Amazon.com Review Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it. Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course-adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Removing the motor from the base is a similar operation: simply release the flip lever, depress the course-adjustment lever, slide the motor out until it stops, then turn the motor counterclockwise and pull. It couldn't be easier, and there's no thumbscrew to wrestle with. Anyone who switches bases frequently will appreciate this design. The 1618EVS also has soft start and electronic variable speed, more or less industry standards today. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 of an inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in Bosch's battle for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald Features Reviews (15)
I use this tool with the Bosch Deluxe edge guide to make trim and moulding. No question this is professional level tool that great for homeowner and contrator. I love this thing! I have yet to find something I don't like.

Pros: Cons: Overall: I truly enjoy using this router. I recommend this model for hand help operations.
Ultimately, you can make a perfectly centered baseplate with a lexan blank, a drill, a few bits and some patience, so the problem was not insurmountable if you intend to use the router freehand or in a table that accepts user made baseplates. The Jess'em router lift unfortunately does not. For me that is ok since I intend to use another router for that application (it is too much of a pain to mount/dismount). Like other users, I have noticed that the baseplate threads strip out easily, so don't get carried away when you tigthen them.
1.) THE BASE is too small - It has a tendency to lean forward even when I move the router S-L-O-W-L-Y 2.) POWER - This router has a dissapointing motor. When it's cranked up to it's highest level I think it's weak when cutting through SOFT pine 3.) HANDLES - The lockdown handle has a tendency to work loose as I'm using it. UNFORTUNATLELY, tightening it too much will destroy it 4.) THE VACUUM - it's abililty to attach to a vacuumm is a good idea but FAILS in the end. 5.) COLLET CHANGES - the plastic cover for the vaccuum always gets in the way when you're changing bits C-O-N-C-L-U-S-I-O-N .... i REALLY dislike my Dewalt router... I don't think the reviewers in woodworking magazines know what they're talking about.. they're always giving this router good reviews!!! ... Read more

2.) Also, adjustment is a bit awkward because you have to shim the fence up and down and side to side to move it. VERY TIME CONSUMING 3.) and it's easy to loose the spring-loaded adjustment screw if you loosen it too much 4.) MOST ANNOYING: if the router bit is not flush against the fence, you will CONTINUALLY generate strips of wood that actually jam inside the fence and elsewhere. CONCLUSION - better get an edge guide from someone else. This one is cheap

