rough around the edges, though. There's a bit of Grizzly Green paint on some of the milled steel parts, and most of the edges on the casting are a bit sharp. Also, the base is a bit warped, and needed to be shimmed about 1/16 inch to sit flat. Other than that, assembly and operation is easy. After adjusting the chuck in the press, I was able to get the runnout down to about .002" or so...not bad for $199. Another interesting note: it took LESS time for the 172# drill press to get here by freight truck than it takes for a UPS package mailed the same day to get here (ordered on Sunday, drill arrived Wednesday AM, around 1030).

I keep looking at this burly, 170 pound iron monster and I can't figure out how Grizzly can sell this unit for such a low price. Its construction is so tough I am able to hammer down metals on its table with no problems. This machine has everything I need, form an encapsulated induction motor to all around sealed-ball bearing construction. Also, the lowest speed setting is good for machining metals. And not to worry, the motor is also quite powerful. The drill chuck does require installation and some adjustment. After installing the chuck I loaded a drill bit and then placed piece of wood on the side of the chuck and tapped it with a hammer until the drill bit spun in perfect center. I hope this review helps...good luck.

Great drill press - Outstanding price
I got this drill press as a Christmas gift but this weekend was the first chance I had to really put it to use in a big project. I used nearly every kind of drill bit imaginable, including forstners, spade bits, hole saws, brad points, and of course regular twist bits. The drill handled all the bits I used without any trouble, and changing the speeds to compensate for different bits was easy because all you have to do to access the pulleys is flip open the lid on top. I also had to drill a lot of angles, which was a cinch because of the adjustable table. All I had to do was dial the right angle, clamp down the wood, and go to town on it. Another handy feature is the light, which uses a standard size light bulb and does a great job of illuminating the work area. But perhaps the best thing about this drill press is the price. For $199 this is a steal. You can definitely pay a lot more for a drill press and not get any more features or performance than you'll find in this one. Model 11-990 is still availabe.
Just to note... the two-year old Delta 12" model 11-990 which the troublesome DP300 replaced is still available at a discount from some industrial tool suppliers. I purchased one about two months ago. It is the exact same drill press with all of the same specifications, including being made in China.
So far, it has been a very good tool and I have no complaints, especially considering the reduced price. I wrote a review on it last month.
It's possible that since technically it is an older model, it may have been made to higher standards, because as everyone in the woodworking industry now knows, Delta's continued cost cutting shift to its overseas production facilities has produced increasingly inferior products over the last few years. This is especially true for their low priced light home duty "ShopMaster" series and medium priced commercial product line.
Considering the fact that Delta owns these overseas facilities, if they exercised better material selection, manufacturing techniques and quality control, this wouldn't be such an issue. Unfortunately for everyone, overall product quality as well as Delta's reputation are now almost completely in the tank.

bad motor
I purchased the drill press to use with my middle school students. Less than 2 weeks after it arrived, my students called me over cause it smelled funny. I noticed hot melted plastic dripping from the motor and immediately unplugged it and we had to leave the area because of the fumes. Now I get the wonderful task of tracking down the warranty, and then the communciation with delta/amazon, and then the return shipping or lawsuit, and then the... You get the picture! You may want to check other brands...if not, good luck!

Depth stop unworkable
As an old woodworker, disappointed that the depth stop mechanism does not work, even when following the written instructions. The spindle travel is very short out of the box, and ours just (without any adjustment) became shorter. The depth control ring and the guage are not intuitive, the guage reading what appears to be backwards. Not up to the old standads of Rockwell/Delta days. Do not buy this model.

Under powered
This drill press is adequate as a bench top unit. Initially I was fairly happy with it, other than some vibration from the spindle. But the more I use it the more I am dissapointed with it. The minimum spindle speed is 620 which is too fast for my hole cutter ( recommended 400 RPM). Delta should change the pulley ratios to allow an alternative slower speed rather than so many at the higher end. I used my hole cutter anyways and ended up barely being able to cut a 3" diameter hole the drill kept stopping. It appears as if the motor just stops under load. I noticed a similar problem using a small diameter forstner bit. I hope that my motor needs to be replaced, and it isn't just that that's the best that 1/3 hp can do.

