This LOOKS like something "not sold in stores!"
The description of this product really should include a paragraph about how it actually works because the picture gives you absolutely no indication of what it does. The crank lets you turn the blades backwards and the "sharpening compound" which you "paint" on to the cutting edges of the blades turns the mower frame into a grinding stone. It really works well. But wait, there's more... The instructions are excellent and they also tell you how to adjust the blades. Sending the mower out to a professional (if you can find one who works on reel mowers) will cost you about 75% of what you'll pay for a new machine. This kit is worth it.

A lot of the negative reviews about the reel mowers here on Amazon.com probably come from people who haven't adjusted their machines correctly. My mower is working better than ever after making just a few simple adjustments. ... Read more

Perfect for the Novice / New Property Owner
I bought this trimmer/edger as well as a B&D blower and hedge trimmer all in one day. I couldn't ask for more for a mere $40.00 ($30.00 after rebate). It is lightweight and easy to change from trimmer to edger. I have never mowed, trimmed or edged a lawn before so having a tool this easy to use is great! It does appear to use alot of string but I was also doing some heavy edging to an unkept lawn. I don't anticipate this to be the case with normal use. Highly recommended!

Line Hog
I bought this trimmer/edger thinking how great it would be to just trim with the auto-feed feature. I have had the most difficult time with this trimmer. I used over 75 feet of line in an area smaller than 250 sq. ft. of mainly grass and some weeds. After using the spool that came with it which lasted 10 minutes, I constantly had to stop to re-wind the spool (yes, I read the directions and did it properly - 5 times). It continuously cut off pieces of line and threw them close to 100 ft. through the air. This is not safe in a California neighborhood. I would not recommend this trimmer unless you like fiddling with your trimmer.

A great trimmer/edger for the price... BUT
My experience is that this Auto Feed trimmer IS indeed a string hungry monster. I would have given it 5 stars otherwise. Fortunately, hand winding a reload is a fairly fast & simple proposition. I cannot recommend highly enough to buy the largest roll (for economy) of bulk string refill you can find. The reason I probably gobble more string than some other reviewers is because I do use it as designed, to edge along concrete as well as clear flora from along the foundation of my house. This brute actually breaks up loose cement with a loud "Ka-chunk!" (there goes a bunch of line) and keeps on whacking, so for heavy-duty operations it does garner the 5th star. Maybe with more experience I'll edge precisely and never hit the concrete at all - but in the mean time it's winding and whacking (and relaxing and admiring). I now have the best looking driveway, sidewalks & curb on my street.

Great Purchase!
I purchased this trimmer after reading other reviews and I agree that this is a wonderful trimmer. It is fairly lightweight, so it's easy to manuever and allowed me complete my trimming jobs in no time! My husband and son criticized the purchase, saying it wouldn't be heavy duty enough to take care of the trimming I wanted to do, but they were very surprised when it arrived. In fact, my husband took it out to try it and ended up completing a whole piece of property that I had intended on doing! The only downfall is having to work around an electrical cord, but I knew that at the time I decided to buy it, so I am not disappointed. Tiring for extended use - no lock on
This is a nice trimmer but it loses two stars from me because it can't be locked on, you must grip the switch at all times or it shuts off.This makes it tiring for any extended use as the switches are not very ergonomic and awkward to turn on again after it turns off because you had to change your hand position slightly.Of course you can defeat this with a sliding hose clamp or loop of string (just like you have to do on lawnmowers nowadays), but IMO not allowing a lock "on" is a stupid design "feature".Thank you, lawyers for crapping everything up. ... Good for the money
I purchased this because my wife couldn't handle the larger gas trimmer I have. It does a great job on "LIGHT" weeds and grass. If you looking to cut heavy weeds or brush save your money. It does an excellent job on what it's designed for. The trigger design isn't the best and could be improved. I also purchased another battery because it only runs strong for about 20 minutes. It's quite, light, inexpensive and pretty easy to use. Just make sure that you're going to trim grass or light weeds. For that it's a good buy. I have yet to receive the extra line spools I ordered from Amazon. If I can't get replacement line spools then this product would be worthless.

