2-0 out of 5 stars Frozen collet
Bought this router because of all the good design features and good reviews it got. Sure feels great in hand, but the collet doesn't release the bit. You end up having to tap it to release the bit. This model has not changed for about 30 yrs. I think it is time for Porter Cable to upgrade this little nice router with a self releasing collet. Other than that it is a great little router, but mine is going back simply because of the collet problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars It won't let go of the bits..............
I recently purchased this trimmer based to a large extent on reviews here. Unfortunately the writers obviously were happy using the first bit they put in it, because none of them mentioned the largest fault of this tool. The collet will not release bits, making changing bits absurdly difficult. Based on the use of my Hitachi and DeWalt routers, I assumed this problem had been solved years ago. The last time I had a problem like this was on a Sears I purchased over 20 years ago. I have given the 310P, 3 stars because other than this problem I am happy with the tool, but I would not have bought it had I been aware of this problem and I hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Built to Last!!!
This is a solid tool. Porter Cable hasn't changed this proven design for nearly a generation! Yes, there is room for improvement but for precision routing there is no better tool for the job. First of all, this machine feels like a router and not like one of those flimsy Rotozip designs. The motor housing is machined aluminum and not cheap plastic. All the adjustments are simple with a no nonsense concept. What would be a nice improvement is a simple lever release instead of the tiny round knob.

The beauty of this machine is how well the tool fits your hand. The half slot opening gives you worry free confidence your pinky finger won't turn into hamburger. Yes, there are a few sharp edges from the protruding contours but nothing beats the control your palm has over this trimmer. Maybe PC should adopt Milwaukee's "Body Grip" concept for this unit along with a plunge mechanism. Imagine a rubberized "Body Grip" plunge trimmer. Then again, too much change won't make this tool what the 310 is all about!

I know there are cheaper trimmers out there with more bells and whistles. But wrap your hands around this baby first. You'll appreciate the elegance and control this machine has to offer. Vibration is kept to a minimal with the excellent power to weight ratio. Power is more than adequate for a router this size. Routing visiblity is great and is greatly improved with one of Pat Warner's clear lexan sub-bases. Best of all, PC did not cheap'in this machine to compete with the competition...instead they introduced the 7310 which is far from being the successor to this fine tuned legend.

Too bad, PC didn't provide a metal case for this high priced machine. A cool pint size metal case would really complete the ensemble. I guess most people who purchase this trimmer are capable of building one with fine wood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well built
This is clearly a very well built router. The height adjustment is brilliant! I have a rather noisy PC 690 router and was delighted to find that the PC 310P is much quieter. The starting "kick" referred to in another review is definately there but not nearly as much as I expected. For anyone considering a small router or laminate trimmer this is an excellent way to go!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the only router you will ever need!
Well, the time finally came when I had to replace my 30 year old Craftsman router. The main shaft was exhibiting a little too much wobble for my tastes - this, after I rebuilt the works with new bearings.

I've had my eyes on the Bosch 1617 for a couple of years... nice router, but pretty heavy and the knobs felt too big to my average (yea, just average) hands. Then it occured me, "Jeez, all I ever do with my old router is edge work and pattern rout material in a table setup. Do I really NEED 2 hp and all that tool weight? Why not check out the trim router offerings?"

With the exception of this one model, they all (DeWalt, Bosch, PC) seem to have very similar builds, features and "feel". They just seem like Dremels or Roto-Zips that will hold router bits. The depth settings were so-so in their accuracy; the feel was just not what I was looking for...

Then, but what should my eyes fall upon, but the 25 year old design of the Porter-Cable 310 "Production Laminate Trimmer" - looks pretty much like a 690 on anti-steroids. Weighs in at less than half the weight at 3-3/4 lbs, has the ring depth adjustment just like the 690, the on/off in the same placement, round base, all ball-bearing, cast and machined body (not plastic like the other trimmers), and turns @ 27,500 rpm with its little 2/3 hp motor. And, only $150 bucks. WHAT!?! $$150$$?!?! I can get the Bosch for that just about that amount; guess I won't be saving any green with this purchase. Pry out the wallets boys & girls.

