Amazon.com Review

While there are plenty of solid and reliable plunge routers on the market, there are few that work as smoothly and quietly as this model from Fein. Featuring a soft-start motor that eliminates start-up torque and twisting, six speeds, and electronic feedback control, it's capable of producing great results in a wide variety of materials. The trigger is well placed in the grip, so turning the router on and off can be accomplished without trying to hold it with one hand, and the grips are nicely contoured to the hand and a little larger than those of most other routers. While it can be mounted to a table, this router is designed with plunge routing in mind, and the control it offers for freehand work is really unbeatable. Everything about this router is well thought out, from the easy-to-reach placement of the plunge lever and trigger to the precision of the height adjustment. For many people, the reduced noise level and added degree of control may not be worth the bigger price tag, but for more-discriminating tool buyers the Fein is worth the expense. --Brian Trinen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply put, this is the very best.
First let me say that, no other tool in your arsenal will create such enormous beauty as a router.
I usually don't write a review unless I am passionate about something, and this router falls into this category
The thing I love about this router is the way it is made. It just feels right. It is so light and well balanced, powerful and quiet. If I can exaggerate, and only a little, this thing is about as quiet as an electric can opener. The soft start feature is shared among many of the better routers. It is wonderful not having to brace yourself for the kick at start up. Additionally the electronics compensate for resistance by keeping the rotational speed constant. Another advantage to having more than enough horsepower. This unit is light enough 12 lbs to be used as a hand held, yet sturdy enough to be classified as an industrial production router. The plunge mechanism is smooth without snagging on the way down.
Although someone else commented on the locking mechanism, I must say, it is properly designed. Think of riding a bicycle with brakes on the handlebars. When you want to stop, you grab the lever, pulling it toward you by closing your hand. That is the way the Fein works. Any other way you would be using your finger nails to lock the router, thereby having to slightly loosen your grip. Counter intuitive but I guess the other reviewer had grown accustomed to working a lever on a machine, which worked that way. He may have the Porter Cable or Bosch plunge routers, which has a spring built into it thereby locking it automatically when you release the lever. The feeling I get from that is, "I wonder if it is locked to the proper tightness?" I prefer to tighten it myself. The Fein is intuitive and easy to use.

It is important to match the bit speed recommended by the manufacturer. You will get a feel for this. This Fein router has six speeds, which is actually an infinitely variable knob, with six number positions on it, so you can perfectly match the speed to the task.
You also need plunge capabilities for making quick clean mortise and tenon joints. Some routers only plunge to 2 or 2 1/2", this one plunges to 3". This router comes standard with a 1/2" collet, with a 1/4" collet optional. Having a base which will accept 3 1/2" bits is nice, and this router accepts them. I noticed in a follow up edition of Fine Woodworking magazine, that they had a clip about the Fein RT-1800. They were amazed at the specifications they found for the run out. It was off the chart next to the other routers in their previous months router review.
One other thing that I noticed is that this Fein will accept 3 1/2" bits, which are not all that common, but you can not plunge a bit that size into the base. The bottom of the base will accomodate a bit that size, but the casting does not allow you to plunge it. The Bosch 1619EVS 3+ HP plunge does allow you to plunge a 3 1/2" bit into the base. You could argue that the opening is so large on the Bosch, so as to restrict you on stability, in the event you plan on using it for any kind of hand held work. So there you have it, build a small opening on the base, and gain a lot of control over the workpiece, or create a monster opening, capable of large bits, and your workpiece can fall into it. Get the Bosch, (even though it is louder than the Fein) Get the Fein, and get the Makita D-Handle. Each is a blessing for its own purpose. Oh and get a Porter Cable Laminate trim router as well, for those small light jobs. I'm not trying to spend your money, just that each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Too many to write here. The Makita D Handle is on its way, and I will be writing about some of the specifics on that one as compared to the others herein mentioned. Tune in over there soon.
Am I allowed to say that the German engineering on the Fein Rt 1800 is of the best. Simple, and effective. Engineered to simplicity. That is the way this router is made. Strong, simple, effective. If woodworking is your love, then this tool is worthy of your attention. Out of all of my tools, there is none other, that I am as fond of, as this Fein Router. Stay tuned the Makita D handle challenge is coming. Happy woodworking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Router!
I spent quite a lot of time researching routers, bought this one (after hemming about the price), and love it! The other routers that I looked at, Porter-Cable and DeWalt, were uncomfortable to control, heavy, or lacked the flexibility that I wanted. I was a little concerned at first of the Fein's size and weight. Once I started using the router, however, I was surprised about how easy to maneuver it is. I use the router on and off the table and find it to have plenty of power and be very quiet.

