The 2 HP unit has plenty of power to be used in a router table a nd if you can only afford one router don't skimp for a few dollars more you get more power, variable speed and the bosch 2 HP variable speed router with the micro fine adjustments. I have had the 1617EVS fixed based for over 6 months and the extra cost to buy the plunge router attachment added up to more than this whole kit with the storage case costs.
I purchased this router and am very impressed with the smooth speed change and overall operation of the tool. It is physically more compact and better balanced than the Porter Cable equivalent tool. You will find that the Makita is most comparable in terms of quality, price, and features. But I have more experience with Bosch products and choose this. It took me a minute to figure out that the depth guide is also the release lever to release the motor from the base (to switch from the fixed to plunger base). On my first use I setup the deluxe edge guide as a guard, rigged the router into a right-sized hole in my work bench, and used it as a router table. I'll eventually buy a separate shaper, but this setup was accurate enough to shape window dividers. If you are considering purchasing the Bosch router table -- I'd advise buying a stand-alone shaper like the Jet JWS-18HO or the Grizzly G1035. Grizzly also makes a G0510 shaper with stand that is cheaper than the Bosch stand alone -- and you won't have to install and remove the router -- leaving your router free for free-hand work. Note that both the Jet and the Grizzly G1035 have router bit spindles available -- but that the G0510 does not and will only accept shaper bits, not router bits.

I haven't used the plunge base yet. I have never had a plunge base router and doubt I will ever have much use for the plunge base. I would rate this router 5 stars if the owners manual was
Last week I had a trip scheduled to Atlanta so I took my plunge base and motor by the Atlanta PC service center. The technician adjusted the locking mechanism and the plunge and now it seems to work great. The plunging action is smooth and the locking mechanism is crisp and no longer hangs up. I would suggest that any of you who are experiencing this problem to take it by the repair center. There was no charge for this and I am now happy with the plunge mechanism. ... Read more

Pros: Cons: I did originally purchase the Milwaukee Body grip and loved it before I picked up the DeWalt. The ONLY reason I did not keep it was because I wanted a plunge base and the "red" company does not make a PB for the 5616. I did not want to spend another $200 on a plunge router, and still not have the D-handle option. This is my first router and I could not think of a better kit for the DIY homeowner to have.
1.) The bases on all three are narrow enough to hold brass bushings to follow templates and it was a snap to start the dovetailing like I wanted. It does have soft start like the bosch. 2.) The D handle is nice too I use that the most. I have had some trouble with the bit coming lose on the 1/4" shank but only because I did not tighten it good from the excitement of having a new tool (no harm done). 3.)It does have variable speed which I love to control on various hardwoods. 4.)The other feature I like are the cord connectors which have their own plugs and are easy to connect. The ends of the cord twist and latch so you know they're in place. 5.)The plunge base has a vaccum port on one of the shafts that I have yet to use. 6.)The dial on the router bases are smooth and raises and lowers the motor with precision and locks tight. The cons: 1. When routing some stock you can really see the coils and bushings wind up the eletricity through the top vents which is normal but can be distracting, I'll get use to it 2.I like the one wrench bit removal with the push pin to hold the collet in place, but it takes some practice. (No more loose bits!) Overall the machine is excellent and I am happy with the purchase and performance. The cons are very minor. I would have to choose this machine over the bosch if it were my only router because of how veritile it is (dovetail & inlay bushing bases, three bases, vaccum attachment, and variable speed) but what serious woodworker can only get away with one router? Oh yeah, and I did get the free bits......nice too.

First off, this isn't made for handheld use if you plan on doing a lot of freehand work. Get a smaller, say 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 HP for that. I bought the plunge instead of the fixed base just in case I needed one in a pinch. At 21 pounds and with all the torque of a small diesel engine, it's somewhat of a chore to handle with any precision. I mounted mine on a router table and trust me, it will cut through anything you throw at it with ease. If you run large panel raising bits like I do, make sure you get the 7539 (variable speed) instead of the 7538. It will run these better at a slower speed. When you start up a 3 1/4" bit it sounds like a helocpter is hovering overhead. Much better and safer at 10 to 13000 RPM. Since I had already invested lots of $$$ in router bits, mounting this on a router table only made sense to me.

