Knee deep in weeds
After owning 2-3 prior 2-cycle trimmers, this 4-cycle engine was a pleasure to use. It was an easy start up without the usual blood, sweat, and tears of the 2-cycles (due to finicky gas/oil mixtures). The speedspool released more line consistently and smoothly unlike other models I've dealt with.....including other Ryobi 2-cycle models.
Though a couple of folks mentioned that it was a quieter run, it could be much quieter. Don't be lured into a false sense of security about saving your hearing here. You'll still need ear protection since the motor still roars away loadly enough for these ears....which rang away for about an hour after trying it without protection. I think this model has good potential. I gave it four stars for that reason. The fact that you can accessorize is a plus. Have not had the opportunity to try other features out to determine ease of alterations. Another reason for the 4 stars......the shoulder strap should have been provided with the trimmer. Any responsible merchant should understand implications of the safety that good ergonomics brings; and, though the style and the weight isn't bad, fatigue will set in with use without the support a strap offers. Fortunately, the strap I have for my other model snapped into this trimmer's pre-molded loop.
It will be interesting to see how this baby holds up with time....to see if it will earn a "5 star" status.

Great Tool
I ordered the 825 trimmer and the blower/vacuum attachment from Amazon.com two months ago. Amazon delivered everything about five days after I placed the order, beating their estimated delivery date by over a week. I have used the trimmer several times, once for three hours straight, and am absolutely satisfied. The 4-cylce engine has more than enough power for my uses and the bump-line-feed is really convenient. The "quick-link" system of changing accessories works very easily. I would recommend purchasing the shoulder strap if you plan on using it for more than 30 minutes at a time as it begins to get cumbersome. It is a little heavier than standard two-stroke trimmers, but the decreased vibration and noise more than make up for that. The blower/vacuum attachment attaches in less than twenty seconds and works very well for blowing grass clippings off the pavement. I have not tried blowing leaves with it, but it seems about as powerful as a regular blower and don't anticipate any problems. Overall, I would recommend this trimmer to anyone who needs/wants a little more power in their trimmer. The dozen or so attachments offered by Ryobi are widely available and from what I have seen, work well.

Poor quality, hard to start, broke in 1 season
I was tired of mixing oil w/ gas on 2 cycle weed wackers and thought this would be great. I'm on my 2nd season and through most of the 1st found the Ryobi to be hard to start. I also had consistent problems with the reel pulling in the line as it accelerated. I brought it back. The 2nd one didn't have the problem. I can't use the Ryobi now because the other feature I that I thought was great... the split collar allowing accessories... the female coupling portion of the drive shaft has stripped! I'm giving up and buying a new weed wacker and it won't be a Ryobi.

My neighbor had bought this unit and immediately I fell in love with it. Not only do you have the advantage of easy and reliable starting, thanks to the 4/cycle engine, but this is one of the most handiest tools ever made for gardening. As a start, having the trimmer and also the blower attachment you'll find that you'll save a tremendous amount of time taking care of your lawn/yard. Also with the various attachments, you could have everything you really need for taking care of your yard in one unit. Very powerful, very versatile and a really good price. I only wish my wife would let me buy the hedge trimmer unit next, but I will have to wait : ) Truly a wonderful machine, I can almost guarantee you'll love it, and you will be the envy of your neighborhood.....I know we are! :)

Pretty decent so far; lacks a shoulder strap
I've had this trimmer for a couple of weeks now, and it's my first trimmer, although I've used an electric one in the past.
I like the simplicity of the 4-cycle engine, since there is no mucking with oil/gas mixes. Use the primer, pull once or twice, the engine starts and you're good to go. The trimmer has been very efficient on cutting tall grass and weeds (this is not for a lawn, it's for a wild growth area on my lot). I haven't tried detailed work such as edge trimming on a lawn. So far, the only drawback is the weight. After 15mn of operation, between the weight of the trimmer, the vibrations, and pulling the trigger, my right hand goes numb and I have to stop. I wish the trimmer had some kind of shoulder support. But then 15mn gets a lot done, cutting a path through this jungle in progress. I imagine that if you have stronger arms and hands than me (shouldn't be too hard), you won't have this problem.

EZ Link failed in middle of first use!!!
I bought this 4-cycle trimmer and the troy-built edger together. I first hooked up the trimmer and did about 5 minutes of minor maintenance in the front yard, then broke out the edger. I've got a samll 70' lot in Florida with a single sidewalk out front and a short driveway up to the house, that was slightly overgrown with st. augustine's grass. I got 3/4 of the way through edging and suddenly lost power to the edger. I tried the trimmer and it barely had enough torque to rotate the trimmer head--and a couple blades of grass were enough to stop it in its tracks. Disconnecting the ez-link, i discovered that the drive mechanism inside was now coated with shaved metal everywhere--the ez-link connection had been totally stripped and both tools are now a worthless hunk of junk.