If you are the kind of person who likes to read the manual cover to cover, don't expect much. This is a "no frills" router - It comes in a cardboard box, and essentially tells you how to turn it on and a couple other tid-bits. I figured out how to lock the power on after monkeying with it for a couple minutes (there's a "toggle" on the switch).

The only gripe that I have is that the mechanism to free-up the plunge feature feels backwards - you have to push it away to release it and it's not on a spring.

You know how it feels to pick up an item and it's clear that the manufacturer spent time thinking about their product? This router is exactly like that. It's well built, and very comfortable to use. I would buy this router again in a second.

4-0 out of 5 stars The BEST plunge router, hands down.
Turn it on, run it for hours on the router table and shut it down at the end of the day. This is a serious production-quality machine. Go ahead, just TRY to bog it down, nothing phases this brute. Depth djustments are simple and repeatable. The Fein is quiet and powerful, it doesn't scream at deafening pitch like most of the other 3+HP routers out there (a HUGE plus if you have to listen to it all day). Available accessories are pricey, I would have liked to see them included with the standard kit so I have to give this router 4 stars, otherwise it's a dream to use and holds up to the test of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best router so far...
I've owned several routers over the years. The Fein is probably at the top of the heap of 3-1/4 HP routers. It is quiet, well-balanced, and fairly light. I love it's on-off switch--by far the best, and considerably easier to turn on and off than that of DeWalt. So far, I've had no breakdowns (my DeWalt had a cord failure and an on-off switch screw-up). Don't get too carried away by "whisper-quiet"--once the bit hits the wood, all routers are about the same! It's not really 6 speeds; it has a continual speed adjustment, labelled 1-6. Height adjustment is easy and accurate. This router just has a great "feel" to it in terms of low vibration and balance that makes me think it's going to be humming along for a long, long time. My only regret is that I got this router last rather than first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fein RT-1800 Router
The stator winding on my Hitachi M12V had opened (burned) after 12 years of service. I thought of buying another M12V having made my own fine adjustment knob and locking device years ago. But, after researching different brands I had decided to buy the Fein and I am very pleased with it. It is a very quiet, smooth, and precise machine. Changing router bits is so easy and quick. When I make an adjustment and lock it down, it stays there! I only item I did not like was the lock-on switch located in the handle. I use the Fein in a router table and very seldom do I use it hand held. So what I did was mount an On/Off switch/receptacle on my router table. I use the table mounted on/off switch to turn the router on & off. When I get ready to remove the router for any reason like bit changing I always unplug the router from the receptacle: Remember "SAFETY FIRST". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Door Hinge Template
Good product. Saved me alot of time. I installed about 15 doors and the template held up well. However, the bit is quite dull now. I recommend using clamps vs the nails to avoid fixing the holes. If you have alot of doors to hange like I did, you can make an 'L' shaped insert for the jig to route the strike plate recess. One fault of the product is the directions aren't very clear, especially for the 1/4 radius hinges. To cut these, you flip the jig around and use square portion of the jig. This square corner creates a 1/4 radius because the router bit is 1/4 inch. Make sure you practice a few times so not to ruin a good door.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets the job done
Give this template a four. Not meant for everyday use it's a little 'wobbly' when using a router bigger than 1 1/2 hp but gets the job done. For someone looking to put a few new doors up it's worth the price to get super clean mortises. Not well explained in the instructions is how to acheive a 1/4"' radial corner. The material shows how to do the 5/8" and a square. Maybe those smarter than me would instantly realize that a router bit like the one included could never cut a square but it took me a few minutes of scratching my head until I realized the square set up is the 1/4" set up too. You just chisel out the corners for the square.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hinges quick and easy
I'm a commercial carpenter and I have found this template quick and easy to use. It makes routing hinge mortises simple. A big time saver. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST
I have several routers (Proter Cable, Hatachi, Bosch, DeWalt and Ryobi) ranging in Hp from 1 1/2 - 3 1/4. Each of these routers have outstanding features, but the one I would rate over all is the Milwaukee D and the Body comfort models.