The mechanism used to defeat the plunge spring works flawlessly and is very easy to both engage and disengage if you read the instructions carefully. This feature is what sold me on the router in the first place, as it will spend most of its time in the router table. No need to buy a ... router lift accessory with this machine! It came with a fine adjust extension and can be easily micro-adjusted while under the table. I was also delighted to find a dust pick-up attachment in the package, I did not expect that!
I've been feeling braver recently, and after considerable research I purchased the Bosch 1619 along with a Veritas router table. Virtually all of the 3HP+ routers have more than enough power to do any work so the decision criteria had to be based on something other than sheer power. Important to me was ease of bit changes, runout and quiet(least noise). I haven't been disappointed, making raised panels in oak and walnut is easy-peasy with the Bosch 1619-Veritas combo.
For the most part, this 1619 resides under a router table. With the extended handle that comes standard with the router, under table adjustments are quick. Roll the large diamer handle between your hands, and the router can be moved up or down about 2 inches in 15 seconds. I've made about 40 raised panel doors with this router so far, and I really like the power it has. My panel raising bit is 2.5 inches in diameter. I remove about 5/16 in my first pass, and then take off 1/16 to get a nice clean surface. Taking 5/16 in one pass with this large bit does not bog this machine down. The on/off switch is built into the handle which makes for convenient free-hand operation. The switch is difficult to reach when the machine is mounted under the table, but an auxillary switch on the router table solves that problem. I also like the built in lock on the spindle. Bits can be changed with only one wrench. ... Read more

Bought at a sales rep demo and got the dust collection base thrown in for free. It is better than nothing, but I wish I would have looked closer at the Dewalt set-up. Bottom line, does the job, but falls a little short of my high expectations for PC tools.
Other than the above issues the tool is well constructed and the soft start is really nice. If PC corrected the above issues I would rate this tool at 5 stars.

+ Warm-up starting, quiet, comfortable handles, excellent control, and precision. - Somewhat top heavy and the storage box is huge. I would recommend this to all users reguardless of skill level
This is my first "serious" router. I have woodworker neighbors who let me use their Porter-Cable and Hitachi routers, and when the time came for me to upgrade to a real tool my choice was between thhis and the P-C combo. One of my friends had just bought the P-C combo, and I got a chance to handle the DeWalt tool at a woodworker's store. Something about the DeWalt appealed to me over the P-C, so I took the plunge (no pun intended) and it arrived within a week. First impression is flawless fit and finish. The accessories in the kit were fairly standard, but the true test was whether it could cut wood. I ran a few dadoes in plywood and it seemed capable, but a real test was needed. The same week I bought this tool I bought a Rockler router table, and real test was cutting rails and stiles for cabinet doors. It passed with flying colors, quieter and smoother than I expected, and it didn't balk at taking full depth cuts with a raised panel bit. The plunge mechanism is smooth and easy to use. I have seen so many different depth adjusters on plunge routers, and there really isn't much to differentiate between models in setting plunge depth. I'm fine with the DeWalt method. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this kit to anybody. The base is sized to accept standard Porter-Cable bushings, and the fixed base hole pattern fits all PC690 baseplates etc. Maybe Santa will bring me a D-Handle so I can leave the fixed base in the router table.

The dust collection attachment worked great until it broke. I see why it's made of clear plastic, to enable viewing the bit at work, but it sure breaks easily, and I haven't found a glue that will repair it permanently. So, I'm now thinking about adding the 621 - 2hp unit to my collection because of it's built in dust collection system. DeWalt should do something similar to the 625.
I am not at all disappointed with the power or handling characteristics considering the size of the machine. The 3hp motor effetely drives large bits. The low centre of gravity makes this big machine relatively easy to handle compared to other 3hp routers and the plunge action is very smooth. The on/off switch is convenient, although a switch which turns the machine off when released would be far safer. The plunge lock mechanism can be somewhat difficult to use for someone with smallish hands (for a guy), but I'm now used to it. The soft start and electronic control means that you don't get that jump when starting up and you get an even cut under varying loads. However, it's use under a router table can be rather frustrating. I have made my own table with a 6mm (~1/4") supported acrylic surface. It's simple and should work well with the 625, especially with the fine adjuster, made for when the router is table mounted. However, even at 6mm the router cannot push the bits high enough at times. This is incredibly frustrating and it's tempting to overextend the bits in the collet, which isn't good for the collet, the bits or for safety. Using a 4mm slot cutter on multiple repeat pieces should be a breeze if you use a table with stops. Unfortunately my bit, of average length, does not extend far enough using the table due to the inadequate travel of the 625. Cutting 24 identical pieces topside then becomes infuriating. I also recently wanted to do some template work. Most template guide adverts, including those shown here, say that the universal 1 3/16" template guides fit DeWalt routers with an adapter. I live in Cape Town and have been in touch with the local dealer and emailed DW in the USA, asking where I can get an adapter. So far, after numerous attempts to get an answer from DW, I have yet to receive a reply from the USA and the importers of DW here cannot get an answer from the UK. Getting good service with courtesy should be a consideration when buying anything. Lack of after-sales service would seriously make me consider options other than DeWalt should I be in market for a new router. Overall I like the DW625, but it has serious limitations with regards to table mounting and using template guides.
I have made some raised panel doors with no problem, the variable speed is great to slow it down for the big bits. The three turret stop is nice except when mounted upside down, the stops have a tendancy to loosen and fall out, then get stuck in my dust collection and so on. Using it free hand is no problem despite 14 pounds and 3 horses. The large handels and low center of gravity make it easy to control. My only gripes are these. Thats it, other than that the router is perfect. If you don't have a router, this is the way to go, it has virtually no limits. My next one with the 621 for my free hand work and dovetails, but for now, this one dose it all.

