Amazon.com Review

Bosch's 1617EVSPK is a strong entry in the 2-1/4-horsepowercombination router market. Solid, all-magnesium construction makes theBosch durable and lightweight, while special touches, such as woodenhandles on the fixed base and contoured, soft-grip handles on the plungebase, add to the comfort of users and give the tool a look ofdistinction lacking in some of its competitors. Of course, looks areonly skin deep, and this router has plenty to offer below the surface aswell. At its heart, a powerful 12 amp, 2-1/4-horsepower motor deliversconsistent results at variable speeds of 8,000 to 25,000 rpm. Theexclusive precision centering design ensures bits are perfectly centeredin the router base, a handy feature for maintaining accurate cut lines.A wider-than-average base opening provides superior visibility andallows the Bosch to accept larger bits, while a micro bit-depthadjustment system makes fine-tuning fast and easy. Unlike manycomparable routers, the Bosch 1617EVSPK is designed to move from base tobase without the use of tools. Instead, it clamps solidly into place forquick and easy transfers. What's more, the motor never rotates whileadjusting depths, allowing you to stow the power cord on either sidewhere it's out of the way. --Carl Thress ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love this combo kit Bosch 1617EVSPK 2HP
If you were looking at getting a combo kit now is your chance to get a 2 HP unit instead of the 1.5 HP units. The softstart and self center bits work great both as a plunge router as well as a fixed base and the 2 HP soft start and mag body makes it easy to control as well as light weight.

The 2 HP unit has plenty of power to be used in a router table a nd if you can only afford one router don't skimp for a few dollars more you get more power, variable speed and the bosch 2 HP variable speed router with the micro fine adjustments.

I have had the 1617EVS fixed based for over 6 months and the extra cost to buy the plunge router attachment added up to more than this whole kit with the storage case costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bosch 1617EVSPK is Superb
I have several routers, and this Bosch PK serves a unique purpose. I leave the fixed base mounted under the router table, and put the motor into the plunge base for hand held work. It is like having two routers. With the simple twist of the motor, it drops right out of the fixed base mounted under the table, and drops into the plunge base. The big advantage is the micro adjustable knob. You may have experienced the problem of using lesser routers whose setting is lost completely when you release the clamping mechanism. It slides to another spot, then you test the setting again in frustration. With the Bosch, you get your gross setting in order, then tweak the fine adjustment knob to zero it in perfectly. Truly a precision way of working. The power is more than substantial for any task.
I have a Bench Dog router table extension for my table saw. The clear plexiglas router plate, allows the maple handles of the fixed base to show through. It is definitely impressive.
The variable speed is a necessity when using larger bits. The soft start feature is wonderful, especially when using it as a handheld, so it doesn't torque it out of your hands.
All in all it is definitely a 5 star piece of equipment. I just wish they offered the Free Deluxe Edge Guide when I bought mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars A year of research
I considered the purchase of a router and router table or shaper for over a year. After much research and reading all of the reviews I could find I decided to buy both a router and a shaper separately rather than a router table.

I purchased this router and am very impressed with the smooth speed change and overall operation of the tool. It is physically more compact and better balanced than the Porter Cable equivalent tool. You will find that the Makita is most comparable in terms of quality, price, and features. But I have more experience with Bosch products and choose this.

It took me a minute to figure out that the depth guide is also the release lever to release the motor from the base (to switch from the fixed to plunger base). On my first use I setup the deluxe edge guide as a guard, rigged the router into a right-sized hole in my work bench, and used it as a router table. I'll eventually buy a separate shaper, but this setup was accurate enough to shape window dividers.

If you are considering purchasing the Bosch router table -- I'd advise buying a stand-alone shaper like the Jet JWS-18HO or the Grizzly G1035. Grizzly also makes a G0510 shaper with stand that is cheaper than the Bosch stand alone -- and you won't have to install and remove the router -- leaving your router free for free-hand work. Note that both the Jet and the Grizzly G1035 have router bit spindles available -- but that the G0510 does not and will only accept shaper bits, not router bits.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad switch design
This is a great router, BUT there is a design flaw with the switch. I have had mine for 13 months (one month out of warranty). I used it to make a cut, turned it off and then went to make another cut and it wouldn't turn on. There are many complaints in Amazon's reviews about this switch. Bosch needs to pay attention to these reviews and should redesign this switch! It ruined my woodworking weekend!

2-0 out of 5 stars quality control
I purchased this router after considerable research. Upon receiving the kit I was fairly pleased. I used it for a brief period of time (less than two hours) on my first project and found the weight, feel, noise and control to be very pleasing. Upon trying to use it on my second project, the router would not switch on. I was not happy. I called Bosch, and of course they apologized and referred me to a service center, surprised of course because they had no idea that there was a problem with the switch. Upon setting up repairs with the service center they claimed that it was not a surprise because the switch used is undersized and it is not the first one they have had to replace. Just beware, I like everything about the router so far, but I am afraid that too many corners have been cut on their design and quality control.
I will replace the switch and will probably have to do so frequently. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Routers don't get any bigger and tougher than this Hitachi workhorse. It has the solid construction, horsepower, and features we've come to expect in a top-of-the-line router. Its heft goes a long way toward eliminating vibration, working with the soft-start motor to cut out torque at startup. Despite its nearly 12 pounds, it actually handles as well as most 3-1/4-horsepower routers we've tried in freehand applications. It has a 1/2-inch collet and a wide sub-base opening, making it suitable for working with all but the very biggest panel bits. It features electronic variable speed, so the router makes clean cuts in a wide range of different materials. We found the controls to be within easy reach of the handles, and though this isn't the quietest router we've used, it comes pretty close. We like the unique eight-position handles that let the tool be adjusted to the worker rather than the other way around. While this is a topnotch plunge router, it's also an excellent choice for table mounting, and many people choose this model for exactly that reason. This is an all-around solid tool that offers more bang per buck than many competing models. --Brian Trinen ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value for a Solid Router
This is truly a Clydesdale among the industry 3HP+ router workhorses. Built like a tank, yet nimble enough to be comfortably used with the Leigh dovetail jig. The soft start is a tremendous help for this type of operation. It is a heavy but well-balanced machine, which is an asset when maximum stability is desired. The edge guide is top quality, easy to install and accurate. I used this router to plow out 3" raised panels in oak without phasing the beast. This was possible due to the variable speed settings for any sized bit. The router is also equipped with an adapter that accepts PC guide bushings. The height adjustment knob is a bit flimsy, but it works well and provides good accuracy. The only complaint I have is that the 1/4" collet will not sufficiently hold any of my 1/4" bits. I purchased an aftermarket slotted collet that does the job. The Hitachi collet simply was not ground accurately. However, now that the kit comes with the height adjustment knob, I'd say jump all over it. This is a great deal, and I'm elated with my decision to go with Hitachi's green machine. Wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good enought to get two
Two years ago I bought my first Hitachi M12V for the new router table I made. I read all tool reviews from magazines and web sites and decided that for that price and options this was the router to buy. I don't regret. I appreciate its power, variable speed, fine adjusment knob and its bright color (it brighten my workshop !!! and my pride !!!). Since I took off the handles and the springs to use it in my router table exclusively, since I wanted another router for heavy hand-held tasks, since I liked its smooth and easy locking mecanism, since the price is quite fair, I didn't hesitate to buy another one, even if the 1/4" collet takes a little more attention. After writing to The Router Workshop TV program hosts and Hitachi-Koki co. I know now that I have to align the slots of the collet and chuck and that using two wrenches brings me to a tight capture of the 1/4" router bits. On this second router I won't take off the wings (with a Dremel) that supports the brass bushing guides since I won't be using big router bits in hand-held routing operations. I'm a serious woodworker and this last is my seventh router.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dedicated table router
After much review of 3 HP routers; I decided to purchase the Hitachi as a dedicated table router. The router arrived quickly, but the sub-base was cracked & the fine adjustment knob was broken. Amazon quickly replaced the router. At the time I placed my order, late November. Amazon.com had a $25 off Hitachi coupon, plus the $159 sale, & free shipping. A great deal for only $135!!
I have only used the router as a fixed & plunge. Very hefty, very smooth motor wind-up from 8000-25000rpm. I'm waiting for my unisaw to arrive, and to make a router table on the outfeed table. As noted by other M12V user's; If your going to use large panel bits, you'll have to remove the metal ears that are used to attach the guide bushings. Not a problem since I have other routers for fine template work. Thus far, I have been very pleased with the sound construction, ease of changing bits (1/2" & 1/4"). The router may a bit too heavy & bulky for jig/template work. But if you looking for a powerful router for your router table. This Hiitachi should be at the top of your list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great router
Bought this router with the idea of using it in a table exclusively. I Figured it would be too heavy for using it without a table, but I was wrong: the smooth slowstart feature and the router having no vibration makes it easily controlled.
I did end up mounting it in a table and it works great with large style and rail cutters.
I compared this against the larger DeWalt, but this one won based on price. As to performance, they are probably equal.

