5-0 out of 5 stars This is where "hammer drills" start
If you are done drilling 3/8" tapcons and need to drill a real hole in concrete you have to put the cordless down. I did a lot of checking before I bought a hammer drill because I wasnt experienced with these drills. I expanded my work to include exterior foundation work. You need a quality hammer drill to do the job right. This Bosch SDS rotary is perfect for drilling those 1" holes in concrete or brick,or chiseling out brick. If you are not going to be drilling 2" holes through your foundation, you dont need any more drill than this.Anything smaller than this is a waste. This Bosch is a work horse and is still easy on the hands.

2-0 out of 5 stars okay for drilling
I am a contractor who uses a rotary hammer a few hours per week. I bought the Bosch 1 1/8 inch sdsplus rotohammer about 3 weeks ago, after a reconditioned and used milwaukee unit stopped hammering (after about three weeks). I was pretty happy, at first.
A few days ago, I checked out some of the reviews on here, and grew concerned about the chuck loosening up. Sure enough, when I checked it out, it moved about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch with a 12 inch bit. I took it back.
B.T.W., I contacted Bosch, and they basically said that SDS-Plus hammers aren't designed for much chipping. I do chip alot, so I am probably going to take thier suggestion and get an SDS-Max hammer. I may still get a Bosch.
If you are planning on buying this hammer for drilling, it is probably a great tool (and the case is very well organized). If you plan on doing any chipping besides some very light chipping, I suggest getting an SDS-Max or spline drive. You may be disappointed in any SDS-Plus hammer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big Bang For The Price
This drill has seen 100's of holes, & keeps going strong. Would highly recomend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for chipping brick
I just completed stripping approximately 5,000 brick off my house (we're rebricking). I looked into renting a tool for this job and I realized I could justify the purchase of my own tool for the amount of work I needed to do. As I wanted a tool that could be used for more than chipping/stripping brick, I began to lean toward the "combination" rotary hammers. I had a tough time finding any reference to their use for stripping brick. After much research, I settled on the Bosch 112326VS mainly because the SDS+ tools are in the middle of the size range (SDS MAX are larger) plus the price was acceptable. I chose the 11236VS over the 11224VSR (7/8" SDS+) simply because I hoped that the slightly bigger tool would be a benefit in chipping. So I'm here to state that I had very good success with the Bosch 11236VS for this purpose. Incidently, I used the 1-1/2" chisel (also by Bosch) which still has plenty of life left.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality again
Poor quality again, January 25, 2004
Reviewer: Handyman, Jack of All Trades from Hendersonville, NC US
This model of the Bosch line of rotary hammers is a failure. Less than a days work and the chuck is so sloppy as to make the tool impractical to use. I am returning it to my home improvement center. It has nice features but just is not durable in chipping mode. The tool was used to chip out 9 cinder block house vents. After the fourth vent the chuck became extremely sloppy. I hope Bosch can fix this problem. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Drill, Good Price
I just finished using this drill to drill 6 lag bolt wholes into brick and the occasional block. The drill performed excellently, although it did get pretty hot, probably because my bit was too old. I would recommend this drill to a HOMEOWNER only; as a contractor, carpenter, mason, plumber, etc, would probably burn it out after 5 or 6 uses. Still, for my purposes (use it once about every month) the drill is fine.
The case is also great, because you can store a ton of masonry bits in all its "nooks and crannies".

2-0 out of 5 stars Unhappy
The 3rd time I used this drill for a real project it went snap and the drill bit does not turn anymore. It is out of warranty so now I have to pay to get it fixed. I think I will buy a Milwaukee before I pay half the price to have it repaired. To be fare I was drilling 3/4" holes in 50 year old concrete 2" deep and it broke on the 5th one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good hammer drill for the money.
I have use this drill for brick, masonry, concrete and even hard field stone. It does great as long as it is used properly.

What this means:
Use it in moderation (as with any power tool that heats up)
Do not use a dull bit. This will generate excessive heat.
It should'nt take 15 minutes to drill a hole.
Don't mistakingly use the regular drill feature as a hammer drill. (I have seen this happen with inexperienced users)
Use the hammer feature to your advantage. Put a little force behind it. That is what the side handle is for.

