    4-0 out of 5 stars Bosch 11224VSRK
I bought the 11224VSR to replace my old 11212VSR, which I have owned for about ten years. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the new 11224 is made in Germany, especially since these days so many power tool manufactures are shifting operations to Mexico, China and Taiwan. Even the free promotional SDS-Plus bit set that was included with the kit when I bought it is German made.
The 6.9 Amp motor and stop-rotation feature make the 11224 excellent for light chipping and scaling with 3/4"or 1-1/2"wide chisels respectively. It is reversible, so it is ideal for installing and removing light to medium duty small masonry fasteners. The 7/8" solid bit capacity gives it the ability to make a hole in concrete large enough for pass 1/2" EMT through. With the available, impact rated 1/2" locking geared chuck adapter, you can use the tool for drilling in wood or metal in the rotation only setting or with standard straight shank percussion masonry bits in the hammer/rotation mode. The adapter is not something that I use all the time but was glad to have had it on several occasions because it kept me from having to stop what I was doing and run out to the truck to grab a regular 1/2" drill just to make a couple of holes in a metal enclosure or 2X floor joist.
I also use it with the 1-1/8" and larger Bosch thin-wall core bits with an 11-7/8" shank for drilling through ceramic, granite and marble tile floors and poured concrete walls to run conduit and pipe. The Bosch thin-wall core bits are sometimes hard to find locally and are also expensive, but are well worth it because they make very clean holes and substantially increase the capacity of this small hammer.
In addition, my larger Bosch 1-1/2" spline-drive hammer with a standard heavy-wall core bit just hits to hard and will almost always damage ceramic or expensive granite and marble tiled floors.
The only thing I don't care for is the plastic storage case that comes with the 11224 hammer. It is flimsy and just lets everything inside fly around.
It doesn't have the sliding tray for smaller bits up to 6" and separate compartment for longer bits and attachments or the secure latches of the superb metal case made by Merriam Manufacturing that came with my older Bosch 11212. Plastic cases have do their merits and are sometimes superior to metal cases for storage of some power tools but in my opinion, they are generally not a good idea for most rotary hammers, which usually require many different sizes and lengths of bits, attachments and boxes of fasteners to be used and stored with them.
Other than that one complaint, I feel that the 11224 is easily the best and most versatile 7/8" SDS rotary hammer on the market and would have no problem recommending it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool!
Great tool! I've used mine for drilling in concrete and wood - and it works superbly for that - but this weekend I used it to chip out some old floor tile and thinset. With a 1 1/2 inch chipping bit the old tile didn't stand a chance, and for taking out the thinset, it was particularly awsome. Key words here are 1) Gets the job done, 2) One tough tool, and 3) Very little vibration.

    1) After a short learning curve, (Attack tile from the corners and where two tiles meet. Attack thinset at 90 degrees to the trowel grooves.) the tile and thinset basically flew off of there.

    2) Tough tool. I ran the tool for about two hours straight before lunch and another two hours straight after lunch with only short breaks to clear debris. It never even whimpered, and was going as strong at the end as when I started. I noticed that it got a little warm, (So what did you expect?) and I kept checking it, but it never overheated. The Bulldog lives up to its name for toughness.

    3) Very little vibration. Of course there is some. It is a hammer-chipper after all. However, for the record, the vibration is minimal - far less than my string trimmer, for example. After four hours working this thing, my hands and arms were never "numb." I was impressed. You can chip all day and not get beat up! The Bulldog is also a comfortable dog.

The ability to adjust the angle of the bit is a very positive feature. You can adjust it to what ever angle that is most effective or comfortable. The Bulldog is fairly light weight too. It won't wear you out just carrying it around, but it still packs a wallop.

As I mentioned, drilling with or without the hammer feature is awsome. You can set if for drill only, drill and hammer, or hammer only. This is one 5 star tool!

Furthermore, the Bulldog is very moderately priced. I learned long ago that cheap tools are no bargain - but good tools at a bargain price are! This is a good tool, and it doesn't cost that much either. By the way, I had another brand rotary hammer - about the same size - that comes dressed in yellow - sold it. This Bosch is leagues ahead of that other one.

Can it do everything - maybe not, but just about everything. I do have one of those big elephant-like rotary hammers for the REALLY BIG jobs, but 9 times out of 10, I reach for the Bosch Bulldog - and it gets the job done.