If you need a larger router for a good price, get this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Router Wins because of Comfortable Controls
Bought an expensive Dewalt router some three years ago and never became comfortable with it. I use routers solely for hand work and relegate all table usage (including panels) to my Grizzly shaper. Gave the Dewalt to a woodworking friend in gratitude for his help in moving tools to a new shop.
Saw the Hitachi on Amazon.com with their $25.00 coupon (at the time) and could not resist trying it out.
UNLIKE other reviewers, I like the tool because it is easy to operate outside of the router table. Both the on/off switch (soft start) and the depth lock are within easy reach of the right hand. It is no more heavy than any other powerful router and not as bad as some Porter Cable models I tried. I use custom side clamps set up for 1/4 and 1/2 inch bits in order to plough mortises easily (and with great accuracy). Unlike my experience with the Dewalt, I now enjoy reaching for the Hitachi (and allow me to stress I am a fan of many other Dewalt tools -- especially their large table saw and famous miter saws).
LIKE other reviewers I can attest to the following:
1. Your Hitachi might come to you with a stiff spring mechanism. Mine was so bad I had to to use a hammer to free it (and this is why I'm giving it 4, not 5 stars). I have noted that as you use the tool, sawdust builds in the channel and it requires attention. Not a killer problem, but not well done, either.
2. Half-inch router bits provide more operating security and finish quality than do their 1/4 inch counterparts. Have read this on the web and can second the comparative preference.
I do woodworking as a serious hobby. For me, it is as important that the tool be comfortable to use as it is that it produce a high-quality result. Can recommend the Hitachi in this ergonomic arena -- at the price quoted on Amazon it is a bargain. ... Read more

What's your biggest complaint about using a router in a table? Height adjustment, right? Welcome to the router of your dreams. Porter-Cable's routers are among the best in the industry, and they just went one step better with a simple but ingenious device called a "Router Table Height Adjuster." It does what it sounds like: lets you adjust bit height from above the table. That's just one of many reasons we're so impressed with the 895 kit. Soft start tames the voracious 12-amp motor so there's no twist at startup. Variable speed ranges from 10,000 to 23,000 rpm with electronic feedback. Both bases are among our favorites in the routing world for their ease of control and fit in hand. The plunge base rides smooth as silk, and the locking mechanisms and depth turrets area right where you'd naturally want them. Dust is collected right through the base, too, for a clean sightline. Another nice feature: For safety's sake, there's an automatic bit-changing power lock-off. This is the perfect outfit for the home woodworker--it's the only router you'll ever need, since the plunge base in included--as well as the professional, who demands the kind of performance Porter-Cable brings with this model.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 4-0 out of 5 stars overall a great router
This is my 3rd router. My 30 year old B&D commercial router still
works but it was tough to adjust the height after I mounted it in a router table. This led to my purchase of a Bosch 1617 which works much better in the router table. I was disappointed that it was so noisy, especially since it was advertised to ne a very quiet machine. Changing bits on the Bosch was was as awkward as changing them on my B&D.
I have been so impressed with my new 895PK that I discarded my Porter Cable router table and built a new router table using oak for the cabinet complete with 6 drawers and storage compartments. I love the ease of height adjustment and blade change, the quiet motor, and the power this machine has.

I haven't used the plunge base yet. I have never had a plunge base router and doubt I will ever have much use for the plunge base. I would rate this router 5 stars if the owners manual was
better written

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the 690, good for a router table
This is the first router designed specifically for router table use, so promoted by Porter-Cable. Adjusts nicely from the top of the table. And is removed nicely with the same adjuster.
This is my third Porter-Cable router.
The other router I was looking at was the 8529 Porter-Cable which is just a plunge router that's supposed to be good for the router table, which you can adjust from the top of the table.
The plunge base I find somewhat awkward. I don't do that much in terms of plunge routing and the plunge routing I did do was manageable once I got up to speed. I think it will be ok if I need too use it. It seems to stick a bit, it's not a tight, smooth plunge and the lever feels alittle awkward. I do believe it's much better than the 690s plunge base which I thought was a slight step up from useless. If I begin doing more plunge routing and I find this base isn't working good for me I may reevaluate my review and/or get another router.
My first use is in the router table, second is hand held so for that I like the fit, finish, overall design and ergonomics.
For running simple edges and some jointery I found this a good option. The ability to adjust this so well from the top of the table without having to get a lift is well worth it for me.I also liked being able to use some of my guide that i previously bought for my 690.
If I needed to do a lot of panel doors and a lot of horsepower. I'd get a shaper and not waste money on a dedicated router and lift.

1-0 out of 5 stars Base is cracked upon receipt
Well...ONE star. I bought this model based on reviews on various woodworking forums and for the above table adjusting feature. While waiting for this to arrive I built my own router table for this model. As mentioned by a previous buyer, the spindle lock was cracked, except mine came that way. So I cant really rate the performance. Not sure at this time If I will go with a replacement unit or just return the whole thing and get something else. I really wanted the above table feature but the finish on this really leaves a lot to be desired. I will update with performance if I get a replacement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless router
I just bought this piece of %#*&%*# about 3 weeks ago. When I opened the box, I was so disappointed about the finish and the material used. It seemed like that it was made in a cheapest labor country using the cheapest aluminum and plastic. The plunge locking lever, the clamp, the height adjustment seem will break down soon with a little use. The plunging action is stuck most time, and the locking mechanism hangs up. After only a couple of times of changing the bits, the spindle lock bend, cracked and stuck there. Now the router can not be used until it gets fixed. Some other guys said better not use the spindle lock, but for making the dovetails, there is no room there for using two wrenches. From the crack, you can tell the material used for the spindle lock is a cheap metal. Also the spindle lock itself is too small to stand a proper torque..
Overall: the plunge base is useless. That means one fourth of its value is gone. The material is cheap, and the finish is poor. Some parts will break down themselves sooner or later with a little use.
Some guy may think I am expecting too much. Come one, this is a more than $250 router. And what router's plunge action should be stuck most time, and the locking mechanism hangs up sometimes? What I expect is that it should do the job it is supposed to do. I think there shuld be some better routers out there in the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Problems with PC 890 plunge router base
I purchased the PC 895 combo back in February and I also experienced a problem with the plunge base. The plunging action was not smooth and the locking mechanism seemed to hang up. Was not happy with it at all.

Last week I had a trip scheduled to Atlanta so I took my plunge base and motor by the Atlanta PC service center. The technician adjusted the locking mechanism and the plunge and now it seems to work great. The plunging action is smooth and the locking mechanism is crisp and no longer hangs up. I would suggest that any of you who are experiencing this problem to take it by the repair center. There was no charge for this and I am now happy with the plunge mechanism. ... Read more

Once in a while, we come across a tool that just makes us want to shut down the computer and hit the shop with renewed passion---and this is one of those tools. DeWalt has made such a fine router to begin with, but to package it with the bases you'd find yourself wanting later is a great move. The router itself has a super-smooth variable speed 2-1/4 -orsepower motor with a load range of 8,000 to 24,000 rpm and soft-start for virtually no twist. Kudos to DeWalt for giving this model a flat top and not the scalloped edge we've seen on their models before; this makes bit-changing a much better experience. For table use, the fixed base can't be beat. For freehand use, the D-handle offers unparalleled control and comfort. And of course, the plunge base is essential in any workshop, but we like this one for its integrated in-column dust removal (and it really works). An adjustable turret is great for repetitive work, and this turret's got five positions. We also like the placement of the plunge lock, right where you want it. For novice router-users, this is the perfect purchase; if you've been around the collet a few times, you still can't do better than this.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool DeWalt!!!
Well, this is my first "yellow" tool. I am a "blue" tool guy but I did not like some of the features on the new Makita routers, they are excellent tools with rave reviews but I did not like the entire motor turning when you adjust the depth. The problem was also compounded that nobody made a D-handle, plunge combo kit. I handled them all, every top name in the business. I took a look at the Dewalt 3piece combo and fell in love with it. It's a very well thought out system. Plus it's the only router brand that I know of that includes all three bases in one kit.

Pros:
Smooth Power, Soft start, very quiet for a router.
Three bases with great ergo design.
Awesome depth adjustment, motor does not twist.
Power cords are detachable.
Easy snap in and out bases.
Spindle lock.
Great value, D-handle base only costs you about 40 bucks with the three piece kit, retail is about $90!!
Fixed base in the router table, D-handle and plunge for freehand work, what else could you want?
Operate the power switch with your thumb without taking your hands off the router on the fixed base and plunge, not an issue with the d-handle.

Cons:
None, well ok, for you really picky people the case is larger than other routers, but remember there are three bases in there.

I did originally purchase the Milwaukee Body grip and loved it before I picked up the DeWalt. The ONLY reason I did not keep it was because I wanted a plunge base and the "red" company does not make a PB for the 5616. I did not want to spend another $200 on a plunge router, and still not have the D-handle option. This is my first router and I could not think of a better kit for the DIY homeowner to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Router
I really like this router. The soft start is great as well as the ease of use. I guarantee you won't find a better router kit for the price. The router bits that come with the kit are decent...but you'll need a set of carbide bits. It is a breeze to change bases and this has the great feel of a solid piece of machinery! Can't wait to use it again! Nice case too! You will be pleased...I sure am.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent router kit!
I picked up this router kit about two months ago and I have not looked back since. The motor has plenty of power for just about any handheld operation. I don't know that I would mount this unit in a router table though. The Hitachi M12 is more equiped for that duty. Switching bases is quick and simple and the micro adjustment ring allows for accurate height adjustment on the fixed bases.
This router kit would be a great shop addition for any beginner or even a seasoned pro!

5-0 out of 5 stars nice features, ease of use, ready for inlay, and dovetails..
I purchased this router set to do inlay work and use on the dovetail machine. I wanted to keep my bosch under the table so I did not have to pull it out all the time (by the way the bosch is a nice machine too!).
The Pros

1.) The bases on all three are narrow enough to hold brass bushings to follow templates and it was a snap to start the dovetailing like I wanted. It does have soft start like the bosch.

2.) The D handle is nice too I use that the most. I have had some trouble with the bit coming lose on the 1/4" shank but only because I did not tighten it good from the excitement of having a new tool (no harm done).

3.)It does have variable speed which I love to control on various hardwoods.

4.)The other feature I like are the cord connectors which have their own plugs and are easy to connect. The ends of the cord twist and latch so you know they're in place.

5.)The plunge base has a vaccum port on one of the shafts that I have yet to use.

6.)The dial on the router bases are smooth and raises and lowers the motor with precision and locks tight.

The cons:

1. When routing some stock you can really see the coils and bushings wind up the eletricity through the top vents which is normal but can be distracting, I'll get use to it

2.I like the one wrench bit removal with the push pin to hold the collet in place, but it takes some practice. (No more loose bits!)

Overall the machine is excellent and I am happy with the purchase and performance. The cons are very minor. I would have to choose this machine over the bosch if it were my only router because of how veritile it is (dovetail & inlay bushing bases, three bases, vaccum attachment, and variable speed) but what serious woodworker can only get away with one router? Oh yeah, and I did get the free bits......nice too.

