Quiter than Blueair
I have severe asthma and have been VERY pleased with the 04163 Hamilton Beach Air Purifier. I'm not sure what planet the negative reveiwers are from but I investigated all the options regardless of price. I went by Sears and looked at the Kenmore. The reviewer who liked it must work for Sears because it isn't even in the same ballpark as the Hamilton Beach. I briefly bought and returned a BlueAir which cost twice as much and is supposed to be the quietest. Instead it has an irritating high pitched whine that oscillates and would be better utilized as a torture device. The Hamilton Beach, on the other hand, is not only quiet, but the white noise it makes is actually soporific. I prefer to sleep with it on and it runs 24/7. I use to have a constant problem with mold in my master bathroom, but the Ultraviolet light on the Hamilton Beach has kept it from returning. The other day I chased my golden retriever into the bedroom with ear cleaner and to my surprise the automatic fan smelled it, and dealt with it, turning the fan on automatically to a higher setting briefly. I couldn't even smell it myself. To describe it's air cleaing capability, I will just end by saying this, the reason I am on this site is I am getting ready to buy a second Hamilton Beach for my office.

Pretty Good, For Its Price and Intended Purpose
Haven't had it for very long, just a couple of months, but I like it. I had a Honeywell room unit that was okay, but I had no idea how well it was working. With the HB, the air sensor gives you some idea of how well it's working. When first hooked up, the HB showed that the Honeywell was doing a good job of cleaning. At first, I thought maybe I should have just stayed with the Honeywell. I had initially stayed away from using the UV light, after reading that it didn't do anything. Wrong. When I finally switched on the UV light, a lot of my nighttime nasal congestion disappeared. That feature, plus the sensor, makes this model a 4- rather than 3-star product. (Keep in mind tthat this is a one-room unit and not intended for people with severe allergies.)

Seems to have a small but noticeable effect on keeping dust down.

Whisper Quiet ... isn't. But it's no louder than the Honeywell. I also selected Super Saver shipping, saved some money, and got it in five business days. If this unit lasts another year without problems, I'll buy another for another room in my house.

Works great but noisy
I have been using this product for a year now with great results. It really does seem to clean the air and has improved my allergies. The filters are extremely easy to replace when necessary. My only complaint is that it is noisy, too noisy for me to use when I am sleeping.

It has been 3 months since I received the air purifier, one word, WOW.

For over 3 years, I have suffered from postnasal drip and congestion every morning due to minor dust allergies. I have noticed this has progressively gotten worse over this period. In an effort to remedy this situation, I was more diligent in dusting and cleaning my apartment and I visited my doctor a few times over the past few years. I was prescribed allergy pills and steroids in an effort to cure me, nothing worked.

I finally decided to buy an air purifier as general means of breathing cleaner air. I selected this one based on the reviews and comments others reported and was not disappointed. Literally, the first night I used the purifier, it cured my postnasal drip problem. The morning after, my nasal passage was clear and dry. I could breathe!!! Now every night before bed, I turn on my purifier and every morning now, I wake up clear and congestion free. I have even noticed when I am away from my purifier/apartment, the congestion returns.

Now to review the product itself... I must say the gadget-lover in me, opted for the UV light and digital readout of this particular model. Honestly, I probably could have done without the UV light and digital readout. There have been nights where I forgot to turn on the UV light and still woke up fine, perhaps it may be more effective in the winter when there are more germs flying around. The only semi-annoying thing is the device does not remember the UV setting when you turn it off. With the digital readout, I think I could have done without it. As I said, I love gadgets and features like this. However, it does work though. For example, when I open my window, it quickly determines the air is much dirtier and reacts accordingly. How smart!!!

People have noted that the purifier is very noisy. I think this is a purely subjective matter. I live in NYC on a ninth floor apartment off the East River on the FDR Drive. I am accustom to a certain amount of noise. I am subject to varying levels of car and wind noise 24/7. Concerning the purifier, I typically run it at low speed each night (I only run it at night). It is positioned at the foot of my bed. IMHO, using the lowest speed is no noisier than running an air conditioner at low speed. After a couple nights, it became white noise and is hardly noticeable to me now.

As far as size goes, I was a bit surprised how large it is but considering the size of the HEPA filter. It is not that bad in comparison. I am sure the larger size helps in better coverage of a large sized room.

