Amazon.com Review

After DeWalt purchased Momentum Laser, it was inevitable they would release their own rotary laser tools. However, this is not just an old tool dressed up in anew yellow housing. Instead, DeWalt has designed from the ground up a completely new rotary laser level.

Probably the coolest thing about this tool is that any existing DeWalt cordless tool battery, from 9.6 to 18 volts, can power it. It runs for 16 hours on an 18-volt battery and 8 hours on the 9.6-volt battery. Built with the rigors of a professional job site in mind, this laser comes with a side-impact, rubber-mounted roll cage. The level is designed for horizontal or vertical application, and the pivoting head makes it easy to switch between the two. While we would like to see a self-leveling system, it doesn't take long to level this tool manually, and the bump sensor tells you if the tool has been jarred and may need releveling. The level uses a patented dual side-by-side laser diode system, which eliminates blind spots caused by obstacles and makes the line more visible. The level is accurate to 1/4 inch at 100 feet, 1/8 inch at 50 feet, and 1/16 at 25 feet.

As with all laser levels currently available, if the diodes become misaligned, recalibration must be done at a service center. And, while other companies offer only one or two service centers, DeWalt plans on having six service centers across the country in order to provide users with fast maintenance turnaround. Professionals looking to take advantage of the accuracy and timesavings of a rotary laser level will appreciate the durability and versatility of this model. Anyone already using DeWalt's line of cordless tools is likely to find this laser to be the ideal choice based on the battery compatibility alone. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A home owner's opinion
I'm not a pro but I do a lot of home projects. I used my neighbors... laser for a walkway I built last summer. When it came time for my garage project I bought this tool from Home Depot. My neighbor and I were comparing features. It is every bit as accurate as his (for my projects, anyway...it won't shoot 2,000 feet but then I don't need that.) Set up took 3 minutes with a tripod to level. The detector worked great on a pole I had for leveling the area. It was a one man operation (which is how most of my projects end up.) The visible line was a real boon for marking sonotubes and the pivoting head for doing a plumb line is just cool! Worked without a flaw. The look and feel is rugged but more important, the thing just works great! Laying out level lines on the trees in the clearing for the garage was simple with the red glasses they provide to better see the beam in light. I marked the entire perimeter in 10 minutes. I haven't tried on ceilings but this is coming in the house when I paint! That red line makes it a breeze to do bi-color walls, chair rails and wainscot that are level around the perimeter. I can see the plumb-line festure being good for lines doing floor tile work, too. Easy to use, rugged and versitile. Personally, I'm very satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks good, works great!
I decided to try the DeWalt laser level when I learned that they will accept the same batteries as my other power tools. Being slightly nervous about a new piece of equiptment and it's accuracy we shot every distance with both the laser and the standard method. It came through with flying colors, and was accurate to less than 1/8" at 40'. I took the sensor and started walking away from the work site and it was still picking up reading at 300', I should have kept walking but I ran out of room. I really like it and would recomend it. I only wish that DeWalt would have taken the initiative and made it self-leveling. But, overall, it is a nice unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this unit
I am an advanced amateur carpenter/builder living on a small horse ranch in Southern California. I bought my DW073KD at Lowe's on an impulse and am in love with the darn thing. I do recognize the notion that self-leveling units are easier to operate. But I have been working with bubble levels all my life and feel very comfortable doing the manual setup. I am doing a remodel in my guest house and have used the unit for everything from laying out recessed lighting to plumbing out a new door in a new wall. The battery power works great and it mates up well with my 12-volt Dewalt drill and trim saw. Went to Lowes last night to buy the tripod and grade rod, then surveyed my property in the dark. Awesome.
P.S. If you are an automation freak, by all means get the latest automatic unit. But if you have craftsman genes, this is a great device.

1-0 out of 5 stars good and bad points
Good points:

1.) you can switch from horizontal measurements to plumb in only seconds

2.) nice roll cage

3.) two diode system is great for getting around obstructions

4.) laser has a lot of great ideas packed into it

What I didn't like:

1.) you can't level it fast enough. it's too difficult to see the bubble

2.) the bubble either travels too far or too little when you adjust it

3.)...it's not accurate enough, EVEN AT CLOSE RANGE.