Very Disappointing Delta quality
Received my DP300 on Friday afternoon. Out of box the tool rest was broken. After assembly, the depth stop was not settable - the screw stop inside the mechanism was not attached. More importantly, the quill raised and lowered with great force required. It would not return under its own spring return tension. I suspect there is a woodruff key in the slot and it is broken. Of course customer service is closed for the weekend and I cannot get redress from Delta until Monday.

I have several other US made Delta tools with which I am satisfied. There was no damage to the shipping container, so I believe the DP300 left the factory in China in this condition. Delta needs to revisit their Quality control in offshore locations or risk ruining their previously fine name. ... Read more

Bosch Does It Again
I was beginning to wish I had a second cordless drill. Having to change bits frequently is all the more work. With the Bosch Clic system, you just pop the bit in the holder, pull the head back, it clicks and holds your bit. To change, it is intuitive because as you pull the chuck forward it releases the bit as you pull the bit out, all in one motion. Just like putting the bit in, in one sweep. In goes the bit, and the chuck moves back to the click.
Bosch makes several clic change bit styles that work with the system, including self feeding spade bits.
The interesting thing is that the Ryobi bits fit it perfectly as well. I wound up stocking up at the local home center on other bits.
I was building a large outfeed table for the table saw out of red oak. Having to drill countersinks for the screws, and following with a phillips bit to set the screws, all the while clamping and unclamping the joint, made the clic change system the right tool. Saved all kinds of time, not to mention enlongating the battery life of the drill, not having to run it to change the bit fifty times.
The good thing is that the Bosch clic system works without a snag. No hang ups or binding, just smooth consistent changes. Highly recommended.

Best Bit Holder Made
The Bosch Clic-Change bit holder is the result of great design thought. It's small, bits change with a natural hand movement, and the heavy duty shaft doesn't slip. I only wish Bosch made the bit holder available without the hex-shank bits and extras. I'd love to buy several for all my drills and as gifts for friends. Clic-Change makes installing hinges a breeze.

What would I do without them?
I purchased these just in time for an entire kitchen's worth of Ikea Cabinets to arrive. I used these EVERY DAY for a month while assembling the cabinets. They are really good and sharp and the quick change feature was invaluable as I was switching them constantly while drilling holes and then attaching 25 handles. I guess it's silly to say you LOVE a drill bit set so lets just say I'm EXTREMELY fond of them instead.

accessorize
While the quick, one-handed change is nice, it's still a bit long to handle with a drill that has its weight in the back.
Also, I have yet to find any accessories to complement the set-up, such as a countersink. I hope Bosch keeps putting in their R&D time to give us what we need (and want).

Best on the Market
I have used an Insty Bit for the last seven years and I wish Bosch had come out with this much sooner. The one hand operation is great and the assortment of bits has saved me from rumaging through my collection of bits for square drive and phillips screws. The drill bits come in handy as well. A solid machine at a good price
When shopping for my first woodworking drill press for my shop, I wanted something that was solid, powerful, reliable, and something that I wouldn't outgrow. I've grown tired of buying cheap machines and later wishing I had sprung for something better. I've also been disappointed in Delta's quality lately (my second choice), so I decided to try another brand. Having used this drill press on a project of mine for about a week now, I'm convinced this is the machine.

I received my drill press about a week after I ordered it. The box is too heavy to be handled by one person alone, but most people should be able to move it piece by piece once they've received it. Assembly is easy, but you will definitely need help mounting the head onto the column as the head is very heavy. This machine is quite a beast for a benchtop drill press -- be sure your workbench can handle the size and weight of this machine.

At 3/4 hp, this drill has more than enough power to drill through wood. In fact, it's sometimes hard to tell if your bit has punched through the bottom of the wood since the motor never seems to strain when drilling. You'd think a motor like that would create a lot of noise, but it's much lower than I had expected.

The only irritation I've had so far is Grizzly's addition of a depth stop gauge on the left side of the head. Now don't get me wrong, this is a fine addition, but they've removed the scale on the collar lock on the right side without removing any of the hardware. So essentially, you have two methods for a depth stop. The depth stop gauge on the left is easy to bend if you're not paying attention, so I'll be using the collar stop on the right after adding my own scale. (This change has not been incorporated into the manual yet.)