By the way - When using this tool or any other rotary hammer, wear safety glasses, a GOOD dust mask, ear muffs, and gloves. Don't skimp on any of those! I know there are some macho types out there that think that stuff is for wimps. Well listen, Bubba - You ain't bullet proof. The "wimps" will be out there making money while you are in the emergency room or getting fitted for hearing aids. Put on the safety gear! It's extremely important!

Good tool - quality tool. I like it. and I think you will too.

06/2004 - Quick edit - I like this tool so much that when the opportunity came along to acquire a used one, I bought it and now have two. Why? Just because it is a great tool, and I can have one in the truck and a back-up at home. JM

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 ++ You wont find anything Better
Performance is outstanding. I need to rely on a good rotary hammer so I grab for this tool everytime--no question about it. It's lightweight, fast-drilling and durable! what more do you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars slabb
this is not a toy hammedrill like the others are selling. I tried the one's for a hundred dollars less, and returned them all. the bits are great, single purpose and look like they'll last years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tool of this type and size? Maybe
This is the best tool I have used or owned (Hilti and Milwaukee being the others) for drilling small holes for anchor bolts in concrete. Fairly cheap, lightweight, fast-drilling, not too noisy, durable (shop's model still runs like a champ although heavily used and very ugly), and best of all it's very well damped so it doesn't transmit much vibration to the user.
One caveat: in case there's anyone else on the planet who would consider using this tool and an SDS chisel bit in stop-rotation mode for quickly defrosting a freezer, be warned it will do that and much more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not that scary!
Recently, I have to do a tought plumbing job. I was worried if I was going to be able to jack-hammered a 4 inch concrete floor. We went to a tool rental place and got the Bosch Brute Hammer. In the beginning I thought "is going to be a scary kind of job". But I was wrong. In a few hours I was able to complete the whole job. The vibration was not bad after all. It is not a tool that I need on a daily basis, but is was a good help for me that day. Also, the hand truck was great with all the tools orderly in place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool-Worth every Penny
If you want to save time, back aches, etc. get this tool. I wish I would have sooner. Highly recommended. It's very dependable

5-0 out of 5 stars dependable and gets the job done.
I have used this tool to demo a flagstone/concrete patio and about 80 feet of sidewalk. I first tried the sledgehammer/prybar route, but that was too slow and tiresome. I got the job done by myself in less than 8 hours with this tool. It is quieter than gas/air powered hammers, but I still wore ear protection. It is easy to operate and not very fatiguing-the most tiring part is picking it up and setting it down. It is heavy, but I could lift it into the trunk of my car by myself. With 2 people lifting it is a breeze and the cart makes transporting it very easy. I ran it hard all day and it never complained- and this was a pretty beat up rental tool. I highly recommend this tool if electricity is available-it is much more convenient than gas and compressed air hammers. Plus it is powerful and durable enough for all but the biggest demolition jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended-Worth every Penny!
My company rented this a few times and we can't live without it, so the company bought one and everyone on the site loves it. I have several contractor friends on other sites and they too rave about the Brute hammer. This hammer really is a life saver. When you use this tool it sure cuts down on the time it takes to complete a job. Be sure to get the cart, it sure makes life easier. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is where "hammer drills" start
If you are done drilling 3/8" tapcons and need to drill a real hole in concrete you have to put the cordless down. I did a lot of checking before I bought a hammer drill because I wasnt experienced with these drills. I expanded my work to include exterior foundation work. You need a quality hammer drill to do the job right. This Bosch SDS rotary is perfect for drilling those 1" holes in concrete or brick,or chiseling out brick. If you are not going to be drilling 2" holes through your foundation, you dont need any more drill than this.Anything smaller than this is a waste. This Bosch is a work horse and is still easy on the hands.