The only negative I could come up with is the price (I paid about $140) but, given my success with the purifier, I cannot really claim this as a real fault. After 3 months, I am still on the original HEPA filter. The carbon filter I actually rinsed off the dust with some running water a couple times. It is a bit of a messy process but seems effective. I recently ran the built-in test on the filters and it passed. The replacement HEPA filter is a bit pricey; I think it should cost a lot less. They run about $40 to $50 each while the replacement carbon filters run three for $10.

Overall, I am very, very, very happy with my purchase. The money I paid was worth it. I can breathe!!! However, if can settle for the smaller size and/or without the digital readout, just get a lower-end model which sells for much less. The most important feature is the HEPA filter. ... Read more

Silent night
We live in Hawaii and like many people here suffer terribly from allergies, especially when the Kona winds are blowing from the big island, bringing the dreaded "vog" (volcano smog) with them. On top of that, my husband is allergic to our two beloved cats (the cats and I decided to keep him anyway) and I was allergic to his subsequent noisy snoring, so I purchased this item. I must admit I thought it might wind up just being another gadget lying around the house, but I am very pleased to report that it is an extremely useful device that has made our sleep significantly more peaceful and restful. We keep it on automatic most of the time; it's a tad noisy at night if it kicks into high gear, so occasionally we switch it onto whisper quiet before we sleep. I'm so glad we bought it, and I'd recommend it to anyone who suffers from allergies or has pets that they don't want to banish from the house. I also like the streamlined design of the Hamilton Beach model, the others looked too heavy and obtrusive.

Great purifier for the price!
I recently purchased this unit with hopes of reducing dust and other particulates in my bedroom. For reference, I live in Manhattan where the air quality is sometimes not the greatest.

Summary: Great unit for the price. Super ergonomics and clear displays make this unit a winner!

Positive aspects

1. Inexpensive price. Good value for the buck compared with many other filters on the market.

2. Good ergonomics. I actually liked the fact that you can monitor filter lifespan and air quality on a clear to read LCD. You can also see if the anti-germ UV bulb is working by seeing a glow out of a darkly tinted (for safety!) window on top.

3. Easy to set up! I had this puppy up and running in under 10 minutes. Pretty foolproof installation makes this one a keeper.

4. Great filtering technology. The unit can automatically adjust to the air quality in your room. Very nice! Also, I noticed a change in the air quality within 1 hour of operation.

5. Small form factor. After all, no one wants a huge unit in their bedroom!

Some minor complaints:

1. Power cord. I wish the power cord were a bit longer so that I could have greater placement flexability. Not a big deal.

2. UV bulb. Replacing the UV germicidal bulb is tad bit expensive. Again, not a big deal.

Great, but doesn't seem to last
This air cleaner has to be one of the coolest air cleaners out there. So far, I have not seen any in this price range that automatically adjust to the air quality. I like that it comes with a guage to let me know when I need to change the hepa filter. The gauge and a cleaner for the air sensor each have a special storage spot, so they don't get lost.

The one I have now is the second one I have bought, but the third one that I have had.

The first one worked for about 9 months, then the motor started to squeak. I called Hamilton Beach, and they asked me to send it in for warranty service. I got a brand new one back. I was about to have to change the filter in mine, so it worked out kinda nice. The new unit lasted about a year, then the motor just stopped. It was out of warranty by this point, so I went out and bought another.

Now I have had my third unit for about 6 months, and the motor died again, so I am going to have to call Hamilton Beach again, and probably ship it out.

I would think the motors should outlast the HEPA filter, but it hasn't been the case. I am a smoker, so it cycles from low to high quite often, but I wouldn't think that should be a problem.

When this filter works, it works great.... It helps keep my place from stinking from the smoke, and helps my allergies. The customer service has been great so far too. I just wish the unit would last.

Excellent Product
I bought this machine to help me with my allergies. It has worked tremendously and I highly recommend it. Running the purifier in the bedroom overnight has allowed me to sleep peacefully. The purifier is also excellent in the kitchen at removing any odors from cooking.
The machine is louder than I would like. On the lowest setting it can still be heard but is tolerable, and after a while you don't notice it. On the highest setting the noise is deafening and forces me to turn it to a lower setting. However, on the highest setting it is very fast and effective at cleaning the air in an entire room.

Does it all
This air filter is designed amazingly well. It can even be placed against a wall. The air enters through the front passing through a carbon and hepa filter, then the air exits through the top on its way back out into the room. Before the air exits, it passes by an ultraviolet light which kills mold spores, bacteria & viruses (a must for the au courant hypochondriac). It is very quiet & has a sensor which automatically & temporarily increases the fan speed to clean the excess pollution from the room. It even has a digital display to let you know it's working. This air purifier has everything you need and all for under $150. After owning it for two weeks, I bought a second one. Works, but ...
I bought two of these. I live near a heavy traffic street, and it gets filled with black particles every three of four days, and I believe my allergies and my son's are getting better.