When it comes to control these two routers give the feeling of complete control over what you are doing. The startup is smooth and the power is above average.

I would recommend both of these routers highly.

Well done Milwaukee...

5-0 out of 5 stars great toy
best router I have ever used! Porter cable, look out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well thought out design
I had been looking for a "D" handle router and was in the process of deciding on the Bosch or the Makita when I came across Milwaukee's router. Both of the previous two have good reputations, and I'm sure I would have been happy with either, but what caught my eye was the features on the Milwaukee... and it didn't hurt that it was several dollars cheaper. My primary reason for wanting the "D" handle is that I prefer having that motor switch right at my fingertips.

One feature I like, is that the base is tightened down to the motor, or loosened, with a metal lever that snaps open and closed. This is easier than twisting a knob, and once closed, you have a positive lock. (yes, I have failed to tighten a knob securely enough on another router and had the base come loose while operating it). Removal of the base is done by pressing a button and sliding the motor out of the base. "Coarse" adjustments are made the same way. A knob is provided on the top side for making fine adjustments. Though the adhustment is not a fine as on my plunge router, I find it to work very well. The collets require 2 wrenches to install bits, and the wrenches provided are the forged type rather than stamped metal, a definite plus.

All in all this router is a pleasure to use, and my past experience with Milwaukee service has been very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars ergonomic masterpiece
I received my new Milwaukee D-handle router the other day and am very impressed so far. I have quite a stable of Milwaukee tools that have given both faithful and flawless service over the years and expect this one to be no different. As a proffesional residential building contractor I will not only use this router in the shop for end tables, dressers, entertainment centers, and whatever else my wife threatens to buy if I don't build; but also on the job site. I used this router the other day to cut out window openings in plywood wall sheathing 26 feet up in the air hanging from a ladder, and thats where the D-handle with on-off control at the tip of your finger is so nice. I did'nt have to take my hand off the ladder to turn the thing off. Its' also relatively light and very powerful. The 1-3/4 hp at 24,000 rpm is more than I will ever need. If I have one gripe it's the fact that there currently is no impact resistant carrying case available with it like Milwaukees' body grip router with the same motor. I guess I will have to pony up ...$ to buy a contractor bag that their cordless combo kit comes with. All in all though I think Milwaukee has another winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first Production hand router
The selection of a router has always been a difficult thing for me to do. Yet when I discovered The Milwakee 1-3/4 h.p. router it was pointed out to me that it was well thought out and had some unique features that others didn't have. The offerings by other brands had all the bells and whisles that make them unique and while all in a vast field of routers have there own merits the Milwaukee stands out from the rest in the field as to its power rating and size.
Why? you might ask did I chose to buy this router over such a crowded field? The design at first looks like some of the more well respected competion. But when close examination you find the little things that count the most. Simplicity of use should be a real consideration and yet this is a soficated design as well. I needed a good router that will work all day. I use this device to make lots of Hive bodies for my infant beekeeping operation. I have to, the bills are piling up on supply house wood ware equipment that use nothing more than finger joints for the standard of the industry. Surfice it to say the Router under review is a good place to start.
The device has some really redeeming qualitys that make unique in what Milwaukee Tools supplies. The wrenches are the first thing that comes to mind. Some others don't even offer or have eliminated tools that should come with machines that use them. Milwaukee didn't disappoint me and sent the right tool to take the bits on and off. Those 2 wrenches are a good sign that someone was watching "Router Work Shop" and the design also refelects on that as well.