I am not saying this is the best hammer drill out there but it does cost as much either. Don't expect this drill to make large holes for huge anchor bolts or even pipes. Common sense says, if you need to drill a bigger hole get a bigger tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Drill - When Used Properly
I have had my 505 for about 3 years now and have not had any problems with mine. Most people don't use hammer drills properly and that's why this one has had a bad rep on Amazon.com. Hammer drills are more for smaller holes in concrete and brick and the occasional large hole. The largest hole I think I have ever drilled with mine is 5/16" and the drill will drill these all day long. If you want to drill larger holes in masonry,or want a drill that will do whatever you ask of it, get a rotary hammer. They are designed for more abuse and have a larger capacity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dewalt should go back to the drawing board with this one!
As a professional home remodeler, I have owned just about every brand of tool out there. The majority of my power tools are Makita and my nail guns are Senco. I own and love the Dewalt 12" compound miter saw and when looking for a 1/2" corded hammer-drill I bought the Dewalt. BIG MISTAKE ! The first one I bought smoked itself after about 15 minutes of moderate use. I brought it back to the dealer and Dewalt replaced it under warranty. I used the replacement drill about three or four times drilling 1/2" anchor bolt holes with no problem. Yesterday, I switched the drill from hammer to straight drilling and the twist lever located near the chuck fell out of the drill along with the pins! The engineers at Dewalt need to take a serious look at this drill's design and quality control. If you are buying a new hammer-drill, this IS NOT the one to buy! I have since bought the Milwaukie 1/2" hammer-drill kit and I am very happy with the quality and construction. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

You get two tools in one when you buy this kit. Milwaukee's Magnum hammer drill can be used as a regular drill for boring in wood or metal, or it can be switched over for use as a hammer drill, allowing percussion carbide-bit drilling in concrete and masonry. You can feel the quality of this tool when you hold it--its reinforced nylon resin casing, which is lighter and stronger than metal, offers better heat dissipation and chemical resistance. We found the convenient keyless chuck on this model to have an impressively tough grip, even in the toughest concrete drilling applications.

Of course, when a hammer drill is used in heavy-duty industrial situations, the brushes wear out quickly. Taking this into account, Milwaukee's Magnum drill conveniently comes with a removable brush cartridge system so you can change brushes in seconds (there are even two extra brushes stored inside). We also liked the Quik-Lok cord set, which makes it easy to switch cord lengths (if you have one of the optional cords). There's also a handy depth guide adjustment that makes it easy to repeat accurate holes. While the dual operation of this drill is a great feature, if you intend to use it primarily for wood and metal work, you may want to consider a drill designed for that purpose; the Magnum, because of its dual-action capability, is larger and heavier than standard drills. But if you're interested in a tool that can handle both applications, we think this is a great choice. --Tim Block ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I have used this drill on numerous occations and have yet to be discoraged with it's preformance. It is a small yet sturdy drill for: wood, brick, block, and metal. My employer supplies this drill to my coworkers also. I would buy this drill for at home use due to it's many applications.

2-0 out of 5 stars What was I thinking?
I am a DIYer out of the home that needed a hammerdrill for projects in my basement and brick exterior. I bought this as I thought Milwaukee was "THE" tool company. My friend was helping with some tapcon anchors in the basement and was using my very expensive hammerdrill. He criticized it's lack of power and laughed a bit. Came back a few minutes later with a Dewalt hammerdrill. Big difference - much lighter, faster and it doesn;t look so archaic. I returned the milwaukee and just borrow my friends drill now. I did some checking - the Dewalt is cheaper anyways.

2-0 out of 5 stars I got the lemon and warranty service difficult
My magnum was hardly used in the 6 months that I've owned it. Hi-Low switch only drives drill when on Hi. Keyless chuck requires a gorilla to tighten bits. During light drilling of softwood, something snapped inside and the motor froze. Obviously something is critically wrong, so maybe I've got the lemon. The local authorized dealer (referred to by corporate offices) claimed to be too busy with their rental service to repair the drill, and they wanted me to pay the shipping to have it serviced at another center which had no telephone or other contact. Corporate offices were business like and rude.