Pros: Cons: Overall: I truly enjoy using this router. I recommend this model for hand help operations.
Ultimately, you can make a perfectly centered baseplate with a lexan blank, a drill, a few bits and some patience, so the problem was not insurmountable if you intend to use the router freehand or in a table that accepts user made baseplates. The Jess'em router lift unfortunately does not. For me that is ok since I intend to use another router for that application (it is too much of a pain to mount/dismount). Like other users, I have noticed that the baseplate threads strip out easily, so don't get carried away when you tigthen them.
1.) THE BASE is too small - It has a tendency to lean forward even when I move the router S-L-O-W-L-Y 2.) POWER - This router has a dissapointing motor. When it's cranked up to it's highest level I think it's weak when cutting through SOFT pine 3.) HANDLES - The lockdown handle has a tendency to work loose as I'm using it. UNFORTUNATLELY, tightening it too much will destroy it 4.) THE VACUUM - it's abililty to attach to a vacuumm is a good idea but FAILS in the end. 5.) COLLET CHANGES - the plastic cover for the vaccuum always gets in the way when you're changing bits C-O-N-C-L-U-S-I-O-N .... i REALLY dislike my Dewalt router... I don't think the reviewers in woodworking magazines know what they're talking about.. they're always giving this router good reviews!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review The variable-speed dial on this router is easy to access and offers precise microadjustments, and onboard electronics keep motor speed constant. This model also offers the soft-start electronics we've come to expect on high-end power tools: power comes on smooth and quickly ramps to full speed. As a result, the big 3-1/4-horsepower motor doesn't torque the tool from the user's grip. Of course, aside from its use as a handheld router, this tool is designed to be mounted to a router table; it is powerful enough that we feel comfortable using it for many tasks we might normally assign to the spindle shaper. We find Freud's router particularly user-friendly when we're making adjustments: the sliding shaft lock, plunge lock, and quick-release depth stop are all conveniently located and easy to operate. Overall, this is a very good tool at a very good price. --Tim Block Features Reviews (57)
The Good- -This router is the Least expensive of all the heavy duty routers. -It has several standard features (height adjustment knob, 1/4" reducer collet, dust collection, edge guide, etc.) that will cost extra on the other brands like DeWalt, Porter Cable, etc. -It's relatively quite. -It has power to do any job, and then some to spare. -The on/off switch is large and easily within reach. -There are 3 adjustable depth stops which allows you multiple depth stops at the turn of the stop. -Variable Speed & Soft Start The Bad- -The mounting screws (for router table plates like Rousseau) are a little short for me, and they're a metric thread. I thought the threads were 1/4" x #20, but I was soon proven wrong. This isn't the end of the world, it just means I have to run down to the hardware store for some longer screws. -This router is pretty heavy. I guess I can't complain much here, as mine will be mostly be table mounted. I think the Freud is lighter than most of the other brands in this power range. -The plunge action is a bit stiff. I can't complain much as this is a big router, meant for big jobs. You probably won't be doing any 1/16" freehand rounding over work with a big router like this. -The plunge lock lever works opposite what I'm used to on my old router - to lock the plunge, you lift the lever and to unlock, you lower the lever. Again this is not a major concern, just something I have to get used to. -The chuck wrench that comes with the router looks a bit flimsy, and I'll probably step it up to a heavy duty one. The Ugly- -It's a lean, mean, routing machine. Solid black with a touch of gray. No pretty paint job like DeWalt or Porter Cable. But let's face it, who cares what color the thing is? It does the job and you'll save a pile of cash. My 2 cents - Buy the Freud, take the cash you save and buy some bits, template guides, or a router table insert. Happy Routing
1) Most powerful- 3 -1/4 HP (15 amps!) motor A comparable Porter Cable / Bosch machine with above specifications would cost about 50% more than what I paid, I believe. On the negative side: 1) The finish does not compare with PC or Bosch. Even though I read several warnings about the collet, I still could not figure out how to slip the bit into the collet. After 30 minutes of frustration (the collet internal diameter measured less than .48" and will not receive a 1/2" diameter shank), I finally understood how to do it. Please see below: 1) Remove collet and nut from router 2) Push collet into collet nut with your finger till it snaps in completely. Now the collet springs open fully and is a tad over 1/2" diameter. The bit (shank) will slip in without a problem. In other words, make this assembly outside the router. 3)Push this collet / bit/ nut assembly into the router; tighten the nut with collet wrench (spindle lock mechanism will hold the spidle; you need only 1 wrench). I could do this very easily even with the router mounted inside the table. You only need to learn how to do this once. If you are a practical type of a person (looks and frills do not matter) person, you will love this machine because it is a great value. Even though this is my first router (and I am a noice wood-worker), I am having fun with it. I know I do not have to upgrade to a bigger or more powerful machine (like with my other tool purchases). Though it weighs 12 plus pounds, it is fairly easy to do hand routing because it has very ergonomic handles and is well balanced. The switch is easy to use (in hand routing mode) and so is the height adjustment. The soft start feature is probably the best feature (I did not ruin even my very first trial piece). Some people have compared the noise with a 747 taking off. Its more like a 747 cruising! Strangely, I found it most uncomfortable (audio level / frequency) at setting # 3 (out of 6). However, I do not believe this machine is any noisier than any comparable router (or some teenage drivers). I have rated this machine at 4 stars (instead of 5) because: 1) poor cosmetics / industrial appearance. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. I got the router, router table (a must have, in my opinion) & a 12 piece (1/2") bit set for a marginal amount over the cost of a comparable Porter cable machine.
I planned to install the Freud in a Rockler table, which has a nice 1/4" aluminum plate. The plate came predrilled for the router. The plate is high quality, with a good, stiff, flat surface to mount the router to. When all the components came in, I gave them a thorough inspection. The first thing I did was to remove the plastic plate from the router bottom. You don't need it in a router table setup. I then matched the Rockler plate to the Freud router base. As another reviewer has commented, there was a problem with the flatness of the Freud base. The plate would "rock" and wobble when matched up to the base. Not a lot, but enough to bother me. I suppose you could just go ahead and attach the base to the plate with the three screws, but you would probably end up warping the plate a bit. I thought of sanding the base smooth on a sanding machine, or milling it, which would certainly give you a flat base. But then you wouldn't know for certain if the base were "true" to the axis of the router shaft. (In fact, I wasn't certain the base was true to the shaft to begin with.) You want the base to be true so your router bits mount truly perpendicular to your table, and don't run off at an angle, imparting an angle to your cuts. I was lucky enough to find an excellent solution. (I guess I'm also lucky enough to have a metal lathe.) I was able to lock a 1/2" shaft in the router, chuck the other end of the shaft in the lathe, and turn down the bottom of the base plate so it was flat and true. I had to remove the handles from the router to give me enough clearance on my lathe, and tape up the electrical cord, but otherwise I didn't have to dismantle the router. I spun the router at relatively slow speed, and had no problem with dynamic imbalance, a bit to my surprise. I didn't have to remove a lot of metal, just enough so that I could see the whole base had been touched by the carbide cutter. The operation went very well, and the base turned out flat and a perfect fit to the Rockler plate. I also know that it is now true to the axis of the router shaft, since that was the axis about which it was turned. ... With the router mounted and installed on the table, I've found it has ample power for all the jobs I've done with it so far. I like the large elevation knob and the on/off switch. Both are fairly easy to access from under the table. If you wanted to get fancy you could mount a separate on/off switch to the bottom front or side of the table, and go with one of the various router elevation devices that can be accessed from the top of the table. But I haven't felt the burning need for either of these things yet. And yes the router is a bit loud, but not to the point that it bothers me. (And I certainly don't forget and leave it running when I'm through with a job!) I've had no problems using either the 1/4" or 1/2" collets. If the router didn't need the tuning, I'ld give it a 5+ for value as a table router. Since it did require some, I give it a 4.
As for the base, mine is rock steady, sits flat and does not wobble. As for the edge guide, it is not the best in the world, but it does the job very well. This is the best 3 1/4 HP router for under $.... I would suggest this router to anyone. ... Read more

