I learned the bulk of my woodworking at Palomar College, which is where I was introduced to Porter-Cable routers. We were taught to always unscrew the base when we changed bits, so it's natural for me to do it that way. Their main workhorse is the Porter-Cable 690, and anything that will stand up to the kind of abuse that 150 students per day can dish out... I first purchased the 690 because of that, and when I made the ultimate router table in the Jigs and Fixture class, I graduated to the 7518. Because of the weight (18 pounds), I have never left the motor in the router table, as some of my fellow students found that doing so tended to deflect the insert plate over time. I do leave the base attached at all times, but when I'm finished with the router table, I unscrew the motor, blow out all the sawdust from both motor and base, then store the motor in a cabinet. There are no scratches on the motor, and it has always been very easy to adjust the depth of the bit. I think those who are having problems with sawdust gumming things up over time could resolve this by simply taking off the motor and blowing out the sawdust when they're finished using it. Changing bits has never been a problem because of the procedure I was taught at Palomar. I merely lift the insert plate with attached router out of the router table, unscrew the base and change bits. Pretty simple, really. I have mostly used the 7518 in my router table, but there have been a few times when I've needed it for hand-held operations. The only drawback then is the weight, but all that power comes at a cost, I suppose. Actually, the much-maligned (and deservedly so) Sears router does pretty well for edge routing because of the light weight and those big handles. After LOTS of use I can honestly say the 7518 looks like it's brand new. I firmly believe that I will be doing woodworking for the next thirty or forty years, and I have every confidence that my original Porter-Cable routers will still be in use, having, at the very most, had the brushes replaced. It's a superb router. Buy it with confidence.
Aside from the collet problem, this appears to be a first rate router. I bought it without comparing it to other routers in it's class because I have several Porter Cable tools, and I trusted their quality. I can't say I have the same level of trust anymore. In the future, I'll definately make some serious comparisons before I buy another Porter Cable product. ... Read more

The 2 HP unit has plenty of power to be used in a router table a nd if you can only afford one router don't skimp for a few dollars more you get more power, variable speed and the bosch 2 HP variable speed router with the micro fine adjustments. I have had the 1617EVS fixed based for over 6 months and the extra cost to buy the plunge router attachment added up to more than this whole kit with the storage case costs.
I purchased this router and am very impressed with the smooth speed change and overall operation of the tool. It is physically more compact and better balanced than the Porter Cable equivalent tool. You will find that the Makita is most comparable in terms of quality, price, and features. But I have more experience with Bosch products and choose this. It took me a minute to figure out that the depth guide is also the release lever to release the motor from the base (to switch from the fixed to plunger base). On my first use I setup the deluxe edge guide as a guard, rigged the router into a right-sized hole in my work bench, and used it as a router table. I'll eventually buy a separate shaper, but this setup was accurate enough to shape window dividers. If you are considering purchasing the Bosch router table -- I'd advise buying a stand-alone shaper like the Jet JWS-18HO or the Grizzly G1035. Grizzly also makes a G0510 shaper with stand that is cheaper than the Bosch stand alone -- and you won't have to install and remove the router -- leaving your router free for free-hand work. Note that both the Jet and the Grizzly G1035 have router bit spindles available -- but that the G0510 does not and will only accept shaper bits, not router bits.