5-0 out of 5 stars First choice for general-purpose drilling.
We now have three of these in the company tool-box, and they all get used on a daily basis. An exceptional combination of power and features (keyless chuck that really works, variable speed, high and low speed ranges, reverse, drill only, hammer/drill, and a detachable cord for convenience) have made these the only corded-drills we now use. The only draw-back to be found is the rather inconvenient lock-on button, which is rather difficult to access at times. Being the only negative point, we all fell that this is a small issue, indeed! Highly recommended, and once used, highly apprecciated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough
Bulletproof drill. Have drilled hundreds of holes in concrete walls for anchors etc, Tortured the thing drilling holes into a granite wall - Bits gave up but the drill didn't. Don't hesitate on this one. Keyless chuck is a big plus, very strong grip - sometimes hard to undo. Low-end torque is not as good as I'd like, but torque is not what I bought it for. The other big plus is the Milwaukee removable/interchangeable cords. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The real deal
Smooth and torquey. Very easy to handle. For most jobs I prefer this to a heavier model. It is refreshing that this power tool comes in a useful case that actually can hold more than the tool and a bit. I'm not big on the plastic cases supplied with power tools these days since they take up too much room and have no space inside for anything else. This metal case is actually useful. The supplied bits are pretty high quality too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality drill
I've had my 5397-6 3/8" Heavy Duty Hammer Drill for a few months and used it a lot. It has performed flawlessly. I have yet to do any all day drilling in hard granite, but it goes through concrete and limestone like butter. It has the solid feel and smooth action you expect from a Milwaukee tool. It switches out of hammer mode with a simple turn of the chuck collar. I do wish it had the detachable power cord like the 1/2" model, but that is a minor issue. The depth stop mechanism is a little cheesy, but it seems to work fine (I dont use it that much). The 3/8" capacity is plenty for most applications, I'm usually drilling for Tapcons, and its perfect. The case is typical Milwaukee, very sturdy. The set of bits included with the drill are good quality. I am very happy with the 5397-6 and would recommend it without reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3/8" work horse
I run a large automotive repair shop. We relocate equipment and perform building maintenance on a regular basis. Our technicians have asked for a hammer drill for a long time. I finally broke down and got them one. In the past we borrowed a 1/2" hammer drill(a different brand). Our techs claim the 3/8" Milwaukee drills faster with less vibration. They love the balanced lightweight design. The masonary drill bits included are first rate, I have not replaced any of them yet. The case is top quality and has enough room to hold some of our most common fasteners. The depth guage does seem a little cheesey at first, but it works fine, mounting behind the removeable side handle. Overall truly a 5 star product ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For [most] all of your concrete drilling needs...
I bought this drill because I needed to secure a few walls to the concrete floor of a basement. Okay, so it was overkill, but I'm not much on renting. Did the job, no problem. That was expected. I then used it to "cut" a large chunk out of the foundation so I could add a door to the outside from the basement. The foundation is 12" poured aggregrate, and here in Mass. (next to NH, the Granite State), the aggregate contains quite a bit of granite. Anyway, 150 or so holes later (1/2 holes, all the way through the 12" aggregate), the chunk is out and the door is in. In short, I don't believe a mickey-mouse drill would have drilled 1 of those holes, much less all of them.
Took quite a while (several evenings), mainly because bits don't do well when they hit granite. Nonetheless, the drill worked (and still does work) great. No problems recommending this one highly. Heavy duty? Without a doubt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good drill
I burned out Dad's old hammer drill, and I needed
one to finish my job and get him a replacement.
Unfortunately, Dad has not yet got ahold of this one.

In hindsight, I wish I had gotten the keyless chuck
version, but this is a rugged piece of equipment.
It has enough power to easily rip the drill from
your hand if the bit happens to grab ahold of something.
And dual variable speed is a nice touch.

What I dont like about it is that the collar to
switch from hammer to regular drill is easily
bumped and switched inadvertently.
Also, the power cable must be detached from the
drill before it will fit into its carrying case.
Attaching and removing the cord is relatively easy,
except in dark corners, but I wish the case
were just a bit bigger so that I wouldnt have to
attach and detach the cord everytime I get the
drill out and put it away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I expected and then some!
I bought this drill because I needed to drill some 1/2" holes in concrete. Before buying, I read a number of reviews of both this drill and others (by DeWalt, Bosch, etc.). This drill got the most favorable reviews, and after using it I can see why. It drilled the holes like it was drilling through warm butter. I didn't notice it heating up, but I only had to drill 25 such holes for this particular task. I did have the problem of the locking ring slipping from hammer to drill, but only once and that was while drilling the first hole. If it had happened again I'd blame the drill, but it didn't so I blame myself. I had no problems with the trigger hole pinching my finger, although ... the trigger lock is in an awkward position. Nonetheless, I give it five stars because it drills like five stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars ALMOST perfect
Although we have used this model for years, it is gradually being replaced by a similar model which has a keyless chuck. Once you get used to the keyless, it becomes difficult to find fault with the system. This particular model works beautifully, performing all appropriate tasks without a hitch. If you need a half-inch hammer drill, this is clearly my first choice in a keyed-chuck model.