Hmmm, could this one be what I'm looking for though? I do, afterall, seem to be gravitating to smaller, less beastly tools of late. But would the 2/3 hp be enough? Would it mount up in my table? Can I make bushings and other accessories work? The short answer is, "Yes!" to all of the above - accepts P-C bushings, mounts up to a table just fine.

Zowie! This little router really packs a punch! Kind of like driving a sporty little roadster instead of a Mack truck. Boy does this thing handle!

Mounted it up to my table and ran off some test cuts > A-OK. Will be making up a plexi/lexan/polycarb aux. base with knobs for it. Someday maybe I'll go the mega-hp router route, but for now I'm enjoying my new pint-sized screamer (actually it is MUCH quieter and smoother than my old Craftsman). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not very good trimmer
I have a PC heavy duty router and it is great, so i ordered their laminate trimmer. The chuck does not hold the bits very securly, and must be retightened every minute or so no matter how hard you torque on it. The bases are very difficult to change, requiring a tool and a couple of minutes. I would recomend looking at the other options available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice but less than accurate flush trimming
Two weeks old and it's going back. The router base setup is less than ideal. A mounted bit should be at 90 degrees to the base but it's off by a degree or two. If you're trimming 1/4" to 3/8" off the side of a hardwood facing this is less than ideal. The bits pilot bearing runs hard against the lower material leaving a mark and the edge of the facing requires substantial sanding after your done. Checked out a few others in the store and they have the same problem. Called P&C and they claim it should be 90 degrees. The offset base heats up from the vinyl belt in the housing making the unit warm to hold for long runs.

The unit itself feels well made but adjusting the depth is a bother with the base lock loose the base is free to canter a 1/16 - 1/8 so you're always adjusting and then tightening, adjusting then tightening trying to get it just right.

Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice very nice
I can't think of any thing else you would want in a laminate trimmer. It's got everything. It's not hard to change out the bases when the time comes. I wish it was a little smoother and a lot quieter in operation though. It's not any better in those respects than my ten year old Bosch. It is far more flexible though . I was going to get another Bosch but this was cheaper and Makita didn't offer one in a kit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brian
I've tested many different laminate trimmer kits that are on the market and have found the porter cable deluxe kit to be the best value for the money. The four different bases that come with the kit allow you to do most any kind of trimming with precision and comfort. The undercut base is especially usefull for making perfect seams on large counter tops. when adjusted properly the seams almost dissapear. The porter cable router itself is smooth running with very little vibration as compared to others. The only down side that I can see is changing the bases can be somewhat combersome and time consuming, however, the added time it takes to change the base is offset by the amount of time it saves by doing the job faster and more accurately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Porter Cable Deluxe trimmer kit
As usual the tool has a good feel to it. My granddaddy would say it is built hell for stout. My only complaint is I expected a little more in the way of examples of each part in use. The examples of how to set-up each attachment are clear, but how you use some attachments are left to the user to figure out. Also the bits that came with my trimmer are not the ones listed in the instructions. They are 1\4 and 1\8 inch bits but I am unsure if you need the bits listed in the instructions because a different grind on a bit makes a lot of difference where the cutting takes place. The two bases I did figure out (standard and offset) worked as expected out of the box. I am sure this is another tool I will use and pass on to my Son. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great on doors too!
This gem rocks for hinge and striker mortise template cuts on doors and jambs. The 5" round disk accepts standard router bushings. The size and weight are great for the job! Try it; you'll love the results!

2-0 out of 5 stars Comparison User
I have both this trimmer and the comparable Porter Cable 7301. The Porter Cable is the better designed and somoother running unit. For the price difference I'd get the PC model.

Not a bad machine just not as good as the PC model.