The problems:

1. The power light is so bright that you do not need a night lamp to read.
2. Good thing is that the power light stopped working after two days, I had to put some black tape on the other unit to have a dark room for sleeping.
3. One of the two units I bought makes and extremely loud noise. I tried to change the blades from the other, but the problem seems to be in the unit and not the blades. Being outside the U.S., bad luck for me.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!
I fail to understand ANY of the positive reviews of this item since it so obviously doesn't work. I've been running it now for several months in a very dusty house (with 3 dogs, no less) and it hasn't removed enough dust to bother with-certainly no where near what the manufacture claims. And given the cost of the unit, hardly justifiable.
It's just another attempt of corporate America (or maybe China,I don't know) inventing any gimmick to relieve consumers of their hard-earned cash.
You're far better off buying one of the $20 fan-driven units that have been around for years. In spite of the drawbacks to these units, they do work.
If you're in the market for a tall, black, ugly, object that takes up space in your living room, by all means buy this!
So one more time: IT DOESN'T WORK! IT'S A PIECE-OF-CRAP! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Similar to Ionic Breeze, but not quite "silent" (as claimed)
I got this because it was about $50 cheaper than a refurb ionic breeze.It seemed to do something - there was some crud collected on the blades - but I didn't notice any difference in the smell of the room really.Worse is that it has a very faint buzzing sound even when the blades are completely clean.It said that it is supposed to be completely silent on the box.

I returned it for this reason and just received a refurb ionic breeze from Sharper Image today.Hopefully it will work better and will be silent (my friend has one and claims you can't hear a thing even if you put your ear on it, so hopefully that's true).

If the manufacturer reads these reviews: please fix the buzzing and you'll have a decent product.

Great Product
I just cleaned off the blades in my ionic pro that i bought a couple of weeks ago and they where completly caked and covered with dust.I have noticed a huge difference since I bought this product my allergies have been reduced considerably and their is no more dust or other allergins floating around the room.I have also recieved comments about how the air in my room seems fresher.This is a great product and for the price it can't be beat.If you suffer from allergies like I do you really can't put a price on any kind of relief.

Poor customer service
I bought two of the air purifiers even though I heard Oreck had terrible customer service.All I wanted was the serial number and they kept me on hold for 45 minutes and then I just gave up.I called again and held for 20 minutes and then gave up again.I tried sending an e-mail and still haven't heard a reply after a week.

Also, doesn't help if you have allergies...I still wake up sneezing every morning even though the unit is in our bedroom.I bought two and think it was a waste of money.

Please don't waste your money!
I wish we can give this 0 stars, but 1 was the lowest it can go.We bought 2 Oreck XL air cleaners a year ago direct and recently made our last payment.We feel compelled to share our experiences with your units. We are VERY disappointed with them! They are very ineffective if at all.Yes, there are some dust particles that were trapped in the fins, but they are no more than what would be on a $20 circular table fan ... no surprise since you have a rotating fan unit in the Oreck XL.One of our relatives has Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze. While that's probably ineffective as well based on what we've read, at least they can and are returning their's after 3 years for their money back, since Sharper Image has a LIFETIME satisfaction guarantee.Oreck only has a 90 day moneyback guarantee.We will be putting our 2 units on Ebay soon, with the hopes of recouping some of our money.Product marketing at its worst!

secret upkeep costs, bad customer service
our household bought 2 of these and turns out they do need replaceable filters.these are charcoal filters the company says you don't need but if they don't clean the air with out them then I think you need them. Lots of up keep cost, have to buy a special cell cleaner from them too that isn't cheap. these worked at first but after a year, I don't think they do anything.and the worst thing is we're still makeing payments.don't do it.

Not as effective as advertised.
I bought 4 of these units from a local Oreck store.We live in a new neighborhood with lots of construction going on.Dust is a big problem.We also have 2 dogs that seem to shed year round.Recently our HEPA filters needed changing of the filtering element so I thought we'd give the Oreck Signature serries a try.Based on one week of usage:

Construction quality is good with 3 exceptions.One, the swichtes are chrome plated plastic and wobbles.I'm sure with time, the chrome with rub out (like those old TV knobs).Two, the prefilters are real thin.I think if we wash it a few times, it will fall apart.Three, the collection plates have thin wires which runs the width.They look real fragile (the sales lady cringed and asked my not to touch them on the display models).You're not supposed to wipe the plates down like the Ionic Breezes.They recommend a specific foaming solution.