If this tool is to be used in a multi-versital roll, like all routers should be, then this router has no real equal as of yet.(Notice nothing stays the same any more.)Since the router has now been defined as a unique tool that someone who works in wood has to have in order to conduct such things as rabbiting, and jointing this tool is at home above the work surface and well as bellow the surface. Why bother buying addtional gismo's when you have them built into the power tool in question. The Router table plays a big part in what I have to do. This means that adjustments to the depth of the tool bit and working surface has to be made simple not complexted.(Thank you "Router Work shop" for the simple method that you employed to do just that.) All router must be inverted and the controls of the depth must be adjusted in order to preform such taskes. This tool has devised a way into there design to do this without removing the router from the surface. It isn't much at first glance but both the normal router in this area and the "D" handled model do have an adjustment bolt that is 3/8" and a simple socket wrentch is all that is needed to make those adjustments at the surface.
This above feature and the "Router Work shop" should make itself self evedent that the design is a big improvement and a real time saver when someone has to make an adjustment without changing tool bits. The router in qestion has a very slight "kick" when starting but then even the "soft start" features on other routers sill have a "kick" when doing so. The whole device is well fishised in a nice Powder Coating and information on the housing tells the operator just what direction the rotation is. The concern to the operator is also definded in both models with contols of the hand and the vibration that occurs in all power tools. Ergonomics as a field should always help the user of power tools to achive control of the device at all times. This Router has, in my mind, all the applied features and considerations to the operator who has to use this tool everyday at prolonged intevals that it will not do lose control of this device. The Milwaukee Tool company should be comended on the consideration of the worker who uses there product.
While I have not used this device under real curcumstances it has no "Gyro-Effects" in what ever position that I place it with my control of the tool in operation. This makes me belive that it has been "balanced" to such a degree that the operator can control the device in any position that he wants to. Ther is no element of surprise with this power tool. Milwaukee Tool makes fine power tools for the heavy-duty crowd who make their living operating their tools under difficult positioning situations in order to achive construction of buildings and other edifices. (Plumbing and Electrical trades.) Their experance in those fields to design were not overlooked in this tool. Long hours of use is expected in those devices and I belive that the consideration in design were such that they didn't overlook those considerations in this tool as well.
So all in all I have chosen a safe and reliable tool that will out last me in the service or wood working and construction of my Hive bodies and other wood ware that I have to make on my own. While it is a minor problem the locking down of the power tool in the "D" handle is just a little to small for my fingers that just might be a "Plus" when consideration for such a feature is employed. (You can get by it with a firm application to it by the use of your thumb or a pen or pencil if handy.)
Since all that is specified is I feel that this tool is a good investment and shouldn't be overlooked in the overall consideration of a simple router with more features than normal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product, responsive customer service
I have been facinated by the Incra Jig demos at woodworking shows for years. I was lucky enough to recieve a 24" ultra, the master template library, and the three videos as a birthday present.
The set-up was fairly simple if you take your time. I had one snag during set-up, I was missing one small bolt, I scrounged around and found the correct size at a local hardware store. I was up and running, cutting near perfect box joints and dovetails in just a few hours. I also was missing a template that was refered to in one of the videos. A quick e-mail to the incra (taylor design) customer support department had both the bolt and the template in the mail and delivered within a week, no questions asked.
Overall, this is an excellent product that does everything it promises, as long as you follow the instructions. The company was very responsve to correcting their errors and will get my business again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool with Bad Manuals
First of all this as an exceptional tool. I am a joinery novice but am now creating professional dovetail joints without problems. I have two comments that I think would be important to new users.

1. The setup directions are very confusing. Incra includes directions for every jig variation and accessory variation all within the product manual. I actually had 4 (yes four!) different documents that I was being refered between and still couldn't find the exact document for my fence - until a change page fell out of one of the docs. I think that officially makes 5 separate docs. I guess Incra changes their products often and doesn't recreate assembly manuals.