Amazon is the only place that I found that had it listed for under $300. Plus the free shipping is great. It only took 7 days to receive it. Now I'm looking for a router to dedicate to the table. I know I'll buy it from Amazon I just can't make up my mind.
The cast iron extension is a significant improvement over the stock stamped steel wings that came with my Dewalt saw (bigger, flatter, smoother). I haven't made any sawdust yet with this setup but so far it has been a tremendous value when you think about how much you actually get (fence, router plate, cast iron extension wing). Tim Malone wrote a review that said the ProMax was the perfect fit for his Dewalt 746 saw. I just talked with someone from BenchDog and they had some concerns that the ProMax would have interference problems because my DeWalt is a left tilting saw. Tim (or anyone for that matter) can you tell me if your Dewalt was a left or right tilt saw. I was not aware of Dewalt making the 746 in a right tilt version. If there is anyone out there that has installed the ProMax on a left tilter, please let me know. Thanks in advance,
The wing is boxed well and though there was a little damage to the box, the contents were in good shape. The first thing I noticed when beginning assembly is the screws and bolts were packed in some random order. I recommend dumping them all into a ziplock bag before starting. This will save you some time having not to disassemble or look for other bags. The wing is well coated with oil. I used simple green to remove the residue. After it was clean, I assembled it to the saw. Fit up was good and this wing is flat (more flat than my saw). The fence is quality and went together with no problems and the insert leveled with no issues. Now for the reason I gave this product a 4 star rating. The wing is supplied with hooks to hold the fence when not in use. These hooks share the same hole as the attachment screws for the miter gage. The problem is that the holes were not tapped all the way through, they stopped about 1/8" shy. I have three options, to tap the holes myself, return the wing (now that it is fully assembled), or not use the hooks at all. The last option is not an option as far as I am concerned. I will speak with Bench Dog customer service tomorrow to see what they can do. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, they shorted me one lock washer as well. Update 4/23/04, I moved this from a 4 star to a 5 star due to their customer service. I called and they sent me a tap to complete the threads. The were willing to replace the wing but I have done a lot of metal work in the past so finishing the hole was no problem. They were aware of the problem and were very appologetic. I used this on some cherry and boy is it nice. I would recomend this to anyone who has a space constrant in their shop.

Last week I had a trip scheduled to Atlanta so I took my plunge base and motor by the Atlanta PC service center. The technician adjusted the locking mechanism and the plunge and now it seems to work great. The plunging action is smooth and the locking mechanism is crisp and no longer hangs up. I would suggest that any of you who are experiencing this problem to take it by the repair center. There was no charge for this and I am now happy with the plunge mechanism. ... Read more

Pros: Cons: I did originally purchase the Milwaukee Body grip and loved it before I picked up the DeWalt. The ONLY reason I did not keep it was because I wanted a plunge base and the "red" company does not make a PB for the 5616. I did not want to spend another $200 on a plunge router, and still not have the D-handle option. This is my first router and I could not think of a better kit for the DIY homeowner to have.
1.) The bases on all three are narrow enough to hold brass bushings to follow templates and it was a snap to start the dovetailing like I wanted. It does have soft start like the bosch. 2.) The D handle is nice too I use that the most. I have had some trouble with the bit coming lose on the 1/4" shank but only because I did not tighten it good from the excitement of having a new tool (no harm done). 3.)It does have variable speed which I love to control on various hardwoods. 4.)The other feature I like are the cord connectors which have their own plugs and are easy to connect. The ends of the cord twist and latch so you know they're in place. 5.)The plunge base has a vaccum port on one of the shafts that I have yet to use. 6.)The dial on the router bases are smooth and raises and lowers the motor with precision and locks tight. The cons: 1. When routing some stock you can really see the coils and bushings wind up the eletricity through the top vents which is normal but can be distracting, I'll get use to it 2.I like the one wrench bit removal with the push pin to hold the collet in place, but it takes some practice. (No more loose bits!) Overall the machine is excellent and I am happy with the purchase and performance. The cons are very minor. I would have to choose this machine over the bosch if it were my only router because of how veritile it is (dovetail & inlay bushing bases, three bases, vaccum attachment, and variable speed) but what serious woodworker can only get away with one router? Oh yeah, and I did get the free bits......nice too.

First off, this isn't made for handheld use if you plan on doing a lot of freehand work. Get a smaller, say 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 HP for that. I bought the plunge instead of the fixed base just in case I needed one in a pinch. At 21 pounds and with all the torque of a small diesel engine, it's somewhat of a chore to handle with any precision. I mounted mine on a router table and trust me, it will cut through anything you throw at it with ease. If you run large panel raising bits like I do, make sure you get the 7539 (variable speed) instead of the 7538. It will run these better at a slower speed. When you start up a 3 1/4" bit it sounds like a helocpter is hovering overhead. Much better and safer at 10 to 13000 RPM. Since I had already invested lots of $$$ in router bits, mounting this on a router table only made sense to me.

