Amazon.com Review

Cordless screwdrivers are nothing new, but this model from DeWalt puts a heavy-duty twist on the idea, and professionals are sure to appreciate it. DeWalt's 7.2-volt has the most powerful battery pack of any cordless screwdriver on the market, without sacrificing compact design. This screwdriver gets into all the tight spots cordless drills can't, and unlike other cordless screwdrivers, it won't leave you wishing for more power once there. Its 80 inch-pounds of torque is beyond even the toughest competing model, and with 16 clutch settings, it's easy to avoid stripping out screws. We also like this tool's quick-change keyless chuck and the extra maneuverability provided by the two-position handle. This is a generous kit, including the driver, a charger, two batteries, two bits, and a tough case. It may not be a revolution, but it does seem to be the first serious cordless screwdriver designed with professionals in mind. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool, very good value
I got this for xmas and have been using it daily since then. This is very handy tool. You'll very seldom pick up a hand screwdriver ever again--this is far more efficient.

The tool is easy to use. The batteries hold a charge for quite some time. Basically I reach for this whenever I need to remove or insert a screw around the house or shop(except for driving screws into wood).

The price is on the high end but I think it is worth it. Some of the "lower end" stick screwdrivers are much lighter in your hand, contain more plastic and short term replacement will be inevitable. Remember, you pay the most when you buy a low end product and eventually purchase the higher end anyway.

My only complaint, relatively minor, is that the reverse switch is very close to the trigger and sometimes you can inadvertently reverse direction when you don't want to. DeWalt's engineers made a boo boo here.

Otherwise, a tremendously useful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best screwdriver yet!
I'm an Appliance Technician and have owned and worn out stick type screwdrivers by Milwaukee, AEG and the last was a Panasonic. I was always disappointed with the torque of the other units and the length of time the batteries would hold up. While looking for a replacement for the last Panasonic I saw this one here at Toolcrib. After comparing the stats, torque, voltages, etc. I decided to give it a try. After all it cost... ... less than the new 3.7 volt Panasonic. BEST decision I've made in a long time! This tool is tremendous! Two other techs where I work already went and bought one too. I run the tool all week and swap batteries Monday morning. Haven't killed a battery as of yet. The torque is amazing. I will say the tool is quite a bit heavier than the others but the trade off of power and run time makes me not mind carrying the extra weight. I've added a set of drill bits that have hex ends and now I don't need to carry a drill on my truck. This tool is terrific and the price amazing. As a previous reviewer said "It's not a Panasonic." He's right, this tool get the job done without struggling or falling short like the Panasonic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chuck problem appears fixed by DeWalt
Bought mine here from Amazon.com about a month ago and have used and tested it with much satisfaction ever since. I reviewed all 57 reviews for this tool here before buying and I rely heavily on these reviews before buying. I was concerned about the shaft wobble and the easy releaseability of the bit when the chuck is bumped or put into a tool bucket. These were so well written up by earlier reviewers. I am pleased to say that it appears as if both situations have been resolved. The chuck release spring has been stiffened and the shaft turns true. Tested it with the collar pulled back and there is no wobble. A 6 inch bit spins true. And, the collar needs a firm pull back to release the bit now. The case has ample room for all sorts of accessories. The charger is very light to lug around. The tool brakes when you release the "trigger" which is undocumented and allows you to stop with one thread left connected on screws instead of coasting to a stop and the screw stopping where it may. The slider release to change from a straight to a pistol is spring loaded so you don't have to remember to make sure the tool is locked into its new position. It clicks into a locked positon when the tool arrives at the new configuration. The previous tool I purchased from Amazon using the reviews as decision making was for the Porter-Cable 548P Bayonet Saw.(...) I have been so thankful I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cordless Screwdriver I've Ever Owned
Yep, I'll say it again...best cordless screwdriver I've ever owned. Bye, bye to those B&D and Sears "VersaPak" poor performers and expensive batteries. I use it every day and could not be more pleased with its performance. While I'm not a big fan of bright yellow paint jobs...I sure won't have to spend time looking for it when I lay it down...you can definitely see it. DeWalt, you dun gud with this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Tool
I recently purchased this tool. It is higher priced than other models but I am convinced the extra money is well spent. The tool has good power and is comfortable to use. I used it for an electrical project, ran about 20 1-1/4 wood screws, and went around the house tightening every phillips screw I could find and the 1st battery was stilll going strong. This is a small and handy tool that everyone should have. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Milwaukee's cordless screwdriver is a handy tool with enoughpunch for most screwdriving applications, in a size small enough to fiteasily in a tool belt without falling out or taking up a lot of space. The tilting handle offers a better grip in higher-torque situations, and allows for working in tight spaces. The driver has two speedranges--200 and 400 rpm--for low- or high-torque work, as well as sixclutch settings that deliver from 5 to 22 inch-pounds ofscrew-tightening torque. This kit also comes with a 1/4-inch keyed chuckattachment for light drilling applications. While the tool has plentyof power for drilling small pilot holes--and even somecountersinking--it's first and foremost a screwdriver, and not a great replacement foreven a small handyman's cordless drill. The full kit includes thescrewdriver, two 2.4-volt batteries, a one-hour charger, a 1/4-inchkeyed chuck attachment, a four-piece bit set, and an impact-resistantcarrying case that holds the lot. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great wrist saver with just the right accessories
I bought 2 of these cordless screwdrivers years ago to help me in my job as a mechanical engineer and product designer. I kept one for myself and the other was for everybody else! It proved invaluable when assembling complex prototype instruments. I eventually bought a second battery pack, a drill chuck and a 1/4" socket adaptor with various nut driving sockets.