2. Setup is everything. If you get the router bit depth and find the board center accurately, you're home free. I've started using a dial indicator and caliper. It may seem like an overkill but the extra time upfront allows me to create near perfect joints all day long.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice dovetail jig for small projects.
Without going over all of the other comments I would have to say this this is a nice tool. It does what it says it will. You can put together very nice looking basic dovetails as well as doing some fancy ones. The problem with this thing is that it gets mind numbing messing with that micrometer everytime you move the jig to make a cut. If you do not do it right each time error will start to show in your joints. That said, for a small box with only a few dovetail joints it is not a big deal, but if you are going to do LOTS of big things with many dovetail cuts you might find this gets old very quick. The big plus of this jig is its versatility. It comes with many sizes and patterns of dovetails that you can do in short order. Others have made note of the sharp edges on this jig and I would have to go along with them. It is not a big deal, but a point well taken and something that the Incra people should have taken care of. For the most part I think this is a very nice jig for the person that does small projects in small numbers. If you are going to make large number of big items I would go for the Leigh jig for not too much more money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incra Ultra24SYS
I've been working with wood 36 years now and can say that using the Incra Ultra24SYS is a pleasure. I have owned two other dovetail jigs, and this jig is by far superior either one of them. As with all dovetail jigs, set up is critical and can be somewhat time consuming. Once this jig is set up, repeatability is superb. I have read other reviews and agree with them for the most part. As for children being injured by the sharp edges on the ends of the aluminum extrusions, children should not be around this type of equipment. I do agree that plastic caps would look better and could solve this problem. This machine is a dream machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much needed, low cost improvements
I thought perhaps the viewpoint of a "Buyer/Researcher" might be helpful to others trying to make a decision on a fairly expensive investment. I am the type of tool purchaser who spends a great deal of time researching all major purchases. As I am going to buy a new tablesaw in the immediate future, I have investigated all the major fence, router table, dovetail machines, and other like systems by reading all the reviews, both magazine and internet, manufacturers catalogs and examining actual equipment at shows. Impressed as I am with the design, repeatibility, and quality of all the Incra products, something kept bothering me until I realized that the square cut edges on the ends of all the aluminum extrusions are a product liability lawyers dream and they detract from the beautiful gold finish! Trouble could occur the first time a child runs into an overhanging end,or some litigation minded adult cuts themself -it may happen.(By the way, I'm NOT a lawyer!) It would only take a simple plastic cap to snap on the ends such as other manufacturers use on their saws and accessories which have the same type extrusions. This would not cost Incra much and the greatly improved safety, appearance and contribution to overall quality would pay for itself many times over. At this point I should say I have decided to buy an Incra miter gauge, router table system, and tablesaw fence system in spite of this. I sincerely hope Incra takes this suggestion in the spirit in which it was written and implements this improvement to an already excellent product line. When they do I'll be the first in line to buy the end cap upgrade! The main reason I didn't give them a fifth star are those raw edges and I don't need to be an owner to find them objectionable. An additional possibly needed improvement are the clamping bolt ends on the TSIII Precision Table Saw Fence and maybe some of their other products. On the one I looked at, the metal to aluminum pressure gouged through the gold surface into bare aluminum. This left circular grooves on the inner track with tiny bits of metal. Perhaps the machine I looked at may not have been set up correctly. If it was, then the metal clamp's threaded ends need to have a non marring plastic end cap applied. This would keep raw aluminum from appearing anew in a different location with every fence adjustment. Again I may not be justified in this observation and even if I am, I still think the Incra systems are the best I have seen for quality, precision, ease of setup, adjustment, and repeatilibity that approaches machine tool standards ( Which the nature of the wood itself prevents much of the time ).There are several other excellent systems available from other companies but if the aforementioned assets are as important to you as they are to me, they will outweigh the very few faults I found. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I love this set!
I read the other review and had to say that my set has preformed flawless. Ran 200 Board feet of oak trim. No problem never burned once. Box was damaged in shipping and the company sent out a new one in 2days!

3-0 out of 5 stars Durability in question
Immediately after getting this set, I tried using the 1/4" straight bit on a piece of particle board. While cutting a 3/8" deep groove, the bit quickly broke. What was the reason?
(1)Is particle board too tough for this bit?
(2)Are 1/4" shanks in general, too light-duty for this application?
(3 Are these router bits made of Pot-metal?