Bought at a sales rep demo and got the dust collection base thrown in for free. It is better than nothing, but I wish I would have looked closer at the Dewalt set-up. Bottom line, does the job, but falls a little short of my high expectations for PC tools.
Other than the above issues the tool is well constructed and the soft start is really nice. If PC corrected the above issues I would rate this tool at 5 stars.

SETUP: Table alignment was acceptable out of the box. PROs and CONs: I purchased this tool for use as a router table rather than a shaper, and it seems satisfactory for this purpose. However, the overhead blade guard did not fit in the hole provided in the table, nor did the replacement Delta sent me. The usable vertical spindle movement is only about 1-1/4 inches, limiting the use of longer bits. Finally, the small size of the adjustment knob makes adjusting the bit height more of a task than it need be.
Notes: For a hundred dollars more you can buy a Rousseau router plate, Bosch 1715EVS router, build your own table, Incra Ultra Lite jig (use as router fence - it's great with a slight modification - see review on amazon). I've used this setup without any trouble at all at least twice a week. Please, please, please don't waste your money on Delta's worthless router/shaper.

Three problems: (1) The printed manual doesn't say a word about mounting and adjusting it in this way, even though that's the main benefit of the 890 series design vs the cheaper, better-built workshorse 690 series. You have to figure it out for youself. (2) It uses a plastic rack-and-pinion gear to adjust the depth of cut, which feels less solid than rotating pin alignment of the 690 series. (3) When you release the lever that locks the depth of cut setting, the router wobbles a little, so you have to re-check the height carefully after the router is locked in place. We're used to rock-solid tools from P-C, not plastic gears and wobbly housings. Plus side: It's quieter; the RPMs can be adjusted; it's safer, faster and much easier to change bits -- no more skinned knuckles! It comes with a CD that shows more about how to use it. Not really four stars, but better than 3.

+ Warm-up starting, quiet, comfortable handles, excellent control, and precision. - Somewhat top heavy and the storage box is huge. I would recommend this to all users reguardless of skill level
This is my first "serious" router. I have woodworker neighbors who let me use their Porter-Cable and Hitachi routers, and when the time came for me to upgrade to a real tool my choice was between thhis and the P-C combo. One of my friends had just bought the P-C combo, and I got a chance to handle the DeWalt tool at a woodworker's store. Something about the DeWalt appealed to me over the P-C, so I took the plunge (no pun intended) and it arrived within a week. First impression is flawless fit and finish. The accessories in the kit were fairly standard, but the true test was whether it could cut wood. I ran a few dadoes in plywood and it seemed capable, but a real test was needed. The same week I bought this tool I bought a Rockler router table, and real test was cutting rails and stiles for cabinet doors. It passed with flying colors, quieter and smoother than I expected, and it didn't balk at taking full depth cuts with a raised panel bit. The plunge mechanism is smooth and easy to use. I have seen so many different depth adjusters on plunge routers, and there really isn't much to differentiate between models in setting plunge depth. I'm fine with the DeWalt method. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this kit to anybody. The base is sized to accept standard Porter-Cable bushings, and the fixed base hole pattern fits all PC690 baseplates etc. Maybe Santa will bring me a D-Handle so I can leave the fixed base in the router table.

The mechanism used to defeat the plunge spring works flawlessly and is very easy to both engage and disengage if you read the instructions carefully. This feature is what sold me on the router in the first place, as it will spend most of its time in the router table. No need to buy a ... router lift accessory with this machine! It came with a fine adjust extension and can be easily micro-adjusted while under the table. I was also delighted to find a dust pick-up attachment in the package, I did not expect that!
I've been feeling braver recently, and after considerable research I purchased the Bosch 1619 along with a Veritas router table. Virtually all of the 3HP+ routers have more than enough power to do any work so the decision criteria had to be based on something other than sheer power. Important to me was ease of bit changes, runout and quiet(least noise). I haven't been disappointed, making raised panels in oak and walnut is easy-peasy with the Bosch 1619-Veritas combo.
For the most part, this 1619 resides under a router table. With the extended handle that comes standard with the router, under table adjustments are quick. Roll the large diamer handle between your hands, and the router can be moved up or down about 2 inches in 15 seconds. I've made about 40 raised panel doors with this router so far, and I really like the power it has. My panel raising bit is 2.5 inches in diameter. I remove about 5/16 in my first pass, and then take off 1/16 to get a nice clean surface. Taking 5/16 in one pass with this large bit does not bog this machine down. The on/off switch is built into the handle which makes for convenient free-hand operation. The switch is difficult to reach when the machine is mounted under the table, but an auxillary switch on the router table solves that problem. I also like the built in lock on the spindle. Bits can be changed with only one wrench. ... Read more

