5-0 out of 5 stars Great, economical and woman-friendly
When this was delivered all I needed to provide was gasoline. It shipped with the right amount of oil, which took less than 30 seconds to pour in, and another 3 minutes to lock down the handle, fill it with gas and start it.

It started on the first pull and worked flawlessly in our 1/3 acre yard. The first time this mower used three tankfuls of gas, but this was because the grass and weeds in our lawn had grown nearly 18 inches high (we'd recently moved in). The second time I mowed the lawn I only used a tank of gas, which indicates how economical this model is to own and operate.

The self-propelling feature was good enough to allow me to handle the mower, even on hilly parts of the back yard.

The instruction book is easy to follow, the mower itself is well-packed and easy to remove from the shipping carton, and set-up was a breeze. Performance is outstanding. If I had it to do all over again, I'd still purchase this model, which is the best compliment I can bestow. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

A six-power Briggs and Stratton Quantum motor powers this trimmer mower as it effectively and evenly trims tall weeds, sharp corners, and wet grass. The trimmer mower also excels on flat plots, hills, and other rough terrain alike.

The trimmer mower provides three cutting length options from 1-1/2 to 5 inches. An extended trimmer head permits the mower to reach grass under low-hanging bushes while simultaneously protecting users from flying debris. The trimmer also comes equipped with a head clutch to enable a safe, quick, and easy engine shutdown. The 14-inch ball-bearing rear wheels resist rust with a sturdy composite nylon construction as they help push the trimmer with a minimum of friction. The trimmer mower comes assembled with a complimentary oil supply. Troy-Bilt offers a limited lifetime warranty and a product registration program. Amazon.com Review

The Lawn-Boy 10686 eases everyone’s least favorite weekend task in a number of ways. No more yanking on a stubborn cord--an easy electric starter means the powerful Tecumseh LV 195 engine thrums to life with the turn of a key. A Sens-a-Speed self-propel system guides the mower without depending on the sweat of your brow, and even adjusts automatically to match the operator’s natural walking speed (up to four miles an hour). Finally, a three-in-one system lets you choose between rear-bagging grass clippings, discharging them through a side chute, or mulching, to give your lawn a shot of 100% natural fertilizer. Switching from one function to another is quick, easy, and involves no tools whatsoever.

The 10686 also comes loaded with thoughtful comfort features like easy-adjusting handle height, soft ergonomic grips, and a one-handed, easy-lift bag. Step once on the quick-stow lever to have the handle fold at a ninety-degree angle; step twice for flat, 180-degree storage, allowing even the bag to stow away neatly. The 21-inch steel cutting deck is durable, lightweight, and simple to maneuver. Combined with the unit’s easy-turn wheels, it means the 110686 is exceptionally uncomplicated for even smaller persons to handle in turns and tight corners. This mower is covered by a full two-year warranty. --Mary Park ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not as advertised
I ordered this mower for the Briggs and Stratton 6.5HP (B&S) Quantum Engine and the self pacing self propelled mechanism. After waiting 3 weeks I got a 6.75 Techumseh engine and the self propelling mechanism is an odd mixture of push forward, pull back that is anything but self pacing for me. Would have been nice to state correct engine on mower and to have a better explanation about how "self pacing" mechanism works?. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

With a robust 6-1/2 horsepower engine, this sturdy little gas mower is ideal for mowing big or overgrown lawns. A single-speed front wheel drive system propels the unit forward on its own without compromising maneuverability in tight corners or turns. An innovative Triple Care feature allows users to deal with clippings in one of three ways: collect them in a rear-mounted bag with 2-1/3-bushel capacity; discharge them through a side chute; or apply as a natural lawn fertilizer via the included mulch kit. A deep-dome, 22-inch cutting deck and patented mulching blade elevate and chop clippings so they decompose more rapidly--the waste is so finely cut that it disappears into the lawn for a clean, neat look. Hefty eight-inch wheels roll and maneuver easily for less effort on your part. The nine-position fingertip height adjuster fine-tunes cutting elevation from one to 3-1/2 inches for a variety of lawn conditions. Two handles fold down for convenient transportation or compact storage. The Yard-Man 11A-435D701 comes fully assembled with oil in the carton, and is covered by a two-year limited warranty. --Mary Park ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Read All Reviews For This Style of Deck
Before purchasing this style of lawnmower which is made by Lawnboy/Toro, I would suggest looking at all products that have the off set wheel deck... or staggered deck and read all reviews.

