2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to operate
The switch on this drill is difficult to operate. Myself and two other guys had problems with it. The drill is either locked on or off. If the bit jambs you can not quickly stop the drill or for any matter it is difficult to stop. This is a problem and will probably burn up the motor when it is jambed and attempts to turn. I guess if Hitachi makes a better switch or even a simple trigger it would be a great drill. I am returning mine tomorrow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smooth Operator
I wish my car ran as good as this drill. This is my first Hitachi tool and its the smoothest running drill I own. And I have lots of different brands. Plenty of power, enough to drive 3" screws into pressure treated lumber with ease (while being in a tight space). The controls took a little getting used to. It has an on/off switch with a speed dial at the bottom. But it's very easy to shut off, just tap the switch. It's got the old fashioned keyed chuck, but after going over it, you can get into tighter spaces with it (especially with the side handle off). Keyless chucks are bigger so you can grab hold of them. Whether your drilling or driving, this is the perfect tool for tight spaces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well made, with power to spare!
I'd made due with my 3/8" drill in the past and borrowed whenever I needed larger, but I knew that wouldn't cut it for this summer's project. The time had come to bite the bullet and invest in a substantial heavy-duty drill. I'm happy to report that the project is nearly complete and the DA4031 has delivered in spades. I chose the Makita over the DeWalt Timberwolf and Milwaukee HoleHawg because of the added power (10 amps) and features. The Makita's spade handle adjusts 90 degrees to any position with an Allen wrench that is stored cleverly in the handle. The auxiliary rubber-grip pipe handle screws into either side. Best of all, the switch handle rotates a full 90 degrees in either direction at the press of a button. These combined features make the drill comfortable to hold in any position. That's good, because at 12 pounds, this is a serious piece of equipment...

Now back to the project. In building my deck, I affixed the ledger board to the house with twelve ½" x 10" galvanized lag screws (3.5" of ledger board, 2.5" of wallboard, 10" of sill beam). I pre-drilled each hole to depth with the DA4031, then (using a ½" drive socket adapter) turned each lag screw in flush (final tighten by hand). These were done one after another, on a hot day, with no sign at all of fade from the drill. The final tighten required a ½" x 18" breaker bar, so I know turning the lags in was no cakewalk! I then used a ½" x 12" self-feed auger bit to drill sixteen holes through 9" of lumber for the lag bolts on the cantilever support. The DA4031 has also drilled all the holes for my railing support posts. Final verdict? Nothing on this project came close to stressing this drill. I couldn't be more pleased with the quality of construction, ergonomics, or power. I will probably never come close to using this drill to its full potential, but I like having a quality tool with more than enough power to get any job done. The DA4031 has both these bases well covered. ... Read more

Milwaukee's close-quarters drill is designed to make drillingin tight and hard-to-reach spaces as easy as possible. The drill has astout 3.5 amp motor that provides trigger-controlled variable speedsfrom 0 to 750 rpm. It also comes with a heavy-duty keyed chuck. Toprevent loss, a chuck key attaches to the cord via a rubber tie. Thetwo things that make this drill so effective in close-quarters work arethe 55-degree chuck angle and the molded grip situated directly behindthe chuck--two features that combine to put the user's pushing forcedirectly behind the bit. This is key, of course, because you tend tohave less strength to offer when you're holding a drill in a tight orhard-to-reach space. By making efficient use of the strength you do putinto the operation, Milwaukee's drill makes the job that much easier.Lastly, we also really like the convenient location of the triggerswitch, even if it is sometimes a little too easy to pull before youintend to. This drill comes in handy for electrical work and cabinetry.Milwaukee also makes a 3/8-inch chuck with a higher top speed.--Brian Trinen ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars LOW Torque Applications ONLY
Purchased this product instead of Magnum 3300 because I only had a few hundred holes to drill for running wire and figured that afterward it would be more applicable to a variety of home rennovation uses. High torque application made mincemeat of the helical gears. If you plan to run a lot of wire or pipe, buy the right tool for the job-not, as I did, this product. I will try to find a rebuild kit for the gearing--and buy the big guy as well. I have also used the little drill to work under sinks and etc and have been pleased. I just think that there should be a warning on the outside of the box "NO LARGE DIAMETER BITS OR AUGER BITS."

1-0 out of 5 stars Close Quarter Drill not worth it!
My wife purchased a close-quarter drill as a Christmas present in 2001. One year and 3 months later, it no longer works. Apparently it can't handle 3/4 and 1 inch bits. I called Milwaukee to get service, and they tell me that I abused their heavy duty drill. I personally would not recommend this drill to any contractor that needs a tool that will last.