In the table it has all the power I need for hardwoods. The installation of the raizer was complex but went well with the excellent instructions. Lack of soft start not a problem in this application. Noise level is quite low considering the power. Breaking down the router to install the Raizer left me impressed with the fit and finish of the parts. Although I have not used it as a handheld I think it's an excellent buy. Bit removal is easy with the single wrench and shaft lock button. The insert for 1/4" bits works just fine. Great value for the money.
I was having problems with bit removal, too, until I realized the trick (maybe I even read the instructions.) Loosen the nut, turn it by hand in the same direction a few more times, and you will feel the collet nut tighten again. Loosen it with the wrench a second time and the bit releases. No problem.
First, I like this Makita router but I have to agree with other reviewers that the bits are extremely hard to get out of the router. The routing capabilities are just fine but I dread at the end of the day trying to come up with new & inventive ways of getting the router bit out of the router. Second, the router is heavy and a bit of a load to wield. Third, it seems that virtually any router accessory is built for, or by, Porter Cable. If you are looking to "accessorize" your router then you may want to simply consider PC. I am a fairly novice woodworker so take my observations for what their worth. The first is the lack of a spindle lock requiring two wrenches. The Ryobi had that feature and I miss it. Haven't busted any knuckles, but it is more trouble to change bits. The biggest problem is the fixed base lock. It is worthless. P-C dropped the ball on this aspect. I have read around the net and found several others voicing the same thing-some have even removed the "locking tab" using only a regular nut and bolt in it's place! I miss the trigger power switch on the handle, but this is due to the interchanging of bases/handles. It has good power and is reliable so far. I bought another fixed base and mounted under my table saw extension for a router table, so for the versatility of 3 routers for the relatively low cost it is alright. I would like to buy a bigger router to mount permanently in the table, and I would buy P-C again. ... Read more

