Amazon.com Review

This well-designed planer offers fast stock removal and the smoothest finish--exactly what we expected from Bosch. The powerful 6.5 amp motor runs the versatile two-blade Woodrazor system at 16,500 rpm with a protective shield that covers the section of blade that's not in use. The fence itself deserves applause--bevels are accurate and easy to adjust. We love the chip ejection as well. Too many times, we've tried tools with an exhaust system that might as well not be there, but this one actually moves the removed stock and it's multidirectional! Deep cuts are possible in just one pass without bogging or chatter. There's even a spring-loaded park rest stand that protects blade and workpiece. The saw is a special shape that allows easy start-up in the middle of a workpiece. Accidental starts are a thing of the past because of the lock-off release button. Bosch thought of everything; we're impressed. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Heckuva Tool
Bought this planer the other day to do some doors. It was all I expected and more. Very strong motor - never even appeared to bog down. Good balance. Depth control is very easy to use and accurate. I actually own a Dewalt and a Makita. I bought the Bosch for the features (i.e. the fully adjustable fence, the adjustable chip deflector that actually comes with a WORKABLE shop vac adapter - THAT is great!) and the reputation. I have not been disapointed. The Bosch is the best of the three. Until I got the Bosch I was pretty well satisfied with the Makita with the Dewalt pulling up the rear, but the Bosch is the best of the three by far. Strongest motor, Woodrazor carbide blades, shop vac adapter, and that great fence. You will use the fence. It can be set at 90 degrees or any other angle you want - and there is an adjustagble rabbeting stop that basically lets you take it about as deep and wide as you want. By the way, USE a shop vac with this. It will fill up your shop with shavings in a heartbeat - but with a vac hooked up, not a one hit the floor. Overall, this is a super tool at a very reasonable price. Oh yeah, it's also relative quiet. This one's a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blowing Chunks
I have owned this tool for about 1 year and I must say the Bosch 1594K planer is a very fine example of engineering, function, design and quality all meeting at the same place and time. If you are one who uses a planer at your occupation, you will really appreciate the handling characteristics of this tool, kind of like a Rolls Royce to a Chauffeur. But like most tools of this caliber it has many other rival brands that also are real fine gems within themselves. I do believe that the one solid advantage this Bosch has over the rest of the competing brands is its ability to spew wood chips either to the right or the left. In fact, this planer is so proficient at wood ejection, that from a distance it looks like your blowing chunks!

2-0 out of 5 stars They Need To Re-Think The Fence
Overall the unit is fine, but the fence is made so cheap that you cannot set it to 90 deg. without doing some filing on the slot. This is a very poorly engineered fence and is not like Bosch to put something so cheap on their tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Product
Like a lot of Bosch tools, this is build like a tank. The quality of the construction is first rate. You can't go wrong. Bosch has never let me down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great power, great performance
I purchased this tool to square up some finishes on the deck I'm building (I'm picky). The PT lumber is among the most dense I've used - 16d nails are buckling in this stuff!

Once the decking dried, I took this powerhouse to the mismatched edges that cropped up. NO PROBLEM! It was like a hot knife slicing butter! The extras included in the kit make this machine a top value! The depth adjustment is easy and very accurate, and the dust chute's ability to change discharge sides is a very nice feature when you can't. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When Porter-Cable recently reintroduced this popular planer, professionals everywhere rejoiced. It is widely regarded as the most solid, reliable, and effective hand planer on the market, and we heartily agree. While other tools boast speeds between 12,000 and 15,000 rpm, the Porta-Plane's beefy 7 amp motor runs at 22,000 rpm. Porter-Cable combines that power with a spiral-blade cutterhead that shaves the wood rather than chopping at it the way a straight blade does, producing smoother finished edges than those produced by other power planes. This model has a solid and true stainless-steel bed and integral fence, which bevels from 15 to 90 degrees. The price may seem pretty steep compared to other hand planers on the market, but in this instance you definitely get what you pay for. For pros that expect to do a whole lot of door trimming and hanging, there is no better tool available. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Better Palne for Doors.
Over the years I have tried lots of different ways to fit doors and have not really been satisfied with the end result until after buying this plane and the book "Door Hangers Handbook". The Spiral bit makes all the difference compared to my other straiht blade plane. The cuts are smooth and easy to control. The depth of cut lever is very easy to adjust. The Bevel fence feels real solid compared to other planes I've used. I bevel the sides of the doors to 3 degrees so I just cut a block of wood using my miter saw that has a 90 and 93/87 degree faces. This way I can set the plane to the bevel and back to 90 in a couple of seconds and it is super accurate. One last thing, this plane is much quieter than I thought it would be. I'm actually looking forward to doing more doors with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Doors etc
My wife bought me this machine 25 years ago. I still have the plane, and the wife. It is (the plane) a sweet machine. It is primarily for resizing doors, but I have used it for a jointer of sorts with good success. If you are a door man/person (sorry) its the one for you. I assume it still comes with a carbide blade. If you want to surface plane, you want something else, but for up to about 2.5 inches this is the one.

