Not a durable product
Ditto all the other comments about these knives chipping very easily. I got several chips in both knives after running through only about 20 bf of poplar - and the lumber was clean and clear (already s4s). So, the "sand" excuse just doesn't cut it. Something just seems to be wrong with the design or materials used in the manufacture of these knives. And because this problem has spanned quite a period of time and has been reported from many locations, I doubt it's simply a problem with a specific production run. Trying to find alternatives (Infinity?) and if anyone else does, please post!

Really short lived blades
Other reviewers have questioned if these blades are made from butter. I'd say that's a fine analogy. You'll be lucky to get 30 board feet out of each side before they chip. I called Delta and their comment was there might have been some sand on the boards I was working. Let me up. Hopefully Freud or someone is watching and will made a decent blade for this planer that will last. If not, be sure to order them by the gross... you'll need them.

Knives made of butter?
I'm beginning to think the knives are made of butter. Initially they cut great. Glassy smooth, mirror finish, etc. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to last very long. With my very first set of knives I was planing some 13" Maple. The most I could take off without the machine almost stopping was 1/128". That's a far cry from the 1/16" bragged about on their website. It only took a couple of passes before the knives turned to garbage. I'm now on my second set of knives. I planed 40 board feet of Cherry for a project and they're already dull with a large nick in the blade (perceivably from a tiny knot in one of the boards). I already have to turn them over now. At this rate it's costing me $20 every project just to plane my stock. The knives cut softwoods great. They cut hardwoods great for a few boards. Then you might as well be using your belt sander. I'm definitely going to upgrade to a different planer if these are the only knives available.

After 20 hours use drive belt broke & damaged housing.
The planer does excellant job, but one side of blade lasted about 7 hours of planing white oak. Main drive belt shredded and damaged its housing. Have to return to service center for warranty replacement. Based on previous experience with delta/porter cable service center can expect machine to be out of service for a month. Replacing this part is not discussed in owner's manual. Manual does not provide blow up of parts or identify parts by part nos.

Blades seem ok
I used one side of the blades to plane pine wood. The boards were 4 in. wide, about 1/2 inch thick and approx. 6 ft long. I planes them down to about 3/8 in. I did about 8 pieces. Blades Last a Long time and are EASY to Install
I have been running the same set of blades in my Delta 22-560 Planer for over a year. I use them to plane quarter-sawn white oak and have done about 1500 board feet. The blades are still sharp. I have not yet felt a need to flip them. I did remove them once to see how hard it would be. The locator holes in the blades made it EASY. The tight tolerence between the holes and the locator pins insured a minimal (less than .002")runout. The only possible problem is that the two blades MUST be ground exactly the same, there is no method to fine tune the alignment. This is not really a big problem for most sharpening services. The price is quite good, I would call them a good value.

There is no comparison to blades that go into other planers that require tedious alignment. These have alignment pins to give you an exact fit every time, plus, they are reversible, so for 2 knifes, you get 4 cutting edges. ... Read more

So Sharp They're Invisible
I bought a Makita 2012B and happily ran enough white oak through to slightly dull the blades. I thought a backup set would be a good idea so I ordered them. Months passed and no blades! Reply after reply was received from Amazon.com that it would only be a few more days until shipment. Finally, word came that they couldn't get the blades. I am starting to wonder about Makita's capability or willingness to support their products. First, they make a great planer but fail to include a dust collector. This also took months to finally receive and required going directly to the manufacturer. Now, no blades. Perhaps they are hoping that I will buy a whole new planer to get my hands on the accompanying blades. Very sharp
If you wanna cut something, this is kinda kool!

Expensive a bit, but just a little bit (like mine after it touched the blade)

I should have sharpened them myself with a big mac since the meat is so tough so it can sharpen the blade.

Don't Wait Too Long To Change Your Blades!

I experienced a broken gear on my Dewalt planer. Since my planer was out of warranty, I went through the hassle of replacing it myself.

Immediately after doing that, I put a set of these blades on.

What a difference! I had not realized that my old blades had become dull. They were still doing a great job, but what I didn't realize is that the planer was pulling too hard now. It was working too hard to plane the wood with dull blades.

Once I changed the blades, the planer had a completely different sound. Sometimes, the motor speed doesn't even change when the blades hit the wood... that's how much difference the blades made.

And don't worry... the blade height measuring jig that came as part of your DeWalt planer makes the entire process easy as can be.

Don't wait too long, or you may be replacing gears too!

Purchased this planer a little over 1 year ago, like all of my DeWalt power tools an exellent tool at a reasonable price. (I sound like salesman) I've run about 450bf of 4/4 rough planed red oak through it, but I must admit it's about time for the knives to be sharpend, to no surprise. I work it like you would a much larger non-portable planer and it holds up to the test. The single most thing that impressed me is that straight from the box the factory set-up was perfectly within specs and has stayed that way to this day. It's paid for itself many times over, and if I ever had to purchase another planer, DeWalt would be the first I would consider. Yellow and black are becoming the dominant colors in my shop. ... There is no catch!
I have owned a 6" open stand Jet jointer for a few years now and I finally reached that point where a new set of jointer knives was unavoidable. After calling Jet customer service and learning that it would cost me alot (one might even say a ridiculous amount) to order the knives from them, I turned to Amazon. I soon discovered these Freud knives for about a third as much as Jet wanted for their knives (and half as much as Amazon wanted for Jet brand knives). I ordered, received, and installed them, and so far I have been happy with the purchase. I have jointed a fair amount of nicely figured, quarter sawn white oak and have no complaints so far. I am a big fan of Freud cutting tools and these seem to affirm my feelings.