I admit, I'm not a spontaneous person when it comes to buying larger ticket item tools. This was no exception approx 18 months ago. I insist on good research. I tried to consider every possible use, quality, ergonomics, company reputation and overall long term investment along with price. First stop was here at Amazon.com, next Workbench Magazine (March/April 2001 issue, page 44.), followed by hands on inspection at local shops including Home Depot, Sears, Rockler and Tool Mart. Out of a half dozen choices it came down to the DeWalt 621 or Porter Cable 7529. I did not like the electronics issues that plagued the P.C. (Porter Cable), and the fine depth adjustment rod is difficult to turn due to its very close proximity to the router body. Overall quality, ease of use and power were the priorities for my choice and then price. I would have gladly paid ...more for a mid-size router, if I felt it was truly better. I've heard from local woodworking shops that P.C. has addressed the electronics problems with the 7529 but with the higher cost (and weight) and lower usable power, the 621 was still the better choice. I decided to buy mine at Amazon.com as I did not have to pay shipping/handling or tax and I was assured of quick delivery. The base price here was competitive with other websites and stores and I received the edge guide attachment free. When I received shipment the first thing that went through my mind was "Oh no, what happened!?" The outer shipping box had a huge 4" diameter hole in the right lower corner. Fortunately the router was encased in it's own box toward the rear of the shipping one. I immediately unpackaged and plugged it in. It's soft start electronics smoothly and quickly brought the router up to speed. The only noise heard was the soft whoosh of air from the motor's fan. It was music to my ears. Wheeew was the sound we both made! I am a woodworder first and plastic/metal fabricator second. I wanted to really put this machine to test under a significant load. I am in the process of fabricating a 4" mini-table saw with a solid aluminum table top and needed to route two 1/8" deep by 1/2" wide miter grooves. Now obviously this is not likely to be recommended by DeWalt, but as I said, I wanted to test this machine under heavy load. A 1/2" shank ,1/2" straight carbide bit was fitted and the work began. The 621 sliced through the top without a whimper, slowing of the motor or excess vibration. The first wood project was a 1/4" roundover of redwood stock for some custom stackable shelves. The roundover was so effortless I thought I had missed the stock and had to turn off the machine and feel the edge with my finger to believe I had actually cut the surface. I was pleasantly surprised, the edge was perfect. Next job. 1/2" dados (using undersized plywood straight bit) to create tight fitting shelves in a birch cabinet followed by 1/2" x 1" deep mortises for tenon joints on a seperate redwood stand. The power and precision of this machine is impressive and with the lighter weight makes it nimble in the hands unlike the P.C. tank. The rack-and-pinion depth adjustment worked superb as did the three position turret, although six stops would be better. With power locked on and plunge raised, the 621 barely moved on my tabletop, a testament to it's ball bearings and smoothness. The fat spindle lock button was easy to use and much appreciated by my fingertip (and knuckles for those unfortunate without this feature). The 95% efficiency regarding this routers ability to clear dust and woodchips you may have read is absolutely true! The large steel plunge rod (actually a hollow pipe) on the left of the machine is a cleverly designed vacuum tube (In this case different is better. Good job DeWalt!!). Attached to my shop vac, the suction works so well I have even used it to clear some of the excess dust on the table produced from my other machines. I just lightly pass the router over the dust and chips instead of detaching the vacuum hose from the router or blowing it away using my lungs. As I said earlier I don't believe in any perfect tool and this router does have a few quirks. The base is different from most routers. Having two parallel straight edges gives it a smaller total surface area but also allows for easier edge guiding. The power switch is unusual to use and more complicated than a simple lever but is designed for safety as is the P.C. 7529 and like the P.C. just takes some getting use to. The plunge lock is also different from the others but easy to use without having to remove any fingers from it's grip so as to activate a lever. The Pro's: **Impressive Macro/Micro plunge adjustments The Con's: **Unusual base design with smaller surface area Summary: Maybe I like the 621 based on its ample merits or maybe because it's yellow color reminds me of my Tonka truck as a boy? It's definitely a very good tool. Or is it just an adult toy? Hmmm....
Lo and behold, the new router is different. The plunge springs are softer making it easier to control during plunge cuts. The switch has been redesigned with a more positive lock. With the older router, it was too easy to bump the switch off. The plastic chip guard has been redesigned and is much more effective. The bushing holder is easier to install and fits better. Both routers have variable speed and soft start. The balance point of the router is to the left of the bit making it less 'tippy'. The motor is quiet and smooth. The power is deceptive. I replaced the stolen DW621 with a new DW621 because out of all the tools in my shop, the Dewalt feels the best in my hands. ... Read more