Maybe I got what I paid for:( ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 13 year old classic
This router, the lowliest plunge of its time, cheap, 95 bucks at fedco... r.i.p. came with case and wrenches, case long gone, two power cords went by the wayside a makita flaw common in all there corded tools they disintegrate. You may only learn how much you like something by trying something else. I tried a friends recently more power, and bigger handles both problems for what this little router is relegated to, hanging doors. I leave it set up with freud templates and 1/2 bit for routing hinges and strikes in doors. The knob handles set this router apart from the rest up and down a door jamb total control. compact, fits in my finish box, it is perfect. I am glad they still make them. I wish mine had an electric brake, but I will probably leave earth owning this one. I enjoy using this tool.

3-0 out of 5 stars Convenient Little Router, but . . .
I have owned this router for about two years, and its small size makes it very convenient for small jobs, but it does have some shortcomings.

1) The plunge depth gauge is primitive, and its scale is very difficult to read.

2) There is no way to lock the trigger in the "on" position, so you have to hold the trigger down during the entire operation.

3) The insert plate is not included with this router. To do dovetailing or any other type of template work you will need this, and it is rediculously expensive ...considering that it is just a steel ring.

4-0 out of 5 stars I miss this router!
I owned this router for at least 10 years before selling it. It's greatest advantages are small size and light weight. You can work with it for a long time without fatigue, and it can get into small places where other routers won't go. It is also well-balanced and not terribly noisy. After several year's use, the mechanism that locked the plunge depth broke off (it's a flexible piece of plastic that is part of the casing), and while still functional, was somewhat inconvenient. Also the power cord disintegrated but was easy enough to replace. Using 2 wrenches to change collets is inconvenient, but you can avoid bruising your knuckles by positioning the wrenches so that you are tightening or loosening using a squeezing action. This is a 1/4" router, and care should be taken using large router bits mounted on these skinny shanks. The thing turns at 27,000 rpm which generates tremendous g-forces, and it is not a variable speed. As a result, large router bits can bend--I had it happen on 2 occasions to me, and on the second one the bit came loose and flew across my shop with enough force to do some serious damage. It is simply not an appropriate tool for that kind of bit.

I have two monster routers now--a Dewalt and a Fein. But I miss this little baby. It is truly one of the lightest routers on the market, and to think that I used it for 10 years with a couple of minor repairs...wish I hadn't sold it. I miss my little Makita!

4-0 out of 5 stars OK for a Low-End Router
The manufacturer tells you (or at least implies) that there is no speed control, and it won't handle 1/2" bits. That's OK for a low-cost router, but there are a couple of other weaknesses. First, it takes two wrenches to loosen/tighten the collet -- there isn't a lot of room in the housing to fit those two large wrenches... Also, there are three adjustable plunge stops -- this is implemented by three machine screws with jam nuts. A third (small) wrench is included for this. The thread on the machine screws is a little coarse, and between the coarse thread and trying to control the screw/jam nuts, it can take several attempts to get the plunge stops exactly where you want them. All-in-all, this is a tough little router without a lot of frills for small and medium-sized jobs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good joints, fiddly setup
Honestly I'd give this 5 stars because of the nice joints it makes, but it loses one for absence of documentation. Normally I would not expect documentation with a router bit but this one is pretty tricky to use and should come with instructions.

First, nowhere in the packaging or on Amazon's site does it tell you that the drawer front MUST be 3/4" and the side can be either 3/4" or 1/2".

Second, it comes with no instructions and the setup is not straightforward. I found good instructions on the web site of a different manufacturer of drawer lock bits.

Third, nowhere is it mentioned that one has to use a sacrificial zero clearance fence when making a drawer lock joint in cabinet grade plywood. I used a spare piece of poplar. My tip: get the height set using one sacrificial fence, then cut a new one for the cleanest joints, because it is crucial to have zero clearance between the top of the bit and the fence. Even 1/16" will result in significant tear-out.

Last, because the setup is so fiddly, I do not recommend you use this bit for just a couple joints. If you are going to do a run of drawers its worth the effort, but not for one or two. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dust extraction that works
I've purchased this and put it on my router and did some plunge routing. 70 % of the chips were captured and the clean-up was considerably less. I also noticed that my dust mask seemed to plug up less. It apparently get the fine dust too. For the cost it's worth the effort. The black hose adapter converts the hose from metric to english. I would recommend that you convert to a larger hose fairly quickly because the small hose cause a significant loss in vacumm the longer it is. ... Read more