In summary, I like all the innovations that Dewalt included in this laser package. HOWEVER, it takes too long to center all three bubble vials. And no matter how much time you spend to level the laser, IT IS JUST TOO INACCURATE TO GIVE A GOOD READING AT CLOSE RANGE (25 FT.....Y-I-K-E-S!!!!)

I'm going to ask Amazon to send me a Stabila compact laser.... the reviews are great on that machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars DW073K laser level
RTC Construction, Inc. bought this tool for the purpose of finding level while hanging dropped ceilings, footer digs, leveling for kitchen installs, and establishing other benchmarks.
We found that DeWalt is on the cutting edge with this tool. We were pleased at how it worked in general. It was easy to use and I would not hesitate to recommend this tool. The dual diode was very bright and that was a nice treat.
The only thing I believe that needs to be improved is the bump warning system. It is very sensitive to any movement, and I wonder how the laser will react to a windy day outside. Often we found that the level was still level even while the bump warning light was blinking due to minor movement of a wall or the floor.
One other thing that needs improvement is the green vile to find level. The viles were hard to see in low light. Mounting to the ceiling, we had to use a flashlight to read the vile. Part of the problem was due to low lighting, but the other part was due to the green vile.
I was happy not to have to buy alot of accessories with this tool. It had all the essential accessories to get the job done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely orders
I just received my 3rdhand contractor pack that I had ordered on 05/17/04. It arrived on 07/17/04.after I cancelled my order through Amazon.com and reordered directly from TOOL CRIB using there 800-635-5140 number it only took 4 days to receive the order. I suggest that if you want a tool from Amazon.com, you order it direct from Tool Crib.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd Hand - my 24/7 "on call" helper
My 3rd Hands from FastCap are always available, never late for work, and will hold things in place for days if called upon to do so. Better yet, they do not get a paycheck! I have used these tools for installing cabinets, holding blocking in place while glue is setting up, installing mouldings and doors, setting up a dust barrier before sanding, and with the larger Universal Foot - installed sheetrock. While I wouldn't recommend this product for jacking full sheets of rock, they work very well for holding smaller pieces in place. They seem to handle the 70 lb capacity easily and are holding up well after repeated use. An excellent investment!

2-0 out of 5 stars Risky Buy
My supports arrived with no visable damage to the box but when I opened one up, the small plastic joint for the hand was broken off. I could use a good support of this type but this one is a bit fragil.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my back!
Got 4 of these units. Have used them for installing kitchen cabinets on two jobs so far. WOW! once you get the hang of adjusting it and getting it in place, they are better than having a work partner. They don't give opinions. They just do their job. The loads I have put on them have been fairly heavy and they still held it using multiple jacks.

Found them very useful too for acting as pushers when installing a deck to push some deck boards into line when they are a bit warped.

Used these jacks as floor to ceiling push clamps during a wood floor installation. After gluing in place the wood flooring, placed a scab 2x6 plank on leading edge of new floor and used these jacks to apply some downward pressure keeping all the installed floor snug and down tight until the adhesive set up. The floor is beautiful.

Expect to also use them soon to hold up a plastic barrier around an area I will be working in order to control dust and dirt migration. Could work very well if you are spray painting indoors.

Always carry at least two of these with me at all times now.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd hand, my helper
I purchased the set of "3rd hands" with hopes of the jacks helping to hold items an poly walls. After haveing it for less then one week, I just love it. I work alone most of the time doing remodeling and new home trim and etc. most of the time. In remodeling the poly temp. wall keeps customers happy, but the 3rd hand keep me happy. Hanging cabinets, installing long ceiling molding, esspecially getting the cut mark. Holding up and in perfect place pocket door tracks. Had to cover the wood unfinished ceiling so the spray insulation guys could do their thing. This is just the beginning in less than one week. Just great!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wagner MMC220 moisture meter
I bought this meter two weeks ago. After playing with it my impressions are this is a very good meter in general with a very good range. Unlike model L609, this has an automatic shut off switch that shuts off after a couple of minutes of inactivity. The are only a few minor negatives in ergonomics, which are not a big deal, but could make the unit easier to use. For something costing $270, it should have a strap to prevent inadvertent damage from being dropped. Also at this price, it should have real button switches instead of cheap, and unreliable membrane switches.