I'd forgotten about that wonderful tool until I recently had to disassemble, clean and reassemble a banjo with 50 brackets. The screws that held the brackets were very tight and after struggling with a few I remembered that fantastic screwdriver.

I happily found that Amazon was selling an ideal set; screwdriver with two battery packs, drill chuck, and 1/4" adaptor in a great case.

I find that it is really an indispensable tool if you do a lot of screwing (pardon my English). The banjo came apart and went together most handily. I ordered a number of long hex sockets to fit the various sizes of banjo nuts, and I'm delighted every time I use it. The torque setting lets me pick the right value to appropriately tension the bracket screws.

All in all, I'm delighted with this tool and very highly recommend it to anybody dealing with assembly of many fasteners. It is also a very handy light duty electric drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got one?
Do you work in or own a auto repair or body shop? If the answer is "yes" then you have answered another question also, "Do I really need one of the cordless screwdrivers?". I own a automotive repair shop and I honestly do know what I would do without my three Milwaukee 6547-22 2.4-Volt 2-Speed Cordless Screwdriver!!! Other than batteries, this tool is going to last you a long, long time. Its compact size will speed up productivity by getting in those tough to reach places like under the dash and engine compartment. Great tool!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars New Version of a Classic is a Disappointment
I've had an original single-speed AEG version of this 2.4 V cordless driver for 15+ years and have been very happy with it. I've had to replace the battery several times over the years (the Milwaukee batteries fit), but that's to be expected with NiCD batteries.

I recently ordered the 2-speed Milwaukee version in a case with 2 batteries and a chuck. Unlike earlier examples of the Milwaukee package I've seen, the charger in this new package does NOT have the drop-down side door with 3 screwdriver bits inside. In fact, the package has ZERO screwdriver bits included - a BIG mistake in my opinion. In addition, the Jacobs chuck included with my package is defective. It arrived gunked/rusted and wobbles a great deal. I plan to return this set and stick with my old single speed driver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super power for it's size
I bought this driver about a year ago and it has performed better than I expected. I have used it to drill holes and drive screws in 60 year old plaster. I have been a skeptic about the capability of lower voltage cordless tools but this little gem has power to spare and is what you would expect from Milwaukee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a great cordless screwdriver. In fact, for the price that it costs to buy a good quality cordless drill, one can buy this screwdriver, which will handle most quick projects, and a decent corded drill. That will give you the best of both worlds. The Milwaukee is light weight and versatile, and will handle screws and bolts, as well as drilling small holes (you'll have to buy hex shank bits or the optional chuck). Most people lug around a cordless drill that has much more power than they need. This offers just enough power and is so light and easy. The few times that you do need real power and speed, just plug in your corded drill. If you do buy the Milwaukee, get the model with 26 lbs. torque and two batteries are a must. ... Read more

We can't think of anything we'd want to add to this little hummer. It's incredible what B&D has engineered into this system (we don't think it's fair to call it a "screwdriver"). The 5-foot tape measure fits on board, or you can remove it for separate use. Dual speed range lets you drill holes at high speed and drive screws at the slower speed. A 23-position clutch, just like what's on the big boys, will keep you from stripping your screws. But get this: Unlike conventional cordless screwdrivers and regular power drills, this tool's handle easily locks in three positions for tight areas and awkward spots. Genius! And just like the "real" drills, this one's got an accessible forward/reverse rocker switch for backing screws out, too. Here's something, though, that the big-boy drill makers should pick up: It's got on integrated light so you can always see your work surface clearly. For the money, we haven't seen anything like it. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keyless Chuck
I love the rechargeable aspect of the tool. It's so light and easy to work with. The only thing missing is a keyless chuck so steel grinders can be used with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feature Packed for Under $30!!!
This is the best *cheap* cordless screwdriver I have ever used. The ergonomics of this driver feels good in the hand. Plenty of power and charge in the 6V battery. The clutch eliminates the problem of overtightening and the drill speed is great for quick pilot holes. The two bit holders and LED light really add to the convenience. I haven't used the tape, which is pretty cheesy, but I imagine it could come in hand for a quick measurement. The only have two complaints, but for less than $30 they really don't matter... 1) Should have a LED to indicate that it is charging, 2) Wish the battery was replacable. For the money, this is an indispensible gadget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong screwdriver
I have been very pleased with this screwdriver ~ it is strong. I have two along with three of the 3.6 volt B&D drivers and use the 6 volt for larger, more demanding jobs (i.e. book shelf projects, etc.). It is handy because it can be set in several different positions. It is good looking (I like macho looking tools) and it is very handy. Mine all hold good, long charges but then I am used to handling Nicad batteries because I build and fly a lot of radio control planes and you have got to know how to keep your batteries healthy or your plane becomes a "kit" again. I have just ordered a third 6 volt. I also collect tools and believe that you never have enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little screwdriver
Purchased this as a Christmas present for my wife and have been installing blinds ever since. While it's not intended to take the place of an 18 volt drill, it does a great job screwing and unscrewing. The forward, reverse rocker switch is more convient than others that we have used and the angles are handy. I would not recommend it as a replacement for the DeWalt heavy duty cordless screwdriver (my favorite), but it's lighter and 1/3 the price. Well worth the money....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great All Around Screwdriver
It does everything as advertised.