I admit, I'm not a spontaneous person when it comes to buying larger ticket item tools. This was no exception approx 18 months ago. I insist on good research. I tried to consider every possible use, quality, ergonomics, company reputation and overall long term investment along with price. First stop was here at Amazon.com, next Workbench Magazine (March/April 2001 issue, page 44.), followed by hands on inspection at local shops including Home Depot, Sears, Rockler and Tool Mart. Out of a half dozen choices it came down to the DeWalt 621 or Porter Cable 7529. I did not like the electronics issues that plagued the P.C. (Porter Cable), and the fine depth adjustment rod is difficult to turn due to its very close proximity to the router body. Overall quality, ease of use and power were the priorities for my choice and then price. I would have gladly paid ...more for a mid-size router, if I felt it was truly better. I've heard from local woodworking shops that P.C. has addressed the electronics problems with the 7529 but with the higher cost (and weight) and lower usable power, the 621 was still the better choice. I decided to buy mine at Amazon.com as I did not have to pay shipping/handling or tax and I was assured of quick delivery. The base price here was competitive with other websites and stores and I received the edge guide attachment free. When I received shipment the first thing that went through my mind was "Oh no, what happened!?" The outer shipping box had a huge 4" diameter hole in the right lower corner. Fortunately the router was encased in it's own box toward the rear of the shipping one. I immediately unpackaged and plugged it in. It's soft start electronics smoothly and quickly brought the router up to speed. The only noise heard was the soft whoosh of air from the motor's fan. It was music to my ears. Wheeew was the sound we both made! I am a woodworder first and plastic/metal fabricator second. I wanted to really put this machine to test under a significant load. I am in the process of fabricating a 4" mini-table saw with a solid aluminum table top and needed to route two 1/8" deep by 1/2" wide miter grooves. Now obviously this is not likely to be recommended by DeWalt, but as I said, I wanted to test this machine under heavy load. A 1/2" shank ,1/2" straight carbide bit was fitted and the work began. The 621 sliced through the top without a whimper, slowing of the motor or excess vibration. The first wood project was a 1/4" roundover of redwood stock for some custom stackable shelves. The roundover was so effortless I thought I had missed the stock and had to turn off the machine and feel the edge with my finger to believe I had actually cut the surface. I was pleasantly surprised, the edge was perfect. Next job. 1/2" dados (using undersized plywood straight bit) to create tight fitting shelves in a birch cabinet followed by 1/2" x 1" deep mortises for tenon joints on a seperate redwood stand. The power and precision of this machine is impressive and with the lighter weight makes it nimble in the hands unlike the P.C. tank. The rack-and-pinion depth adjustment worked superb as did the three position turret, although six stops would be better. With power locked on and plunge raised, the 621 barely moved on my tabletop, a testament to it's ball bearings and smoothness. The fat spindle lock button was easy to use and much appreciated by my fingertip (and knuckles for those unfortunate without this feature). The 95% efficiency regarding this routers ability to clear dust and woodchips you may have read is absolutely true! The large steel plunge rod (actually a hollow pipe) on the left of the machine is a cleverly designed vacuum tube (In this case different is better. Good job DeWalt!!). Attached to my shop vac, the suction works so well I have even used it to clear some of the excess dust on the table produced from my other machines. I just lightly pass the router over the dust and chips instead of detaching the vacuum hose from the router or blowing it away using my lungs. As I said earlier I don't believe in any perfect tool and this router does have a few quirks. The base is different from most routers. Having two parallel straight edges gives it a smaller total surface area but also allows for easier edge guiding. The power switch is unusual to use and more complicated than a simple lever but is designed for safety as is the P.C. 7529 and like the P.C. just takes some getting use to. The plunge lock is also different from the others but easy to use without having to remove any fingers from it's grip so as to activate a lever. The Pro's: **Impressive Macro/Micro plunge adjustments The Con's: **Unusual base design with smaller surface area Summary: Maybe I like the 621 based on its ample merits or maybe because it's yellow color reminds me of my Tonka truck as a boy? It's definitely a very good tool. Or is it just an adult toy? Hmmm....
Lo and behold, the new router is different. The plunge springs are softer making it easier to control during plunge cuts. The switch has been redesigned with a more positive lock. With the older router, it was too easy to bump the switch off. The plastic chip guard has been redesigned and is much more effective. The bushing holder is easier to install and fits better. Both routers have variable speed and soft start. The balance point of the router is to the left of the bit making it less 'tippy'. The motor is quiet and smooth. The power is deceptive. I replaced the stolen DW621 with a new DW621 because out of all the tools in my shop, the Dewalt feels the best in my hands. ... Read more

I originally bought the smaller cheaper guide. It was too small with only a narrow contact against the wood. It wasn't very long so it was harder for me to feel it making contact with the wood. I ended up getting this at a later time when I large project came along. This guide is more substantial. It has larger contact surfaces, great adjustment and some weight which helps you maintain control of the router. I don't feel that it's awkward weight, just something substantial that helps control the tool. I actually ripped a long piece or material and screwed it along the edge to increase the stability. It has holes machined in its face which allow you to do just that if you think you need it. Most cases you probably won't. I just happened to need a longer fence. Another plus is that it will fit the new 890 series so I didn't have to get another fence when I added this router to my collection.