The density correction is also a tad of a nuisance to use. After the unit has been turned on, if you want change the density setting, you have to press the species button once to reveal the current setting. Then if you want to change it, you'll have to hold that button again for a second or so in order to enter the density change mode. Then you press the button again or hold it to scroll or fast forward to the new density setting. It's not a problem at all if you only have to change the setting once in a while, but if you're in a store with lots of exotic woods and you have to change the setting with each species, it gets to be a little annoying. Maybe some kind of electronic rotary input dial or even a numeric keypad might work better.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
I don't know how I ever lived without it! Specific Gravity chart does not cover very many of the exotic, imported, and burl woods that I use. However, it's great for all other woods and you can make educated guesses on my difficult lumber. Every woodworker should have this unit. It's the best I've ever seen!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wood Butcher
I have been using this instrument for four months How did I ever do without this meter... I recently attended IWF-2002 in Atlanta. Wagner, etal were showing their various moisture meters at this show. I took some sawmill lumber to the show with me. I tried all of Wagner hand held moisture meters. I quickly discarded all of them except the MMC-210 and the MMC-220. I decided on the MMC-220 because of the capability to calibrate this meter for any species of wood using specific gravity. It is easy to calibrate and use and does not leave holes in the wood. I would recommend that anyone using saw mill lumber and air drying the same USE this meter. It is definitely the best of the hand held meters. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to see laser line outdoor
I have just bought it from Amazon.com a month ago. This is my first time to use a rotary laser. I have used 2' laser dot type level for several years with 360 degrees base. For the first time,I used a rotary laser for outdoor project that is very small size 11' x 12'patio, and 3 side walls already there without roof. There is 6' aluminum patio door on each wall. Even in the morning( Sun has not come to my site yet.), I could not see the laser line except only one corner. So I had to use the dector. I marked level. I checked again with dector. 1" difference. Then I had to check the level over and over. It was a big headache. I still think it caused by the aluminum frame of patio doors on 3 walls, because dector uses radio frequency. If it is so, instruction manual should include this kind of information. When I have used laser dot type level, I can see the dot far more than 50' outdoor whether under sun ot not. I am not sure whether it is normal for all rotary lasers that is hard to see the laser line outdoor even in the very small area, or it is too cheap comparing to other brands. ... However It works very good indoors. I would like to give 4 stars for indoors, and 2 stars for outdoor

5-0 out of 5 stars Remodeling
As a small remodeling contractor I frequently work alone. I need tools I can depend on to save me time and perform well. I bought the 7690-2 specifically for a ceiling job. The room is 15x40 in a very old house. Floor and ceiling are way out. The laser performed quite well. In a well lit room the beam was visible in rotation mode at 40'. When dithering the brightness increases considerably. Beam thickness is about 1/8" at 40'so I calculate from beam center. Construction and performance is very good, well worth the money. Controls are easy to use and understand. the remote control/sensor is very convenient and I have used it more than expected.
A self leveling rotating laser (in two planes) at this price and performance level earns it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tool that makes me money!
As a buidler that was schooled on the old David White L6-20 dumpy level, I am really juiced with the influx of hi-tech tools that are now on the market. To date I have purchased two of the RT-2's and have noticed a distinct improvement in the overall quality and speed of our work. The self-leveling feature is a must have for worry-free accuracy. The remote control saves me time and money. Whoever dreamed of the additional plumb line is my hero- it really helps with framing and has put an end to the complaints and call-backs from the finish guys about our walls being out of plumb! My only wish is that the rotating beam was a little brighter but the enhancement glasses and the line dither readily compensate. And the price- unbelievalbe.