Hope this helps. JA

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of all electric hand planes
I have owned this electric hand plane for about 22 years. The bearings have been replaced several times. Also, the cutter has been sharpened several times. In addition I own a few other planes. But this one is by far the best in terms of smoothness of cut and reliability. It is easy to adjust and use. I used some other Porter Cable planes and this is still the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Porta Plane
Excellent tool for door installation, doesn't have an equal.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PorterCable classic
When I learned that this classic model is in its last production run, and that stocks are limited, I ordered one immediately. This is the best production planer ever, period! The price is a little steep compared to the competition, but you're paying for the the quality and design. I haven't used it to hang any doors yet, but I know I will. This tool is my companion for remodeling carpentry work. It helps me to shape framing members to fit inside the walls and floors of my 1930's vintage home where nothing is square or level. I use it when drywalling to straighten out bowed studs and ceiling joists, too. My craftsmanship has been improved greatly by owning this wonderful tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Porter-Cable Power Planer
A must for interior and exterior slab door replacement. Most competitors' planers tend to slow and 'bog' down when using maximum cutting depth -- especially with hardwoods. This is my second PC Planer for home shop use. Like most other Porter-Cable power tools, this on is unparalled. Sorry DeWalt...

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid well built tool
I've owned this tool now for about 3-months and have used it a quite a bit. I bought it to plane out bowed wall and ceiling studs prior to installing sheetrock (which is pretty tough duty because the wood is old, dry and hard).

Even pressing down hard at a full 1/8" depth, this unit cuts through wood and knots like a beaver. The motor keeps the blades spinning at full speed without bogging down.

Keep in mind that using a plane (manual or power) requires some practice and skill to perfect the outcome. You just don't slap it down on the wood and start cutting. Most attachments such as fences and guides will help provide some alignment assistance, but you'll still need to develop the skill. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find that it is a real time saver and provides far superior results over other triming, chiseling and planing methods.

Recommendations: * High Power - this is a must-have feature, anything less will be a source of endless frustration. * Heavy Weight - this is one of those times when you don't want light weight. You will need the mass to maintain constant travel and to keep the tool down on the work. * Parts Availability - Power planers are not very popular, so don't buy some goofy off-brand. You may need parts later such as replacement blades. * Safe(ty)... - Eye and ear protection is an absolute must with these tools. Not only do wood chips fly everywhere, they make a loud high pitched screech during operation.

4-0 out of 5 stars planer
I have owned this planer for a couple of years, and it has been very helpful when I get in a tight situation and just need to take a little wood off. It can also take a deep cut in the wood, removing a large amount of wood with one pass. It is a light weight tool, and very powerful.

1-0 out of 5 stars porter cable blew it
I,m a long-time finish carpenter and have used the Dewalt and Makita planners as well as this contraption. This one's a dud. What's with pushing a button to pull the trigger? That's fine for Harry Homeowner, but odd angle starts are next to impossible. And that little ridge at the top of the handle is annoying and painful. Perhaps I missed something when rabbeting with the Dewalt, but with the PC you are advised to move the blades; what a pain. The Dewalt has a strange, not altogether likeable foot on the base for setting the thing down while the motor spins to a stop. No such feature on the PC. It is also poorly balanced. The Dewalt was user-friendly right from the box. If it weren't the boss's tool and the only one on the job I'd send the PC back. The only strong point is that the fence slot seems more durable than the cheezy holes in the thin plastic housing found in the Dewalt. Hold out for the door plane, is my advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleased & Satisfied
I purchased this power planer to trim 10 replacement doors in my home. I just used it for the first time this morning. For the price the tool performed well. If I were a professional carpenter I would recommend buying a better, precision tool. For the handy man this will more than do the job. The quality construction of the tool, the solid tool box and easylight weight use, made this a pleased & satisfied purchase for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal on a planer
I have used this planer primarily on doors in my house. In particular, I've found it long enough to get the start and end of the edge planed without "clipping" the edge. I'm not an expert door-hanger -- but it has easily paid for itself in saved labor costs.

