It started on the first pull and worked flawlessly in our 1/3 acre yard. The first time this mower used three tankfuls of gas, but this was because the grass and weeds in our lawn had grown nearly 18 inches high (we'd recently moved in). The second time I mowed the lawn I only used a tank of gas, which indicates how economical this model is to own and operate. The self-propelling feature was good enough to allow me to handle the mower, even on hilly parts of the back yard. The instruction book is easy to follow, the mower itself is well-packed and easy to remove from the shipping carton, and set-up was a breeze. Performance is outstanding. If I had it to do all over again, I'd still purchase this model, which is the best compliment I can bestow. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review The trimmer mower provides three cutting length options from 1-1/2 to 5 inches. An extended trimmer head permits the mower to reach grass under low-hanging bushes while simultaneously protecting users from flying debris. The trimmer also comes equipped with a head clutch to enable a safe, quick, and easy engine shutdown. The 14-inch ball-bearing rear wheels resist rust with a sturdy composite nylon construction as they help push the trimmer with a minimum of friction. The trimmer mower comes assembled with a complimentary oil supply. Troy-Bilt offers a limited lifetime warranty and a product registration program. This trimmer mower covers a width of 22 inches. --Jessica Reuling Features

If you take the time to do this, you will see that this is a very poor design! Please keep in mind that it does not matter if the machine is self propelled or push type. It also does not matter if it is a two stroke or a four stroke engine. The problem I have experienced is the poor quality and very poorly designed deck. Before buying this type of lawnmower, ask your self, "If it is so great... why do they offer a two year warranty?" My advice would be if a tool or machine has a two year warranty, do not buy it! Also, please keep in mind that the Toro Company is based in Bloomington, MN! I would be very skeptical of any positive review from that part of the country.
Keep in mind, the product description is not accurate-the mower deck is steel, not aluminum.

Consulting Consumer Reports Magazine I found this mower to be rated a best buy. I don't know why... The mower looks great. That's the good news. The mower arrive in good time (Amazon has been great in this regard), but it arrived damaged. Not uncommon I would guess, since there was no packing in the box!!! Rattling around in UPS trucks and apparently dropped from great height, the rear wheel adjuster lever was bent and twisted and jammed into the wheel. Luckily I'm handy and 45 minutes and one bandaid later I was adding oil and gas and heading for the lawn. Thank you Consumer Reports, but here's my review: The cut left a noticeable number of blades standing proud above the others, thus requiring two passes to properly shear the lawn. This mower likes to be heard. Its Briggs and stratton engine would easily drown out the din of a nearby locomotive. Buy this mower, buy good ear protection. This mower will really shake you up. Something's not quite balanced. I checked the blade, although it came dull it was balanced just fine. If you're mowing for more than 15 minutes expect numb hands. Wow ball bearing wheels... give them a good spin and watch them come to stop after about 5 seconds. One wheel wobbles noticeably. Compared to my old Murray with sleeve bearing this clunker is a pain to push. A mulching mower should convert blades of grass to confetti which magically disappear in the turf. This mower leaves a trail of unmulched blades on top of the turf. And what power...? its six point five horsepower engine bogs down in the more lush areas of my lawn. My old 5 HP would mow down these areas without losing an RPM. Finally, go to the Yard-Man website and try to find a path to submit a question, good luck, it's next to impossible. Buried deep within their site you can find a phone number (not toll free), but no email address in which to ask questions (ie. complain) about this fine product. Consider this mower only if looks are important -- it's darn good looking.
Save yourself some time and headache and pick up your tools and hardware up at the local store. At least there you'll know that the item you pick up is brand new, not refurbished or defective.

The only glitch is that if you stop it to go from one part of your property to another (should you need to wheel the mower over concrete or asphalt), it is tough to restart. It will restart, but you have to wait a few minutes and then pull the cords several times for it to start up.It's a little annoying, but overall I'm very glad I bought this mower.

Amazon.com Review While many other standing trimmer mowers feature sharp steel blades, the Trim Max uses a 0.155-inch diameter cutting line for greater safety. Users can adjust the lines tension belt for greater performance and extended belt life. The trimmer mower cuts a wide 22-inch breadth and automatically turns off when idle, saving fuel and energy and adding further safety. Powder paint covers all metal parts for greater durability. The trimmer head is located on the left side of the mower while 14-inch wheels allow the trimmer mower to turn corners deftly while providing clearance in rougher terrain. To prevent debris from clustering around the machine, Swisher built a debris guard onto the rear of the trimmer mower. The Trim Max also benefits from easy care as all bearings are sealed, eradicating the need for lubrication. The simple task of replacing the cutting line requires no tools, and the trimmer mower runs on regular unleaded gasoline. The trimmer mower comes with one container of engine oil, a replacement trimmer line, and protective goggles. Swisher offers a limited one-year warranty in the event of defective parts or construction. The engine is covered by a separate Briggs & Stratton warranty. The Trim Max measures 35 by 22 by 21 inches and weighs 85 pounds assembled. --Jessica Reuling Features Reviews (3)