5-0 out of 5 stars enthusiastic recommendation - exceeded expectations!
I bought this to build a 60' x 130' clear span arena. I have used just about every feature on the product, and it worked great (and SOLID) every step of the way. Used it to: line up post holes, plumb posts, calibrate level/height for beams/trusses. working alone, or with a small crew, this unit is a BIG time-saver. no problems with battery life, reliability, repeatable marks/measurements, outdoor job conditions. the sensor on the remote control was a HUGE help, and is dead on (within 1/8th inch) over 130' span. This was a good buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cautiously optomistic
I bought this model after the less expensive RT-7210 died after 10 months and some problems, kinda foolish I know but I was and am hoping this one is built better.I won't go through what it does or doesnt do, the literature covers that very well, my major concern was that it did exactly what they said it would do, not a small issue since if you have done any homework on these things you'd realize that the performance claims represent a lot of bang for the buck. I confess this is only day one on a 100' x 70' concrete form, but out of the box this thing came within 3/32" over 140' to a trusted ERP, which in my book is dead on,....surprised the heck out of me. In broad daylight, outside, I kind of miss my faint red dot of the other model ( but not chasing it), the target built into the remote works very well. Pretty impressive for the money..if if if if it continues to perform as well in the future. I will handle this thing like I did my old one, a fragile christmas tree bulb. I've taken the time to write this because these review threads have helped me in the past, they are a good idea as long as you don't have manufac. reps. sneaking comments in. ... Read more

Cabinet installation can be a bear, but this clamp set makes it more than bearable. The unique design is like another pair of hands that grip while you align and tighten the stiles, pre-drill and fasten, and the clamps stay put through the entire process. The drill guides and pilot holes ensure that the 1/8-inch bit (included) hits the mark time after time. We like the professional quality: lightweight but rugged aluminum claws and alignment plates, protective rubber pads that won’t mar your work, 1/2-inch diameter zinc-plated, cold-drawn steel screws with smooth Acme threads. The plastic handles even have grooves for a great grip. These clamps will work with stiles from 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide and up to an impressive 1-1/2 inches thick. If you are installing cabinets this is one tool you do not want to be without. Works well but you may need more than two if your cabinets are large or if fighting with a really uneven floor.

4-0 out of 5 stars great clamp but could be improved
These work well for hanging cabinets and make short work out of alignment. My only critisism is the pin (a rolled piece os steel that holds the two pieces of the clamp together at the screw) repeatedly came out of the hole and allows the clamp to separate. This has happened to both clamps and has been remedied by opening the cylinder with a nail set and redriving it back into the hole. They are always in my tool box and they are used heavily as I am a cabinet maker. If they fix the pin with a threaded hole and pin with a screw thread on the end I would have given it a 5+. I will buy another set in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cabinet Installers take Note!
Have you ever tried to install kitchen cabinets? How about by yourself? Uh huh. If you have then the brilliance of these clamps will be obvious. I wish I had invented them. You not only pull the cabinets together tight, but you are able to get the faces (stiles) even (flush).

The only other thing you'll need is a drill bit made for the pilot hole.

A must have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy on, not so easy off...
Bought a set of these because the concept looks great. They worked well to align the first two cabinets I installed, but one of the clamps would not come off! It felt like it was cross-threaded and would not open up. After nearly tearing the skin off the palms of my hands, I had to resort to a pipe wrench which opened the clamp at the expense of the threaded shaft, it fractured into two pieces. I would like to buy another set, but probably won't just out of principle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Framers Friend
This really is a great tool. To level or plumb walls, this is a must have item. Easy, quick and accurate, what a time saver. This is another well made product from Stabila, other than the cheap plastic end-caps that are prone to crack, a very solid item. Make sure to get the padded case, not only does it keep your new level safe, it will also hold your 4' and 2' levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars a carpenter's best friend
My husband is a carpenter and he wanted this level. Since he's gotten it, he's been like a kid who got exactly what he wanted for Christmas. He's already used it at work and can't say enough good things about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Stabila!
Wow, another cool new level from Stabila. These guys must have carpenters on staff because they always seem to come up with the greatest products for the professional carpenter. I have this level and it is fantastic. It is tight, even while extending it is not at all sloppy like the other extendable levels on the market. Like other Stabila levels it is extremely accurate. It is a little bit heavy, but the hand holes make it easy to handle. The plumb vial is always at eye level and there is a inch scale on both sides of the extended shaft. They did it again! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bil-Jax KT6627-02552-1 Contractor's Scaffolding
The Bil-Jaz KT6627-02552-1 scaffolding is great. I'm very impressed with how easy the two cross braces attach onto the pin assembly/lock mechanisms. My next purchase of the Bil Jax product line will be the levelers and another set of scaffolding.