If you take the time to do this, you will see that this is a very poor design!

Please keep in mind that it does not matter if the machine is self propelled or push type. It also does not matter if it is a two stroke or a four stroke engine.

The problem I have experienced is the poor quality and very poorly designed deck.

Before buying this type of lawnmower, ask your self, "If it is so great... why do they offer a two year warranty?" My advice would be if a tool or machine has a two year warranty, do not buy it!

Also, please keep in mind that the Toro Company is based in Bloomington, MN! I would be very skeptical of any positive review from that part of the country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mower-great value
The best purchase I have ever made value-wise. This mower delivers the best cut I have ever gotten from a walk-mower and I have owned the best brands available.

Keep in mind, the product description is not accurate-the mower deck is steel, not aluminum.

1-0 out of 5 stars I miss my old Murray
My trusty 5 hp 9-year old Murray mower "disappeared" from my backyard. Thus began the search for a new mower.

Consulting Consumer Reports Magazine I found this mower to be rated a best buy. I don't know why... The mower looks great. That's the good news.

The mower arrive in good time (Amazon has been great in this regard), but it arrived damaged. Not uncommon I would guess, since there was no packing in the box!!! Rattling around in UPS trucks and apparently dropped from great height, the rear wheel adjuster lever was bent and twisted and jammed into the wheel. Luckily I'm handy and 45 minutes and one bandaid later I was adding oil and gas and heading for the lawn.

Thank you Consumer Reports, but here's my review: The cut left a noticeable number of blades standing proud above the others, thus requiring two passes to properly shear the lawn.

This mower likes to be heard. Its Briggs and stratton engine would easily drown out the din of a nearby locomotive. Buy this mower, buy good ear protection.

This mower will really shake you up. Something's not quite balanced. I checked the blade, although it came dull it was balanced just fine. If you're mowing for more than 15 minutes expect numb hands.

Wow ball bearing wheels... give them a good spin and watch them come to stop after about 5 seconds. One wheel wobbles noticeably. Compared to my old Murray with sleeve bearing this clunker is a pain to push.

A mulching mower should convert blades of grass to confetti which magically disappear in the turf. This mower leaves a trail of unmulched blades on top of the turf.

And what power...? its six point five horsepower engine bogs down in the more lush areas of my lawn. My old 5 HP would mow down these areas without losing an RPM.

Finally, go to the Yard-Man website and try to find a path to submit a question, good luck, it's next to impossible. Buried deep within their site you can find a phone number (not toll free), but no email address in which to ask questions (ie. complain) about this fine product.

Consider this mower only if looks are important -- it's darn good looking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but a headache
If you want to get a lawn mower, I suggest that you go to the store and pick one up. The quality of the hardware/tool you order from Amazon is a gamble. I got this mower on here and it came defective. I've put my request in for replacement item a month ago and to this date have not seen it yet. My lawn is as tall as the trees around my property because I am still waiting for the part to make my mower work. I will never buy any hardware from Amazon again since most of the items I've recieved from them is in questionable condition.