Pros: different torque settings, 2 drive speeds, small LED light, pivot point, overall "feel".

Cons: drilling is only for light duty jobs (otherwise get a real drill), charging time takes too long. connection for the charger plug is right in the pivot point and it doesn't let you use it while plugged in.

Other than the charging issues(that's why I won't give it 5 stars) but it's a great tool at a decent price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Panasoic gone bad
This electric screwdriver is worth about 9.99 and is overpriced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Screwdriver Ever
If you are in the market for an electric screwdriver for home or work you need to put one of these in your hands. Use it once and you'll see what all the rave is about. You CAN NOT be disappointed with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Screwdriver ~ If it dosn't break
This is one of the best cordless screw drivers on the market. Especially for repairing or assembling electronic devices. (computers)
BUT.....
You better hope it never breaks. Panasonic repair center will not offer service to repair it, even though it is their product. They want you to send it to a authorized service center, but they don't want to be bothered with something like a cordless screwdriver. its more expensive than some cordless drills. You would think Panasonic would give it more consideration when it comes to service, especially because it is usually only bought by professionals that buy high end tools such as this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tool, could be great
I use this tool for electronics assembly, mostly computers. What sets this model apart from 98% of the rest is the electronic clutch. Unlike the mechanical clutches on other tools, its action does not vary based on how hard you push on the screw. That means you can achieve more reliable torque settings and can work on more delicate assemblies. Further more it doesn't make that awful ratcheting sound when the clutch engages. The Makita 6705DW also has electronic clutch, but its form is too large and its handle does not articulate into a pistol grip.

Sadly, this is the best lightweight inline cordless screwdriver I could find. To be perfect this tool needs five things. First, a carry case. None is included or available. Second, a modern battery. This tool uses nickel cadmium batteries, which are large (relatively) and suffer from memory effects. Any high performance cordless device should have nickel metal hydride or lithium ion batteries, which could make this tool smaller, lighter, and give improved battery life. Third, I want a screwdriver that has continuously variable speed like that is common on many cordless drills (but not screwdrivers). This tool is just on or off, in high or low gear. Fourth, and minor, it comes with only 2 philips head bits. Strangely, no slotted bits (or any other bits at all) are included. Fifth, it should have a compartment that would accommodate 1 or 2 bits on board the tool like many cordless drills do.

This tool is the best available but it's not the tool I wanted to buy and was willing to pay for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cordless tool
I have owned 6 different "stick drills" over the past 10 years. This panasonic is far above all the others. The adjustable clutch allows for precision work and the rapid rechargeable battery really only takes 15 minutes. I wish they made a model with the power switch on the opposite side for us lefties! ... Read more

For its size, this cordless has a mighty lot of torque. It easily converts from a standard straight grip to a pistol grip, which we found to be more comfortable. It drives and backs out screws with the best of them, and it drills, too, with six clutch settings (only six, you say? Remember, it's only 2.4 volts) We think it's amazingly strong for its size, packing 26 inch/pounds of torque. And we like the choice of speeds--200 or 400 rpm--depending on whether your work is delicate or difficult. The battery recharges fast; it only takes an hour. Since it comes with No. 1 and No. 2 Phillips bits, it's ready to tackle any household chore from electronics to woodworking and basic repairs. It's a great little worker.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just as good as it looks!!
The 2.4V wireless panasonic driver made my job easy and don't worry about the 2.4V, which must be proven to be more powerful than you expect. It was perfectly working for my tedious boring job at home. If anyone who interested in electric tool for hobby or whatever, try to own it. You are not going to be disappointed. You will like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One rockin power screwdriver
I have used this driver for the last eight years as well as some others on the market, nothing will beat this unit. I am on my third driver now, not bad considering that I use this driver literally at least a dozen times a day. I use it in my work as a major appliance tech., I would recomend this driver without any reservations at all!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Lightweight Cordless Screwdriver
I've owned my Panasonic 2.4v screwdriver for about ten years, albeit unused for the past 5 or so due to lack of fresh NiCd batteries. Anyway, the EY503B was the best lightweight cordless screwdriver you could buy back around 1991, two speed with torque clutch. I used it professionally daily back then and it's versatility and performance always made my job easier. I recently bought fresh batteries and look forward to putting it back into my tool bag.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tool Ever Invented!
I have owned this tool for about 6 years, and my only complaint is that I've used it so much that I need a new battery for it, and I'm having trouble finding one. Make sure you get at least two or even three batteries for it. You'll be amazed at how much work you can do with this tool. This was the first battery-powered tool I ever bought, and although I now have a more powerful cordless drill for bigger jobs, I still come back to this one time and again for small jobs. It is light weight and its ability to bend in the middle make it work in almost any circumstance and give it great balance. It takes up almost no space in the kitchen drawer.