One interesting thing I discovered is that this model and the G7944 (the floor model) are identical, including the manual, except for three column parts. So for about $65, you can order the three column parts from Grizzly and convert this machine to a floor model if you decide that better fits your needs in the future.

Overall, I've found this drill press to be an excellent machine and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Good Machine, Poor Customer Service
This is my first tool purchase from Grizzly, and I am very disappointed with their customer service! In all the pictures and literature, including the manual that came with the dp, it shows a depth guage ring on the feed shaft. However, when I looked at the head unit, there wasn't a depth ring. Instead there was the ruler-type guage attached to the spindle. The problem with this is in order to attach the Mortising Accessory, you have to remove the depth guage...then you don't have a guage for mortising. I called customer service and at first they said sorry, too bad and there was nothing they could do. After complaining for a few minutes the tech consulted with a Supervisor and their solution was to send me the parts to change it to the advertised type...but I HAD TO PAY FOR THE PARTS! Now, it wasn't the price, just the principle. The parts cost a whole $4.00. I explained that after this experience, they would be losing me as a customer and they did't care. A MUST for hobbyists, home remodellers, contractors
Firstly, not manner of the manufacturer's plastic tool cases are worth a crap. Slots don't hold the parts. But this kit, a whole different story. Whether you open the kit inverted or correctly (label up), each tool remains in its appropriate slot. Secondly, everything you could ask for in reference to your cordless is contained within this impressive kit. Whether your gun is Porter Cable, DeWalt, Makita, Hitachi... you will not find a better kit for the price. This product is well worth owning.

Vix-Bits are great
Vix-Bits are one of those things that once you use you wonder why you waited so long to get them. Great on-center holes each time. These genuine Vix-Bits appear to be better made than the Chinese or Taiwanese clones that some companies sell.

Eureka! I CAN Drill Holes that are Centered!
I had been stubbornly using an awl or an eyeball to center my holes until I finally broke down and bought one of these. I had a couple of doors to hang so I figured about 20¢ per hole to get it right. The Vix sure makes it easy to do things right. Those doors actually LOOK like they were hung by a sober man.

These are very good bits!
I bought this set at Lowe's and so far I am very pleased with their quality.I paid about the same price but I also got a free DeWalt baseball cap in the deal!The bits have stayed sharp through many projects and this new design for the case is a vast improvement - the hinge is much stronger and I feel it will hold up well.Because this assortment includes all of the sizes you would use most often, I keep mine right in the case with my DeWalt cordless drill so I am never without them!

A quick and accurate way to predrill hinges
This bit drills just the right hole for it's specific purpose. Only negative is that it tends to clog with wood shavings and stick. It greatly improves the speed and accuracy of predrilling hinges.

How deep can this bit drill?
I bought a bit similar to this, but it could only drill about 3/8 of an inch deep. Is this bit able to drill to 3/4 of an inch of depth? If so - I'll buy it!

I can't remember how many times I have struggled trying to get my pilot hole centered in the middle of a hinge or some other pre-drilled hole. Excellent quality and durability
I was amazed at the rate these drill bits chew through metal... I drilled through a 1/4" of a piece of tempered steel in half a minute and through 16ga copper sheet in barely a second. The cobalt bits in the copper were incredible, I did not even have to apply much pressure to get the bit to bite.

Great bits in a sturdy case
What a great purchase! The bits are sharp and sturdy, and they cut through wood like it's butter. They come to a point at a wide angle, so they're less likely to slide away from your drilling point as you start drilling.

I've only owned them for a few weeks, so I can't attest to how long they'll stay this sharp. Also, I've yet to try drilling through metal.

The set comes with two bits for some of the popular sizes, which is great since I tend to lose or break my 1/8" bit all the time.

The case itself is quite sturdy, but a little oversized. The bits are held firmly in place, so you never open your case after a bumpy car ride to have all 13 bits fall to your feet. If you own a DeWalt drill, it fits snugly in the drill case.