Product Description

The PLS360E is a self-leveling, detectable laser kit including carrying case, wall bracket, detector and grade rod bracket. The PLS360E is the PLS360 "pulsed" packaged with a detector to pick up the laser signal when the line is not visible. This is not a rotating laser, it has no rotating parts. By simply setting the up the laser within 6% of level and pushing the "on" button it will show a 360 degree visible line accurate to 1/8 of an inch at 100 feet. Ideal for use indoors for suspended ceilings, cabinets finish trim and counter tops. When used outdoors you can push the "on" button twice to make it puse and detectable with the laser detector. At close distances you will still be able to see the line but you can also pick it up with the detector from 250 feet away. Set it up in the middle of your job site and get a 500 foot diameter. There is a 1/4" threaded hole in the bottom of the unit for use on the bracket included or a tripod. The detector has an adjustable volume setting and a removable attachment for clamping to grade rods. There are 2 screens for viewing the laser height one on each side of the detector. The benefit of having a viewing screen on each is that you can be standing behind the grade rod and still read the signal. This unit will run for 35 to 40 hours on 3 D cell batteries. This kit includes an adjustable bracket that will hang from a nail/screw or clamp to ceiling grid with a spring loaded clamping mechanism. The kit also includes the detector with clamp, a molded plastic carrying case and owners manual. ... Read more

Recycled wood is wonderful to work with, but you run the risk of damage each time you machine it. Old nails, screws, and fasteners will wreck expensive planer, jointer, and saw blades quicker than a wink, but the Lumber Wizard can keep that from ever happening in your shop again. A metal detector for your wood, The Lumber Wizard locates metal buried in wood up to 6 inches thick. In addition to the sound alert, you can plug an earphone into the jack or set the unit to vibrate instead. A smart designer engineered the handle with a little bend in it, so you won’t be dragging your hand along the wood surface, a small touch we appreciate. For about the cost of a good carbide blade, you’ll be saving yourself countless ruined bits and blades. And that makes the Lumber Wizard is a smart investment.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

Features

  • Nine-volt battery is required (battery not included)
  • Detects metal in all types of woods up to 6" thick--including particle board and solid woods
  • Features a low voltage vibrator, which alerts the user when metal is detected
  • Pinpoints exact location of metal objects
  • No calibrating, no measuring, no guessing

5-0 out of 5 stars The new model is fantastic. It saves my tail almost daily!
I bought the new Lumber Wizard III a couple of months ago and it has been the perfect detector. After owning the first version for a couple of years I've found the new version to be much better. it is stronger, very reliable and has held up to daily use. I own a restoration shop and use a lot of recycled wood. The old version was tempermental and sometimes needed tuning but the new Lumber Wizard III has been 100% reliable. I also bought one for my father in law and he too is very happy with the new version. From my point of view this is a tool only a fool would be without.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money if you have lots of wood to check
I upgraded to the lumber wizard after having really good success with the smaller (and cheaper) little wizard from the same company. This is similar to security wands at the airports, but more "woodworker" friendly (you don't have to scrape your knuckles to get close to the wood since the handle is raised - and its half the price of the others). The vibration feature is really nice to have when the workshop gets noisy. I had to fine tune it when I first got it, but haven't touched it since (nearly 3 months). It's super sensitive, but when you get it tuned right and move it slowly and thoroughly, I doubt anything metal would get past it. Much faster to use than the little wizard as well, since the scanner area is much bigger. Well worth it if blades and time are important to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I got one before I had to buy planer blades.
Easy to follow instructions. A little sensitive to tune in but once tuned ln I checked 30 to 40 ft. of 1X2 oak with no problem. This wood had three quarter inch long finish nails in it. I thought I found them all till I ran the Wizard over it. I like the long length and offset handle on wide boards so your knuckles dont scrape. Light weight and wide scan path make this product easy to use. Little price to pay for what it can save in nicked tooling. This is the updated Lumber Wizard III.

