For freehanding the router is great, the motor strong and quiet. The up and down mechanism could use some refinement, probably only tooo loose in the loose position.

Once again the collet body started to come loose, but before I could shut off the motor the collet body (with collet and bit still attached) flew off the armature shaft and whacked me in the groin - OUCH!!! Fortunately the bit didn't impale me, but let me tell you, I was VERY lucky to hobble away with the family jewels intact. Again, I re-attached the collet body and this time used some high-strength thread locking compound to hold it all together. This was several weeks ago, and so-far, so-good. The router has been a thing of beauty ever since. So... I also recommend replacing the stock baseplate with the PC690 baseplate (about $11) since it's easier to center the PC baseplate due to the flathead vs. panhead screws. At least Makita makes this router so it can be used with the baseplates and jigs I made for my old PC690! That was a very smart thing for Makita to do.
1. This is the most quiet router I have ever heard in my life. I can turn it on, and while it is running wide open on the highest speed setting, I can carry on a conversation with my wife when she is standing right next to me, speaking in the same tone we were before I turned it on. This is while the router was in my hands right in front of me, imagine how quiet it is when mounted in the table! 2. Fit and finish is second to none. Swapping bases is a snap. Although you do need to tighten one screw when you drop it in the plunge base. The fixed base uses a snap buckle like the PC 690. The single screw is not a pain at all, but it could have been a little nicer. 3. The motor has a HUGE flat top on it, so when you change bits you simply stand it on the motor and it stays all by itself. The nicest system I have seen yet. 4. The plunge base it "almost" as smooth as the Dewalt. I say almost because I do not think ANY router will EVER be as smooth when plunging as the Dewalt is, but this is smoother than the PC buy a noticable amount. 5. The soft start option is very nice for getting both hands on the router to get down to buisness. Having it closer to the handles would have been nice, but with the soft start it is not an issue. 6. Adjustability of the plunge base is second to none. The turret spins as freely as you could ever ask. 1 complete revolution of the adjuster makes a 1/64th change in bit heighth. And if you press in the button on the adjuster you can make huge incremental changes in a snap, and then return it back to the 1/64th settings for fine tuning. 7. Accesories galore. It came with the nicest single case that holds both bases I have seen yet. It also came with a 6 peice Makita bit set, a clear chip shield that just snaps in place, a bolt on clear dust collection port, an extra base that is see through, all of the wrenches and both collets. I would recomend this Router to Anyone who wants the best tool on the market. This one tool will do everything anyone could ask of a router, and with the deal Amazon.com is offering, it is the cheapest 2+HP router you can purchase. All in all, I give this a perfect 10....
The Makita RF1101KIT is truly an underdog that shines bright in the shop (unless you are a very picky perfectionist). The 2-1/4 HP motor is absolutely smooth, powerful and QUIET, as far as routers are concerned. The variable speed is also simple and smooth. The motor, the HEART of any router, is sure to last a long time in this Makita if you don't abuse it. The stable flat top makes bit changes fast and easy but the stamped steel wrenches could use a overhaul. They are somewhat loose on the collet nuts and seem "soft," like you could spread them out if you half-heartedly tried. The base is identical to the P-C 690 and takes all the P-C assessories perfectly, which saves some money and time as everyone makes their accessories to fit a 690. No ultra-expensive, model-specific marketing ploy. The fixed base is where my biggest beef is. The PLASTIC ring that has measurement graduations on it, helping in precise adjustments, is absolute CRAP. The measurements are very hard to see and the ring is way too loose, making small adjustments a hit-n-miss attempt. Moreover, one TWO models I have seen, including my own, one or two of the skimpy, thin plastic tabs that barely hold the ring into the aluminum base have broken off and allow the ring to fall off when you swap the motor and it no longer stays where you rotate it, making it useless. I have taken mine off and just adjust height like a pro does, with a ruler or spacers. Very poor design Makita... FIX IT! The plunge base is one of the best. Not as smooth as the DeWalt but far better than the P-C, probqably equal to Bosch. It lifts the motor smoothly with springs but is easily dropped down and set. The control lever is OK but not the most ergonomic in placement. It does lock very securely so it won't move as you use it. The rotating plunge set wheel mounted on the base is very secure and substantial, not loose like Bosch and DeWalt. It has multiple adjustments... almost too many. I really like the plunge adjustments and this is one of the big selling points for me. The dust shroud works good if you want it. The edge guide/fence? Hmmmm. It works but very cheap and cheezy. Just plain stamped steel and some steel rods... very basic. I wouldn't trust it on anything needing precision lines. The micro-adjust P-C guide is much better and fits prefect. Finally, the case. It is a GREAT CASE with stash points for all your goodies, as well as some 1/4" and 1/2" bits. It also holds the router and bases securely. It is tough and should last as long as the router. All in all, I'm glad I bought the Makita. It is quality, very durable and isn't something everyone out there has.... YET! But just like any router out there, as the various reviews show, nothing is PERFECT. This will be so as long as people have habits, ideas and opinions... The Makita comes darn close though... DARN CLOSE!
The router is much quieter than any other I've heard. It has adequate power for all of the woods I've used (red oak, poplar, etc.), and comes with a myriad of useful accessories. I couldn't be happier with my selection to this point. Get yourself a quality set of bits, and this router will serve you well.