3-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this drill...
I used this drill for doing the low voltage wiring for my house ... it worked great for two weekends and is now shot. I was probably using bits that were too big for the drill (5/8" and 1" auger bits), but it would bind up and (eventually) I think the gears wore out. Now it just sounds like it's ratcheting and it won't drill into anything with a bit bigger than 1/8" or so.

While it worked it was great... handy around the corners and worked like a champ. As long as you don't need something that is truly heavy duty (ignore what it says on the box), this is the drill for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I expected from Milwaukee
Switched from Porter Cable to Milwaukee recently and I am glas I did. This drill performed better than expected. I used this in floor joists with three quarted spade bits for wire and boy, did it do the job. It was very fast and was comfortable to boot. Great Job, Milwaukee, keep up the good work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fits in tight spots and is powerful and light
This drill is a great alternative to the more expensive and beefier 1/2" right angle drill from Milwaukee. The angle of the drill head to the body is not perpendicular as you can see in the picture and that makes for great comfort in using the tool plus it is very light. I had to reroute some electical wire and this is the tool to cut new holes into the wall studs. I only gave it 4 stars due to the chuck being somewhat difficult to spin by hand due to a small surface with which to grip and the fact that it didn't turn very easily. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Will pay for itself after one wiring job.
If you are going to be doing any serious wiring around your house buy one of these drills, don't argue with me, don't cavil and whine that's it's too expensive, just buy the drill. Now Drilling between joists, or up into wall cavities, tasks which are a complete pain in the neck with a standard drill are almost effortless with the 3002. I had to run a bundle of wires through 12 floor joists, with this drill it took me about 15 minutes to drill all of the holes I needed and run the wires. Like every other Milwaukee product the drill is very well built and durable and if taken care of will last forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee Builds'em Right
I use this drill at work on a daily bases and it has never let me down. The extra long handle is great when your dilling overhead. This model has a higher rpm than the standard right angle dill kit. The higher rpm's make drilling wood a lot easier. I only wish Milwaukee would have put the Quik-Lok cord on this model. No tool is perfect but this one comes close. ... Read more

Product Description

HOW TO DRILL IN "IMPOSSIBLE" PLACES - Space is at a premium in aircraft design as shape and weight are critical. Airplanes are riveted together. So, thousands of holes need to be drilled in difficult locations without scratching or marring the surface. Engineers had to design a versatile "chuck-less" drill attachment that could reach into very confined areas. Threaded drills were the answer. The benefits are significant. Threaded drills eliminate the need for a chucking mechanism that, in turn, allows drilling to be done in very small areas (less than 1" X 2"). Chuck slippage is all but eliminated while the precision mating angle between threaded drill and drive spindle insures concentricity. Drill change times are reduced, an exact working drill length is insured and the chance of marring or scratching the work surface is greatly reduced. And, other threaded tools can also be used for close-quarter work. As such, the kit provides amazing versatility. The Chucking Spud allows conventional use of the threaded drills. Using the Threaded Extension with the Chucking Spud provides the utility of an expensive set of "deep reach" extension drills. Used with the Angle Attachment, the Extension allows work over or around obstacles. And, the compartmented folding pouch provides compact toolbox or wall-hanging storage. Plus, other Tight Fit tools and accessories for close-quarter work are available. The Tight Fit® Drill Kit can be purchased on a "Risk Free" trial basis. You will be able to make repairs and installations in near-impossible locations. Often, with its first use, the kit pays for itself in time and frustration saved. For example, the ability to drill-out a broken bolt in a tight spot can save hours. And, with care and maintenance, the kit should provide many years of trouble-free use. Suitability: Great for home, work, car, boat, RV and other repairs, installations and restorations. Note: drills comply with National Aerospace Standard 907B. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The real deal!
I researched all the options for right angle drills before deciding on the Makita based on it being variable speed, reversable, and well made. I was surprised how solidly this unit is! (Unlike the Dewalt which I found to be somewhat chessy feeling). I bought this unit to install molding on the flat and backer blocks for crown molding above kitchen cabinets. With only 5" of clearance above the cabinets this drill still made easy work of it. I can already think of about a dozen other areas I will be using this tool often.
By the way, be extremely careful while changing bits NOT to depress the trigger. I did, and it nearly took my finger off!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great compact drill
This drill is great, I love the fact that it is variable speed as well as reversable. Plus the way the paddle switch is set up it is easy to activate yet doesn't easily go off unintentionally. I recently used mine to drill out the back most manifold bolt in the head of a 454 chevy. It worked great for that. I could barely get my arm down there to reach the area but getting the drill in there and working with it was absolutely no problem. I owned a Dewalt dw160 and even though it is slightly more powerful it is no comparision as far as ease of operation and overall tool design. Even the chuck on the Makita is 10 times easier to use than the Dewalt. The Makita is all open all the way around while the Dewalt has small slots you have to try and fit the chuck key through to reach the chuck.