Amazon.com Review The variable-speed dial on this router is easy to access and offers precise microadjustments, and onboard electronics keep motor speed constant. This model also offers the soft-start electronics we've come to expect on high-end power tools: power comes on smooth and quickly ramps to full speed. As a result, the big 3-1/4-horsepower motor doesn't torque the tool from the user's grip. Of course, aside from its use as a handheld router, this tool is designed to be mounted to a router table; it is powerful enough that we feel comfortable using it for many tasks we might normally assign to the spindle shaper. We find Freud's router particularly user-friendly when we're making adjustments: the sliding shaft lock, plunge lock, and quick-release depth stop are all conveniently located and easy to operate. Overall, this is a very good tool at a very good price. --Tim Block Features Reviews (57)
The Good- -This router is the Least expensive of all the heavy duty routers. -It has several standard features (height adjustment knob, 1/4" reducer collet, dust collection, edge guide, etc.) that will cost extra on the other brands like DeWalt, Porter Cable, etc. -It's relatively quite. -It has power to do any job, and then some to spare. -The on/off switch is large and easily within reach. -There are 3 adjustable depth stops which allows you multiple depth stops at the turn of the stop. -Variable Speed & Soft Start The Bad- -The mounting screws (for router table plates like Rousseau) are a little short for me, and they're a metric thread. I thought the threads were 1/4" x #20, but I was soon proven wrong. This isn't the end of the world, it just means I have to run down to the hardware store for some longer screws. -This router is pretty heavy. I guess I can't complain much here, as mine will be mostly be table mounted. I think the Freud is lighter than most of the other brands in this power range. -The plunge action is a bit stiff. I can't complain much as this is a big router, meant for big jobs. You probably won't be doing any 1/16" freehand rounding over work with a big router like this. -The plunge lock lever works opposite what I'm used to on my old router - to lock the plunge, you lift the lever and to unlock, you lower the lever. Again this is not a major concern, just something I have to get used to. -The chuck wrench that comes with the router looks a bit flimsy, and I'll probably step it up to a heavy duty one. The Ugly- -It's a lean, mean, routing machine. Solid black with a touch of gray. No pretty paint job like DeWalt or Porter Cable. But let's face it, who cares what color the thing is? It does the job and you'll save a pile of cash. My 2 cents - Buy the Freud, take the cash you save and buy some bits, template guides, or a router table insert. Happy Routing
1) Most powerful- 3 -1/4 HP (15 amps!) motor A comparable Porter Cable / Bosch machine with above specifications would cost about 50% more than what I paid, I believe. On the negative side: 1) The finish does not compare with PC or Bosch. Even though I read several warnings about the collet, I still could not figure out how to slip the bit into the collet. After 30 minutes of frustration (the collet internal diameter measured less than .48" and will not receive a 1/2" diameter shank), I finally understood how to do it. Please see below: 1) Remove collet and nut from router 2) Push collet into collet nut with your finger till it snaps in completely. Now the collet springs open fully and is a tad over 1/2" diameter. The bit (shank) will slip in without a problem. In other words, make this assembly outside the router. 3)Push this collet / bit/ nut assembly into the router; tighten the nut with collet wrench (spindle lock mechanism will hold the spidle; you need only 1 wrench). I could do this very easily even with the router mounted inside the table. You only need to learn how to do this once. If you are a practical type of a person (looks and frills do not matter) person, you will love this machine because it is a great value. Even though this is my first router (and I am a noice wood-worker), I am having fun with it. I know I do not have to upgrade to a bigger or more powerful machine (like with my other tool purchases). Though it weighs 12 plus pounds, it is fairly easy to do hand routing because it has very ergonomic handles and is well balanced. The switch is easy to use (in hand routing mode) and so is the height adjustment. The soft start feature is probably the best feature (I did not ruin even my very first trial piece). Some people have compared the noise with a 747 taking off. Its more like a 747 cruising! Strangely, I found it most uncomfortable (audio level / frequency) at setting # 3 (out of 6). However, I do not believe this machine is any noisier than any comparable router (or some teenage drivers). I have rated this machine at 4 stars (instead of 5) because: 1) poor cosmetics / industrial appearance. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. I got the router, router table (a must have, in my opinion) & a 12 piece (1/2") bit set for a marginal amount over the cost of a comparable Porter cable machine.
I planned to install the Freud in a Rockler table, which has a nice 1/4" aluminum plate. The plate came predrilled for the router. The plate is high quality, with a good, stiff, flat surface to mount the router to. When all the components came in, I gave them a thorough inspection. The first thing I did was to remove the plastic plate from the router bottom. You don't need it in a router table setup. I then matched the Rockler plate to the Freud router base. As another reviewer has commented, there was a problem with the flatness of the Freud base. The plate would "rock" and wobble when matched up to the base. Not a lot, but enough to bother me. I suppose you could just go ahead and attach the base to the plate with the three screws, but you would probably end up warping the plate a bit. I thought of sanding the base smooth on a sanding machine, or milling it, which would certainly give you a flat base. But then you wouldn't know for certain if the base were "true" to the axis of the router shaft. (In fact, I wasn't certain the base was true to the shaft to begin with.) You want the base to be true so your router bits mount truly perpendicular to your table, and don't run off at an angle, imparting an angle to your cuts. I was lucky enough to find an excellent solution. (I guess I'm also lucky enough to have a metal lathe.) I was able to lock a 1/2" shaft in the router, chuck the other end of the shaft in the lathe, and turn down the bottom of the base plate so it was flat and true. I had to remove the handles from the router to give me enough clearance on my lathe, and tape up the electrical cord, but otherwise I didn't have to dismantle the router. I spun the router at relatively slow speed, and had no problem with dynamic imbalance, a bit to my surprise. I didn't have to remove a lot of metal, just enough so that I could see the whole base had been touched by the carbide cutter. The operation went very well, and the base turned out flat and a perfect fit to the Rockler plate. I also know that it is now true to the axis of the router shaft, since that was the axis about which it was turned. ... With the router mounted and installed on the table, I've found it has ample power for all the jobs I've done with it so far. I like the large elevation knob and the on/off switch. Both are fairly easy to access from under the table. If you wanted to get fancy you could mount a separate on/off switch to the bottom front or side of the table, and go with one of the various router elevation devices that can be accessed from the top of the table. But I haven't felt the burning need for either of these things yet. And yes the router is a bit loud, but not to the point that it bothers me. (And I certainly don't forget and leave it running when I'm through with a job!) I've had no problems using either the 1/4" or 1/2" collets. If the router didn't need the tuning, I'ld give it a 5+ for value as a table router. Since it did require some, I give it a 4.
As for the base, mine is rock steady, sits flat and does not wobble. As for the edge guide, it is not the best in the world, but it does the job very well. This is the best 3 1/4 HP router for under $.... I would suggest this router to anyone. ... Read more