There are so many different kinds of hex shaft accessories that you can use with this tool. I've used the tool with nut drivers and drill bits. I even have a small hex-shaft drill chuck that further increases the usefulness of this thing. If you have a bigger cordless drill (12-18 volt), get one of these too. For smaller jobs you will experience much less wrist fatigue using this tool. Gone are the days when a small household project left me with blisters in the middle of my palms from using a hand screwdriver. I highly recommend this tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old battery lasted 7 years
One of the best things to mention about this screwdriver is the fact that you can't possibly over-tighten (and possibly break something) if you hold it with a soft grip. I have owned one of these since 1994 and just now have had to replace the batteries. I have two batteries to insure that the screwdriver is always ready to use. I bought a cordless drill and found that I could not control the force of the driver nearly as well as the Skil-Twist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
I have used this model Skil screwdriver since 1996, and find it superior to other brand screwdrivers I've used. The Flexicharge feature is great, since you can charge one battery while using another. All around good performance at a good price, I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great equipment
I purchased this drill because it has a on-board bit holder. I have found no other drill that has this feature. This is not mentioned in any of the other reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tool on the shelf
I've owned a 2211 for over ten years and it's been nearly indestructable until a couple of days ago. It's fallen off ladders, been stepped on, kicked and generally abused throughout its lifetime. After giving it a proper burial, I'm buying another. I was really pleased to find out that Skil still makes the same model. Can't say that about many tools in this price range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little driver
I've had this driver for about 12 years now. The battery charger(dual battery) finally died. I looked for a replacement online, finally ended up at my local Ace Hardware store. They were able to get me a new charger and two new battery's in three days. Make sure you take the part number with you when ordering as Skil makes a couple of variations of this driver. I use this driver for everything, I even have pin drill bits with the octagon shank that fit the driver. With it's inline design you can drive screws perfectly straight easily and it has sufficient power to drive em home in most material. It is the only driver that I presently own and I have yet to regret not having something heavier. As mentioned in another review you wont twist the heads off screws with it, and it allows you a good "feel" when you are using small brass or copper screws. I thought it was a good buy when I bought it and I still do. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No Stripping Or Over-Tightening
Let me start out my saying that I love my wife for getting me this as a gift. This is the gift that just keeps on giving.

The Black & Decker 9074TB 3.6 Volt Screwdriver is perfect for any job around the house that would involve the painstaking task of driving in screws. I just finished putting up several shelves in my bedroom, and it has never been easier thanks to this wonderful product.

The automatic spindle lock gives you much better control, allowing for no stripping or over-tightening, or even just for simple, manual use. Its sleak design and narrow nose gives you the ability to get into tight places with great ease.

This is a well-designed product with a super charge life. Besides being durable and fairly lightweight, the wall-mounting charge base should make it a lot easier to find. This screwdriver works extremely well, and will make a fine addition to any tool box.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this thing.
I purchased some inexpensive "assembly required" furniture (coffee table, entertainment center, nightstand, and few other kits). As an afterthought, I purchased this rechargeable screwdriver. I'm glad I did.

Cheaper than a full function drill (and a lot lighter), this screwdriver is small, maneuverable and just what the doctor ordered. No more sore forearms and wrists. So far I've use it to assemble furniture, take apart PC cases, screw down hard drives, add new faceplates for phone jacks, and even drove a few screws into drywall.

When the battery runs out, or you need extra torque, you can lock it into manual and turn it like a regular screwdriver. It is well built and rugged. I highly recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for the average do-it-yourselfer
I got this for my spouse and he loved it. Its easy to use, runs as long as he needs for the minor projects and repairs he does. If you are a professional who'd use a tool like this, it won't last nearly as long as you'll need. The target audience should be the average John or Jane who really just wants to make the few times a screwdriver is needed a month less work so things get fixed in a timely fashion.

1-0 out of 5 stars JUNK - Broke after using TWICE
I received this driver for Christmas, used it twice, and then heard a loud grinding sound. After taking off the drive head, I noticed that two metal posts securing plastic gears had sheared!

By comparison, my Skil driver is going on 10 years!

B&D is JUNK!

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, sort of.
I used to use a B&D cordless screwdriver, but gave it away when I found it often took as long, or longer to use this tool than using a manual screwdriver. Sure, it's faster when you have a LOT of screws or very long screws, but a cordless drill is faster still, and has the advantage of variable speed and more power. Using this screwdriver to drive long wood screws is an excercise in patience as you watch it sloooowly drive the screw in and then quit halfway as it runs out of power.

