It's just a fan
I don't know, maybe it's just me, but the other reviews on this item made it sound like this fan was some miraculous new advance in electric fan technology. I bought it, and I'm satisfied with my purchase, but so far it hasn't radically changed my life and I'm not in any hurry to tell all my friends to go out and buy 10 of them. It's a fan. You turn it on, it blows air. It doesn't seem to blow air any further than any other fan I've had. It works fine in my average-sized bedroom. It is pretty quiet and is small, two features I like. I think I'd like it a little more if it had the ability to oscillate back and forth.

Great Power in a Small Package
You cannot find a more powerfull fan in such a small package. It has stepless speed control. At the highest speed it blasts as much air as a massive box fan on high except it does it in a higher velocity compact stream of air. It is amazing how this stream stays together over a long distance without much divergance. This meant I could use it to channel air directly into my bedroom 25 feet and two rooms away from my single window unit airconditioner. It is somewhat noisy at its highest speed because of that massive volume of air being moved. At its lowest speed it gives a nice breeze and is very quiet.

All Hail the Tiny Tornado!
This little "air circulator" is to fans what the Bose Wave Radio is to stereo systems: you simply can't believe the amount of output coming from such a compact source. It seems to transcend physical reality. As a drummer in a doo wop band, I have used one of these "Tiny Tornados" onstage for a number of years now, and nothing else comes close when it comes to blowing a strong, quiet stream of air to keep me cool. Other musicians interested in using the fan for this purpose will be pleased to hear that the little Vornado has NEVER given off any hum or unwanted electrical noises that showed up in a sound system, despite the constant suspicions of band members and sound technicians alike. I don't know what to make of the one other customer who was disappointed by this fan, unless he accidentally bought an inferior copycat version -- there are some around -- made by another company. Simply the best little fan in the world!

This is a keeper, but just one caveat...
I bought this fan because I wanted something to run during the night at low speed that would not make the noise my hardy old box fan does.

And it is perfect for that purpose, creating just the right breeze that will keep you cool, without disturbing.

So I agree with everything else that has been written about this.

I will just say that there is one thing this little guy cannot do, which is draw in cool air from outside when you place it at the window. Nothing beats your $10 box fan in that.

I will never forget the summer of 1986, wife pregnant and the central air zonked out. I ran to the nearest large store to grab a fan and actually i was going to grab any fan. I was walking down the fan isle when i noticed 3 to 4 people grouped in front of this small looking yet powerful fan. They were laughing and feeling good. It obviously made everyone cooler. I noted the blades were quite different allowing them to circulate air at a awsome speed. The output shocked and amazed me. very unhappy
I bought this to reduce the amount of dust and cat hair floating in the air. What a waste of money! It did absolutly nothing (even in our small apartment!). I am dusting furniture just as much as I was before I bought this product and there is still cat hair floating around . My baby is due in June, and I want her to breath clean air, so I am planning on getting an Ionic breeze purifier (which doesn't need filters) from the sharper image (sorry Amazon). I have heard very good things about it.

Love it!
I must admit that at I debated for a long time whether or not to buy this product because it was a little expensive, but so far it has been worth every penny! I bought it to help with allergies and pet odor, and it has definately proven itself! I knew I wanted one with a HEPA filter because those are the most efficient at filtering out small particles in the air. I run it on the lowest setting in my bedroom at night, and when I wake up in the morning I don't suffer from morning allergies like I did before purchasing this air purifier. It used to be I'd wake up with my eyes watering and my nose running like crazy, even though I take daily allergy medication. It's great to not have to suffer through the mornings! Also, I have pet ferrets which are all kept in one room, and as you can imagine it can have a pretty strong pet odor. I run the air purifier on the medium setting in the room for an hour or so, and when I go back in there it smells fresh and clean! I was in awe. Since it covers 180 sq. ft. I can place it in an open centralized location in my house and it keeps the dust out and the air fresh. I like the three setting controls which allow you to pick how much air you want going through the filter, and I like how portable it is - not too heavy to move around. The lowest setting is whisper quiet, I barely notice it's on at night unless I really listen for it. The higher settings just sound like a fan is running in the room, so they aren't too loud either. great machines but recommend the UVG ones higher
I have several of the Sharper Images Ionic machines and love them. I got this model first, but recommend the Two Sharper Image Ionic Breeze GP Silent Air Purifiers with UVG lights as a better investment.