A few words of advice on (interior doors). Plane when your house is MOST humid (usually in the summer) as the doors expand and you want them to close easily when they are most expanded. Be sure to plane an extra 1/64" or so to allow yourself a gap for a primer and at least one if not two finished coats of paint on the side edge of your doors. As for the tops and bottoms, leave them unpainted to allow the wood to dry if they are new doors, otherwise, a matching primer is more than enough and you need not bother with a finish coat of paint. Unless your doors is really badly off, you will not need to re-seat the hardware, but be prepared to if necessary. But before you start, make sure all of your hinge plates are on tight. No use taking a plane to a door if the problem is not the size of the door, but loose hingest. If so, replace the hinge screws with longer ones, and be sure to pre-drill the holes first to prevent cracking the door or jamb wood.

This tool beats hand planing allowing you to complete a door in just a few minutes. It will take you more time to get the door off and remove the hardware than to plane the edges. Adjustments are easy. I found this tool to be almost identical to the Makita planer which I borrowed prior to purchasing this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Planer!!
I needed a good heavy duty planer to scarff 1:8 slope joints in plywood sheets (I build boats). This planer has met all of my expectations. Plenty of power. Accurate cutter depth control. Extremely easy to change/sharpen blades. I would have given it five stars except for the useless chip collection port. Chips and dust dump out right by the motor fan! Small inconvenience though. All in all a very nice tool!

4-0 out of 5 stars big
it has lots of power ,use it to do 2x4 & 4x4 in one pass .will hog well also .but it is big

4-0 out of 5 stars Tymothy Park, builder
I used a friend's Porter-Cable Model 367 power plane and quickly began to wonder how I got along without a power plane for so many years. I thought I'd get the same model Porter-Cable, but it appears Porter-Cable replaced it with another model. Further, all the reviews I read about Porter-Cable power planes in Amazon.com left me somewhat confused so I thought I'd try Makita, a brand with which I've had good success. I went for the 4 3/8" model because I could true a built-up beam in one pass. When I got the Makita I first noticed the weight difference between it and the Porter-Cable. The Makita is heavier and at first blush seemed better suited for a shop rather than a jobsite (one must always keep in mind bigger might not be better). The next thing I noticed is the drive belt on the Makita is not fully enclosed like the one on the Porter-Cable (I nicked my finger with it, and for a brief second I thought it was the blade that nicked me). Finally, the exhaust port on the Makita dumps out the chips (often plentiful) right next to the air intake for the motor (the Porter-Cable has a two door system that lets you vent the chips to either the right or left side). Despite these short comings I really like the Makita. It's way powerful which I believe calls for the extra weight and compared to, say, a Mag 77 worm drive saw it's a fly weight. It's very smooth in part because you're limited to 1/16" cut, the cutter head turns @ 16000 RPM, and my blades don't yet have any nicks in them. For me the bottom line is how much I use a tool, and it's a rare day that I don't press the Makita into service. Compared to no plane there is no comparison. Compared to muscle powered planes, I think you will wonder why it took you so long to power up. Compared to other powerplanes, well let's say the Makita's flaws are evident (are you listening, Makita), but it's still a way useful tool. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Planer has only one blade.
I wasn't sure how many stars to give this since I have never used it. I ordered it and when it arrived I discovered that it is a one-bladed model. Bosch calls this an "electronically counterbalanced single-blade design." From the other reviews this seems to work well, however, I wish that the listing would have indicated this. Hence this little blurb. The extra blade "set" is just another single blade in a bubble pack.
Again, I have NOT used this machine, but have sent it back in favor of a two-bladed design.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the money, you can't beat it...
I purchased this planer hoping it would last at least a few jobs, and was pleasantly surprised. Lightweight, powerful, comfortable to use, and a smooth depth setting takes the guesswork out of it, unlike the Makita's, which I've owned, hated, and returned. A newly converted Bosch enthusaist, I have nothing bad to say, well, except for the lack of a case. Picky, picky, I know