This may be the most powerful router you'll ever own. Its3-1/4-horsepower, 15 amp motor makes quick work of anything you canfeed it. I expected it to tear out of my hands at startup, but for itsheft, it has an amazingly soft start at every speed: 10,000, 13,000,16,000, 19,000, and 21,000 rpm. This kind of power doesn't come withoutsome noise, so be sure to wear hearing protection. The handles arecomfortable and offer a secure grip, but at 17-1/2 pounds this is aheavier unit than most routers. The plunge depth range is 3 inches, andthere's no doubt this guy can handle it. The ball bearings are 100percent sealed, and a six-position depth-stop turret is a nice touch. It takes 1/2-inch shanks, so it could double as a shaper in a smallershop. Here's another nice plus: a cool auto-release collet system thatends stuck bits--no more wrench-tapping and pleading! It's a beauty ofa machine for heavy routing or production use. It won't disappoint you.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super workhorse!!!
This is the most powerful router I have ever used. As a dedicated hobbyist I wanted a router to use with my Incra Jig to make boxes. I originally bought the Bosch 2 HP and tried to make one cut and packed it up and returned to get this PC. The difference in power is amazing when cutting oak and walnut. You will need the adjustment knob accessory to make raising and lowering easier in your table,(I also removed the plunge spring handle to make it easier to adjust). It is very large and heavy so to use it for regular routing I believe would be cumbersome on lighter work. The screws that mount the sole plate are hefty and up to the task. If you need power this fits the bill.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best choice
This is a fine router of its type. The variable speed and soft start features make it work beautifully. The plunge lock is conveniently located and easy to use. Unless you are routing dados on a well supported surface, it's weight and power pretty much requires table mounting. It is too hard to control doing edges. The table mounting is where the shortcomings are noticed. The weight will cause a normal MDF router table to sag fairly quickly if it's left in place, so make sure you mount it on a removeable plate; and remove it when not in use. I mounted a Router Raizer on mine to allow height adjustment from above, but in either case it won't plunge enough to allow me to change bits from the top of the table without modification to the (hardened) wrenches. I think a better choice would be the fixed-based version (PC 7518) used with a JoinTech Master Lift Pro or JessEm Mast-R-Lift(not the Rout-R-Lift).

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongest most durable router money can buy
We have three at work. Talk about work horse. We even us it to route 3/4" ply and 5/4" lumber, over and over. Our newest is three years old, and besides the electric cable no work has been done to any of them. They do 1/8" coves to flush triming 5/4 to steel, even aluminium and they don't skip a beat. We push ours beyound any limit any designer of the tool had eve thought it would be used and it has with stood. If you want a router that can handle anything then buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made for the long run
It's a Porter Cable, isn't it? I'm picky about the tools I buy, I try to buy the very best on my budget, but I haven't had any Porter Cable tool in my hands that wasn't a good one. Made in America, and that still means something to me.

First off, this isn't made for handheld use if you plan on doing a lot of freehand work. Get a smaller, say 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 HP for that. I bought the plunge instead of the fixed base just in case I needed one in a pinch. At 21 pounds and with all the torque of a small diesel engine, it's somewhat of a chore to handle with any precision. I mounted mine on a router table and trust me, it will cut through anything you throw at it with ease. If you run large panel raising bits like I do, make sure you get the 7539 (variable speed) instead of the 7538. It will run these better at a slower speed. When you start up a 3 1/4" bit it sounds like a helocpter is hovering overhead. Much better and safer at 10 to 13000 RPM. Since I had already invested lots of $$$ in router bits, mounting this on a router table only made sense to me.

These are the industry standard, expensive but worth it. If you don't mind paying a little extra, this should last the average woodworker a lifetime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as having a shaper
I have had this router for well over five years now and really put it through its paces. The power is incredible with even the largest of bits. You can take those long half-inch diameter upcut spiral bits and plunge inch-and-a-half deep mortises in solid oak in one pass if you are so inclinded. I don't always use it in a router table because I have only had one router in the past. It is on the heavy side for hand held uses, but the soft start keeps your firmly in control. The only thing lacking is a micro-adjustment for height. An indication of how great this particular model router was made is its longevity over the years as a hallmark Porter Cable product. ... Bosch has combined power and performance to create a plungerouter that's ideally suited for virtually any application. The powerful3-1/2-horsepower Bosch 1619EVS offers variable speeds of 8,000 to 21,000rpm and a soft-start feature that minimizes startup torque. With arouter this big and powerful, it's especially nice to have the motorstart up gradually, as opposed to jumping to life the way other modelsdo. Complementing the powerful motor, the 3-3/4-inch base opening allowsthis router to accept large bits, including raised-panel bits. The1619EVS maintains a constant rpm, too, no matter what knots or gnarls abit encounters, thanks to Bosch's Constant-Response Circuitry. And theconvenient front spindle lock makes changing bits a snap betweenapplications. But perhaps the most unique feature of the 1619EVS is itsexclusive under-table setup system, which lets a user make depthadjustments as easy as 1-2-3. --Carl Thress ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Plunger for a Router Table
This is an excellent plunge router with a single exception, the plunge release lever is very difficult to operate with your left thumb, I simply cannot push the lever down far enough to fully disengage the plunge lock without shifting my natural grip on the handle. Other than that, the plunge is smooth, the router feels comfortable in my hands with a minimum of vibration. I was surprised by the lightness and balance of such a powerful router.

The mechanism used to defeat the plunge spring works flawlessly and is very easy to both engage and disengage if you read the instructions carefully. This feature is what sold me on the router in the first place, as it will spend most of its time in the router table. No need to buy a ... router lift accessory with this machine! It came with a fine adjust extension and can be easily micro-adjusted while under the table. I was also delighted to find a dust pick-up attachment in the package, I did not expect that!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic on all accounts
I am writing in defense of the disengaging mechanisms of this amazingly adequate tool. There are reviews posted that suggest the ergonomics or the instruction manual of the machine are not where they should be. I suggest to those who do not or will not spend enough quality time to get aquainted with this tool: do not buy it. This is a 31/4hp router...way more than you will need around the house. If you cannot figure out how to use this machine safely and properly, send it the hell back....or you will loose a finger, or worse. This engineering marvel resides in my router table most of the time. Adjustment is best in class. I switched from a PC Speedmatic fixed base to this gem. (and the PC is a great machine!) If you need more power than this, you should have a shaper. No router lift needed, it comes with a fine adjustment rod for easy in the table adjustment. It also comes with an EXCELLENT dust collection adapter that you can plug right into your shop vac or collection system. Do not be dismayed, gentle woodworker by the meanderings of those who know not how to read the manual, shaping bliss awaits you with this magnificent German engineered marvel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Router
Superb Router! I have mine in a router table. It handles everything extremely well - from the smallest bit to the largest panel cutter. It is relatively quiet, and never bogs down with the electronic speed control. Soft start is excellent, although I don't use mine out of the table much. The depth settings are easily accomplished, repeatable, and accurate. The speed control is a bit of a stretch under the table, but otherwise I can find no fault with this router. It is one of the best tools in my shop. If you want a powerful router with finess, that does just about everything, this is it. A quality 5-star tool in all respects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent router
Three years ago I had an impromptu manicure on one finger from a router, and since then I've been more than a bit reluctant to go near another router.

I've been feeling braver recently, and after considerable research I purchased the Bosch 1619 along with a Veritas router table. Virtually all of the 3HP+ routers have more than enough power to do any work so the decision criteria had to be based on something other than sheer power. Important to me was ease of bit changes, runout and quiet(least noise).

I haven't been disappointed, making raised panels in oak and walnut is easy-peasy with the Bosch 1619-Veritas combo.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great workhorse
I upgraded to this machine after burning out two on/off switches on my Bosch 1617EVS router.

For the most part, this 1619 resides under a router table. With the extended handle that comes standard with the router, under table adjustments are quick. Roll the large diamer handle between your hands, and the router can be moved up or down about 2 inches in 15 seconds.

I've made about 40 raised panel doors with this router so far, and I really like the power it has. My panel raising bit is 2.5 inches in diameter. I remove about 5/16 in my first pass, and then take off 1/16 to get a nice clean surface. Taking 5/16 in one pass with this large bit does not bog this machine down.

The on/off switch is built into the handle which makes for convenient free-hand operation. The switch is difficult to reach when the machine is mounted under the table, but an auxillary switch on the router table solves that problem.

I also like the built in lock on the spindle. Bits can be changed with only one wrench. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but not great
I've been replacing my bargain Sears tools with those of better quality. Couldn't be happier with my other assortment of PC tools (nailers, saws, and drill). The router comb is definately nice, but not nearly as big of a step as I expected over a $59 Sears router. Depth adjustment is definately a big improvement, but took a step back by not having a locking collet (need both wrenches) for bit changes.

Bought at a sales rep demo and got the dust collection base thrown in for free. It is better than nothing, but I wish I would have looked closer at the Dewalt set-up.

Bottom line, does the job, but falls a little short of my high expectations for PC tools.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better thought out
I recently purchased this combo because I had a need for both an evs router and a plunge option. I have a Milwaukee 1-3/4 body grip router and the 3-1/2 hp evs that I use on a regular basis. Unfortunatly Milwaukee is not coming out with a plunge base for any of their routers so I went with the PC. The evs option is nice, as are both of the bases. Where this combo falls short is 1 Both bases are set up for template guides not the wide hole for most bits. That is an option. (C'mon PC! Wake up!! how difficult is is to supply both bases with a 2 base set?!?!?). 2 the guide that comes with it, although very smooth and easily adjustable also throws off the balance of the machine making it difficult to use on long runs as it makes the router side heavy as the handles are perpendicular to the guide as opposed parallel which would make it easier to control the guide as well as push the router through the stock.
3 the evs speed settings are somewhat vague.