4-0 out of 5 stars MAKITA DA3000R RIGHT ANGLE DRILL
AFTER A RECENT PURCHACE OF THE MAKITA DA 3000R RIGHT ANGLE DRILL I CAN SAY THAT I AM SATISFIED. AFTER DECIDING AGAINST THE SIMILAR DEWALT MODEL BECAUSE IT WAS NON-REVERSING, I CHOSE THE MAKITA. OWNING A FEW MAKITA POWER TOOLS I THINK THAT THAY MAKE A VERY GOOD AND DURABLE PRODUCT. THE FORWARD/REVERSE SWITCH IS A LITTLE CHEAPLY DONE, BUT THE RPM LIMITER THUMBSCREW IS A GREAT IDEA. ALL SAID AND DONE IT'S A HEAVY DUTY DRILL, ANOTHER GOOD PRODUCT BY MAKITA. JUST WISH IT CAME WITH A TOOL CASE FOR THE PRICE.

2-0 out of 5 stars under powered
I bought this drill based on positive reviews I found here, and liked the idea of it being reversible. I was disappointed when it didn't have sufficient torque to drive a 5/8 auger bit through a floor joist. Went out and bought a Dewalt which had no problem. The Dewalt isn't reversible but doesn't need to be for drilling since it has enough power to drill through without getting bound or stuck. I don't know if I got a defective drill (other reviewers said they've drilled joists), or whether it's just an underpowered tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars why did I wait so long
After fighting ceiling fan and can light installs on the ground of floor of 2 story houses for longer than I care to remember, using a right angle attachment to my 3/8 drill punching holes in floor joist for wiring. I finally realized there must be a better way. After purchasing the Makita right angle 3/8 drill these go much faster. You can get the entire unit in the ceiling in a 6" can light hole and with extentions and an electricians bit I have made it through 3 joists on 16" centers. Saves lots of drywall repair and a much cleaner and faster job. This has become my favorite drill and I use it for most general applications as well, The quality and ergonimics are very good. Although it is not a high amp drill it powers through most material with no problem. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice right angle drill for tight spaces, not heavy duty
I got this drill because I needed to drill into a very tight space, and this drill had the short clearance I needed. It works great for drilling or screwing things down in tight spaces. That's what it was designed for.

It is not a heavy duty drill. The metallic head, which contains the right angled gearbox, gets hot if you drill continuously for long periods. When my general purpose Black and Decker drill broke one day, I started using this drill for a bunch of stuff, like sanding and grinding, as well as drilling, and boy, did the gearbox get hot, almost too hot to touch.

The paddle trigger is also not one of my favorites. Even now, it still feels awkward. The trigger was designed for safety, not functionality. To keep you from accidentally starting the drill, you have to push/slide the paddle downward before it will unlock and depress and start the drill. All I can say is that this mechanism sure works great at making it difficult to start the drill, whether accidentally or deliberately!!!

There is a knob to adjust the maximum speed of the drill, which is a nice feature to keep you from accidentally overdrilling/ovescrewing something. Especially since the paddle trigger is a bit hard to use, it helps to set a limit on the maximum speed that you start off with.

As a tool for fine craftwork, well, it's a bit too heavy for fine detail work - you need big hands to grip the thing comfortably. A Dremel tool it's not. For heavier duty projects, I find that my RotoZip high speed drill works better because it's lighter amd more maneuverable than this Basch drill, and faster and more powerful at cutting and trimming larger projects.

But, if you need a drill for tight spaces, this one works just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Geat Little Right Angle Drill
I have been looking at small right angle drills for along time and couldn't decide on which one to buy. I decided on the Bosch because I have other Bosch tools and they have served me well. I am glad I went with this drill it has great power for driveing 3" screws in areas that a regular screwgun or cordless drill can't get into. I used it to drill holes in stud walls for electical and copper pipe useing 1" and 1 1/4" spade bits with plenty of power. This drill isn't meant to be a hole hawg for heavy duty plumbing or electircal jobs, but for light to medium duty jobs it's a great drill for areas that can't be reached with a regular drill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mighty Mite Right Angle Drill
I've wanted one of these drills for over a year, but couldn't bring myself to spend the money. But, I broke down during the Bosch tool sale last summer and got one. Glad I did too, because there's no limit to what it will do. I've used it to install plumbing and wiring and duct work in places where no other drill or driver will fit. I drilled one inch holes for water line with a spade bit through a double plate between floors in no time. My 8 amp Porter-Cable right angle drill would never go into the places this little Bosch drill does. It's great for installing and removing gutter hangers, too. I love the dial speed control, especially for running screws. Don't overload this tool. With 3.8 amps, it has medium power, but the size and shape make up for that. It's true beauty is it's close quarters capabilities. This tool is a must have for remodelers and handy persons. ... Read more