The 8529 has a very precise depth control adjustment. This is nice when working with the router freehand, because you can very accurately set your depth of cut, but where it really shines is when you have the router suspended under a router table. Using Porter-Cable's special long-shafted wrench, you can reach through the top of the router table and adjust the bit depth from above. This is accomplished by drilling a hole in the router mounting plate that aligns with one of the support columns. The support column is open on the bottom (the top with the router suspended upside down under the table) and has an internal adjustment screw that the special wrench mates with. A template is supplied in the owner's manual to help you position this hole in the mounting plate. While the wrench itself has a friction-fit, sliding scale that you can use to accurately make precise adjustments to the bit height, I purchased digital readout from Rockler (www.rockler.com) that mounts to the 8529. The readout sits above the router table and provides readings in 1/64 inch increments as you adjust the bit height. It connects to the router by temporarily removing the normal height adjustment knob and mounting its sensor in its place (very easy to do). While probably not absolutely necessary since the Porter-Cable wrench provides its own adjustment scale, the digital readout provides some very nice functionality. For example, I can put a chunk of picture frame molding I've made in the past on the table, bring the bit up to meet the sample at what will be the finished height, zero the digital meter, and then lower the bit back into the table, letting the meter readings go negative in 1/64 inch increments. Then I start making passes with my lumber, bringing the bit up a little at a time until it hits the zero reading again. This gives me absolutely perfect replication every time. This router is powerful, and the variable speed control is useful when I chuck up those larger bits to cut the picture frame profiles. The On/Off toggle switch is located so that you can easily flip it with the index finger of your right hand (assuming you are using the router freehand). The chuck is wonderful; unlike with my old Craftsman router, I haven't had a bit get stuck in it yet. There was one little problem initially. When I got the router home and took it out of the box, the plunge mechanism was sticky. It just refused to smoothly slide up and down. But I put some graphite on the support columns, and after working it up and down some number of times, it started functioning nicely. I cannot say enough nice things about the 8529. It's a wonderful piece of equipment, and if you're looking for something to use with a router table, this is the one.
My recommendation for those in the market for a router is to limit your search to those with dust collection--it's worth it. I think the new PC 895PK looks more promising than this unit. I've never used the Dewalt, but it has some nice features as well. Although I have had multiple problems with the durability of Bosch tools, they make a great router, but they need to design a new unit with real dust collection, so I wouldn't consider Bosch for now.