Other than the above issues the tool is well constructed and the soft start is really nice. If PC corrected the above issues I would rate this tool at 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the industry standard for so many accessories, etc.
As a relative beginner, I looked long and hard at all of the models of routers out there and settled on further examining and evaluating three of them -- Porter Cable Combo Kit, Makita "D" Handle, and Bosch Combo Kit. Each had impressive reviews as well as definitive pros and cons. The deciding factor came down to the vast number of accessories already available for Porter Cable and also the fact that most manufacturers have paid silent homage to the PC brand by designing their respective products around the Porter Cable name -- table inserts, plates, bushings, guides, etc. Since I didn't want to buy a brand that would require a lot of shopping around for accessories or creative workshop design and fabrication to adapt and use, this Porter Cable combo kit gave me the very best of both worlds for my level of epertise (novice) and also the money I spent. It has heft and balance as well as a genuinely solid feel to it and in its first use, I felt extremely comfortable using it to router a Roman Ogee and chamfered edge on two different pieces of stock. The router experts may disagree with me and although I would defer to their individual experience and expertise, I believe that this model router will afford me the least expensive and most valuable method of learning this particular art all the while I'm having fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Router--Greater Value!
I picked this up as a second router, and for the price and quality, it's tough to pass up. PC tools are built like tanks, and should last much longer than lesser brands which are within shot of the same price range. So far, this router has shown plenty of power and surprisingly good balance & stability considering the weight (it won't blow away). The features on both bases are built to last for the long run. Porter-Cable included the deluxe edge guide with this, and it is very nice. Things that could be better for this kit? Handles--ditch the hard plastic and thrown on a set of ergonomic, rubber-coated ones for better grip. Also, include the base for the wider, edge-routing bits with this kit--it's kind of tacky to have to make a 2nd trip to pickup a base which is so obviously needed & used--and spend $15 for it. The case should also be molded to hold the edge guide that's included--it was loose in the shipping box.
Overall, very satisfied with the router & results for the money ($160). ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This router combo pack from DeWalt has all the design features to make it a popular choice with woodworkers and professional carpenters. The tool's powerhouse is a smooth-running, 12 amp, 2-1/4-horsepower variable-speed motor with soft start and a spindle lock. When using the fixed base, a micro-fine adjustment ring is used to dial in the height setting at 1/64-inch increments, so the motor itself doesn't need to be turned, and as a consequence, the position of the switch and cord doesn't change every time your cut-depth does. This kit also comes with DeWalt's DW6182 plunge-router base--making it essentially two routers at one price--and DeWalt has thoughtfully made motor removal and base changing a quick and easy, tool-free operation. The plunge base features DeWalt's through-the-column dust collection system (which is also used in their popular DW621 dedicated plunge router). This efficient feature quickly removes the dust, leaving you with better cut visibility and a cleaner workspace. The plunge action itself is as smooth as you'd want, and the micro-fine depth adjustment offers precision to 5/128 inch. In addition, there's a built-in, five-position adjustable turret stop for use in making repeated or stepped plunge cuts. As finishing touches, the toggle switch is sealed against dust penetration, and the cord is fully detachable for use with other DeWalt bases and to protect it in storage. DeWalt's engineers and designers clearly spent a lot of time making sure this router package addressed every need a woodworker could have, and the result is a tool that stands with the best in its price range. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Router !
I have a heavy-duty PC router (in a table) and now wanted a small hand router. I first looked at the PC router on Amazon
but after looking at a lot of negative reviews quickly channged
my name. I then went to my local hardware store and looked at
the Bosch router. Picking it up I found that the handles on the
unit were loose and there was no easy way to tighten them up.
This I didn't like. When I tried to remove the motor to put it
into a different base I had trouble. It was difficult and I
could not do it. What the problem was I don't know but I then
moved on to the Dewalt router. This router felt great in my
hands. The router's handles were tight and they could easily be tightened if necessary. The motor came out of its fixed base easily and went into the other base with no problem. Everything about this router seems to be really well thought out and made well. I am very happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Router Kit on Market
This will make my 3rd router and it was well worth the wait. I have been reading editorial reviews about this router for months now and placed my order as soon as I saw it available. Most kits tend to do well in fixed OR plunge mechanics but lack in one or the other. This is truly 2 routers in one. The plunge is smooth as glass and the fixed base is well balanced and very ergonomical. The 2 1/4 motor is a nice medium between power and low weight. I keep a 3 1/4 PC mounted to my table and I can't imagine trying to do much hand work with it. The case is nice too. Other great features: dust collection from the plunge base, variable speed, soft-start, removable cord and clear plastic base plates. Everything was well designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Router
This is the first router I have purchased. I have used many and this, by far, beats them all.

+ Warm-up starting, quiet, comfortable handles, excellent control, and precision.

- Somewhat top heavy and the storage box is huge.

I would recommend this to all users reguardless of skill level

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than I hoped for!
If you've read this far through the reviews without buying one of these router kits then I recommend you bail out now and go buy one.

This is my first "serious" router. I have woodworker neighbors who let me use their Porter-Cable and Hitachi routers, and when the time came for me to upgrade to a real tool my choice was between thhis and the P-C combo. One of my friends had just bought the P-C combo, and I got a chance to handle the DeWalt tool at a woodworker's store. Something about the DeWalt appealed to me over the P-C, so I took the plunge (no pun intended) and it arrived within a week.

First impression is flawless fit and finish. The accessories in the kit were fairly standard, but the true test was whether it could cut wood. I ran a few dadoes in plywood and it seemed capable, but a real test was needed. The same week I bought this tool I bought a Rockler router table, and real test was cutting rails and stiles for cabinet doors. It passed with flying colors, quieter and smoother than I expected, and it didn't balk at taking full depth cuts with a raised panel bit.

The plunge mechanism is smooth and easy to use. I have seen so many different depth adjusters on plunge routers, and there really isn't much to differentiate between models in setting plunge depth. I'm fine with the DeWalt method.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this kit to anybody. The base is sized to accept standard Porter-Cable bushings, and the fixed base hole pattern fits all PC690 baseplates etc.

Maybe Santa will bring me a D-Handle so I can leave the fixed base in the router table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great combo kit - PC watch out !!!
Being a PC fan for many years, I was a bit reluctant to buy this particular plunge/fixed base combo router. After cohersive persuasion from a friend and reading a few good reviews on the item I took the "plunge" and bought the DW618PK. My first impression of the item was really good. The quality of material and ease of use are great. Once I setup the router and powered it up, I was surpised of how "quiet" it was versus other routers spinning at 24K RPM. The soft start is great and the ergonomics of the handles are superb. One thing I don't like is the hard to reach power toggle switch, but that can be resolved by getting the D-Handle base. Overall i'm more than happy with the router kit and I recommend this product to all woodworkers. Thanks DeWalt... ... Read more

From the moment you get your hands on it, you'll appreciate thequality of this router. The handles offer total comfort and confidenceas you guide this 11-1/4-pound beauty around. Its soft start means nojerking, even when you start it at its peak speed of 22,000 rpm (itsbottom range is 8,000 rpm). The 15 amp motor is quieter than you'dexpect in a router this size, and the rack-and-pinion depth adjustmentDeWalt is known and loved for comes equipped with a magnified scale anda micro fine-adjustment knob. The plunge mechanism is smooth assilk--better than on routers twice the price--and it would serveperfectly in a table or for freehand work. The 625 comes with 1/2- and1/4-inch collets, and when it's time to change the bit, you'll reallyappreciate the spindle-lock button; it's a big square with a fingerdepression, unlike most other routers that offer either two wrenches towrestle with or a small, sharp spindle-lock pin that leaves a red dentin your finger. 5-0 out of 5 stars Love the power!
Anyone using this router to do hand held plunge routing better have a strong grip! It's powerful. Even with the soft-start technology, the torque is amazing.

The dust collection attachment worked great until it broke. I see why it's made of clear plastic, to enable viewing the bit at work, but it sure breaks easily, and I haven't found a glue that will repair it permanently. So, I'm now thinking about adding the 621 - 2hp unit to my collection because of it's built in dust collection system. DeWalt should do something similar to the 625.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but limited
I've had my DW625 about a year. I bought it because it was going to be my only router. I wanted a machine that was capable of doing just about everything a router should be capable of. Unfortunately, for me, the router is something of a mixed bag.

I am not at all disappointed with the power or handling characteristics considering the size of the machine. The 3hp motor effetely drives large bits. The low centre of gravity makes this big machine relatively easy to handle compared to other 3hp routers and the plunge action is very smooth. The on/off switch is convenient, although a switch which turns the machine off when released would be far safer. The plunge lock mechanism can be somewhat difficult to use for someone with smallish hands (for a guy), but I'm now used to it. The soft start and electronic control means that you don't get that jump when starting up and you get an even cut under varying loads. However, it's use under a router table can be rather frustrating.

I have made my own table with a 6mm (~1/4") supported acrylic surface. It's simple and should work well with the 625, especially with the fine adjuster, made for when the router is table mounted. However, even at 6mm the router cannot push the bits high enough at times. This is incredibly frustrating and it's tempting to overextend the bits in the collet, which isn't good for the collet, the bits or for safety. Using a 4mm slot cutter on multiple repeat pieces should be a breeze if you use a table with stops. Unfortunately my bit, of average length, does not extend far enough using the table due to the inadequate travel of the 625. Cutting 24 identical pieces topside then becomes infuriating.

I also recently wanted to do some template work. Most template guide adverts, including those shown here, say that the universal 1 3/16" template guides fit DeWalt routers with an adapter. I live in Cape Town and have been in touch with the local dealer and emailed DW in the USA, asking where I can get an adapter. So far, after numerous attempts to get an answer from DW, I have yet to receive a reply from the USA and the importers of DW here cannot get an answer from the UK. Getting good service with courtesy should be a consideration when buying anything. Lack of after-sales service would seriously make me consider options other than DeWalt should I be in market for a new router.

Overall I like the DW625, but it has serious limitations with regards to table mounting and using template guides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
I bought my 625 about 6 months ago as my primary router to use in a home built router cabinet and occasional free hand work. Out of the box, I was impressed, the soft start is sweet, the plunge is smooth, on/off switch is convienent. One wrench to change bits is key, and it comes with 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets. I have done most of my work with it in the table which was easy to set up. I bouth a rasmuessen plate, then I photocopied the router base and punched holes in the paper for a template. Worked perfect. The only difficult part was that it did not come with bolts to attach to plate and the instructions did not list the size, so I had to take the router to a hardware store to find the right metric bolt.

I have made some raised panel doors with no problem, the variable speed is great to slow it down for the big bits. The three turret stop is nice except when mounted upside down, the stops have a tendancy to loosen and fall out, then get stuck in my dust collection and so on.

Using it free hand is no problem despite 14 pounds and 3 horses. The large handels and low center of gravity make it easy to control.

My only gripes are these.
1. I wish it would come with a collet extender for use in a table be able to remove the plunge so I could the bits a bit further in.
2. 4 or 5 turret stops would be nicer.