Inoperative charger
The American Gardener YS18-18 was ordered on 06-09-04 and arrived on 06-11-04. The battery charger will not work..I called American Gadner and they refered me to Utility Electric Service in Conn. They assured me they had the charger in stock and would get it out to me..Its now 06-28-04 and no charger, I called both American Gardner and Then back to Utility Electric Service, I was told the chargers were on order and I would get mine when they arrived. So far no Charger..Tiffany at American Gardner said thats all she could do. I asked for a replacement to be sent to me from American Gardner and she said they coulod not do that...So much for a 2 year guarantee. Wayhollis@aol.com

I Rely on the advice of Amazon buyers
After a lot of research for a cordless line trimmer I found previous critiques by people who purchased this item to be extremely helpful and more reliable than any other source. My trimmer arrived yesterday. It was easy to assemble, charge the battery and my yard was perfectly trimmed within the hour. It is an ideal tool for a woman who does not want the bother of a gas operated trimmer or the inconvenience of an electric cord. I am 71 years old and anticipate using this trimmer for many years to come. I thank other consumers for sharing their comments which are most helpful to others!

Excellent for home use
If all you need is a trimmer for the average suburban yard, this will do great! I did my whole yard in about 15 minutes and it had plenty of charge left. My neighbor was amazed at how well it worked and he spent over $200 for a gas trimmer. Less noise, no gas and oil to mess with, what could be better. I am getting the hedge trimmer next!

Very disappointed in product.
I was very disappointed with this item. It is very difficult to hold down the safety button and trigger at the same time. My hand gets tired after about 5 minutes. It does not trim as closely to mailbox, flower boxes, etc. as I would like.

Don't find yourself strung out.
So what did you want to know? I started my trimming carrier with the Black & Decker Automatic Feed Spool (AFS). It is just plug and go. I prefer my trimmer string to come from Black & Decker. This way I will not come unraveled trying to use some cheap substitute. The spools last longer than expected. But all good things come to an end and you don't want to be half way through the yard when you find your self strung out.

well blow me down!
Our garden at home is huge, and we have lots of big trees. In the autumn holidays I get pocket-money for clearing away the leaves on the lawn. My dad has always had a Fu-qing Blower but now has the Black & Decker BV-006 Blower/Vacuum Leaf Collection System, and my life is so much easier! Worth it's weight in gold!
I ordered this product in early September planning ahead for the season, and received it the end of October because it was backordered. Now I know why! It works great! It's a very powerful vacuum and when used with the Kangaroo container it's perfect for what I need! I bought a Sears push mulcher that looks like a lawn mower but is a dedicated mulcher and it stinks compared to this!!! Not only is this attachment at least 2-3 times more powerful, but because it's portable, it's a lot easier to use than lugging around a lawn mower mulcher. I can easily carry it to my patio, or anywhere else I need to do some spot pick-ups. Unfortunately, though, when leaves fall, twigs fall along with them, and it's probably not the best thing for the motor, so try to avoid them. I use the mulched leaves around my flower beds and delicate plants when I'm finished. Get it! You'll love how well it works. Word of caution: By the time this attachment came, I had misplaced my blower instructions, so I ended up taking it apart to put on the attachment, until I realized there's a button above the power button which was a simple release. Live and learn... Great product!

Time on your hands?
I have a rather large, corner lot with a lot of leaves. This works well if you are not in a hurry. It works very well in a sunken contrete patio area that collects leaves, vacuuming it all up well. But for clearing a large lot efficiently, it takes too long.

Works great with my Stihl Gas Blower
I saw a neighbor using this and thought what a great idea. Since I already had a Stihl blower, I searched the internet for a version of this for my blower. When I didn't find one, I decided I would try this system even though my blower is not a Black and Decker brand.

Without this system, the bag that you carry around fills up too fast and gets heavy to haul around. Since I bought this, no more stopping every minute to empty the bag.

To install on my Stihl blower, I had to remove the special attachment for B&D Blower and it easly fit onto where the leaf bag would normally attach. I had no trouble using this with a round trash can, but it has a lip which keeps the mesh portion from coming loose. I also found that I could get a really dense bag by pushing the leaves down when it fills up and mulch up some more leaves. Since I pay per bag for pickup, this saves me some money.

