Once great now a relic.
While the quality of the build of this instrument is top notch, the technology is outdated. Several companies have improved the beam quality, bulb life and electrical reliability of similar products. Solid state technology (LED light) has made the standard D-cell light a dim unreliable unit. The company has rested on it's laurels for too long. Other companies have made brighter smaller longer life units in standard bulb (incandescent) and solid state (LED) formats for a number of years now. See companies like Streamlight, SureFire, Brinkmann and search for "LED Flashlights" for the whole array of new technologies.

Most of my Mag Lights have been retired in favor of LED technology lights with comparable output plus extended battery life and bulbs that last for 50,000 plus hours. Mag faces the risk of becoming the 8-track version of the flashlight in my opinion.

The best flashlights bar none!
This is Maglite - the most robust, simply designed, durable flashlight ever. All except the tiniest maglites share a number of common features: super-bright bulbs, waterproof seals, a twistable head which adjusts the spread of the beam from spot to flood, and a spare bulb in a padded compartment in the base. This is the 2D-cell version, portable but still satisfyingly solid in feel. Larger versions take 3, 4 or even 6 D-cells.

The Standard For Flashlights
What can you say about a MagLite, they're almost indestructable, very reliable and come with a spare lamp in the back. You are far more likely to have yours stolen or lost than to break it. Heck, you could probably even open coconuts with it!

Hands free light
I purchased this primarily for back packing trips. Works great. Still on the same batteries after 3 trips. Clips anywhere. Hat, tree, pack and gear loops inside of tent. Includes head strap, which also works well. A must have backcountry light.

Clip broke
I liked this for the clip, had it clipped onto suspenders. When I reached for it one time, the clip broke and it slipped from my hand into the water. It was not on, so I did not know where it fell in the murky water, and it was a bit deep, so I was not going to fish around looking for it. I will not get this again. ... Read more

Excellent, Durable Flashlight
The AA Maglite is very bright for its size. With fresh batteries, it has the potential to lighten up a moderate sized room under very dark conditions. Mine has been 100 percent reliable, even when DROPPED several times. Accidents happen, and my Mini AA is all scratched up and beaten up (the black finish has partially come off from being dropped so often), yet it continues to work (even when dropped on cement from 5 feet up on multiple occasions). The only part I've had to replace are the bulbs. While not as bright as higher tech Surefires and similar flashlights, the Maglite AA is the MOST reliable and toughest flashlight I have owneed.

Handy Gadget
This little flashlight has been a great help in many situations. I keep one in my purse and one in the kitchen drawer with the dog's leash and drop it into my pocket before taking my dog for walks at night.
It not only lights my way, but helps me find the droppings as well as the key hole when I get back to my condo.
The candle mode has come in handy during several blackouts.

A big help in a small package
I was caught by surprise by the illuminating power of this little Mag Lite. Originally, I thought it'd only be good in a pinch if the power went out in the house in the middle of the night (being a California resident, I'm all too familiar with blackouts). However, I discovered that the light beam has a significantly longer range than I originally anticipated-- that tiny little bulb puts out an unbelievable amount of candle power for its size! Now I know it's good to go both inside and out!

The on-off switch is as easy as a turn of the flashlight's head. Turn it further and you can make the beam as wide or as narrow as you need. Or twist the head completely off, and you've got the 'candle' mode mentioned in the item description. Not only is this good for illuminating a fairly large area, it's also a safer alternative at those candlelight vigil memorials!

Unfortunately, I can't personally vouch for the toughness and durability of this product-I handle my mini Mag with as much care as possible, and I've yet to drop it on any kind of hard surface. You'll have to read the testimonials of the other Amazonians regarding this nifty little illuminator if you want to know about it's ability to endure the worst a person can dish out!

One drawback: the model I own has a smooth-finish handle, and isn't too easy to hold when my hands are sweaty, wet, or (in case I use it for nighttime emergency auto repair) oil-soaked. So be sure you get one that has the diamond-knurled grip finish etched on the handle!

'Late!

Perfection.
I have been using these same lights for 12 years now. The AA ones are waterproof to about 30 feet or so (the O-rings keep the seal airtight). I don't know if maglite supports that use though :) I use them not only as lights, but to prop doors open, hammer small nails. These things are TOUGH! Keep one in the car. One in the kitchen. One in the bedroom. One in the toolbox. One at work. Helpful Hints: Lightly grease the O rings with vaseline or other petroleum jelly occasionally (wipe off excess). This keeps the seals watertight, and makes the light work like new. take off head of flashlight, and examine the bulb (not lit!) - after a while they get burnt on the inside - replace occasionally to maintain maximum illumination! Replacement bulbs are CHEAP! Get some! I use these a LOT! Consider using NiMH rechargeable batteries.