Cordless screwdrivers are cheaper than drills, true, but overall I think the classic 7.2volt Makita cordless drill is just about as compact, much more versatile, much more powerful, lasts much longer and will drive a lot more screws on a charge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this screwdriver
I'm an electrician i've been useing mine on job sites for 2 years now, mostly on industrial sites. Recently it was stolen i'm planning to purchase a second one in the near future. Accepts all standard screw tips available from any hardware store and comes with a decent assortment in a handy storage spot on the charger.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe All You Read and See
Another error by amazon.com. I ordered this and according to description (and picture) contains screwdriver bits. However, there were no screwdriver bits when it arrived. This makes this completely worthless to me. Customer service is a pain to deal with in trying to answer problems and questions on how to return item. No help at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Handy and Reliable!
I purchsed one of the kits containing this Screwdriver about a year ago. It puts the other brands to shame. So far it has really been reliable, and unlike some of the reviews I have had no problem with the batteries. It is very powerfuf for its size and very easy to use in close quarters. If your like me and have to have tools you can count on buy this, you won't be sorry!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Only One Battery
This particular model has only one battery. For the second battery, see Item 6547-22.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best one on the market...
This drill is great, small enough to get in that tight places (Especially if you get the kit vs. the drill only) tuff enough to torque a #12 x 3". The battery is not as long lasting as a full sized drill, but part of being small is ya loose something.

I work on computers with this drill (as a hobby) and am a master plumber (professionally). In both jobs this tool shines. But if you are looking for some thing that is about the same size and is a little tougher and has a longer battery life go with the Panasonic ey6225c... both are made by Panasonic (The Milwaukee 6546 is made by Panasonic and is the same as ey503) but, the 6225 is just a little beefier. ... Amazon.com Review

The Black & Decker PivotDriver two-position screwdriver is great either in the workshop or to have around home for projects that require quite a bit of screwdriving. This tool is super easy to use and locks in two positions--in-line or pistol-grip--for installing cabinet hardware or tightening screws, say, under a counter or in any other hard-to-reach place where you'd bang your knuckles with an ordinary screwdriver. Toggling between forward and reverse is easy with the rocker switch, while the automatic spindle lock allows you to manually start screws or finish them without stripping or overtightening. The narrow nosepiece also gives you added reach when installing hardware in tight spots.

The PivotDriver runs off the VersaPak battery system, which is interchangeable with all Black & Decker VersaPak products. The battery is easy to remove--just press the button near the bottom of the screwdriver. The 1.2 amp, 3.6-volt battery produces enough torque and run time for any basic household project. --Dori Anvinson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Companion to Cordless Drill
Santa Claus left this screwdriver in my stocking for Christmas. I want to thank the reviewer from Hamilton, OH for the heads up on this product's design flaw. I will be very careful not to rotate the battery, and thus break off the recessed contact, when inserting it into the handle. That is why this rates only 4 stars. Otherwise, I find this tool to be a helpful companion to my 6.0 volt Black & Decker drill. Now, I don't have to stop and change from a drill bit to a driver bit when intalling screws. It has more power than I anticipated, and its slower than expected speed is good for maintaining control in tight places. I've used this screwdriver to hang electrical boxes in the attic, and run drywall screws into 1/4" plywood sheating. I like having this power in my hand to grab screws at odd angles and run them in quickly when I am in an awkward posision and cannot turn a hand screwdriver easily with one hand. Just remember to remove and cap the battery before tossing the tool back into your tool tote. Since there is no locking mechanism, the trigger can be pushed by other tools and run the power down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A skeptic no more
At first I was reluctant to purchase a cordless screwdriver; I already owned a perfectly fine cordless drill which had served admirably as a driver for many years. When I finally broke down and bought the Black & Decker PivotDriver (for reasons I cannot explain), I was quite pleasantly surprised by how beautifully it worked, and by how much better suited it was to driving screws than my drill ever was. It quickly became one of my favorite tools.

I am unlikely to ever again use my cordless drill as a driver, and here is why: First, the PivotDriver is much lighter and smaller, making it effortless to hold and maneuver. Second, its handle can be locked into two different positions, unlike most drills, which have a fixed pistol-grip configuration. It's great being able to switch between the two positions instantly, as one or the other is frequently more comfortable or offers greater maneuverability. Third, the spindle automatically locks when the button is released, turning it into a conventional screw driver. This is useful for really tough screws, or those that require a gentle touch. Finally, both forward and reverse are conveniently located on the "trigger", which makes a lot of sense for a screw driver (but not for a drill).

I am also impressed by the amount of torque delivered by this small device. It can handle some really difficult screws. I recently installed about a dozen metal braces in my house (part of seismic retrofitting), each one requiring between 8 and 20 screws in some rather hard and difficult-to-reach wood. The PivotDriver made it almost trivial. Go ahead, ask me if I'm a fan of cordless screw drivers.

The PivotDriver uses a "VersaPak" 3.6 Volt rechargeable battery; the driver comes with a charger and one such battery. The battery that is included is silver, but you should know that it also comes in a gold version. The gold batteries are *much* better than the silver ones; they hold a charge longer and pack a little extra punch. (Love that torque!) These batteries (both silver and gold) can also be used in numerous other cordless tools offered by both Black & Decker and Sears (aka Craftsman). They are very light-weight and easy to pop in and out. They take up to six hours to charge, however.

At the risk of sounding sexist, allow me to offer some advice to the ladies. If you're looking for a great practical gift for hubby, look no further. It's true; for some mysterious reason guys really do love cordless screw drivers, and this one is a beaut. To really impress him, after he's opened it and thanked you profusely, casually say "I almost got you the ______ version, but I thought you would appreciate having at least 25 foot-pounds of torque." He'll see you in a whole new light. (You can fill in the blank with any other brand name.)