5-0 out of 5 stars When you won't settle for less than the besr
The old addage, "you get what you pay for" is so true. There are other less expensive hammer drills out there, but none will stand the test of time as this one will. By the time you compare buying a case and drill bits alone, this stands out as a great deal. I worked for an HVAC company in Alaska, and believe me, I put this drill to the test. This time, the drill is all mine, and to be sure, my son will enjoy in the years to come as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best
I use this hammer drill to place expansion bolts in stone for rock climbers. My experience in hard sandstone is that the tool will drill around 10 holes with a new bit, 3/8" by 4" deep before needing a recharge. It's light and fast and seems to be fairly durable, a big improvement over the old Bulldog. But when it comes to real power in a cordless hammer drill think Hilti as in model TE5. I used one of those a while back and although a bit heavier this thing drilled 15 holes and was still going strong when I had to quit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What an awesome investment!!!
I am a handyman/ and I do alot of remodeling. I was doing alot of jobs that called for a hammer drill. I finally broke down and purchased one on a clearence sale. The Milwaukee SDS Rotary hammer drill. I believe that the manufacturor has underated this tool. It has three modes; drill, hammer drill and chisel. The chisel mode has multiple positions when you use the mode selector switch. The manufactor states that when your in chisel mode it will handle light chiseling. I beg to differ. I was remodeling an old bathroom that had 3 inch poured floors with set in porcelin tile. I watched as my partner with all his might and a hammer sweated through a short session of demo. I told him when he got tired to let me know. I got out the hammer drill and selected chisel mode. It took only minutes to demo the floor. The hammer drill punched through the floor like a hot knife through butter. We starred at the broken up floor with amazment. I had no sore muscles or banged up hands. I have used it for other jobs involving hardened bloch that I could barely chip with a small sledge hammer and the hammer drill tore through it without hesitation. The drill mode has alot of torque for those heavy drilling applications like landscape beams. There is a convertor chuck that allows you to use normal shank bits. Do not use cheap mason bits this drill will eat them up. The drill is capable of drilling a 4 inch diameter core hole in concrete. Now for the small complaint I have is; I am left handed and when I use the accessary handle it doesn't allow me to tighten it down without hitting the locking nut. (Really not worth complaining about. This is as valuable as a sawzall is to a remodelor. ... Read more

This 1/2-inch chuck hammer drill is designed for drilling holes in brick, cement block, concrete, wood, metal, and resin plate. With additional accessories it can also be used to grind, sand, and polish wood and metal, or to tighten or remove screws. It's powered by a 5 amp motor and has trigger-controlled variable speed from 0 to 2,900 rpm, as well as a variable speed dial to set a speed range. The trigger can be locked on to reduce finger fatigue, and the tool can be operated in hammer drill or drill only modes depending on your application. This hammer drill can drill up to 5/8-inch holes in concrete, 1/2-inch holes in steel, or up to 1-inch holes in wood. The FDV16VB is constructed with ball and needle bearings for durability, has a keyed chuck for easy bit changes, and comes with a carrying case. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hammer Drill?
I bought one, tried to drill a 5/16" hole (half the rated capacity) in concrete with a new masonry bit and smoked the bit. The drill is too fast, even on it's lowest speed to effectively drill holes in concrete, maybe concrete blocks, but not concrete. I took it back 20 minutes after trying to use it. I have other Hitachi products that I am happy with, but not this one. If you want a hammer drill, keep looking, this isn't one...