In actual use, the performance is truly disappointing. My wife and I notices that our allergy worsened after changing to these machines.The filtration efficiency is no where near that of a HEPA machine.I think that this is because of it's filtering principle.These machines' main filtration mechanism depends on the generation of a static charge on adjacent dust particles, which would cause it to stick to the metallic collection plates.This works well if air flow is really slow (as in the Ionic Breeze).However, in such a small machine, when you turn the fan on medium or high, air passes through the collection plates at such high velocity that it simply does not fall onto the collection plates.So these machines actually do a better filtering job at its silent setting.When turned on medium or high, the only thing that really does the filtering is the prefilter.Try it for yourself.This is counter intuitive, since most other filters do a better job at high flow rates.I guess if you leave it on siltent all the time, eventually the pollutants will get filtered.I think this is why other users find it effective.A nice thing about these machines is that you can turn the ionizer function on and off.Good thing since turning it on emits ozone, which may not be the best thing for your health.

In terms of consumables, there are the charcoal filters that needs replacement every 3 months or so, and the foam cleaner.The charcoal only filters odor, so if you odor is not a problem, you don't need to replace the charcoal.

In summary, these are reasonaby built machines that just is not as effective as a HEPA filter.They are better than nothing, and I think that's why most people think that they are effective.I don't dispute that they work, because they do.They simply work at an incredibly inefficient rate.If you value extreme quietness, and are willing to leave these on all the time, these may be right for you.Otherwise save your money and buy a HEPA machine.I returned all 4, the Oreck folks are great at taking things back.

Thermodynamics
Just a note for anyone shopping for a portable air conditioner:every air conditioner requires the hot air to be vented to the outside.You're removing heat from the air, and it has to go somewhere.

I assumed when i bought this product that it was portable in that I could put the unit anywhere in the room.I was surprised to find out that it had an exhaust tube 5 inches in diameter that is supposed to attach to a window or a hole in the wall.So my question is why is it called a portable if it always needs to be attached to a window or a hole in the wall?I guess it works fine, but so does a smaller window air conditioner and that wont set you back almost $500.Note, shipping was about $90.

After tiring of the look of window air conditioners and still lacking enthusiasm for whole-house unit, we settled on Sunpentown WA-1210E to cool west-facing living room.Long term plan was to replace all window units with portables, if this particular unit worked out.So far so good...

The unit looks goods.Semi-european design that, though not tiny, tucks away neatly during off-season.Controls are easy to use.And, so far, we have not had to empty condensate.(I assume we will never have to).

Cooling seems adequate for 400 sq foot room.Sound levels are reasonable.I would not call it noisy nor perfectly quiet.

I hate changing this filter
Not wanting to go through another winter with dry skin, I decided to look into purchasing a humidifier. After much research, I decided on the Hamilton Beach 05521 TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier. I have used this humidifier for a few months now and it's hard to tell if the humidifier has helped or not.

My skin is still dry, but I don't think it is AS dry as it would have been. The humidifier runs 24/7 on quiet.

The digital readout is very nice, I can't imagine one of these without a readout. The thing is though, it almost never raises the humidity above 35-40%. I've even let it run on high all day once in awhile, and all that does is use up all the water faster. Even on quiet, I have to fill the tank twice a day. And my wife and I are getting tired of filling up the tank all the time.

The one thing that I really hate about this unit is the filter. It gets really filthy very quickly, even after turning it over every time I fill the tank like the directions say. After about 3-4 weeks it starts smelling pretty bad and needs to be changed. At ten bucks a pop, I would expect the filters to last a lot longer.

If I would have been able to try this unit out for a month before purchasing it, I would have returned it and kept looking around for something else because of the filter. I don't know if all humidifiers go through filters this fast, surely they can't all be this bad, can they?

Other than the filter, it's not a bad unit. And I would definitely recommend getting a unit with a digital readout so you can see what the humidity level is before and after you use it.

Performance matches expectation
I bought this humidifier a month ago after much research. So far, it hasn't shown any mechanical trouble. The filter is holding up just fine after 4 weeks, despite daily use. Surely the quality of water in your area dictates how frequently you will need to change the filter. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you flip the filter over (to prolong it's life)when you refill the water. In my case, filter change maybe warranted no sooner than 2-3 months.