Few things these days seem to be truly well designed, durable, and inexpensive. This little gem is all three. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great electric screwdriver
The key to buying Black and Decker products (including this product and the dustbuster), is to make sure that your product uses the versa packs batteries. Versa Pack batteries make it easy to replace the batteries when they die.

This is a great screwdriver and has versa pack. What more need I say?

2-0 out of 5 stars It's great when it works - but its not very durable
I've gone through two of the Pivot Drivers in as many years and am looking for something that will hold up better. I use the Pivot Driver occasionally for odd jobs around the house - nothing heavy. The pivot feature is great, as is the versa-pack compatibility, but the electrical connections are flimsy.

The first Pivot Driver I had fell off a work-bench or something else I was working on and worked only intermitently after that. The second one now also functions only intermitently although I'm not sure exactly when it fell to it's demise. I can sometimes get it to work by knocking it on something but I'd rather have one which didn't pivot and worked all the time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
I guess my initial presumption was that this tool wouldn't be much use - especially considering I picked it up for ...[an undisclosed dollar amount] from Home Depot. How wrong I was!
I have found the torque of the tool more than adequate for small simple things. Having recently had a baby, this tool is invaluable for continually changing batteries on baby toys that are always locked down with a screw. Also, I have found the tool great for work I do on my PC. It has helped me in the replacement of hard drives and CD burners. I also appreciate the fact that you can place the shaft at an angle for certain work - most helpful.
In regard to the battery issue in other reviews, I have always removed the battery after use so I have never had this problem. I have also found the battery life as more than adequate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tool I Can Count On
For more than ten years this tool has never failed to function perfectly. I like the forward and reverse rocker switch. When used by a "lefty" the switch is easily operated by the index finger. For right hand operation the thumb is used. Another great feature is the lock switch which prevents the tool from accidentially being turned on. For example, if you want to snug up a screw by hand you can lock the switch off. Locking the tool before placing it in your tool box prevents accidential turn on while in storage. The battery removes easily and seems to always run longer than I expect it would. Of course, in ten years I have replaced them from time to time. The adjustable torque is a great feature too. It's a great tool for electrical work, electronic equipment repair, and working on door locks, etc. I have not missed variable speed since a quick on/off works well. I often underestimate its power. The two speed model might be worth checking on if you want to drill with it. My two single speed units give me good control. These tools have seen a lot of service and I have never regretted the purchases!

5-0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee 6540-1 2.4-Volt 190 RPM Screwdriver with Battery a
Fantastic tool for the truck or auto tech, this is definetly a case were less is better, reffering to the voltage of the unit.It is very compact yet has a nice balance between power and it's ability to get into very tight spaces. The driver is very well constructed, so is the charger ,all of which are produced in Japan, which means you are getting quality. The package also includes a jabobs chuck and chuck key, 2 batteries, a high impact carrying case and some assortyed bits.Add a good bit selection for some real versatility
.From the use I have had so far I can tell you the batteries are long lasting and the unit has been trouble free.I would recommend the offset as an assesory,it comes in very handy.Don't let the lower voltage fool you, this is a very effective tool.If your looking for a more powerful unit look to the Dewalt driver, but is is not as nearly as compact ,the price paid for more power.I personally have both of the drivers and each has it's place. This is a killer package from Milwaukee, and a must have addition to your tool chest, you will not be sorry with your choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best screwdriver for Computers
This is the best screw driver I have ever used for working on computers. With the clutch set at 1 I can drive screws in any computer component with out fear of over tightening. I have been using this screw driver for 7 years now on all things computer related and have absolutely no complaints. I have even driven screws into plastic with out stripping them.

The two speed setting is great most of the time I leave it in high with the clutch on one and don't think about it. There are the times with the occasional sticky screw where you might need to turn the clutch up and set the speed to low but the screw driver has the ability to do that with in easy reach of your thumb.

The rocker switch between forward and reverse makes it easy to take the screw back out that you just mistakenly put in.

I can't think of a more essential tool for working on computers that this screw driver ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Skil 2936 needs better batteries
I purchased the Skil 2936 screwdriver and a spare battery Feb 2003 from Lowes. The screwdriver itself is light, balanced, and works good for very light tasks. However, The batteries will not hold a charge for more than a day or two, even when fully charged and just sitting idle. The batteries lose their charge even though they are not in the screw driver. If I want to use the Skil I have to make sure the batteries are charged the evening before I plan to use the screwdriver. While in use, the batteries last only a very short time. I contacted Skil via email about the problem and was advised to send it to a service center since Skil does have a two year warranty on this unit. I may or may not do that, as I don't really think the batteries are meant to perform any better since both the batteries hold a charge the same length of time. I did however recently purchase a Dewalt DW20K 7.2 Volt screwdriver from Tool Crib to replace the Skil, and so far have been very impressed with both the screwdriver and Tool Crib. When I bought the Skil, I remember standing in Lowes with the Skil in one hand and the Dewalt in the other and finally deciding on the Skil because I didn't really want to spend $100 on a screwdriver. Too bad, because I've now spent $140 for screwdriver that is usable.

1-0 out of 5 stars A cordless screwdriver with serious design flaws
This screwdriver has three serious flaws.

First, it is a bulky handful. You need to have an immense hand to hold it easily.

Second, the switch is ill placed and awkward to use.

