2-0 out of 5 stars Good idea... but poor design
I bought the router extension as an add-on to the outstanding porta-max series of table saw stands. I must say that I have found it to be mainly useless.

1. This router extension slides into the portamax rails and is leveled to the portamax table surface using set screws. As soon as you apply a load to the router extension, the set screws dent the portamax rails. This makes levelling difficult and of course causes unsightly damage to the portamax.

2. The otherwise excellent portamax fence is useless as a router fence. The vibration and pulling motion created when routing with the extension table cause the fence to slide no matter how hard I was able to crank down the friction cam.

3. The thickness (or should I say thinness) of the particle board top and the choice of mounting points makes clamping an alternate fence impossible. Applying appropriate clamping force causes large bowing and flexing of the laminate top. The result is that once you discover that the portamax fence can't be used, you discover you can't clamp a straight board as a fence either.

4. The choice of the pop-out ring sizes in the plastic insert are such that the Dewalt DW-621 cannot be bolted to the insert and must be bolted to an intermediate plate which is then bolted to the insert. This is mainly Dewalt's fault since the DW-621 base is famously small and narrow.

The bottom line is that for $100 you do not get much. I only got the plastic insert which I built my own table around. Anyone looking to add this to their portamax should think twice. Save yourself the hassle and just buy the plastic insert.

3-0 out of 5 stars could be better
it's a nice extension table and it's pretty easy to attach. i really like the high pressure laminate and the router plate.

on the downside:

i just wish they included the template for making holes for the fence with this extension table. it's a real hassle to measure up all the holes correctly

5-0 out of 5 stars he he,.. the answer is no. I do not work for Rousseau.
Like most home improvements contractors, I place a high value on tools that bring 'shop' performance to jobsites without taking up valuable space in my vehicle and/or several heavy trips to load and unload.

This router table does that and has replaced other router tables because it is durable, accurate, more versatile and takes up a fraction of the space.

Like Rousseau's stable and accurate table saw mounting system, the extension table setup and adjustment, once done, rarely needs adjustment through repeated setups and breakdowns. You slide it into the table saw stand and you're ready to set up bits and/or fences.

While the router table is a great extension to the table saw stand, I use it just as often by itself by just spanning it across horses or a garbage pail(most sawdust goes straight to where it belongs. Though you could rig a shop-vac without too much thought if you need better dust removal).

While Rousseau's table saw fence can be used in this configuration for some applications and as a stable and accurate stage for jigs, their router table fence is another fine tool that deserves very serious consideration too.

Additional removable base plates are readily available(or can be easily made in the field). This allows you to mount a variety of tools to different base plates and swap them rapidly.

Several years ago, when I first bought the table saw stand, router/extension table and router fence system, I had doubts about its durability,.. and I'm beginning to wonder how many more times it will pay for itself and how many more years of abuse it will take for me to finally be able to claim I was right all along.

)