1-0 out of 5 stars FDV16VB Hammer Drill
I purchased this drill at a local discount lumber yard
and took it home for a personal try,on installing a 1/2 inch drill on second hole thur a 2x4 the drill made a noise and smoke came out the drill, i do not recommend this drill to no one thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good light duty drill for the jobs around the house
Since I have a lot of little jobs around the house this easy to handle light and durable piece of machinery is just the thing I need. The first instinct is to buy a powerful tool but this being a second drill I decided some thing light and easy to use is just what I really need. The drill is quite powerful for its size/weight and its variable speed can be used for driving. The drill would warrant a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the variable speed trigger, which is not as smooth when trying to variate the speed, but with regular use I've learned to feather the trigger for driving screws. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great timesaver
I bought the Makita to help in renovating a remuddled kitchen. I wanted to clear the stove/sink wall of poorly installed ceramic tiles which looked daunting if done by hammer and chisel. Much to my surprise, using the Makita, I was done remarkably fast...with a bonus of it being enjoyable. The tool is comfortable to hold and of reasonable weight. In fact I was done before any fatigue set in. The variable speed trigger gave me very exacting control of chisel penetration and minimized wall damage. Eye and ear protection of course is a must. I'm now considering the bathroom. For removing tile it excels. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The first thing you'll notice about Bosch's rotary hammer is its great ergonomics, which clearly were a major consideration in the design of the hammer. The grip and trigger mechanism are well integrated, especially the front grip, and long enough to accommodate different body styles (I've got long arms; my buddy is the opposite: we both liked the tool's feel). For a rotary hammer, design is especially critical during overhead and down-drilling operations, where fatigue can quickly rear its ugly head. The tool's vario-lock positioning is great; it gives you 36 different working angles to choose from so you can modify the tool to fit the application. Likewise, the hammer offers three operational modes: hammer only, rotation only, and hammer with rotation. Are there drawbacks? Not many. The bit-changing mechanism is a little stiff and a little cumbersome, perhaps--but that's a pretty minor negative in a tool that otherwise provides such pleasant operation. The people at Bosch really know what they're doing, and it shows in this tool. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality, Power, Features.. It has it all
I bought what to my guess is the 220v version of this hammer. Exact same feature set and spec - except for the AC line.

I went out and bought it after a drain pipe, which was laid in concerete in my house started leaking, at first I started chiseling using a cold chisel and a sledge - few hours work to get to the pipe. Then I also had to reach another point in the pipe and decided that I had enough.
Breaking through the same thinkness of concrete using the Bosch hammer (in hammering only / rotation lock mode) took less then 10 minutes, and was very easy on the operator (me).

A few weeks later I used it to set three 3/4" anchors in a concrete wall in my building. Drilling the holes - 5 inches deep each, was a breeze.
Safety clutch worked very well. In fact, I was not even aware that this hammer had a safety clutch until the bit hit a reinforcement steel rod - rotation action instantly stopped, while hamerring action continued. I didn't feel even the slightest torque blow on my hands when it happened, and, pulling the bit back was fairly simple thanks to the fact that the hammering action still functioned.

Also, the internal reduction gear makes this tool a good choice for screw driving, it succeeded where similar power, but higher RPM, electrical drills had failed.
My unit came with an automatic three jaw chuck, which works great for steel and wood drill bits, as well as for screwdriver bits, and takes 10 seconcds or less to replace with the SDS-Plus chuck.

One nitpick - for non-professional use, the SDS bits can get pricy, especially the larger diameter, longer ones: a 16x400mm bit cost me .... (then again, for non-profession use, the whole story is somewhat expensive to begin with...)

I cannot testify for the durability of the tool, since I do not use it so often - you'll have to go for other reviews for that.

This is a well built, ergonomic, powerful, and feature laden tool, all feature are useful - no toy features. and, at least my unit, came in a quality plastic case that I'm using as a day-to-day toolbox for the hammer and it's accessories.

If you can afford it, cannot rent or borrow one when you need it, and do even occasional concrete drilling or chiseling - worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7/8 is plenty for aged concrete
I bought the 7/8" Bosch a few weeks ago to destroy an old concrete porch, clean a large vertical crack in my cement stairs, and to generally cause havoc with a badly designed and poorly executed fieldstone walk that surrounds my little 1938 Tudor Revival House. If you live in an aging concrete house, buy this tool.

I've used the larger Bosch hammers, but could not afford them. I can rent those when needed. This one is light, and has just enough "kick" on the hammer-only function to cut through the rather soft concrete that I'm working on.

I also bought the SDS-to-3-jaw chuck adapter, and that attachment renders a really nasty drill for pressure treated wood.