5-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but great for the money
I compared this planer to my previous BOSCH 3272 which was comparable, but not as accessory laden as this model. The tools are similar in cutting specifications; however, the new model has a 5.0 amp motor, the handle is more comfortable, and has decent chip ejection to the right or left ( includes a 2 1/2" vacuum adapter )with a shop vacuum, and includes the new micrograin replaceable blades. The standard edge guide does not bevel, nor does this setup allow for rabbets out of the box. The edge guide works much better with a thin coating of "Slip It" non staining lubricant applied to its face, and it basically stays where it should. It works atleast as well as the Porter Cable model which I am also familiar with. In terms of performance, this unit works well. It is consistent ( with consistent hand pressure ), does a nice job, is lightweight and for the same money as the previous model, it is a great deal with the extras mentioned above. Probably the best of the lot in terms of product for the dollar; however, if you intend to use this unit 7 days a week for years in a row, I would recommend the more expenisve model, as well as the rabbet adapter and bevel guide. Nonetheless, for most DIY and semi-constant use, you can't beat this planer for the money in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Power!
I am happy with its power and performance. It comes with an adjustable 90 degree edge guide. I wished I bought the model that has angle edge guide and the rabbeting depth. Now I have to buy optional edge guide and the rabbeting depth stop again. Other than that this is a great quality tool and it is made in Switzerland. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Value Substitute for Dewalt 680
I used my friends Dewalt 680 planer for a couple of jobs and liked its small size/weight and features. I didn't like its $150 price. So I went looking for and alternative and found this Black and Decker at Sears for $69.99 w/case and extra blades. It looks and performs like the Dewalt but at half the price and w/case, extra blades and wrench(uses dewalt blades), edge guide, dust bag, and vacumn attachment accessories.

The only differences I noticed is the rear shoe is a steel plate instead of cast. The front plate (adjustable for plane depth like Dewalt's) is cast aluminum like dewalt. Also, Dewalt has a
guard lever on its rear shoe that drops down to protect blade when setting planer down on its shoe after use. I actually found
this lever to be a pain when using the Dewalt because it would not always drop down when done with a plane, and it was in the way when you wanted to begin a plane run in the middle of a piece.

I was very impressed with this find and satisfied with this planer and its accessories so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars great value - nice package!!!
after looking at the cost/benefits of the various planers out there, i realized that i really didn't need anything too fancy so i got this to get me through a trim job i'm in the middle of. all i can say is wow. for about $70 you get a very smooth running plane that comes equipped with a dust bag that actually works, a vacuum attachment, two extra reversable blades and a case. it comes with a rip fence but it seems pretty hokey and i wouldn't put too much faith in it. the adjustment knob has very nice detents in it that makes setting the depth a breeze. dont be scared away by the cheap price, this is a very good deal. ... If Bosch has their way, a day will soon come when a full-featured powerful cordless option will be available for any tool a worker needs. This planer is one such example. It's a full-sized and feature-packed cordless version of Bosch's popular corded planer. It offers a 3-1/4-inch planing width and is depth adjustable to 1/16 of an inch. The 18-volt motor spins the blades at 13,000 rpm. The planer uses a ratcheting depth knob for quick and simple adjustments, and in a system unique to Bosch planers, chip ejection can go to the left or the right as needed. It has an electronically balanced single-blade design to reduce drag for a longer run time and smooth finish. While this planer does offer plenty of power, cut capacity, and a full feature set, the battery makes it a bit heavier than its corded cousin (which can actually add to the tool's stability in use) and the handle position is more forward and on top of the tool to accommodate the battery at the back. This model comes with one battery, a one-hour charger, a chip and dust collection bag, and a carrying bag. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars POWERHOUSE PLANER, AWESOME
THIS PLANER FEELS AND RUNS AS IF IT IS PLUGGED INTO A POWER OUTLET. IT HAS LOTS OF TORQUE AND IS AS SMOOTH AS ANY CORDED PLANER I HAVE EVER USED. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING THIS TOOL, I WOULD SUGGEST GETTING IT AND THE CORDLESS JIGSAW AS WELL. THEY HAVE REPLACE MY CORDED ONES, AND WORK BETTER THAN I HAD EVER EXPECTED. I AM A CARPENTER BY TRADE, AND HAVE USED MANY NAME BRAND TOOLS, BOTH ROUGH AND FINISH TOOLS. THIS PLANER KICKS BUTT. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Eats Wood!
I looked at all the planers. I was going to buy a planer with AMPS being my first concern. With a 3.4 amp motor this planer did not fail once. I put this machine to work on rough cut white oak with the blades full bore, and I got tired before this Hitachi planer. My only wish is the shoe as in all planers in this class was 1 inch longer. With a longer shoe or base this would get 5 stars. At this price you cannot go wrong. Blades are a snap to change, and sharpen. This is a nice machine. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