A DREAM COME TRUE
I was daydreaming of just such a system this year as I spent many hours sucking up the leaves from the corners of my yard. I have a 2 acre lot and its quite a chore. The original bag was quick to fill up, but then it took ages to go through the routine of detaching, emptying the bag into the old paper leaf bags, and then re-attaching the bag.
I saw this system in a store and thought I'd take a risk to order just the collection system from Amazon for my gas blower. With a bit of modification I attached it to my gas powered Homelite blower, got some Extra Large trash bags (45 gallon) for my 45 gallon square trash can.
WOW! I was off - what a system. Now I was sending most of my time sucking and almost no time bagging.
I'd recommend you use the largest trash can possible (the bag fits better) - with wheels (to help your mobility) - and put a couple of bricks in the bottom (to keep it stable as you move around the yard).

Remington pole chainsaw
The motor is made in China, the pole in taiwan. Other than that it is a good homeowner grade tool. It came with quality Oregon chain and most likely the bar was Oregon made. The motor has plenty of torque to cut through branches, the oiler has a manual pump cap that allows the user to oil the chain. The oiler leaks a little by the bar where they meet but when pumped by hand oil gets to the chain. With a sharp chain it cut through branches easily, I did some around 4-5" in diameter. I doubt the 12' length pole, seems closer to 9' though I have not measured it. It requires assembly, the instructions are not completely detailed, basic mechanical aptitude is needed. The pole to powerhaed bracket is a little tricky, longer screws would make the assembly easier, large pliers are helpfull to squeeze the bracket halves closer together to get the screws started. It can be operated without the pole as a standard chainsaw, though the 8" bar would limit it's use. Overall I'm happy with it, it's a good nitch product not many others make, except for more expensive gas models made for the professionals.

Remington 104317 Pole Chain Saw
This is a great tool. This pole saw cut through branches with ease. It is intended for small to medium size trees. I wish that the pole length was longer on it. Performs well overall and gets the job done in record time.

Terrific Chainsaw, TERRIBLE instruction for assembly
There was not anything CLOSe to helpful on the assembly parts of this saw. I wasted about 1 hour trying to understand what the text of the manual implied to in terms of the parts. Once you figure it out, it's a great chainsaw. Take your time and adjust the chain tension. Be careful too, I slipped and cut my finger while adjusting the chain.

However now that I have it up, it is wonderful. Great for trimming, and even sawing off small-to-mid small sized trees and stomps!.

One note, the saw is heavy, so while it's attached to the pole, you'll need to be at least average in strength to use it, as it's top heavy.

Terrific Chainsaw, TERRIBLE instruction for assembly
This chainsaw is great. It cuts fast and smooth, even for small trees the diameter of a baseball bat head. Convenient for reaching up or down to trim bushes and branches.

5 stars and 1/2 if not for the terrible / basically nonexistent asembly instruction. It's easy to assemble this unit, but they have NO diagrams, but only words. I wasted about 45 min trying to figure it out.

Another advice: Make sure you adjust the chain tension slowly and correctly. It makes a world of difference when cutting. Careful with the chains when adjusting too. I cut my finger when I was in a rush.

No Support- no spares
The saw works well. However, finding spare chains and blades is impossible (inputing the part# for the chain on the Troy-bilt site generates zero!). The blade is a special Oregon Lenz with adjstment built in so standard blades will will not work. always a drawback
Purchased this unit yesterday and put it together and had it fueled and running in garden in 30 minutes . It will fine chop the hardest NC clay and make soft fluff in no time. I then tried the weeder by reversing the blades. Again, fine chopped all the rock hard clay. I tried the edger and it worked fine as well.
Downside: When I tried tilling in an area that had a few small extended surface roots, it caused the handle to bend sidewards. Now I have a tiller with a bent handle to it. The cutting blades work great, but the rest of the machine needs to be beefed up a bit to handle the light weight machine. It bounces all over and is hard to control until you get some of the dirt loose enough for the machine to grab onto. Mantis has just emailed me and said they would be happy to replace the handlebars. Service from Mantis seems to be good also. This is a great little helper. Just be careful as it is a bit light duty in the frame and handlebars.
The motor and blades deserve 10 stars but again the light duty frame and handlebars keep it to only 3 stars. ... Read more

Spool is great - but cheaper to reload the one you have
The design of the spool is terrific but it's so easy to refill the spool you're really better off buying some trimmer line in bulk at Home Depot and refilling it yourself.

I could see getting a second one to keep a reloaded one handy on standby, but really, it's no trouble to refill the spool yourself and much cheaper than buying replacements.