The large capacity of the water tank is good enough for 24 hour operation (on quiet setting). I use it all day night long on the low setting and it uses up about half the amount of water in the tank. At first the low setting may seem noisy especially if there is very little ambient noise around you (like when you can hear the wall clocks in your house ticking). But after a few minutes it sounds just like a dull whirring sound that is hardly objectionable. I use it in my bedroom at night and it doesn't disturb my sleep.

It is easy to see the level of water through the tinted tank. The water tank is easily removable when handled vertically. There is no leakage/spilling when you do so. There is a wide fill hole at the bottom of tank for refilling water. There are two problems though with refilling ...firstly the tank is too large to fit under the faucet in the kitchen sink, so you need a jug or hose to fill it up or use the faucet in the bathtub...secondly, the cap on the fill hole is pretty tight (the upside is that it is spill-proof) so I wouldn't recommend the unit for feeble people.

The other part of the unit, housing the motor and fan, comes off easily too. I do wish it had a latch, because you need to be careful not to knock it off when removing the water tank. When the water tank is replaced on the base tray, some water from the container fills up the tray, making a gurgling sound. It makes the same tiny gurgling sound periodically during operation too. This water in the tray is taken up gradually by the filter (which sits under the motorized fan), to generate the humidity when the fan is on.

The digital panel is easy to read. I do not however agree with the humidistat's reading. I have another humidistat in the room that I compare the reading to. The humidifier's reading is always lower, usually by 8 to 10 percent. Setting the desired level of humidity is simple although it can be done only in 5 percent increments. The unit shuts of automatically when the desired hunidity level is reached.

The base is easy to lift if the unit needs to be moved. Of course it is much more convenient to do so after removing the heavy water tank. As long as care is taken not to slant the base tray, there is no leakage or spill.

One point to consider if you are paying heating bills in the winter is that, since this IS a cool-mist himidifier, it will make the room cooler. So you may need to turn up the heat in the room a notch.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the unit's performance and recommend it to any able-bodied adult considering a cool-mist humidifier. To sum up, here are the PROS and CONS:

CONS:
1. Water tank is too large to fit under kitchen faucet
2. Cap on fill hole is tight. Some strength required to turn it
3. Humidistat not accurate
4. Motor unit is not securely latched to base tray to prevent accidentally knocking it off when removing water tank.

PROS:
1. Very good performance
2. Low operating sound on quiet setting
3. No leakage or spilling when handled correctly
4. Portable

Good product but needs some improvements
I have had this humidifier for about two months now and have found the following:

PROS:
1.This humidifier works well for me. I keep it in my bedroom and only use it at night and I like the white noise that the quiet setting gives off.
2. It does a fair job.
3. It has a digital readout (very nice feature).
4. It has a large water tank.
5. It is easy to use.
6. I have not had any mechanical problems with it.

CONS:
1. The filters have to be replaced about once a week, otherwise they get moldy and start to smell (and who wants to breathe in mold?)
2. The filters are WAY too expensive. Amazon sells them for seven bucks and this is the cheapest I have found. This is a lot of money to shell out every week.
3. Filters are hard to find. Not many places carry them.
4. The cap on the water tank is VERY hard to open. It takes forever to get it off.

Bottom line, I would not purchase this humidifier again simply because I hate shelling out 28 bucks every month for filters. Even though the cap is hard to get off, it isn't impossible and its something I can live with. Maybe HB will come out with a filter that can be reused by putting it through the dishwasher or something, but until then I would not recommend purchasing this humidifier unless you have a lot of money to put into buying filters. Even though it works well, it just isn't worth it.

Poor Design
Out of the box it looked nice but my happiness soon faded. I set it up just like the manual says. When I plugged it in and turned it on nothing happened. I noticed the fan was twitching a little bit so I turned it to "HI". The fan started moving a little and then finally worked it's way up to speed after a few seconds. I figured oh well the thing is new so it was just stuck from being new. It worked ok for a while and then I went out of the house for a couple hours. I got back and what looked like the entire contents of the reservoir had spilled onto my brand new Pergo flooring and expensive raw maple wall trim!!! I now have water under my floor, soaked through my trim and soaked under the wall and into the next room!!! I took it apart looked it over and gave it another try (on a towel in a less new room). Once again it worked well but this time I checked on it every 10 minutes. Once it was about 2/3 empty for some reason it decided to simply empty itself onto whatever it was sitting... PIECE OF CRAP!!! DO NOT BUY!!!