For straight-finished edges and smooth, accurate cuts, the Makita 3-1/4-inch planer kit is a solid performer. Weighing in at just 5.5 pounds and delivering 4 amps of power, the planer provides a high power-to-weight ratio and offers a no-load speed of 15,000 rpm. Like most Makita tools, the planer is solidly built. It's also double-insulated for operator safety. The long-life, double-edged tungsten carbide miniblades perform 30,000 cuts per minute, and the tool's ball-bearing construction means longer life. A precision-machined aluminum base provides added planing accuracy. And user-friendly features such as a lock-on button (for continuous operation) and easy-to-use depth-adjustment knobs make Makita's planer a good addition to any tool chest. As part of this special package, the planer comes with a heavy-duty, weather-resistant tool bag, perfect for transporting materials to and from the job site. --Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but hard to set
I like this tool but as previously said the jig to set the blades is off. This is critical as is any planer. My planer blades were about 0.5 mm off, above the rear plate, causing snipe at the exit of the cut even with pressure on the rear part of the handle. Rather than shimming the plate ,I chose to adjust the jig. The plastic is cast and is not true.I used a digital caliper and machinist square to mill the plastic base(use sand paper on a glass plate or even the rear plate of the planer) and stop and thru trial and error I was able to get the level correct. The jig setting is too long so the blades mount high with respect to the rear plate. This is an important adjustment and Makita did not do a good job on this.
I also have a hard time with the hard case in trying to fit everything in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost the best
I like this Makita, it's made in America.
Here are my opinion about it:
pro: solid, strong,double-edged tungsten carbide mini blades make smooth cuts, quick and easy blade changing
con: my only complaint about this is there's no gauge on depth setting dial.
A good tool to buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works great after some tuning......
I would have expected the factory set-up to be better. The blades were not parallel to the base, so I reset the blades with the jig. After resetting the blades (3 times with the same result), I found the jig set the blades 0.015" higher than the rear shoe, hence it would dig in at the end on the board. I had to compensate by shimming under the front of the rear shoe. Works great now.
P.S. The bonus bag is sweet...it's even big enough for my circular saw. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price
This planer performs very nicely and has plenty of power and a big plus it runs very quiet. It cuts nice and the bottom is nice and flat and so far no sniping. The dust chute picks up about 99% of the chips without a vacuunm. It came out of the box ready to use and completly set up. The guide is a nice bonus. The depth adjustment knob works smoothly and acts a nice front handle. The only thing that is a little difficult is cutting rabbits with the seperate rabbit depth adjustment. It includes a nice plastic case to hold the planer, extra blades, wrench, dustbag, edge guide, extra set of brushes, and extra belt. What was also nice is that the blades are reversible so it is like getting eight blades. The only down size and it is personnel, is that it is built in China. I would have been willing to pay a little more if it was built else where. It performs just as well as the more expensive models. After only owning it for three days I have already planed down 11 interior wood panel doors that were retro fitted into existing door jambs and it did not miss a beat. Using some shims and hot glue on the edge guide got my 3 degree angle on every door or just the edge guide and got a nice 90. How it holds up is another story, but since it is a Grizzly product I have no doubt it will. ... Read more

If Bosch has their way, a day will soon come when a full-featured, powerful cordless option will be available for any tool a worker needs. This planer is one such example. It's a full-sized and feature-packed cordless version of Bosch's popular corded planer. It offers a 3-1/4-inch planing width and is depth adjustable to 1/16 of an inch. The 14.4-volt motor spins the blades at 13,000 rpm. The planer uses a ratcheting depth knob for quick and simple adjustments, and in a system unique to Bosch planers, chip ejection can go to the left or the right as needed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch cordless planer
Bosch has definitely brought the cream to the top with this tool. It leaves its corded cousin behind, the sole plate has multiple v-cuts for chamfering extremely easily with this tool. I am beginning to build a corded Bosch museum, each advance in cordless technology makes corded versions less useful. My next wish on the list is for a multi voltage charging station, that would accomadate about 3 batteries and free up two outlets for me. OK Bosch are you listening? Keep up the great work on tools for the real world. ... Read more