Third, and most important, it has only one speed and that is top speed. So you spend much of your time trying to reset the blade (Phillips or not) in the head of the screw after the blade pops out. And it pops out because the Metabo only operates at full speed. The best way to use it is to preset the screw with a regular screwdriver and then use the Metabo.

But that's a waste of time.

I'd return mine for a refund if I could find the receipt.

So don't buy it. Look instead at the Dewalt. Same price, better features.

3-0 out of 5 stars Like Driving in Europe
WEll, after reading All these great reviews i decided to TRY it out for myself. YES, i was impressed with the proformance and im' able to live with the rocker switch issue, it reminds me much like driving in Europe (driving left)eventually you get use to it, Someday im' going "customize" this unit by "reversing" the switch wires. When i purchase "cordless" equipment one of the most important factors of quality is how a manufacture designs the battery locking device. I can assure you that because of this YOU will someday find yourself adding another "way" to use duct tape. IF you remove the battery, you'll find that the "hook/tab" is as thin as a credit card and about the same material, a thin plastic. I dont' abuse my tools by no means, but on the occassional "fall", you would expect for the unit to withstand some knocking around. I hate spending money on what i believe is a good product, especially after doing my homework and finding out that I discovered the "WEAK" link. sorry to inform you all (if you haven't found out for yourselves YET) that the battery release thumb tabs are really a BAD design for such a nice cordless. :( Notice where the "hook" (male) engages into the "body" (female) section, you will see that contact surface is only a fraction of an inch, i guess more like 1/32th. Order one of these only IF you have a roll of duct tape in your garage, you'll need it. I guess this was the reason "Metabo" did'nt design for the battery to sit in a charger (battery is a rear plug in type) so that you would only have to UNdo the duct tape once to change out the BAD battery with the spare. Happy, well you know....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool
I was going to go with a Panasonic because of their excellent battery life, but the design of their cordless screwdriver just wasn't to my liking. After reading these reviews and paying the most attention to the battery life I purchased this little gem. The first project was using it to put-on and snug down bolts on the construction of a 24' X 30' metal garage building (60+ lbs of bolts). From morning til after dark I used this screwdriver, and it did great. It needed recharging after all that but to have lasted the day with what I was doing was really impressive. I'm still on the second battery - 1st charge, I've put together 11 PC's with it and it's running like it's at full charge.

On the bad side I do agree with the reviewer who said the rocker switch should be front to back, totally agree, it's awkward at times.

Other than that the torque adjustment, the recharger, the batteries, the case, the holster, the material it's made out of, ... I'm thrilled with all of them ! Great screwdriver !

5-0 out of 5 stars A great little tool
I have had this power screwdriver a few weeks now, and it is really a great little tool. It does everything that I have asked it to and more. I have used it several times (a couple of times for an extended period), and I have just now had to switch batteries. It has exceptional power for such a small tool. I really recommend this tool for the get up on the roof type jobs as well as a second unit in the shop. Work safely!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Handy
I've had this drill for almost a year now and figured I should say a little something about it. I'm an electrician and constantly kept finding myself caught between two power/speed factors, those being my 18 volt drill or a screw driver. For instance, trim plates, cover plates, p-rings, box extensions pretty much anything secured with a #6 or #8 screw not to mention plugs and switches, these are an excellent example of where this tool has become invaluable to me. 18 volt drill? too big and clunky to drag around for small screw work like that. Screw driver? too slow, if you've done alot of trim work you know what I mean. The solution? the Power Grip. What a handy device this thing is, fits right in your belt bag like a fat screwdriver or a pants pocket for that matter. It's the perfect tool for work that ranges in the middle of the power/speed dilemma. I carry the thing in my bag with the rest of my hand tools with a couple tips and just leave the flat head tip in it unless I'm gonna drive a screw or three. I couldn't be more pleased(well, maybe if they saw it in their hearts to have put a variable speed trigger in it). The battery life on this thing is shocking(seriously), if you use it like it was meant to be used you can go a week or two on one battery( I kid you not), unless you try to drive wood screws all day with it, but that's what the 18 volt is for, right? Ya the charge time is a little slow, but treat it right, don't throw it in the charger for 30 mins. use it and repeat the cycle, take it home when one dies and leave it over night you won't be disappointed. One more thing for you electricians out there, tired of gettin that cramped up wire nut hand? get one of those hex drive wire nut twisters pop it in your Power Grip, problem solved. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product Just don't misplace your charger
The other reviews pretty much cover this tool with one large exception. Make sure you never misplace your charger. The instruction manual gives no info at all on this vital part and Black and Decker's website is just as helpful. The part # is 5102293-09 if you need to buy a new one, but you won't find it listed at the website, or any info about it.

I will now continue my quest for some helpful description of this most valuable part.

5-0 out of 5 stars STOP SCREWING AROUND!
We've all been there. There's that teeny screw just under the sink...just under the counter...just out of reach behind the wall...positioned just so. All it needs is a turn or two.
But it's impossible to reach. Not anymore. This is undoubtedly the handiest screwdriver we've come across---a three-position cordless ditty made by Black & Decker. The 2.4-volt rechargeable screwdriver offers the advantages of a traditional screwdriver when in the in-line position; switch to the middle- or right-angled position, and the extended, narrow bit holder reaches those ... hard-to-reach places. That's just for
starters. There's also a spindle lock that offers greater control when starting or finishing screws, and allows for manual use.