4-0 out of 5 stars De Walt Accessories
De Walt is the top of the line, but I have one complaint about their Laminate trimmer kit and it is that if you want or need a seaming base you have to buy it as an accessory. The facts are that it is nothing more than a duplication of a base already supplied with the kit with a small roller guide attached to the base and they both are exactly the same except for the small guide that will fit in either base.
In other words it should be supplied as part of the kit and not as some accessory, lets add some value to your fine name.

3-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable but not quite what I expected
That other reviewer sounds more like a Dewalt rep than someone who has used this tool. It is a well made tool. I'm not always happy with the way Dewalt designs tools. Some of the parts in this kit are rather kindof flimsy. For the most part it is acceptable for what I will be using it for. If I had it to do again I would buy Porter Cable.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best trim router money can buy
While Dewalt tools are known to be top notch, I can say without a doubt the trim router package is by far one of the best investments you can buy. It combines all of the versitility of a standard trim/finish router, while giving the addition of a seamer, an offset base and an angle base. therefore if you want the most bang for your bucks, you cannot go wrong with the Dewalt Dw673K 7/8 HP Trim Router Kit. It is amazing how easy and yet light weight the unit is. It has far surpassed all of my expectations. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No substitute for the Porter Cable 310 production router
While this trimmer might be fine for quick roundovers and the like, it lacks the refinement and precision necessary for fine woodworking and production work. Careful observers will notice that the base and motor are not perfectly perpendicular to one another. There is too much slop in the height adjustment mechanism and set knob. Too, the base itself is not perfectly flat (place a sheet of 400 grit sandpaper on a flat table and run the base plate over it a few times. High and low spots will quickly become apparent.) All in all, the 7310 is very underwhelming in its quality and precision. As far as the "Rotozip" style trimmers go, the DeWalt and Bosch models offer better quality and refinement then this PC, though they, too, suffer from some of the same problems.

By far the better alternative is the tried-and-true Porter Cable 310 production router. This model has long been a favorite of professional cabinetmakers (the guys in my shop own two or three each), but it is somewhat unknown to the woodworking public at large. It is not made for mass market consumers (Home Depot/Lowes don't carry it), and PC has instead promoted the 7310 trimmer as its mainstay trim router. The 7310 trimmer, however, is but a shadow of the 310. Read some of the reviews on the 310 and you'll see what I mean. The 310 is truly a fine machine. At $100, the 7310 is not a great value. At $159, the 310 is worth every penny. Spend more now and you'll be very satisfied with the knowledge that you own the very best. More importantly, your work will show the wisdom of your choice.