5-0 out of 5 stars They improved it with an upgrade
This is a revamp of a previous review. I wasn't sure whether to order one after reading the other reviews, and after visiting the Wizard web site. Well I broke down and ordered one, and I am glad that I did. I noticed that they eliminated the large adjusting knob on the face of the unit. The plastic form pack and instructions that it is shipped in still have the bulge, where the knob used to go, and the cardboard placard still has the instructions on how to use the missing knob. Before it had the large fine adjusting knob, and a recessed fine adjust screw what was used to get the large knob within adjusting range.
Adjusting is simple now. With the single recessed screw, you simply hold it up in the air and turn the screw until it starts to squeal, then back it off just enough for it to get quiet. Now you are at the maximum sensitive setting. It is intuitive and simple enough, that you don't mind, setting it, every time you use it.
Next I wanted to check the accuracy of the unit. I took an aluminum screw and parked it under a 2x4. When I passed it over the squeal rang out. Good there, then I put the screw under two 2x4s, and it didn't find it. Hey if it is buried 3" deep, I wouldn't normally need to be concerned about it. The instructions call for passing over both sides of the wood, so that would cover even a piece of metal inside of a 3" piece of wood. Then I went over to a piece of 3/4 oak, and put a small brass screw under it, it rang out. Then I put it under two 3/4" pieces of wood it rang out again. Under three it failed to notice it. So the unit is great for depths up to 1 1/2".
The other thing worth mentioning is that this is a rather large unit, with the last 7" containing the sensor area. Since the sensor runs along the length of the unit, as compared to across the face, you get much better results, when making a pass that brings the length of the piece of metal into the length of the sensor. So you want to be sure and pass the detector over the same area at right angles to one another.
Sorry for mentioning the obvious but the larger the piece of metal, the easier it is to detect.
Pertaining to the battery holder, I noticed that a reviewer was having trouble with that. I don't know if that was improved over the earlier unit, but the way it is now is great. It removes easily, and reinstalls easily as well. You simply push in the tab and it pops right out. When reinstalling it, you simply push it back in until is snaps in place. I expect to get a lifetime of dependable use out of it.
The manufacturer suggests that you remove the battery when it is not in use, so that is why some people were not getting a lot of use out of a single battery. With the ease of removing the battery, makes this a no hassle procedure. Simply put, you don't mind having to remove it.
In conclusion I have to say that I now highly recommend the Wizard Detector. It is easy to use, works dependably, even when testing it on different pieces of wood. Considering the price of buying an airport security level of detector, makes this Wizard a no brainer. I don't know how it worked before, but this new upgraded unit does the job I was hoping it would. Buy it you won't be sorry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Under Ideal Conditions
This tool can be made to work, and can save blades. But, it is far from perfect. Keep a test board with a known nail handy, and swipe it occasionally during use. Otherwise, the tool will drift off sensitivity, and you won't know it until your $$ carbide blade tells you... The tool is VERY sensitive to humidity, which is fine if you're in one of those spiffy shops that Fine Woodworking is always featuring, but if you're under a tin roof shed on a humid, rainy day, trying to turn salvaged heart pine siding into flooring, well... just forget it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars POOR FACTORY SERVICE
I HAVE AN OLDER MODEL SMART LEVEL AND IT QUIT WORKING. I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD "JUNK IT" AS IT WAS A SEALED UNIT AND COULDN'T BE WORKED ON. iT SEEMED TO BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AS IT WOULD COME ON AND THEN GO OFF LET IT SIT FOR SEVERAL HOURS WITH NO BATTERY AND PLUG IT IN AND IT WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF.