Thats it, other than that the router is perfect. If you don't have a router, this is the way to go, it has virtually no limits. My next one with the 621 for my free hand work and dovetails, but for now, this one dose it all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disapointed, don't buy it .
I bought my first 625 at a wood show a little over a year ago to use it in a router table and lift from Incra. For the first 11 months as I was using the router very little it worked excellent. At 11 months the motor control burnt out and was repaired under warranty. After being repaired I was given an additional 90 day warranty. At 120 days after the main bearing seized up. Since I have a dedicated router lift for this router I decided to by a new one from Amazon. The router took 3 weeks to get even though the site said it usually ships in 24 hours. After the router did show up and was mounted in my table, I got 2 hours use before the main being again burnt up. I have now been trying for 3 days to return this router to Amazon so far no luck. The return center said it will send me an email with a shipping label but so far after 3 days no email. I have asked for a return shipping label several times and nothing. I am at a loss at how I can return this router to Amazon. I will not buy another Dewalt router after this whole experience.

The 890 router is a fine, quiet machine. However, the grip-vac and plunge bases leave a lot to be desired. I have only found one type of router operation in which the dust removal functions adequately-template routing of dishes. All other operations, free hand or on a table less than 10% of chips and dust are removed. Additionally, the dust port on the plunge base is too small for any vacuum hose/fitting I can findand I finally rigged a dodge 318 bypass hose to facilitate connection to my shopvac. Since dust and chip management were my primary for selection of the 890, I am very unhappy with this purchase. Yard sale bound. Maybe I should have waited for the arrival of the new MLCS

4-0 out of 5 stars Deficiencies
Overall, it's a fine system, and I'm glad I bought it.
However there are some astonishing design blunders:
1. On some of the plunge bases, the depth indicator is made of translucent plastic instead of transparent. This makes it impossible to read the depth indicator.
2. The spindle lock actuator on the plunge base is completely disfunctional. The motor unit cannot be brought down far enough to engage it.
3. With the dust shield in place, it's impossible to make above-the-table bit changes. Worse yet, with large bits, the entire unit must be removed from the table to change bits. Without the dust shield, above-the-table bit changes are quite easy; but you get a lot of dust sprayed around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice fixed base unit, OK plunge base unit
I bought this set mostly for use in a Bench Dog RT150 router table with the fixed base. Wanted the GripVac base for occasional "out of the box" use where the vac feature would be nice. The fixed base/motor work REALLY well in the RT150. The motor release and height adjust controls are very accessable through the cabinet door and the accessory top-side height adjust knob, though a free mail-in item, is not really needed. The only things you have to reach for are the speed control (easy), on/off (easy), and the collet lock (less easy, but tolerable). The motor is very quiet, the soft-start "way cool", and power more than adequate. The clear plastic sub-bases ae less impressive. Seem like polystyrene, but I hope they are something more durable that that. I am less impressed with the plunge base. It's OK, but compared to my P-C 7529 plunge router, it's pretty crude in features, but then it only added $30 to the cost of the fixed-base router and $6 of that is for the plastic base that can take guide bushings. Too cheap to pass up. An annoying thing about the plunge base is that it has a 1" dust port, but the location makes it very inconvenient/impossable to use with P-C's 1" dust hose. Somebody stopped thinking too soon in the design stage. No fine plunge adjust, either. I give the GripVac base 5 stars and the plunge base three, so an average of four. Overall, a very good product and worth the money. Sure wish P-C was less stingy about warranty. Milwaukee does "lifetime", why does P-C only do 1 year? By the way, the CD they give you with the kit includes a video of instructions on building a simple router table. Unfortunately, the audio periodically fails. Not a big thing, but it does make P-C look bad to ship such a thing. I think they need a little Demming influence there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great going, Porter-Cable!
I recently bought this router to supplement my Milwaukee 3.5HP table router. I have, thus far, been nothing but impressed by this new offering from P-C. It is, by far, one of the quietest routers I have yet to use (other than the original Elu I used in Europe). The dust collection system is functional, the multi-point accessible power switch is a great innovation, and the general feeling of solid quality is P-C at its best! If I had any complaint, it would not be against P-C - it would be that you really should peruse the manual first - I didn't notice the additional switch access until later (who uses manuals anyway, until they have a problem with a product).

base looked good, but plastic subase did not fit properly due to poorly machined router base. The adjustment knob also could use work in that it was too close to body to allow ease of turning. The DeWalt DW621 is the best plunge router in its class. So saythe editors of two leading woodworking magazines, PopularWoodworking and American Woodworker. And why not? It's thefirst professional-grade plunge router with built-in dust collection. It runs quietly but efficiently on a powerful 9 amp, 2-horsepowermotor. Its plunging action is smooth. It maintains variable speeds of8,000 to 24,000 rpm. Its controls are easy to work. It's mountable. Ithas a safety lock on its on/off switch for added protection. And thelist goes on. Now, whether such features qualify the DW621 as the bestis a matter of debate, but one thing is certain: this workhorse of arouter is going to carry its weight in virtually any shop or garage.--Carl Thress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeeeet!!!
The reason I bought this model was for the built-in dust collection through the handle. This one feature alone sets the Dewalt appart from the others. Truly a well designed piece of equipment, and good bang for your buck.

Pros:
Soft start will not jerk the router out of your hands
Smooth Plunging action
Great dust collection, easy clean up.
Well balanced and just the right weight
Has variable speed control
Rack and Pinion depth control is easy/fast to set and use.
Constant speed under load
Plenty of power at 2 H.P.
I like the squared sides on the base. Great when using jigs and fences.
Comes with 1/4" and 1/2" collets
The start switch is located on the handle so you never have to take your hands off the router
Plunge lock is also in the handle... very nice.

Cons:
The two step start switch takes some getting used to.
The router must wind down to a low RPM before re-start. While this can be annoying sometimes, it is bound to increase brush life.
You don't need to buy the fine height adjuster. Save your $$
The edge guide is O.K., not great. But it came as a free accessory.

Overall: I truly enjoy using this router. I recommend this model for hand help operations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great plunge router, but the base
Overall this is a great router, which I've used for four years now. Its design from the dust collection to the functions built into the handles aren't matched by anything out there. The variable speed is ideal for routing different types of material and the electronics keep it at a constant speed. HOWEVER, the base is a pain, it is not standard. If you plan to use it under a router table, figure on leaving it there, the change between above and below won't be fun. Any accessories for the base must be Dewalt and are generally trickier to find the other brands. All that being said, it is an excellant above the table router with accurate depth adjustments and a flat edge on the base for guides and jigs.

2-0 out of 5 stars 3 STRIKES AND OUT
I purchased my DW621 router several years ago after reading great publication reviews. I was particularly interested in the calibrated fine depth adjustment. Well the depth readings on my router are not even close - off 1/16 inch at 1/4 inch setting.
I called Dewalt but could not find anyone who was willing to try and understand my peoblem. Strike 1.
Well, I decided to use the router in my new Leigh Dovetail Jig which required a collet guide. When my results were poor, I finally checked bit centering. It was way off with no adjustment possible making it useless with the LEIGH jig. Strike 2! I recently purchased the LEIGH FMT mortise and tennon jig where the router mounts directly to the jig baseplate with a supplied centering tool. So far so good. On my first use, I noticed that bit the jumped about 1/20 of an inch when side pressure was applied. The movement was in the small plunge guide post. This movement occurred several times making my tennon results erratic. Strike 3 and out!!
Can somene who has written these great reviews tell me what this router is good for outside of bearing guided operations?

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice features, but out of center on my sample
I have had my DW621 for four years. I recently moved into doing dovetails and other tasks that require the use of guide bushings. I immediately noticed that the guide bushing adapter provided with the DW621 was not on center with my bits (it was out by 1/8") inch. Since I was not sure if it was the bit or the adapter that was out of alignment, I attached the DW621 to both my Jess'em router lift and a universal predrilled base plate. It was out by 1/8" in same direction on both.

Ultimately, you can make a perfectly centered baseplate with a lexan blank, a drill, a few bits and some patience, so the problem was not insurmountable if you intend to use the router freehand or in a table that accepts user made baseplates. The Jess'em router lift unfortunately does not. For me that is ok since I intend to use another router for that application (it is too much of a pain to mount/dismount).

Like other users, I have noticed that the baseplate threads strip out easily, so don't get carried away when you tigthen them.

2-0 out of 5 stars not great, only "okay"
what I didn't like:

1.) THE BASE is too small - It has a tendency to lean forward even when I move the router S-L-O-W-L-Y

2.) POWER - This router has a dissapointing motor. When it's cranked up to it's highest level I think it's weak when cutting through SOFT pine

3.) HANDLES - The lockdown handle has a tendency to work loose as I'm using it. UNFORTUNATLELY, tightening it too much will destroy it

4.) THE VACUUM - it's abililty to attach to a vacuumm is a good idea but FAILS in the end.
a.) the hose always gets in the way when you're routing (ANNOYING!!!)
B.) the joint where the hose attaches is NOT FLEXIBLE AT ALL

5.) COLLET CHANGES - the plastic cover for the vaccuum always gets in the way when you're changing bits

C-O-N-C-L-U-S-I-O-N

.... i REALLY dislike my Dewalt router... I don't think the reviewers in woodworking magazines know what they're talking about.. they're always giving this router good reviews!!! ... Read more

Isn't it time to chuck out that aluminum router table? Use this system once, and you'll never settle for less again. Freud has put together a complete router table system that offers precision, ease, and affordability all in one package. Freud is known for its routers, and this model is one reason why. This powerful, 3-1/4-horsepower variable speed workhorse is specifically designed to be mounted in a router table, unlike the typical plunge router. The large, easy-on-the-hands micro-adjust knob makes the most minute depth-of-cut changes while the machine is mounted--something other manufacturers should take note of. This router proves itself worthy with a soft start as well as constant speed and power under any load, eliminating the need for a shaper in the small shop or home workshop. Should you use this router out of the table, you'll find the controls are ergonomically placed for ease of use. The fence in this collection is the best we've seen for the price. A full revolution of the micro-increment knob gives .050 inch of travel, and there's even a dust-collection port. We'd like to see Freud put a little color on the gradations for better visibility, but that's our only complaint. A little Wite-Out would do the trick for the consumer. The high-pressure laminate top on the table we examined was super smooth, blemish-free, and perfectly flat, with an MDF core that will never warp. The aluminum T-track will take a standard miter gauge, too. We liked the rounded corners, having whacked a noggin on square corners before. Best of all, the top and base plate are predrilled for a perfect match. If you're mounting this saw on a Workmate, fear not--instructions are included. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

As my use of the router has been increasing I needed something better than my old Craftsman 12X16 aluminum table with enough said about that.
I decided to take a chance on the frued system. Well I am completely satisfied, not one complaint. The router is super and the collett was already in so no problem there. I do agree that the collect nut would be better with more depth on the nut.
The fence is awesome doesn't have as much backlash in the adjustment than a good lathe. The plans for the base give surface dimensions that they recommend. Other than that they are useless. I consider this a good piece of equipment and recommend it in lue of building your own ... Read more

Freud designed this tool as a high-powered plunge router with all the important basic features but without the bells and whistles found on more expensive competitors' tools. The result is a solid workhorse of a router at a reasonable price. And don't think it lacks anything woodworkers need to handle a wide variety of tasks. In fact, this tool includes a height-adjustment knob for table mounting and a dust collection port, both of which are considered extras on other routers.