I have had several air machines designs to clean the air in the house to cut down on all sorts of indoor pollution. But living in a very old house you have a lot of dust, so most have the filter run out in a matter of 6 to 8 months. If you have any hepa filter types you know this is the same situation as the printers for your computers. You get the printer for next to nothing, but the ink cartridges cost and arm and a leg! Same with hepa filters. IF you can find them. Why is it when you need one, you can never find the one you want?

I now have a total of 5 of these machines in my house and I could not live without them! It's so amazing. You don't hear a noisy fan going like you do with the other filtering machines. They are totally silent. But ever five foot away, you feel the gentle breeze, smell the beautiful air. I notice the cats really love them. They will get in the path of these breeze and just sit there inhaling the lovely smelling air. They have UV lights to help kill germs. I noticed this year, we got through with no flu (first time in 7 years!). No colds.

Now that allergy season is hitting, they are a must. They are a snap to clean. Just take the core out, wipe down and get rid of the nasty uglies that you would have been breathing.

I did have problems with the machines malfunctioning. But Sharper Image quickly replaced them with new ones, they even paid for the return postage. Since replacement, I have had no further problems. I do recommend following directions on maintenance. If have to turn them up and down several times after cleaning. If you don't do this you could end up with problems, but they come with a video explaining everything, so if you don't follow instructions you only have yourself to blame.

Works well for me!
Living in a dusty old dorm room, I decided to get an ionic breeze (2).

This unit picks up a LOT of dust. Cleaning it takes maybe 2 minutes tops. To whomever is cleaning the plastic strips on the bottom, I really don't see the need to "clean" them to the point where they fall off. They don't pick up ANY DUST, so there is NO REASON to be cleaning them so vigorously (:rollseyes:). I would much rather breathe in a trace amount of ozone than breathe in all the dust that was in the room.

We have another one sitting in the kitchen at home, and it is great at eliminating food odors (new home, tightly insulated, closed dual pane windows, etc). After a few hours, we can't tell that food was previously cooked. Before, the smell would linger on for several hours.

A quick note on ozone. Taken from www . chemfinder . com, Ozone is detectable at 0.01 to 0.04 ppm; sharp disagreeable odor at 1 ppm. The current OSHA Standard for OZONE is 0.1 parts per million (ppm) of Air over a 8 hour work shift.

I have NEVER smelled a sharp odor, but have only smelled it slightly when the unit was on HIGH in a small (maybe 10ft x 10ft) room. In a large room, or having the unit turned on to a lower setting in a smaller room, I have NEVER smelled ozone. So, the ionic breeze must put out less than 0.01 - 0.04ppm when used properly. According to standards, this is a very SAFE amount of ozone. Science may prove in the future that a continuous low amount is dangerous, but even so, it is well known that ozone is highly unstable and will break down in about 20 minutes.

Until I actually read of a governmental warning or something of that nature, I will continue to use the Ionic breeze. 4 stars because almost nothing is perfect (!!)

Not Worth the Trouble
I own THREE of these Quadras. These things are more trouble than they are worth!

Although they clean the air, they require VERY frequent and VERY thorough cleaning (NOT because my air is any dirtier that yours either).

Cleaning is required almost weekly, never any longer than 2 weeks, and to clean them thoroughly is VERY DIFFICULT. If they are not cleaned regularly, they become very noisy, making highly irritating static and crackling sounds.

To clean them, I remove the grids, take the remaining cases/enclosures outside, and blow them out thoroughly with compressed air. Then I turn them upside down a few times per the instructions, and then I blow them out some more. And then I wash and dry the grid as the instructions call for. What a PAIN!

Also these things do not come back on automatically after a power failure.

I am sorry I bought them, especially considering how expensive they are.