I really really wanted a Porter Cable because I heard they are the best. I didn't like the crude nature of the 690 and I didn't want to twist the MOTOR to move the freaking bit up and down. I'm just getting into woodworking and I wanted something that felt just right. After going into Woodcraft and Lowe's and Home Depot, I chose the DeWalt over the newest Porter cable because: 1) the 890 series, while it feels solid and looks great, has some shortcomings with quality parts--especially the plunge base. It has a PLASTIC depth marker--and some aren't even CLEAR so you have no idea what depth you are at. Bottom line- I tried and tried to love the new porter cable. And I do, but not as much as the newest Dewalt. However, I still will probably go with their 3 1/4 horse, and a 890 D-Handle if they ever make it.
Good features: * depth is easy to set on both bases. Bad features: I would definitely recommend this to any woodworker.
The router itself is a fixture in many workshops, and it has been reviewed extensively, so I'll tell you about the bits. Of course, they're HSS, not carbide tipped, and they're all 1/4 inch shank. Included in the set is : So the bits are nothing to write home about. It's unlikely they'll be worth much to you; I'm more likely to chuck them in the trash than in a collet. As a general rule, if you use your router enough to justify its cost, you'll spend more in bits than you did on the router itself. A pro doesn't need these bits, and if you're new to woodworking, don't assume you'll get very far with these guys. One good carbide-tipped straight bit is worth more than this collection of five.

Upon getting the router home I installed it in a Craftsman 926608000 router table, (the laminate "Professional" model where the scale decals rub off after 5 minutes of use) I was pleasantly surprised to find that it fit the stock mounting plate without the need to drill more holes or buy an adapter plate from Sears. My one complaint so far is that the depth adjustment when it's mounted in the table doesn't feel all that precise. It feels like it hangs up, and once you re-clamp the base clamp after making your adjustment the bit seems to change height a little. The "feel" of how the motor fits and slides in the plunge and fixed bases leaves a little to be desired. I've since played with the depth adjustments on a couple of the more expensive routers(DeWalt, Porter Cable, Bosch) at various stores and they feel more smooth and positive. You get what you pay for, I guess. Overall I like the router, and the many features you get for the money are impressive. ps- don't buy the Skil jigsaw, Model #4580-04
Once I decided to actually sit down and read the directions and setup my workspace correctly, the router performed pretty darned well. I've done plunge routing and have had pretty good success. I've cut t-slots, stopped dados and done roundovers on a hand-held basis. I've just finished building a router table had have the fixed-base mounted in the table. It's not so difficult adjusting the height while the router is mounted and getting the motor out is pretty safe although tedious. But the only issues I've had with this router have been due to my own inexperience/stupidity. I got a dovetail jig for Father's Day and can't wait to start learning how to do these with the router. The router is pretty light but the motor is powerful. Maybe some of the more expensive models have more features and more ergomic handles. Also, the little trigger lock switch is a bit difficult to get to stay in at times. I'm looking to get a second router soon down the road as I get tired of swapping the motor in and out of the router table. I might get one of the Bosch plunge/fixed combos...but then again, I might just get two more 1825s for the same price so I can have a second freehand for general routing and one for dovetailing. If you're not doing woodwork more than on the weekends...give this puppy a looksie! :)
All that being said, I'm glad I didn't win the ebay auctions I competed in for the routers listed above. Don't get me wrong: I'm not about to speak out against those big-name routers - mostly because I haven't used them. I HAVE used my Skil, though, and here's the rundown: 1) VERY convenient, simple base change operations. 12) The case got put on a shelf, so no comments on that. I may have missed something, but the gist of my review is this: for only $99 (and free shipping over Amazon.com), you can NOT go wrong with this router. This coming from a guy who hasn't owned a Skil product in his life until now. Comments on the other reviews: 2) Accessories. The only accessory I might want is the dust collector adaptor for each base. I'm a little disappointed they weren't included, but it's not too big of a deal. I use the dust collector on my table, so that's not an issue. As for a dust collector when routing by hand - the vacuum hoses usually create more of a hindrance/hazard than they're worth. 3) Customer support. Haven't had to deal with this. If it's really like the guy said, then that sucks. Hopefully I won't have to find out.
Now, I don't know about you, but I expect manufacturers of power tools (particularly Bosch, which owns Skil) to stand behind their products, and this doesn't qualify! After just paying to buy a brand new router, I'm sure not going to shell out even more bucks to get it repaired! Now I'll see if the store where I bought it can help me out... I may give the Skil one more shot, but I hope I don't end up with another dud. ... Read more