Sadly, Porter Cable no longer sells the excellent offset, angle, and other optional bases for the 310. If you need these you can acquire them used or new-old-stock, but they are getting harder to find. The premium prices of these trimmers and optional bases found on Ebay attest to the loyal following the 310 has. These bases are available for the 7310, but you will still have to deal with the inferior design and quality of that trimmer. Again, go with the DeWalt or Bosch if you need a complete trim kit with all the bases. If you don't need them, get the 310 and you'll be set for life. You'll be glad you did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame Base
I've found the height adjustment clumsy and the knurled knob to be hard to sufficiently tighten by hand (it creeps with use). The best trim router out there is their 310P production trim router.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to get
When reading Woodworking with a router, I noticed the author stated, that after getting a standard size router, your second router should be a laminate trim router. It is so versatile. Since it is smaller than most routers, it is more manageable. Shop made jigs using a router, are best done with one of these. Since it takes the standard 1/4" bits, it makes it a convenient, multi use tool.
If you do a lot of counter top, laminate work, their combo pack, with the different bases, is the top choice. Saves a lot of money over buying the individual bases.
I looked at some overseas, and the Ryobi model, and decided to spring for the Porter Cable. The metal base, and fine adjust feature, and metal housing, set it apart. This is a professional level piece of equipment. Should give you many years of trouble free performance.
When you are doing fine work, the lightness, and ease of visibility afforded by this router, is unmatched.
If I had to be critical of it, I would say that when changing a bit, I remove the base, which isn't that hard, for easy access. The base is designed to come on and off real easy, since it is one part of a multi base system.
All in all, definitely 5 stars. The more you use it, the more it will become your favorite one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little Machine
This trimmer is a real pleasure to use; great balance, comfortable for extended periods of use. Its drawback seems to be the difficulty in changing bits, the 1/4" bit shanks are extremly tight in the 1/4" collet. Overall it is one of the more well balanced laminate trimmers that I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars JEWEL OF A TOOL
This little router works great!
I find myself using the 7310p router where I used my
heavier routers before.
It's great for cutting out laminate pieces and trimming.
It's also great for those chamfers, roundovers, etc. along a long narrow edge where a larger router is harder to hold level down the edge.
It fits in your hand well for one hand work and is easy to use
holding it sideways.
It's kind of loud, but what router isn't?
ANYONE WHO OWNS A ROUTER SHOULD HAVE THIS IN THEIR ARSENAL FOR THOSE 1/4" BIT JOBS. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning
This Deluxe kit comes with a good trimmer motor and accessories package but the trimmer guide that attaches to the accessorie plates is made out of plastic and is unusable to make a confident cut. Until Bosch creates a suitable metal guide system like they use to have on their old models and which you can find in competative models don't buy this kit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the best
If you want a trim router that does it all this is the kit for you. This can easily be considered the most complete laminating kit available. It has the best tilt base range on the market. The motor is rock solid with fairly "easy to maintain" brushes and bearings. I've owned this trimmer for years and am buying another one for my home workshop. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Porter Cable Installers kit
A nice tool which includes most everything you would want with a small router package like this. I use the offset base most, and the collet is easy to use and bits adjust easily for height. The only problem I have is that the bit chatters when used with the offset base. It has some play in it that is not a problem when using a flush trimmer bit with a bearing, but when other bits are inserted they don't cut smoothly. The other bases work very well though. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great little guitar making tool, I own three.
J. Kumorek used this tool putting his Martin Guitar Kit together, so I thought I'd try it too on my Martin herringbone D-28 Kit from Martin. It's super, adjusts easily, vertically and horizontally with the bearing guide. I've used downspiral carbide bits and regular carbide rabbetting bits successfully to cut the stairstep binding ledges for acoustic guitars.

One of these tools is dedicated to cutting the tail wedge trim, and I never adjust it. One is set up for cutting the .060 by 1/4 inch binding. The third is set up for purfling ledges inside the outer binding. And they do a great job.

I have no idea how they work as a laminate trimmer, but bet they would work great for that too. Bruce Dickey Russellville, Arkansas

5-0 out of 5 stars Good product......shame about the service!
When I asked to look at Laminate Trimmers at my local tool shop, the Dewalt stood out immediatly as a superior product. No crappy plastic here. The buisness end of the motor has a machined aluminium end that is a perfect fit where it locates in the aluminium base, & it locks in place with a lever. Height adjustment is by a micro adjustable dial that should make it real easy to get an exact setting, another trick feature is the button you push in to lock the rotation of the shaft for bit changing. Add to this a 600watt motor & a range of optional bases for any job & you couldn't go wrong......or could you? As it turns out, the marketing department at Dewalt decided not to include a template guide in the Australian model (my country) & the Dewalt people here found it to hard to deal with. In frustration I called the U.S. office & managed to get the girl at the switchboard of the Baltimore head office to put me through to a senior person in marketing, I was assured all would be taken care of...5 days later I've heard nothing & don't expect to. I'm going back to the tool store today to reluctantly exchange the Dewalt for a Makita....lots of hours & a fortune in long distance calls, all for a disk of metal that wouldn't cost more than 5 cents to make & should be included. If your willing to take the risk that you wont need to call upon Dewalts pathetic service, it's probably a good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool - A little Big
I am a dyed in the wool DeWalt user. I have over four-thousnad dollars worth of DeWalt hand tools and accessories and there is a reason for that. I do a lot of custom carpenter work in the Denver-metro area, and I have found that not only are DeWalt tools designed and constructed to hold up under demanding use but when things go wrong, which they sometimes do, the local service center is right there to get me back on the job.