Save yourself some time and headache and pick up your tools and hardware up at the local store. At least there you'll know that the item you pick up is brand new, not refurbished or defective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mower
Wow; 3 words--won-der-ful. Cuts through even wet grass like butter. My old mower with the Briggs and Stratton engine lasted 13 years; I feel confident that this one will last equally as long or even longer. I would highly recommend this mower. Five stars to Amazon, too--for their usual FAST shipping!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Shipment and initial use
I received the lawnmower in perfect condition ready to have the gas and oil put in, raise the handle and start mowing. I have only used it once but was amazed at how easy it was to turn corners with it and the speed with which it moved. Good walking pace for me. I was mowing high grass with the mulch mode in use and it did overheat. I will use the bag for the rest of the high grass and hope that fixes the overheating problem. I am very pleased with this lawnmower

2-0 out of 5 stars Shipping Poor
The box was total open when the mower arrived. It looked as if the lawn mower fell out and was put back into the box. Oil came out and clogged the air filter so the mower was not able to start. I replaced the air filter and the mower now works 100% but I would be wary buy items like this online again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Shipment
The shipment of this lawnmower was awful. I uncrated the box to find the cap to the quart of oil that came with the lawmower cracked, and oil strewn everywhere along the inside of the box and mower. But the worst of it came when I noticed the right rear wheel askew and immovable. After taking off the wheel, I noticed that the wheel axel was bent on a 45 degree angle. I was ready to send his mower back to Amazon.com, but noted the return policy that stated that anything containing oil or flammables cannot be returned. I was able to repair the axel myself to the point where the wheel can now turn. I've learned my lesson never to buy something like this online again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fast delivery, but sprays oil
It arrived quickly, but the oil cap was broken. I tried running it in this state but it sprays oil everywhere and smokes alarmingly. I don't have a car that it fits in, so now I'm having to pay the local service agent to pick it up. ... Read more

I read about this lawn mower in Consumer Reports, I ordered it from Amazon (which seemed odd to me, but realized they'd deliver it to my door).I put it together (requires very little set-up), and it worked. For a mower that isn't self-propelled, it's light weight and easy to handle. It may be called a Yard-Man, but it's also good for a Yard-Woman.The only problem is that is works best for a right-handed person. It's impossible to pull the starter with your left hand. This 21-inch, 6-1/2-horsepower gas-powered mower combines a strong deep-dome steel cutting deck with sturdy plastic attachments for the best in durability and function without adding unnecessary extra weight. This is a mower that can make your life easier in many ways, and it starts as soon as you open the box: all you need to do to be up and running in under five minutes is tighten the handle wing nuts. The height adjustments are easy, too--unlike some models that require you to remove and reattach the wheels for every adjustment, this mower has levers by each wheel with nine independent settings--and the machine rolls smoothly and maneuvers well. A flip of the side flap converts the mower from mulch to side discharge, or you can hook up the bag (included with this model). Tree guards prevent you from injuring tree trunks and shrubbery. Best of all, it's self-powered, with the drive clutch lever right on the handle. This mower mulcher is one of the most powerful and versatile. Engine oil is included. Limited two-year warranty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent mower!
It's perfect for uneven terrains because of the big wheels at the back. The Briggs & Stratton engine is excellent. Been using it for the last 4 years and never once did I have any probs. Back then it was the best lawn mower to buy according to the consumer digest reports.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great mower
This is my third season with this mower.Virtually problem free; it's performed nearly flawlessly. The self-propelled mower (make sure it's the self-propelled mower like the description of the product says; the title says push mower) practically mows the lawn by itself. The cut is quick and even.

The only glitch is that if you stop it to go from one part of your property to another (should you need to wheel the mower over concrete or asphalt), it is tough to restart. It will restart, but you have to wait a few minutes and then pull the cords several times for it to start up.It's a little annoying, but overall I'm very glad I bought this mower.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad mower if you are not too rough with it...
Good mower for the money.Powerful engine, nice big rear wheels and easy bag use.The only downfall I see to this mower is the fact that the wheels and the way they are attached are not the most durable. It has been fine for me, but when I allowed someone else to use it (someone who was a bit careless with it) it didn't hold up as well.I had to replace some of the wheel connecting parts. For my use it is fine, if I wanted something that was very very durable I would have bought a Toro for quite a bit more. All the features of the expensive mowers. It's worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid This Brand and Especially This Model
This mower was a disaster from the start. I'd heard bad things about Yard-Man, but I thought I'd give this one a try. It was shipped with the front wheel so out of wack, that the mower wouldn't roll. Then it stopped working in the middle of it's FIRST use. After taking it to a service center, it still isn't working right! All I can say is that there are much better choices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yard Man a good value
My Yard Man 559K401 is very powerful and gives a nice even cut.The powerful engine and large rear wheels allow it to cut hills without any problems. It's a good value if you don't want to spend a lot. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