Really Impressed!
I have tried many models and I'm satisfied I got the best cool-mist fan unit available. The unit comes in 4 pieces; the large fan unit section that contains the controls, the translucent 3-gallon water container, the bottom tray that both of the previously-mentioned pieces slide upright into and a hidden water reservoir tray inside the bottom tray that's not visible from the product photograph.

As for the main unit, the humidistat works very well. Although I can't comment on someone else's concern about the humidistat not being accurate, in my experience it works very well. When I ratchet it up to a high humidity level, I get lots of moist air. After you change the setting by pressing either the UP or DOWN humidity buttons to increment the humidity level in 5% increments, the display flashes for 3 seconds after which the unit responds (either turns on or off) based on the new setting. It's quick and easy.

In addition to the UP humidity button and DOWN humidity buttons, there's a 4-point switch for OFF/QUIET/MEDIUM/HIGH. The HIGH setting is really good for humidifying multiple rooms and blasts quite a strong swirl of moisture into any room in no time at all. The QUIET setting is remarkably quiet. Although no cool mist-based fan can be SILENT, I am impressed with just how quiet this lowest setting is. I was fine with it right away, and although my wife was cautious, she took to it by the morning and has enjoyed it ever since. For hypersensitive people (like my mom) where any noise would be too much noise, I'm afraid NO cool-mist system will be sufficient. I sleep with the unit on the floor in the same room I am in, slightly below the level of our bed, and a mere 10 feet away and am very pleased with the quiet hum of the lowest setting. Underneath the fan unit resides the filter which is easy to replace and sits almost too easily into a small molded, shaped guide in the bottom tray. New filters are flattened for shipping and need to be reshaped into a cylinder before replacing them - and filters seem to last longer than I expected at 1 filter every 5-6 weeks - even after which they do not look gross, moldy or dirty.

The water container is a smart design. The fill hole is at the bottom of the 3-gallon jug, but seals tightly by way of an integrated plunger built into the wide screw-release fill cap. I haven't had ANY problems with spilling, leakage or difficulty opening the fill cap as at least one other reviewer has mentioned. Since the container faces into a humid environment, it's worthwhile to shake the container once or twice before you carry it across the room to shake any droplets of humidity away. Refills are every two days for me - but we only use this in the evening and sleeping hours, so constant usage would likely require daily refills.

Every once in while, you may hear a slight gurgle as air bubbles float up from the bottom of the container while the humidifier is in use, but this also is hardly noticeable - especially since it is usually quieter than the fan itself on the lowest setting - and flat up impossible to hear if the fan is set to medium or high. This occasional gurgling of air bubbles is infrequent and no distraction at all. Finally, the 3-gallon container is very easy to fill, but because of its depth, you will need to have either a reasonably deep basin kitchen or utility sink or fill the jug up in a bathtub. Either way, 3 gallons of water is easy to heft for an adult, but may be difficult for an elderly parent or friend (consider a smaller capacity unit if this is the case). Carrying is an easy one-handed operation thanks to the white handle built into the top of the jug itself.

The 3 non-motorized plastic pieces can be placed in a dishwasher, but you will need a dishwasher with a fairly deep main section in order for the 3-gallon jug to fit. Consider removing the upper rack (if possible) for smaller dishwashers. If all else fails, the mouth of the jug is fairly wide (5" across), so a petite hand, wrist and arm could reach inside to scrub the unit if that was ever needed (it doesn't seem to get dirty, moldy or gross in the time I've used the unit). For the one piece that cannot be put into the dishwasher, the fan unit is remarkably open with a great deal of free space for cleaning. I have never seen a unit as easy and accessible as this one. Usually I simply throw out humidifiers after a season or two since disassembling them enough to clear every nook and cranny proves not worth the effort. This is the first and only unit where that has not been a problem.

With as many great things I have to say about this unit, I have one exceptionally minor complaint: the two largest units (the water jug and the fan unit) slide too easily away from the base. This is due to the shallow crevice they sit in and the lack of a clip, latch or groove that would otherwise 'lock' the two units into place. This requires the user to slide the jug straight up when removing it for refills - otherwise, you run the risk of knocking the fan unit over and onto the floor. The up-side is that - without a lock or latch to secure these two pieces more tightly, lifting the jug for refills is a one-handed operation.

Great Product
This heater is excellent and the perfect fit, for a certain set of requirements.

If you have electricity, use an electric heater. Don't bother with the hassel of propane. The cost isn't too different and the hassel factor is much higher than electricity.