When DeWalt came out with their new 1 3/4 and 2 1/4 hp routers with multiple bases to compete with PC, I had to try them. I decided on the 1 3/4 hp, as I have their 2 hp, and have never liked the weight of the unit. It always felt cumbersome doing light work. Upon receiveing this little router, I mounted the fixed base underneath one of my router tables, and kept the plunge base out for travelling work. Here are my impressions: 1.) This has plenty of smooth power to run virtually anything you fire its way. I was able to smoothly run a cabinet panelling bit through MDF (I would not dare to do so through hardwood that is what the 3hp router is for). On sit I ran 3/4" roundovers, 3/4" straight fluted bits, etc. without incident. This router has the power to do almost anything you need on site, and can run most bits you need in a router table. 2.) The changing of the motor from base to base takes a couple of times to get used to, but is smarter than the current Porter Cable model. Changing router bits requires two wrenches, however, the detachable cord and flat base allow it to rest in a flat and stable position. 3.) They made the base compatbile with Porter Cable bases so most of the base attachments you can buy for PC also work with the DeWalt. Bottom line is I got rid of all other routers I owned except for the DeWalt 3hp (for panelling), and have two fixed bases mounted under Rockler router tables, one plunge and one fixed base for on site work, and a total of 5 motors to put wherever I need them. It has truly been a universal fit for all of my routing needs! ... Read more

The bars are smaller than I expected, though - the picture is true, but my eye expected something larger. The bars are only 2-3/8 inches long, and not exact at that. And you'll have to file the ends to get the burrs off so that they will sit flat. Not much, just a little. After receiving these bars, it inspired me to go to the hardware store and pick up some 3/4" square brass bar stock ... and cut it to various lengths to go along with this set. I made a set of 1", 2", 3", and 6" long bars. Now I can measure a lot more, very simply! The "wooden" block that they sit in is not really wood, if that matters to you. It's a 2-3/8 by 3-7/8 piece of 3/4-thick "woodstalk" engineered fiberboard, manufactured from harvested wheat straw and resin. It's a good way to use wheat field waste that previously had been burned. Looks like MDF, actually. I would give it the fifth star if it was real wood and if the ends of the bars were "cleaner". It seems a little overpriced for about [price] worth of cut brass bar stock and MDF in a little plastic bag, though. Still, I'm not complaining. This is a good product, does just what it's supposed to do, and will serve its purpose very well.

I own a Bosch 1613EVS plunge router and love it but wanted a dual base system too. Bosch routers are known for comfort and precision. They're kind of like the Toyota's of tools: well engineered tools that aren't the very best but consistently high performing and long lasting. The irritating things about this 1617PK/EVSPK router are the lack of a built-in dust control connection/system, non-centered base that requires the purchase of a centering cone or bit, and proprietary guide bushing system that requires an adapter to use the Porter-Cable standard guide bushings. Small things that I bought accessories to address but would've been better if they were part of the kit. Because of those things, I was convinced I would eventually get the Porter Cable 894VK combo kit until I heard how bad the plunge was on it. It's perfect on the Bosch, with Bosch being pretty much the only brand that covers its plunge posts to prevent dust from entering. The only other thing I don't like is that, unlike my 1613EVS plunge router, the 1617 doesn't have an on/off trigger on the plunge handle. But in the end, I'm a Bosch loyalist and because of the Lowes clearance, I now have two Bosch routers and am happy with both.
Tonight I used the router for the first time. Actually, it was the first time I have EVER used a router. I am very very impressed! I had absolutely no problems with the thing getting bogged down, even when I hit a knot in a piece of plywood. It just went right through it and there was no speed change at all. This router is built like a tank, too. I have never seen a power tool that just looked beautiful. This thing does. The fit and finish is most excellent.

Dear Sirs, I recently bought an RA1164 router base with fine adjust handle (to be mounted under a router table). I actually only needed the handle. I own about 8 Bosch routers and wanted to mount one undermount one. The fine adjust handle is easier to reach under a table. Unfortunately the fine adjust handle broke off after a few weeks use. Examination shows that the construction of this handle is completely insufficient. The handle is threaded into a fitting on the router base. The threaded end of the handle is actually a hollow tube with walls about 1/16" thick. Any lateral pressure (sideways} can easily snap the handle off at this weak point, as happened to me. Please let me know if you are willing to fix this problem with a different casting or other means of threading the handle, and how I can get the fix. Very truly yours Elia A. Sinaiko
The RA1164 is essentially the same as the stock base supplied with the router, minus the nice wood handles. The real bonus is that the under table base has the same precision depth adjustment as the stock unit (1/16" per turn). It also comes with an extension for the depth adjustment that makes it even easier to reach in tight places. It's a great addition to any shop. Be advised that this RA1164 base only works with specific Bosch router models: 1617 (16171), 1617EVS (16176), 1618 (16181, 1618EVS (16186), 1617 220 volt (0601617161). ... Read more