2-0 out of 5 stars okay for drilling
I am a contractor who uses a rotary hammer a few hours per week. I bought the Bosch 1 1/8 inch sdsplus rotohammer about 3 weeks ago, after a reconditioned and used milwaukee unit stopped hammering (after about three weeks). I was pretty happy, at first.
A few days ago, I checked out some of the reviews on here, and grew concerned about the chuck loosening up. Sure enough, when I checked it out, it moved about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch with a 12 inch bit. I took it back.
B.T.W., I contacted Bosch, and they basically said that SDS-Plus hammers aren't designed for much chipping. I do chip alot, so I am probably going to take thier suggestion and get an SDS-Max hammer. I may still get a Bosch.
If you are planning on buying this hammer for drilling, it is probably a great tool (and the case is very well organized). If you plan on doing any chipping besides some very light chipping, I suggest getting an SDS-Max or spline drive. You may be disappointed in any SDS-Plus hammer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big Bang For The Price
This drill has seen 100's of holes, & keeps going strong. Would highly recomend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for chipping brick
I just completed stripping approximately 5,000 brick off my house (we're rebricking). I looked into renting a tool for this job and I realized I could justify the purchase of my own tool for the amount of work I needed to do. As I wanted a tool that could be used for more than chipping/stripping brick, I began to lean toward the "combination" rotary hammers. I had a tough time finding any reference to their use for stripping brick. After much research, I settled on the Bosch 112326VS mainly because the SDS+ tools are in the middle of the size range (SDS MAX are larger) plus the price was acceptable. I chose the 11236VS over the 11224VSR (7/8" SDS+) simply because I hoped that the slightly bigger tool would be a benefit in chipping. So I'm here to state that I had very good success with the Bosch 11236VS for this purpose. Incidently, I used the 1-1/2" chisel (also by Bosch) which still has plenty of life left.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality again
Poor quality again, January 25, 2004
Reviewer: Handyman, Jack of All Trades from Hendersonville, NC US
This model of the Bosch line of rotary hammers is a failure. Less than a days work and the chuck is so sloppy as to make the tool impractical to use. I am returning it to my home improvement center. It has nice features but just is not durable in chipping mode. The tool was used to chip out 9 cinder block house vents. After the fourth vent the chuck became extremely sloppy. I hope Bosch can fix this problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality
Do yourself a favor, invest in this hammer, you will be glad you did! It is designed and built to last. The BEST of the BEST! Performance is outstanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very effective when used correctly
I purchased this unit after test-renting a Bosch 11316 Demolition Hammer in order to dig 25 very deep tree holes in the hard, California clay soil where I live. The 11316 was massive overkill for the job (I used it on 30-40% power all day), and often sunk deep into the cement-hard soil just under its own weight!

The 11241 is a fantastic tool - it digs with a clay spade at a moderate pace, dramatically reducing workload for terraforming (moving a lot of dirt, as I did with a retaining wall), and for trenching, digging, and moderate-duty demolition.

BEWARE - it takes 3-4 hours of use before it really *works*. Out of the box, brand new, you will swear this thing is broken. Read the manual - it vaguely refers to a 5 hour break-in period. Trust me, not much happens for the first 2 hours - I recommend finding drilling applications.

So far, I've trenched, drilled holes in concrete, done terraforming, and some serious digging for tree planting and
other gardening tasks. The weight of this unit is ideal for the application, and the power is just sufficient. (5 stars would be reserved for a bit more power - it takes a while to get through some applications where old roots are in the way - the 11316 cut through them like a hot knife through butter).

I've yet to try this unit on concrete - I suspect it will do a credible job, but not great, due to its moderate power output.

I have the clay spade, acaling chisel, and two bull points of different lengths. All work very well.

One superior aspect of this unit over the 11316 monster - the vibration isolation is really nice in the handle. My wrists can tolerate 2-3 hours/day of this work, where 2 hours of the 11316 caused me a week or so of serious aching.

I am trilled with this hammers performance. hands down Bosch is the Best!! Bosch craftmanship is superior, no complaints what so ever. I highly recommend

5-0 out of 5 stars Light & Hard Hitting
I am no stranger to midweight electric demolition hammers. I have owned Bosch hammers in this class and I have used dozens of rentals, mainly Kango. I can't rate it against the competition brands such as Makita or Hitachi because I have not used them, but I can tell why I love this hammer.
It is light and compact; seeing the case you would not think that it was a demolition hammer. I stress that it is smaller and lighter than other hammers of similar capability that I have used. By smaller I am I mean shorter by several inches. Desipte its size and weight it hits hard and I am judging this by extensive experience with hammers in this class.
SDS max demolition hammer bits are becoming easy to find in retail hardware and lumber yards and this can mean a lot if you break a point off early in the day on a critical job.
You don't have to turn the tool off when you are not engaging the tool into the work, at least , there is no mention of this in the manual and it doesn't have the conventional trigger switch. In the past I have found that the switches often wore out due to the constant on off needed to prevent damage to the hammering mechanism. Now I just leave it running when lifting the tool to a new position, or in the case of clay spade digging, rocking the tool to break up compacted soil.
I wish I could say that it is long lasting and rugged but I have only put a few hours of use on it; so far so good. At least I can say that the feel of it inspires my confidence that it will be a performer over time and my experience with Bosch tools in other catagories has been good.
To sum it all up, smaller and lighter translates into less problem and work for me. Hard hitting means good production and more money for me. SDS tool availibility means I can get new bits easily when I need them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skeptical
When I ordered the demolition hammer I thought I was ordering the much larger and powerful "brute breaker" demo hammer. I was very upset and considered sending the tool back but the tool was half the price of the brute breaker hammer and I thought I'd give it a try. It has proven to be all I ever needed for the jobs I have around my home. I've broken up 4" concrete with ease. Dug 16" deep footers and 30" deep fence post holes in minutes vice hours. The main reason I purchased it was for the ground around my house because it is mostly "hardpan" clay that is nearly impossible to dig in with normal hand tools. This demo hammer is the right tool for my needs and, unless you need to tear out something tougher than 4" thick concrete, it may be the back and money saving tool for you too.