The tool itself, and the Bosch hammer drill bits and chisels are all high-quality tools. It's a pleasure to use them. The alternative, a cold chisel and baby sledge, is unthinkable now. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Pale by comparison
I am a General Contracter in MD. I've owned several Dewalt drills. One old 12v was left on the driveway and run over by a Chevy Suburban and still runs beautifully. However the 18v is the opposite. We have gone through two batterys and was told at the dewalt center they wear out faster. At 14 months the clutch failed and I was told when replacing the clutch the chuck had to be replaced as well. The tool has cost me 250.00 excluding the purchase price. Using several drills on the jobsite the Big Panasonic eats the competition for lunch. The battery lasts 3 to 4 times as long. Better balance. Better tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
Having done commercial AC for 2 years, this drill proved invaluable. Having used last year's equivalant Dewalt has improved greatly on a tried and true design. The 3 speed is useful as is now 3 batteries can be stored in the case(1 in the drill). The pistol grip is more useful than a T-grip as it applies in-line pressure. The workmanship was flawless as is the new 1/2 chuck. the new chuck with carbide teeth really does as promised and holds bits much better. The only downfall is the battery clip. Though never having a battery fall off it still seems a to loose for comfort. A tip:paint the battery and drill and off color. That's why I bought a new one, someone envied my old Dewalt more than I did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough, Versatile, Lightweight & Powerful
This drill is great. I have this and the 2620 3/8" drill and they are the pair of the century. This drill stacked up against every other drill I tried. The only other drill that came close was the Milwaukee, but it was much heavier. I highly recommend this one. The 977510 is tough, versatile, lightweight & powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you need only one tool
If I could take only one power tool with me! Smooth runningand lots of torque. Hammer action also. Handles like a smaller drill, Easy on the arms when working overhead and size allows you to get into places others don't fit. Uses standard shank drills,a plus. We've used ours to anchor Telco equiptment in concrete floors and walls. If you're not careful she'll go right thru the deck.Thats 3" reinforced concrete with a 3/4" masonry bit. Will do wonders thru Mild Steel. We take it on the jobsite and amaze all those guys with Milwaukee or Bosch drills. It would be well worth if it were only a regular drill. 3 Years of service without repairs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Dust of your Masonary!
This is one, beefy gem of a hammer drill. It has plenty of power to handle ANY of your drilling needs and can make a 1/4" hole through a solid red brick (not the morter)in 42 seconds! Whats nice about this drill is that it's compatable with all your standard-shaft drill bits, unlike an SDS hammer drill in which you would need an adapter to use them. Also, SDS bits are more expensive and sometimes harder to find than standard-shaft hammer bits. When the battery in your cordless drill dies and you forgot to recharge the spare, no problem! Plug it in and press on! Most of my application is to set anchors. With it's 2-speed variable control, it provides great control on a variety of surface textures and reduces "walking" away. The maximum size hammer bit I've used to make a hole so far is 5/8" and had no problems making dust out of a reinforced concrete building. I have no doubt it has enough power to make a 3/4" hole... maybe more! The only drawback I have found is that the hi-low speed switch jams sometimes, and you have to rotate the chuck by hand while turning the switch. This is addressed in the owners manual, but it does slow you down. If you have to drill BIG holes in one-shot, fork over a paycheck and get a SDS or Spline-drive hammer. They are great at doing that job. Otherwise, you can make big holes with this beauty by drilling a circle of smaller holes and chisel them out. Porter Cable makes a great, reliable product. This one is no exception. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works, It Works, It Works !!!
I have a habit of sticking with yellow first of all, But I can't say it does not do the job, I drill holes in cement on a regular basis and it does the job, Though I must say if your going to do alot of drilling into cement with large drill bits over 1/2 inch , you should think about a more heavier duty drill.
This one is small and not something you can really lean on with weight and the plasic case on the drill does not remind me of something that is forgiving. I will be able to get a better judge of this product after it's been droped a few times and still stands up to the task, not that this is what happens all the time, but it will tell you what is heavy duty and what's not !

1-0 out of 5 stars what a piece of junk
I owned this yellow piece of garbage for less than a week. The cheap plastic case cracked while hammering into concrete. I thought I'd go with DeWalt this time since it was cheaper than the Milwaukee. Sure am glad I was able to get my money back and buy a real tool. No more toys for my crew. Milwaukee all the way, I should have known better, I have yet to have any Milwaukee tool fail on me. Don't know why it cracked, maybe it was too cold outside or something, but regardless, that should not have happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drill for the price.
The power delivery on this hammer drill was fantastic. I had a complicated drill operation thru' metal followed by concrete. So I had to switch bits thru' the operation. But it was not a problem and performed better than I anticipated. For $160, you are getting a hammer drill, with 2 speeds and reversing power.

Better get good bits for this baby 'cos it drills good. The bits will most likely be the weak link. The 7.2 amp rating is beat only by the 8.5 amp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drills though thick concrete!
I needed to drill a 1" hole through 14" of hard concrete. Needless to say, my little Black & Decker drill was not up to the job. I first tried a Milwaukee 1/2" Hammerdrill, but the chuck actually broke off from the shank halfway through the hole. I traded it in for this DeWalt and finished the job. Great drill, nice color. ...