i ASKED FOR SOME TYPE OF REBATE ON THE NEWER MODEL AND WAS TOLD JUST GO BUY IT AND PAY FULL PRICE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Product for the Novice
I am a home owner and handyman. I needed something to help with chores around the house. Laying out walls and working in my garage. I have a standard 3' level that serves me very well. It came to me after reading the reviews on this level how nice it would be to add the sound so you don't have to stare at the bubble.
One review made mention of the end caps or lips on the level. I found a very small build up of paint on one end. Once the unit is put through the zero setup procedure, this build up should not come into play. A piece of sand paper on a flat work bench to "lap" the end would fix it. Agreed, this would "blemish" the looks of the paint, but it would make it true from one end to the other. I for one, could not send the tool back because of this.
I am impressed with the quality of the level. It's easy to zero in and accuate once set. I found that even the pitch was very accurate. I can see that if I was a builder by profession, this would be a great addition to my daily used tools.

Nice Product...

5-0 out of 5 stars Professionally done!
We have used the SmartTool for over 10 years in our analysis of ramps, curb ramps and walking surfaces for access to people with disabilities. This has been the 'tool of the century' for us to be able to accurately measure the slope and cross slope of an accessible route as it relates to the American's with Disabilities Act. Furthermore, with it's reasonable price, we can easily recommend it for purchase by contractors, architects, and facility managers to assist them in assuring the proper construction within the required design parameters of the ADAAG [The ADA Accessibility Guidelines]. Our hats off to Maclanburg Duncan for their product.

2-0 out of 5 stars Niced features, bad customer service
I was familiar with their older product. I used a friends a few times and liked it, so I bought this. They changed the design in in doing so, have made it of a cheaper quality. The old design was a brushed aluminum with grips that were very useful. The new design is flat bar type aluminum that is painted.

I put the level on my table saw top to calibate it. I noticed a gap under the level. The frame of the level was not flush. The reason is the end of the level had a small ridge on it causing the level not to sit flat.

I called their customer service and they were friendly. However, I would have to pay shipping to return it, and then pay a shipping and hadling fee to have it returned to me. I would think they should pay for their error, not me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for ADA survey professionals
The Macklanburg-Duncan 24" SmartTool is the fastest, most accurate way to measure slopes and cross slopes of ramps, walkways, and parking areas for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. One big improvement over the older SmartLevel instrument is that the calibration function is much simpler and much faster. Since it takes less than a minute, I can ensure maximum accuracy by recalibrating the SmartTool at the start of each survey job. Also, I particularly like the hold function which allows you to freeze a measurement, then pick up the tool to take a reading. If you do a lot of ADA survey work, this tool will pay for itself quickly. ... Read more

Don't confuse lightweight with light duty. If we had to assemble a basic tool kit for a homeowner, apartment dweller, or do-it-yourselfer, everything we'd choose is already right here. Now, just because they're smaller and easier to handle, don't assume they can't get the job done. The 7-ounce hammer will drive a nail just like a 20-ouncer, but without the wrist strain. We like the lifetime guarantee, always a plus in our book. Speaking of books, a great little guide comes with the kit and fits neatly in the case. 4-0 out of 5 stars Loved it, but...
I bought this 30 piece kit and loved it. It's got it all. The only thing is the levels and meassuring tape have magnets on them. The tools are magnetized too, so I have to be very careful not to rest them on anything electronic. But it's a great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Kit!
I bought this kit several weeks ago, and I am so happy with my purchase!! It has everything I need to get all of the things done that I have been meaning to do. I hung 2 pictures, and also new curtains in my living room. I was actually quite proud when I got the job done!
The how to book is great, and done in a fun way!
I am now motivated to try a bigger project.... will keep you posted!!

5-0 out of 5 stars my wife is now a "do-it-herselfer"
I recently purchased this wonderful Barbara K toolkit for my wife so she would stop nagging me to do things around the house. Now she does most of our home repairs without needing my assistance. It's a huge weight off my shoulders since we recently purchased a "fixer-upper" home. The tools are great quality and the spring-assisted pliers make using them very easy.