The variable-speed dial on this router is easy to access and offers precise microadjustments, and onboard electronics keep motor speed constant. This model also offers the soft-start electronics we've come to expect on high-end power tools: power comes on smooth and quickly ramps to full speed. As a result, the big 3-1/4-horsepower motor doesn't torque the tool from the user's grip. Of course, aside from its use as a handheld router, this tool is designed to be mounted to a router table; it is powerful enough that we feel comfortable using it for many tasks we might normally assign to the spindle shaper. We find Freud's router particularly user-friendly when we're making adjustments: the sliding shaft lock, plunge lock, and quick-release depth stop are all conveniently located and easy to operate. Overall, this is a very good tool at a very good price. --Tim Block ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good router at a good price
I just recieved my Freud 3.25hp plunge and I'm impressed so far.

The Good- -This router is the Least expensive of all the heavy duty routers. -It has several standard features (height adjustment knob, 1/4" reducer collet, dust collection, edge guide, etc.) that will cost extra on the other brands like DeWalt, Porter Cable, etc. -It's relatively quite. -It has power to do any job, and then some to spare. -The on/off switch is large and easily within reach. -There are 3 adjustable depth stops which allows you multiple depth stops at the turn of the stop. -Variable Speed & Soft Start

The Bad- -The mounting screws (for router table plates like Rousseau) are a little short for me, and they're a metric thread. I thought the threads were 1/4" x #20, but I was soon proven wrong. This isn't the end of the world, it just means I have to run down to the hardware store for some longer screws. -This router is pretty heavy. I guess I can't complain much here, as mine will be mostly be table mounted. I think the Freud is lighter than most of the other brands in this power range. -The plunge action is a bit stiff. I can't complain much as this is a big router, meant for big jobs. You probably won't be doing any 1/16" freehand rounding over work with a big router like this. -The plunge lock lever works opposite what I'm used to on my old router - to lock the plunge, you lift the lever and to unlock, you lower the lever. Again this is not a major concern, just something I have to get used to. -The chuck wrench that comes with the router looks a bit flimsy, and I'll probably step it up to a heavy duty one.

The Ugly- -It's a lean, mean, routing machine. Solid black with a touch of gray. No pretty paint job like DeWalt or Porter Cable. But let's face it, who cares what color the thing is? It does the job and you'll save a pile of cash.

My 2 cents - Buy the Freud, take the cash you save and buy some bits, template guides, or a router table insert.

Happy Routing

4-0 out of 5 stars BANG FOR THE BUCK
After shopping for several weeks, I found this to be the best value for following reasons:

1) Most powerful- 3 -1/4 HP (15 amps!) motor
2) Soft start / electronic control
3) Height adjustment
4) Vacuum accessory
5) Sturdy 1/2" collet (instead of les robust 1/4" collet)
6) Spindle lock arrangement
7) Great for table mount

A comparable Porter Cable / Bosch machine with above specifications would cost about 50% more than what I paid, I believe.

On the negative side:

1) The finish does not compare with PC or Bosch.
2) The manual is extremely basic and is almost useless
3) There is no case
4) Pay attention to collet design during assembly this is NOT FLAW)
5) 6mm * 12mm metric screws are too short for table mounting (you need at least 6mm x 25mm long screws for table mount). Home Depot has it!
6) Not very convenient to switch between hand use and table mount (like the 2 HP Bosch 1617 combo set)

Even though I read several warnings about the collet, I still could not figure out how to slip the bit into the collet. After 30 minutes of frustration (the collet internal diameter measured less than .48" and will not receive a 1/2" diameter shank), I finally understood how to do it. Please see below:

1) Remove collet and nut from router

2) Push collet into collet nut with your finger till it snaps in completely. Now the collet springs open fully and is a tad over 1/2" diameter. The bit (shank) will slip in without a problem. In other words, make this assembly outside the router.

3)Push this collet / bit/ nut assembly into the router; tighten the nut with collet wrench (spindle lock mechanism will hold the spidle; you need only 1 wrench). I could do this very easily even with the router mounted inside the table. You only need to learn how to do this once.

If you are a practical type of a person (looks and frills do not matter) person, you will love this machine because it is a great value. Even though this is my first router (and I am a noice wood-worker), I am having fun with it. I know I do not have to upgrade to a bigger or more powerful machine (like with my other tool purchases). Though it weighs 12 plus pounds, it is fairly easy to do hand routing because it has very ergonomic handles and is well balanced. The switch is easy to use (in hand routing mode) and so is the height adjustment. The soft start feature is probably the best feature (I did not ruin even my very first trial piece).

Some people have compared the noise with a 747 taking off. Its more like a 747 cruising! Strangely, I found it most uncomfortable (audio level / frequency) at setting # 3 (out of 6). However, I do not believe this machine is any noisier than any comparable router (or some teenage drivers).

I have rated this machine at 4 stars (instead of 5) because:

1) poor cosmetics / industrial appearance.
2) poor manual
3) no case.
4) I do not know how well it is going to hold up over time
5) Not sure of availability of Freud accesories (unlike PC)

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. I got the router, router table (a must have, in my opinion) & a 12 piece (1/2") bit set for a marginal amount over the cost of a comparable Porter cable machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine
I have waited over a year to offer my opinion on this router so as to be as objective as possible. For backgound, I am a serious DIY. I have this machine mounted in my router table and love it. I opted for the Freud based on price and previous reviews I read. I have not been disappointed. I have cut raised panels with ease and would recommend this unit to anyone who has a need for this much power. Possibly the 3-1/4hp Porter Cable is better for a production shop, but for the money this router will serve the average guy very well for many years.

4-0 out of 5 stars With tuning, a great table router
I bought this router solely to be a table router. After a lot of research, it seemed that for the money, considering the hp you get, this was one of the top choices. I'ld been to a woodworking show recently, and found a few of the exhibitors demo'ing their router tables with the Freud router installed in them, so I knew it was a good candidate for the job.

I planned to install the Freud in a Rockler table, which has a nice 1/4" aluminum plate. The plate came predrilled for the router. The plate is high quality, with a good, stiff, flat surface to mount the router to.

When all the components came in, I gave them a thorough inspection. The first thing I did was to remove the plastic plate from the router bottom. You don't need it in a router table setup. I then matched the Rockler plate to the Freud router base. As another reviewer has commented, there was a problem with the flatness of the Freud base. The plate would "rock" and wobble when matched up to the base. Not a lot, but enough to bother me. I suppose you could just go ahead and attach the base to the plate with the three screws, but you would probably end up warping the plate a bit. I thought of sanding the base smooth on a sanding machine, or milling it, which would certainly give you a flat base. But then you wouldn't know for certain if the base were "true" to the axis of the router shaft. (In fact, I wasn't certain the base was true to the shaft to begin with.) You want the base to be true so your router bits mount truly perpendicular to your table, and don't run off at an angle, imparting an angle to your cuts.

I was lucky enough to find an excellent solution. (I guess I'm also lucky enough to have a metal lathe.) I was able to lock a 1/2" shaft in the router, chuck the other end of the shaft in the lathe, and turn down the bottom of the base plate so it was flat and true. I had to remove the handles from the router to give me enough clearance on my lathe, and tape up the electrical cord, but otherwise I didn't have to dismantle the router. I spun the router at relatively slow speed, and had no problem with dynamic imbalance, a bit to my surprise. I didn't have to remove a lot of metal, just enough so that I could see the whole base had been touched by the carbide cutter. The operation went very well, and the base turned out flat and a perfect fit to the Rockler plate. I also know that it is now true to the axis of the router shaft, since that was the axis about which it was turned. ... With the router mounted and installed on the table, I've found it has ample power for all the jobs I've done with it so far. I like the large elevation knob and the on/off switch. Both are fairly easy to access from under the table. If you wanted to get fancy you could mount a separate on/off switch to the bottom front or side of the table, and go with one of the various router elevation devices that can be accessed from the top of the table. But I haven't felt the burning need for either of these things yet. And yes the router is a bit loud, but not to the point that it bothers me. (And I certainly don't forget and leave it running when I'm through with a job!) I've had no problems using either the 1/4" or 1/2" collets.

If the router didn't need the tuning, I'ld give it a 5+ for value as a table router. Since it did require some, I give it a 4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tool
Pulled this tool out of the box and checked the collet right away. Mine was actually snapped into place already. I chucked up a 3/4 straight bit and set the edge guide, I set it to 5/8 deep and routed out 12 inches of red oak like it was butter. I haven't loaded this unti into my router table yet, but will shortly to make some raised panel doors. I have a feeling this router will throw the panel raising bit with no problem.

As for the base, mine is rock steady, sits flat and does not wobble. As for the edge guide, it is not the best in the world, but it does the job very well.

This is the best 3 1/4 HP router for under $.... I would suggest this router to anyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Table use
I bought this for use in my Bosch router table when I decided to upgrade it with the Router Raizer. The combination cost me just a bit more than the hulking machinery type raisers.

In the table it has all the power I need for hardwoods. The installation of the raizer was complex but went well with the excellent instructions. Lack of soft start not a problem in this application. Noise level is quite low considering the power.

Breaking down the router to install the Raizer left me impressed with the fit and finish of the parts. Although I have not used it as a handheld I think it's an excellent buy.

Bit removal is easy with the single wrench and shaft lock button. The insert for 1/4" bits works just fine.