Cordless screwdrivers are a wonderful invention, but some jobs around the house still require that extra control a conventional screwdriver can provide. The 3.6-volt, three-position Black & Decker 9078 screwdriver combines the best of both. As a power screwdriver, the unit operates at 180 rpm and offers up to 40 in./lbs. of torque, with 24 settings. A torque control collar allows the operator to match the torque to the job, reducing unwanted strips. A pistol grip and three-position handle allow the screwdriver to fit into some pretty tight spaces, while a spindle lock (located on the forward/reverse switch) allows the operator to use the unit as a conventional, manual screwdriver when necessary. This is especially helpful when starting and finishing screws. The screwdriver comes with five double-ended bits. Each locks securely into place and is easy to remove. The handle is also easy to adjust with just the push of a button. All in all it's a pretty handy little tool.--Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, rugged, but shy of perfect
At this price point for an electric screwdriver, I have one recommendation: temper your expectations. With that I am happy to say that this screwdriver exceeded my tempered expectations.

Pros:
Even at its bargain price, this screwdriver comes with a torque clutch and a folding body style. The thick black and orage plastic casing make the screwdriver very tough. Scoffs and scratches are usually not noticeable. The speed is great, sometimes too great, such as when driving a screw into a plastic drywall anchor, where too fast may soften or melt the plastic.

To my surprise, this screwdriver is fairly powerful. I don't know how much more powerful an electric screwdriver needs to be. I've driven 2" long screws into studs with this thing and it has never stalled. In fact, sometimes the screwdriver's power make it difficult to hold without folding it at an angle to get more leverage.

Cons:
The one serious complaint I have is with the torque clutch. With a setting that goes from 0-20 I would have expected a lot of adjustability. But even at its lowest torque setting, the clutch on my screwdriver has rarely slipped. I don't know if this is a problem with my particular unit, but it's very annoying to have to hand-tighten screws in fear of stripping them.

And from the "have the cake and eat it too" department, I wish that the screwdriver is smaller and lighter. It is not huge but it is larger and heavier than I expected.

Buy overall, this is a great screw driver. If the torque clutch had a more effective range of adjustment I would have given it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great screwdriver for daily use
I have just bought my third B&D 3.6 volt screwdriver because I want to have a large shop and wanted to have one available in several areas. This is a very good screwdriver. Not too large but great for getting into smaller places or just to carry around. The power is much better than the 2.6 volt ones. It will handle most every day wood working for the weekend worker. If you want to do heavy duty work move up to the big brother of the 3.6 volt. I like the design, looks and overall quality.

2-0 out of 5 stars good design, limited power
This is a really good design for a cordless screwdriver, but it runs out of battery power very quickly. Don't plan on it for big jobs. Since the battery is contained in the screwdriver, all you can do is plug the whole unit into the charger. I had one of the older models from black and decker and although you couldn't fit it into tight places, you could swap out batteries and keep on working.

5-0 out of 5 stars small package with great power
This is a great cordless screw driver. It is small and powerful with 40 in-lbs of torque. The combination directional on-off switch location is perfect. It also has a no run middle position so it doesn't turn itself on in your back pocket. Used it to take apart my forced air heater and some window hinges. Power and run time was good. Its battery is built in so you just can't throw in a spare battery pack if you run it down. Since I liked this screwdriver so much and it is so inexpensive I bought another one after having the first one for a month. Now if I run the first one down, I have another to take its' place. The clutch works great and I like the adjustable settings a lot. The settings with the automatic spindle lock allow me to sink the screw and then with the power off tighten the screw that extra quarter turn. Yes, I could of bought the 7.2 volt Dewalt ... but I found it too heavy and awkward, not what you want unless your into building muscles or pretending you are Tim the tool man. My advised is buy this one. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Milwaukee's cordless screwdriver is a handy tool with enough punch for most screwdriving applications, in a size small enough to fit easily in a tool belt without falling out or taking up a lot of space. The tilting handle offers a better grip in higher-torque situations, and allows for working in tight spaces. The driver has two speed ranges--200 and 400 rpm--for low- or high-torque work, as well as six clutch settings that deliver from 5 to 22 inch-pounds of screw-tightening torque. This kit also comes with a 1/4-inch keyed chuck attachment for light drilling applications. While the tool has plenty of power for drilling small pilot holes--and even some countersinking--it's first and foremost a screwdriver, and not a great replacement for even a small handyman's cordless drill. The full kit includes the screwdriver, one 2.4-volt battery, a one-hour charger, a 1/4-inch keyed chuck attachment, a four-piece bit set, and an impact-resistant carrying case that holds the lot. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous tool
I have had this tool for over 10 years and absolutely love it. It is no substitute for a cordless drill, but for small threaded fasteners it can't be beat. With the angle attachment you can get into some very tight situations. I just bought my third battery last year, and this is one of my most used tools (and I have too many, just ask my wife). I gave myself carpal tunnel using a 7.6 volt drill to install cabinet hardware. This screw driver is much more ergonomic. ... Read more