When the laminate trimmer came out I was in the market for a new tool and it was pretty much a no-brainer that I would give it a try. It runs very smooth, and is well balanced. The plate height adjustment is a simple asssembly and works pretty well. I guess the only drawback I found was that of the weight and size. Although it was not extreme, I felt that the size and weight brought it in just under a five star rating, but still a very good tool.

If I had to replace it, it would be with the same tool. ... Read more

It is probably not a big deal if you intend to use it for laminate trimming, but I was planning to use it as a mini router, so wouldn't work for me. Otherwise seemed and felt like a great unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laminate Router
I have used this particular Bosch Router in my countertop business for the last 18 years. These routers will last on average 4-5 years with every day use. Easy to change out bits, light weight, and very dependable with very smooth cuts. Highly recommend to any one who installs plastic laminate! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great router, best choice I could have made
I was looking for a simple router that could do amateur routing. I wasn't looking for the expensive industrial 1/2" bit router. This router is the best value that I could have chosen, and I have been very impressed by it. The soft start and variable speed features are very helpful while the depth stop is amazing. You can stop it at any depth and pretty easily change to another depth with a built in ruler. One of the only problems I have found so far is that the line of sight can be bad when the router is down and unless you have good lighting, it is hard to see the bit to line things up sometimes. Another of the minor problems is that it is a bit heavy, but this only gets in the way when putting it into a router table, which you do not need to remove from the table to remove the bit. In another review, the person said that the router did not have attachments, but Black and Decker now makes the edge guide that works really well with the router. All in all, this is a great router and a great price for everything you get.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you are never going to be serious about woodworking....
Black and Decker is the brand for you. As a neophyte woodworker without any guidance, I thought this was a solid brand. After mowing through various B&D drills, sanders, etc, I have seen the light. These are hobbyist tools. Unlike my other B&D purchases, I had time to return this one before I found out how lacking it was. This router couldn't spin any decent sized bits and bogged down easily on hardwoods. I would have to do miniscule increments on every cut. On top of that, the plunge mechanism would slip repeatedly. Returned it and bought another brand that I won't mention as this review is to warn you off this one - not sell another.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good power and features, no attachments
This is a decently designed router. The handle is pretty comfortable, the switches work well and feel nicely designed, and the dust extraction is great. It seems to have plenty of power, and the plunge action is very smooth. However, it has a couple of fatal flaws.

First, the base is not compatible with template bushings, and no one makes a compatible baseplate, although there are a few clear acrylic ones that you could drill your own holes in (patwarner.com and Lee Valley sell them). This may not seem important initially, but if you continue to work with the router, you will almost definitely want this ability.

Second, most other common attachments aren't compatible either, like the Jasper circle jig or an edge guide. Most router companies make their own edge guides, but not B&D. And all the common aftermarket guides aren't compatible either (for example, the Microfence). This won't be too much of an issue if you use this router in a table though, which I didn't do.

Third, it only has a 1/4 inch collet. It seems to have enough power for a 1/2 inch collet, and lots of other routers in this power class have the capability, although not necessarily at the same price.

If B&D added some compatiblity, I'd like this tool a lot more. As it is, there are much better options out there (Ryobi 180PL, Porter-Cable, Bosch, DeWalt...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product for the money
This is a great router in its market segment. ...

As an entry level router in performs its duties well. The 1/4" collet grips well, and bit changing is quite smooth. The dust collection is a great feature borrowed from it's distant Dewalt cousin. The depth stop is easily set and easily locked. The trigger and lock on the handle is very easy to use as well. It is also very powerful.

The downsides of the router: it is a little on the heavy side though still easily manageable. There is no way to adjust depth when it is in the table without your own modifications. A little loud.

Overall it is a very solid router, and a great value. Great for a beginner. But don't be a fool and think you're gonna get the performance of a bosch. ... But you will get your [money's]worth. ... Read more