Family-owned company Swisher continues almost sixty years of providing efficient, expedient and ergonomically-correct lawn and garden equipment for American homes and businesses. In this tradition, Swisher created the Trim Max, a trimmer mower designed to reduce back stress associated with hand-held mowers, with three to four times the power for effectively trimming overgrown edges and mowing high weeds and lawns. Equipped with a 6 horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine, the Trim Max maneuvers rugged landscapes and manicured lawns with ease.

While many other standing trimmer mowers feature sharp steel blades, the Trim Max uses a 0.155-inch diameter cutting line for greater safety. Users can adjust the line’s tension belt for greater performance and extended belt life. The trimmer mower cuts a wide 22-inch breadth and automatically turns off when idle, saving fuel and energy and adding further safety. Powder paint covers all metal parts for greater durability. The trimmer head is located on the left side of the mower while 14-inch wheels allow the trimmer mower to turn corners deftly while providing clearance in rougher terrain. To prevent debris from clustering around the machine, Swisher built a debris guard onto the rear of the trimmer mower. The Trim Max also benefits from easy care as all bearings are sealed, eradicating the need for lubrication. The simple task of replacing the cutting line requires no tools, and the trimmer mower runs on regular unleaded gasoline. The trimmer mower comes with one container of engine oil, a replacement trimmer line, and protective goggles. Swisher offers a limited one-year warranty in the event of defective parts or construction. The engine is covered by a separate Briggs & Stratton warranty. The Trim Max measures 35 by 22 by 21 inches and weighs 85 pounds assembled. --Jessica Reuling ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING - READ CUSTOMER REVIEWS BEFORE BUYING
I can't exactly review using the product because upon receiving it I wanted to RETURN it. I was sent a product that had been shipped AT LEAST once before and returned. The carton the product was shipped in was SO SEVERELY DAMAGED, parts were falling out of it, plastic parts were broken and items in the box very likely were lost in shipment. There were previous shipping labels on the carton. A company that does business this way is a company to NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH!!! I am recommending to Amazon it is a detrement to have SWISHER as a supplier!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked Great!
Have used it over an hour now and seems to work great. Really like the tiltable head. Allows you to shave right down to the ground. I have tried a DR trimmer and I like this better because of the tiltable head. Only problem I had with it was the bottle of oil that was shipped with it leaked all over everything. Was quite a mess.

1-0 out of 5 stars Self destructs in 15 minutes
I am stuck with a trimmer that had parts crack, leaked oil, threw off its drive belt, and trimmer strings in less then 15 minutes of proper use. The wheels are flimsy, the cutting height is not adjustable, the handle is uncomfortable and not padded. ... Read more

for 169.00 at "wally world" this mower runs quiet and is easy to push because of the large rear wheels.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to use and fun
I actually use an older model of this Yard man.The big wheels make it a breeze to cut my grandparent's one-and-a half acre yard(with lots of stumps)I don't mind it at all.My old one starts with just one pull(usually) and has never died on me(exccept when out of gas)

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice mower but needs Bag
I bought this mower for my Fiance whose dogs have turned her back yard into an obsticle cource of holes and massive chew toys.
She is able to easaly start and run this mower over her uneven back yard. It did not come with a grass catching bag. The box states that this is an option, so I thought I would order it later.Hours of web searching have not yet located a bag and this is rather upsetting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Mower
If you are looking for something with a powerful engine that is not to heavy, this is it.I have alot of hills in my yard and this wasn't nearly as difficult as i thought it would be to push up them.Easy to start pull string was nice, and large wheels make it easy to go over bumps.I'm glad i bought it and would reccommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied Lawn Boy/Amazon Customer
I own the Lawn-Boy model# 10363. The difference being my mower is self propelled. The mower was shipped UPS to my door step in perfect condition. I unfolded the handle, and added the included oil, and I was ready to cut some grass.