Someone mentioned in their review they bought this mower because it's a 2 stroke motor? It's powered by a 4 stroke Tecumseh engine. I have owned the mower 2 years. I never changed the oil, serviced the spark plug, or even cleaned /replaced the air filter, and it starts on the first pull, and runs like clockwork. The only servicing I have performed is sharpening of the blade. During season I mow my dense Floratam lawn on every third day, and once a week in the winter. My mower doesnt get a break. It is in service 12 months a year. I have had zero issues with my Lawn-Boy mower.
I have a lot of steep hills on my property and was forced to purchase this item for the two-cycle engine. Toro/Lawn-Boy brags about the 14 gauge deck: all this means is it is a cheap deck that will not hold up over time. Please note that they use a plastic housing underneath the deck... This is a cheap, poorly designed product! Lawn-Boy/Toro brags about the staggard/off-set wheel design: all this means is that you will not be able to cut close to any thing, that it will dig into your lawn and the spinning blade will be damaged. (Keep in mind that they use a plastic housing in this area and they do not offer parts for this, I had to purchase a used deck when the blade destroyed the plastic housing.) Toro/Lawn-Boy brags about repeat customer loyalty: I will not be a repeat buyer. This machine does not mow, mulch, or do much of anything else for that matter. After replacing the cheap blades made by Toro/Lawn-Boy three times in one season, I had a custom blade made for it. I also contacted Toro/Lawn-Boy to find out if they made a standard deck that would fit the engine. It took two calls, three letters to Toro, and a complaint letter to the BBB, before they would answer my question... based on this, customer service is very poor. All I needed was a yes or no, after all that I found out that No they do not make a standard deck which would work with the engine... Again Customer Service/Support is very poor. Do not buy this machine! Do not buy this machine! Do not buy this machine!

I've had the mower for a short time and have been very happy with it. It starts on one pull, has good power, and the drive system works smoothly. Lawn Boy calls it a variable speed but really it is a one speed with a clutch that can slip. Holding the drive bar all the way up engages the drive; letting up a little allows the clutch to slip for a slower speed. It works well. If you don't bag clippings, mulching is the way to go...no bag or chute to mess with and no clippings to dispose of. The mower can also side discharge by switching the insert on the mower deck. That's why I said everything you need (good mowing with a useable drive system)and nothing you don't (bagging and complicated drive system). Combine that with a good price and the 10356 starts to look like a winner. I can't speak to its longevity yet but my other Tecumseh engine (Murray lawn tractor) has been going 15 years.
Talked to many shops... all admitted the lawn boys run lean and surge as a result. Any amount of dirt in gas will lean out mixture even more. Result is disassembly and clean as necessary. Very bad in long run for 2 stroke engine - it gets its lube from the pre-mixed gas - lean mixture will result in poor lube and premature engine failure. My options: BTW, called lawn boy, like talking to robots. More info from shops and people in the trade, despite flashy lawn boy website. Suggestion for lawn boy: design a carb that has built-in clearing needles (that be pushed through FROM the outside of the carb, to clear the jets instead of disassembly. Could not get that message across the "person" I spoke with. Finally, damp grass plugs up the exhaust chute real easy. I can NOT recommed lawn boy 2 strokers (or else you will be doing what I'm doing). And the 4 strokers that are out there beat the lawn boy. Lawn boy is not what it used to be... Good Luck with your choices, hope this helps. Hope lawn boy listens...
I purchased this lawnmower from Amazon.com last August (2003) It was delivered to my door via UPS. I opened the box and inspected it last August, but did not use it until today. 6/7/04. (I had it stored in my garage.) I pulled it out of the box, put the oil and gasoline in, it started on the first try. It runs fine. I had no problems whatsoever. I figured I'd share the positive review about this product. I don't know if I just got lucky, or if the other reviewers were just unlucky.

Get the comparable 2-Cycle Lawn-Boy, Model 10424, and you will be delighted with the overall performance.NO FILTHY OIL CHANGES, EITHER!
This is a great machine. And the price is right.
So far, it's performed well, both bagging and mulching. The self-propelled feature is great, a real treat after years of pushing. I use only the lower two speeds; third gear is almost too fast for me to keep up with, and faster than I'd ever mow anything. I have lots of trees, shrubs, and other obstacles on my lawn, so handling was a top priority. I had previously tested a mower with Toro's variable-speed "Personal Pace" system (what's called "Easy-Stride" on Lawn-Boy models), and found it touchy - far too easy to pop wheelies with. I wanted more control, particularly while turning and jockeying, and the 10528's more traditional drive system provides it. The only problem I've found is that the drive wheels sometimes lock up when pulling the mower in reverse. The engine is an OHV Tecumseh, a more advanced version than what's offered on Lawn-Boy's current Silver-Pro line. It starts easily and has plenty of oomph for mulching, even in grass that's a little too long and too wet. Having a throttle control is nice for when the conditions aren't so challenging, and the engine doesn't need to run at full bore. My wife likes the new mower because I no longer come into the house reeking of two-cycle oil smoke, and I like it because mowing the lawn is a lot easier and faster. The no-rust deck and sturdy appearance suggest that I'll probably have it around for a long time. If it's as durable as my old Lawn-Boy, it may outlive me! ... Read more