Not worth it!
I bought the Ionic Breeze GP ($500). My partner and I were encountering dust allergies in a older home we rent. After a few days of using the IB I couldnt take the smell any longer. I have heard people equate this smell to rain but perhaps living in Florida I havent encountered rain that smells like burnt plastic. Secondly, I havent noticed a difference in my allergies. For this price I will buy a standard HEPA filter and spend the extra money on filters that work.

More like 2.5 stars.

This air purifier is OK, but considering the price as compared to other types of purifiers, it ought to be fantastically special. Originally we used it in a rec room right next to the kitchen. Noticeably less dust collected on the TV screen, and cooking smells disappeared rapidly. On two occasions when smoke filled that end of the house (there are 2 extremely absent-minded people living here, who sometimes forget they're cooking something, and who seem to consider the smoke alarm as a cooking timer), there was just too much in the air for the poor Ionic Breeze to really help. Anyway, after 8 months the IB started to hiss, crackle and pop, although it was cleaned weekly, so it got shut off, never to be used in the rec room again. It was moved into a bedroom where the dog sleeps, and it has done wonders for removing doggy smell. It's hissing and crackling louder than ever, despite all efforts to clean both the wires inside the unit, and the collection plates. But it is still dealing with odors well, so...I'm willing to keep it until I decide to get something else.

I knew that the noises on the IB would show up at some point (just not so early), because a good friend had the same experience with his unit. Although he had warned me, I bought one anyway, thinking "Well, I'm not a slob like you and I'll actually clean mine so I won't have the same problem." How wrong I was.

Sometimes there's a noticeable bleachy smell, but that's a great improvement over noticeable doggy smell.

I only gave it 2.5 stars because although it works (over 1.5 yr now) it's still too expensive. Not a good value. ... Read more

Medical centres choice!
I pretty much bought this Plasma Purifier without hesitation for my new born baby nephew in Hong Kong, after hearing that some medical centres there have been using it as well. With the bad air pollution there and caring about the air he's going to be breathing in, I feel there is no better choice.

I personally have the much advertised Ionic breeze, and don't think it realy helps that much, although I still keep it on. Don't worry about changing the filter either, 5years is a very long time and putting one in is a breeze.

Whisper Quiet HEPA Filtered Air Cleaner
As someone who is highly allergic to cigarette smoke and other air pollutants and irritants, I purchased a round Honeywell HEPA air filter when it first came on the market several years ago. It still works well in the living room, but it is quite noisy even on its lowest setting.

Recently, I decided to purchase another air cleaner with a HEPA filter for my bedroom because I had contacted bacterial pneumonia last year and wanted to make sure I did not get it again.

This air cleaner really works! This winter I have not had a cold or flu. Also, this Honeywell Air Cleaner with HEPA filter is whisper soft, and I have had no problem sleeping when it is running on the low and medium settings. I leave it on all the time, and I've found that it works best when the door is closed.

It has a convenient handle on the top, so I can move it to another room quite easily. The prefilters last about 3-6 months, (and they can be vacuumed if you have pets who shed). I change my HEPA filter every year, but you can wait 3 years to do so. These filters are easy to change.

Highly recommended for anyone who has pets, who lives with or entertains people who smoke, and who is allergic to dust, molds, or pollens.

Accept no Substitutes
I'm allergic to just about everything. Let's put it this way, when I got my tests back from the Allergist I *wasn't* allergic to feathers. That was it, everything else came back positive. I'm allergic to dust, mold, grass, trees, pet dander, ... the list could go on, but I think you get the point.

I bought this product for use in the master bedroom ( roughly 17' x 20' in size), to clean out the allergens. Since it was going in the bedroom, I was very concerned about the noise. This has not been an issue. It runs continuously on the low setting and it really is quite. Most people don't even notice it.

Again, running continuously on the low setting, I've found the pre-filters need changing about every 2 to 3 months and the HEPA filter is just now indicating it needs changing after about 15 months. I think this seems a reasonable amount of time for the filters to last.