P.S. I found this company's customer support to be one of the best I have dealt with, and if y'all read these things, I'd like to thank you again for helping my distributor get your product to me more quickly than they thought(or told me was) possible. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good once it's going
This product is a nightmare to assemble. So many parts, many of them needing to be aligned perfectly and there is a total absence of alignment guides. I spent more time assembling this little stand than I spent setting up my band saw. Absolute nightmare. However, once I got it together the table works nicely. It's very lightweight and easily moved around. You can bolt the legs to any surface if you need something really steady. What's strange about this product is the quality of the fence. It's much better than you'd expect. It has a very decent blade guard and it cuts true straight lines. For the money, you can't beat it though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Router
This router is perfect for use of dovetail and other small bits. It uses a 1/4" collet. Compared to other models, it is light in weight and easy to use. It uses the #1001 base which is inter-changeable with the model 690. Has plenty of power for its size. If you don't like to change collets, and can afford to purchase an extra router, this model will certainly do the trick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long lasting router
I have owned a model 100 for 30 years. (back when it was Rockwell). The router was used to finish edges on tables and doors and a quite a lot of countertop laminate work. Today it is used mostly for cutting dovetails and has held up very well. The only parts that have been replaced was the collet and the power switch and this was over 10 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do not under estimate its power
Many people will see 7/8 horse and write it off immediately. I have a monster 3 1/4 horse router that is great on a router table, however it is heavy, awkward, and inaccurate when used free hand. As a Carpenter, I will end up using this tool far more because of its size and weight for day to day use. You can use it for edging and laminate trimming and because of the full size base its great for all around use. It has plenty of power for nearly all applications. And also something else you don't see these days, its made of metal. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Base not perpendicular to shaft
Bought this unit based on recommendations forom others, but returned because the base was not perpendicular to shaft. It is probably not a big deal if you intend to use it for laminate trimming, but I was planning to use it as a mini router, so wouldn't work for me. Otherwise seemed and felt like a great unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laminate Router
I have used this particular Bosch Router in my countertop business for the last 18 years. These routers will last on average 4-5 years with every day use. Easy to change out bits, light weight, and very dependable with very smooth cuts. Highly recommend to any one who installs plastic laminate! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Makita 3612
I am not a writer, so I will make this breif.
I have been working with wood and building furniture for more years than I care to talk about.
The Makita 3612 plunge router I have purchased is really a fine piece of equipment. I have tested it for the past month or so now. I must say it is a much better unit than some of the other routers I have purchased and still own! I was truly in awe when I turned it on the first time. Very little noise. I like that! It lives in my router table now and that is where it will stay. The only thing I am not truly fond of is the small space given for the chuck wrench to be used in. (I have big hands) Other than that, I am quite impressed with it. Some of the "local" (USA) router manufactures should take a look at the "standard" features on this router and think about making certain improvements to their line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many, many years and going strong... real strong
I need a second router to keep fixed in a table and it says a lot about the 3612, which I have had for many years, that I'm buying another similar router but with variable speed. Till date I haven't had a days trouble with the machine. I dropped it once from the work bench and the plastic chip deflector broke but the machine works perfectly. The plunge action is smooth and the power is awesome, I've raised panels in maple, ash, teak, rosewood, without a drop in speed, and at 22,000 rpm the cuts are always smooth. The hand grips are contoured perfectly to fit my palms and the electric brake and soft start make for less wasted effort and time. This was my first router and it will be in my tool box for a long long time more by the looks of it. It seems indistructable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lartoolguy
I wanted the best table mounted router available,so I asked someone who cuts nearly 1,000,000 dovetails a year doing demos for a well known company. He told me that he used the Makita 3612c and that it outlasts all others. He doesnt sell routers. Putting a router upsidedown, mounting it to a table changes how it was designed to opperate. Some don't perform as well as others in this format. The Makita has a great motor, low vibration ,and its bearing configuration are ideal for mounting it in a table.I use it sometimes for hours and it never gets more than a little warm.Lots of power.I dont think anyone wouldn't love this tool.I've had mine for over two years and would buy it again if I needed one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid machine
I have two of these routers, a 9 year old and a newborn. The only difference is the varible speed, and the depth control but everything else is exactly the same. With that said, I can truely say this router will last. My older one has not been treated as well as it should have but the plunge action is still smooth and predictable and everything from the motor to the case has been trouble free. The only thing that I can complain about is the eye shield ( I have somehow broken both of them) and my girls are a bit on the heavy side (but these are also powerful 3.25 hp motors so wieght comes with the territory). They will cut anything ( O.K not metals...) but I can cut oak, maple, cherry with even the biggest bits and they don't bog down. My hat is off to makita for a great machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smooth and powerful
Having used only a 1 1/2 HP router in the past, this tool is a bit intimidating at first. It is very large and very heavy. However, the router is a dream to use. The extra power (and weight) make pattern/free-hand routing much smoother. The controls are well layed out and seem to work equally well in a table or free-hand. The depth stop screw has a quick release for faster course placement and the tall depth setting knob extends well above the top of the router for easy use in a table. Overall I have been extremely pleased with this tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let The HP Fool You
I have been using this router for 2 full years now. I use it daily in a large router table for anything from routing mouldings to doing raised panel doors. Don't let the 1 3/4 hp fool you. It has all the power of the big guys. I have routed everything from soft pine to hardwoods such as oak and birch and have never had a problem with the machine bogging down. The easy finger latch makes it quite easy to change the bits. All of the bits I own are 1/4 shaft so the collet size is fine for me. If I need to move up to 1/2" shafts then I will consider a bigger router. The plunge action in the router is superb. It is smooth and the spring action is very durable. The only drawback to the router is that it doesn't have a micro-adjustment on it like most routers in it's category. This makes it especially hard to use on a router table (although the experts say you shouldn't use a plunge on a table). But this tool has proven itself time and time again and I do not regret purchasing it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Quality, low price
I've only accomplished a little w/ my router. Most of it having attached it to a "value-priced" router table. I bought this router w/ a beginner 10 piece bit set and have been having fun ever since. I've made nameplates, etc.... and would recommend it to anyone who is breaking into woodworking such as myself. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Stand but No Feet!
This stand is a perfect fit for the Porter Cable 691RS Ultimate Router Workshop, with which I bought it. Assembly was easy, and the stand sturdy as can be. The only problem (and it's considerable) is that it shipped without the rubber bushings (feet) that the directions said were included. So it slides. This is truely a great router. Mounted the plunge base in my router table and replaced the retract stop nut with a speed handle, makes adjusting easy and accurate; much more so than the Bosch which I was considering. All in all this router is very balanced and much more user friendly than th PC or Bosch. Plenty of power, light weight, and quite. This router is an excellant choice for a first, or second router if you are not ready to purchase one of the 3 1/4 HP routers. Very satisfied with my choice. 4-0 out of 5 stars A nice adjuster
This came with my Hiatchi M12V, which I got here at Amazon for a very reasonable price (Home Depot's price was $50 more!). I use this adjustment knob when the router is mounted in its table. I removed the plunge springs to keep them elastic. Although not a perfect system (raising all the way up takes a lot of rotations!), it definitely is better then trying to fight the springs with one hand and hold a square in the other!