Someone mentioned in their review they bought this mower because it's a 2 stroke motor? It's powered by a 4 stroke Tecumseh engine. I have owned the mower 2 years. I never changed the oil, serviced the spark plug, or even cleaned /replaced the air filter, and it starts on the first pull, and runs like clockwork. The only servicing I have performed is sharpening of the blade. During season I mow my dense Floratam lawn on every third day, and once a week in the winter. My mower doesnt get a break. It is in service 12 months a year. I have had zero issues with my Lawn-Boy mower.

1-0 out of 5 stars more troubles...
Not long after my previous rant, I had the displeasure of having one of the wheels on my mower all but disintegrate, literally. The plastic center of the wheel broke entirely away from the bolt. This wasn't brought on by a loose bolt, excessive force, or any other bizarre act of god. Rather, it was through normal wear and tear (keep in mind I only used the mower 6 times before this happened). Upon calling Lawn Boy/Toro, I was basically told in so many words that they wouldn't send me a replacement wheel, and that it was my loss. Needless to say, I went to Wal Mart and purchased a steel wheel for $5.97, which was consequently of a better quality than the wheel that actually came with the mower in the first place! Also, while on the topic of wheels, for those of you who know a thing about mower wheels, the small hole in the middle of the tread of a mower wheel is for adding lubrication to the moving parts via means of a small oil can. Well, after taking the wheel off the mower, I quickly noticed that the standard rim on a lawn boy wheel is a 1/4" inch solid piece of plastic that is entirely separate from the actual tread. Thus, it is IMPOSSIBLE to actually put oil on the moving parts. Rather, the oil just lays inside the tread. This mower is junk, the customer service is poor, and I'll never purchase another Lawn Boy in my life, period, or any other product of the Toro family. Finally, to add to the other individuals who wrote responses, this mower is HEAVY. Between the 14 gauge deck, and the 6.5 hp engine, it's is virtually impossible to use on a steep bank without cutting off a foot. Oh, and one other thing. This mower really doesn't leave your lawn looking spectacular. It really only gives you an average cut. In fact, the only product I despise more than a Lawn Boy is a Craftsman. However, my neighbor gets a much better cut from his Craftsman than I do from my Lawn Boy. barlett@usachoice.net

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!
First of all, this is a very poor machine.

I have a lot of steep hills on my property and was forced to purchase this item for the two-cycle engine.

Toro/Lawn-Boy brags about the 14 gauge deck: all this means is it is a cheap deck that will not hold up over time. Please note that they use a plastic housing underneath the deck... This is a cheap, poorly designed product!

Lawn-Boy/Toro brags about the staggard/off-set wheel design: all this means is that you will not be able to cut close to any thing, that it will dig into your lawn and the spinning blade will be damaged. (Keep in mind that they use a plastic housing in this area and they do not offer parts for this, I had to purchase a used deck when the blade destroyed the plastic housing.)

Toro/Lawn-Boy brags about repeat customer loyalty: I will not be a repeat buyer.

This machine does not mow, mulch, or do much of anything else for that matter. After replacing the cheap blades made by Toro/Lawn-Boy three times in one season, I had a custom blade made for it.

I also contacted Toro/Lawn-Boy to find out if they made a standard deck that would fit the engine. It took two calls, three letters to Toro, and a complaint letter to the BBB, before they would answer my question... based on this, customer service is very poor. All I needed was a yes or no, after all that I found out that No they do not make a standard deck which would work with the engine... Again Customer Service/Support is very poor.

Do not buy this machine! Do not buy this machine! Do not buy this machine!