    5-0 out of 5 stars builder/remodeler
I just got this one and I love it. Very, very good power to weight ratio. Punches thru 4 inch slabs easily. If you have to do this kind of work, this is an impressive tool. It took a little longer going thru a 6 inch stem wall, but much less toll on the body and ears than using a 90 lb pneumatic jack in a horizontal position. If you have to do some demo work under the house, this is the only way to go. It can take apart brick work easily. The shovel attachment goes thru hard soil like it's warm butter. I used the earlier verision that belonged to a friend and now I wonder why I waited so long to get this one. It comes with a plastic case which is OK, but I would have much prefferd a metal case for this brute. ... Read more

DeWalt's D25203K is the tool you need to make holes 3/16- to 7/8-inch in concrete. It's powered by a heavy-duty, variable speed 7.5 amp motor with dust-sealed ball bearings for long life. For super versatility, it switches easily between three modes of operation: hammer drill, drill only, and hammer only. Set it to hammer, and you're ready to chip off materials like splattered mortar. Switch to drill, and you're set to drive bits and fasteners. It's packing 2.3 foot/pounds of impact energy, but the rubber molded handle makes a tough job more comfortable. Need to back out a fastener? Just switch to reverse mode. Should a bit jam, you're covered by the factory-set clutch that's ready to reduce any sudden, high-torque reaction. The side handle can be positioned anywhere on its 360-degree rotation, a great plus for left-handers as well as awkward workspaces. Because there's no battery to lug around, it's only 6 pounds, so it's easy on the user and feels good in the hand.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars TKO in the first round
I bought this rotary hammer for drilling in grout holes for rebar and anchor bolts and some other misc. holes in concrete. It is a very good tool for someone who has a lot of varied tasks but dosen't work the tool everyday. The clutch is a wrist saver, the bits are harder to find than SDS Max and the price is right. But the tool went down in a matter of hours, and given Hitachi's impossible to locate parts, I'm shopping for a SDS Max Hilti or Bosch. No tool is a good deal if it shuts your job down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
I bought mine a few months ago, and I love it. I use it for breaking up granite boulders by drilling a line of holes and splitting the rock with stonemasons' 'feathers and pins'. The thing weighs quite a bit so it's not the best for small holes in masonry walls. It seems to work best when held vertically or close to it. ... I've not had any problems with it, and it does as good a job as my friend's Hilti which cost him more than twice as much. The spline-shaft bits aren't always easy to find. My local Home Depot has a few, but mail-ordering is usually necessary to find a specific size. I haven't tried to use it as a jack-hammer yet, so I cannot confirm or refute toolpig's evaluation of when it's used as such. In any case, I think I got good value on this tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough and dependable
Like most Hitachi tools , this is very well engineered. It stands up to all kinds of abuse. Mine ran for years drilling all sizes of holes in old hard concrete. I also used it for chipping which is hard on roto hammers. They don't have a lot of power for breaking concrete as this is not their intended primary use. So when you do use them for breaking , they have to run a lot longer than a demolition hammer would. It has pretty good power for drilling though. I bought mine used and had it for five years before replacing it recently. I went to SDS max which is currently replacing spline drive in the large rotary hammer market. It is a tighter mechanism which transfers more of the hammering power to the bit , resulting in faster drilling performance. If you have a lot of spline bits , this would be a good tool to buy. If you are starting from scratch , I would recommend the SDS max hammers from Hilti , Bosch or milwaukee

4-0 out of 5 stars good value for the price
after a year of use and abuse my hitachi is still going strong.it drills fast and easy and in hammer mode drives ground rods and does light demolition effortlessly.i prefer the spline shank drills and accesories over the little sds shank bits but i do use an adaptor for the slightly cheaper sds or taper shanks in the smaller sizes.industrial machinery installation is tuff on tools but the hitachi DH38YE not only came through with flying colors but outlasted a much more expensive brand. ...