Changing the filters, however, is my one and only complaint. Did I mention I was allergic to dust? Opening the cleaner to change filters -- especially changing the pre-filter -- is not easy to do without getting dust all over yourself and in the air. Even though I change the filters as soon as the light indicates, there is a lot of dust not firmly trapped in the filter. When you remove the velcro straps holding the pre-filter in place, the dust gets airborne and gets on you..

That being said, it does seem to have made my bedroom a much more pleasant place to live. I've noticed that during the spring and fall pollen seasons that I'm sleeping better at night. I attribute that to the good job the air filter is doing. There may be cheaper air cleaners on the market, but why settle for a substitute? After a year of using it, I'm convinced it was worth every cent I paid for it.

Horrible product - stay away!!
This unit only worked for about 6 weeks, then wouldn't turn on anymore. I'm very disappointed - I paid near two hundred and was unable to return it...what a complete waste!! I would have given no stars if I could have!

Don't buy this model. Honeywell screwed up!
I bought this air cleaner in March of 03 and was pleased with the thing until it just stopped working in January 04. There was no indication that anything was amiss, I was changing the pre-filters on the recommended schedule and then one morning nothing; no lights, no sound, no activity. Am sending it back to Honeywell (on my nickel according to their warranty policy). We will see how long the replacement lasts. I have read several reviews here that don't give me much hope. Amazon was nice, said I needed to contact Honeywell directly but suggested I post a review.

This thing is terrific!
I have a 100 year old house - by that I mean I have lots and lots of dust problems. I also have 3 cats, 3 hamsters and a guinea pig (as well as fish!) And I smoke, way too much. I got this air cleaner a week ago and the setup was terribly simple.

I leave it on the low setting because I found medium and high to be too loud, but low is working just fine in my 17x16 open room. (There's an open stairwell in the room.) This thing sucks my smoke towards it from 10 feet away, and I dusted the day I got it and haven't had to since, which is truly amazing for my house. I'm breathing better as well!

I highly recommend this product to everyone. In fact, I'm going to buy a couple of smaller Honeywell's for my bedroom and bathroom (cat litterbox in there.) ... Read more

Surprising benefit - quieter!
Ordinarily I would not be particularly excited about odor-removing filters. However, I was surprised after installing my first replacement set of odor filters that my purifier (model 04163) ran much quieter at the lowest speed setting. I'm not entirely sure of the added electrical cost of running these filters (I have pet birds that generate a lot of dust and dander and the filters run 24/7), but it may be that the reduced fan speed to get the same air discharge will save me money. OK fan
I bought 2 of these and expected them to be quiet but I am dissapointed with the high speed, its loud. I put one in my kid's room to help circulate the air but the fan's high speed is loud and it scares my 3 years old son. The mid speed noise is ok but does not blow. One of the fan has a clicking sound during the oscillation, the other is not.

I have a small room, and needed a quiet tower fan with good functionality. I bought the Envircare EFY041 not really knowing how good it will be.It fit snugly in one corner. I received it (Free shipping -2days after ordering-AMAZON ROCKS!) and I set it up in less than 10 minutes. The remote is small and functional and very handy. The 3 speed settings help, and compared to other fans ,even the fastest speed isnt loud enough to dim the music or anything. Oscillation is good, makes a VERY SLIGHT creaking noise(maybe its just mine!) , though not loud enough 2 bother anyone.
On the whole, it is a bit pricey , but compared to monster fans which are loud enough to keep the entire neighbourhood awake, I highly recommend this.
Oh, the air filtration is a nice added feature, but be sure 2 clean the filter periodically!!

Quietest 5000 BTU a/c I've encountered
I bought this unit in, I believe, 2001. OK, it is not "noisefree". However, compared to other units I have used (Goldstar, Maytag, Haier), it is MUCH quieter. The Goldstar is a lousy 2-piece design that never stops rattling. The Maytag--the loudest compressor I've ever heard. The Haier was pretty good, easily half as quiet as the Maytag (both were priced around $79). However, the Sharp was probably half as loud as even the Haier. It is pricier, though. But if you want a relatively quiet 5000BTU unit, I think this is a good one to get.