2-0 out of 5 stars I'd go a different route if I had to do it over
I wanted a simple lawn boy mower, with none of the bells and whistles (i.e. self propelled, electric start, etc.) that inevitably end up breaking. As well, Lawn Boy has always been known for its quality....which this product lacks. First, I was completely amazed that this model has NO throttle control cable at all. Who designs a mower with no throttle control???!!!! (some whiz kid who never actually mowed a lawn). Second, although the staggered wheel design works in theory, it creates many problems when applied in the real world (i.e. the mower constantly get's hung up in minor depressessions, because there is no wheel in the front right corner, which causes the mower to bottom out). "Easy to start"....what a joke. The injector system on these things doesn't even come close to injecting fuel into the carburator. Rather, its just a worthless button (I still have to pull the cord 3 times before it will start). Finally, I purchased the bagging system that is just as much a pain as the rest of the mower. The diagram for installing the thing is confusing and worthless. The real problem occurs when the bag fills up. once full, the chute that feeds the grass from the deck to the bag clogs, forcing the user to shove their arm down the chute to remove the grass. Oh, and back to the throttle control. Sure, the mower mulches wonderfully when the grass is only 3.5 inches high and completely dry. Otherwise, the mower constantly gets bogged down, yearning for more power, which one can't provide. When you finally do buy the mower, the bagger, and a throttle control cable, you would have been better off purchasing an entirely differnt mower (I would recommend the Cub Cadet with the caster wheels). This is not the same Lawn Boy mower from 20 years ago. The quality and design are both poor, and consequently would not recommend that anyone purchase this product, or any other Lawn Boy product for that matter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be shy about refusing delivery
I got my lawnboy delivered within a week and it was a matter of flipping the handles up and filling with gas and oil. I saved over a hundred dollars buying it online. I have had 3 previous lawnboys. The old one is still my backup mower. What people need to remember about ordering online is don't be afraid to refuse delivery if the box even looks damaged. UPS will leave ANYTHING on your doorstep. Don't be shy about telling UPS that you are refusing delivery and make them come back to your house to pick it up. None of this drive over to one of their centers.
Complain loud enough or threaten to send an email. They will pick it up. Tell the supplier to ship another. Problem solved.

5-0 out of 5 stars everything you need, nothing you don't
I read the other reviews. This mower doesn't have a 2 cycle engine or a bag. Those reviews are about different models. Also, shipping damage doesn't mean the mower is bad.

I've had the mower for a short time and have been very happy with it. It starts on one pull, has good power, and the drive system works smoothly. Lawn Boy calls it a variable speed but really it is a one speed with a clutch that can slip. Holding the drive bar all the way up engages the drive; letting up a little allows the clutch to slip for a slower speed. It works well. If you don't bag clippings, mulching is the way to go...no bag or chute to mess with and no clippings to dispose of. The mower can also side discharge by switching the insert on the mower deck. That's why I said everything you need (good mowing with a useable drive system)and nothing you don't (bagging and complicated drive system). Combine that with a good price and the 10356 starts to look like a winner. I can't speak to its longevity yet but my other Tecumseh engine (Murray lawn tractor) has been going 15 years.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lawn Boy, not what it used to be....
Bought a Silver Pro 2003. Engine began surging 4 months after. Fixed by disasembling and cleaning carb.

Talked to many shops... all admitted the lawn boys run lean and surge as a result. Any amount of dirt in gas will lean out mixture even more. Result is disassembly and clean as necessary. Very bad in long run for 2 stroke engine - it gets its lube from the pre-mixed gas - lean mixture will result in poor lube and premature engine failure.

    My options:
    1. re-jet the carb by drilling oversize orifices (about 1% to 2%) using "numbered drills" and reset the speed governor (tighten spring by "one notch" (will be talking to shops about this), or
    2. sell the mower and get a good 4 stroke like Honda, Husqvarna, or Toro.

BTW, called lawn boy, like talking to robots. More info from shops and people in the trade, despite flashy lawn boy website. Suggestion for lawn boy: design a carb that has built-in clearing needles (that be pushed through FROM the outside of the carb, to clear the jets instead of disassembly. Could not get that message across the "person" I spoke with.

Finally, damp grass plugs up the exhaust chute real easy.

