10 YR ????smoke alarm
I bought 3 of these alarms in 1999. After 4 months all 3 of the alarms gave the low battery warning. So much for the 10yr battery, which actually wasnt replaced until now (july 2001)

Didn't make it 10 years
I got two of these because it seemed like a good thing. Changing the batteries every year got to be a hassle. Both of them started chirping about 2 years after I got them. I tried another model and it's lasted much longer. It was less expensive too!

Ten years of safety
I bought this smoke alarm to take care of my loved ones. Smoke alarms do a wonderful job, when they've got batteries in them. Changing batteries is no picnic either. You've got to go buy batteries, haul out the step ladder, go up the ladder, yank the smoke alarm off the ceiling, monkey with the cover, change the battery, go back up the ladder, and FINALLY put the smoke alarm back on the ceiling. This smoke alarm does not need battery changes, the batteries last as long as the smoke alarm does. You NEVER need to buy batteries at all, saving your time and your money. I love this unit.
I have one in each room in my house. Mounting this unit to the bracket is a bit of a pain; but even so it takes only 30 seconds to align it properly.

Difficult to install
Have had 4 units for a year. With the time change weekend here, I started to change the battery in the utility room detector. Got the unit down OK. Changed the battery with a new alkaline one, observed the proper polarity. Any time I got close to twisting it onto it's mounting bracket, the alarm would go off until I took the battery out again. Ended up hauling out a stepladder so I could get close enough to the unit to see what I was doing. Even with the unit properly attached to the bracket, the unit was still falsely triggering. Did not even attempt to replace the batteries in the other 3 units before checking with the manufacturer. Compared with the Black & Decker and GE units that are hinged for battery replacement, I find these First Alert units very difficult to use. ... Read more

First alert
First alert makes the loudest sounds when it goes off. I recmend it.

Lindon has too much time on her hands.
Someone who writes a full-paragraph review of a smoke detector obviously has a lot of time on her hands. It's good to see that that she has put that free time to productive use. I've bought a lot of smoke detectors in my time, but I've never taken 10-20 minutes to write an online review of a smoke detector. Kudos to Lindon for taking that extra step to promote fire prevention.

This is good unit and specially that the battery is long life....

Alas, no power
Though this fine smoke alarm comes with a lithium power cell, the one I got was drained. Caveat emptor.

Long life, nice design
Smoke alarms aren't particularly attractive, but this one has a nice, sleek design that is less obtrusive than most. The high price is from the lithium battery which gives it 10 years of power, definitely worth it in my opinion to avoid changing the battery every couple of years. It has a nice feature that allows you to shut off the alarm for 15 minutes if it goes off because of cooking smoke or other false alarms. ... Read more