The beauty of this machine is how well the tool fits your hand. The half slot opening gives you worry free confidence your pinky finger won't turn into hamburger. Yes, there are a few sharp edges from the protruding contours but nothing beats the control your palm has over this trimmer. Maybe PC should adopt Milwaukee's "Body Grip" concept for this unit along with a plunge mechanism. Imagine a rubberized "Body Grip" plunge trimmer. Then again, too much change won't make this tool what the 310 is all about! I know there are cheaper trimmers out there with more bells and whistles. But wrap your hands around this baby first. You'll appreciate the elegance and control this machine has to offer. Vibration is kept to a minimal with the excellent power to weight ratio. Power is more than adequate for a router this size. Routing visiblity is great and is greatly improved with one of Pat Warner's clear lexan sub-bases. Best of all, PC did not cheap'in this machine to compete with the competition...instead they introduced the 7310 which is far from being the successor to this fine tuned legend. Too bad, PC didn't provide a metal case for this high priced machine. A cool pint size metal case would really complete the ensemble. I guess most people who purchase this trimmer are capable of building one with fine wood.
I've had my eyes on the Bosch 1617 for a couple of years... nice router, but pretty heavy and the knobs felt too big to my average (yea, just average) hands. Then it occured me, "Jeez, all I ever do with my old router is edge work and pattern rout material in a table setup. Do I really NEED 2 hp and all that tool weight? Why not check out the trim router offerings?" With the exception of this one model, they all (DeWalt, Bosch, PC) seem to have very similar builds, features and "feel". They just seem like Dremels or Roto-Zips that will hold router bits. The depth settings were so-so in their accuracy; the feel was just not what I was looking for... Then, but what should my eyes fall upon, but the 25 year old design of the Porter-Cable 310 "Production Laminate Trimmer" - looks pretty much like a 690 on anti-steroids. Weighs in at less than half the weight at 3-3/4 lbs, has the ring depth adjustment just like the 690, the on/off in the same placement, round base, all ball-bearing, cast and machined body (not plastic like the other trimmers), and turns @ 27,500 rpm with its little 2/3 hp motor. And, only $150 bucks. WHAT!?! $$150$$?!?! I can get the Bosch for that just about that amount; guess I won't be saving any green with this purchase. Pry out the wallets boys & girls. Hmmm, could this one be what I'm looking for though? I do, afterall, seem to be gravitating to smaller, less beastly tools of late. But would the 2/3 hp be enough? Would it mount up in my table? Can I make bushings and other accessories work? The short answer is, "Yes!" to all of the above - accepts P-C bushings, mounts up to a table just fine. Zowie! This little router really packs a punch! Kind of like driving a sporty little roadster instead of a Mack truck. Boy does this thing handle! Mounted it up to my table and ran off some test cuts > A-OK. Will be making up a plexi/lexan/polycarb aux. base with knobs for it. Someday maybe I'll go the mega-hp router route, but for now I'm enjoying my new pint-sized screamer (actually it is MUCH quieter and smoother than my old Craftsman). ... Read more

Amazon.com Review We really appreciate Porter-Cable's new autorelease collet design, which prevents bits from getting frozen in the machine. It'd be great if Porter-Cable could come up with an alternative to needing two wrenches for a bit change, but this minor inconvenience is far outweighed by the tool's overall quality. In fact, Porter-Cable's focus on simple, quality engineering is the reason for this model's long-lasting success. The router doesn't offer electronic variable-speed control or enough power to effectively double as a shaper, but it is among the smoothest-running routers we've tried, producing consistently clean results. For most applications it offers all the versatility and muscle you could ask for. --Brian Trinen Features Reviews (3)