I can NOT recommed lawn boy 2 strokers (or else you will be doing what I'm doing). And the 4 strokers that are out there beat the lawn boy. Lawn boy is not what it used to be...

Good Luck with your choices, hope this helps. Hope lawn boy listens...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great lawnmower!
I've read the other reviews, I was surprised to see so many problems.

I purchased this lawnmower from Amazon.com last August (2003)

It was delivered to my door via UPS. I opened the box and inspected it last August, but did not use it until today. 6/7/04. (I had it stored in my garage.)

I pulled it out of the box, put the oil and gasoline in, it started on the first try. It runs fine. I had no problems whatsoever.

I figured I'd share the positive review about this product.

I don't know if I just got lucky, or if the other reviewers were just unlucky.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Mower but never factory checked- failed out of box
Mower arrived in average condition (at least compared to other reviews). I was all prepared to put it together, but wouldn't you know it, it was fully assembled. Just raise the handle, set wheel height and add oil and gas(the oil and gas are separate now). Now for the fun part, the mower wouldn't start because the mower blade was hitting on a black piece of plastic under the deck. I don't know the purpose of this piece but it is riveted in and per the manual is part of the mower. I filed enough off to allow the blade to make it by. No more problems. I would recommend buying one from the store, as your on your own if you buy on line. ... Read more

    2-0 out of 5 stars Get the 2-Cycle Lawn-Boy
This mower is made well, in typical Lawn-Boy fashion. However, due to its heavy 4-Cycle Engine, the machine's weight is higher than traditional Lawn-Boy 2-Cycle Models. This, combined with the 4-Cycle's cumbersome cutting deck, makes maneuvering and navigating difficult.

Get the comparable 2-Cycle Lawn-Boy, Model 10424, and you will be delighted with the overall performance.NO FILTHY OIL CHANGES, EITHER!

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect side-discharge mower!
I use this machine exclusively in its side-discharge mode (it also mulches and bags). It side-discharges clippings absolutely perfectly! The deck doesn't clog even when the grass is tall and wet, and the cut is clean.Even though it self-propels, its relatively light weight makes it even easier to maneuver. The Tecumseh OHV engine is a bit picky when it comes to starting, but it's powerful, quiet, smooth, light, and, best of all, clean.

This is a great machine. And the price is right.

4-0 out of 5 stars High marks for 4-stroke Lawn-Boy
I bought the Lawn-Boy Gold-Pro 10528 partly because my previous mower, which had lasted more than 30 years, was also a Lawn-Boy. But the 10528 also has some features the old one didn't, like a 4-stroke engine instead of a smelly two-stroke, a three-speed drive, and safety features that just weren't available in 1970. The deck is still bright green cast alloy (aluminum instead of magnesium), the wheels are still famously staggered, and (amazingly) my old bag attachment still fits, but that's about the extent of the similarities.

So far, it's performed well, both bagging and mulching. The self-propelled feature is great, a real treat after years of pushing. I use only the lower two speeds; third gear is almost too fast for me to keep up with, and faster than I'd ever mow anything. I have lots of trees, shrubs, and other obstacles on my lawn, so handling was a top priority. I had previously tested a mower with Toro's variable-speed "Personal Pace" system (what's called "Easy-Stride" on Lawn-Boy models), and found it touchy - far too easy to pop wheelies with. I wanted more control, particularly while turning and jockeying, and the 10528's more traditional drive system provides it. The only problem I've found is that the drive wheels sometimes lock up when pulling the mower in reverse.

The engine is an OHV Tecumseh, a more advanced version than what's offered on Lawn-Boy's current Silver-Pro line. It starts easily and has plenty of oomph for mulching, even in grass that's a little too long and too wet. Having a throttle control is nice for when the conditions aren't so challenging, and the engine doesn't need to run at full bore.

My wife likes the new mower because I no longer come into the house reeking of two-cycle oil smoke, and I like it because mowing the lawn is a lot easier and faster. The no-rust deck and sturdy appearance suggest that I'll probably have it around for a long time. If it's as durable as my old Lawn-Boy, it may outlive me! ... Read more