Great value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power machine
Boy does this machine have power. I have the square base and don't have soft start but am real happy with everything else. I cut out stair steps with this big old boy and never lack power even with a large bit. You haft to hold onto it when starting it. Now I have it in the router table all the time and use it with the 1/2" dia. shaft bits so in hard wood the bits don't chatter. It really has been good for me and I'll be working it for a long time. I've made a bedroom set, 3 china hutches, matching buffet, computer desks, cabinets and all out of oak. Used it on some american elm and hard maple also. I use other brands at work and have this one in my home shop with 3 other brands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does all its supposed to do
I must admit after having posessed the 3612(see review) for as long as routers have been around, the 3612C was an unopposed choice. It has the same ergonomics and weight which is quite comfortable. On the other hand the variable speed and the same powerful motor makes it just what is needed for those large bits when fitted in a table. If you are looking for a router without frills and no pretentions of being anything but a work horse that will give you years of efficient, trouble free service this is what you need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bit Removal
Fine router. Hefty, with lots of power. The turret/adjustment system could be a little more refined.

I was having problems with bit removal, too, until I realized the trick (maybe I even read the instructions.) Loosen the nut, turn it by hand in the same direction a few more times, and you will feel the collet nut tighten again. Loosen it with the wrench a second time and the bit releases. No problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Router but...
There are a few points I'd like to bring up on the Makita router:

First, I like this Makita router but I have to agree with other reviewers that the bits are extremely hard to get out of the router. The routing capabilities are just fine but I dread at the end of the day trying to come up with new & inventive ways of getting the router bit out of the router.

Second, the router is heavy and a bit of a load to wield.

Third, it seems that virtually any router accessory is built for, or by, Porter Cable. If you are looking to "accessorize" your router then you may want to simply consider PC.

I am a fairly novice woodworker so take my observations for what their worth. Haven't used any other plunge routers. No "deal breakers" in here but just things to consider.

Happy routing! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When we bought our first router, we agonized over whether tobuy a fixed base or a plunge. Well, we went for the fixed base; infact, it was this model's predecessor, the Porter-Cable 690. But justas you'd imagine, we also ended up buying a plunge router later on. Hadthis deal been available back then, we'd have snapped it up. It offersone of the best basic fixed-base routers on the market with a secondbase that turns it into a plunge. The fixed base has P-C's neatmicrometer ring adjustment that lets you raise or lower your bit just ahairsbreadth. This set is ideal for mounting the fixed base in a routertable and lifting the body out to use in the plunge base, which, by theway, operates smoothly, has a nice chip deflector, and includes aconvenient plunge lock right next to the handle. It also features asix-position stop turret with a 2-1/2-inch plunge range. Best of all,it offers all the durability and smooth, reliable performance of theoriginal 690 model, with a little more horsepower and a new take on thedepth adjustment that prevents the motor from ever accidentally fallingout of the base. If you're looking for bells and whistles, shop up theline a little more, but if you're looking for a solid workhorse withgreat accuracy and reliability along with the plunge option, this is agreat deal. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
The Router has plenty of power. I used it on 3/4" birch plywood to cut out some cabinet door openings and it handled the task effortlessly, not even a splinter. The draw backs... the knuckle buster bit change system. I can't believe a company as good as PC can't / won't do better. Very disappointing. Invest in the D-handle base. It is by far the most convenient and SAFEST of them all. Dust flies everywhere, so have safety goggles (glasses are not enough).

3-0 out of 5 stars It's an average router in both fixed and plunge category
This was the second router(s) I bought that I mainly wanted for handheld use. The weight and power are good enough for what I wanted to do. But there are just things that I wish they could be better.
Both for the fixed and plunge base, it's very hard to center the bit when using guide bushing. The screw holes in the base plate are counter-sunk, that means there is no room to position the base plate when the screws are tightened. Later I found other router plates have flat bottom recessed screw holes that allow you to move the plate in order to center the bit. So I have to drill another set of holes that allow me to make adjustment if needed and I do. Two wrench operation is another drawback. Come on, PC, we are in the 21st century, there got to be something easier and better than that. Even the Craftsman router has spindle lock. The locking lever on the plunge base travels too long. When you lock it down, it almost hit the router body. And it does not seem to have a way to set it at another angle. Once you centered the bit at a certain depth, if you raise or lower the motor, the bit becomes off center by quite a noticeably amount that requires another adjustment. That means the plunge rods are in question.
Actually, I bought a second motor to use in the second base. All I can say about these routers are that they are reliable and does a decent job, but not top notch quality for precision work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little router at a good price.
Just like the other Porter-Cable power tools I own. Very dependable and well made. I have not had any problems with it. It runs smooth and has very little vibration compared to other brands I have used. It is light weight, versatile and easy to control. I have used it on doors, and in build cabinets. It has never let me down. I would recommend it. It is a great hand router. I say hand router because it is not designed for a table router. If you a looking for a table outer I would go with a more simple one and with more horsepower. I gave this four stars because nothing is perfect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best of both bases, but lacking....
The first router I bought was a Ryobi R160 1 1/2 hp with 1/4" collet. I was just getting into woodworking and trying to save money. I upgraded to the 693 about six months ago and overall am pleased but there are things I would change if I could.

The first is the lack of a spindle lock requiring two wrenches. The Ryobi had that feature and I miss it. Haven't busted any knuckles, but it is more trouble to change bits.

The biggest problem is the fixed base lock. It is worthless. P-C dropped the ball on this aspect. I have read around the net and found several others voicing the same thing-some have even removed the "locking tab" using only a regular nut and bolt in it's place!

I miss the trigger power switch on the handle, but this is due to the interchanging of bases/handles.

It has good power and is reliable so far. I bought another fixed base and mounted under my table saw extension for a router table, so for the versatility of 3 routers for the relatively low cost it is alright. I would like to buy a bigger router to mount permanently in the table, and I would buy P-C again. ... Read more

The DeWalt DW621K is the best plunge router in its class. So saythe editors of two leading woodworking magazines, PopularWoodworking and American Woodworker. And why not? It's thefirst professional-grade plunge router with built-in dust collection. Itruns quietly but efficiently on a powerful 9 amp, 2-horsepower motor. Its plunging action is smooth. It maintains variable speeds of 8,000 to24,000 rpm. Its controls are easy to work. It's mountable. It has asafety lock on its on/off switch for added protection. And the list goeson. Now, whether such features qualify the DW621K as the best is amatter of debate, but one thing is certain: this workhorse of a routeris going to carry its weight in virtually any shop or garage. --CarlThress ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Plunge Router!
Absolutely a great all purpose plunge router kit! As stated in other reviews this is not the best choice if you are focusing on primary use in a router table because of the on/off switch location. But, everything else is great! I'm very happy with the quality of construction and performance given me by this outer. This unit is definitely one of the best routers in its class. It has all the features one could possibly want. I recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking the plunge, the DeWalt 621.
Let me start by saying I don't believe a "perfect tool" exists, but the DeWalt 621 is close.

I admit, I'm not a spontaneous person when it comes to buying larger ticket item tools. This was no exception approx 18 months ago. I insist on good research. I tried to consider every possible use, quality, ergonomics, company reputation and overall long term investment along with price. First stop was here at Amazon.com, next Workbench Magazine (March/April 2001 issue, page 44.), followed by hands on inspection at local shops including Home Depot, Sears, Rockler and Tool Mart.

Out of a half dozen choices it came down to the DeWalt 621 or Porter Cable 7529. I did not like the electronics issues that plagued the P.C. (Porter Cable), and the fine depth adjustment rod is difficult to turn due to its very close proximity to the router body. Overall quality, ease of use and power were the priorities for my choice and then price. I would have gladly paid ...more for a mid-size router, if I felt it was truly better. I've heard from local woodworking shops that P.C. has addressed the electronics problems with the 7529 but with the higher cost (and weight) and lower usable power, the 621 was still the better choice. I decided to buy mine at Amazon.com as I did not have to pay shipping/handling or tax and I was assured of quick delivery. The base price here was competitive with other websites and stores and I received the edge guide attachment free.

When I received shipment the first thing that went through my mind was "Oh no, what happened!?" The outer shipping box had a huge 4" diameter hole in the right lower corner. Fortunately the router was encased in it's own box toward the rear of the shipping one. I immediately unpackaged and plugged it in. It's soft start electronics smoothly and quickly brought the router up to speed. The only noise heard was the soft whoosh of air from the motor's fan. It was music to my ears. Wheeew was the sound we both made!

I am a woodworder first and plastic/metal fabricator second. I wanted to really put this machine to test under a significant load. I am in the process of fabricating a 4" mini-table saw with a solid aluminum table top and needed to route two 1/8" deep by 1/2" wide miter grooves. Now obviously this is not likely to be recommended by DeWalt, but as I said, I wanted to test this machine under heavy load. A 1/2" shank ,1/2" straight carbide bit was fitted and the work began. The 621 sliced through the top without a whimper, slowing of the motor or excess vibration. The first wood project was a 1/4" roundover of redwood stock for some custom stackable shelves. The roundover was so effortless I thought I had missed the stock and had to turn off the machine and feel the edge with my finger to believe I had actually cut the surface. I was pleasantly surprised, the edge was perfect. Next job. 1/2" dados (using undersized plywood straight bit) to create tight fitting shelves in a birch cabinet followed by 1/2" x 1" deep mortises for tenon joints on a seperate redwood stand. The power and precision of this machine is impressive and with the lighter weight makes it nimble in the hands unlike the P.C. tank. The rack-and-pinion depth adjustment worked superb as did the three position turret, although six stops would be better. With power locked on and plunge raised, the 621 barely moved on my tabletop, a testament to it's ball bearings and smoothness. The fat spindle lock button was easy to use and much appreciated by my fingertip (and knuckles for those unfortunate without this feature).

The 95% efficiency regarding this routers ability to clear dust and woodchips you may have read is absolutely true! The large steel plunge rod (actually a hollow pipe) on the left of the machine is a cleverly designed vacuum tube (In this case different is better. Good job DeWalt!!). Attached to my shop vac, the suction works so well I have even used it to clear some of the excess dust on the table produced from my other machines. I just lightly pass the router over the dust and chips instead of detaching the vacuum hose from the router or blowing it away using my lungs.