I also don't recommend using the small canisters. That's an inconvinient way to go as well.

BUT. If you don't have power and need a cheap, safe heat source that you can run while you sleep, this is the best one made. Buy the 12' hose, place a 20lb propane tank outside, and run this heater all night with just a small crack in a window or door (just in case!). You will get > 100 hours of heat out of a tank of propane! Less than a buck to run it all night.

Highly recommended under the right circumstances.

Carbon monoxide and propane
I don't (yet) have this heater but it is on my wish list.

I'm posting this merely to point out the inaccuracies and potentially DANGEROUS information in the poster who states that propane does not produce CO (Carbon Monoxide). Visit this site and you'll get plenty of information about this: http://www.carbonmonoxidedeaths.com .

Like all fuels, propane gas requires oxygen to burn completely. Appliance malfunctions, vent system blockage and improper installation will reduce the oxygen supply. When this happens, the fuel will not burn properly, releasing CO into the room, and long term exposure can lead to CO poisoning.

A bigger problem here is that in an enclosed area, the propane heater can consume oxygen. In an oxygen-starved room, the propane will continue to burn, and WILL produce carbon monoxide. This manufacturer was smart enough to include an oxygen sensor to avoid this dangerous situation. In fact, this manufacturer is a FOUNDING MEMBER of a Coalition for Portable Radiant Heater Safety. You will find very few portable heaters that are rated for indoor use today. This is one of them and you should be able to use this safely.

you people are missing the boat on safety!
the main byproducts of propane combustion are carbon DIoxide and water...not carbon MONoxide. You will expire long before your carbon monoxide detector sounds. It's not what this unit produces, it's what it consumes...oxygen. a little ventilation is all that's required to safely operate this unit, and reduce condensation.
Personally I would never use a radiant heater while sleeping, especially in a tent! Radiant heaters heat THINGS, not AIR,if one of those things being exposed to this radiant energy is highly flammable you'll have a serious problem. I have personal knowledge of a radiant heater (albeit a larger AC model) igniting a stack of paper over 3ft away!
a safer, lower cost alternative might be a catalytic heater like the coleman procat... though it has a much lower btu output, it's heating air...not emitting radiant energy. In a large workshop...radiant...in a tent or the like...catalytic.

Save Your Money
I purchased this heater and it was a problem from day one. Out of about one hundred attempts to light, it has only worked three times! The pilot light ignites without problem, but it refuses to work beyond this point. Two out of the three times it worked, it went out when I tried to turn the control from high to low. I have since purchased three butane heaters that work flawlessly. I would not recommend this unit.

Can not handle wind or breeze
I bought this with the hope of using it at our kids outdoor sporting events, but, when ever there was a breeze, the heater would shut off. A Thirsty Beast
I can't claim much previous experience with dehumidifiers, but this one did the job, and did it well. I used this thirsty beast to help suck up the excess water of a truly gross basement flood, and it made a big difference in the clean-up and with the general air quality. The set-up was simple, the 30-pint container was substantial, and there were no mechanical failures of any kind, in spite of the fact that I ran the dehumidifier pretty much non-stop.

Good Investment- Does the job WELL....
I spent some time searching around, with my criteria being of course cost-effectiveness, low noise, and mostly the ability to clean the air effectively. I was initially under the impression that the replacement filters would save me a lot *(over previously systems I had owned), but that was not the most important selling point. I am now shopping for filters, and realizing that it is a two-step process... getting both the carbon screen and the entire filter. While I am shopping around for the best deal, I am planning to meanwhile just use the vacumn to prolong the life of the existing carbon screen and filter.... seems to be ok to do. I highly recommend this product.... GREAT UNIT !

Hamilton Beach TrueAir HEPA Air Cleaner & Filter
After owning several more expensive HEPA filters over the last 10 years, I have been very impressed with the Hamilton Beach TrueAir Air Cleaner. I throughly researched this unit before purchasing and have been very pleased with its capabilities. It's quiet, the filters are easy to change and find, and its automatic function with the UV light works as expected. It was well worth the investment.