We like this tool. For starters, it offers an easy-to-operate calibrated knob to quickly adjust cutting depth and a deluxe variable-angle fence that allows for different kinds of cutting. In addition, when expelling debris from the planer, a discharge port select level lets you direct the shavings out either side of the tool. And, as always with Bosch, this tool's ergonomic features are superb: excellent weight distribution, a small-width grip you can really get your hands around, and an electronically balanced motor and blade drum that provide super smooth planing. The blades are reversible, too, and they require no adjusting. Plain and simple, this is another solid, sturdy, built-to-last power tool from Bosch. Other companies offer 3-1/4-inch planers for less money--but none are as powerful, easy to use, or well built. --Michael Shilling ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch Plane 3296
I own a large home and am remodeling it top to bottom. I recently purchased twenty doors that need to be installed throughout my home. Some of the doors do not fit and needed to be planed down to fit. I own several cast iron wood hand planes, but due to the extent of the work involved, I thought a power plane would be the best method of accomplishing this task.

I looked at Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Makita and Bosch power planes before I settled on the Bosch Model 3296K. It comes with a steel carrying case, a fence attachment and a rabebtring depth stop. It is lighter than the rest of the models I looked at.

In use, it runs very quitely, has an easy to use adjustment knob on the front to adjust the depth of cut, 1 mm at a time. The plane comes equipped with carbide blades that held up very well.

The front shoe of the plane has a v-groove cut into it to allow for chamfers to be cut.

I installed twenty doors and all of them needed some tweaking. The cuts were smooth and effortless.

I would reccommend this plane, Bosch #3296K, to anyone looking to but a power planer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch 3296K
The Bosch 3296K has excellent performance and functionality along with the best, most complete and versatile guide fence accessory available anywhere. There really is no comparing this unit to any of the other portable planers on the market today. The fence is so much better than the cheap, practically useless, guides offered by most manufactures and adds a dimension of accuracy and precision that could never be achieved repeatedly using a portable planer free hand. Only Porter-Cables top of the line model 9118, which I have used extensively, has a functionally comparable guide fence, but with only a 2-13/32" capacity, the PC is much more limited as to what you can do with it, and is also unjustifiably much more expensive.
The only minor complaint I have with the Bosch 3296K is that the chip chute lever is a little short and can be difficult to move forward after being fully seated in the rear position. It's possible that the lever may become easier to move as the unit gets more worn in, but right now it's a little stiff, even after being lubricated with silicone spray, and often requires two hands to operate. Also a chip bag might also be a nice extra for easier cleanup of quick, small, "hurry up", indoor plane jobs, such as shaving a door edge.
The really bad news is, unfortunately, if you don't already have one of these, you can pretty much forget about ever getting one. Right now, there is a very, very, limited availability of the 3296K. It took me over four months of scouring the web and local suppliers to finally locate and purchase one.
This is due to the fact that even though it is technically still available from some suppliers, Bosch is no longer manufacturing this unit because it is being replaced with a new model beginning in June 2002. The new model will reportedly have three chamfer slots in the shoe, a slightly higher amp motor, still maintain the 3/32" cutting depth capacity, the same excellent guide fence accessory and somehow actually cost a little less. Sounds like it's going to be another excellent unit.
Overall, from my own comparison and usage, as of this date, I personally feel that the Bosch 3296K is the finest and most versatile portable planer kit available from any major manufacturer and definitely money well spent, if you're lucky enough to still find one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A tool worth buying
I work for a finish carpentry company; one of our main stages is installation of doors, The Bosh planer is used to do edge bevels and trimmings fit. Good features are: Good weight distribution. Smooth cutting. Strong motor. Good and firm adjust cutting depth. Nice left or right option on the dischargeable port extractor. Good solid Guiding fence. Poor features are: The back shoe of the planer could had been 1 ½ to 2 inches longer. One or two smaller v groves in the front shoe with the deeper single one only available now. The metal caring box could had been 1 to 2 inches bigger all the way around for easier fitting the planer with the guide fence on, and not having to move the guide in or out every time to use it or store it, even if it is easy to move it. Would I buy this planer again? Yes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great time saver
Had to replace 8 doors and make them fit old openings that were built out of real 2" lumber for the frames. Each one was different. This planer did the job just fine, never bogged down. With the directional chip ports, using it with either hand and any direction left the chips flying away from the operator. For a planer this one is not hard on the ears, not as loud as a circular saw. The fence on the planer never moved from where it was set and to adjust it was easy, its also about 2" high for great support. The only thing that I do not care for is the depth adjustment knob is marked in millimeters and not inches. But a minor detail for such a great tool. I since have used this planer instead of my belt sander on finishing the edges of some shelves, it leaves that clean of a cut. Great planer for the price. ... Read more