As I said earlier I don't believe in any perfect tool and this router does have a few quirks. The base is different from most routers. Having two parallel straight edges gives it a smaller total surface area but also allows for easier edge guiding. The power switch is unusual to use and more complicated than a simple lever but is designed for safety as is the P.C. 7529 and like the P.C. just takes some getting use to. The plunge lock is also different from the others but easy to use without having to remove any fingers from it's grip so as to activate a lever.

The Pro's:

**Impressive Macro/Micro plunge adjustments
**Truly functional vacuum system (It really [has power]!)
**Smooth electronic controlled startup/feedback with ample power
**Good spindle lock and collett design
**Good quality of fit/finish

The Con's:

**Unusual base design with smaller surface area
**Unusual power switch (Designed for safety, but so has the P.C. 7529)

Summary: Maybe I like the 621 based on its ample merits or maybe because it's yellow color reminds me of my Tonka truck as a boy? It's definitely a very good tool. Or is it just an adult toy? Hmmm....

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad but!
I found this router worked well. However the Hitichi M12v 3-1/4hp. Super duty Electronic varriable speed 1/2" plung. A much better value. With alot more accessories and power for thoes large router bits. You compair I am sure you will agree. By the way I really like DEWALT tools,I have alot of them But some times there not the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great router!
I looked high and low to get the right power out of a router that wasn't too heavy. Considering it's a plunge router with 2 HP, I think this router feels perfect during use. The dust chute is very effective when used with a vacuum. The universal template attachment for the baseplate is very handy too for dovetailing and such. After shopping for nearly four months for the right tool, I would enthusiastically recommend this router for virtually any job you could throw at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good router that keeps getting better
I recently purchased the DW621 to replace a two year old DW621 that was stolen. I use the DW621 as a hand-held router

Lo and behold, the new router is different. The plunge springs are softer making it easier to control during plunge cuts.

The switch has been redesigned with a more positive lock. With the older router, it was too easy to bump the switch off.

The plastic chip guard has been redesigned and is much more effective.

The bushing holder is easier to install and fits better.

Both routers have variable speed and soft start. The balance point of the router is to the left of the bit making it less 'tippy'. The motor is quiet and smooth. The power is deceptive.

I replaced the stolen DW621 with a new DW621 because out of all the tools in my shop, the Dewalt feels the best in my hands. ... Read more

Here's a great choice for the serious woodworker, whether in freehand applications or mounted in a table. Porter-Cable took a second look at their popular 7529, 2-horsepower plunge router, and thus came the 8529. The name's not the only thing that's changed though. An above-the-table adjustment system works with a hex-shaped dial that reaches through your router table top and allows for adjustments as precise as 1/128 of an inch. A badly designed power switch has been replaced with a smart toggle switch, positioned just where it ought to be. We like the unique depth-stop mechanism, accessible without even taking your hands off the handles. For all its power, it's relatively quiet in a world of ear-piercing routers, another reason it's popular with home woodworkers. Two collets give you the choice of 1/2-inch or 1/4-inch bits, and the 2-horsepower motor won't whine no matter what you're routing. The body rides smoothly on the tubes, and ergonomically, it's a dream. Chip collection is good, too. This baby will meet all your routing needs. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Top Notch Router - Especially Good in a Router Table
When I decided that my old Craftsman 1/2 horsepower router wasn't meeting my needs any longer, I started shopping for a router principally to be used in a router table. Ideally, I wanted a setup to provide the functionality of the "router lift" systems, but preferably without the high cost. Not discounting the fact that I'd sometimes be using it outside of the router table, I also wanted the ability to precisely set the depth of cut. After doing a lot of research and selecting the 8529, I'm pleased to say that this router has turned out to be that ideal solution.

The 8529 has a very precise depth control adjustment. This is nice when working with the router freehand, because you can very accurately set your depth of cut, but where it really shines is when you have the router suspended under a router table. Using Porter-Cable's special long-shafted wrench, you can reach through the top of the router table and adjust the bit depth from above. This is accomplished by drilling a hole in the router mounting plate that aligns with one of the support columns. The support column is open on the bottom (the top with the router suspended upside down under the table) and has an internal adjustment screw that the special wrench mates with. A template is supplied in the owner's manual to help you position this hole in the mounting plate.

While the wrench itself has a friction-fit, sliding scale that you can use to accurately make precise adjustments to the bit height, I purchased digital readout from Rockler (www.rockler.com) that mounts to the 8529. The readout sits above the router table and provides readings in 1/64 inch increments as you adjust the bit height. It connects to the router by temporarily removing the normal height adjustment knob and mounting its sensor in its place (very easy to do). While probably not absolutely necessary since the Porter-Cable wrench provides its own adjustment scale, the digital readout provides some very nice functionality. For example, I can put a chunk of picture frame molding I've made in the past on the table, bring the bit up to meet the sample at what will be the finished height, zero the digital meter, and then lower the bit back into the table, letting the meter readings go negative in 1/64 inch increments. Then I start making passes with my lumber, bringing the bit up a little at a time until it hits the zero reading again. This gives me absolutely perfect replication every time.

This router is powerful, and the variable speed control is useful when I chuck up those larger bits to cut the picture frame profiles. The On/Off toggle switch is located so that you can easily flip it with the index finger of your right hand (assuming you are using the router freehand). The chuck is wonderful; unlike with my old Craftsman router, I haven't had a bit get stuck in it yet.

There was one little problem initially. When I got the router home and took it out of the box, the plunge mechanism was sticky. It just refused to smoothly slide up and down. But I put some graphite on the support columns, and after working it up and down some number of times, it started functioning nicely.

I cannot say enough nice things about the 8529. It's a wonderful piece of equipment, and if you're looking for something to use with a router table, this is the one.

3-0 out of 5 stars I've owned a 7529 for a couple of years now and...
it sounds like PC has addressed one of my complaints with this updated version. The old one had a ridiculous switch that was hard to use and has broken on mine. Other than the switch and above-the-table adjustments (now they think of it!), it looks to be the same machine, so I think my review is worthwhile. I disagree with the other reviewer about the plunge mechanism being stiff to operate, I think it works great and it locks securely. The depth fine tuning does take many turns, but I think that's the idea and it works. The one-tool bit changing is great, as is having 1/2 and 1/4" collets. The edge guide is well designed. My absolute favorite feature is the dust collection. It really works and makes non-through plunge cuts much easier because it keeps sawdust out of the groove if making multiple passes. I do have some complaints. As mentioned above, the switch on the old version was a poor design--doesn't matter now. The motor is a little wimpier than my Bosch 1619EVS, but adequate. The template guide holder requires a screwdriver and you have to eyeball it to center it--as another reviewer mentioned, this is not good if accuracy is a must. On the other hand, the PC style template guides are much nicer than the stamped sheet metal ones that Bosch uses, though Bosch has a better (tool free) system for installing the template guide. Lastly, the depth stop on this router is more elegant than the one on the Bosch, although the Bosch has a nice feature for stepping the depth down in fixed increments.

My recommendation for those in the market for a router is to limit your search to those with dust collection--it's worth it. I think the new PC 895PK looks more promising than this unit. I've never used the Dewalt, but it has some nice features as well. Although I have had multiple problems with the durability of Bosch tools, they make a great router, but they need to design a new unit with real dust collection, so I wouldn't consider Bosch for now.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm trying to like it...
After two years, I'm still trying to like this router but I have mixed emotions. The variable speed, the large hole in the base, the soft start, the dual on/off switches are all nice. And...the top woodworking magazines recommended it. But, it's top heavy and awkward, the base is relatively small compared to the size of the router, the plunge mechanism is "sticky" in its midrange, the fine adjustment is complicated to use, and the two-stage switch on the handle is difficult to engage. Also, with the small base and large hole, there isn't much base plate left to ride on the work piece when it's being used for handheld work. Coupled with the top-heaviness, this makes it extremely unstable and wobbly, especially at corners. Overall, it's a good router for the router table but not my preference for handheld work.
UPDATE: My review is for the 7529 model. Apparently, Porter Cable addressed some of the concerns noted during the model upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything is a trade off, this router bats a 1000
How do you make a router that is just as good under the table as above? You do what Porter Cable did in this router. The problem with under the table use is that trying to plunge a spring upside down results in lifting the table. Bosch did a good job with their 1619EVS, which has a spring defeat button, and a fine adjust knob. What Porter Cable did was create an adjust knob with the right amount of movement, that works independently of the plunge mechanism. It will only travel within the range of the adjusting knob while plunging. So when you want to do a 2 1/2" plunge, the adjuster should be all the way out. If it is adjusted down one inch, it will only plunge the last 1 1/2" of the plunge range.
Secondly, the challenge is to be able to do an under the table setting, run a sample, then be able to loosen the collet, tweak the adjust knob, and reclamp. The thing to avoid on lesser routers is that when loosening the clamp, it jumps completely away from a setting, so you are continually "gross" setting the adjustment. With the Porter Cable , the adjust knob takes it to your spot, then after the sample cut, you can release the clamp, and it holds your position, so you are able to fine adjust to the desired spot. The advantage the plunge routers have over the fixed base routers is that they have a smooth movement along rails. A fixed base router; for under the table use has a major sleeve the motor rides in, and when loosened tend to shift off axis slightly. Plunge routers ride perfectly smooth in the full plunge range, without any slight off angle at all. I have 7 routers, several Bosch's, Fein, Makita, and two Porter Cables, and this router is one industrial grade piece of equipment. Their 1 3/4HP models are not bad, but not on the level of the 2HP models. It has an industrial quality feel to it. It is super quiet, and runs smoothly. It will cut through 1-inch oak, with a 3/4" rounding over bit without slowing down. Combining the 2hp motor, and smart electronics, lays on just the right amount of power.
It's quiet, smooth, strong, and practical. Has the large base opening so it will accept the popular full size 3 1/2" raised panel bits. Don't let anybody talk you out of this one. It's an award winner. I plan on using mine under the table. No one router has everything over all the other routers out there, but this one comes close. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best out there
I just bought this router at HD at a awsome deal for 100.00 (managers special) could'nt pass it up. Knowing that it was a very good router anyway and a replacement of the 7529. I have read the reveiws of the 7529 and other routers as well, but didnt know any of the new features of the 8529. When I got it home to really look it over and try it out I was amazed of the feel and the conveinace of the power switch, locking lever and the height adjustments. I would recomend this router to anyone and if you get a good deal like I did that will be even better.
Good luck and happy woodworking.