4-0 out of 5 stars Router table users beware.
I'm pleased with the ease the adjustment knob attached on my Hitachi M12V and with the way the knob allows fine adjustments. Use it with something like the General Tools 23 Aluminum Router Gauge or a drill bit (known diameter/height) to get the adjustments you want. However, if you are a bench top router table user be aware that this is one tall adjustment handle. You may have to set your table up on blocks or use it between to different benches to keep the adjustment handle from bottoming out.

This product does not fit my router, although I was led to believe it would by the product description. It has no value to me.

3-0 out of 5 stars A round piece of plastic.
One problem people have with the Porter-Cable router base is that the hole in the base is too small to accept some of the larger diameter bits that are now available. The hole in this base is larger than the hole in the standard base. However, the Porter-Cable bushings that work so well are fitted for the standard base opening.

It might as well be said that if you are at the skill level where you are using a router you are at the skill level where you can make this yourself. All that is needed is some 1/4 inch thick plexiglass and the ability to drill and countersink three holes. Get this if you want to avoid the hassle of making your own custom base.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Should Be Standard Equipment
Didn't take long after the purchase of my PC router that the base included would not do the job. Standard base would not accept a ½" round over bit. I thought about enlarging the hole someway but thought it might leave some burrs that would mark my wood. New base was the only solution. The base plate accepts the larger router bits I sometimes use just fine. The added bonus to the base plate is its clear design. This is a good plus when using the router as you can precisely get the bit on the wood by eyesight.

Clear router base plates should be standard on all routers produced IMHO.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sub Base makes edge & Dado routing easy!
I have made up my mind never to use 1/4" shank bits again. This posed a problem in that many 1/2" bits won't fit through the standard sub base. The large sub base permits easy bit changes, allows for the use of larger bits, and the clear plastic makes seeing the progress of your work much easier than the solid black standard sub base. In fact I purchased an extra base, the D-handle, installed the 2 1/2" sub base, and in combination, I've never routed edges and dadoes with such ease. Highly Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars oops! may have spoke too soon
I still think this is a great product, but I'm not certain whether it will accept standard template guides (given the larger hole size).

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Sight
I bought this sub-base after I purchased the PC router kit ... and could not fit a router bit through the standard base. I doubt I'll ever go back to the standard base. The clear base gives you a much better view, and of course, allows the use of larger bits. Porter Cable should just include this base with the router. ... Read more