The bit is enclosed in a box that can easily be attached to a vacuum. Drill 2 holes to attach it to any existing router table(I mean uh,.. any existing router table that you are able and/or willing to drill holes in). All of the parts and hardware are high quality, heavy duty and accommodate large fingers and hands. The voidless 13 ply fences are easily adjustable. I bought mine years ago, so my information might be dated, but the only thing I can think of that would make this a better tool out of the box is plastic laminate on the face of the fences. I did this myself long before the first job I used it for was completed. It just seems natural to me that Rousseau would protect that sweet plywood and at the same time give this tool a look and feel that is similar to the rest of their product line. ) ... Read more

The first is the lack of a spindle lock requiring two wrenches. The Ryobi had that feature and I miss it. Haven't busted any knuckles, but it is more trouble to change bits. The biggest problem is the fixed base lock. It is worthless. P-C dropped the ball on this aspect. I have read around the net and found several others voicing the same thing-some have even removed the "locking tab" using only a regular nut and bolt in it's place! I miss the trigger power switch on the handle, but this is due to the interchanging of bases/handles. It has good power and is reliable so far. I bought another fixed base and mounted under my table saw extension for a router table, so for the versatility of 3 routers for the relatively low cost it is alright. I would like to buy a bigger router to mount permanently in the table, and I would buy P-C again. ... Read more