I reviewed several air purifiers before purchasing the Hamilton Beach 04160 with UV light unit. With all the misleading information on HEPA fitlers, ionic and electrostatic units on the market it can be hard to find exactly what you need. My son has asthma and we all have air borne allergies. Since installation of the unit, in the family room and bed room, the level of dust has decreased and my son has not had an asthmatic attack either. All air purifiers make noise. Not a good choice
The first unit I received, had obvious outward dents in a side panel, as if it had been dropped on it's side, and the internals of the unit pushed out from the inside. The unit was also very noisy. I could watch the humidity gauge drop very quickly, then the unit would shut down (after 2 minutes), and then start back up in 2-3 minutes as the guage went back up. I reported my problems to Amazon, and they overnighted a new unit to me. The second unit arrived, in a better, stronger box, (but still with no handle cutouts which would make carrying so much easier). This unit also had outward dents (in both side panels). I plugged it in, and could hear the compressor start up, but the fan would not start, in either of the 2 speeds. It also was noisy, but not as bad as the first one I received. I commend Amazon, for handling my returns expeditiously, but this dehimidifier gets less than 1 star from me. Perhaps if the box design had handle cutouts, it would prevent the box from being dropped, and help stop the internal damage. I eventually bought a different brand, from a local store, and it is quiet, no dings, and is working well.

DDE40E 40 Pint unit does not perform as intended!
The base problem with this unit is the sensor(s) which causes the unit to cycle on and off....I put an accurate humidistat next to the unit and as it started it's downward reading to below 50% RH, the humidistat stayed steady and dropped only about 1% after 1 hour and 30 minutes. The face of the unit was pulled and the sensor was checked....It is doubtful that this unit will ever perform as it's description indicates...There are other units on the market (check out the Edison brand-Canadian made) that perform much much better in higher volumes...The Edison unit is priced from $100. to $139.95. I finally bought two (2) from Ace Hardware in my town and both operate flawlessly! Cost of operation is less than $5.00 per month in electric, has taken a big load off my two central units and the two units paid for themselves in less than 3 mos! If you can control your RH, you can set your thermostat higher, say 75 or 76 and your home will feel like 72% without the chill, the high electric rates, etc. I leave in the SE in a high humidity community and dehumidifiers are the way to go. Unfortunately, the bigger the unit, the higher the operating costs and it is dubious as to the effectiveness of larger versus better operating. Whole house dehumidifiers are not very effective in a big home or a home with very high ceilings. It's cubic feet of air moving NOT output that controls how effective a unit is....I cannot recommend this unit to anyone as it will likely end up in the next garage sale for $5.00 to some unsuspecting yard sale buyer.....BTW, I am an engineer and not affiliated with any of these makers. ironic twist
I bought this dehumidifier a couple weeks ago on the basis of the good reviews... looks like the people who reviewed the product in August, after my purchase, liked it a lot less than those who reviewed it before.

I put the dehumidifier in my basement and regardless of the level I set it at, it seemed to fill up its tank about once every 36 hours.The basement didn't really feel much different but I guess the machine was sucking a lot of water out of the air.It was annoying to have to respond to the 'tank is full' beeping almost every day, but I figured it was doing its job.

A couple days ago, I realized that it hadn't beeped at me to empty the tank for over a day, so I went to check on it.The tank was completely full, overflowing, the dehumidifier was still running, and a 4x4 area of my brand new carpet was soaked. The sensor that shuts the dehumidifier off when the tank is full didn't work, so I got no beeps, no shutoff, and a lot of water on the carpet.

This dehumidifier did more damage to the carpet than the humidity ever did. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet (return it, exchange it, pound it to smithereens...), but I sure won't take the risk of turning it on again.

Not worth the headache
I've ordered this item twice already.The first shipment was refused because the product had been clearly damaged in shipping. The second time around I received the product at my work address and that helped expediate the shipment to arrive relatively unharmed...so I thought.I've had the unit on over 24 hours now and there's still no water being extracted from the air and into the water tank.I'm in the process of returning the product for another replacement but as I write this review I'm reconsidering just returning the product completely and buying a demudifier from a Sears or something.It's already the second week in August!!!At this pace I'll have a good working product in October maybe?

Works ok, but don't trust its sensors
When you first turn the unit on you are amazed at how well it seemsto be working... the sensor shows it going from 80% humiditiy to 40% humidity (in a large basement) in just a couple of minutes.Once the unit reaches its set humidity level, it cycles off.As soon as the compressor is off you can watch the humidity level begin to rise again, as quickly as it fell.Within minutes, it gets back up to a high level and turns itself back on.And then this process repeats.I contacted the company, and the rep I spoke to said it sounds like the unit was damaged, so I returned it, and got another.The second one did the same thing.Not knowing what else to do, I let it run for aday, and whatda' know, by the end of the day the collecting tank was full of water.
If you have one of these, just set the desired level really low, and get an external humidity meter.Also, as others have commented, the packaging is terrible. ... Read more