I previously owned a troy-built trimmer that only lasted 5 trims before the ez-start pulley disintegrated.

More than enough.....
I purchased this trimmer to replace my electric trimmer that was falling apart.The directions are straight-forward, and assembly was simple.Starting the trimmer for the first time took several tries, but eventually fired right up.
Moving from an electric trimmer to a gas trimmer is quite a change.The Troy-Bilt has dual-trimmer ends, and rotates much faster.It weighs quite a bit more than the electric, naturally, which is really the only downfall, outside of the edge guide.The edge guide is a bit awkward, since it is a rotating wheel.It is a bit bulky and makes it hard to judge the true length of the strings.
Overall, especially for the price, you can't beat this trimmer.I would recommend it to anyone with a moderate sized yard. ... Read more

Truly pathetic...
I am not given to writing negative reviews and I cannot ever recall giving anything one star before, but this machine is a joke.

I have probably used 6 different types of 'weed whacker' over the years and this is by far the worst starting machine of any kind (even given that 2 stroke engines are the work of the Devil) I have ever attempted to use.

Apart from being a nightmare to start, the wretched thing cuts out prematurely after a max of 10 minutes, either due to overheating or a lousy fuel system.

Maybe I was just unlucky with this particular machine, but this monstrosity should never have slipped past quality control. That is, if they even have any.

Good choice for average homeowner
I have used this trimmer for two full seasons for typical yard work.It has plenty of power for my purpose, but I'm not convinced it has "plenty of brawn to power through the most ragged, overgrown grass," as the description states.I cannot comment on the brush cutter as I have not used it.

The trimmer is relatively light and easy to handle.The strap provided with the trimmer is of little value.It is thin and awkward to use.Although I did use it for a short time, the clip which attaches to the trimmer bent and so I just disposed of it.The trimmer is light enough that a strap isn't necessary for routine yard work.

The "EZ-Start" system works very well:it starts very easily, usually with just a pull or two of the cord.The trimmer is loud, but that is expected and is not a personal concern.

Although the string became bound on the reel provided with the purchase, I had the problem only once and the bumphead otherwise works reasonably well.

I considered three stars for this review given problems with the pull cord.The description states that only a "slow, smooth, easy pull" is necessary to start the trimmer.Perhaps the problem with my trimmer's cord is an anomaly, but it is anything but smooth.The cord often sticks during the pull.Pulling through it is usually not a problem, although the cord recently became bound and had to be serviced.I decided on four stars since, despite the awkward pull of the cord, it still starts on the first or second pull.

The trimmer is now in its third season and, other than the cord issue, it is mechanically sound and still starts easily.Overall, I am pleased with the purchase and recommend it for anyone needing a trimmer for routine yard work. ... Read more

Useful but slow cutting
I have several live oaks in my yard that need a lot of pruning. I can cut branches about 12 feet high from a step ladder using a chain saw or lopping shears. With this tool I can get at limbs up to 20 feet high.

But I was a little disappointed in the cutting performance. I did not expect it to work as well as a chain saw, but I expected it to work better than it does with the aggressive teeth on the blade. It is difficult to get good leverage on the blade while holding the trimmer with both hands so close to the back end of the trimmer. It does good on limbs up to 1" in diameter, but it takes several minutes to cut through a limb that is 3" in diameter, and that is an eternity while holding the trimmer at an awkward angle over your head.

Great Add on
This tree/bush pruner is really great. I have a half acre with a wide variety of trees. Apple and Pear trees are a snap with this baby. Over grown rose of sharon is no problem. Oak does take a little longer to get through but hey, I'm not standing on a ladder sawing the old fasioned way and breaking a blade. I fully recommend this item. I have the blower/vac, hedge trimmer and snow thrower attachments for my Ryobi and this pruner really takes the place of a small chain saw. It comes with 2 blades and the strap. Get it if you have bushes and trees and ryobi/john deere/craftsman.

not quite "there"
Mine wouldn't work, the pruner shaft tube was a bit too long to work when attached to the extension; I disassembled it and cut it down 1/2" shorter and it worked good after that.

Great tool when it works
I used this for a couple of days trimming shrubs and pine trees. It worked great! It's like a sawzall on a stick. I was cutting up to about three inches in diameter limbs. Then one day I was taking out some massive bushes and on the 5th one it stopped working. You could move the blade back and forth with your hand. I went to www.trimmerplus.com to look up the nearest repair center (as instructed in the manual). Everyone on their list said they wouldn't fix it and they don't know why they are in the DB. Then I tried the 800 number service locator. Again... everyone close was either outta business or wouldn't fix it. Finally a customer service rep tracked down a place about 25 miles from me (an autobody shop???). I'm going there today to drop it off. I'll update the post with any relevant info. HTH.
